[AMRadio] DX 60 mods

2010-07-02 Thread RICHARD GEORGE
It looks like most people say leave it stock. Maybe I will do that and save
the modulator for my home brew rig.
Listen to the am net on 75 last Wed night. What other nets or activity is
regularly on that can I get on from the left coast?

[AMRadio] DX 60 mods

2010-07-02 Thread RICHARD GEORGE
I have my DX 60 now working properly in a stock condition. It is a fairly
clean radio inside and out, but I'm not concerened about modifying it. I
would like to keep from drilling holes in the front panel but will if
necesarry. I have come across 3 different audio mods on the net. They are
the WC3K mod, KS3K mod, and the K4TLJ mod. In the groups opinon wich is the
best one to use?

Maybe it is none of the above and I should just go ahead and plate moulate
it. I do have a 35 watt plat modulator that I built some time ago and it
has a universal modulation transformer.
I plan on using a D104 mike, and have a National 300 for a recevier.

Thanks.

[AMRadio] (no subject)

2010-05-17 Thread RICHARD GEORGE
I'm in the process of building a 75 meter receiver and need a power
transformer. I can work around any filament arraingment but need a
secondary AC voltage around 175 volts at 100ma. A 350 vt center tap would be
ideal. I can run a full wave bridge or CT to end up with 250 VDC. Also a 90
volt ac transformer could be used as a doubler. What you got? Please reply
off list.

[AMRadio] Modulator question.

2010-05-07 Thread RICHARD GEORGE
I have over the years built several low power AM transmitters. I would like
to build something a little bigger say in the 400-500 watt plate modulated.
I have been kicking around the idea of using one of the solid state
amplifiers made for car audio driving a reverse connected audio transformer.
I have seen these audio output transformers available in the 200 watt range.
I understand that the RF output stage would have to be designed to fit the
impedence of the output transformer. Does this sound like it could be done?

I am conducting a survey that has only three simple but thought-provoking
questions:

Do you own a soldering iron?

Yes _x_ No ___

Do you own a roll of solder?

Yes x__ No ___

In the last 30 days, did you solder anything that was related to amateur
radio equipment?

Yes __x No ___

Thank you for taking this survey.

Results will be published after I finish soldering several connections to a
restored Viking II.

 Larry,
The 80 RPM records were made for the Edison players, which
used a real diamond stylus. They are ruined by playing on
a Victor or other player with a steel "needle".
One of my Edison records was recorded by Thomas himself,
a plea for War Bonds during WW1.
Please save the "thick" ones for a real Edison machine.

  Subject: Re: [AMRadio] copper sheet

I have found an interesting source of copper sheet, Carter lumber carries
copper flashing in widths of 10 and 12 inches, 20 feet long, It does have a
backing of asphaltic paper that can be removed easily by loosening the roll
and soaking in kerosene of diesel for a while, let it set for a day or too
if not in a hurry. great for tube connections, etc. I am actually going to
use it over the surface of a chassis. I have always wondered about the long
term effects of bolted connections to just the plain aluminum. It is not
cheap, $59 a roll for the 12 inch, but this is a lifetime supply and much
cheaper tan any other source I have found.

A second use is that it can be easily formed to ones head, be sure to shave
all the hair off first and apply the asphalt/ kero mix that was sloughed off
when you removed the paper backing, you did save it, didn't you? works
great for keeping out the govt EM signals to control the population and the
added copper in ones system keeps 117.5 % of disease away. The extra 17.5 %
is because the people near you catch something.

I have also been able to isolate the source/ sources of the low frequency
hum in my area after many years of study. as has been stated it seems to
emanate from everywhere, however that is not true when the scale is reduced
to only inches, It was observed that the hum is louder at night and during
the winter months. Using very large crystals, that I was able to grow, and
wrapped with the same copper, I found that hibernating wood chucks and to a
lesser extent ground squirrels are snoring and that is the source!

Pear reviewed documents will appear shortly on the internet regarding this
discovery. A side discovery with the large crystals suggests that when
placed in a particular pattern they can collect the energy of the universe.
This has been somewhat slowed by the complete disassociation of the
molecules in the crystals when approaching the " resonate" pattern. Research
continues on this work with Dr. Pear, a significant government stimulus is
expected shortly and upon receipt the program will be greatly expanded with
crystals remaining in central Ohio and others in Australia and Argentina.
  watch the skies! Bernie W8RPW

If you this this was long, talk ( try) to me on AM sometime!!

