[AMRadio] Member Count on AMRadio

2010-06-17 Thread W5AMI
Just FYI...

I have not mentioned the member count in some time for this list. We
currently have 485 members. During the Fall and Winter months the count
goes up significantly. Some members are very seasonal with the list...

Re: [AMRadio] sdr-iq

2010-02-10 Thread W5AMI
I've been thinking about getting the SDR-IQ, but I'd like to know more
about the other options our there if any of you have opinions. I'd
love to team it to my IC-746, but there is no IF output readily
available. I have seen something about using some connection to one
of the filter slots, but these new SSB rigs are not something I desire
to work on, or modify. I had the SDR-1000 once upon a time, but sold
it. I loved the sync. AM. Very good quality.

I mainly want this for signal analysis, however the Lowfer stuff
sounds interesting to me as well, and the SDR-IQ can go down well
below that even.

Joe, you might consider this mod for your Valiant:

Eliminates the need to get a BIG pot and takes all that current off

applies to the "T" as well. I haven't gotten to the point of
conversion yet, however from what I see, there is really not a lot to
it. 80 meters is a bit more involved, however it can be done with
ease. FT-243 crystals or a VFO like a Johnson 122 can be used with
very little modification to the capacitive divider network in the
oscillator. I've already ordered a bunch of crystals from Bry Carling
for 160 and 80 meters.

I'll post these files off the CD to my website soon if I can get
permission from Dave/QCU and a few others first, as I've got the space

[AMRadio] My Gates BC-1T Project

2007-06-10 Thread A.R.S. - W5AMI

Here are some photos of my new Gates BC-1T project. As you can tell,
the inside of the shack is not finished, nor am I done working on the
conversion of the transmitter to the ham bands, however it is coming
along. It is very difficult for me to get photos of the entire
transmitter at once since it's not on a dolly yet, and I can not turn
it enough to get the front square on, etc. The Meter sub-panel and
the right access panel are removed to allow access to the guts right
now. The wide angle lens I was using sort of distorted some of the
edges as if they are bowed out.

We (my wife included) have worked hard with brushes, vacuum cleaner,
Simple Green, Windex, and a lot of patience to get it where it is now.
I still have some to do to get the inside pristine. It really was
maintained very well by the station engineer at KVOC in Casper, WY, so
it was mainly surface dust we had to remove. I'm pretty proud of how
it is has come out at this point.

None of the 833's are installed, nor are any of the rest of the tubes,
for that matter. They will go in last.

Here is a raw listing of the images, all JPEGS and under about 100k each:

http://w5ami.net/bc-1t/

Brian / wa5am
PS: I'd really like some ideas on simple PTT circuits for this thing.
I basically know what it takes to do it, however if anyone has
simplified the remote control Gates specifies, I would really like to
hear about it. I'm going to run "rock bound" at first and try to use
my Flex SDR as an RX.

again. I was the manager of Amateur Electronic Supply in Orlando 1961 and
knew Leo very well. I've attached a large picture from my shack which is a
tribute to Leo. We talk every 6 months or so.

That's great Phil. Sorry the list software will not allow
attachments, however if you want to post a link where everyone can
just click on it, send the photo to me directly, and I'll post it on
my web space with a link for those interested. No problem at all...

Good to hear Leo is doing well. I miss talking to him on the phone,
but sort of lost contact with him around 2001 when I suddenly got
other priorities. I've got one of his old WRL USA maps they used to
give away to customers he personalized, and a real treasure to me.

levels out as it reaches the ground.

Yeah, this one had some real bad tilt Paul. Our problem was the fear
of the transmitter tumbling off the back once it came out of the bed
and onto the lift. The lift on this truck was probably 5 feet off the
ground when it was in it's up position. I told the driver that most
of the weight is at the bottom, but considering the bad tilt of the
lift, I had no idea if it would make much difference. Bottom line is
that it was a scary experience for me and the driver.

