I have long wondered how to point the OOo developers to the fact that while more
and more new features are added to OOo (like Base and new proposed UIs), there
are a LOT of P3 issues with much interest which have not been solved (or even
looked at) for years!

This is why I intend to collect such issues in this meta-issue and reference
them from here. People can add further issues they come across if are are 2
years old, important (in their opinion) but not solved yet.
As a hint: An issue can be considered important if
- there is no easy workaround
- it blocks the adaptation of OOo for you or in your organization
- it has more than 20 votes or 10 CC readers.

Here is what I have found so far, grouped by topic:

Year Issue Description
2002 Issue 9370 Off-margin page background
2005 Issue 42019 Gradient and Hatching for Page Background
2003 Issue 22753 Image Cropping with jpeg preview ok but on the page wrong
(which turned out to be a cropping problem with linked images)
Here some issues of mine, confirmed by OOo member(s):
2005 Issue 45499 Applying frame style to image ignores image aspect ratio
2005 Issue 45501 Inconsistent behaviour applying frame style to an image

Some from bibliographic project:
Year Issue Description
2002 Issue 4260 Proposals for Bibliographic facility enhancements.
2005 Issue 44189 Bibliography entry in document is not reflecting
 updated values in Bibliography database
2007 Issue 73465 Enhancement of the insert bibliography entry dialog
2003 Issue 13009 Option to set sorting of bibliographic entries
and Issue 28574 Sorting bibliography entries
were closed as duplicate, but (a) are not yet solved and (b) got lost in the
huge meta-issue they are now included. Given that for an code insider it is
TRIVIAL to sort the entries in the list and make the dropdown larger, it is poor
that this hasn't been solved yet.

Some from formula editor (One was reported 8 years ago!!!)
2001 Issue 972 Alignment of baselines of formula and text in writer
2004 Issue 26446 inherit font size of formulas from paragraph
2002 Issue 5156 colors in formulas
and Issue 45775 Allow to inherit formula colour (color) from paragraph text
 (... a similar topic)
2005 Issue 41502 need scalable slash
2005 Issue 45511 Integral sign too small and not scalable

I am confident that when these issues are resolved, then OOo will have much more
acceptance, f.e. in scientific and legal fields and in companies which are
strict about corporate identity.

Sub-component programming means Macros, Basic, API and so on in OOo.
 Not to-dos for the programmers
I see. Could you please update the subcomponent description accordingly?
Currently it is too general: Use this component if the feature/enhancement is
mainly related to programming tasks.

But it remains that you address the *wrong* problem here.

I understand.
Several people (according to their comments) have been under the impression that
issues were indeed forgotten. Good to hear this is not the case.

Maybe the problem is that, apart from a OOo Later target there is no
indication that issues have been or will be re-evaluated according to the
criteria in the well-known why_all_issues_are_equal document you mention.

P.S. I tried to increase objectivity by creating a query for the given criteria,
but failed: The query would run forever and time out as the criteria became more
complex (e.g. using regex for the number of CC listeners).

Please ... stay polite. These guys work hard, I am sure.

I also know that OOo has too few developers (or too few funding, as you prefer)
to get all the issues solved in a timely manner. Its the same with almost every
software company.
(Unfortunately I am a Java programmer and already involved in another project;
and I cannot fix every software myself.)

Closing as WONTFIX.

In the picture properties, click he option Follow text flow.

IMHO it is unintuitive that this is not the default behaviour.
But at least it works now.

For the second case, please give a sample document.

I wish I knew which document it was... I'm closing the issue for now until I
encounter the problem again to give you a sample. OK?

Following issue has occurred several times already, even with OOo2.x, in a
manner that is hard to predict. Here are two scenarios, which likely have a
similar cause:

1.
I had a text containing (linked) images inserted relative to the paragraph, in
this case spreading across the whole page. Later I added text at the page
containing the image near the bottom. As the text became longer the lowest
paragraphs and the image were supposed to move to the next page. The text did,
but the image moved out over the page's text area until the very bottom of the
page. Some line of text even moved behind the image!!! (Invisible in my
screenshot, for obvious reasons.) Only when the whole paragraph that originally
was above the image, moved even further down, suddenly the image was moved to
the next page.
And what is most interesting: It stayed there when I did undo. I was, however,
able to reproduce this problem by deleting and re-inserting text on the previous
page again.

