The way that sounds can be attached to effects in OpenOffice.org Impress under
Linux is fairly complicated not because of the way sounds can be selected but
because OOo does not use an existing working sound engine. There are mainly
the ALSA and the OSS sound systems with ALSA replacing OSS as far as it seems.
With actual distros you normally have a working sound system after install or
upgrade. Why can't OOo use this instead of the Java installation you need to
add.
There is a workaround using the start process function but this does not
accept parameters for the process so you need to setup a short shell script
for each sound. I guess the easiest way would be to add a config parameter set
where you can enter the pass to your preferred player and the start and stop
commands needed to start a sound and stop it if requested. The only other
parameter needed in the presentation would be the name of the sound file.

It IS the desired behaviour. You can only link a paragraph style with a
paragraph style and character styles with character styles.
When right-clicking on a style and selecting "Edit" there will also be an
"Organize" tab. There, you can link the style to another one and inherit its
properties and also use the relative values in a suitable manner.

something like "use the system locale if document does not provide a character

[tools-issues] [Issue 67911] dmake removes tempfiles of current target after each recipe

--- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tue Aug 22 21:05:18 -0700

The summary is not quite accurate. It removes the tempfiles if the end of the
recipes for the current target process is reached. For non-parallel (-P1)
execution of dmake this is always the case after each recipe line.

The folowing makefile demonstrates this:

--- makefile.mk ---
SHELL*:=/bin/sh
SHELLFLAGS*:=-ce

all :
+echo $(assign VERSIONTMP:=$(mktmp iii)) ; sleep 1
+echo Z$(VERSIONTMP)Z ; ls $(VERSIONTMP)
--- makefile.mk ---

For `dmake -r -P3` the tempfile is still there at the "ls $(VERSIONTMP)", for
`dmake -r` it is already deleted.

Propably still OK.

@eric: Yes, I'd also liked to see this as a master fix, but as this didn't
happen
we just have to wait.

@eric: This issue is fixed in cmcfixes27. That's what Pavel and I verified.

It's not committed to m182, so that will still fail. Please check cmcfixes27
or wait until it is integrated into the master.

I see that this issue is marked as FIXED, but I am using 2.0.3 on Windows and
this is still a problem. It has been a problem since at least 1.1.
Just trying to open a plain text document or copying from another application
using rich text will cause OO to go completely unresponsive or crash.
The thought has occurred to me that this may be a non-focused dialog problem.
In many of these cases, there SHOULD be a dialog come up asking me how to import
the specified file. I never see it. Instead, I get an unresponsive app. If I
am copying and pasting, I can choose PASTE SPECIAL, I can then select AS
UNFORMATTED and get the text okay. If I just PASTE, OO locks up.
Is the text import dialog perhaps being generated, but not being forced to the
foreground? Is OO waiting for me to respond to a modal dialog that I never see?
Just a thought.
I don't have the tools or know-how to investigate this.
Does this make sense to anyone else?
For some time, my workaround has been to import into MS Word or Excel, save as a
Word document, then load that into OpenOffice.
But come on -- that's just wrong! ;-)
I would appreciate any word of an actual fix for this problem.
Thanks.
ronk

[sc-issues] [Issue 5930] Engineering Notation

1) I've used this feature in ms excel 95 and probably even earlier versions.
OOo is really deficient in letting this one slip to such low priority. Please
raise the urgency!
2) The competing product suppresses leading digits when rounding to scientific
notation and this isn't always the nicest way to show things. What excel will
NOT let you do is ask for engineering notation with a specified number of
significant digits. For example, instead of seeing 1.2E3, 12.3E3, 123.4E3,
1.2E6 it is usually better to see 1.23E3, 12.3E3, 123.E3, 1.23E6 since this
maintains the same accuracy throughout, i.e. 3 significant digits in this
example - which is what we engineers really need.
3) The competing product does not allow suppression of the redundant trailing
E+0 or E00 or whatever. This would be really nice.
4) It would be great to have a 'general engineering' format, similar to the
excel's general format but which switches to engineering format for numbers
between -1.0 and +1.0, numbers -1E3 and under and numbers 1E3 and greater. Note
that excel's general format already shows small numbers (below about 1E-5) in
scientific format instead of just 0 as in OOo 2.02.

