The Writer displays a message "Importing document" and starts
doing it, but never completes it.

Open a new blank text document with Writer. Insert a formula.
Then run Impress and create a new presentation.
Go to the formula, click on it and copy it.
Go to the presentation and paste it.
Then try to enlarge it clicking and dragging. Impress will not
allow you to do it. Then you can right-click on the formula
(a popup appears), select "Position and size", and uncheck the
"size" checkbox in "position and size" tab, and hit "OK".
Impress still will not allow you to do it.
This is a regression problem because this was possible with 3.0.
This is not a duplicate bug of issue #100041.

I agree, the problem occurs only when there is also a second OOo doc
opened. Effectively, I had a text document and a presentation one
opened, and was cutting and pasting text from the first into the second
to make a presentation.

When editing an html document, ctrl-click on an hyperkink
local to the same document makes the cursor jump to the target,
and the window scrolled to it. This is a very useful feature.
However, there is no way to go back to the previous place,
the one containing the hyperlink.
This is allowed, though, with footnotes: the navigator allows
to jump to a footnote, and to go back.

Take the attached document, it contains two pages. Put the
cursor on the first line of the first page. Then scroll the
document so that the second page is displayed in the Writer's
window.
Then minimize the window, and subsequently maximize it.
You will see that the document has been scrolled so as to
display the page in which the cursor lies.
The same happens if, instead of minimizing/maximizing you
display a window of another application that covers entirely
the Writer's one. This is odd because displaying windows should
have no consequences with what contents is in them.

Run the Writer, create a new blank document, insert a frame in it
and draw a shape.
Run Impress, create a presentation from a template, go to the
Writer, select the frame and copy it. Then go to Impress, and
paste the frame. Then double click on the frame, an inner
window appears. Then click outside the window, the window
borders disappear, the frame is shown, but also a white rectangle
that overlaps another area of the slide.

[sw-issues] [Issue 47844] Restart paragraph numberin g should be settable per Style

The issue has not been resolved in subsequent versions. The problem is still
present in 3.1.
Basically, what is needed is the same behavior of in html: the possibility
to define a paragraph style that restarts numbering of the items that come
after it.
Note that how items are numbered is logically an attribute of the paragraph
style that starts a list of items, at least in all word processors that allow
separation of contents from formatting. Word processors that do not allow such
separation force users to set attributes on paragraph occurrences, which is
what OOWriter forces to do.

Borsotti -> OD: if the problem occurs also with automatic saving
there is no workaround because the user cannot make an updtate
before the automatic saving occurs. Of course, s/he could disable
automatic saving, but then s/he risks to loose the entire document
in case of a crash.

I keep enabled the automatic saving each 15 minutes.
I guess then that the problem could be due also to
a race between saving started automatically and pagination
that can occur when some text is added.

An additional info: when I open the document (be it the original one or the
second attachment, corso-saved), the Writer displays the navigator sidebar.
Then, without me doing anything, I see the navigator sidebar flashing, and the
main document window too. I have the impression that the Writer is paginating
repeatedly the document. Could this issue be due to this repagination?

I have no idea how I can reproduce it, but I will try
all the same.
Essential pieces of figures disappearing from their
original place is a data loss.
I have no idea where they have gone, besides seeing them
scattered on the borders of pages. I even tried to move
some back to their original place, but they seem to stick
to their new position.
I understand that reproduceable problems are easier to fix;
however, something can be done also on the ones that cannot
be reproduced. The problem seems to occur only with lines.
So, having a look to the code that deals with their placement
may reveal something incorrect there.

On page 196 of the attached document, there is a figure:
all the lines with arrows in it have been moved to the
top-left of the page.
Before saving they were joined the rectangles in the
figure.
The same problem occurs in many other figures of the
document.
I have no idea how to reproduce this with a smaller document.
The operating system is Vista.
In my opinion, the priority of this bug is P2 because it
is corrupting a document. Indeed I was even thinking it would
be P1 since it can have legal consequences: I cannot deliver
the corrupted document as a result of a contract.

The attached document has been saved and then reopened.
After it had been reopened, many lines present in figures
got displaced close to the page borders. I.e. most figures
got corrupted.
A couple of times, right after reopening the document, Writer
crashed. The Writer sent automatically a crash report by
means of an automatic mail.
P.S. The attached document is copyrighted.