2. Similar case, but with test this time: Sometimes I noticed that a document of
mine would show a lot of emtpy space at the bottom of the page, when opened. The
paragraph from the next page could easily fit there or at least start there
(even taking orphans and widows into account). When I delete the paragraph break
between this and the previous paragraph and re-insert the break then the second
paragraph indeed gets correctly located on the first page. Again, undo will keep
the correct behaviour and not revert to the wrong one seen before.

Although I haven't tried to reproduce this at will, I have the feeling that in
such cases it can happen that after saving the document, closing OOo and
reloading the document the just corrected pagination error will appear again.

Issue found on a WinXP SP 3 PC. If you need further information, let me know.

I ran into this issue today with OOo3.0 m9 (!) on WinXP SP2.

How can it be that an image cropping bug hasn't been fixed for years?
Do you need more reproducable examples?

What I found today were two (possibly related) effects:
- Cropping an image on the left side would show a correct preview, but on the
page the image would be stretched to the left into the (correctly calculated)
space. Of course the image aspect ratio was NOT supposed to change.
- After I set an image to Original size it would ignore any cropping applied,
even if deleted and reinserted.

Sorry to say this, but the crop function seems so buggy to me it is almost
unusable for an everyday user.

But encountered on WinXP SP3, German language. The option is called Autom.
Größe there.

To reproduce
- create a new empty document
- create a frame template where you set a width of, lets say, 4.0 cm.
- Check on AutoSize in the hight section. Leave the minimum height to
0.04 cm.
- Insert an image into the the document and apply the frame template.

Result:
The image will get EXACTLY the entered height (0.04 cm) instead of calculating
its height from the image ratio, as is suggested by the tooltips by the AutoSize
option.
Unchecking AutoSize gives the same result, suggesting that the option is
simply ignored by the application.

Being the original reporter I feel like I should respond to the recent comments
as well:

1. Please read my first comment. The Alt key combinations were just one out of
three examples, so please don't reduce the issue to just the Alt+... part.

2. tommy27 wrote
people who do not need Alt+soemthing hotkey could easily leave those
 unassigned.
Exactly. Nobody would be hurt.
I might add that probably most users only work with OOo under one OS only and
therefore wouldn't even notice that the shortcut possibilities might be
different on different OS.

3. The discussion whether OOo is a M$ Office clone or not seems totally
irrelevant to me. Given that most OOo users are Windows users, offering a
Windows-only solution would still make sense imho. Even offering features only
available on Mac OS and/or Linux can make sense. There is imho no problem with
OS specific features in OOo as long as they are documented for the user.
Besides a lot of features in OOo are used only by a minority of people, and
compared to them the features suggested in this issue have (quite obviously) a
LOT of potential users.

So the feature wish is still valid.
I'd ask the developers to either
(a) reject the wish
(b) implement it or
(c) set a schedule for when it will be done/decided on
(BTW. Same goes for other bugs/requirements that havn't seen an update for

IMHO this should be rated BUG, not ENHANCEMENT, since the user is lured into

@tl
As you correctly note, the sign is appropriate (or maybe just slightly too
large) for an integral with a one line formula behind.
My point however was, that I want the symbol to automatically scale according to
the size of the formula behind. If it is a fraction or anything spanning two or
more lines, it should be larger. This is not so much a font problem imho.

I agree that cdeval's solution is relatively easy to implement, but I don't
understand one thing:
If the information that a formula is baseline aligned with the surrounding text
is not stored in the file, how is the OOo Math module supposed to know after
reloading such a document that the user wanted the formula to be aligned in such
way? OOo would never know THAT it has to check and (if necessary) recalculate
the vertical alignment, as far as I understand this approach.

cdeval also wrote:
 2) Currently, I you change text attribute (font, size, color, ...) of a
paragraph which includes a formula, this one doesn't change because these
parameters are independant of text. So, you get a difference between text and
formula. I think it wouldn't be a defect if alignement wouldn't change. A
double click on formula to open math module will recalculate the right
position. And if there is too much formulae to recalculate position one by
one, add-on such as dmaths or CmathOOo will do the job

This sounds like a bad hack to me. In every software professional for
professional use (and I assume OOo is such software), the user must be able to
RELY on the software to follow a decision the user has once done. If the user
tells OOo that a certain formula must be aligned correctly with the text, then
the user will simply expect OOo to maintain this state, no matter if the
document is closed/reopened, text size is changed, the formula is changed or
whatever! Any solution that requires the user to remember to update the formula
or all formulae explicitly should only be short term solution.