Stefan, Good point.
Although the use/test case for this issue was verified on a test box, as
mentioned by you in desc 16 this should be confirmed in the stage site first.

Let me know if you want to verify this on the stage box (which is still

The 3rd example makes it clear it is not because the text in the email is
Wrapped that it gets copied wrong.
In this email, every line ends with 0x0A
Thereby making every pasted line a single unwrappable block in OO.

I also note that copying from the compose window does not have this problem.
Just as copying from this comment text box.
So the source location does seem to be involved.

Looking up the documentation for the "Selection Buffer" in the X server manual:
icccm.txt

2. Peer-to-Peer Communication by Means of Selections

Selections are the primary mechanism that X Version 11 defines for the
exchange of information between clients, for example, by cutting and pasting
between windows. Note that there can be an arbitrary number of selections (each
named by an atom) and that they are global to the server. Section 2.6 discusses
the choice of an atom. Each selection is owned by a client and is attached to a
window.

Selections communicate between an owner and a requestor. The owner has the
data representing the value of its selection, and the requestor receives it. A
requestor wishing to obtain the value of a selection provides the following:

* The name of the selection
* The name of a property
* A window
* The atom representing the data type required
* Optionally, some parameters for the request

If the selection is currently owned, the owner receives an event and is
expected to do the following:

* Convert the contents of the selection to the requested data type
* Place this data in the named property on the named window
* Send the requestor an event to let it know the property is available

Clients are strongly encouraged to use this mechanism. In particular,
displaying text in a permanent window without providing the ability to select
and convert it into a string is definitely considered antisocial.

Note that all data transferred between an owner and a requestor must usually
go by means of the server in an X Version 11 environment. A client cannot assume
that another client can open the same files or even communicate directly. The
other client may be talking to the server by means of a completely different
networking mechanism (for example, one client might be DECnet and the other
TCP/IP). Thus, passing indirect references to data (such as, file names, host
names, and port numbers) is permitted only if both clients specifically agree.

Enough quoting, unless someone doesn't have access to the original.

Definitely not the same as Windows clipboard.

Stewart

@rainerbielefeld

The 3 button mouse is not a requirement, as an alternative you can have 3-button
emulation on, and chord the left and right buttons to do it.

However, if you are in Windows, there is no equivilant. So I suspect Linux is a
requirement.

Left-drag text to be copied, switch to workspace/screen with OO loaded, paste by
pressing middle button.

Also by pasting to a text editor, I can see no special characters. The spaces
really are 0x20. Therefore the problem must exist in OO.

Looking closely at content.xml in the odt results, I see 0xC2 0xA0 where the
problem is, and where it originally existed as 0x20.

Sorry for the slow upload.

I see the result in 'example-50431.odt', but I can't reproduce the result with
the contents of 'example-50431.eml'; not with + / +, not
with drag and drop.

@sandreas41:
Is middleclick precondition (I do not have a 3-button-mouse)?
Do you see the same problem using attached 'example-50431.eml'

I downloaded a development build of 2.0.4 under windows.

resultSet.getString() correctly returns hundredths of a second.
ERROR: resultSet.getTimeStamp() return an incorrect hundredths of a second.
ERROR: rowSet.getString() does NOT return hundredths of a second.
ERROR: rowSet.getTimeStamp() return an incorrect hundredths of a second.

So, the only way to get the correct value is to use a result set and use
getString().

Looks like we should run

Maho: can you please verify in classic build if it does not break? It would take

> You need a breakiterator patch for Italian language

I'm not sure of that ... tell me if I'm wrong or I'm right ...