Todd heard at Dayton my sickening story of trying to
test the pair of Chinese 833A he passed along. One of
them, the pins were way out of tolerance for spacing,
and would not fit in ANY of the test sockets, even
with the tightening screws all the way out.

The best prospect among the sockets sort of started to
go in, then, yes, I heard the sickening sound of
vacuum reaching the outside world. Sucked big time.
The seal broke. I think it's held onto the glass with
mucilage anyway, but that was that on that. Never lit
it up, obviously. The other one is good.

Fortunately, these 833's have been in the transmitter, so they must
have fit okay. They were removed just prior to shipping. Obviously,
since the old dog is still sitting in my front yard covered with a
tarp, I haven't installed these 833's yet ;)

The manufacturing tolerances might not be held as close on the import tubes,
but 833 cathode terminal sockets should be free-floating to cover expansion
and contraction of the tube, so there's flexibility for a small difference of
dimensions.

Sorry to hear your transmitter didn't make it all the way inside your house,
but at least it made it to the yard! Wrap a tarp over it and it will be fine
until they can send a couple big guys out...

Thanks to ALL for the replies on the 833's! Good info...

The moving co. has seen the photo of the lonely transmitter sitting
outside and sent it to everyone in the company from what I heard. The
lady could not believe the driver left it like that. They contacted
me this afternoon and are sending some guys out to move it into my
building where the new ham shack is going to be. In the meantime I
have not been able to pet it or groom it any since my wife and I
imediantly covered it with a large tarp and tied the bottom tight.
With the bright blue tarp, I'm sure all the passer bys think it's a
porta potty at first glance.

would have been bad enough that the thing would have tumbled off the
rear end. Even though I just had a disc replacement in my neck, I had
to intervene and help this man, as I was afraid he was going to kill
himself. We unloaded it on the road and pulled it down my driveway
about 30 feet and left it. See: http://w5ami.net/07120001.JPG

Should I just count on replacing them and keep them for spares, or
maybe just decoration?

The Saturday Morning "Texoma AM Traders Net" has voted to change the

on conditions.

Primary net controller are (rotating as needed):

It's there to provide proper heating of the 866A MV rectifiers (if you

their plate supply. It is there to prevent flash-over and potential

[AMRadio] Relay K5 in BC-1T

2007-05-13 Thread A.R.S. - W5AMI

'he current owner of the BC-1T I'm getting discovered that the plug-in
reply K5 was missing. He was pretty concerned about not telling me
about it before, however I laughed and told him that if he had just
now discovered the 4 833's were missing, I might not be laughing.

He said it appeared to be bypassed, so I looked at the schematic I've
got, which is a little hard for me to see since my close vision in not
so good, plus the copy is not real clear. Appears to me that K5
heaters are energized by K1 and in turn K5 will close and allow (some)
output of the LV power supplies. I suspect this is due to letting the
filaments on some of the LV tubes to light prior to plate voltage
being supplied to them, 30 seconds best I can tell.

I''d like to get K5 if I can find a replacement, don't know the type
yet, however it appears to be an octal plug-in.

I've got other rigs that supply both LV and filament voltage as soon
as they are turn on, however I wonder if anyone has some ideas of why
I would really need K5 in the Gates, that is until I can find suitable
replacement.

Thanks,
Brian / wa5am

Sorry Paul, but I am really surprised by that statement! I know Win,
and your assessment is pretty much correct from what I understand,
however I think it's really harsh the way you put it, especially since
he is (or I know at one time was) a member of this forum, and lot of
his friends ARE members of this forum. I can only hope he does not
see your reply.

Being an admin of this forum, and "original" founder of amfone.net,
the first thing I wanted to do was delete your comment, however I've
decided that in situations such as this, Gary should intervene. Win
has been my friend for a long time, and I simply can not understand
why you would poke fun/criticize someone who is on his way to the
other side. If I felt this was some sort of screwing for potential
buyers, you can bet your damned money I would NOT have posted this to
amfone.net, or anywhere else.

