[Alsa-user] Kenwood USB device on Ubuntu Feisty
ALSA Users, I've come here to this list because my situation seems to be beyond the help of the Ubuntu Users list and my local Linux user's group. I've got a Kenwood USB audio device, which, to my amazement, was automatically detected and worked great with my first install of Ubuntu. That was about a year and a half ago and the Ubuntu version was Dapper. There was sometimes a little confusion between the motherboard's onboard sound card and the USB device. But Recently, a friend gave me an older computer, a decent Pentium 4 that I thought I would convert into a MythTV box. It would be great, I thought, to use my Kenwood USB audio and have full digital sound. But this time, when I installed Fiesty, things don't work very well. The Kenwood USB device seems to be detected. But there's just no sound. When I type in "alsamixer", it says: Card: Kenwood Audio Device Chip: USB Mixer View: [Playback] The PCM levels are unmuted, and maxed up to the top of the volume bars. But no matter what I do, I hear no sound. I've double checked the cables are plugged in. All other USB devices are working on this computer, and the Kenwood works on the original computer. But I don't get the login or logout music, nor do I get any sound when playing any audio or video files. I've checked out this web page for trouble shooting: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting And I've tried to follow its instructions. I wiped out and reinstalled the whole ALSA base drivers. I've checked that "modinfo soundcore" returns results. aplay -l lists the Kenwood audio device (*1). However, lspci -v seems to only list the motherboard's onboard audio (*2). Lastly, when I go to "Preferences->Sound Preferences", and I select "USB Audio" under "Sound Playback", I get this error: audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Resource busy or not available. I'm confused as to why this worked so smoothly before, and so poorly now. More importantly, is there anything else I can do to diagnose this problem and fix it? Thank you for any advice or help. [Alsa-user] ASUS Z70va line input problem
Howdy, all. I've been having a problem with audio on my Asus Z70Va (a.k.a. M6Va, a.k.a Chembook 2370Va) which has me pulling out what little hair I have left. Most of the audio is working, but one aspect of it is not. I'm running ALSA 1.0.13 on a 2.6.19 kernel. The ALSA modules are being loaded without any specific options (the codec modules doesn't appear to have a configuration for this particular model). The codec is indicated to be an ALC880. Audio output works fine, both through the internal speakers and to a headphone plugged into the case-side output jack. The built-in microphone works. It seems to pick up quite a bit of ambient noise (e.g. from the laptop fans) but that's only to be expected, I suppose. However, if I plug a standard line-level audio source into the side-panel input jack (which has a microphone icon printed by it), the input works very badly. The problem I see is an interesting one. In both the audio mix (if I unmute and turn up the "Line" mixer input) and in the capture input (if I set the capture-1 input to "line" and enable it at a reasonable level), I can get reasonable audio quality only if the input level, and the internal mixer settings are cranked far, far down. If I try to turn up the mixer to the point where the input signal ought to be getting an audio signal of more than a few percent of full-scale, things go all to heck. I hear a sharp static-like sound, which appears whenever the input signal exceeds a low level. If I do an audio capture, I see a reasonable-looking waveform at low levels, but if the waveform attempts to increase very far at all from the zero line it starts exhibiting sharp transients (they look a bit like the noise that dust on an LP record creates). This does not appear to be a simple matter of clipping... the waveform is not flat-topped. Quite the opposite - it's as if the waveform is spiking out of control when it tries to exceed a given level. The problem does not affect the built-in microphone... if I whistle at it when capturing from it, the whistle signal rises up cleanly above the background noise and does not exhibit any sort of spiky noise. The problem affects captures using both the native ALSA interfaces, and via the OSS compatibility layer... and as I said it also affects the input->mix->output path. It does not appear to be an artifact of ALSA sample- rate conversion - I've tried configuring ALSA to disable SRC for the applications I'm using, and configuring those applications to ask for the data at one of the codec's native rates... and the problem persists. I've tried experimenting with the codec module, loading it with a "model=z71v" parameter as suggested by an article I found via Google. This model specification greatly changes the number of mixer controls and inputs presented by the driver, but it appears to have no effect on the noise problem... I still get noise from this input. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Am I mistaken in my belief that this laptop model _should_ be capable of accepting a line-level input through the input jack if its input is properly configured? Do I need some other sort of model specification to the codec driver (perhaps one not yet actually supported) to configure this input correctly? My current suspects are two: [1] The codec driver is for some reason not configuring the "line" channel correctly - wrong data format, perhaps - and the incoming data is being misinterpreted whenever the codec sends in data samples which don't fit properly into an 8-bit value. [2] My laptop's line input is physically broken, somehow, and the signal is being corrupted in a strange way before it's ever digitized by the codec. Assistance or ideas would be greatly appreciated! I want to use this laptop for some ham-radio applications (PSK31 and etc.) and can't do so until I can get the sound-card input to work correctly. - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. [Alsa-user] No center out for OSS emulation
