Subject: [amsat-bb] satellite VUCC #210!

Hi!

After I resubmitted my satellite VUCC application last Tuesday (10th)
through the Logbook of the World, things seem to be working so much
better. That application was approved the day after I submitted it
(Wednesday, 11 May). Then the VUCC certificate and pin were mailed
from ARRL on Thursday according to the postmark on the cardboard
mailing tube, and it was in my mailbox today. Now this is how the
electronic VUCC application process should work. Again, thanks to
those who have submitted their logs to the LOTW system. I'm now at
114 confirmed via LOTW, as one more grid was confirmed in the past
few days since my application was processed.

I'm happy that ARRL was able to process this application in a way
much more timely than my original VUCC application back in February.
I think there are still some bugs in the process of moving VUCC into
the LOTW system, and maybe some will be able to talk with the ARRL
folks at Dayton later this week about that. The document that John
K8YSE referenced earlier today about the discrepancy between VUCC
and DXCC application fees is an interesting read. It shows what I
(and others) have felt about the VUCC fee structure. This, too,
is something that should be brought up to the ARRL at Dayton. This
has already had an effect on whether hams will apply for - or get
endorsements for - VUCC awards.

For those going to Dayton, have a great time!

73!

 145.410 MHz -600 KHz 118.8 Hz Pl

I monitor them when driving around, but don't hear much AMSAT- specific

I was wondering if there might be an "agreed on" 2m or 70cm frequency

Those repeaters have been suggested by AMSAT in the past because they
are close to the Fairborn hotel where AMSAT has its room block and

Setting the record straight, however, they do not belong to DARA; they

[amsat-bb] revised VUCC fees; comparison updated

2011-05-16 Thread John Papay
Chris, KC0YBM, discovered that the new VUCC application
form dated "May2011" has some reduced fees on it. I have
revised my one page comparison accordingly. It can be
downloaded at: http://www.papays.com/vuccfees052011.pdf

The major concern is the initial application for VUCC compared
to DXCC. If you submit 120 cards for your initial VUCC award,
you'll pay $35.00. If you submit 120 cards for your initial
DXCC award, you will pay only $12.00! This certainly discourages
participation in the VUCC program from those just starting out.

Note that once again fees were changed without any fanfare. You
just download the application and see what they are. Considering
all of the email we get from the ARRL, you would think that the new
fees would be announced via that venue. Just another point to discuss
with the ARRL.

Please print some copies of the new version and take them with
you to Dayton. It will help put pressure on the situation.

John K8YSE

[amsat-bb] Re: Satellites Over US West Coast

2011-05-16 Thread Alan P. Biddle
Paul,

There are really only three possibilities. Your QTH, your Keps, or your
system clock. Fortunately, it is easy to find the culprit.

On the AMSAT predict page, select pass prediction, and then near the top of
the table, "View current location of FO-29." That will bring up a real time
map. Look at both maps, and make certain your QTH is correctly displayed on
both.

Next, compare the AMSAT page position of the satellite with the real time
SATPC32 prediction. (Both give the Sub-Satellite Points numerically, but
use different conventions.) The maps are sufficiently different you may
need to wait until the satellite passes some readily identifiable point such
as a coastline to compare. (Even if your QTH is wrong on one of the
programs, the current position should be correct. If not, then your system
clock or Keps are suspect.)

If the QTH is good but the current satellite position is not, then on the
main SATPC32 page open the Satellites menu, and then check the Source Files
in the left window. Make certain it is NASA.ALL and look at the very bottom
where it will give you the date File Date. It should be today if you
updated it. It is entirely possible to have a different source file than
NASA.ALL selected. If it is an old one, then you will see an error. Right
now, FO-29 agrees exactly on SATPC32, the AMSAT tracking page, and another
program I use. (The are other issues which apply only to the ISS, but are
not a factor on FO-29 since it is "well behaved.")

There are some more obscure possibilities, but knowing the result of your
tests should allow us to narrow down the possibilities.