I am not going to explain his health to everyone, and see no reason to
do so, as that is Win's business and that of his family. I offered to
list his items on amfone.net when I heard the news, and he agreed.

Healthfully Yours Paul!

I Love the Gates' manuals Larry. They are actually very good, however
somewhat simplistic and even humorous on certain things like one

brave"!

I think a lot of this was they wanted the users to be safe, rather
than sorry, or worse, dead. Some of it is written as if some
"appliance operator" would actually be doing the installation, setup,
and applying power to the tower.

Thanks for the thoughts!

[AMRadio] #4 wire from mains? - they gotta be kidding

2007-05-09 Thread A.R.S. - W5AMI

I've been reading the Gates BC-1T manual and found two instances where
they state that #4 wire should be used. One says:

"3) ...provide #4 or larger primary wiring from entrance box to transmitter".

The other is about carrier shift at 100% modulation:

"9) Carrier shift: 3% or less between 0 and 100% modulation provided
wire size in point 3 (above) is followed..".

They have got to be kidding! Of course I know this is assuming
possibly 24/7 commercial operation at the full KW, but still, #4 wire
for a 1000 watt tx, PEP of 4000 watts w/100% modulation?

What the heck am I missing here? My 200 amp mains (as the wire runs)
to my shack junction box will be about 24 feet max, and then from the
shack panel to the Gates will be no more than 12 feet. I plan to run
#6 to the shack junction box from the 200 amp main, and then
appropriate size to certain outlets in the shack. I will likely use
#8 from the shack box through the wall to a 220 outlet for my Henry 3K
Classic-X, and #6 to the Gates on separate circuits, but will NEVER
have both of them going at the same time anyway.

I suspect I will not use a wall outlet for the Gates and simply route
the #6 wires directly to the primary terminals in the Gates, and use
the panel breaker for emergency shutoff.

Actually, for this short distance, mains to shack to rigs, I could
probably get by with #8 so long as I don't run multiple KW rigs at one
time ;)

escalated, and Win/W5WM and myself did exactly that. I turned my

actually tried to reason with them for a while, but they pretended not
to hear me, but it was obvious they did since they couldn't even hear

That sounds like it, Craig. I have one in my T-3 spares, unfortunately

Yeah, that's it Craig. Todd don't go to any trouble. I'm just trying

rent the house out, so I really don't want to bother the tenant, but
what the heck. I know they are 3000+, but curious about the current
rating especially..

Because you can't post photos here Geoff, and I didn't see the need
for duplication. No one is forced to go anywhere they don't like, but
considering the wealth of information and great resources available on
amfone.net, it's hard to believe the average AMer (with no axe to
grind) wouldn't make use of the site. Especially considering its rich
history through Brian as a founder. It's available to all, and only as
good as the AM community makes it through their contribution of
material.

I Agree Todd, and no reason we need to hash this out again.
Amfone.net is a great resource and both have their intended purposes.
As I've said before, there are bad apples in just about every email
list and web based forums all over the net. BTW, you do not have to
be a member of the amfone.net forum to view the posts on there! If
you don't want to post, then so be it.

The ONLY thing I have a problem with are blind links; such as "...take
a look at this www.xyz123.com" without any mention of what the hell it
is

Anyway, thanks Todd for the info on the xfmrs. I just wish they
weren't so heavy for shipping. I've got a mod xfmr I'd love to have
redone for better freq. response, but no way I'd ship it.

Re: [AMRadio] Gates BC-1T

Don,

Embedded replies/more questions below:

On 5/6/07, D. Chester <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

"I'd also like to hear from anyone that has tuned it to 160. Will it go
there without mods, other than re-tapping coils, etc."

I changed out the fixed capacitors in the output circuit. Scaled them all
down proportionally from 1230 kc to 160m, and reduced the number of active
turns in the fixed coil. Whether or not you can just retune it depends on
the original broadcast frequency. I suspect you could just retune it if the
original frequency was at the top end of the BC band.