Hello all, briefly, everything works great if I do this: mplayer -ao alsa dvd://1 -channels 6 all audio channels work perfect. However, when I do this:mplayer -ao oss dvd://1 -channe ls 6I'm getting all channels (including LFE) except the center channel is outputting either the left or right front speakers (not sure which one). The center channel is not tied to the center speaker. The same issue exists on different distributions also xine has the same issue if I use OSS as the driver... which tells me it's an alsa emulation issue, not mplayer. I do notice that when I use the alsa driver (no emulation), the CPU utilization jumps up and I can't watchHDTV programming (which is why I care, btw) I have a sound blaster audigy 2 ZS with the emu10k1 drivers with a2.6.16.11 kernel. I only have the alsa drivers compiled with OSScompatibility (the depricated oss drivers are not enabled... nor should they be). Anyone had similar issues? Is there something in .asoundrc somewherethat might be screwy?Thanks,- Dave ___ Alsa-user mailing list Alsa-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/alsa-user
[Alsa-user] snd_1968 - Diamond MX400 and SPDIF output
All, First... I'm a newbie to the list... sorry if I'm not following proper protocol. I CAN be taught. I have a Diamond Multimedia Monster Sound MX400 soundcard. It runs great with the automatically chosen snd-es1968 driver. This is also the driver suggested on the ALSA Soundcard Matrix. The problem... This card has a coax/RCA SPDIF connector. I have used this for passing AC3/DD/DTS sound via Windows drivers... but am unable to figure out how to get Linux to recognize it exists. In my google research I've found references to "IEC958" settings for ALSA. It seems to be typical to see this within alsamixer. Unfortunately I am not seeing this in my alsa mixer!? It is probably not relevant, but I think it is interesting the driver is "es1968", but lspci shows it is a "es1978". Perhaps this was a slight variation of the chipset, to provide SPDIF support? Any help would be greatly appreciated. [Alsa-user] Alsaconf es18xx Mystery
Hello Alsa Users - I've discovered a strange situation on a machine I own. It's an old Compaq Presario 4505 that I received as a gift back in 98. It was running Win95 for a long time, but I finally decided to liberate it with Slackware 9.1 The machine was built with the ES1887 Plug and Play Audiodrive, an old ISAPnP legacy card that Alsa can operate via the snd-es18xx driver. The resources for the device are actually set in the BIOS, because as some of you may remember Microsoft wasn't able to completely force plug-and-play BIOS specifications on manufacturers where soundcards were concerned. I know some people will wonder why I'm bothering to work with this machine, but I like it and enjoy the challenge. The problem is this: The kernel (Slackware's standard 2.4.22) doesn't recognize the card when it boots. The command "insmod" fails. And "modprobe" says there's no such device. This happens no matter how carefully I specify the card options and parameters (which are in the BIOS, remember, and there are no resource conflicts). Now here's the mystery: I run alsaconf and tell it to probe for legacy ISAPnP cards (specifically the es18xx) using any available DMAs and IRQs and it fails. BUT when I check with lsmod the module is installed and it works correctly! All the dependencies are available except for the oss compatibility stuff, which I can install from there. My question is: What is alsaconf doing that makes it successful in spite of itself? And how can I reproduce it? I've been going over the alsaconf script and I just can't see the secret. Then again, I'm not especially good at reading shell scripts. I've searched Google and the archives and found occasional references to similar problems with the module, but no explicit solutions. Someone mentioned recompiling the libraries in one thread, but shouldn't a default kernel with a default alsa install be appropriately matched up? And after all, the card does end up working! This is the last little hassle remaining before this machine is 100%, so if anyone can figure out how alsaconf is installing my soundcard I will be eternally grateful. - Dave --- This SF.net email is sponsored by: The Robotic Monkeys at ThinkGeek For a limited time only, get FREE Ground shipping on all orders of $35 or more. I have also put my modprobe.conf (the 2.6 equivalent of modules.conf) at http://dle.ascendant.ca/modprobe.conf . Can you even find one? I'm a former Linux sysadmin, as well as a kernel programmer, and I have to admit that I find ALSA one of the most confusing aspects of the kernel/userland system on Linux. I think that everyone on the list can probably agree that the documentation is "suboptimal" to say the least. However, it's a free system. AFAICT, there are exactly two people (Takashi & Jaroslav) PAID to do all of the kernel stuff, all of the userland stuff etc. Everything else is based on volunteer effort, and as is always the case in OSS, most volunteers probably want to focus on getting their card/app working. That's why the wiki is such a valuable resource; it gives people an *easy* way to quickly add whatever knowledge/advice they've gained so that everyone can take advantage of