(I forgot som others pretty features) I propose that we : - use the actual script I have commited (fondu part is commented inside) for 2.0RC - create a new issue for fondu feature, with 2.0.1 target For me #i42998# is fixed : we have code to provide a built-in launcher, and this one works fine. I have created #i55022# for fondu, with target 2.0.1. We won't have time to fix it before. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. I'm thinking about a real native launcher that does not use applescript anymore, so it could be compiled as any other module, hopefully. but for 2.0 I see no solution except using VNC. regards stephan - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. To build remotely, you need to have the fast user switch enabled on the remote machine. IMHO this is not really a problem : you certainly can reach you machine one time (or someone with login and admin rights ) to enable this. Using VNC works too, but I cannot believe none has physical access to this machine. IMHO, this is not an issue ericb-ssa : Imagine an user installs a new font after OpenOffice.org2.0 installation. How can this font be available in OpenOffice.org2.0 ? We certainly will meet this case... My proposition : If your last attachment, already solves this case, I'm ok for include fondu in 2.0RC If not, fondu will be added in 2.0.1, completing #i55022#, or as soon as we have an answer. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. We will surely find users like me out there with fondu installed via these packagemanagement systems (in my case Darwinports) and only because fink maybe the widest spread packagemangement system and you yourself use it we include it? Or because of OOo available via fink? Should be only a matter of time to get OOo into Darwinports too. Or what's the reason for only including fink and excluding the other packagemanagement systems? And may I remember you that you yourself used pkgsrc not that long time ago? Would you have insisted to use pkgsrc fondu? Don't get me wrong but if we now take care of every possibility we have a 2.0 ready by the time when all other plattforms have a 2.0.1 or 2.5 or something out. If I would have the time and server capacity I would also provide regular Milestones but there is no use for it currently. So please don't show up here as the hero of Mac OS X OOo port. maveric-ericb: You're right we will get this case and we have to think about it. In conclusion and as a possible compromise we for now support fondu only for /usr/local/bin and perhaps fink and for 2.0.1 we think about a really good solution on the fondu problem and the arising problems on how to later add a font to OOo using fondu or whatever other method there is. For the more savvy user we can inlcude a readme on how to convert fonts using fondu on the terminal. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. So please don't show up here as the hero of Mac OS X OOo port. *sigh* if you want to please do it, it is up to you. My motivation is totally different. I had no real clear picture of this. About regular build: As written I have no time to do them. I need my Mac for work and for OOo and work has priority. About fondu: I can live with fink only but we should really think of a good solution when there is no hurry and we have more time for details. So 2.0.1 or 2.0.2 can be a good goal for finding a solution on how to integrate native fonts. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. But I don't see why this makes the current solution unusable for 2.0 ? Without the fondu support you will see no high quality fonts at all ! Just the few X11 fonts and Bitstream Vera, which is a really poor replacement for Times Roman, which it actually should be. Anyway, if the user installs new fonts they will not be availabe to OOo, regardless if we ship a simple fondu support or not. But if we ship it, users have at least the chance to get a lot of good fonts already available on their system. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Automatic font conversion is now only done if: - /usr/local/bin/fondu exists and - the user has write access to the the OOo installation folder This means, that no authentication dialog will be shown anymore. In other words the font conversion is only done if an administrator starts OOo the first time. I think this is a pretty conservative and less confusing approach. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=42998 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Wed Sep 21 05:20:59 -0700 2005 --- Hi, due to error reports when using the launcher whith multiple users on the same machine I modified the script in the following way: 1. The display variable is now read from the system, because it changes when multiple users run X11 at the same time (fast user switch). Up to now we always used :0.0. 2. Users without admin rights received errors when the script terminated. This was due to AppleScript trying to make variables persistent by writing them back to the script. I could eliminate all those variables. 3. The application type of the script is now changed to a stay open applet, which means the icon will not vanish directly after opening but will stay open as long as the OOo process is running. This can be changed back easily if you encounter problems. To achieve this, the script checks every 3 seconds if the process is still alive. 