73s,

Alan
WA4SCA

OK now I'm getting somewhere!
My SatPC32 predictions DO NOT match the info on the AMSAT link below!

My location appears to be entered correctly into the tracking program, the
PC clock is correct and the keps are updated against the 'nasa.all' source.

AMSAT shows next FO-29 pass as 22:41:15 - 23:01:29

My SatPC32 shows FO-29 pass as 22:24:00 - 22:33:00

No wonder I don't hear anything!
Now...what could be wrong in my SatPC32 setup to cause this?

Can you hear the beacon on FO-29? You also might have to adjust the uplink

Do your SatPC32 predictions match the ones from the AMSAT online prediction?

i'd be happy to be on one of the passes to listen for you or transmit.

Zack of course I'm on full duplex! But I need to get my headset/mic

[amsat-bb] Re: Fm satellite Frequencies and Doppler

2011-05-16 Thread Zachary Beougher
Actually, I just use the VFO on my D7A as well. ;-)

As far as stepping on someone, it is going to happen on a single channel
satellite, just make sure it is not deliberate. Listen, if no one is
calling or in the middle of a QSO, jump in! Don't be afraid to throw your
call out.

Another thing that you should definitely consider - full duplex. In case
you don't know what this is, full duplex is simultaneously listening to the
downlink WHILE transmitting. This prevents a lot of useless QRM. When you
call, you can not only tell if you are stepping on someone, but you can hear
how good/bad your uplink signal is, and you can be sure that you are getting
through and not just getting stepped on. You are even ahead of the game -
the TH-D72A has this feature! All you need to do is learn how to use it.
You may, however, want to try a few more passes before diving into full
duplex. Full duplex will not do you any good if you have trouble hearing or
tracking the birds.

Let me tell you what I have been doing:

I have programmed my TH-D72A with the TCA as a base. I switch to it
then move it to my VFO (F+VFO). When the bird is going to approach, I
instantly go up 10Khz and work from there. Its actually ridiculously
easy to just switch down via the tuning knob (so programming above

doppler, I wound up finding the signal a bit lower than 10khz up (its

elevation) but when it does, I'm good for the remainder of the pass.

The AO-51 FAQ page spells it out very nicely. Knowing the polar chart
in your head for the pass is very helpful. It allows you to
gracefully move with the signal as the satellite passes over you.

My biggest issue right now is knowing when to call out. The flurry of
folks calling CQ on each pass where I live (FN20) makes it very hard
to either a) not step on anyone and b) even find a window to get in.
I will keep trying though (maybe when the weather gets a bit better on
the East Coast).

Hi Paul,

What satellites have you been listening for?

What are you using to determine when the passes are?

What are you using for antenna and radio?

The sats are there and functional - it has nothing to do with your location as
long as you have the pass times and locations correct.

There are a lot of variables that could account for your lack of "hearing".

[amsat-bb] Re: Fm satellite Frequencies and Doppler

2011-05-16 Thread Zachary Beougher
Alexandar,

I am not sure how you have it programmed into the radio so far, but I would
program 5 memory frequencies into your HT:

(AO27)

436.805 (AOS)
436.800
436.795 (TCA - Time Of Closest Approach)
436.790
436.785 (LOS)

Since AO27 switches off way before LOS, you will probably never need the
last frequency - 436.785 - but these would be the common frequency steps for
a typical bird like AO51, SO50, etc. Don't be afraid to make adjustments
either. I find that to hear the 30 sec. of TLM right before AO27 switches
to VOX I have to be at 436.810. This is probably more a feature of the
radio itself. If you are having trouble hear at AOS or LOS, try adjusting
your downlink by 5kHz.

You can also add alpha-numeric tags to your frequencies to keep them in
order:

AO27-1
AO27-2
AO27-TCA
AO27-4
AO27-5

There are many different variations you can choose from.

I too am a beginner and wondered about how to calculate doppler and/or
determine a rough estimation based on pass information (elevation/az,
etc.). I tend to start about 10 kHz up on any given pass which seems
to be a reasonable approximation for most of the birds so far (I
started this way because I followed the AO-27 FAQ).