it. Yes, it's a pain to search the wiki rather than have one official "Everything You Could Ever Need to Know About ALSA" document. But until someone steps up and creates such a document -- and I am thinking about doing something along those lines once I understand ALSA a little better -- it's the best we've got. > > For now, I am happy with just My G5 - Apple has a > revolutionary concept - > you control the surround sound settings with a bunch > of simple and easy to > use buttons and sliders Apple has about 5 hardware configurations they have to support, and that probably entails only 2 sound chipsets. Linux/ALSA supports scores of souncards on multiple hardware PLATFORMS. There is no comparison of the level of effort required to do what Apple does w/ the incredible amount of effort put in by the ALSA team. Also, notice how much more expensive your G5's are than a standard PC setup? You PAY for that ease of configuration/use. What did you pay for ALSA? Nothing. Certainly, ALSA could use a nice GUI tool which would handle common configuration of a few common cards/chipsets. But ALSA is complex partly because it is so flexible. ALSA supports simple stereo cards for MP3 playing, and expensive oodles-of-channel cards at cutting-edge low latencies for professional-level sound recording. I would not trade it for a 12-foot-pile of G5's. I don't mean to minimize anyone's frustration (believe me; I've been frustrated w/ ALSA for months myself -- look at some of my past posts if you doubt it). But rather than bitch at two hard-working guys and an army of volunteers whose compensation for their ALSA work is certainly not commensurate w/ the volume and quality of the work which has been produced, try a) helping; b) providing constructive criticism or reasonable suggestions; c) PAYING someone to develop the features you need, or d) choosing to use something else, quietly, and LEAVE US ALONE. [Alsa-user] PLEASE! Working configuration for Audiophile 2496
This is a heartfelt request for anyone who has successfully used Alsa 0.9.6 w/ an M-Audio Audiophile card under either kernel 2.4.21 or 2.6.0-test*, built as modules. /etc/modules.conf, .asoundrc, and any scripts to load whatever config files need to be loaded, plus some indication of how to use envy24control/arecord successfully w/ the card. I have seen several people like myself ask questions about this on the list and get NO REPLY, even w/ detailed config info and error messages. The wiki hasn't been very helpful, and I've managed to eliminate a couple of my errors through doggedly browsing the source ("oh, I can't play regular 16bit WAV files because the card only supports S32LE sample rate in alsa-kernel/pci/ice1712.c ..."). Now w/ 'arecord -D hw:1,0 ..." I get "can't get channel count" even if I pass in a number of channels w/ -c. I built this dual Athlon machine and aquired this card specifically to do digital audio recording, and after 2 months I'm not any closer to this goal. If someone could take the time to thouroughly explain this stuff to me I'd be HAPPY to write a set of incredibly user-friendly and COMPREHENSIVE end-user documentation. [Alsa-user] 2 cards, no working configs (ICH & ICE1712 & ALSA 0.9.5)
This is my second post regarding this, so I figured a new thread was in order. I have a Gigabyte GA-7DPX-DW+ mobo (dual Athlon MP) w/ onboard intel8x0 sound. It worked fine w/ ALSA 0.9.0 and kernel 2.4.20 (no ll or preempt patches). I just added a M-Audio Delta Audiophile 2496 card, and upgraded to kernel 2.4.21 w/ low-latency and preempt patches. Now, neither the snd-intel8x0 or snd-ice1712 modules work. If I load just the Intel module & snd-pcm-oss, I get no errors until I try to play a sound. Sound through OSS just doesn't occur, and 'aplay ' gives the error message "aplay: set_params:787: Broken configuration for this PCM: no configurations available." If I load just the ice-1712 module and snd-pcm-oss, starting up gnome causes an error message to pop up which says "Mixer device /dev/mixer has neither volume nor PCM channels." At this point, I have not a clue whether: a) 0.9.5 is a buggy release for these two drivers; b) using two cards in the same box doesn't work unless you use the "multi" style config (where the cards are 'bonded' into one); c) I have a problem w/ my configuration, or; d) the kernel + patches are the problem My .asoundrc looks like: pcm.intel { type hw # Kernel PCM card 0 # Card name or number device 0 # Device number (default 0) } pcm.ice { type hw # Kernel PCM card 1 # Card name or number device 1 # Device number (default 0) } ctl.intel { type hw card 0 } ctl.ice { type hw card 1 } And my modules.conf section for sound looks like this: alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0 alias snd-card-1 snd-ice1712 options snd major=116 cards_limit=2 ## OSS/Free portion alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0 alias sound-slot-1 snd-card-1 ## ## OSS/Free portion - card #1 alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss # OSS/Free portion - card #2 alias sound-service-1-0 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-1-1 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-1-3 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-service-1-8 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-1-12 snd-pcm-oss alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss Also, I noticed that despite aliasing snd-card-0 to a specific module, which ever card gets loaded first is listed as 0 in /proc/asound/cards. Don't know if that makes any difference. I built this machine in large part to build a digital audio workstation. Any help would be greatly appreciated. [Alsa-user] Completely Removing ALSA?