I closed and then reopened a document, and many figures
got corrupted: many lines got moved to the top of the
page. See the attachment screen capture.
I think this is the very same problem.
This must be priority one because it is corrupting
documents.

Take the attached presentation. It contains a formula.
Try to resize it dragging with the mouse. It does not
allow to be resized. Then display the pop-up menu clicking
with the right mouse button, and select Position and Size.
The Protect Size checkbox is selected. De-select it.
Now you can resize the formula. However, once you have done
it, the size gets protected again, and there is no way to
unprotect it permanently. Note that size gets protected even
the first time you enter a formula.

What is important is that you could at least reproduce it
with "update all". I tried to reproduce the problem reducing
further the document, but removing paragraphs or sections,
or page breaks, etc. makes the problem disappear.
I guess it might be due to some bug in the formatting algorithm,
like, e.g. using some not-initialized variable, or because
of some races.

Take the attached text document, select the frame,
hit the "cut" button on the toolbar, and then the
"undo" button on the toolbar. The ordering of the
rectangles is changed. In the original one rectangle
7 is behind all others, then comes 4 over it, 3 and 5
over it, and then the others. In the new picture,
4 is instead over 3 and 5.
This problem occurs also randomly when saving and
reopening a document, or unexpectedly when editing
text outside the picture.
This is a P2 problem because the contents of the
documents get corrupted.

I might agree that it could be be a P1, but not that it is not
a P2. Of course, I do not know how many users are affected.
But anyone that would find 30 blank pages in his document would
objectively think that an essential functionality of the product
is affected by that bug. By the way, the first time that it occurred,
the Writer crashed, a window appeared telling me that the problem
had been sent to SUN (I guess some data describing the crash).
P.S. perhaps the ".dot" extensions of the attached file is misleading.
The document has nothing to do with Words. It is a Openoffice Writer
document that originated from typing it in the Writer, and not importing
from Word.

The document is not a Word import. I have typed it afresh
from within the Writer. It is a P1 because it relates to
the very basic functionality of a word processor. Forcing
an author to spend a whole day trying to make a final
(and important) document presentable (which is not when it
has dozens of blank pages) is a P1 issue.

I have exported the attached text document as PDF.
Before exporting, the Writer repaginates the document.
This is done leaving some blank pages. In the attached
document, between the last chapter and the frame there
are 5 blank pages. I have reduced as much as possible the
document to help troubleshoot the bug. In the original
one there were 30 blank pages. The problem can be seen
directly in the writer (and of course, also opening
the pdf).

Open a new presentation, hit "next" using all the defaults,
eventually an empty slide appears on the screen.
Press "outline" and enter a title for the slide.
Then iconify the window with the button at the right of the
window top.
Display then the window: the slide title appears as selected.
This should not happen, and is particularly annoying because
you likely start typing thinking to add new text, and instead
you cancel the slide title.
This defect forces you to ckick on the slide each time you
display the window before doing anything else.

The "search forward" and "search backwards" button on the navigator
window work as expected (much the same as most of the other applications
in the world, Firefox for one), and do not have the defect I have filed.
I understand the explanation regarding the movement of the cursor, but
all the same the behavior is not intuitive, and is not consistent with
that of the navigator.

When editing documents, a need often arises to compare what is
present on different pages (and that cannot be seen simultaneously
on the screen), possibly moving some text to and fro.
This is possible in Calc (split window), but is not possible in
the Writer even if the need is exactly the same.
The request is to have it in the Writer too.

Open a new document and type these lines:

foo
foo

then place the cursor at the very beginning (i.e. before the firs "f"),
open the "find" window, enter "foo" in the "search for" input field, and
hit twice the "find" button. The second "foo" will be selected.
Then press "more options" in the search window, and check "backwards".
Thus press "find" ... nothing happens! You have to press it again to
make it move on.

Open a new document, type a line of text (e.g. "foo"), then on a new line insert
a section. Put the cursor at the beginning of the section and introduce a line
(e.g. "bar"). The document looks like:

foo

bar

Then click the mouse before "foo" and drag it right after "bar" (i.e. after the
"r", and not on the line below.
Then cut the selected text, and paste it in the same place.
The section has disappeared.

I have tested it in release 3.0.1 on Vista.

Borsotti: my platform is an AMD Athlon 64 X2, and the operating
system is Vista.
In my opinion it is a bug because the action the user is doing
is to move an object, and snappig it to its original position
is the opposite of moving. Anyone can also easily try it and
see how annoying this is.

