Domenico, I'm pretty sure members have been assigned numbers sequentially since the early days. The membership number is can be thought of more as a seniority number, the lower the number, the longer you've been a member. So the highest number is the number of people who have at sometime held a membership. The actual number is diluted by SK's and folks who for whatever reason, let their membership lapse. Andrew, I for one do appreciate the work the board and other volunteers do. It's certainly something I'm far from qualified to do and to be honest, I probably would not want to. I came into the hobby long after the HEO era ended, so I can only live vicariously through others recollections and hope "Someday" That being said I also can see there is a new launch paradigm and we have to adjust to it. I commend the board for accepting this and doing what they can to adapt to the new reality. I imagine the engineering obstacles to get a 3u Cubesat that would be viable in HEO are many, which most likely put that well into the future. When I give my talk on Satellite engineering principles to local clubs, the most common question I get asked is "When are we going to get an HEO?" My Answer is Not for a long time. 73 and looking forward to Fox.. SpaceX is Elon Musk's company, who founded PayPal and Tesla Motors as well. He's not an amateur anything; he's one of the most successful businessmen in the world, a real-life Tony Stark. AMSAT-DL has met with Space-X, and this fact has been published in many places (http://amsat.org/pipermail/ans/2010/000378.html). SpaceX rarely launches pure test flights, they normally have paying customers even on first launches. Secondary payloads are handled through Spaceflight Services, and their rates are published at http://spaceflightservices.com/pricing-plans/ . Fifty kg, or about half of what Eagle would have been, to GTO would cost 3 million dollars. Hey! that's only like $1000 per member! P3E, at 150kg, would be closer to 8 million, IF it could be made to fit the space available, and most likely mounted and launched sideways. Opportunities may still be out there to go to HEO, but it's a fairy tale to think that all we have to do is knock on the door and ask. It is also disheartening to see that so many just assume that we aren't trying. 73, Drew KO4MA ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? But of course we have all seen satellites, crosing the night sky. and seen them in binoculars. and even ever more rarely while using a telescope viewing something in the sky happen to have one of these things go zipping past. But a buddy of mine was viewing Saturn the other night, and he spied something moving. very small and faint. Stefan, My knowledge of the '30's comes from listening to my parents rant about how tough they had it as kids. That being said, I am on LotW and Eqsl (AG). [amsat-bb] Assistance with a presentation
All, I am beginning to prepare a presentation for my Club (The Thunderbird Amateur Radio Club, www.w7tbc.org) on the basic engineering considerations for amateur satellites. My original thought was to briefly discuss the various engineering considerations and then look at how they are applied. I am thinking in addition to tie this in to FOX, by discussing how AMSAT will solve engineering issues on the FOX series of sats. I think this approach will help make the concepts clear, while also serving to promote FOX. With this in mind, I'd like to know if anyone on the FOX team would be willing to field questions from me during as I prepare the presentation, to make sure I get it complete and right. I also wonder if it would be possible to arrange to have the Fox-1 Model made available to me when I give the presentation? What hoops do I need to jump through to make that happen? (The presentation will be given in mid October) Thanks in advance for any assistance offered. 73 Rick Tejera (K7TEJ) Sagauro Astronomy Club www.saguaroastro.org Thunderbird Amatuer Radio Club www.w7tbc.org ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Of those, 4891 (44.7%) were on AO-51's different configurations, made from locations across the continental USA as well as from Canada and Mexico. Since July 2010, I have logged 2233 satellite QSOs, with 574 of those (25.7%) on AO-51. My last AO-51 QSOs were logged on 13 November. As others have said, AO-51 was the satellite that brought me into this part of our hobby. I had been a member of AMSAT for a few years before then, worked a couple of stations on SO-35 in 2000 and a QSO on UO-14 in 2003, and even pitched in a little $$$ to help toward the AO-51 launch fundraising campaign in 2004. Once I started on AO-51, I tried SO-50 and AO-27, the ISS cross-band repeater when it was active, and then on to SSB and CW via satellite. Not having as many hands as Clint, I use a y chord on the receive Cable from my headset to a small digital voice recorder. I still write the calls down on a log I created, since I'll forget at least half of it by the time I'm ready to key up :) After the pass I play the recording and get the time of the QSO by adding the elapsed time to the start of the pass. [amsat-bb] Re: Apollo 12