I would prefer full word lettering for electronics over individual letters

I can create my own decals on the computer but not in white.

[AMRadio] Gonset communicator

2009-06-03 Thread RICHARD GEORGE
Somewere out there someone has got Gonset communicator documentation. I have
used all the sourses I can find on the internet such as Bama, manual
suppliers, CD's, and what have you. I'm working on a six meter
communicator, It does not say one two or 3 on the front, but is an early
model that uses screw driver adjustments for all the tuning controls on the
front. I have 2 of these complete. Both appear to be pretty much the same
and use a subminature pencil tube that is refered to in some of the
docummentation but not in any of the schematics. It is a 6bg7 and appears to
be in the Squelch circuit, the area that is not working correctly. On the
schematics I have they show this being a 9002 tube.

Someone must have the correct docummentation for these as I own 2 of them
both being purchased in different parts of the country.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[AMRadio] ^ meter gonset

2009-05-12 Thread RICHARD GEORGE
I guess I was not real clear in my early request on docummemtation for a
Communicator 6 meter radio I'm working on.

I know how to use Bama, and how to download files. It is difficult at times
for me to do it as my MSN does't like to go there. I also have the viewers
required.

The problem is I need a schematic for a six meter gonset that is not the one
that is on the Bama site. I thought that there may be a Gonset guru out ther
that may know what I need that fits the model I have.

Thanks for all the replys.

[AMRadio] Gonset 6 meter radio

2009-05-12 Thread RICHARD GEORGE
I'm in the process of trying to bring back to life a Gonset Communicator. It
is the early one with only one xtal socket in the front I'm not sure if this
is what you call a communicator or a communicator one. It is the 6 meter 12
volt version. I have a schematic for a 6 volt version but find it different
in many areas. For instance the one I have uses a sub minature peanut tube
a 6BG7 and a 9T8 tube in the reciever. At first I thought the 9T8 tube was a
mistake but it may be used because of the filament voltage in series with
the 6BG7 tube. What I could use is a good copy of a schematic for my
version. I have tried BAMA but for some reason I can never down load
anything from that site. I do notice they have a six meter version listed
but not sure if this is the correct one.

Any body got one? I will pay costs.

Re: [AMRadio] [AM Radio] A special day today

2009-01-20 Thread George Brand
Had a Knight T-60 transmitter as a Novice. I had tapped the power supply for
some reason through the rear plug. When whatever that project was over,
rather than remove the wire, I cut them off.
Went to change coax and, as I leaned over and reached behind, I accidentally
keyed the transmitter as my wrist was across those @#$%^&* wires. I flew
across the shack on my swivel chair and hit the filing cabinets hard enough
to cause the drawers to open. My head and my wrist were quite sore for a few
days. I started removing wires like that immediately.

According to Wiki, the holiday did not start till 1986.

But an interesting story non the less.

I was first bit in a electronics shop class. I was checking out a
power supply I had built for a small 6L6 transmitter. Got bit by a
lytic when it was off. (oops did I forget a bleeder resister) I
cleverly reached in and got it again, thinking my first go around had
discharged the cap.

My classmates found it amusing.

You almost have it.. Putting a tobacco can on the sounder was a common

and receiving different messages at the same time. The sounders sounded
pretty much alike so some ops attached a piece of metal (a can lid perhaps)
to make theirs different. Older ops sneared at them and called them "lids"
ie:inferior op, sloppy op etc etc

  Keep cruising towards the Extra!!

Hey, George, I'd agree...'cept that I'm still learning the lingo
and I'm Not quite certain what a LID is. I suspect it means
something along the lines of "Loud, Ignorant Dummy (or Doofus)!" ??

In 1958 the test was not multiple guess!

There were essay questions, math questions (you had to do the math on the
test), and you had to draw diagrams.

True, the General test today covers more than the General test of 1973
when I took it for the second time. I took it originally in 1956 and the
content was about what is on today's test.

RE: [AMRadio] I'll vote for 7190

2008-11-24 Thread George Brand
Some folks forget this is a fraternity of like minded people. I'm still a
member of a club that has more than a few people that are greatly impressed
with their "superior" license classthe club is dying I wonder why?