Do you recall what values of fixed capacitance on C11 - C14 did the
trick for 160? I'm also seriously wanting to allow it to go on 80
too, but that might require some sort of variable cap, or pop-in fixed
caps in series with the others. If you were to dual band it, what
would you do on the output section? Or would you even consider it
;)

"What sort of drive do the drivers require from an external VFO, exciter?"

I modified the oscillator unit in mine. Changed the xtal oscillator stage
into a grounded grid VFO buffer. Grounded the control grid, disconnected
the feedback capacitor from the cathode, and ran a coupling capacitor to a
BNC connector on the back of the osc unit to feed the VFO output to the
cathode of the 12BY7. It drives well with 50 ohms output from the VFO @
about 200-250 milliwatts.

I removed the frequency adjust capacitors from the xtal oscillator, and
mounted a variable capacitor with a real shaft for a knob in the place of
one of the xtal frequency adjust trimmers, and used that capacitor to tune
the resonant circuit between the 12BY7 stages from the front panel.
Otherwise, you have to open the transmitter, remove the cover from the osc
unit, and take an insulated tuning wand to adjust the slug tuned coil every
time you change frequency. I had to remove about 1/3 of the turns from the
slug tuned coil to make it resonate all across 160m.

Same here Don, I wonder if L3 and C9 on the output of the osc would
have enough range for 80 meters. Of course I can't forget the output
of the driver stage either. Looks like I would have some concern with
C15 and C7. C15 in particular since it's fixed.

Was the plate choke on the finals (L9 I think) okay, or did you have
to replace it with something else. I guess I could wait and see if it
smokes ;) Ameritron and P. Dahl has some nice ones that will easily
cover 160 and 80 meters.

BTW, thanks to all who have responded with the very helpful info.
I've got a folder growing in thickness with all the notes. I should
be getting the transmitter next week or the week after. Also, in case
anyone finds a large transmitter that is too far to drive for pickup,
there is a special service provided by North American Van Lines just
for this sort of thing. Email me directly, and I can put you in touch
with the right person. The price w/insurance will be a lot less than
what you might think. You don't have to do anything, nor does the
shipper. They take it from the seller, and bring it right into your
shack, or wherever you want it.

There is where you and I would have to disagree. I think the BC1-T has to
be the ugliest excuse for a broadcast transmitter ever made! The epitome of
its ugliness is that hump that pertrudes out, down at the bottom of the

the ridiculous little triangular shaped viewing window. If they had made it
adequate in size and rectangular in shape, you would actually be able to see

low power VFO/Exciter and receiver. Of course the Flex can run up to
25 watts continuous duty, but I'd really like to get by with much less
RF drive.

Other mods: I modified the control circuit to run the relays on DC. The
a.c. contactor relays sound like a chain saw running, and nothing I did
would quieten them.

Sounds like a good idea there too

Also, I replaced the mod reactor with a potted unit.

The original one talked back so badly that I could just barely crack the mic
gain before it started accoustical feedback.

That bothers me... maybe they are not all the same. Mod reactors are
hard to find, especially potted, sealed ones. I do have a spare RCA
reactor, 60hy @ 650ma, but it's open frame too.

I modified the cooling fan

circuit to run them at half voltage. They still run, and adequately cool,
but make much less noise. Originally they sounded like a vacuum cleaner
running. Basically, the transmitter was designed to be remotely controlled
from the studio. With the noisy a.c. relays and fans, and loud mod reactor,
it was totally unsuitable to be located anywhere in the same room as the
operating position.

Would the fan even be needed if you ran it at the 250 watt low power
position? Likely not. This one also has solid state rectifiers, so
no heat from down there. At the 1KW setting, I wonder if four large
muffin fans somehow positioned to blow on each 833 would be adequate?

I added CW capability to mine, but that's too long a story to tell here.

Don't plan to do that. I'll use my Flex and Henry amp (if needed) for CW.