Burns, I'll have to listen again.. and yes they reset it before TLI. They were quite busy during the parking orbit. Dick Gordon had to realign and reset the guidance platform, no easy task considering he had no reference as he normally would have. Also he had trouble identifying the Alignment Stars as there was a lot of debris from the jettison of the Optics cover and the alignment stars were in the southern part of the sky, and were not the brightest stars n the catalogue. While he was at that Conrad and bean had to bring the fuel cells back on line and get all the electrics & systems up & running. Conrad was concerned that the forward RCS thrusters may have gotten water in from the rain and possibly frozen (Which fortunately was not the case. All this and the usual pre TLI tasks. As for Apollo 11, most folks think the words spoken on the moon were "Houston Tranquility base here, the Eagle has Landed" Not so. They were Aldrin: "ACA out of detent" Armstrong: "Out of detent Auto", Aldrin: Mode Control, Both Auto, Descent engine command override, off. Engine Arm off, 413 is in". The ACA was the Attitude Control Assembly which turned the RCS thrusters off. If they didn't so this the thrusters would have continued to fire trying to maintain attitude. The remaining items essentially safed the descent engine and 413 in was a command to the AGS (Abort Guidance System) that told the System, they'd landed and to note this position for reference n case of an immediate abort. If you hadn't noticed, I'm fascinated with the Apollo missions. :) I recommend the book: "How Apollo flew to the Moon" by W. David Woods for those interested n learning more about the engineering & mechanics of the moon missions. I don't know what pass(es) that will be however, but I know that Patrick, WD9EWK, has got those two pretty well covered anyway. We're still running all Arizona counties on HF CW and SSB, which really puts a dent in efficient grid ops, but we'll be turning toward the northeast in a couple days. [amsat-bb] Re: My First Satellite Contacts
Ben, Congratulations and welcome to the kool-aid. You never forget your first satellite contact, mine was W6AJP 21 July @ 0100UT on AO-51. Your comments are spot on. What's the saying? We have two ears so we should listen twice as much as we talk. Like you, I'd love to get on the linear birds, but it's just not financially feasible right now. Someday I use both HRD and N3FPJ's Contact log. I also keep a paper log as well and Just recently set up for LotW. HRD is free and N3FPJ does ask for a $19 registration fee, But I tend to lean that way, $19 is not a big expense in my book and I like the way it work better. Hat being said I upload to LotW from HRD, because I've figured that part out first :). Try 'em both (N3FPJ has a 45 day free demo period) and go with what works best for you. Go here for information about LotW and Satellite logging: http://www.arrl.org/files/file/LoTW%2520Instructions/N5JB.pdf Again Welcome to the birds. Hope to work you soon. 73 Clear Skies Rick Tejera Saguaro Astronomy Club Phoenix, Arizona www.saguaroastro.org saguaroas...@cox.net K7TEJ, AMSAT 38452 -Original Message- From: amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org [mailto:amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org] On Behalf Of Ben Napper Sent: Tuesday, May 17, 2011 14:32 To: amsat-bb@amsat.org Subject: [amsat-bb] My First Satellite Contacts Wow! I've been grinning ear-to-ear for a little while now that I have my first satellite contacts completed. I find it astonishing that a hobby as mundane sounding as Amateur Radio can have any aspect of it that is as exhilarating as this experience has been. From the day I got my Tech ticket, I've wanted to work the birds, but, being a younger ham, life takes its turns. Thank you to my #1 - K8YSE, #2 - AC0RA, #3 - W7JPI, #4 - WA4NV, and #5 - K8TL. That said, I've learned a few things while lurking on here and the satellites. - Be patient. There's a lot of hams and only a few FM birds. (I'd love to get into the linear birds too, but I'd need congressional approval from the wife for the budgetary consideration required to make