Sorry if the summary is confusing; it is hard to distill. Here is the issue in
more detail.

When cells in Calc are formatted as Boolean and explicitly given a value of
TRUE, they display TRUE in both the cell itself and the formula bar. When this
type of cell is copied down via the corner box (the Fill Down feature), each
cell that is copied displays TRUE in both the formula bar and the cell itself.
However, the cell values themselves are treated as being non-boolean numbers and
the values are propagated down as 1, 2, 3, ... etc.

In other words, when Boolean cells are filled down, they are filled as integer
values instead of Boolean values. This gives unexpected results when using
formulas such as SUMPRODUCT to control a summation with a true/false value.

EXPECTED BEHAVIOR:
1) Boolean cells which are filled down should not obtain values other than 0 or 
1.
2) A Boolean formatted cell should contain only a boolean value, that is,
treated only as a 0 or a 1 for numerical calculations. 

ACTUAL BEHAVIOR:
1) A Boolean formatted cell which is filled down via a corner drag populates
down as increasing integer values: 1, 2, 3, etc, even though the cell still says
and contains only TRUE. (This is a new issue, documented here.)
2) When numerical operations are performed on Boolean formatted cells with
values other than 0 or 1 (eg 2), the number is not treated as a boolean but
rather as a number. (This, I believe, may be related to Issue 58572.)

RESULTING INCONSISTENT BEHAVIOR:
Depending on the number behind a given Boolean formatted cell, a numerical
operation will therefore give different results. EG, a result can occur like
line 3 below:

1 * TRUE = 1 (Expected)
1 * FALSE = 0 (Expected)
1 * TRUE = 23 (Unexpected)

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1) Open a new Calc document
2) Format cell A1 as Boolean Value
3) Enter True in cell A1
4) Using the box in the cell corner, fill down from cell A1 to cell A10
Result: A1:A10 all display TRUE
5) Format cells A1:A10 as number / 0
Result: A1:A10 will contain 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10
Expected: A1:A10 should contain 1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1

...or (continuing from 4 above)...
5) In column B, enter 1 in cells B1:B10
6) In cell C1, enter formula: =SUMPRODUCT(A1:A10;B1:B10)
Result: Cell C1 contains 55
Expected: Cell C1 should contain 10 (the product of 1*TRUE summed 10 times)

SIGNIFICANCE: 
This issue might be viewed as two issues: (1) the way that Boolean values are
propagated down and (2) the way Boolean values are treated for numerical
calculations. (1) is a new issue, documented here; (2) has been documented
elsewhere (confer Issue 84226 and Issue 58572). However, it is the combination
of these two issues which in this case creates a significant problem for a user:
the creation of non-1 Boolean TRUE values unexpected by the user and is
transparent to the user, making the error hard to catch and causing significant
issues when array functions such as SUMPRODUCT are used.

This bug effectively prevents the user from automatically *removing* numbering
that has been applied manually. This can cause a problem in large documents that
are trying to be reformatted.

For example:
1) Open a new document
2) Type a line of text (EG First Heading)
3) Apply the style Heading 1
4) Open the Styles and Formatting dialog
5) Apply a numbering style under List Styles from Styles and Formatting (EG
Numbering 1)
6) Right click the Heading 1 style and select Modify...
7) Under the Numbering tab, set the Numbering Style to None
8) Reapply the Heading 1 style to your line of text

The numbering style will *not* be removed. This is a problem if you are trying
to modify (or even apply a new style) which will remove numbering from a large
section of a document. Also, under the List Styles in Styles and Formatting
there is no option for applying None to a paragraph.

Workaround: Remove the numbering style from the Format menu (Format -
Bullets and Numbering... - Remove button)

Drawback: This method will apply to the local paragraph only, and is quite
cumbersome for working with documents with large numbers of similarly formatted
paragraphs which must be modified.

I think the reason Excel and Calc treat empty cells as a 1 for the purposes of
this function is that then it is possible to multiple an entire line of cells
(eg =product(A1;B1;C1;E1) or =product(A1:G1) and not need to explicitly enter a
1 in all cells that you don't want to affect the calculation. Excel ignores
empty cells.

From the Excel help for PRODUCT: If an argument is an array or reference, only
numbers in the array or reference are counted. Empty cells, logical values,
text, or error values in the array or reference are ignored. I think ignored
is the keyword, although I noticed that having all cells blank produces 0 in
both Excel and Calc... go figure.

Reclosing as WONTFIX and adding ms_interoperability as a keyword because this is
an Excel compatibility issue. (If OOo did it differently, then it could break
spreadsheets imported from Excel.)

