Re: sample photos. - smc pentax A 100mm F2.8 MACRO at middle distances w/K-1
The problem is related to lack of Multi-coating on the rear element which was absent on pre-digital lenses. More commonly this gives rise to ghosting (back-and-forth reflections) when these old lenses are used on digital camera because the sensors are much more reflective than film. The difference between the Sigma 170-500 APO & the later DG version is indicative. The image quality is a lot better than my cell phone, but the raw files seem a bit more delicate, or fragile than, especially, the K-1. Much, much less dynamic range for one. I also find the evf to be a mixed blessing, particularly for dynamic scenes. I do suspect that the newer bodies do much better in terms of both sensor and EVF. Last week I road my bike up Zayante road to the summit. That's a very nice set, Larry, but I must say I was wondering about the real subject! In the intervening time Tori has done a lot of work on the car, including body work (with a little help) and repainting (her first paint job). The car isn’t likely to win the Concourse at Pebble Beach, but it’s still an impressive achievement. Damned impressive in fact. I was heading to a party about 20 minutes from her on Saturday and hadn’t seen the car for several months so I stopped by to get some photos of it. She asked me to take it for a short drive, during which the cable for the column shifter came loose, so I manually moved it to have 3rd and 4th rather than 1st and 2nd, drove back, fixed it, and suggested that for the next round of photos she replace her gimme cap with some sort of scarf. She went one better and put on a bit of a pinup costume. The full sunlight was a bit of a challenge, but we did have some pretty clouds in the background. For those that just want one photo: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/52111568366/in/album-72177720299395937/ For those that want the full set: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72177720299395937 You may note that some of the photos are not of a ’59 Gazelle, but of a ’38 Minx. The person that sold the Gazelle to ths car lot she bought it from is a bit of a Rootes group fanatic. I had first heard of Doug when I was working with his brother Mike, about 20 years ago, and Mike mentioned that Doug had “Tigerized” a Hillman Husky. An idea that had crossed my mind on more than one occasion when I was driving a girlfriend’s husky back in college. Tori connected with Doug, a very handy resource because he had done a lot of mechanical restoration on Nigel (the Gazelle). It turned out that Doug had a ’38 Minx sitting around, but not the resources to fix it up, along with all of his other projects. That is going to be Tori’s next project. I have virtually had to give up on major weed control in my garden because it is just too time consuming. The major source of weed seeds here are the "park" areas which the Muni no longer maintains. Grass cutting has become bush clearing with a front end loader around critical areas such as sub-stations & culverts. Perhaps they should fence off the parks & hire them out for grazing? The Muni claims they have no money for maintenance because the salary bill is so high and they just can't get rid of idle labour because of the power of the unions. The primary task of the "workers" seems to be the collection of cheques at the end of the month. Alan C On 27-Apr-22 04:10 AM, Daniel J. My heritage is Eastern European, but not Russian or Ukrainian. I was not raised in the Orthocox faith, but attended many church services and cultural celebrations with my father's family when I was younger, including midnight masses on Orthodox Christmas and Orthodox Easter. They are still a part of my identity. Tragically, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and all Rus' has declared Putin's war on Ukraine a holy war, despite the religious affinity and the fact that there are 1200 Russian Orthodox parishes in Ukraine in addition to the many Ukrainian Orthodox churches and cathedrals. Mariupol', which has been leveled by Russian artillery, was inhabited mostly by ethnic Russians, the people Putin claims his invasion is to protect. For the occasion, I resurrected the below old image of my grandparents' church, the Holy Ghost Orthodox Church in Manville, NJ. Re: New Toys
John, I was a poor school teacher with a VW Beetle at the time. A fellow teacher offered me the battered, clapped out, oil burning Van for a mere £25. I had a mate who raced Morris Minors who helped me do a ring job & fit a hot cam & manifold with twin SU's he had lying around. For the colour scheme I was inspired by the 1275 Mini Coopers which had started appearing. It was quite quick off the mark but the top speed was only about 75 mph - 4.50 diff). The road holding was terrible. With a growing family I needed something more practical so I sold it & bought a S/H Morris Oxford S/W. John, a lot of sense in which you say. I have never been that fussy & luckily have never had a crisis. I have retained my K110D body just in case my K5 packs up some day but don't cart it around with me. In fact I still use it occasionally just for the hell of it. If I don't need to crop much, it does quite well. I also have a mint MZ-60 which I haven't used for some time because there is no local film lab & the logistics & expense of sending films to Cape Town is not on. (Film is still alive & well down there). My fav. film camera was an ME-Super which I gave away to a mate in Port Elizabeth still shooting film. That taught me that there are occasions when you don't have time to swap lenses on a camera - you barely have time to switch to the second camera setup. For another thing, there are once-in-a-lifetime opportunities where having a second body with you is worth it just for insurance. When I got a one-year job assignment in New Zealand one of the items on my shopping list for the stop-off in Singapore on the way from London to Auckland was an ME to sit alongside my MX (plus an M80-200 zoom and a few other goodies). Ever since then I've almost always had two camera bodies in the bag. Then there was the time when the MX Motor Drive bent the coupling in my MX. Fortunately that had become my second body - by that time my primary camera was a PZ-1p. And there was the time the PZ-1p stopped working on a rainy race day at Laguna Seca. It was fine when it dried out after a couple of hours, but by then the race