that a reality.) - Don't try to transmit on the bird's downlink frequency. No matter how hard you try, you will be doing a lot of talking to yourself. - Clean up the dog poo in the backyard. Now, some questions: I want to use Ham Radio Deluxe as my log (unless I hear of something that is much better) and I'm setup for LotW. How often should I upload to LotW? Are there any gotchas with logging satellite contacts? Best practices? Also, I want to (eventually) do paper QSL cards. If you do them, how do you usually handle them? Who do you recommend to use to get them made? Thanks, Ben Napper - KC0PCQ ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? This time I'll actually type something before hitting send;) The two burn maneuver is essentially a Hohmann transfer maneuver. The point of the first burn becomes the new apogee or perigee (depending on the direction of the burn). The burn will raise or lower the antipodal point from where the burn occurred. At that point a second burn in the same direction will bring the point of the first burn to the new level. But you all probably already knew that:) If you want to play around with this try this: http://orbit.medphys.ucl.ac.uk/home.php Sent from my iPod Rick Tejera Editor, SACnews Saguaro Astronomy Club www.saguaroastro.org K7TEJ On Feb 10, 2011, at 17:17, "Bob Bruninga" wrote: >> a retrograde maneuver will remove ARISSsat from >> the proximity of ISS very very quickly. > > It is interesting that any such one-thrust (arm throw) maneuver will then > intersect the ISS exactly one orbit later. Was everyone on AO-51? SO-50 & AO-51 had a mutual pass at 2329 from DM33. I tried SO-50 figuring it would be less crowded. I was right, I was the only one on! I actually had to transmit the 74hz on tone before I could hear my downlink. Toward the end of the pass it sounded like someone else was trying to answer me, all I heard were a couple of short carriers, no modulation. Was anyone else trying to work SO-50? This will be the largest rocket ever to launch from the West Coast of the United States. "This launch marks a significant milestone in our nation's space capability" said Lt. Col. Brady Hauboldt, launch director. "We've really restored a national capability for heavy lift on the Western Range, something we have not had since the last of the Titan IV-Bs flew out of Vandenberg. This extends our ability to cost effectively deliver payloads of all sizes and compliments." The launch follows three years of preparations and $100 million in base infrastructure upgrades at SLC-6. It makes Vandenberg unique in providing the full spectrum of space lift capability delivering payloads of all sizes to orbit aboard the Minotaur through Delta II, Atlas V and now the Delta IV, said Hauboldt. While this is the first Delta IV HLV from Vandenberg, it will be the fifth in the program's history. The first launch occurred in January 2004 from the East Coast. The rocket will carry a national security payload for the NRO. -- LAUNCH VISIBILITY AND VIEWING The Delta IV Heavy slated to lift-off from Vandenberg AFB on Thursday is a rocket enormous size and power. For observers in close proximity to the launch pad at south base, the launch should be impressive. However, for observers further away, the display will be more subdued because of the propellants the rocket uses and the time of day. The Delta IV Heavy launch vehicle consists of three liquid oxygen and hydrogen fueled Delta IV rockets that are joined together. The vehicle does not use any solid fuel rocket motors. Unlike solid fuel rockets or liquid fuel rockets that use solid fuel strap-on motors for extra thrust, vehicles that rely entirely on liquid propellants produce very little to no smoke trail. Such vehicles may create a contrail when they pass through an area of the atmosphere called the contrail zone, but this only lasts several seconds. Burning solid rocket fuel produces a tremendous amount of light. Burning liquid rocket propellants, on the other hand, also produce light, but the amount is much less and the flame is semi-transparent or clear. The fact that the launch is scheduled for the early afternoon will further impact launch viewing. The Sun will be high above the horizon and the launch will occur against a bright sky background. This will greatly reduce the maximum launch viewing distance. Taking the above factors into account, persons without prior knowledge of the launch may accidentally see it with the naked eye as far away as 25 miles. People who are specifically looking for the launch may be able to see it without optical assistance as far away as 50 miles. Observers using binoculars or a