4. Fondu support: If fondu is found at /usr/local/bin/fondu the script will ask for administrator rights and will then use fondu to convert all system fonts for use by OOo. This will be done exactly once, because an indicator file is also written into OOo's font folder. If the user has private fonts in his home, they will not be acessible by OOo. But I think the other 99% should be happy... The only problem I currently see with this aproach is the missing UI (which I did not add because of the required localization). The user does not know why he has to provide a password and why the first start needs more time. Anyway, may be you want to give it a try. I'll attach my zipped desktop/macosx directory and a patch against m130. - Stephan - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. The connection between document types and icons is done in the Info.plist file inside of the launcher. So in fact the launcher will be registered as an Editor for all document types supported by OOo. Now we need two icon sets, one for the old file formats that were supported in OOo1.x and another set for the new Oasis file format of OOo2.0. Actually, the icons were already included in the sysui project, so all I had to do was creating .icns files from the existing PNGs and creating an Info.plist that puts everything together. I also added all other supported file types like doc, xls, ppt, etc. so those files can directly be opened with OOo from the finder via Open With. To see the icons in action, save some files in different formats and of different types. If the icons don't show up you probably have another default application registered to handle this file type. This can be changed in the 'Get Info' page or by removing the old handlers. Sometimes it can be required to restart the finder because old icons seem to be cached. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. I can talk to the lead of the installation project if there is an easy way to get those variables from the openoffice.lst file in instsetoo_native, so only one file has to be changed in future versions. Could someone verify that the packaging problems under 10.3 are gone when switching to tar instead of pkg, as maho suggested ? On 10.4 both methods work fine, but I think on 10.3 there were lots of processes started while packing, right ? Additionally, the whole method breaks the possibility of installing language packs, because the installation paths cannot be found anymore after moving files around in the OpenOffice.dmg. One last thing: shouldn't we try to include fondu in the launcher ? The missing fonts are big acceptance problem I guess. The only concern I have with an automatic conversion is the additional space we will silently occupy with converted font files. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. I vote for tar format and I propose to start an m130+macosx11 build for just one locale (to save time). But, because I'm prudent, and waiting to see it works, (changes can be made very quickly), I have commited Florian's create_OSX_dmg : at least a working solution is in place. The fact is we have not too much time to decide... Remember : the deadline to make macosx11 ready for QA is around tuesday. After, no RC for us. For language packs, you're right, they are actually problematic, not only for Mac OS X port. I'd suggest we open an issue targeted for 2.0.1 to solve this. Last, have fondu inside, is IMHO, a very good idea (Just don't forget to use Estsushi Kato patch for complex font) : since ages, Mac Users ask for the use of native fonts. With this, we're on the right way. One more time, have we still the time for 2.0 ? IMHO : 2.0.1 for fondu inclusion too. What I propose : - create_OSX_dmg is here by default, until we verify Maho's proposition using .tar is better. We just have time until tuesday. No problem for me to reverse the commits. - 2.0.1 time to find/think to a solution for language packs - 2.0.1 for fondu use implementation - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. IMHO : go for commit :-) About your new icons : the screenshot let me think they're very fine, really ! (Just be sure they're high resolution). They're close to the one I provided, but better. About 1.0 icons, the better is to ask Terry Teague. Waiting, I think we can test with old one as experimental, in non official builds I do, and ask on marketing mailing list (else, I have no idea...). Something I miss, is how other icons than main icon are used ? I probably misunderstood something, but I'm not sure all icons in the set are usefull. Another important point is that me have to define coherent names for these icons, and change Begin_ooo name, because this one is already used by Terry Teague in Start_OOo. As naming rule, I'd suggest something like ooo2-whatever.icns. The 2 is here to maybe prepare the next version. FYI, I'll add solenv, instsetoo_native and desktop modules in macosx11 cws. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=42998 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fri Sep 16 01:48:15 -0700 2005 --- Hi, Because I have the feeling that a simple AppleScript launcher (aka droplet) is sufficient and pretty easy to maintain and modify I would like to propose a solution that worked well for me: Using the 'osacompile' command you can convert a plain ascii applescript file into an application bundle including the droplet executable. This would allow for simple CVS operations with the script. I added a new folder to the desktop module that contains the applescript source file, the icons and a Info.plist which contains a list of supported document types (extensions, mimetypes, icon names). A corresponding makefile generates the bundle and copies the new Info.plist and icons to the proper locations inside. For simpler delivery to the solver the resulting bundle is tar'ed and has to be untar'ed by the packager. The build.lst and d.lst in desktop were modified, so that the droplet is built and delivered correctly. Finally, I modified fheckl's last packaging script to incorporate the new droplet. When talking to ause about this process, he mentioned that we should not use hard coded paths in the packaging script so I tried to pass some of the required information from the makefile.mk in instsetoo_native/util. A few things, however, are still missing. If maho's script is better suited to support all platforms I will of course adapt my solution to the changed script. The attachment conatins several files: - patches for desktop and instsetoo_native and the modified create_OSX_dmg which has to be placed in solenv/unxmacxp/bin - desktop.zip which has to be unzipped in the desktop module directory and will create the desktop/macosx/source/ folder structure where the applescript etc. lives. BTW: I named the launcher just OpenOffice.org.app which I thought might be an appropriate name... - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. (I haven't tested yet on Panther though) b. installer creates files at /Volumes/ directly and we cannot change this dir. Very problematic. o make fheckel's patch much more cleaner and robust. a. better use of hdutil. we no longer calculate the capacity needed. and we can create with one line command. fheckl: also ssa reported, and OOopener doesn't work for me. I think OOopner is not a good name, but OOoLauncher. at least we need `o' because we are talking about OpenOffice.org and not OpenOffice. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. ( Looks like I cannot open your project..) Now, another proposition, lighter than Florian's one : I don't know yet wich solution is the one we could use, but your script is just fully usable for the end. - build OOopener (or OpenOffice.org) in desktop - the best location - deliver the product in the solver - your script will do the package. Everything is in place now ! For the simple launcher I'd prefer, I'm actually testing a build in desktop. Before, I just need to understand : - how to produce a project non depending of the directory (probably an option to modify) - how to build the missing dropplet, else everything looks ok for the build. I certainly miss something important... Sorry, I'm not a champion with xcode. Location : as Tino explained me, everything is located in desktop, exactly in OpenOffice.org. This directory does contain OpenOffice.org.xcode Last but not least, If I understand correctly the doc, xcodebuild is the command line to use for build the launcher. The entire directory OpenOffice.org.app located in subdir build has to be delivered, and Florian's script completes. When we'll be arrived, I propose to test this for 1.1.5 ( the process will be approximatively the same for both ) - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Just the part for remapping is missing. I'm ok with your proposition of sending a keyboard event with a little part of code before xmodmap call. If ever Apple fixes this bug, of course we'll remove this part. Have you some code in mind ? Just Etsushi Kato reported me some secondary problems around remapping mod5, but it should be ok. He just was surprised to see his costomizations were modified. Maybe advice users we clear mod1 for mod5 ? 2) around the complete package : I'll have a look this week end, I cannot before. To build the launcher, xcodebuild can be used in commandline. :-) Theorically, just deliver and package is necessary after. As adviced by Tino, the supplementary code could be located in desktop (this has to be confirmed). Reminder : the launcher is a complete tree containing everything needed, it's a bundle This directory has the name OpenOffice.org2 (propose a better if you want), and must be located in /Applications/openoffice.org1.9.xxx , where xxx is the milestone. 3) The last part is the stuff containing icons, and some other necessary things, for what I'm still not exactly sure, because maybe the author and the licences have to be verified. Question : where find an official icons set ? I have icons, but from where are they coming ? 4) Missing : localizations strings - I'll ask on [EMAIL PROTECTED] and propose a process, so the people will just to provide me an archive containing the needed strings, else : en-US will just be default. Not sure if we missed something here. But, yes, I will come up with some solution that can be used from the scripts. One drawback still exists, however. What if people start X11 and then type soffice in an xterm window ? The mapping will not have occured if we call it exclusively from the AppleScript. So may be it should be moved into the soffice script. I'll give it a try. I have no idea where the icons are coming from, but I'm pretty sure you can use it. What strings have to be localized ? Where are they now ? Regarding the launcher: I know we should first try to have it in place and may be optimize it later, nevertheless, I have a few remarks. Currently the launcher just calls soffice, which opens an empty frame but doesn't load any application. So this should at least change to swriter. Additionally, I would like to have not only one icon, but one per application, so they can be launched directly. And, in the folder where the icon appears, all other OOo folders are still visible (program, help, share, etc.) Wouldn't it be cool to hide them all in a folder inside the launcher bundle ? Hmm, just a few ideas I set the target to 2.0, btw. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Mac Users *don't wan't* to use xterm. They already hate X11... (even if they don't know exactly why) The complete problem about mod1 is described in #i49752# The mapping will not have occured if we call it exclusively from the AppleScript. So may be it should be moved into the soffice script. I'll give it a try. This is more simple to add the xmodmap line in soffice script, right, but we still have to send the needed keyboard event before xmodmap is called. (I still wonder how you found it was the cause of our problems ! ) BTW, I have a suggestion : could a non visible command be executed in backend? Like xev or a shell script or whatever command like that ? About icons : right click on OpenOffice.org icon - choose display package content and you'll find them in Contents/Resources subdirectory. About localized strings : I'll attach english strings as example on the following issue : http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=42999 Reserved for this purpose. This is for the installer : default are english (en-US exactly) strings, but I already have de and fr too (Ill commit them too). Thes strings are used while the installation, when a problem occurs, to describe what is installed ...etc. About have more icons, I'm not sure that's really needed, and I really would prefer we have it for 2.0.1. For such behaviour, this time, I think a real Cocoa application would be a better choice. Can you please ask Florian ? (Just my packages are different : using Start_OOo + postinstall script ) I just have seen Eric's and Maho's builds are relocatable, and I'd strongly suggest *they're not*, at least until we have a complete installer, working correctly. Middle Mac User is able to install OOo in strange locations (using 'magic' folder names ... etc) and this always generates bugs. Second, what is still missing is an Applescript lauching the application with a dockable icon. Without this feature, OOo won't be used at all, believe me. FYI, if no solution is found, I have rewritten another equivalent to the one from Terry Teague I usually include in my builds, but it's still very buggy and not complete. Probably Florian's one is more advanced. Note that the applescript is not sufficient, we need to include icons, Info.plist files, localized files to make this work the same way. Last but not least, is to exactly define the command line process, and where/how put everything, which will automatically build this part in the build (or at the end, why not). If you have no clue about how things are organized, OpenOffice.org application is just a folder containing a tree, with inside everything needed. -icons -pre-compiled scripts -localizations infos -menus infos ... To know more, download attached archive, uncompress it, right click and chose See package content. For memory, what I was proposing for the final user is : download .dmg double-click on metapkg icon - start install [ ... ok for install process, fine for me...] Note : at the end we use a postinstall script with inside : open -a /Application/openoffice.org1.9.{version} - a window opens this folder, and a dockable icon called OpenOffice.org2 appears The user has just to dock it to start OOo - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. To my surprise there were over 100 instances of DiskManagementTool -uuid ---- running. I traced this to our build scripts which call PackageMaker from the command line. We build two packages and two meta-packages using the CLI to PackageMaker. 1-4 of these DiskManagementTool processes are left behind each time I run our build. After putting some debug statements in, it appears that there is no consistency to which calls to PackageMaker cause this behavior. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. --- this is same as our case for Panther. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. You now have to kill -9 the DiskManagementTool process after each call up of epm in the packing process before the next epm process starts. Example: You see this line in shell1: Success (Try 1): epm -f osx openoffice.org-core05 /Volumes/Daten/OpenOffice/680_m125/build/instsetoo_native/unxmacxp.pro/OpenOffice/listfile/de/epm_OpenOffice_gid_Module_Root_Files_5_unxmacxp_SRC680__de.lst -v 21 | You hear your hdd and the processor of your mac working for a while and than nothing happens the mac is even suspended to Disk or RAM. When you do a sudo killall DiskManagementTool or a kill -9 process number in a second shell window packing in shell1 continues. Any ideas about what is causing this call up of DiskManagementTool and/or more important why does this process stop the ongoing of the packing process? - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Attached you find the needed patches to create a Metpackage for Mac OS X. This metapackage includes all the 17 single packages that we currently have after the build under OS X has finished. Note: The patch also write protects the metapckage and changes the owner ship of the package to root. So you need to do sudo rm -rf if you want to delete the created metapackage. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