Hi mba,

I think there is (at least) one good solution:

OTOH if we made it a real option for positioning as also requested
in comments in this issue we had to calculate the position of the
formula each time when we load the document.

Not if you store the information twice in the file format:
- Store the information that the formula is baseline aligned
- Store the current value where it was last positioned.
The latter will allow quick positioning when the document is loaded, the former
will contain the rule for recalculation whenever recalculation becomes
necessary.

We also face contradiction in the OASIS TC as this positioning will force
any ODF readers to reimplement the baseline calculation by themselves.

Not a good argument imho. Any word processor displaying wanting to display
documents has already to do quite a lot of calculations in oder to correctly
display a document's layout. I cannot believe adding baseline recalculation
makes that much of a difference then. Maybe this issue can be relaxed if the ODF
specification contained a proposed calculation algorithm in programming language
independent form. Converting this into C, Java, whatever should then not be a
big problem. Maybe someone could even write a small utility program that could
be used from different software. (Just thinking loud.)
... Or am I misunderstanding the concerns here?

My opinion is that any solution, whatever it may be, must always store the
information that the formula was aligned by the basemap IN THE DOCUMENT. Quick
hacks, e.g. trying to infer this information from, lets say, any static position
of the formula as suggested above will only cause us grief later - and they are
unreliable. I'd rather have document format change in order to get a CLEAN
solution than a quick hack that works in 90% of all cases only (any maybe in
OOo, but not KOffice or something like that)

It would be bad for its reputation if only a few months after its
 birth we changed it incompatibly.

We are not talking about few months after its birth any more now. Of course,
the number of incompatible file format updates must be kept to a minimum, but
how else will there be significant progress in OpenDocument if not by extending
the standard. Not that this would not impact backward compatibility, so old
documents would not become invalid. ... And you can expect people to update
their software from time to time, especially if it is Open Source software like
OOo or KOffice.

I'm even afraid that old OOo versions will report an
error on loading documents with a new value for vertical-pos (though I'm not
sure). This would be even worse compared to MS Office problems of the past.

If so this would be bad indeed, but it would show a general problem that must be
solved both in the ODF specification and the software: Any specification
compliant software should be required to accept (or ignore) formerly unknown
elements in the file format without throwing exceptions!!! It must have a
fallback solution in case it doesn't know the value for a known attribute.

Just my 2 cents.

@oooer:
You see this from a strict scientifically point of view when you say bend the
truth. I may point out that Office suites are used (and are to be used) by all
sorts of people, some of which might not even care about scientific statistics,
just want a nice fitting for visualization.
Take f.e. a businessman that wants to visualize the mean growth of their
company's profits and which knows that it had 0 profits in, lets say, 2000,
because it the company was just founded this year. He/she wants a diagram with a
line going through the (2000, 0) point simply for the look of it.

Also sometimes constraints such as fixed points simply exist. Sometimes it is
better for a computer model to prefer a slightly wrong relationship formula over
the correct regression, simply to avoid computation side effects and artefacts,
or to simplify calculation. You'd maybe call this unscientifically, but such
tradeoffs are imho justified in science - as long as they are documented.
(I won't go deeper in this - this mailing list is the wrong place for such
debates.)

Specifically to your comments:
- Having warning dialogs if the user does something unscienfically would be
very appropriate in a scientific software like an actual statistics program. For
a general office suite I find this out of scope. Imho OOo cannot (and should
not even try) to find out when, lets say, diagramm types are inappropriate,
diagram colors are hard to tell apart, formulae are nonsense or anything of this
sort.

 - The human brain is much better at seeing the best fit than an incorrectly
 applied bit of maths.
You seem to have a much better brain for this, since with my brain I would not
dare to fit a line manually, except for a rough sketch. ;-)
But seriously, people don't use OOo's diagram features to paint. And I don't
like this penalty approach: If you are not doing strict statistics, use OOo
Draw and paint your line by hand.

Thanks for your thoughtful comment, oooer.