telescope could possibly see the launch as far away as 100 miles provided they look at the right area of the sky at the right time. People within 50 miles of the launch site or the Delta IV Heavy's flight path should be able to hear the launch. In outlying areas, the sound will probably arrive a few minutes after liftoff and consist of a low frequency rumble. The best place to view the launch will probably be near the south end of the base. The idea is to get as close to the launch site as possible while avoiding trespassing on government or private property and staying clear of any low clouds or fog. Regarding viewing areas, Vandenberg AFB Public Affairs recommends the public go to Surf Beach to view the launch. But to hear the countdown net they need to go to the Corral Road viewing location. Maps are located on the Vandenberg AFB Public Affairs Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/30thSpaceWing The launch should be visible to the

Bill, I use Satellite tracker on my iPod quite successfully, the prediction match up quite nicely with both Satscape & Satpc32. That being said I also have Pro sat, which I don't particularly like, for me that's the one I can't get to match up with my Pc based programs. Px sat is nice but doesn't have a sky view like Sat tracker, It does have an alarm function that pops up a reminder that a pass is imminent. That is its main purpose for me. For completeness, I just finally bucked down and paid the $24.99 for Pocket Sat. I used this one on my old palm pilot, Still have that as a back up when all else fails). If you've use pocket sat in one of it's other platforms it will look familiar. The big advantage is the number of birds it can track at any one time. The one thing it is missing (for me anyway) is on the pass prediction window, the az of the max elevation. I mount my antenna on an old telescope mount and need to align the mount so it points to the correct azimuth at max el. Not a big deal as I can get that from other sources (mainly Satscape) or deduce it from the start & end AZ. Can't think of any obvious reasons why your Sat tracker app is not jibing with other apps. I like it because I can add the frequencies for each bird and it will show the Doppler correct frequency, helps me know when to tune (I use an HT for sat ops) Just my 0.612 Malaysian Ringgits worth. Tom, I agree with you completely. I too enjoy working SO-50 on the odd hour passes. (Was out with the family last night so was on the air). I too notice the bird is very sensitive to polarization. I have a separate memory programmed in for the on tone. On the late passes I'll key that shortly after the bird comes over the hill and then check to see if I can hear myself on the downlink. As you said, it's a fine bird and a great alternative to the pileup on AO-51. I also enjoy the late passes on SO-67 when it on over NA. I'll try to be on tonight's pass. Hello all, With all the rumblings about excessive, rude and uncivil activity, especially on AO-51, there are passes from both SSB and FM satellites that go completely unused. For the last few nights, I have drug out in the late evening to attempt to make a few QSO's on SO-50. On both nights, last evening was a 05:51 AOS 1-15-2011, I could hear the satellite via an occasional retransmitted carrier, but there was no one else on. Tonight in North Texas I have a great 70 degree pass at 04:38 AOS and would encourage others to give it a shot, especially if you are newer to the FM birds. SO-50 is available 24/7 but pass times vary due to the nature of it's orbit. It can be a bit challenging in different ways compared to other sats. First it is relatively low power, 250mw. Second, it does require a PL and I even forgot that it requires a different PL to activate than to just use so I will have to try that tonight. (Perhaps that was the issue for me last night, I will check my memories). Also it does seem to me that it does downlink about 5Kc below published frequencies. SO-50 does seem to need a bit more switching of the polarization, (For me and my arrow, that means quit a bit of spinning), to hear and get in. Additionally, it is not a bent pipe, retransmitting noise even if it hears nothing like AO-51 does so manual aiming is trickey if you do not hear anything coming down. All in all though SO-50 is a good bird to work and it would be nice to see some activity on it during the odd hour passes. Zack, I use my TH-D7A with a home brew Dual band yagi (Kent Brittan's Plans). I note that once I dial in the proper polarization on the antenna I can work most of the pass with only slight adjustments. As the pass nears it's end (these are South to