Thanks for your input, however, as you stated OOo and Excel are consistent in
the way they treat the Window-Split and Window-Freeze actions. The lines for
windows split and freeze are not technically in any cell; they fall between
cells. Thus, the window is split and frozen at the upper and left sides of the
cell you have selected. This is the same for both Calc and Excel, and has been a
convention for quite some time.

Selecting cell A1 and executing Window-Split will split the spreadsheet along
its edges; thus no actually splitting will occur. If you were to do the
splitting along the bottom and right side edges of the selected cell as you
propose, then the same thing would happen for cell ZZ65535 (the last cell in the
spreadsheet) as currently happens for cell A1.

Closing as WONTFIX, given preservation of Excel compatibility and the
established standard.

For what it's worth, I can't reproduce this issue on our local network (using
seperately a Samba 3.0.20b server). I can open networked documents via
double-clicks fine regardless of: (1) the name, (2) whether or not the drive is
mapped to a local drive or simply specified in Explorer by \\computer\folder\,
and (3) whether or not OpenOffice is set up to use XP native or OOo dialogs.

For what it's worth, I'll repost my comment from 51342:

Functionality of double clicking on a file in \\unc\path works fine when the
server is a Samba server (3.0.20b). However, after some playing around, I later
copied the exact same file to another server on our network (which I believe is
a Windows NT server of some flavor) and experienced the problem described (OOo
fails to open).

Which is to say, it seems to be specifically related to Windows servers only;
Samba servers do not trigger this bug.

Confirmed - Windows XP, SP2 w/ OOo 2.0.4.

Let me clarify exactly what is occurring... the problem occurs with the full
spellcheck (Tools - Spellcheck), not with the inline spellcheck. Also, the
Undo button in question is the Undo button in the spellcheck dialog, not the
regular undo arrows.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Open the document CalcSpellcheckExample (which I will attach). This document
has two misspellings (EN-US)
2) Select cell A1
3) Run spellcheck from Tools - Spellcheck
4a) The first misspelling to be discovered is Sunnday. Click change to
correct it to Sunday
4b) The second misspelling, Sunnny, comes up as the spellcheck continues
4c) Notice the Undo button in the spellcheck dialog becomes active after
hitting change.
5a) Click Undo in the spellcheck dialog.
5b) Notice that Sunnny in the Not in dictionary box changes from red bold to
regular black text.
5c) But the correction from Sunnday to Sunday is not undone.
6) Close spellchecker. Notice that the correction from Sunnday to Sunday is
still not undone.

My guess is the array pointer is one off? But I don't know how the code is
written, so I'll leave that to the devs.

Something else is at play here... for me (and most people), the spellcheck list
pops up almost immediately. I have a Windows XP SP2 P4, OOo 2.0.4. I suspect
that computer performance is not the issue, however. I also see that you said it
is intermittent. Let's see if we can dig up the cause. Can you answer some
additional questions?

1) Is this a fresh install of OOo?
2) What language(s) are you using?
3) Have you installed any dictionaries? Which ones?
4) Have you modified any dictionaries manually (outside of OOo)?
5) Have you edited any dictionaries inside of OOo, via Options?
5) Does it happen consistently with certain words, or does it vary even when
right clicking the same word multiple times?
6) Can you upload a file which is an example of one you've had problems with?

I can try to work with any file you upload to see if I can reproduce the

This issue appears to be a misunderstanding of the CHOOSE function as used in
Calc. In MS Excel, the CHOOSE function can either return values or cell
references. That is, Excel will choose based on context whether to return the
contents of cell A6 or the referece A6 (refering to cell A6).

In Calc, the CHOOSE function returns only values.

Let's use the example from your spreadsheet:

SUM($O6:CHOOSE(($H$2-1),$O6,$P6,$Q6,$R6)) where cells O6-R6 all contain the
value 1.

Excel will return a cell reference from the CHOOSE function based on what the
SUM function needs, resulting in (if $H$2-1 evaluates to 2, for example)
SUM($O6:$P6) after CHOOSE has been evaluated. This is a logical function, and
therefore works.

Calc will return the value of the cell called, however. So (if $H$2-1 evaluates
to 2, for example) the same function will result in SUM($O6:1) after CHOOSE has
been evaluated. This isn't a logical function and results in the error.

I established this difference in behavior by reading the Help files in Excel and
Calc on the CHOOSE function and by doing tests to verify the problem. CHOOSE
function works as described in Help for both programs, but Calc's functionality
is a subset only of Excel's functionality in this case.

6) Select Ok

The specific problem is that OOo Calc sometimes strips the initial apostrophe in
a cell after a CSV import, even if that apostrophe is enclosed in double quotes
(normally denoting an exact text import). Interestingly, the apostrophe seems to
be stripped in all cases except when followed immediately by a number.