May I suggest following compromise: There SHOULD be a feature to have a graph
going through the point of origin, but it should NOT be termed linear
regression, since it is none, as you pointed out. Maybe it could be termed
Best linear fit though point of origin or anything similar that makes a quick
point without being confused with linear regression or other inappropriate
statistical terms. (Suggestions welcome.)

Adding a line by hand is not a solution at all, since the whole idea of the
feature is, that the slope is calculated from the data. When drawing the line by
hand one would have to calculate the line's angle manually beforehand.
Beside that, drawing on diagrams is imho never a good idea, since the diagram
may change in size and content, so the drawn line wouldn't fit any more after
any change.

Yes, with OOo2.0.2 on WinXP SP2 the behaviour is still exactly as desribed.
I'll update the issue's version to reflect this.
Also I'll set this confirmed and OS:All, since kb could obviously reproduce
it under linux.

Thanks for pointing to this duplicate, 30790. Obvioulsly I am not the only one
having problems with the small integral signs.
I just want to express explicitely that I acknowledge the objection raised in
issue 26048, which is that integral signs should not scale automatically by
contents since this could produce many different integral signs on one line of
formulae - which doesn't look nice. However I believe that the suggestion I made
- having two (max. three) explicite integral sign sizes - does circumvent this
problem and is also easy to use.
In general I consider it important that the user has control over the size (as
all comments so far agree).

Following note should be made here (It drove me nearly crazy today until I found
the solution.):

The formula rendering quality is NOT ONLY dependent on OpenOffice. Under windows
it is also much dependent on the anti-aliasing selected in Windows directly.

1. Under Linux: Anti-aliasing is turned on and off using the option
   OpenOffice.org - View - Screen font antialiasing
   (German: OpenOffice.org - Ansicht - Bildschirmschriften glätten

2. Under windows such option doesn't exist. It exists in the Control Panel.
Open View options in the Control Panel, select tab Display - Effects.
In the dialog there are options to select no anti-aliasing, Normal or
   ClearType anti-aliasing.
What is selected, heavily determines how the formulae look in OOo. Moreover
ClearType can be configured (google to find out how to do this), which will
   result in different looks again.

... I wonder how to check quality of formula rendering under these
circumstances

Anti-aliasing was disabled in Windows. (I didn't know there was such setting.
Now I know.) This explains why I found anti-aliasing for the formulae to be

I believe I found another near-workaround, but it would work after a very minor
change to the code (I believe so, I don't know!):

Add a header or footer to the page (or the page template). Insert the image into
the header or the footer. Edit the image properties. Now you can adjust the
alignment to be, f.e. left and top relative to the full page. What's left
to do is to set the image size. For the width this will usually work fine, you
just have to set the image width to the ration of (page width/text are width),
maybe 130% or so.
The problem is the height. Headers or footers are usually 1-2 cm height, so one
would need to scale the image size to maybe 1500% (of the header height). This
is currently not supported since the variable used to store the image size in
percent is only a byte variable (i.e. it can be max. 254%). If this could be
changed to be ushort data type (0-65536) or something like this, one could
scale the image to fill the whole page. Shouldn't be that big a problem, should
it?

Update: Above solution really works, of one uses absolute measures (i.e.
21cmx29.7 cm), not relative measures (120%x1500%). I'll attach a sample
document.

Note1: With the image in the background it is hard to edit the text. The cursor
will always highlight the image instead of the foreground text. So better add
the image at the end of the editing process.

Note2: This seems to work only with OOo2.0, in OOo1.1.5 it seems not to be
possibe to have images larger than the header/footer height in the header resp.
footer. (As expected exporting the backgound image to .sxw from OOo2.0 doesn't
work either.)

Note3: I don't think this workaround obsoletes a real solution of the issue,
where the document stays easily editable even with the image in the background.

The way Excel handles this is indeed not a good archetype. I always found it
confusing.
Your suggestion on this sounds sensible. (Until the user edits any cell, or
starts a new selection.) That said, I don't know how easy or hard it will be to
implement this. But I will pass it to the developers. Thanks for the suggestion.

Confirmed.