My biggest challenge is finding the signal while adjusting for
doppler. Once I get it though, I'm good for the rest of the pass!

I was originally wanting to get digipeated because I wanted to reach an
i-gate so that I could follow my track on the internet once I get back home,
and I didn't give it enough thought that a digipeater is not what I need -
it is the i-gate. A more accurate question would be, will there be an
i-gate at Dayton?, which it sounds like there will be. Other than that, I
do want the other APRS users to see me, but simplex will take card of that.

Thanks for your help!

But why do you need to reach a digi? You will be within wet-noodle range of
every APRS person at Dayton and they can hear/see you even if you are on low
power. There will hopefully be an IGate at the Hamvention to pick up
everyone.

Even if you run 50 watts, you aren’t going to get into a Dayton digi because
any digiepater that can hear the area will be 100% jammed on the input.

Limiting everyone to simplex or 1 hop only is the same technique used in the
Losangeles basin. Everyone that is there is there, and the channel is full,
so no reason to bring any more packets in or out.

See http://www.aprs.org/fixingLA.html

Ore more generically, everything there is to know about digipeating, and
MINIMIZING channel load.

Proper operation of an event like Dayton would suggest that putting up a
digipeater would be the worst thing to do. With over 300+ mobiles and
portables beaconing away all in simplex range of each other, a digipeater
would do nothing but drastically reduce the reliability of the channel by
half or more.

The proper way to handle a ham radio event with a massive influx of APRS
operations is to:

1) Have no digi at the focal point (Hamvention)
2) Have all digis going out 30 miles in all directions be ONE-HOP DIGIS
ONLY. That is, they only respond to WIDE1-1 or WIDE2-2 and nothing else.
They digipeat once and do callsign substitution so the packet goes no
further
3) Strategic IGates are placed right at Hamvention so they hear everything
in simplex range
4) Additional IGates are configured so that every surrounding digi going out
30 miles has an IGate to hear the one-hop packets.

5) Doing all the above, then the hundreds of APRS mobiles and portables do
not have to change anything. They just drive into town with their normal
WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 settings.

Bob, WB4APR

[amsat-bb] satellite VUCC #210!

2011-05-16 Thread Patrick STODDARD (WD9EWK/VA7EWK)

Hello,

I have been listening during satellite passes for weeks now, and hear
nothing. I am in DM03. Has anyone in the Southern California area heard or
worked a satellite in the past two or three weeks?

But why do you need to reach a digi? You will be within wet-noodle range of
every APRS person at Dayton and they can hear/see you even if you are on low
power. There will hopefully be an IGate at the Hamvention to pick up everyone.

Even if you run 50 watts, you aren’t going to get into a Dayton digi because
any digiepater that can hear the area will be 100% jammed on the input.

Limiting everyone to simplex or 1 hop only is the same technique used in the
Losangeles basin. Everyone that is there is there, and the channel is full, so
no reason to bring any more packets in or out.

[amsat-bb] Re: Fm satellite Frequencies and Doppler

2011-05-16 Thread Justin Pinnix
Hi Kev,

The active FM birds are AO-51, SO-50, AO-27, and ISS. I think SO-67 and
HO-68 are sometimes available. I'm sure someone will correct me if I have
omitted any.

You can get their frequencies by clicking on each one on this page:
http://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/satellites/status.php

The doppler shift will vary throughout the pass, so there is no one position
that works. ISS has a VHF downlink that varies +/- 3Khz (approx) during the
pass. The others have UHF downlinks that vary +/- 15Khz (approx). It will
always be higher at the beginning, on frequency when the sat is at max
elevation, and lower at the end. Being FM, the tonal quality won't change,
the signal will just get weaker as it leaves the passband, so periodically
tune around for maximum signal strength.