Even more interestly, the cell contents appear properly in the import preview.
Once the import takes place, however, the error occurs and the apostrophe's get

OpenOffice imports csv differently than excel. The RFC, unfortunatly,
doesn't disambiguate in such a way to say which implementation is
correct.

OpenOffice needs '' to import an apostrophe (\x27) from CSV.

Excel needs ' to import an apostrophe (\x27) from CSV.

It would be nice if OpenOffice followed Excel's lead since Excel has a
larger install base. I use both and having this inconsistency is
annoying.

Hi. In my opinion, either this issue or issue 66441 should be reopened, because
there is INCONSISTENT behavior, not just undesired behavior. OOo sometimes
updates cell references in conditional formatting properly, and sometimes does
not, depending on the situation. If references are not to be updated, then they
should NEVER be updated instead of being updated in certain situations and not
others.

This is aside from the observation that a large number of users have viewed the
lack of updating as a bug and reported it as such, making WONTFIX a less than
desireable solution.

If you like, I can open a second issue about the inconsistent behavior, or I can
repoen this issue. If I don't receive any comments I will reopen this issue
rather than create a new issue.

Confirmed - Windows XP SP2, OOo 2.0.3-RC5.

This is a case of inconsistent behavior.

From the OOo help:
If you decide to enter a number directly as text, enter an apostrophe (')
first. For example, for years in column headings, you can enter '1999, '2000 and
'2001. The apostrophe is not visible in the cell, it only indicates that the
entry is to be recognized as a text.

OOo help does not state here how it will handle an apostrophe preceding a
non-number string. In practice, OOo strips the leading apostrophe from the
string altogether UNLESS the string is purely a number OR in the case of a
recognized misspelling (?). (This can be observed by following the directions
above, and by trying the combinations below.)

bar). OR, perhaps it should display the apostrophe except in cases where a pure
number has been entered, thus enabling someone to enter a word in single quotes
(eg. 'Something') without having the leading apostrophe disappear.

Confirmed. On my machine (Pentium4 w/ Windows XP SP2) there is a noticeable
delay between selecting the next cell in the range and the update -
approximately 1 second. It seems that OOo waits until it thinks the user is done
changing the range before bothering to recalculate the sum, rather than
recalculating at every cell change as Excel does.

Changing to P4 however, because this is a cosmetic issue with an obvious
workaround (simply wait a second for the updated sum) and it will affect
relatively few users.

Still, it would be quite nice not to have to wait for the update all the time.

is not updated until the shift key is released. (This is a tricky one, because

As issue 66332 has been closed as a duplicate, it is my opinion that this issue
therefore be relabelled as a defect or at least given a target. I have read
through the spellcheck specification as posted at
http://specs.openoffice.org/appwide/index.html. There is no specific
specification written for what happens when a user chooses a language with no
dictionary. The closest thing I can find is a line which says: Language
attribute [None] in the character attributes dialog suppresses hyphenation,
thesaurus and spelling. The corresponding illustration displays setting the
language to None rather than to a language without a dictionary.

The implication is that setting to an actual language should not suppress
spellchecking, or if there is no dictionary, a warning should occur. (Probably
this should be explicitely added to the specification.)

Given that OOo used to display an error or warning in the situation in question
(at least according to the other issues referenced) and that this bug can cause
severe confusion and user annoyance, in my opinion this should be classified as
a defect.

Also, this should in my opinion be a P3, because it is a situation where the
user interface for a common functionality is confusing.

Sorry to post here again, but in light of another issue (issue 66441), this
issue has new relevance.

Additional comments which may have bearing on this decision:

-It is true that even in newer versions of Excel it is not possible to use a
reference to another sheet in conditional formatting. (OOo is better in this
respect.)
-In Excel, despite the use of a hidden absolute reference, when the ENTIRE
SHEET is duplicated the conditional formatting on the new sheet references the
new sheet, rather than the original sheet (because of the previous point).
-Therefore, an OOo user copying an ENTIRE SHEET and migrating from Excel would
expect the conditional formatting on the new sheet to reference the new sheet,
rather than the old sheet. (This would be a logical thing to have happen.)
-By default, OOo Calc uses a complete absolute reference when inserting
conditional formatting, including an absolutely referenced sheet name. Thus, to
get a relative sheet name (thus enabling copy/paste of cell sections between
sheets while preserving relative conditional formatting) a user must change each
instance of the sheet name from absolute to relative by removing the $ sign
manually.
-In most other cases, Calc does not include the sheet name when inserting a cell
reference, making copy/paste between sheets work as expected.
-Because OOo automatically inserts an absolute sheet name into the conditional
formatting even when referencing with the same sheet, it is tedious to go back
and remove all these sheet name references in order to enable adequate
copy/paste useability
-Finally, and most importantly, use of relative sheet names in conditional
formatting is currently broken (see issue 66441), therefore using relative sheet
names in conditional formatting isn't currently an option for users.