Another change - I couldn't get enough grid drive for the 833A's in the
final, even on the orginal broadcast frequency. For 160, I replaced the
original final amp grid /driver plate coil with one of similar size, made
from air core (miniductor) stock, and that brought up the grid drive about
40%. The original one is wound on a bakelite coil, using close spaced Litz
wire. It's probably OK for the lower frequencies, but I suspect 160m is a
little too high for Litz wire to operate efficien

there without mods, other than re-tapping coils, etc. What sort of
drive do the drivers require from an external VFO, exciter?

[AMRadio] FS: Gates BC-1H at HamCom

2007-05-04 Thread A.R.S. - W5AMI

There are two BC-1H's that will be available during HamCom in Plano
this year. Both are working units, ready to go on 160 meters as is
with simple re-tuning. I have already spoken for one of them. The
other is missing only a panel meter, otherwise totally complete. I
may have a source on a meter that will work. They must both be picked
up and the transaction made at the same time due to time constraints
of the seller.

This is a one kilowatt rig using a pair of 833's modulated by a pair
of 833's. Again, complete except for one panel meter.

If you are interested, and going to HamCom, please contact me OFF-LIST
for more details and price. Please do not wait until the last minute,
as I need to contact the seller to confirm the sale(s). I can likely
get some photos of the unit as well.

Email me direct off the list at ars.w5ami "at" gmail.com. Change the
"at" with a @ of course.

BTW Rick, if you do try this and decide to use Lye (sodium hydroxide),
be real careful with that stuff man! I'm sure you probably already
know this, however I thought I should include my warning. Strong
alkali loves human skin and flesh, and it will literally melt it away
if concentrated. When I use it, I only use a small amount, and add as
I deem necessary. You can put your hands in it to remove things so
long as it's dilute and you wash your hands right away under lots of
pure water until the "slick" feeling is gone, but NEVER put your hands
in concentrated sodium (or potassium) hydroxide!!! In it's own way,
it is just as bad as strong acid.

Re: [AMRadio] Stuck Set Screw

2007-04-26 Thread A.R.S. - W5AMI

Something you might try if all else fails, and before drilling, is
Reverse Electrolysis. I have used this technique many times in the
past for restoration of artifacts which were badly oxidized or rusted
with great success. What you would need for a small knob is the
following:

1) A small metal pan with sides high enough to immerse the knob in liquid.

2) Sodium Carbonate (sodium hydroxide works best, however may be too
caustic for the knob and remove the finish). Sodium Carbonate aka
"washing power" should do fine.

3) Water

4) Small auto battery charger w/short circuit protection. 3 to 10 amps

Mix about 1/8 cup of the washing powder with a gallon of water and
fill the pan enough to cover the knob, or at least the metal insert
and set screw.

Attach the positive (+) to the metal pan and the negative lead to the
set screw. Be sure you don't reverse this, as it will actually rust
the iron even more if you do! Also make sure the point where the
connection is made with the metal insert does not touch the metal pan!

Turn on the charger and you should see some bubbling action coming
from the set screw. If not, you either don't have a good connection,
or you need to add some more washing powder.

Let it sit and work for a day or so, but keep an eye on the knob
finish, as I'm not certain what it will do. The electrical charge
should have no effect on the knob, but the washing powder might, over
time.

The process should break down and dissolve ALL rust, and free the set
screw from the brass.

Again, be sure the (+) is connected to the metal pan and the (-) is
attached to the set screw! Not sure how you can get a connection to
the set screw, but maybe an allen wrench stuck into it would serve as
a good connector.

[AMRadio] the post about amfone.net post last week...

2007-04-18 Thread A.R.S. - W5AMI

Now I can see some light on why Jim posted his message last week. I
wanted nothing more than to try and be fair, and not take sides on
this list, however after seeing this thread today, I had to react. My
post is on page three of this thread, and the basic gist of my post is
about the way some want to attempt to mimic the accents of us in the
south, and call us "moron landers". Granted, the thread is about
"slopbucket operators", but to globally call those of us in the area
of Texarkana "moron landers" just takes the cake with me.

