We tend to think since Pokemon is “Old” it’s kind of wained. It’s still huge
and the Pokemon Go will boost it even more. The 2015 Pokemon world
championships had about a half million dollars in prize money and was invite
only. Not like Amerrican Idol or something. You actually had to be invited by
winning points at various other tournaments.

[AFMUG] vacations

2016-07-11 Thread Ken Hohhof
Did I miss a memo about this being the designated week for customers to go
on vacation? Subscribers have been popping up red like crazy the past 2
days on our network monitor. Not like the fades we get this time of year
due to field corn, these go down and stay down.

One of them just called though and said he set his hour on fire so the
firefighters had the electricity turned off. Yeah, I guess he's going to
visit the relatives now.

Amazing how customers expect us to notify them any time we have any kind of
planned outage, but they don't feel the need to tell us when they turn off
their equipment for a week.

Having been through a house fire where everything you own is lost, I would
have sent someone out immediately
to help them restore service.

A few days after the fire, my regular UPS driver stopped by and asked if
there was anything he could do. He said
he saw the smoke and immediately knew which house it was. He offered to
take up a collection at work for clothes
or any other needs. The generosity of strangers has always amazed me.

Why would you monitor every single customer's up/down status? Why not
just monitor their traffic levels and then if they go down, they will
call you and you can review their data then? You could even monitor the
up/down status, just not have an alert?

Well, when a bunch of customers start going offline, it usually means
something bad happened. Until you realize there is nothing common between
the down customers.

Also, customers seem to expect you know when they are down and you should
fix it without them calling in. Customers expect a lot. I pay my f'ing
money and I expect you to come out here and plug the cord back into the
power strip under my desk when I kick it out with my feet.

I think Comcast techs are like cops, you hear on the news any time one of
them does something bad, but they take a lot of crap from the general public
on a daily basis.

If it is fiber, yes.
You can get an email within 5 minutes after unplugging your connection
Sometimes you'll get an automated phone call too.
Of course, I haven't used ATT in years now

[AFMUG] Anyone purchased an Eltek rectifier system recently?

2016-07-11 Thread Eric Kuhnke
Looking for a ballpark price estimate off list on this:

http://www.eltek.com/detail_products.epl?id=1142848&cat=24677&k1=&k2=&k3=&k4=&close=1

It has a distribution bus/fuse/breaker panel in the top 1U, the bottom 1U
populated with 4 x 2000W rectifiers.

Or something else equivalent that is 2U to max 3U in size, 8kW rated at
230/240VAC input.

[AFMUG] -48 PDU

2016-07-11 Thread Adam Moffett
Is there a relatively cheap device that can take 48v in and switch a
handful of -48vdc loads on and off?

I'm thinking like $100-200 kind of cheap. Small and DIN mount would be
best.

The packetflux PDU has a negative ground, so that's already out.

DIN Relay 3? Depends on your amperage?

beware, stupid autoplaying video.

2016-07-11 Thread George Skorup
I asked Forrest about doing a -48 version of the 5ch PDU. He said it
would need some tweaking since the PDU itself is powered by the main
input, kinda like a SyncInjector.

Depending on your current, you could use a regular 4-relay exp. module
to switch the hot wire for each device. Should be able to handle about
1A @ 48VDC. Next question is, would a -48 version of the PDU support say
1.5A per port? I know you can set the per port limit to 3000mA, but I'm
not sure if it'd be capable of that between 44 and 58VDC. I want to say
I remember him saying 1.5A should be OK.

I have some Trango licensed radios that I'd like to get on remote power
control, but so far there's nothing to handle them. Nothing that I like
anyway. And the problem there is the damn 75-80 watts of power they use.

[AFMUG] Larger Not-that-high-res monitors

2016-07-11 Thread Nate Burke
One of my desktop Hanns-G 28" 1920x1200 monitors just crapped out. I was
using it, and the display went all white, and I can't even bring up the
monitor controls. I went to look for a replacement and apparently these
are an odd bird. The 1920x1200 monitors I'm finding are 26" or less,
and start at $300. I think I only paid like $250 when I bought these
new back in 2011. Has something changed with Monitors that they're all
smaller and more expensive now?

It's a cost issue with the 1920x1080 monitors. Look for a used HP LP2465 on
eBay.

This ain't bad. Not as many horizontal lines, but a lot more vertical
lines (29" and 2560 x 1080). $329