was over. But the trusty old MX filled in just fine. Or the time when I slipped climbing down from a photo tower, and knocked (most of) my MZ-S off the back of my big zoom. Again, having the PZ-1p along as well meant I could continue shooting. And, of course, in the film days it was nice to have a second body so that you could have two different types of film to hand. I don't have anywhere near as many cameras as Godfrey, but I have still got a fair number of the cameras I've used over the years. I have owned: Brownie 127 Hanimex 35mm Olympus Pen half-frame. Then you could spend the next week analysing all the images so you can rank them in order of sharpness, colour rendition & whatever else you fancy. Then you would be able to truly decide which one (or maybe 2) cameras are worth keeping. The balance can be donated to a charity shop. For me, one camera is quite enough. My tongue is stuck to a cheek now! Although I've said to myself, "Heck, I hardly ever take these cameras out anymore, I should sell the lot!" I just haven't found any sensible reason to. The E-M1 in particular still works brilliantly for most of the things I photograph and its extreme configurability/customizability is amazing. My Leicas have all had the ability to save a user profile (actually a few of them) both internally and in an externally saveable format, and return the cameras to their defaults instantly as well as re-instantiate a customized profile just as instantly. You can also transfer those settings from one to another of the same body easily. I really wish Olympus had done the same thing right from the start. (Note: I think the E-M1 has a similar concept of user profiles at least, I should probably re-read the manual…) What I did to save time (since you *can* do a master reset of all parameters on the Olympus, at least on both of mine) was to create a checklist-cheatsheet for all 197 settings that marks out quickly and simply all of my changes from the default configuration. So when I do reset the E-M1 to its defaults, I just pull out the cheat sheet and walk through all the settings that I changed as a standard setup to reconfigure it to my basic configuration. Takes about ten minutes that way, and without having to do any head scratching and trying to remember how I had it set. I used the pages in the PDF form of the owner's manual that list out ALL the menu options and defaults to construct the cheat sheet: just copied them into a new PDF and edited that into the form I wanted. I was already finding that carrying a camera bag with my K5, the 60-250, and a selection of other items (generally one or other of the 16-50 or 50-135, and maybe the 50/1.4) was getting tiring by the end of the day, so I was looking for a way to lighten the load. I'd looked at the Olympus bodies, and was leaning towards either the M5 or possibly the M1, when Olympus decided to drop the price of the M1X by 40%, making it only a little more expensive than the M1 (and $300 less than Pentax were asking for the K3) for a body that was specifically tailored for what I was most interested in - Motorsports or wildlife photography. So I jumped, and picked up the M1X and the 40-150/2.8 zoom (which gave me pretty much the same field of view as the 60-250, which had become my most-used lens). I haven't done a great deal of photography in the five months that have elapsed since then, but it's all been with the M1X. I've just about become accustomed to the fact that almost all the controls work exactly the way the Pentax controls don't (I have to turn the dials in the opposite direction for many functions, the assignment of the two thumbwheels on the body to control shutter and aperture has the two functions interchanged, the lens release button is on the other side of the mount, etc., etc.) Fortunately, though, the M1X is amazingly reconfigurable - most of the vast number of buttons spread over the body can be re-assigned to different functions (and there's an easy way to swap the functions on those two thumbwheels), One thing I have found out, though, is that it's a little too easy to get yourself stuck in a corner. With the Pentax bodies all you have to do to reset the camera to a known state is to turn it off and on again. The M1X, though, remembers the state it was it when you turned it off, and goes back to that state when you turn it on again (although there's probably a way to change that behaviour, too). Last weekend I decided I was going to stick with the lighter system. I knew I wanted something wider than 40mm, but I wasn't sure whether to go for the 12-40/2.8 or the 12-100/4. I eventually decided to go for the 12-100, and add a 2x TC to use with the 40-150 to give me a two-lens system of 12-100/4 and 80-300/5.6 (roughly comparable to a range of 17-425 on my K5 - giving up 1mm at the wide end, but gaining a little more reach than the 350mm I g

It doesn’t matter how sharp the lens is if I can’t use it to take the photo I’m trying for. I bought it when I bought my K-1, because to me the main technical advantage of the K-1 was faster lenses at wider angle of view than I could get with an APS body. I.e. there wasn’t a 10-20 that was f/2.8 or faster in APS. Re: McMilky McWay redux
Very interesting. I see you removed the "peeing rock" from some of them! Alan C On 28-Feb-22 09:28 AM, Larry Colen wrote: A friend wants to buy a print of my night time panorama of McWay falls. She, however, did not want the moonset in it, so I started by building a panorama that had all the frames that didn’t have (much of) the moonset, and processed it using lightroom 11, rather than 6. We then discussed what crop she wants and this is the version we’re getting a test print made of: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/51902320923/in/album-72177720296910491/ It is amusing because when I started looking at the stitching errors on the horizon I realized that it wasn’t lightroom messing up the horizon, but rather waves. Or if it is stitching errors they’ve been blurred out enough to look like waves that it was better to leave them. PESOx2: A couple of critters from yesterday.
No manicured parks or cemeteries around here, only eyesores. Kruger is a great escape. A docile Ellie Bull, freshly bathed & dusted, at Sable Dam & a Klipspringer at Masorini. If you look carefully you can just make out its mate peeping out from behind the rock. https://www.flickr.com/photos/wisselstroom/51907379823/ K5 & HD 55-300.