Well, my attempts at using ALSA have spiraled down and down. At this point when I make/make install the drivers the snd.o module always has dependency issues (See my last post: Module Problem - insmod snd.o failed). So my question is this: How do I completely (as in everything) undo what ALSA has done to my system? (make uninstall doesn't seem to do the trick) Any help would be great. [Alsa-user] Q: RME 9652 no sound in or out
I'm having problems getting sound into or out of my RME 9652. For input, I'm connecting the toslink output of a DAT deck to the ADAT1 input of the RME. When I do arecord -f DAT this.wav, I get nothing but zeroes. For input, I'm connecting the toslink output the RME's ADAT1 to the digital input of an Adcom preamp. When I connect the DAT deck optical out to the Adcom preamp digital in, I get beautiful music. But when I run aplay knowngood.wav, I get no sound. I have tested the toslink cables, the digital output of the DAT deck, and the digital input of the Adcom preamp, and all work fine. When I'm connecting the cables, I notice that there is laser light coming out of the cable connected to the RME's ADAT1 output. I am using the CVS version of ALSA checked out Wednesday, May 1, 2002. I'm appending the following information in case it helps: . output of uname -a . output of cat /proc/interrupts . output of cat /proc/devices . output of cat /proc/asound/cards . output of cat /proc/asound/card0/rme9652 . output of lsmod before and after modprobe snd-rme9652 . error messages from alsaconf . output of amixer -d controls . output of aplay -L . output of aplay -v yes__ive_seen_all_good_people__your_move.wav . output of arecord -v -f dat this.wav . error seen in /var/log/messages I have scoured the FAQ, Usenet, and the web for solutions to this, but I haven't found anything yet. Since every third FAQ says that ALSA comes with the mixers muted, that was the first thing I tried, but it appears that the RME doesn't even have a mixer, and so there is no muting or unmuting to do. The alsaconf program returns a ton of errors, and saves a file of zero length (whether I have the sound modules loaded or not). Can anyone point me to the appropriate document? Is there any other debugging information I can provide? I have a test sequence I use to determine the playback efficiency of any software sequencer. The sequence was composed on Voyetra's Sequencer Plus Gold, it includes many very fast passages with near-simultaneous note-ons, sustain pedal events, and tempo changes. The piece will play perfectly in Sequencer Plus (naturally), even under DOSemu (!), and will do almost as well played by MusE when routed to my external synth (a Yamaha TX802). However, the EMU10K1 synth stalls on the "thick" passages, and I have been told that this is a hardware problem. Since I don't use Windows I can't verify the assertion, but has anyone else noticed similar behavior with the SBLive running on another OS besides Linux ? [Alsa-user] Error when compiling ALSA (2.4.17 on 8KHA+ mb)
First, here's my system: Epox 8KHA+ motherboard (the audio support is by a VIA VT8233) Athlon 1700+ (not overclocked) 256 MB Crucial non-ECC memory SuSE Linux 6.3 (but upgraded to kernel 2.4.17) This is a recently upgraded SuSE Linux box system. As there's apparently no support in the kernel for the VT8233 yet, I've been trying to get ALSA (0.5.12a) to build. First, I run configure in the ALSA driver directory, then do "make". When it tries to compile sound_oss.c, I see the following: sound_oss.c:27: #error "Enable the OSS soundcore multiplexer (CONFIG_SOUND) in the kernel." But I turned on sound support when I built my kernel: CONFIG_SOUND=y and CONFIG_SOUND_OSS=y in my .config file (though I have not selected any particular driver). Can anyone give me any insight as to why this is happening, and what I can do to fix it? I've tried using kernel 2.4.14 as well, but with the same results. Thanks in advance. -Dave Schreiber [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ Alsa-user mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/alsa-user

