[AMRadio] My Gates BC-1T Project
Here are some photos of my new Gates BC-1T project. As you can tell, the inside of the shack is not finished, nor am I done working on the conversion of the transmitter to the ham bands, however it is coming along. It is very difficult for me to get photos of the entire transmitter at once since it's not on a dolly yet, and I can not turn it enough to get the front square on, etc. The Meter sub-panel and the right access panel are removed to allow access to the guts right now. The wide angle lens I was using sort of distorted some of the edges as if they are bowed out. We (my wife included) have worked hard with brushes, vacuum cleaner, Simple Green, Windex, and a lot of patience to get it where it is now. I still have some to do to get the inside pristine. It really was maintained very well by the station engineer at KVOC in Casper, WY, so it was mainly surface dust we had to remove. I'm pretty proud of how it is has come out at this point. None of the 833's are installed, nor are any of the rest of the tubes, for that matter. They will go in last. Here is a raw listing of the images, all JPEGS and under about 100k each: http://w5ami.net/bc-1t/ Brian / wa5am PS: I'd really like some ideas on simple PTT circuits for this thing. I basically know what it takes to do it, however if anyone has simplified the remote control Gates specifies, I would really like to hear about it. Re: [AMRadio] of backward tilt
On 5/23/07, VJB <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Brian that's an orphan-looking transmitter if I ever saw one. Yes, many of the liftgate trucks I've rented over the years have the same problem with the backward tilt. One answer is to have some 2x4 stock handy to place just inward from the rear lip, so that the thing levels out as it reaches the ground. Yeah, this one had some real bad tilt Paul. Our problem was the fear of the transmitter tumbling off the back once it came out of the bed and onto the lift. The lift on this truck was probably 5 feet off the ground when it was in it's up position. I told the driver that most of the weight is at the bottom, but considering the bad tilt of the lift, I had no idea if it would make much difference. Bottom line is that it was a scary experience for me and the driver. Todd heard at Dayton my sickening story of trying to test the pair of Chinese 833A he passed along. One of them, the pins were way out of tolerance for spacing, and would not fit in ANY of the test sockets, even with the tightening screws all the way out. The best prospect among the sockets sort of started to go in, then, yes, I heard the sickening sound of vacuum reaching the outside world. Sucked big time. The seal broke. I think it's held onto the glass with mucilage anyway, but that was that on that. Never lit it up, obviously. The other one is good. Fortunately, these 833's have been in the transmitter, so they must have fit okay. They were removed just prior to shipping. Obviously, since the old dog is still sitting in my front yard covered with a tarp, I haven't installed these 833's yet ;) 73 Brian __ AMRadio mailing list List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Partner Website: http://www.amfone.net Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.

The manufacturing tolerances might not be held as close on the import tubes, but 833 cathode terminal sockets should be free-floating to cover expansion and contraction of the tube, so there's flexibility for a small difference of dimensions. Sorry to hear your transmitter didn't make it all the way inside your house, but at least it made it to the yard! Wrap a tarp over it and it will be fine until they can send a couple big guys out... In the meantime I have not been able to pet it or groom it any since my wife and I imediantly covered it with a large tarp and tied the bottom tight. [AMRadio] Relay K5 in BC-1T

He was pretty concerned about not telling me about it before, however I laughed and told him that if he had just now discovered the 4 833's were missing, I might not be laughing. He said it appeared to be bypassed, so I looked at the schematic I've got, which is a little hard for me to see since my close vision in not so good, plus the copy is not real clear. Appears to me that K5 heaters are energized by K1 and in turn K5 will close and allow (some) output of the LV power supplies. I suspect this is due to letting the filaments on some of the LV tubes to light prior to plate voltage being supplied to them, 30 seconds best I can tell. I''d like to get K5 if I can find a replacement, don't know the type yet, however it appears to be an octal plug-in. I've got other rigs that supply both LV and filament voltage as soon as they are turn on, however I wonder if anyone has some ideas of why I would really need K5 in the Gates, that is until I can find suitable replacement. [AMRadio] #4 wire from mains? - they gotta be kidding
I've been reading the Gates BC-1T manual and found two instances where they state that #4 wire should be used. One says: "3) ...provide #4 or larger primary wiring from entrance box to transmitter". The other is about carrier shift at 100% modulation: "9) Carrier shift: 3% or less between 0 and 100% modulation provided wire size in point 3 (above) is followed..". They have got to be kidding! Of course I know this is assuming possibly 24/7 commercial operation at the full KW, but still, #4 wire for a 1000 watt tx, PEP of 4000 watts w/100% modulation? What the heck am I missing here? My 200 amp mains (as the wire runs) to my shack junction box will be about 24 feet max, and then from the shack panel to the Gates will be no more than 12 feet. I plan to run #6 to the shack junction box from the 200 amp main, and then appropriate size to certain outlets in the shack. I will likely use #8 from the shack box through the wall to a 220 outlet for my Henry 3K Classic-X, and #6 to the Gates on separate circuits, but will NEVER have both of them going at the same time anyway. I suspect I will not use a wall outlet for the Gates and simply route the #6 wires directly to the primary terminals in the Gates, and use the panel breaker for emergency shutoff. Actually, for this short distance, mains to shack to rigs, I could probably get by with #8 so long as I don't run multiple KW rigs at one time ;) 73 Brian / wa5am -- Suburbia is where the developer bulldozes out the trees, then names the streets after them. - Bill Vaughan __ AMRadio mailing list List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Partner Website: http://www.amfone.net Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.

