Re: [AFMUG] Web interfaces for BIND

2015-05-27 Thread WaveDirect
Just catching up on this.. but Nano can do pretty much all of that. Most of
them with a CTRL key combination. Example CTRL K to cut an entire line. CTRL U
to paste. CTRL W find a word. You can open a document to specific line . Find and replace CTRL \ type in what you want and then A to
replace all instances. 'ALT-6' to copy a line (copy as many lines as you like,
and they will be pasted in the order you copied them. 'CTRL-U' to paste the
lines. Syntax highlighting you can do it as well with a little setup. It is
weak though.

Its just as powerful for average editing. If you are a coder and like to do
elaborate things then VI is your choice. But why you'd code in VI is beyond
me. Those days are past...

Also using webmin is fine for managing DNS on smaller deployments if you lock
it down both in the firewall and ACL's. Anything more than a dozen zones and
then you might want to look for something better.

Just took a look at it..
It is nice, appears to be a more concise subset of what powerdns is capable
of...
Powerdns is more flexibleand allows one to build a setup such as what
NicTool is suggesting.

Either way it's all good.

I think nano is great if you don't use CLI much since you can figure it out
fast. To me vim is better if you use CLI all the time and edit a lot. Just the
number of syntax highlighters is worth the effort. Very quick to do a great
amount of editing as others mentioned.

But again, if all you do is get in and change one little thing, go nano.

For those of us that still use PINE or Alpine for email at times (yes, I still
do for certain accounts) then using Nano is almost second nature…..

I ran ISPConfig for a while for a specific system … it wasn’t bad … broke some
things trying to upgrade it though. Also, really disliked running MySQL on a
bunch of different servers just so it could generate config files locally
(centralized MySQL would make much more sense in my opinion).

I recently bumped into something called ISPConfig. It provides a web gui for
Bind and a number of other services. It's not half bad.

I dont know about anybody else, but i find load on the primary zone server
tends to be light, and the heavy usage is on the recursive lookup servers. So
for me, i look for something easy for primary zones. "Easy" might include easy
integration with a CRM.

I make the recursive servers bind. The config tends to be very simple on those
and you mostly never touch it anyway.

We run a PowerDNS master and have our public
authoritative BINDs pull everything as slaves from the
private PowerDNS master.
Our zones are kept in a MySQL database for PowerDNS.
PowerDNS has a couple of web editors, this one looks
simple and probably does the job:

I think I’ll probably install it and play around as I’m
sick of editing zones in the database by hand :)

Not sure if that helps, but it could be a solution if you

Either one is useful for editing functionality depending on what you are
used to using.
I started out on pico and x-term, I can easily move between nano and vi

Re: [AFMUG] Web Interfaces for BIND

2015-05-25 Thread Bill Prince
The first time I had to use vi I was sent to Tennessee for an
"emergency" programming project. Before I got on the airplane, I
snabbed (borrowed) a copy of the Nutshell book on vi. I then read the
book on the flight to Nashville. It was kind of a trial by fire, because
the platform I had to use to do the project only had a text interface,
and the only editor was vi.

I spent a couple of weeks on the project, and when it was done, I pretty
much knew (and had learned to appreciate) the idiosyncrasies of vi. In
retrospect, it wasn't such a big deal, and yes, my "muscle memory" makes
it the tool I tend to pull out.

I teach new people to Linux to use nano because it works like you’d think an

and you can’t break a system enough that it won’t still have vi left intact.
The first time was infuriating though. Use what works for you, everyone has
their toolbox of tricks, work out your own and use it.

number of syntax highlighters is worth the effort. Very quick to do a great
amount of editing as others mentioned.

But again, if all you do is get in and change one little thing, go nano.

GUIs are great if you don't use something a lot. But if you want/need to
do a lot in a short amount of time, the CLI usually is the better
choice. GUIs tend to get in the way of anything even slightly out of
"routine".

We run a PowerDNS master and have our public authoritative BINDs pull
everything as slaves from the private PowerDNS master.
Our zones are kept in a MySQL database for PowerDNS.

PowerDNS has a couple of web editors, this one looks simple and probably does

I think I’ll probably install it and play around as I’m sick of editing zones

I can use it. I simply choose to not unnecessarily complicate my life. For
instance, nano doesn't come with OpenBSD, you have to install it. However, I
had to use vi to get the system into a usable state before I could install

We run a PowerDNS master and have our public authoritative BINDs pull
everything as slaves from the private PowerDNS master.
Our zones are kept in a MySQL database for PowerDNS.

PowerDNS has a couple of web editors, this one looks simple and probably
does the job: http://www.powerdns-gui.org/
I think I’ll probably install it and play around as I’m sick of editing
zones in the database by hand :)

Not sure if that helps, but it could be a solution if you want to go that
route.

Re: [AFMUG] Web interfaces for BIND

2015-05-24 Thread Adam
I recently bumped into something called ISPConfig. It provides a web gui for
Bind and a number of other services. It's not half bad.

I dont know about anybody else, but i find load on the primary zone server
tends to be light, and the heavy usage is on the recursive lookup servers. So
for me, i look for something easy for primary zones. "Easy" might include easy
integration with a CRM.

I make the recursive servers bind. The config tends to be very simple on those
and you mostly never touch it anyway.

We run a PowerDNS master and have our public authoritative BINDs
pull everything as slaves from the private PowerDNS master.
Our zones are kept in a MySQL database for PowerDNS.
PowerDNS has a couple of web editors, this one looks simple and
probably does the job: http://www.powerdns-gui.org/
I think I’ll probably install it and play around as I’m sick of
editing zones in the database by hand :)

Not sure if that helps, but it could be a solution if you want to
go that route.

Re: [AFMUG] Web interfaces for BIND

2015-05-23 Thread Ken Hohhof
I think the main difficulty of editing BIND zone and config files from the CLI
is actually backup and error checking. If you religiously save the previous
version (in case you really screw up) and check named.log afterward, that’s the
big thing. Because just one tiny error will keep the zone from loading, or
cause it not to work as planned (like forgetting a trailing dot).

I suspect anyone with modest scripting skills could write some simple tools to
automate common tasks like adding domains, adding A records to forward zones,
adding PTR records to reverse zones, populating a reverse zone with placeholder
PTR records, etc. While making sure to update sequence numbers. These could
be web based or CLI commands with parameters.

Re: [AFMUG] Web interfaces for BIND

2015-05-23 Thread Mike Hammett
Some (very few) things are easier via CLI vs. web interface. BIND configs are
not one of these things.

Webmin is simple and works – would be quite useful if someone needed a web
interface for BIND. Personally much prefer CLI for that kind of stuff….

Re: [AFMUG] Web interfaces for BIND

2015-05-23 Thread Cassidy B. Larson
We run a PowerDNS master and have our public authoritative BINDs pull
everything as slaves from the private PowerDNS master.
Our zones are kept in a MySQL database for PowerDNS.
PowerDNS has a couple of web editors, this one looks simple and probably does
the job: http://www.powerdns-gui.org/
I think I’ll probably install it and play around as I’m sick of editing zones
in the database by hand :)

Not sure if that helps, but it could be a solution if you want to go that route.