See the thread here:
http://amfone.net/Amforum/index.php?topic=10844.40

Making fun of people's accent or dialect on ham radio is inexcusable.
This is not just an SSB operator thing. We in the south know we sound
different than you in the north, but it has nothing to do with our IQ
or ability to perform the same daily things those up in the north do.
You guys sound different to us too...

Call Henry Radio - 800 877-7979, as they still have a lot of parts

could answer your question about the key fitting all units.

[AMRadio] Schematic CAD's?

[AMRadio] 833 Homebrew by W5TOP & N5DUP

2007-04-08 Thread A.R.S. - W5AMI

I just got these photo's from my good friend Paul/N5DUP in West Texas.
Soon to be on the air out there. With the help of Charles/W5TOP,
Paul/N5DUP built this from misc. parts from an old Gates BC
transmitter and other sources (one item from me). Appears to have
link coupled output. A single 833 modulated by 810's. The mods can
be seen in the lower section lit up. A Ranger is built right into the
unit as a VFO/exciter. They built this and finished it about 5 years
ago, then Paul got involved in some more important issues, so it's
never been on the air. Paul just recently came back on the air and
plans to get this beast on the air soon.

call them a dead-air group, because one of their tactics is to simply
monitor the frequency and not transmit, for periods ranging anywhere from 20

I'll say this again. I think the problem lies in the fact there are
very few people in this area active on amfone.net. In the QSO forum,
there is a lot of chit chat of "locals" who relate to one another
because they know each other from local hamfests, QSO's on the air,
etc.

I think the real solution would be to somehow entice hams from the
areas not covered so well currently on amfone.net to join up and
become a "part of the family". Feeling like the "red headed step
child" is not good regardless if it's one person or many.

I think Todd has a real point about too many choose to use the
internet instead of getting on the damned air! Not only has the
internet hurt hamfests in a big way, I also think it has put a real
damper on people actually wanting to fire up their rigs and actually
talk!

Maybe I should close down AMRadio for a few months and see what happens!

I am as guilty as anyone, as I spend way too much time in front of a
CRT, but it's also my job as a programmer.

I will say this too; I am not a one mode man. Some of us think it's
AM or nothing, and that's fine, but what I do have a problem with are
a handful of AM'ers right here in my neck of the woods who chatter
about me or someone else they "consider" an AM'er to be found
somewhere talking on SSB. That is the sort of petty crap that that we
can do without in ham radio.

Also, there are a lot of folks out there who would love to operate AM,
however they have been made to feel less than dirt because they tried
operating with their rice box. I've heard it happen, and I don't like
it. Are we AM'ers, or boatanchor operators? Seems there is this idea
that if you operate AM, you have got to use something made before you
were born. I have both old and new stuff myself, and I will operate
AM with either. I think AM would be a lot more popular if we welcomed
the use of appliance rigs along with everything else. Why not?

Well, I'm getting off track here, but this whole thing has to do with
attitude, and I think we should all think about what we say, don't
say, and how we treat others in general. Just because there are a lot
of rednecks and kooks on 75 meters does not mean we have to follow
their antics.

One last comment about the AM nets in the 3880 to 3890 region; I know
some of you on this list belong to a couple of these nets. PLEASE
zero beat your NCS and spread the word too!! Having a net on 3885
where folks are everywhere from 3881 to 3888 checking in, basically
eliminates the possibility for others who wish to operate in that
little window from doing so ...it's just good operating practice.

as they can be found there 365 days a year.

Second of all, they have taken the belated courtesy of moving at least
slightly off frequency (perhaps 1kHz) during the AMI net. At calmer
moments they move off the frequency altogether. That should give you and
other AM operators the opportunity to check in. It would be very welcome if
you would operate AM on the AM calling frequency before they get started to
remind them that they have moved in on a very active AM frequency, or
suggest to them that they really are interfering. I am, however, afraid any
attempt at the latter would only reinforce their intent.