Update: Since I (and others) first reported this issue there has obviously been
a major change in formula rendering: I find that in 2.0RC1 anti-aliasing is
turned off. The result is that the equation sign is no longer blurred, but now
it happens often at the standard settings (100% and 12pt TimesNewRoman), that
one of the two equation sign bars is not visible at all. So the = looks like a
minus.
(This effect is only seen when formula editing is finished, not while the
formula is in editing mode. P.S. Tested in Writer, not Math.)

Hi eyalzvi,

how exactly should this work. I mean, active selection and clipboard content
are two different things.

1. The active selection is already marked by inverting the colors. If you mark
some (usually white) cells, they become black until you click somewhere else. So
I guess that's not what you mean.

2. When you copy their contents to clipboard, there's indeed no frame. Yes, I
know programs that use crawling ants for this. The point is: If you continue
your work, should this marker disappear? How long should it stay? Until the
clipboard contents changes? Wouldn't it be annoying to have this crawling ant
frame (or something similar) aroung while doing other work?

Please share your thoughts on this with us.

(P.S. This is not a bug, but a wish for a new feature. Corrected.)

I don't find this problem with OOo2.0RC1 on WinXP SP2.
However I find that the scrollbar slider changes it's size. (Is this a bug or
intended?) It is small if column 1 or 2 (the big one) are the leftmost ones and
much larger when I scroll further to the right. My interpretation is that this
behaviour might be dependent on the window manager (or OS in this case).

So someone with Linux should check this there.

Your solution would require that the PC knows whether you want to
- paste the column's content over the content in this column OR
- insert the column before the selected column

But I have an alternative suggestion, at least for moving columns/lines: Many
table implementations today allow table column reordering, i.e. you just drag a
column header and drop it between two other columns (often with a small arrow
indicating between which two columns it would be placed). The only difference
would be that in OOo this would not just visually reorder the columns, but
actually move the contents of affected cells internally.
For lines this could work in the same way. (Just as a suggestion.)

(P.S. This is not a bug, but a feature wish. Corrected.)

Hi grsingleton

Nice idea, but this is just a workaround for a one or two page document. Using a
text frame for the continuous text is not a good idea. Just try following two
things with your document to see the problem:
- Fill the inner text frame until the page is full. Add more text. You frame
does expand. But the user expects is, that (as usual) a new page starts.
- Try to insert a manual page break. Guess you cannot - it's disabled.

So, for continuous text over multiple pages you solution doesn't work. Sorry.
Maybe you find a better one...

I can confirm that this works in OOo1.9.125 German (but in WinXP SP2). So I'll
close this issue.

P.S. Please do not make such a fuss like MASSIVE DEFECT and P1. There were/are
a lot of issus in OOo of this importance, they all got checked, not just the
ones crying Me first!. ;-)
So should you encounter this again, please open a new issue - with P3 (max.
P2!), I should think. Thanks anyway.

I will close this issue for following reasons:
- Multiple issues in one issue, especially with different priorities
- there are/were separate issues for them created
- two of them are obviously fixed.

So, since only one issue remains this collection issue becomes unnecessary.
Issue 54213 (= sub issue 3) remains open.

P.S. Please try to avoid things like MASSIVE DEFECT: and please check the
priotity levels next time: Even data loss is only P2.
(P1 would be if OOo formatted your harddisk or so, I guess. ;-) )

Indeed. Confirmed with OOo1.9.125 German on WinXP SP2. In my optinion

1.) there should be the possibility to edit an existing name. This should
automatically update all references. (Or can someone imagine a case where you
would want to edit an existing cell name and NOT update references?)

2.) if the user deleted the existing name a popup dialog should ask whether to
update references to point to the normal cell location (e.g. A5) instead, so
references stay intact even without the name.

3.) if the current name is dropped and an new one is added OOO should detect
that and ask if the references should get updated to the new one.
But: What if the user added more than one new name? Select one?

P.S. This is not a bug (things work as designed by the developers), but rather a
good idea for improvements.

Hi abdul

I don't see a big problem and I definitely don't see a P2 issue!
Some comments:
- Just adding some data and expecting OOo to find some suitable outlines doesn't
work. AutoOutline checks formulae, such as sums. Please have a look at the OOo
help (search for AutoOutline there). They have an example that shows what
AutoOutline is good for.
This explains why AutoOutline just removes the outlines in your case.
Important: You don't need to mark cells. AutoOutline works on the whole sheet!