If the apostrophe is the Italian breakiterator so if I write:

1) "un'alunna" (schoolgirl in English) it is been checked the two strings "un"
and "alunna" and all is not signed as wrong. This is ok

2) "un'alunno" (schoolboy in English) it is been checked the two strings "un"
and "alunno" and all is not signed as wrong. This is not ok becouse "un'alunno"
is a wrong combination it must be "un alunno" without the apostrophe ... but it
is a grammar checking error, so spell checker can not see it

3) "all'alunno" it is been checked the two strings "all" and "alunno", but "all"
is not a corrected Italian word so "all'alunno" is marked as wrong ("all'alunno"
is "allo alunno")

As a biologist, I heartily agree with the comments above. Any scientist will
tell you that adding custom error bars is absolutely critical for presenting
data. Any presentation of data without this "feature" would be immediately
rejected from publication and laughed out of a symposium. I can't use OOCALC's
chart feature for teaching purposes or for my own research for this reason. It
should be implemented immediately.

> The problem will be solved by a recursive lowering algorithm.

I think it is better to have an uppercase algorithm :-)

These problems exists only for title or other part where all letter are write
with uppercase letters.

The spell checker work like this:
1) if a word is all lowercase, than it is correct to have only the first or all
letters in uppercase characters
2) if a word have at least one uppercase letter than that word must be write
exactly as you have found it in the dictionary (if it is uppercase only the
first, than all can be uppercase)

rule 2 must be changed to: than word must be exactly as you have found it in the
dictionary or it is all uppercase (always).
This will solve these problems and I do not think he can create new one.

Exporting as PDF some information is lost regarding fonts.

Please refer to same fonts and sample text as issue # 67731.

The issue is that there is a meta-table exported with a PDF (not sure the
technical name for it), but it is _very_ similar to the scrollbar issue, where
selected parts of the text are sent to the metatable. The meta-table of contents
shows to the left of my PDF in 'Preview'. The PDF is all ok (BOLD, ITALICS, etc)
but the meta-table shows the same block-garbage for the fonts as the scrollbar
issue in 67731...where when you grab the scrollbar and move it around it shows,
page xx / page # total and sometimes some text, but the text is garbaged/mangled
somehow

Fonts look different in italics from PC to MacOSX OO 2.0.3

The issue is apparent with the same font as issue # 67731 has (e-Latin) showing
oddly in italics.

The itelics on the Mac looks very, very weird (letters turned upwards at a 30
degree angle instead of simple italicization).

--- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tue Aug 22 11:11:30 -0700
2006 ---
Hello,
My OS is Linux (Fedora Core 1) and I had been using OpenOffice 1.1.5 until this
week (Aug 22, 2006) when I switched to OpenOffice 2.0.3 and noticed the
following feature on the oo2.0.3 Spreadsheet that was not on oo1.1.5.

When I open a tab-delimited text file with floating point numbers, say,

Row_u133.2 CV_WT CV_MT Symbol
29687 0.4925 0.6073 A1BG
17184 0.8158 0.4418 A2M

On oo2.0.3 spreadsheet when I try to save it back into tab-delimited .csv
format, the floating point numbers are truncated to resemble what appears on
screen. See example below,

"Row_u133.2""CV_WT" "CV_MT" "Symbol"
29687 0.490.61"A1BG"
17184 0.820.44"A2M"

On oo1.1.5 spreadsheet, when I try to save the original back into tab-delimited
.csv format, the result was identical (ignoring " marks on non-numbers) see
example below,

"Row_u133.2""CV_WT" "CV_MT" "Symbol"
29687 0.4925 0.6073 "A1BG"
17184 0.8158 0.4418 "A2M"

As a data analyst, I think this new feature on oo2.0.3 that truncates the
original floating point numbers to look exactly like what appears on the screen
is not an improvement over oo1.1.5's handling export .csv files. I did try
re-formatting the cells to text prior to CSV export which made matters worst as
truncation became permanent. I will be sticking to oo.1.1.5 for the time being.
In case you want to try these files out yourselves, I've put examples of the 3
files up on my website,

www.chip.org/~kho/Original_Tab_Delim_Data_File.txt (original tab-delim file)
www.chip.org/~kho/Original_Tab_Delim_Data_File_oo2-0-3.csv (save from oo1.1.5)
www.chip.org/~kho/Original_Tab_Delim_Data_File_oo1-1-5.csv (save from oo2.0.3)

Thank you in advance for looking at this,

I checked with "2.0.2 German version WIN XP: [680m5(Build9011)]" and can
confirm the HANG with 100% processor load.