North passes) I notice I have to readjust the polarization of the antenna quite radically. One thing with the arrow is that the two bands are at 90 degrees to each other, I've always wondered how that affects things. If you're dialed in on 70cm, you're going to be off on 2m and vice versa. My homebrew antenna has both bands on the same plane. I tried the D7 afterward (using the Arrow like I would for a pass) on a couple local repeaters, and I was having a hard time getting into them, when usually I could hit them with a duck. I pulled the Arrow off and stuck the duck on, and I can get into all the repeaters fine. Keeping all of that in mind, I went back to the Arrow and put a THG71A on in place of the D7 (same battery that was in the D7), and I could hit the repeater okay. I put the D7 faceplate back on, and it would not work. With the above information, I am getting indications of both an issue with the radio and/or Arrow. That broadcast generated a bit of controversy as well. NASA was sued by Madalyn Murray O'Hare, an athiest, for mixing religion on what was essentially a govt. Run operation. [amsat-bb] Re: Clint
Mike, Space stations get peppered with meteoroids hundreds of time a day. The design issues have long been worked out (Think Salyut in the early '70's). In the case of the ISS, the habitable area is small compared to the whole of the structure and a lot of that structure shields the habitable areas. In addition the habitable areas are covered with insulation to deal with thermal control. This is essentially layered Mylar with insulating material between the layers. In addition to thermal control, these layers also absorb the meteoroid impacts and dissipate their energy. During expected peaks in activity such as last night the station can be oriented to present the least amount of habitable area to the on coming stream. Needless to say there is more to it, but that's the basic idea. Thanks for all the QSOs during demonstrations I gave at the Superstition Amateur Radio Club's annual hamfest in Mesa, Arizona, yesterday. I worked 2 passes each on AO-7, VO-52, and HO-68, along with one SO-50 pass. I apologize if you were trying for me on the SO-50 pass around 1719 UTC, as I was chatting with Leo W7JPI and Larry WA6DIR, who both made the trip to Phoenix for the hamfest during that pass. During the VO-52 passes, instead of using my normal SSB satellite setup (two FT-817NDs), I used only one of the 817s with the all- mode receiver in the Kenwood TH-F6A tri-band HT. I bought this radio a few weeks ago, using the $100 Kenwood voucher I won at the AMSAT Symposium a couple of months ago (thanks to Kenwood and the Symposium organizers in the Chicago area for that, and all of the prizes they had on offer), mainly to make use of the all-mode receiver to shrink the size of my SSB satellite station this way. The 817's SSB receiver at 2m and 70cm is better than the all-mode receiver in the TH-F6A, but the little HT works OK. The HT makes a huge impression on the audience, seeing an FT-817 and an HT as the station I'm using for SSB satellite work. It will go in my carry-on bag with the other stuff I take on trips where I work satellites. The crowds - buyers and sellers - were larger yesterday than in the past several years. At 0615 local (1315 UTC, about an hour before sunrise), there was a line almost a half-mile (almost a km) long to get into the hamfest. Traffic was backed out onto a street and almost all the way to a freeway interchange, just to get into the hamfest in the dark! It's been a long time since I've seen that at a Phoenix-area hamfest. Along with W7JPI and WA6DIR, a couple of other satellite regulars stopped by my AMSAT table - John N7JK, and Rick K7TEJ. Thanks to the Superstation Amateur Radio Club for providing AMSAT a space at their hamfest! If anyone who worked WD9EWK during the hamfest wants a QSL card, please e-mail me with the QSO details. I often set up in the parking lot of my office, which happens to be right across the street from Scottsdale Airport, a busy corporate jet field. It took about 3 days in a row before someone asked me what I was doing. They took me up on my offer to let them plug in to listen to the pass once I told them. I don't particularly worry about it as I have my license on me if someone in law enforcement asks what I'm doing. I also would not operate from an area that I don't have permission or a right to be on. I also geocache, a hobby that often requires stealth and found that and orange workers safety vest, hardhat and a clipboard go a long way to giving the impression that you A) are at work, b) have some kind of authority to be where you are.