Have you tried playing a wave file with the native ALSA util, aplay? Make sure you use alsamixer to both UNMUTE and raise the volumes of the necessary channels (usually pcm and master) can you show me the specifis of /dev/dsp. (do an ls -l /dev/dsp, or /dev/sound/dsp. ) I assume you box is devfs from your message. [Alsa-user] Little known features and help docs for users on devfs systems
I managed to solve my own problem with my previous issues with ALSA on devfs. I'm going to share them in case people have the same issues. (and they will on devfs) In /etc/init.d/alsasound (the alsa startup/shutdown script) there is a small section that allows a user to have a little script run on startup to take care of any issues that would always need to be done for whatever reason. The snippet of code is # run card-dependent scripts for i in $drivers; do t=`echo $i | sed -e 's/snd-card-\(.*\)/\1/'` if [ -x $alsascrdir/$t ]; then $alsascrdir/$t fi done $drivers in the script represents the snd-card-* lines in /etc/modules.conf in my case it comes back with "snd-card-emu10k1" $t from above is then equivalent to "emu10k1" What it does is look for a file in /etc/alsa.d that is executable that is the name of the DRIVER used for your card. So on my box I use a SoundBlaster live. The module is snd-card-emu10k1. This script is looking for a file called "emu10k1". If it finds it it will run it when the alsasound script is called with the "start" argument. (redhat/mdk sysVinit style systems.) Others may use a different script, check your systems. In that file I put in three simple lines: modprobe snd-pcm-oss modprobe snd-mixer-oss modprobe snd-seq-oss make sure the file (emu10k1 in my case) is executable (chmod +x emu10k1) and its located in the /etc/alsa.d/ or in the place defined by the alsascrdir variable in the alsasound script. My script defines it as: alsascrdir=/etc/alsa.d This takes care of getting OSS compat loaded every time alsa starts. If you are NOT using devfs, then you can just reset the permissions of the audio devices by hand with chmod/chown. (or use the ./snddevices script in the alsa-driver source to do it for you) Now permissions of OSS modules on devfs systems, is taken care of in /etc/devfsd.conf There's two ways to do it, one is the Mandrake (and probably other vendors ways) # Vendor way REGISTER sound/.*EXECUTE /sbin/pam_console_apply This requires reading the man page for pam_console_apply ahnd making the necessary adjustments to the files referenced in the man page. Or the simpler (yet potentially less secure way) REGISTERsound/.*PERMISSIONS root.audio 660 USER.GROUP MODE (rw,rw,no-access) Make sure the user account that you run OSS audio apps is either root, or in the audio group. (you could use any group name if you want) I've found the second way easier to use and simpler for my usage situation, you may have reasons to NOT do it this way. The last is ALSA permissions. These are controlled from modules.conf as paramaters to the snd module as below. The only thing I don't like is you have to specify the uid/gid as NUMERIC, not string based. (Thus I have to use 81 instead of "audio") Notes to developers: Is it too hard to make it accept the string equivalent, since I doubt gid 81 is the audio group on all the various linux distributions. options snd snd_major=116 \ snd_cards_limit=1 \ snd_device_mode=0660 \ snd_device_gid=81 \ snd_device_uid=0 This makes all the /proc/asound/dev nodes owned by root.audio (audio is gid 81 on my box) at mode 660 (rw,rw,no access) Hopefully this info will help new and seasoned users... = Dave J. [Alsa-user] GUI for ALSA 0.9.0 beta10a redux
Greetings: I read the recent posts regarding a GUI for alsamixer and I downloaded, built, and installed gamix as suggested. It's pretty neat, I like the overall design, but it is very flaky and segfaults often. I don't mind using alsamixer itself in an xterm, but I would like to have more control over what's displayed (I have an SBLive, along with its 10,000 parameters ;). Anyone know of any other worthy mixer project that works with beta10a ? Also, I would like to congratulate the ALSA team once more: zipper noise and static starts are *gone*. With 0.5.12 I would still get noise in XMMS when I started an MP3, and XMCD made a particular nasty noise when I'd start playing a CD. The sound now is excellent, I'm very impressed.