I am not sure whether reporter's "lost hyperlink" diagnosis is correct, but I
remember that we had similar problems with the way some images are embedded in
WORD.

I checked with "1.1.4 (German) WIN XP: [645m52 (Build 8824)]" and WORD2000, both
open the document without problem.

The problem disappeared
- after I opened document with 1.1.4 and saved as .doc
- after I opened the document with WORD2000, deleted image of
"Aurelio Arturo" and saved document as .doc.

It would be great to have an option in the frame options to prevent deletion of
a frame. I have a frame including toolbars which execute operations on the
document. If a user accidentially deletes the frame it can't be recovered.

Another note as you work on this. Users are having difficulty using FontOOo to
install Chinese fonts. I suspect one or more of the repositories needs a healthy
update. OOoConv repository has the individual files and they are not zero size.

Hi Berit,

I have added two images, so you can see the dialog window in German and English
language layout.

What I mean is that a description for the "Die ersten x Zeilen" field (or "The
first x rows" field in English) is missing and should be added.

It could be added to the existing paragraph par_id3150973 which deals with the
"Überschrift wiederholen" ("Repeat heading") topic.

Regards,

Guido

happen is to have Times and Helvetica show up in the Font list in OOo. Isn't the
set times.ttftimesbd.ttf timesbi.ttf
timesi.ttf == to Times or is this Times New Roman?

@nerit_bonde:

I said "add:", which means the text is not there at the moment. It should be
added to par_id3152766 to make the explanation more precise.

And please use bold font for the word "Seitenende".

I try to write a step by step description:
-open OOo and a new text document.
-write a simple paragraph "This is only a test"
-open "style and formatting" panel
-select "this is only a test" paragrap on the document
-click "new style from selection" in the "style and formatting" (paragraph
style) panel an write "TRY1"
-select "only" on the document
-click in "character styles" in the "style and formatting" panel
-click "new style from selection" an the enter the name "SUBTRY1"

-right click on "SUBTRY1" Character style
-change only the size in "75%"
-now open paragraph style on "style and formatting" and the right click on
"TRY1"
-change the font size to "30pt"

In the text the size of "only" con't changes.
I don't think that this is a desidered behaviour (I did the test using Mac os X
and Debian Linux Unstable both with OOo 2.0.3).

I hope that this can help
Edoardo

Among http://xml.openoffice.org/ there should be some section concerning
developer documentation for the usage of Office XSLT functionality.

For instance the default XSLT variables provided by the Office are only
described in the sources.

Side note: I always use "current" because OOD680_M1 is not in the list yet

The Issue:

The summary actually already describes the problem enough but I want to also
give a short description in detail:

- Insert a page number field and a page count field in your mailmerge template
(my template has several conditional text fields on one page divided by next
record fields)
- Execute the mailmerge via macro
-> Page number remains 1 on each page. Same with page count which also has value
1 on each generated page

1. Create word-processing document in OOo under one OS.
2. Save document and open in OOo under another OS.
Result: Text displays (and prints) differently than originally.
Expected result: Text displays (and prints) identically the originally.

I first became aware of this issue in pre-2.0 builds of OOo. At work, I was
using OOo under W2K (with a 17" monitor); at home, under Win 98 SE (with a 15"
monitor). It persists today, with SUSE 10.1 (with a 19" monitor) at work.

Text displays -- and prints -- differently under each OS; specifically, tracking
and leading values differ, even though identical fonts are being used in each
environment.

I would suggest that this is pretty close to a show-stopper, since inconsistent
display/printing may discourage adoption of OOo (and ODT) in environments in
which documents may be worked on (collaboratively or otherwise) across multiple
operating systems.