- It would be quite problematic for the function to create outlines
automatically if the existing ones are not deleted before. (This would maybe
result in overlapping outlines. I'm not sure this is supported.)

- If you don't like what AutoOutline did you can just undo it. (Undo works!)

So all in all AutoOutline works as expected - I cannot see a bug. I guess you
just had wrong expectations on how it works.

There is certainly room for improvements though: Maybe AutoOutline could only
work within a selected range of cells and let the outlines outside this selected
area untouched, as you expected. You could open a new issue if you like this
idea (P4 and enhancement please).

But I will have to close this issue for now since the described effect is not a
bug but intended under the given circumstances. You can still comment on this
issue, even if it's closed - just in case you still have questions.

Confirmed with OOo1.9.125 on WinXP SP2. Takes about the same time for me.

The strange thing is that I cannot see anything special. It's just a not too
large number of simple sheets. Did you apply any special formatting or do you
have any other idea why exactly this document is so hard to load?

No, this doesn't look very good. Can you please create a small sample document

Thanks for your intense testing work. Now I can confirm the crash. The
interesting thing is that the way OOo Calc is opened is crucial for me:
a) When I directly open Calc from the start menu and do the next steps as
described I get the crash.
b) If however I open Writer, from there open a new spreadsheet document, then
close writer (so only Calc stays open) and then follow the steps there is NO
crash for me.
(Note: I don't have the quickstarter running.)

Anyway: The crash was there on my German OOo1.9.125 on WinXP SP2, so this issue
is confirmed. Also I will set the OS flag accordingly. Thanks for all your
detective work.

Hi Joe

I will close this issue for now, since if the problem is not reproducable, it is
almost impossible to find the source of it.
Should you come across the problem again or find out more (maybe after plaing
with xNumbers again) you can simply reopen the issue. (I admit that I don't know
what xNumbers actually is/are. Could it be related to this issue?)

Thanks anyway for trying to help.

Many user's have alread reported this (including me in issue 44668 and Colin in
issue 53688, both of which are closed):

At normal zoom (100%) and font size (12pt) the equation sign looks blurred and
the two bars are not of equal size (One is two pixels big and grey, the other
one 1 pixel and dark grey). Sometimes it's the other way round.

Is it possible to fix this?

Hi Colin,

To respond to your comments (tested with OOo1.9.m125 aka beta2 on WinXP SP2,
100% zoom level):

 (1) the horizontal bars of [ and ] are too thick.
Cannot confirm this. But note that sometimes one and the same formula is
rendered slightly different. Maybe this explains things.

 (2) the two bars of = are not of equal thickness.
Yes, this is true. However there was already an issue dealing with the worse
rendering quality compared with OOo1.1.x: issue 44668.
It's closed in the meantime but the equation sign problem you describe is not
fixed. We should open a new issue spoecific to this?

The bar over the A is not bold.
It is, at least for me with Zoom=100%

The bar over the first a does not cover the complete bracketed expression.
Bar is not the correct thing here. bar{} is supposed to work for one
character only. What you are probably looking for is overline{}, to be found
in the lower left corner of the same symbol dialog. I admit this is a bit
confusing.

The bar over the second a seems more ober the i subscript than the a
Maybe left [ {bar a} rsub {i j} right ] is what you are looking for in the
second case. Here the bar is over the a only, due to the brackets.

Fazit:
- I'ts a bit unlucky you put problems with so different solutions into this
one issue. I close this one as invalid and opened another one (issue 54182)
specifically for the equation sign issue.

- Please recheck with OOo1.9.m125. Should you still find some other rendering
problems, please create specific issues for each of them and include the zoom
level at which you find the rendering problems (At levels other than 100%
formulae tend to look more ugly). Thanks.

Hi Colin,

Funny, how did you get THIS toolbar?

Since I don't find an Insert table button either in my UI I wonder how your's
got there. It should be clear to all of us that inserting tables in formulae is
(at least as far as I know) not supported and such button does not belong there.

I could imagine that you maybe imported settings from an older OOo installation.
Is this the case? If so, please remove the OOo2.0 installation, reinstall it and
do NOT import the old OOo1.1.x settings. After that, do you still see this
button?