Will it go there without mods, other than re-tapping coils, etc." I changed out the fixed capacitors in the output circuit. Scaled them all down proportionally from 1230 kc to 160m, and reduced the number of active turns in the fixed coil. Whether or not you can just retune it depends on the original broadcast frequency. I suspect you could just retune it if the original frequency was at the top end of the BC band. Do you recall what values of fixed capacitance on C11 - C14 did the trick for 160? I'm also seriously wanting to allow it to go on 80 too, but that might require some sort of variable cap, or pop-in fixed caps in series with the others. If you were to dual band it, what would you do on the output section? Or would you even consider it ;) "What sort of drive do the drivers require from an external VFO, exciter?" I modified the oscillator unit in mine. Changed the xtal oscillator stage into a grounded grid VFO buffer. Grounded the control grid, disconnected the feedback capacitor from the cathode, and ran a coupling capacitor to a BNC connector on the back of the osc unit to feed the VFO output to the cathode of the 12BY7. It drives well with 50 ohms output from the VFO @ about 200-250 milliwatts. I removed the frequency adjust capacitors from the xtal oscillator, and mounted a variable capacitor with a real shaft for a knob in the place of one of the xtal frequency adjust trimmers, and used that capacitor to tune the resonant circuit between the 12BY7 stages from the front panel. Otherwise, you have to open the transmitter, remove the cover from the osc unit, and take an insulated tuning wand to adjust the slug tuned coil every time you change frequency. I had to remove about 1/3 of the turns from the slug tuned coil to make it resonate all across 160m. Same here Don, I wonder if L3 and C9 on the output of the osc would have enough range for 80 meters. Of course I can't forget the output of the driver stage either. Looks like I would have some concern with C15 and C7. C15 in particular since it's fixed. Was the plate choke on the finals (L9 I think) okay, or did you have to replace it with something else. I guess I could wait and see if it smokes ;) Ameritron and P. Dahl has some nice ones that will easily cover 160 and 80 meters. BTW, thanks to all who have responded with the very helpful info. I've got a folder growing in thickness with all the notes. I should be getting the transmitter next week or the week after. Scaled them all down proportionally from 1230 kc to 160m, and reduced the number of active turns in the fixed coil. Whether or not you can just retune it depends on the original broadcast frequency. I suspect you could just retune it if the original frequency was at the top end of the BC band. This one was up there around 1250 so I suspect I'll have to do similar to what you have for 160. I also plan to get it on 80 meters later down the road. I modified the oscillator unit in mine. That sounds GREAT. I ultimately want to use the Flex SDR-1000 as a low power VFO/Exciter and receiver. Of course the Flex can run up to 25 watts continuous duty, but I'd really like to get by with much less RF drive. Other mods: I modified the control circuit to run the relays on DC. The a.c. contactor relays sound like a chain saw running, and nothing I did would quieten them. Sounds like a good idea there too Also, I replaced the mod reactor with a potted unit. The original one talked back so badly that I could just barely crack the mic gain before it started accoustical feedback. That bothers me... maybe they are not all the same. Mod reactors are hard to find, especially potted, sealed ones. I do have a spare RCA reactor, 60hy @ 650ma, but it's open frame too. I modified the cooling fan circuit to run them at half voltage. They still run, and adequately cool, but make much less noise. Originally they sounded like a vacuum cleaner running. Basically, the transmitter was designed to be remotely controlled from the studio. With the noisy a.c. relays and fans, and loud mod reactor, it was totally unsuitable to be located anywhere in the same room as the operating position. Would the fan even be needed if you ran it at the 250 watt low power position? Likely not. This one also has solid state rectifiers, so no heat from down there. At the 1KW setting, I wonder if four large muffin fans somehow positioned to blow on each 833 would be adequate? I added CW capability to mine, but that's too long a story to tell here. Don't plan to do that. I'll use my Flex and Henry amp (if needed) for CW. Another change - I couldn't get enough grid drive for the 833A's in the final, even on the orginal broadcast frequency. For 160, I replaced the original final amp grid /driver plate coil with one of similar size, made from air core (miniductor) stock, and that brought up the grid drive about 40%. The original one is wound on a bakelite coil, using close spaced Litz wire. It's probably OK for the lower frequencies, but I suspect 160m is a little too high for Litz wire to operate efficien

[AMRadio] FS: Gates BC-1H at HamCom
There are two BC-1H's that will be available during HamCom in Plano this year. Both are working units, ready to go on 160 meters as is with simple re-tuning. I have already spoken for one of them. The other is missing only a panel meter, otherwise totally complete. I may have a source on a meter that will work. They must both be picked up and the transaction made at the same time due to time constraints of the seller. This is a one kilowatt rig using a pair of 833's modulated by a pair of 833's. Again, complete except for one panel meter. If you are interested, and going to HamCom, please contact me OFF-LIST for more details and price. Please do not wait until the last minute, as I need to contact the seller to confirm the sale(s). I can likely get some photos of the unit as well. Re: [AMRadio] Stuck Set Screw