The new club I'm in was made up of folks who believe in mentoring and
helping each other. I just stepped down as reigning old fogey to hand
the reins over to a younger generation having taught them the basics of
EMCOMM and they're going to plain take off...very satisfying and they've
already made changes, already planning for field day next year, the SET,
expandiing our digital reach. Our small rural county now has new operational
VHF gear in the EOC that works beyond our highest hopes. After the first
drill, last month, the County EM sat there in awe, looked at me and said,
"George, it's been a long ten years to get this set up, it works really
well, what do we need for HF?" He also made note we have enough trained ops
to pull this off instead of just two of us.

I'd use a stronger term but this is an open list. Those who ignore licensees
"lower" than themselves miss so much of the hobby. Some of the best MARS ops
are...TECHs! MARS is class blind, my son is a Novice class and would have
had the same full spectrum priviledges as I do had he stayed in and become a
full member. So ignore 'em and have fun...

BTW, some of the biggest LIDS are Extras

George is now decending from the soapbox......have a hankering for
some Ancient Modulation tonite.

With the cost of shipping so high today it would be nice if when someone
lists and item for sale they put were the item is located. Sometimes an
item for sale at $100.00 is a great buy but not if you will have to pay
$100.00 shipping.

Hey Rick
Put a 300 ohm resistor in series with the bottom leg of you parallel
resistors then probe across the 300 ohm there will be about 1/10 the voltage
therefore safer for you and the scope. 100 Watts into 3000 ohms would mean
about 547 volts RMS (about 1320 volts peak to peak) across the whole load
but only about 54 volts RMS (132 volts peak to peak) across the 300 ohm.

How does one test a modulator. I will soon have a modulator capable of
around 100 watts of audio. I know that I do not want to run the secondary of

the transformer unloaded. Would it be OK to make dummy load out of a bunch
of parallel connected 3 watt resistors, say about 60 watts worth at the dc
resistance I will be looking at (3000 ohms).
I know that this would only be good for short tests using my O scope and
audio gen. Any better ways.

I ran a lot of VHF AM back in the day, but only at 5 - 10 watt levels.

Yup, I headed to the local Radio store to have my Yeasu 2 meter rig looked
at (no TX). I found it it is a dead-duck, probably the processor, it will
make a nice paperweight...

ANYWAY...

I'm talking with the owner about the fact I was looking for an amp, prefer
tubes, mainly for use on 75M and maybe 10M... Around 600-700 watts...

He thinks a bit and then rotates to his right and points up on the top
shelf...

"It was left here for a repair about 1.5 years ago, I got it repaired, the
guy never picked it up... It is set-up for 75M and 40M.. Pair of 813's...
Everything checks good on it, itā€™s a nice amp..

You can get it off my damn shelf for $75..."

I couldn't reach for my wallet fast enough...

Now the fun part begins... Can anyone ID it, or maybe point to a handbook
that is may have come out of so I can get a schematic??

Here It Is:

http://riley-music.com/BowsStuff/AMP/02Front.JPG

http://riley-music.com/BowsStuff/AMP/04%20RightSide.JPG

http://riley-music.com/BowsStuff/AMP/10_813bChoke.JPG

http://riley-music.com/BowsStuff/AMP/11Interior.JPG

And Even though I have not fired it up yet, I did light off the filaments...
I think EVERY piece of tube gear should have a window...

http://riley-music.com/BowsStuff/AMP/12MagicInTheWindow.JPG

So, can anyone help me ID my score?!?!?

George,
It looks similar to the one here
 http:://members.aol.com/tcsopr/vkgmbx.htm

But the one I am offering has the swr meter built
in. The meter is mounted on the right hand upper
corner of the cabnet and the switch and calibrate pot
on the left upper corner. In order for the built in
bridge to function, it needs an external sensor, that
is missing. Of course, it will tune the antenna
without it using an external swr bridge.

important to use a very noisy buffer in front the oscillator to cancel
the hash inherent to the diodes. The second diode acts similar to a

Thats poppycock. Everyone knows if you reduce the output filtering, and
use an all band, coax fed, off-center Windom it will be possible to
transmit multi-band. If you have a 5 bands off the radiator that would,
effectively, give you 150% efficiency. 5 bands x 30% = 150%. Think of
the possibilities. Now who of then experts would dare say, "Theres no
free lunch". The numbers dont lie.

Brian Carling wrote:

Don't care what the numbers say...

Grin!

That 12AX7 linear amplifier sounds like more of a FUN project
than a useful station accessory! Just WAIT until the experts
start telling you it can't be done, you will only get 30%
efficiency and all that jazz! LOL.