[amsat-bb] Demonstration Schedule for Dayton 2011

2011-05-16 Thread Keith Pugh
This year with AO-51 and HO-68 on the Sick List and SO-67 scheduled for
Europe and Africa, the schedule will be a little slim for the FM Birds. We
will do the best we can with the Linear Birds and the available FM Birds.
The attached schedule is in UTC and corresponds to the times that the Dayton
Demonstration Area will be staffed. Since this is an outdoor area, we could
have weather problems; however, the "Weather Guessers" are showing a good
weekend so far.

[amsat-bb] Re: VUCC Fees - Dayton Hamvention

2011-05-16 Thread John Geiger
If you can't make Dayton, the ARRL National Convention is at Hamcomm this
year in Dallas. I am sure plenty of ARRL officials will be there. Let them
know the inequities with the VUCC fees as well. An email campaign couldn't
hurt either. I have held off applying for 6m and satellite endorsements
until this gets figured out because I can't afford the endorsements at the
current rate.

[amsat-bb] VUCC Fees - Dayton Hamvention

2011-05-16 Thread John Papay
If you are planning on going to Dayton, please take
some time to visit the ARRL area not far from the AMSAT
booth. Seek out the highest ranking officials you can find
and talk with them about the VUCC program and LOTW.

The fee schedule for VUCC applications, both paper and LOTW,
released back in mid January has not changed to my knowledge.
Very little has been said about this issue to date. The fees
were excessive and if continued, would have a negative impact
on the VUCC program.

You can talk about the high cost of an application but there is
nothing like comparing it to the cost of a similar DXCC application.
When you do that, it is apparent that something is not right. I
prepared a one sheet comparison of three typical VUCC vs DXCC
applications to give to ARRL officials at the Orlando Hamcation.
Newington was not present at Orlando but the Florida Director was
and got a copy. I have uploaded my comparison to my website. Please
print some copies, put them in your hamfest bag and give them to
those you talk with at the ARRL. The more League officials that see
this, the better chance we have of getting these fees reduced and in
line with DXCC application fees.

Download the comparison at: http://www.papays.com/vuccfees2011.pdf

There are many issues with the VUCC program other than fees. I made
an application back in mid January, two days after the new few schedule
appear on arrl.org. It was processed and my totals appeared on my LOTW
page. Last week I received the endorsement stickers but have yet to
receive the "VUCC Grid Report" which lists all of your confirmed girds
on the left side of the pages and has space on the right side for you
to list the new grids you are applying for credit. Without this sheet,
you cannot file for another endorsement via an Awards Manager (card checker)
or by sending them to the League. I know that they have been having
problems with implementing VUCC in LOTW, but the lack of information about
the status of the VUCC Program is troubling. The new website was supposed
to help disseminate information faster but it is not working in the case.
As ARRL members we should be kept informed of the VUCC issues, status and
timelines. This is another great point to discuss with ARRL officials.

Hope to see many of you at the Hamvention.

73,
John K8YSE

You should be OK for APRS stations.
W8GUC, W8BI, KI6sz and others will probably be in range.

[amsat-bb] Re: Digi @ Dayton?

2011-05-16 Thread Bob Bruninga
> [does] anyone set up a digipeater at Dayton,
> or do we rely on the local digi’s?

Proper operation of an event like Dayton would suggest that putting up a
digipeater would be the worst thing to do. With over 300+ mobiles and
portables beaconing away all in simplex range of each other, a digipeater would
do nothing but drastically reduce the reliability of the channel by half or
more.

The proper way to handle a ham radio event with a massive influx of APRS
operations is to:

1) Have no digi at the focal point (Hamvention)
2) Have all digis going out 30 miles in all directions be ONE-HOP DIGIS ONLY.
That is, they only respond to WIDE1-1 or WIDE2-2 and nothing else. They
digipeat once and do callsign substitution so the packet goes no further
3) Strategic IGates are placed right at Hamvention so they hear everything in
simplex range
4) Additional IGates are configured so that every surrounding digi going out 30
miles has an IGate to hear the one-hop packets.

5) Doing all the above, then the hundreds of APRS mobiles and portables do not
have to change anything. They just drive into town with their normal
WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 settings.

There are several APRS stations on 144.390 but I'm not aware of any general
