[sc-issues] [Issue 51103] Conditional formatting no t working properly wuen duplicating a sheet
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=51103 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fri Jun 16 10:42:46 -0700 2006 --- Sorry to post here again, but in light of another issue (issue 66441), this issue has new relevance. Additional comments which may have bearing on this decision: -It is true that even in newer versions of Excel it is not possible to use a reference to another sheet in conditional formatting. (OOo is better in this respect.) -In Excel, despite the use of a hidden absolute reference, when the ENTIRE SHEET is duplicated the conditional formatting on the new sheet references the new sheet, rather than the original sheet (because of the previous point). -Therefore, an OOo user copying an ENTIRE SHEET and migrating from Excel would expect the conditional formatting on the new sheet to reference the new sheet, rather than the old sheet. (This would be a logical thing to have happen.) -By default, OOo Calc uses a complete absolute reference when inserting conditional formatting, including an absolutely referenced sheet name. Thus, to get a relative sheet name (thus enabling copy/paste of cell sections between sheets while preserving relative conditional formatting) a user must change each instance of the sheet name from absolute to relative by removing the $ sign manually. -In most other cases, Calc does not include the sheet name when inserting a cell reference, making copy/paste between sheets work as expected. -Because OOo automatically inserts an absolute sheet name into the conditional formatting even when referencing with the same sheet, it is tedious to go back and remove all these sheet name references in order to enable adequate copy/paste useability -Finally, and most importantly, use of relative sheet names in conditional formatting is currently broken (see issue 66441), therefore using relative sheet names in conditional formatting isn't currently an option for users. I would propose in light of issue 66441 that at least one of several things should happen: -(Enhancement) A use relative sheet name option could be added to the conditional formatting dialog. (Issue 66441 would have to be fixed as well for this to make a difference.) -Alternativly, the conditional formatting dialog could insert a relative sheet name (or no sheet name at all) by default unless a different sheet is referenced. (This would greatly simplify the copy/paste between sheets issue, but again, issue 66441 would have to be fixed as well.) -The help should explain about copying conditionally formatted cell blocks across sheets and that absolute references will need to be changed. (This would help users confused with existing funcionality.) -When copying an entire sheet, a dialog box could ask whether or not the user wants to change absolute references internal to the sheet from the old to the new sheet. Basically, it comes down to either having an intuitive user interface or else having a help file that explains why the interface isn't implemented in a way that many/most people find intuitive. Yes, they do not set the sheet name in front of the cell, but the reference itself *is* absolute as indicated by the '$' in front of the reference. Calc places the absolute Sheet reference in front of the absolute cell reference to give developers the freedom to decide how they will use their references. b) Yes, we are in line with Excel and the others ! We use absolute addressing in conditional formatting as the others do. And this has to be done in this way because a change would interfere with usability for Excel users migrating to Calc. c) There are no buttons, yes. But to decide about the addressing you only need to know what the '$' signs are about. And this is Basic knowledge for Spreadsheet designers. IMHO this Issue is invalid, but I will leave it open so others can comment on it. Frank - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. (2) Excel (at least my Excel97) doesn't set a sheetname. Using a reference to another sheet should use absolute sheetname as it is now. There OOo is better as Excel97, which forbits references to other sheets in conditinal formatting. Users, who use that, are likely advanced users and can handle relative/absolute addressing. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. OOo is much better in losts of thigs (for example, schema menubar at Writer). So we don't need to be exactly as MS was, we must be better. And I don't see the compatibility problem, if we think Excel doesn't use addressing in a propper way, we just can be carefull when converting an xls to an ods. 2.- I'm with regina, I've tried to remove sheet referece from conditional formatting in the example I sent, and re-duplicated the sheet. The new sheet (Sheet1_3) works as I expected. So the solution has two chapters; the first one is removing sheet reference from conditional formatting when not needed (the condition is inside the sheet), and the second one, paying attention to xls-ods and viceversa conversions. Hope this opinion I started will help to improve, and not to discuss. Antonio (or lamberete). - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. And as absolute addressing is sticky by default, the functionality works as expected. It's up to the designer of the *sheet* not the Spreadsheet program to set the correct addressing for the needs of the User of this particular document. I close this Issue again as invalid. Absolute references *have to be* sticky, that's why they are called *absolute* ! Frank - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. OK, it seems you are helping in programing this, and I have no doubt about what you say. But things are not black or white, we have lots of colors. So, you might keep the absolute reference, but when duplicating a sheet (lets say sheet_A to sheet_A2), you can also replace all the references (absolute or not) that contains sheet_A for sheet_A2. That way you still have absolute addressing, and you are duplicating a sheet in, what I think, and not only me, the correct way, I mean, duplicating also internal references. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. You wrote: as all other Spreadsheets I know set conditions for Conditional Formattings as absolute reference ... I am sorry but I have to point out that I just checked with Excel 2000 and Excel 2003, and BOTH use RELATIVE references, that is, there is no reference to the sheet if the reference points to the same sheet (e.g. =$B$2). Please check that yourself. ... we are in line with the others. If other programs do mistakes or have a bad handling I don't think I would like to be in line with them. It was the goal of OOo to be better than other office suites, not to just mimic their behaviour. Besides that we are obviously NOT in line with Excel, as pointed out above. It's up to the designer of the *sheet* not the Spreadsheet program to set the correct addressing In principle yes, but the user really must have the possibility to decide. There are currently no option buttons absolute and relative to choose from, nor is there any obvious other hint how to decide between absolute and relative sheet addressing. To make it very clear: I do not believe the current situation is intuitive! I reopen this issue for the last time now and I would like to hear the opinion of other developers and users before it gets closed again. Thanks. So it should be clear that, even though the addressing works as programmers might expect it to work, the behaviour is not intuitive to the user and should be improved. I strongly support the solution proposed by lamberete that no sheet reference is included if the referenced cell is inside the sema sheet. The workaround with the $ is nice, but I daresay most people won't have the intuition to find this out by themselves. ;-) - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Is just my opinion about how things should work, and it seems I'm not the only one (see matthiasbasler opinion). I still think that conditional formatting will keep working if no sheet reference is included if the referenced cell is inside the sema sheet as the cells) Well, thats all what I had to say.