Hi All,

I recently had a conversation with a ham in San

built a unique linear amplifier for his central

in parallel grounded grid. He said he could run 30
watts input (300v @ 100ma) with no problems, and about
20 watts out. I find it odd though that a 10a can do
10 watts with a single 6AG7, and 20 watts is only a
3db boost.

To my way of thinking, a linear amp needs to boost
your power at least 6 db (~1 'S' unit) to be worth the
trouble. For us AM'ers, going from 100 watts to 375
watts carrier does not meet the 6 db boost criteria,
and that explains why a good antenna on a DX-100 is
better than a average antenna on a Globe King 500.

Still, as I once posted last year, a dual 304TL
grounded grid linear seems to fit the bill as a 6 db
'brick' capable of 400 watts AM carrier output with
100 watts AM input, or said another way it takes 400
watts PEP and boosts it to 1600 watts PEP. There was
an old W6SAI construction project about this (single
304tl GG amp), and I recall that the setup in class C
could run 1 kw dc input with over 1 kw rf output
because of the low gain, and massive amount of
feedthrough power from the exciter that finds it's way
to the output. This was a way around the FCC power
rules of the day.

Late last year I built an AM transmitter consisting of a Hartley
oscillator
modulated by an AM modulator using only 6AX5GT full-wave rectifier tubes
as
the active devices. No solid-state magic, just simple full-wave
rectifiers.
The basic concept is that of the Heintz and Kaufman gridless Gammatron
circuits. The transmitter was set up for the broadcast band and works
fine.
It has been publicly demonstrated a couple times now and a write up
including the circuit was published in the February, 2006 issue of the
"Tube
Collector" magazine which is the bi-monthly magazine published by the
Tube
Collectors Association, Inc. It is fun to make full-wave rectifiers do
more
than just rectify.

I used to enjoy listening to big band music on 830 WCRN out of
Worcester/Framingham area but they went to an oldies format sometime
last year. I like oldies too, but it's hard to find 40s type music on
AM these days so I miss WCRN in that sense. At 50kw, they have a
potent signal up this way. You might give them a try too.

There was also a station over in NY that played big band music a few
years ago, but they got bought up by Disney and ended up playing
children's music and soundtracks from Disney movies. Think it was
WQEW? Up near the top of the dial.

It's always more enjoyable to hear some old music on AM broadcast
rather than more talk radio, but to me at least, there's nothing like
hearing some Glenn Miller or Tommy Dorsey tunes rumbling out of a big
old speaker with the receiver dials and tubes glowing away.

Thanks for passing this on, Larry - I'll have to fire up that SX-28A
in the front foyer that you were tuning around with in December - bet
it'll sound great, WABC always comes in here well. (o:

The Unique Call Lookup is even cooler. If you enter a call sign it
shows it year by year back 15 years
It lists previous holders and is cross referenced to the present
holders call. It is the best call sign lookup I've seen so far.
The page also has a database of all available calls. 1x2, 2x1, 2x2,
1x3, 2x3 etc. listed by call area and prefix or suffix. Shows when
the 2 year wait is up on unissued calls. You can even look up an
available call to see if and how many others have applied. The FCC
issues lottery style if more than one applicant.

1x3, 2x3 etc. listed by call area and prefix or suffix. Shows when

  Hi All,

I received one of these soldering irons for Christmas. I've long seen
the ads, and wondered if this device would be a useful addition to my ham

NIMH batteries handy. The device appears to have a graphite split tip such
that no current flows until something conductive is put into the gap. I
tried solder, and had to wiggle it around to make connection, and then yes
it did melt briefly until the blob fell out opening the current path. Next
step was to solder something. I tried to unsolder a wire from a PCB. I had
to change angle to get the connection, and the pad warmed, cooled, warmed,
cooled as I moved the iron to regain the connection. After about 30 seconds,
no more heat...just cold heat I guess. I looked at the tip, and plastic from
the tip mount had melted and filled the gap between the graphite elements.
The tip was shot!

Right now my Coleman soldering iron is in the trash can alongside my
Tornado fuel saver. %^$^%$*^&^%*$*$

Don't waste your money on this soldering iron...

Re: [AMRadio] Loop antenna feed question

2005-12-04 Thread George KB2Z

Getting up a bit higher would probably improve things.
To get on the air I've used setups worse than I care to talk about.
Anything works better than nothing.
Right now I'm using a dipole thats about 54' each side, fed with a pair of 80'
RG-59 coax cables to a 4:1 balun in the basement, with 3' of RG-58 to a tuner.
Ladder line is useless in my situation.
Its hanging off 30' of chain link fence top rail, swagged together,
run vertical, and bolted to a 4x4 post.
The 5100-b loads up anywhere from 80 to 10 meters. I have been told
it can't work. Go figger.