I would propose in light of issue 66441 that at least one of several things
should happen:
-(Enhancement) A use relative sheet name option could be added to the
conditional formatting dialog. (Issue 66441 would have to be fixed as well for
this to make a difference.)
-Alternativly, the conditional formatting dialog could insert a relative sheet
name (or no sheet name at all) by default unless a different sheet is
referenced. (This would greatly simplify the copy/paste between sheets issue,
but again, issue 66441 would have to be fixed as well.)
-The help should explain about copying conditionally formatted cell blocks
across sheets and that absolute references will need to be changed. (This would
help users confused with existing funcionality.)
-When copying an entire sheet, a dialog box could ask whether or not the user
wants to change absolute references internal to the sheet from the old to the
new sheet.

Basically, it comes down to either having an intuitive user interface or else
having a help file that explains why the interface isn't implemented in a way
that many/most people find intuitive.

I can confirm, using the English version of the software - OOo 2.0.3-RC5, that
the sort order is incorrect, as you posted. As it is, using the attached
document and setting the cell language to Romanian for all cells, the
alphabetical sort doesn't work in the correct (Romanian) order. Therefore, I
will mark as confirmed.

I'm not sure how the sort order for these odd letters should be treated in
English, but it seems like after setting language to Romanian the sort should
work properly, but it does not.

However, I don't have access to a Romanian localized version to see if that
works correctly. Have you tried a Romanian localized build? To download, go to:
http://ro.openoffice.org/. It may solve your problem.

dependant on another cell, then inserted lines before the cell pair, after the

This seems to have been an issue before as well; confer issue 18370. According
to i18370, there should be an error message when an unsupported language is
being spellchecked. (Such an error message aparently used to come up in 1.1rc3.)
However, no such error message appears in 2.0. Confer also issue 16940.

I'm going to leave this issue open, as in my opinion this is a useability defect
and (possibly?) represents a regression from 1.1, when aparently an error
message did exist.

Tentatively setting the regression keyword, although I don't have 1.1.x
installed to verify that the error message used to work properly.

option grayed out if spellchecking is not available (among other things). (Do I
have that right?) The other is, in my opinion, a bug: the user is told that the
spellcheck is complete when in fact no spell checking occured at all.

For the bug, there is another issue filed. Rather than change this issue from
feature request to defect, I will point to the other issue: issue 66332.

In my opinion, if i66332 is to be closed as duplicate then this issue should be
changed to defect. The lack of error message when no dictionary is available is
a defect which causes useability problems, especially as such an error message
used (?) to work correctly (confer issue 18370).

It IS possible to edit the misspelled word without closing spell checker; simply
click on the word in the spell check window and modify it. (It will be
highlighted with red type.)

However, you are correct, it is not possible to edit a suggestion in the
suggestion list.

In my mind editing a suggestion is not very critical; you can always look at the
suggestion then edit the original word.

Changing type to Enhancement request (as I don't believe editing a word in the
suggestion list was ever intended behavior) and setting priority to P4.

Draw's snap to grid feature does not seem to work properly. When dragging an
object around the grid, the grid snaps to the mouse pointer, not the corner of
the object. Thus it is difficult if not impossible to actually align the edges
of an object accurately with the grid (thus defeating the purpose of snap to
grid entirely).

To reproduce:
1) Open a new drawing
2) Turn on the grid under Tools - Options... - OpenOffice.org Draw -
Grid. I used 0.50 grid, 0 intermediate points.
3) Turn on snap to grid and visible grid in the same location, then close the
options dialog
4) Insert a basic object (say a rectangle) using the drawing toolbar
5) Click and drag the object around the grid, noting that
   (a) The object snaps at the correct interval, but
   (b) The object's corner does not align with the grid
6) Unclick in order to drop the object, noting that the point where you
originally clicked the object now seems to align with the grid, but the corner
doesn't.
7) Click and drag the object, then attempt to drop the object back into it's
original location. Note that 99% of the time you can't drop the object in the
same spot you picked it up, because the point of snap reference seems to change
each time you click the object.

For me, this renders the snap to grid feature entirely useless, unfortunately.

There has been no further action on this issue in 6 months. Given that OOo is
now at the 2.0.2 release, perhaps this has been fixed?

It sounds like others have tried to duplicate the bug without much success.
Perhaps the original poster (geoffarnold) could recheck the bug and see if it
has been fixed in a newer version of OOo.

If no new action happens on this issue within a few weeks, I would like to close
it as invalid (given that it is against an older version and does not seem
reproducible). Does anyone object?

but I have not experienced this problem (Firefox 1.0 and 1.5). Also, what
version of Mozilla were you using at the time? I am assuming you are using
