Most content is available on IPv6. I think Amazon is the extent of the big guys
that aren't IPv6.

It is a lot more efficient too, from a routes advertised perspective. You
likely ever only need 1 IPv6 block. How many IPv4 blocks do you have?

Not sure if this gives credence to my frustration with the whole IPv6

I’m thinking the former.

I've been running a script for the last few months which grabs the current size
of the ipv4 and ipv6 FIBs for a full routing table, once a day, and writes it
to an RRA.
here's the results:

http://imgur.com/a/iJfPT

That chart with the green is actually drawing both v4 and v6 on the same chart.
That almost impossible to see blue line at the bottom of the chart? That's the
v6. For comparison, a standalone v6 chart is the second image.

[AFMUG] R200/R201 vs 844E

2016-05-25 Thread Christopher Gray
I'm trying to get a sense of whether the benefits of the 844E are worth the
additional cost relative to the R200/R201. Does anyone have any good
experience with the Calix and Cambium hardware and monitoring?

I've been using the Cambium system. The routers are mostly stable and their
monitoring is improving regularly. Other than the more advanced 5 GHz
capabilities, and the site survey option in the monitoring software, are
there any compelling reasons to take on the additional cost and to move
from Cambium to Calix in a WISP environment?

Thank you - Chris

Sort of.

We sold a total of around 80 (over a few years). There were some
manufacturability issues which needed to be dealt with (why there's 80 instead
of 100 - not a good yield). Fixing those with the current design isn't
really practical. Reordering and making just a few more of the existing
design is also prohibitive due to some minimum orders for parts I'm no longer
using other than on that board. Or summarized: We really can't cost
effectively make any more of the existing design, especially at the volumes
we're moving (1-2/month if we're lucky).

The good news is that the next iteration of the sitemonitor base units will
actually be able to do everything that standby power controller did, and a
whole lot more. The intent is to circle around and build a new standby power
controller board which runs the new sitemonitor firmware. This was supposed to
be done by now, but the processor switch for the new base units was anything
but the smooth transition we had hoped.

Yeah...easy to do with Sql Express, but make sure you get SQL Server
Management Studio as well. Once installed, open management studio and
import your DB. Select the DB and then click the "New Query" "button" at
the top. Make sure the little pull down shows your database as the default
"master" is sometimes in there if you haven't run a query yet. Now type
your query and hit the "Execute" button.

Home version supports multiple discrete users.
You invite family members (different Microsoft/Live ID) through the web

[AFMUG] DIN rail mount 30 vdc PSU?

2016-05-25 Thread Sam Lambie
Hey all,

I am looking for a Power supply (AC-DC) to Power Cambiums 100-450 gear.
It's easy to find 24vdc but the 30vdc is elusive?
I have been using the Meanwell SDR-24vdc and cranking them up to 28 vdc but
I would rather do it right. Anyone have sources for such Power Supplies?

thanks

Nearly all 24VDC power supplies will crank up to 29-30V. This is very
common.

[AFMUG] Blistering world record WIFI transmission heralds new era in super-fast internet

2016-05-25 Thread Steve

https://www.rt.com/viral/344357-wifi-record-transmission-fraunhofer/

German scientists have smashed the radio wave data-speed barrier by
transmitting information equivalent to the contents of a conventional DVD some
37km in under 10 seconds.

Re: [AFMUG] DIN rail mount 30 vdc PSU?

2016-05-25 Thread Chuck McCown
24 VDC is a standard system battery voltage.

Lead acid cells take a constant float voltage of 2.25 – 2.33 volts per cell to
remain fully charged and ready to go when they are called upon.

So 2.33 x 12 = 28 volts.

That is why you see system voltages of 28 volts all the time.
I actually prefer 27 volts, but the spec sheet of the battery manufacturer is
what really rules the issue.
Hotter days need different voltages than cooler days, so a temperature
compensated rectifier/charger/power supply will help to maintain battery life.

Cranking a Meanwell up to 28 volts is just fine.

30 volts is more of a max voltage for the system.

You may have a hard time finding such a beast.
To get 30 you may have to crank down a 48 volt power supply or get a custom
regulator.

Yeah...easy to do with Sql Express, but make sure you get SQL Server Management
Studio as well. Once installed, open management studio and import your DB.
Select the DB and then click the "New Query" "button" at the top. Make sure the
little pull down shows your database as the default "master" is sometimes in
there if you haven't run a query yet. Now type your query and hit the "Execute"
button.

Re: [AFMUG] DIN rail mount 30 vdc PSU?

2016-05-25 Thread George Skorup
Yep. I have no problem running PMP100/450 and ePMP on AD-155B's set to
float at 27.6V at small and medium-ish sites.