Good luck, George KB2Z

John,

I to am a novice at this stuff. I'm having trouble
visualizing your antenna. You said,

>"the fence - of about

Could you clarify this to me?

I too have a horizontal loop. Mine is about 15' off
the ground, and has about 240' of wire (roughly 4 X
60'). I feed it with 450 ohm ladder line to the
ground. My antenna is resonant at about 3.9 Mhz, and
the impedance at SWR minimum (1.5:1) is about 80 ohms.
I measure this right on the ground between the ladder
line and my DPDT knife switch (I ground it out when
not in use). I then use a 1:1 current balun, and
RG-8X coax to the shack.

My first try was to convert from 450 to 300 ohm tv
twin lead at the hole in the wall, and go straight to
a Johnson 275 matchbox with 300 ohm twin lead. This
was dismal since the Johnson matchbox doesn't seem to
have a wide tuning range to feed 80 ohms balanced. It
did work unbalanced however, but poorly. So I switched
to coax after a 1:1 balun for the run inside. If I do
it again, and intend to feed this antenna at
resonance, 75 ohm coax straight all the way might be
an option.

This loop loads up like a SOB, and absolutely NO RF
in the shack. The problem though is that my signal
reports are usually poor (often) to great (once in a
while). It seems that for this to work efficiently as
a low horizontal loop (high angle radiator) for short
skip, I need good soil conductivity, or counterpoise.

Stations beyond 500 miles can hardly copy me, and yet
I can sometimes be full scale at 150 to 200 miles out
early in the evening.

Jim

I had a good friend send me som Vero / Stripboard from the UK. Fabulous

For those that don't know, Vero board or Stripboard is perfboard with a
copper strip the entire length of each horizontal row of holes. Cuts are
made to break the horizontal strip with a special cutting tool, or a drill
bit just twisted a couple times by hand. Cuts would be made in the case of
an IC - take for example a 26-pin dip package. You would need to cut 8
traces by twisting the drill bit between the rows where the IC is to be
inserted. 8 traces, that is unless two lined up pins from the adjacent row
connect - 1 and 16, for example.

The board is easy to use, but does take some thought in regards to layout to
minimize the need to cut traces or use jumpers. Meccano, the same makers of
the Erector Set, offers this handy layout sheet for working with Stripboard.
See http://www.eleinmec.com/article.asp?11 and choose your format - word,
pdf, etc. for viewing.

If I order board myself, I get it from Rapid Electronics in the UK at
http://www.rapidelectronics.co.uk/rkmain.asp?PAGEID=80008.

I can't understand why this stuff never became popular in the US. Then
again, I can't understand why the majority of good electronics and computer
magazines are no longer published in the USA either.

Barrie, you can buy push pins specially made to fit tightly into those perf
board holes and then solder your connections and parts directly to the
stakes/pins. It is a popular way of anchoring things to perf board. I
prefer a metal chassis and terminal boards for larger tube stuff.

However, for BOARD type construction the BEST thing is called VERO BOARD.
It is hard to find in the USA though.

Tom,

I find the whole thing very funny.
I once bid $200,000 on a right handed guitar, advertised as belonging
to Jimmy Hendrix.

The winner bid $225,000.
I would like to sell my Tower in France. If that 40kW was fed into it, oh boy!
If the tower sells, my Bridge in Brooklyn should sell as well. With a
phasing arrangement you could load one side of the bridge and use the
other as a director facing west. Switch the phasing and have it
reflecting towards the tower in France. All kidding aside, When I was
a teenager my grandfather bought some property in Fla.. He had to
wait for a tide change to see it. After all these years I still think
thats very funny.

do have quite extensive documentation on most tubes made in the last 100 years.

So really there's probably no excuse for this question other than
laziness - what exactly are the 6146 characteristics that the
Valiant design "favors" over the other variants? A freind who has
re-built a lot of these rigs says to only use 'plain' ones. In my
ignorance, I bought a nice full set of 'W's and the transmitter
wouldn't even resonate on any band. ;{} I put three 'B' s in the
finals, and we're where we are now - OK on 20M and above, 'runs
away' below that.

What do y'all recommend for Valiant finals / modulator tubes?

On the HV B+ filter issue - mine are iffy, were replaced sometime