Open a new document and draw a line. Then select the line and drag
it with the mouse. The line can be placed almost everywhere in the
page, at any pixel position, except close to the previous position.
Drag the line far away from the original position, and then drag
it slowly approaching the original one, which is still visible.
The line that is being moved snaps to its original one as if it was
still there, while effectively it is being moved.
This means that if you want to move the line some pixels away, you
cannot drag it.
The expected behavior of snapping should exclude the object being moved
from the picture so that it does not attract shapes when dragged.
Besides that, there should be a way to disable snapping to objects
entirely.

When word completion is enabled, and the initial few characters of a word
(present in the word list) are entered, a completion is presented.
When there is more than one completion, and the presented one is not the
one wanted, the user can either reject completions at all, and complete
himself the word, or enter ctrl-tab to cycle thru completions. In this case
word completion is almost useless since the number of ctrl-tab's to be
entered and the pain to hit two keys simultaneously is most of the times
higher than completing the word.
In my everyday experience at least half of the words have more than one
completion. This means that a very useful feature fails to provide its benefits
half of the times.
This could be overcome by displaying the completions one each second, having the
enter key (or the configured one) accept the dispayed one. Alternatively,
a popup could be displayed showing all completions and letting the user click
on the desired one, but this makes the user move a hand from the console to the
mouse.

I have tried to install release 3.0.1, but it does not install unless I remove
release 3.0.0 (which I am using).
The exact operations that I did are:
 - start the Writer, a untitled blank document appears
 - left-click at the top-left position inside the page margin (i.e. the very
first place in which it is possible to enter text
 - type "bla bla" (and do not hit the return key)
 - with the mouse select "bla bla", i.e. left click before the first "b" and
drag the mouse past the last "a"
 - click on the font color icon on the toolbar and then on the blue color
 - left-click past "bla bla": now it appears in blue, and the cursor is past it
 - hit then the return key: the blue text becomes black

Open a new text document. Insert a frame, and specify its dimensions (e.g.
50mm by 50mm, or 5in by 5in). Then click on the rectangle in the drawing toolbar
and move (quickly) the mouse on the frame and click, drawing a rectangle.
You will notice that while you are dragging the mouse to obtain a rectangle
of the size you want, the document scrolls autonomously, changing the size
of the figure you are drawing. This is due to a toolbar that disappears
autonomously while you are drawing.
This scrolling makes drawing very difficult: it is like using a pencil on
a piece of paper that moves.

Open a new text document, type some words, select them and click on the "font
color" icon on the toolbar, actually, on the slider with the down arrow icon
on it. The font color window appears. Select a color, say, blue. Then click
at the end of the typed words. You see them now appear in the selected color.
Hit then the "enter", or "return" key: you see the colored words change to black
words. The same happens if you, instead of changing color, would highlight them.

I have tried release 3, but have seen that it does not resolve the issue.
This issue is VERY important because when working with styles one should
never resort to apply manual formatting to anything. It is also contrary
to the XML approach of separation between contents and formatting that
requires that all formatting be kept in styles.
Other word processors have this feature. Not having it makes transition
from other word processors to OO Writer quite cumbersome.

I would like to raise the priority to P2.

[sc-issues] [Issue 87682] pasting comma separated va lues does not split

I do agree that it is not a bug.
One of the main goals of an application such as a spreadsheet is to allow users
to perform tasks easily. Values copied into spreadsheets are mostly taken from
other sources, that separate them with some delimiter such as spaces, tabs,
commas, etc. The most common operation on a sequence of values is to perform
a same action on each of them. Therefore, it is very likely that users will
place them eventually in separate columns. Forcing users to follow longer
sequences of clicks for frequent operations seems contrary to usability.
A possible solution could be to let users define the behavior of the paste
operation: whether it splits or not.

In release 2.3, selecting a text made of comma separated values from, e.g.
a DOS command prompt window and pasting it into a cell resulted in displaying
directly the Text to Column window, in which the user could tell Calc to
split the text in columns.
With release 2.4 the behaviour is different: the text is immediately pasted
without asking. The user has then to select the cell, select the Data->Text to
Column menu and then to ask to split the cell.
This takes much more time and clicks than before. The operation has become more
cumbersome.

Open the attached file, place the cursor at the end of the first line.
Then click on the italic button on the toolbar: it does not deselect,
and consequently there is no way to type in non-italic font.