If you're just looking for AC-DC, then the SDR-120-24 is fine with the
adjustment pot cranked up to 29.5. In my environment though, since I try
to keep everything on the same rail and use as few DC-DC converters as
possible, say a MikroTik switch/router that takes a max of 28VDC, 29.5
is a bad idea. And probably not a good idea for an UBNT radio either,
like a RocketM5 on a shorter run.

If it is an AC site, that doesn't get a lot of power outages, running
everything at the float voltage works pretty well. Just understand that
there will be no bulk or absorption charge after an outage.

If you're just looking for AC-DC, then the SDR-120-24 is fine with
the adjustment pot cranked up to 29.5. In my environment though,
since I try to keep everything on the same rail and use as few
DC-DC converters as possible, say a MikroTik switch/router that

idea for an UBNT radio either, like a RocketM5 on a shorter run.

Re: [AFMUG] Fwd: Mechanical Connectors?

2016-05-25 Thread Carl Peterson
Don't have any long-term data on this as we haven't deployed them in the
field yet, but we are going to use SWIFT style splice on connectors and the
Ilsintech F1 all in one splicer to splice them on. I think Brand name
Swift connectors run about $5 each but connectors for 3mm cable are about a
buck a piece from China. They are not pre-stripped and cleaved so you need
an auto stripper and a cleaver that works for them. You can use the
multi-pack-f to strip/cleave and then another splicer to splice as long as
the connector splice holder works with your splicer. We are looking at

On another note, why are splice holders so expensive? Even the plastic
ones are ridiculously priced. I just paid $300 for a pair of HF-2.5 splice
holders... crazy.

I actually have SQL running on the real live DB and my query is working.
Thanks for the suggestions.
I did a cut and paste into excel from the query. Not sure if it will create a
report. Have not seen that option yet.
But excel gives me the tools I need.

2016-05-25 Thread Cameron Crum
It has a built in report generator, but you are probably right that it will
be faster to work in excel if you are not familiar with it. If you run your
query, the result table will be a lot like excel. Click the top left corner
to select all then right click to copy or copy with headers. Then it is an
easy paste into excel.

[AFMUG] Fairgrounds WiFi

2016-05-25 Thread SmarterBroadband
We are looking to upgrade some equipment we use to provide WiFi to a
fairgrounds site.

Has anyone compared Cambium cnMaestro vs UBNT UniFi? Good / Bad?

Looks like the Cambium E500 is not available yet. Therefore thinking ePMP
1000 Hotspot. Can deployed Hotspot APs be grouped in cnMaestro so we can
change wifi wpa passwords across multiple APs at once?

Is UniFi a good solution today?

Is Mikrotik with CAPsMan worth a look.

Any thoughts ideas appreciated.

Adam

[AFMUG] OT I screwed myself

2016-05-25 Thread Chuck McCown
My oldest son is a computer security specialist / forensic guy.

He was telling my my super complicated password was not so secure.
He cracked it pretty easy. He suggested I add an alt code.

So I did. Now, neither one of us can open the file.
Guess alt codes in passwords for some Office products cause big problems.

Arrgh.

Re: [AFMUG] OT I un-screwed myself

2016-05-25 Thread Chuck McCown

I unscrewed myself.

In windows file explorer, there is a view option that has a preview option.
With preview selected you get the contents of a file on the right side of
the screen.

I was trying various combinations of my password and noticed that on one of
the tries, the preview pane showed some content.
After a few more tries I discovered that putting a zero in front of the alt
code allowed the preview to show content.
The file still would not open, but I could cut and paste from the preview
pane and I got it all.

Sometimes you luck out.

Try making it longer rather than strange. Make your password long not cryptic.
For good measure to pass stupid password tests put in a capital and number but
that doesn’t make it harder to crack. They are still going try every

That is a good point.

I have been using keepass, but since you mentioned spreadsheet, I think you

Keepass is a local storage based solution. There's a multitude of keepass
clients that exist for windows, linux and OSX, it's an open source standard
key file format.

You can run keepass on a computer with no network connectivity at all.

Where you keep your keepass file is up to you - the default would be local
storage on your laptop or desktop, or you can have things like NFS mounts,
SMB/CIFS, or if you're (in my opinion) reckless you can keep your keepass
key file in a folder that is backed up by dropbox, microsoft onedrive,
backblaze, etc.

Also I believe MS Office Excel files you can strip the password requirement
off the file as if it didn't exist (ie how Chuck could see the preview).

I couldn’t see the preview unless I had the password.
For some reason the alt code makes it impossible to open the file in excel but
preview showed the content.
But I still had the password.

I am not sure excel can be cracked by means other than brute force.