Something you might try if all else fails, and before drilling, is Reverse Electrolysis. I have used this technique many times in the past for restoration of artifacts which were badly oxidized or rusted with great success. What you would need for a small knob is the following: 1) A small metal pan with sides high enough to immerse the knob in liquid. 2) Sodium Carbonate (sodium hydroxide works best, however may be too caustic for the knob and remove the finish). Sodium Carbonate aka "washing power" should do fine. 3) Water 4) Small auto battery charger w/short circuit protection. 3 to 10 amps Mix about 1/8 cup of the washing powder with a gallon of water and fill the pan enough to cover the knob, or at least the metal insert and set screw. Attach the positive (+) to the metal pan and the negative lead to the set screw. Be sure you don't reverse this, as it will actually rust the iron even more if you do! Also make sure the point where the connection is made with the metal insert does not touch the metal pan! Turn on the charger and you should see some bubbling action coming from the set screw. If not, you either don't have a good connection, or you need to add some more washing powder. Let it sit and work for a day or so, but keep an eye on the knob finish, as I'm not certain what it will do. The electrical charge should have no effect on the knob, but the washing powder might, over time. The process should break down and dissolve ALL rust, and free the set screw from the brass. Again, be sure the (+) is connected to the metal pan and the (-) is attached to the set screw! Not sure how you can get a connection to the set screw, but maybe an allen wrench stuck into it would serve as a good connector. [AMRadio] 833 Homebrew by W5TOP & N5DUP
I just got these photo's from my good friend Paul/N5DUP in West Texas. Soon to be on the air out there. With the help of Charles/W5TOP, Paul/N5DUP built this from misc. parts from an old Gates BC transmitter and other sources (one item from me). Appears to have link coupled output. A single 833 modulated by 810's. The mods can be seen in the lower section lit up. A Ranger is built right into the unit as a VFO/exciter. They built this and finished it about 5 years ago, then Paul got involved in some more important issues, so it's never been on the air. Paul just recently came back on the air and plans to get this beast on the air soon. http://w5ami.net/n5dup/833x810s-3.jpg http://w5ami.net/n5dup/Finished-2.jpg Just too cool! I have monitored their conversations a few times (little else to do, since I don't hear much, if any, AM in that part of the band) and heard them conspiring to send a massive number of complaints to Riley about the "deliberate interference" and "splatter" from the AM'ers. I have never heard anything from the FCC on this, but remember what happened when the "No-Traffic" net conspired to send in complaints about Ashtabula Bill on 7290 kc/s. On 4/3/07, Todd, KA1KAQ <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Well Jim, I appreciate your position and opinions in the matter, I'm just sorry you think that starting or moving to yet another board is the best recourse. I know there are some nitwits in the northeast and I'll say this again. I think the problem lies in the fact there are very few people in this area active on amfone.net. In the QSO forum, there is a lot of chit chat of "locals" who relate to one another because they know each other from local hamfests, QSO's on the air, etc. I think the real solution would be to somehow entice hams from the areas not covered so well currently on amfone.net to join up and become a "part of the family". Feeling like the "red headed step child" is not good regardless if it's one person or many. I think Todd has a real point about too many choose to use the internet instead of getting on the damned air! Not only has the internet hurt hamfests in a big way, I also think it has put a real damper on people actually wanting to fire up their rigs and actually talk! Maybe I should close down AMRadio for a few months and see what happens! I am as guilty as anyone, as I spend way too much time in front of a CRT, but it's also my job as a programmer. I will say this too; I am not a one mode man. Some of us think it's AM or nothing, and that's fine, but what I do have a problem with are a handful of AM'ers right here in my neck of the woods who chatter about me or someone else they "consider" an AM'er to be found somewhere talking on SSB. That is the sort of petty crap that that we can do without in ham radio. Also, there are a lot of folks out there who would love to operate AM, however they have been made to feel less than dirt because they tried operating with their rice box. I've heard it happen, and I don't like it. Are we AM'ers, or boatanchor operators? Seems there is this idea that if you operate AM, you have got to use something made before you were born. I have both old and new stuff myself, and I will operate AM with either. I think AM would be a lot more popular if we welcomed the use of appliance rigs along with everything else. Why not? Well, I'm getting off track here, but this whole thing has to do with attitude, and I think we should all think about what we say, don't say, and how we treat others in general. Just because there are a lot of rednecks and kooks on 75 meters does not mean we have to follow their antics. One last comment about the AM nets in the 3880 to 3890 region; I know some of you on this list belong to a couple of these nets. PLEASE zero beat your NCS and spread the word too!! Having a net on 3885 where folks are everywhere from 3881 to 3888 checking in, basically eliminates the possibility for others who wish to operate in that little window from doing so ...it's just good operating practice. w5ami __ AMRadio mailing list List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Partner Website: http://www.amfone.net Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.

