Here is the issue in more detail. When cells in Calc are formatted as Boolean and explicitly given a value of TRUE, they display TRUE in both the cell itself and the formula bar. When this type of cell is copied down via the corner box (the Fill Down feature), each cell that is copied displays TRUE in both the formula bar and the cell itself. However, the cell values themselves are treated as being non-boolean numbers and the values are propagated down as 1, 2, 3, ... etc. In other words, when Boolean cells are filled down, they are filled as integer values instead of Boolean values. This gives unexpected results when using formulas such as SUMPRODUCT to control a summation with a true/false value. EXPECTED BEHAVIOR: 1) Boolean cells which are filled down should not obtain values other than 0 or 1. 2) A Boolean formatted cell should contain only a boolean value, that is, treated only as a 0 or a 1 for numerical calculations. ACTUAL BEHAVIOR: 1) A Boolean formatted cell which is filled down via a corner drag populates down as increasing integer values: 1, 2, 3, etc, even though the cell still says and contains only TRUE. (This is a new issue, documented here.) 2) When numerical operations are performed on Boolean formatted cells with values other than 0 or 1 (eg 2), the number is not treated as a boolean but rather as a number. (This, I believe, may be related to Issue 58572.) RESULTING INCONSISTENT BEHAVIOR: Depending on the number behind a given Boolean formatted cell, a numerical operation will therefore give different results. EG, a result can occur like line 3 below: 1 * TRUE = 1 (Expected) 1 * FALSE = 0 (Expected) 1 * TRUE = 23 (Unexpected) STEPS TO REPRODUCE: 1) Open a new Calc document 2) Format cell A1 as Boolean Value 3) Enter True in cell A1 4) Using the box in the cell corner, fill down from cell A1 to cell A10 Result: A1:A10 all display TRUE 5) Format cells A1:A10 as number / 0 Result: A1:A10 will contain 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 Expected: A1:A10 should contain 1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1 ...or (continuing from 4 above)... 5) In column B, enter 1 in cells B1:B10 6) In cell C1, enter formula: =SUMPRODUCT(A1:A10;B1:B10) Result: Cell C1 contains 55 Expected: Cell C1 should contain 10 (the product of 1*TRUE summed 10 times) SIGNIFICANCE: This issue might be viewed as two issues: (1) the way that Boolean values are propagated down and (2) the way Boolean values are treated for numerical calculations. (1) is a new issue, documented here; (2) has been documented elsewhere (confer Issue 84226 and Issue 58572). Excel ignores empty cells. From the Excel help for PRODUCT: If an argument is an array or reference, only numbers in the array or reference are counted. Empty cells, logical values, text, or error values in the array or reference are ignored. I think ignored is the keyword, although I noticed that having all cells blank produces 0 in both Excel and Calc... go figure. The lines for windows split and freeze are not technically in any cell; they fall between cells. Thus, the window is split and frozen at the upper and left sides of the cell you have selected. This is the same for both Calc and Excel, and has been a convention for quite some time. Selecting cell A1 and executing Window-Split will split the spreadsheet along its edges; thus no actually splitting will occur. If you were to do the splitting along the bottom and right side edges of the selected cell as you propose, then the same thing would happen for cell ZZ65535 (the last cell in the spreadsheet) as currently happens for cell A1. However, after some playing around, I later copied the exact same file to another server on our network (which I believe is a Windows NT server of some flavor) and experienced the problem described (OOo fails to open). Let me clarify exactly what is occurring... the problem occurs with the full spellcheck (Tools - Spellcheck), not with the inline spellcheck. Also, the Undo button in question is the Undo button in the spellcheck dialog, not the regular undo arrows. Steps to reproduce: 1) Open the document CalcSpellcheckExample (which I will attach). This document has two misspellings (EN-US) 2) Select cell A1 3) Run spellcheck from Tools - Spellcheck 4a) The first misspelling to be discovered is Sunnday. Click change to correct it to Sunday 4b) The second misspelling, Sunnny, comes up as the spellcheck continues 4c) Notice the Undo button in the spellcheck dialog becomes active after hitting change. 5a) Click Undo in the spellcheck dialog. 5b) Notice that Sunnny in the Not in dictionary box changes from red bold to regular black text. 5c) But the correction from Sunnday to Sunday is not undone. 6) Close spellchecker. Notice that the correction from Sunnday to Sunday is still not undone. My guess is the array pointer is one off? If references are not to be updated, then they should NEVER be updated instead of being updated in certain situations and not others. This is aside from the observation that a large number of users have viewed the lack of updating as a bug and reported it as such, making WONTFIX a less than desireable solution. I have read through the spellcheck specification as posted at http://specs.openoffice.org/appwide/index.html. There is no specific specification written for what happens when a user chooses a language with no dictionary. The closest thing I can find is a line which says: Language attribute [None] in the character attributes dialog suppresses hyphenation, thesaurus and spelling. The corresponding illustration displays setting the language to None rather than to a language without a dictionary. The implication is that setting to an actual language should not suppress spellchecking, or if there is no dictionary, a warning should occur. (Probably this should be explicitely added to the specification.) Given that OOo used to display an error or warning in the situation in question (at least according to the other issues referenced) and that this bug can cause severe confusion and user annoyance, in my opinion this should be classified as a defect. This applies whether the conditional formatting is referring to its own or another sheet. By relative, I mean using a cell reference without a $, ie: Sheet1.C1 is a relative reference. Additional comments which may have bearing on this decision: -It is true that even in newer versions of Excel it is not possible to use a reference to another sheet in conditional formatting. (OOo is better in this respect.) -In Excel, despite the use of a hidden absolute reference, when the ENTIRE SHEET is duplicated the conditional formatting on the new sheet references the new sheet, rather than the original sheet (because of the previous point). -Therefore, an OOo user copying an ENTIRE SHEET and migrating from Excel would expect the conditional formatting on the new sheet to reference the new sheet, rather than the old sheet. (This would be a logical thing to have happen.) -By default, OOo Calc uses a complete absolute reference when inserting conditional formatting, including an absolutely referenced sheet name. Thus, to get a relative sheet name (thus enabling copy/paste of cell sections between sheets while preserving relative conditional formatting) a user must change each instance of the sheet name from absolute to relative by removing the $ sign manually. -In most other cases, Calc does not include the sheet name when inserting a cell reference, making copy/paste between sheets work as expected. -Because OOo automatically inserts an absolute sheet name into the conditional formatting even when referencing with the same sheet, it is tedious to go back and remove all these sheet name references in order to enable adequate copy/paste useability -Finally, and most importantly, use of relative sheet names in conditional formatting is currently broken (see issue 66441), therefore using relative sheet names in conditional formatting isn't currently an option for users. I would propose in light of issue 66441 that at least one of several things should happen: -(Enhancement) A use relative sheet name option could be added to the conditional formatting dialog. Given that OOo is now at the 2.0.2 release, perhaps this has been fixed? It sounds like others have tried to duplicate the bug without much success. Perhaps the original poster (geoffarnold) could recheck the bug and see if it has been fixed in a newer version of OOo. If no new action happens on this issue within a few weeks, I would like to close it as invalid (given that it is against an older version and does not seem reproducible). Does anyone object?