I understand 3870 has been a popular AM frequency for approximately 25
years, well before the SSB guys in TX took up their roost. I know they were
not active when I first participated in AM fifteen years ago. In any event
3870 is currently identified by the ARRL as the West Coast AM call in
frequency. It would be a pleasure to think they would be gentlemen enough
to find a meeting place outside the AM window.

Bill,

I guess I don't get it. First of all, what does any of this have to
do with the original topic posted?

Second, what would you have us "5 landers" do? Fight your battles for
you guys in 6 Land? This SSB group is a lot bigger than the 2 or 3
you suggest, and I for one am not going to lay a carrier on them just
because I can!

What exactly are you asking or suggesting "us 5 landers" do for you?
There are groups of 6 and 7 landers that get in between 3880 and 3890
daily on SSB. Do you think we would suggest you "6 landers" just take
care of that for us?

Maybe I'm missing the big point here...

[AMRadio] Source for HV ceramic caps online?

2007-03-14 Thread A.R.S. - W5AMI

I need a plate bypass cap, .0047 @ 6KV minimum. Does anyone know a
source online where I can order one ASAP. Preferably a website that
publishes their darn prices too. So many won't do that. Mouser used
to carry some close to this, but say they are obsolete.

Thanks,

Brian / w5ami

[AMRadio] Two New Co-Admins - WELCOME

2007-03-06 Thread A.R.S. - W5AMI

I have the pleasure of announcing that we have two new
co-administrators for the AM Reflector to help monitor and maintain
the 10+ year old list. Please join in my appreciation to Jim/W5JO,
and Kent/KA5MIR for their willingness to help keep this email list
going as it has over the last several years. I have the utmost trust
and faith with both these gentlemen in their judgement and ability to
maintain the list in anyway they see fit.

As of now, we have three co-admins (in no particular order):

Paul/WA3VJB
Kent/KA5MIR
Jim/W5JO

Until further notice, I will maintain the ownership of this list, but
know things can change with time. I am scheduled to have surgery
later this month, and have no clue to how long I could be
incapacitated, and have complete trust in these three gentlemen to
carry on with the tradition we've had as a "gentlemanly group" for all
the years we've been going.

Please welcome these new admins, and respect their decisions in
helping run the AM Radio email list. I have full confidence in their
new roll with this list.

Vry 73 All.

Re: [AMRadio] Brid Wattmeter for Sale

On 3/6/07, Jim Wilhite <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

I have a Bird 4411 peak reading wattmeter for sale. If you
are not familiar with the 4411 it uses only one slug to read
from 2-30 megacycles and reads power in the following steps.
10 watts, 30, 100, 300, 1000, 3000 and 10 KW. The power
range is selected by a rotary switch on the front of the
meter.

The 4410 is the same meter yet will not power by AC mains.
You can read about the meter at the following link, assuming
it works correctly.
http://www.rfparts.com/bird.html#multi

The 4411 is powered by 110 or 230 VAC (switch selectable) or
by a single 9 volt battery for field use. I am selling the
meter with the slug for the above range. New the meter from
Bird is over 700 dollars plus the slug. It has type N
connectors and has just a few scuffs on the case, not many.

$450. Plus shipping.

Wow Jim! Sure wish I had known you had this about four months back,
before I got mine.

That is one nice meter

You might consider a HI-POT tester for that instead, Rick. You can
find them on ePay from time to time at a fairly good price. Without
applying actual test voltage to that iron, a megger will lead you to a
false positive.

I would like to get one myself, however it's one of those things you
don't use that often and gathers dust.

Brian,

GOOD DEAL!

Until you poke around, you don't know if YOU are supposed to supply the
thermocouple OR if it is INTERNAL.

Yours is INTERNAL and already supplied AND matched to the meter.

Life is GOOD! Makes it very simple.

I guess I'm still concerned with the meter itself being in-line with
just one leg of the feed-line causing an imbalance. Guess I just need
to hook her up and see if I can detect any impedance changes on my
LP-100. If not, I'll be good to go!