It would appear there are 1 or 2 stations with others that follow on. The offenders apparently run a tremendous amount of power. They are also apparently unusually if not oddly committed, as they can be found there 365 days a year. Second of all, they have taken the belated courtesy of moving at least slightly off frequency (perhaps 1kHz) during the AMI net. At calmer moments they move off the frequency altogether. That should give you and other AM operators the opportunity to check in. It would be very welcome if you would operate AM on the AM calling frequency before they get started to remind them that they have moved in on a very active AM frequency, or suggest to them that they really are interfering. I am, however, afraid any attempt at the latter would only reinforce their intent. I understand 3870 has been a popular AM frequency for approximately 25 years, well before the SSB guys in TX took up their roost. I know they were not active when I first participated in AM fifteen years ago. In any event 3870 is currently identified by the ARRL as the West Coast AM call in frequency. It would be a pleasure to think they would be gentlemen enough to find a meeting place outside the AM window. Bill, I guess I don't get it. Yours is INTERNAL and already supplied AND matched to the meter. Life is GOOD! Makes it very simple. I guess I'm still concerned with the meter itself being in-line with just one leg of the feed-line causing an imbalance. Guess I just need to hook her up and see if I can detect any impedance changes on my LP-100. If not, I'll be good to go! [AMRadio] Thermocouple rf ammeter
Don, or anyone; I've got a NOS, still in the box Triplet 0-5 amp rf ammeter that I'd like to hook up. Using balanced feedline, I'm assuming I just hook it in series with one leg of the feedline. This would be AFTER the balanced link coupled tuner of course. Do; do you use two, one on each leg? I've been thinking about getting another one just like it for both legs, but I'm not so sure that's really necessary if your feedline, tuner, and antenna are truly balanced. One leg should read the same as the other ...in theory ;) Thanks, Brian / w5ami -- Suburbia is where the developer bulldozes out the trees, then names the streets after them. - Bill Vaughan __ AMRadio mailing list List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Partner Website: http://www.amfone.net Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.

[AMRadio] Ideas for Neg. Feedback on high power modulator
I'm looking for some ideas on a negative feedback circuit for my "Bartellsville KW" transmitter, as the one I installed does not seem to reduce distortion from the 7581A drivers to my liking. See: http://amfone.net/ECSound/BartlesvilleTX/mod_circuit.htm As you can see from the schematic, I am returning feedback from the plates of the 7581A's and not from the plate of one modulator. I think I need to pick audio off one of the mod plates. The mods (849 triodes) run about 3KV on the plates, and -150vdc bias on the grids. I'm looking for some starting values of series resistors (and wattage), DC blocking cap, etc. If anyone could get me on the right path, I would really appreciate it. The current schematic above is current, except that now I use a dedicated screen supply for the 7581A's. [AMRadio] Welcome to the New AMRadio List Server
Hopefully by now, ALL members are imported into the new database on the new server. PLEASE MAKE NOTE OF NEW ADDRESS FOR POSTING TO THE LIST: amradio@w5ami.net CHANGE YOUR ADDRESS BOOKS !!! Please do not post to the old QTH.NET amradio address, as it will be turned off soon. As another reminder, those who were setup in "digest" mode will need to access their personal "subscription page" using the link sent in the automated email send to you previously. Each member is assigned a temporary password (located near the bottom of that email) to access your personal page. Once logged into that page, you can set your digest mode option and other settings. We are sorry for the change, however with the heavy loss of members over the last week or so due to several ISP's rejecting mail from QTH.NET, we had no choice.