Hi naten,

can you find a way to definitely and repeatedly cause this crash. It is almost
impossible to fix bugs that occur just one time or just for one person. (Maybe
it would also help to get more information about your environment: what Linux +
window manager etc.)
How did you close the dialog? OK, Cancel or with the X button?
Thanks.

Hi vchoi

I cannot reproduce this. If I create and save a simple Calc file with OOo1.9.125
and close calc I can move the file or remove the USB stick, even if the
quickstarter is running.

- Does this error occur for you with 1.9.125 too?
- Are there any specific steps that you do in order to run into the problem?
What I did was: Open file on USB stick by double-clicking, doing trivial
changes, saving and closing Calc. Removing USB stick with the WinXP task bar
button. No problem.

Can someone else please check this too?

I cannot reproduce this either. OOo1.9.125 (German) on WinXP SP2.

@joeconner: Did you try a fresh install? Is there anything specific on your PC,
any exotic theming or so. Is this reproducible after a reboot?
Does this just occur on 1.9.125 or did you observe it with older versions
already?
This is very strange.

Hi redoffice,

I'm sorry but I don't understand your problem. I had a look at the cell
formatting dialog in my German version of OOo1.9.125 on WinXP SP2 and it looks
OK, including the different locale settings.

Maybe it would help if you attached a screenshot that shows the problem and/or
describe one specific example of what's wrong. Also, what locale (what language
version) are you working with?
What do you mean with The number of the text and the number of the number
can't
conversion to each other?

Confirmed on WinXP with OOo1.9.125.

Well spotted!!!
This is a font scaling problem: The effect occurs stronger the larger the font
size is. Try with size 60 and it becomes very prominent and really ugly.

This is only a cosmetical bug, but really nasty, so P4 should be appropriate?
I've not checked yet how a printout would look, btw.

(Maybe someone should do a throughout check for such issues that aries with
large font sizes?)

Hi rainer,

From your screenshot I can see that the matrix there was approx. 12 pt with
600%
zoom level because a 20 pt matix with 600% wouldn't fit on a usualy XGA screen.
But around 12 pt the brackets are indeed OK.

Please check once again with exactly below formula, inserted in Writer using
Insert-formula:
  size 60 {bold A = left[alignr matrix{5#6#5##6#7#1##5#1#-1}right]}
(P.S.: cjwhrw forgot the closing }.)

If you still don't see the problem, don't worry. Others will. ;-)
Thanks.

Hi is,
sorry to reassign this back to you: I'm just a QA volunteer with no experience
in OOo coding. So I can't change anything (e.g. insert scrollbars). I can just
check how it looks after some developers have done the code changes and there is
a public milestone available. (Or is this change already done in m122?)

Hi fst. You wrote:

as all other Spreadsheets I know set conditions for Conditional Formattings as
 absolute reference ...
I am sorry but I have to point out that I just checked with Excel 2000 and Excel
2003, and BOTH use RELATIVE references, that is, there is no reference to the
sheet if the reference points to the same sheet (e.g. =$B$2). Please check
that yourself.

... we are in line with the others.
If other programs do mistakes or have a bad handling I don't think I would like
to be in line with them. It was the goal of OOo to be better than other office
suites, not to just mimic their behaviour.
Besides that we are obviously NOT in line with Excel, as pointed out above.

It's up to the designer of the *sheet* not the Spreadsheet program to set
 the correct addressing
In principle yes, but the user really must have the possibility to decide. There
are currently no option buttons absolute and relative to choose from, nor is
there any obvious other hint how to decide between absolute and relative sheet
addressing.
To make it very clear: I do not believe the current situation is intuitive!

I reopen this issue for the last time now and I would like to hear the opinion
of other developers and users before it gets closed again. Thanks.

Matthias

OK, I reopen this issue as enhancement. So it should be clear that, even
though the addressing works as programmers might expect it to work, the
behaviour is not intuitive to the user and should be improved.

I strongly support the solution proposed by lamberete that no sheet
reference is included if the referenced cell is inside the sema sheet.

The workaround with the $ is nice, but I daresay most people won't have the
intuition to find this out by themselves. ;-)

Confirmed with OOO1.9.109 on a PC with WinXP SP2.

I think, absolute adressing is fine in principle, but when it points to the
sheet being copied it must be adjusted to point to its copy afterwards. - as
lamberete suggests.
