There are 2 that come to mind: HamSat Droid and DroidSat. They both do
different things and make a great combo. HamSat Droid is a satellite
prediction app and DroidSat allows you to locate the bird in the sky like a
spotter scope. So use HamSat Droid to predict the bird's pass and use
DroidSat to aim your hand held antenna!

2011-02-21 Thread Ron Overdrive
I'm not sure how worried people are over 420 - 430 since there's parts of
the US you can't operate in those 10 megs. Down there from what I
understand, though I could be wrong, is amateur TV. The important thing is
we don't lose the 430 - 440 segment because that's where a lot of activity,
satellite links included, happens on 70cm. Taking away 450 - 470mhz would
also essentially kill both the FRS and GMRS bands as well which, while not
always hams, is regularly used by thousands of people.

2011-02-04 Thread Ron Overdrive
Could we get it hauled up to ISS and kicked out
the door with orbital boost engine? I guess
that would be a huge permitting battle?

Considering the interest in using the ISS as a launchpad for satellites and
manned space craft have increased, depending on how Arissat-1 fairs it might
be possible for other birds to piggy back a ride with a resupply to the ISS
for a launch and with P3E being the testbed for the P5A Mars mission it
might have enough leverage to go this route. I'd encourage both Peter and
the rest of AMSAT-DL to at least consider inquiring about it.

With that said I missed out on the opportunity to work on AO-40 as it died
before I became licensed, but when I found out about AO-40 I became hopeful
P3E would get launched so I could experience working a HEO for myself.

AO-27's schedule basically works as follows: when it turns on it transmits
roughly 30 seconds of data, activates the repeater for 7 or so minutes, then
another 90 seconds of data before shutting off. If it appears to be dead
afterwords (ie you can't hear yourself on the bird with a 2nd radio or in

[amsat-bb] Re: Droid Sat Apps

2010-07-27 Thread Ron Overdrive
I've been using HamSat Droid for a while now as its a nice little Sat
Prediction app. There are a few other Android apps for Hams out there and
many, unlike the iCrap, are free or donation ware. Some others that I use
are:

Amateur Radio Call Log - Self Explanatory. Just enter the call sign, signal
reports, and band your operating on. Quick and simple.

Compass - Best compass app out there. Not exactly a Ham or AMSAT specific
app, but its very useful for getting your bearings without having to bring a
compass with you to keep the load down. Also Digital mode makes getting your
bearings even easier if you're not familiar with how a compass works to get
your bearings.

DroidSat - This is a great little app that helps you locate and identify
where in the sky various satellites are including AMSATs. After you get your
bearings and pass info you can locate where in the pass the bird is. Really
useful if you started late in the pass or are having problems locating it.

Grid Locator - Self Explanatory. Push the button and it will use the GPS to
locate you and your grid square. HamSat Droid displays this as well, but
this useful for when you're not doing AMSAT work like VHF contesting.

Ham - May not be directly AMSAT related, but still somewhat relevant.
Displays Solar and HF/VHF propagation data.

Ham Radio Study - Studying for an exam? Take the practice exams for Tech,
General, and Extra on the crapper! ;P

IRLP Finder - Uses Google Maps to locate repeaters around you and the area
you wish to connect to that are equipped with IRLP.

Hope this gives you guys some ideas what's on the Android Market. There's
also plenty of other apps out there.

far I've only been able to find two apps relevant to hams: SATme (

What you are seeing is over-charge which is normal. The battery should
settle around the 9.6v mark and last a while there. Even when charging my

to look at regarding power consumption in the FT817 is

conserve power is to turn the IPO On, keep the NB Off, keep the Screen
Backlight Off, and stick to using the Front BNC connector will save the most
power. Wearing headphones and transmitting on lower power helps out too.

site I'm not seeing anything mentioning EIRP. Everything says to keep your
power low like 5 watts or less. I'm not sure what kind of antenna gain
they're assuming when they say that. I pretty much always operate low power
as it is and the only indicator they give is if you hear FM noise while in
SSB, unfortunately being a new ham I do not know what that sounds like.

On Thu, Jun 10, 2010 at 2:31 PM, Samudra Haque samudra.ha...@gmail.comwrote:

Hi does the spec specify the output power as EIRP or not?

If EIRP the antenna gain needs to be part of the equation and
therefore you need to reduce your transmission power to avoid desense
at the receiver on orbit. If the spec does not specify then there
should be a receiver senstivity figure already published which would
be useful in a link budget equation.

[amsat-bb] Re: HO-68 Schedule - 06-13 June 2010

2010-06-04 Thread Ron Overdrive
Those settings look correct to me. I made my first sat contact on HO-68
using just a Yaesu VX-7R ht and an Arrow II handheld yagi. So long as you're
homebrew antenna was constructed correctly, you're aiming for a realistic
max elevation (I usually aim for 30 degrees or higher), you're tuning your
downlink to compensate for the Doppler, and the sat is turned On during the
pass you should be able to establish a QSO. My biggest problem with HO-68 is
the scheduling. For me the sat is usually turned off during the good passes
I can use. If I'm lucky I may get 1 good pass with it turned on a week.

[amsat-bb] Re: new to sats

2010-05-20 Thread Ron Overdrive
Hey Jimmy, some of the easiest birds to try are AO-27, SO-50, AO-51, and
HO-68. All of them are popular birds with plenty of contacts. Only thing to
keep in mind is the schedules they run on. You want to make sure they're
turned on and what mode they're in when making a pass. A lot of that info
can be found on AMSAT.org and I've found YouTube to be a good resource for
teaching you how to make your first contact on the birds with just a dual
band yagi antenna and a HT or two. Best of luck working the birds!

[amsat-bb] AO-40 question(s)

2010-05-17 Thread Ron Overdrive
So I'm considering putting together something that can work AO-40 and
similar satellites, but everywhere I look says you need 2 radios or full
duplex. Never really said why so I'm curious why its required to have 2
radios (which just seems more complex expensive) or full duplex
to operate on this HEO. Couldn't I use a laptop and a data cable to control
a rig like a Yaesu FT-817 to line up the Rx and Tx?

[amsat-bb] Re: Field Day mode for AO-51

2010-05-04 Thread Ron Overdrive
Agreed. Sure your arm gets tired after a long pass from satellites like
HO-68, but half the fun is the simplicity and the other half being the
challenge. I doubt I would personally get involved with L/U on LEO's like
AO-51 because of the cost and complexity of having computer controlled
servos to track them just for a 10 - 20 minute window that you only get once
or twice a day depending on the LEO. Considering I work satellites mostly on
weekends the amount of use it would get wouldn't be worth it for me. I'd be
more likely to build a setup for working HEO's like AO-40 before building a
setup for L/U work on LEO's due to the simplicity, larger foot print, and
longer predictable window.

To be honest I would use FM on AO-51 as that is the most likely usage new
comers to satellites will most likely end up using. If you want to
demonstrate the raw rag chewing potential of satellites then demo a HEO like
AO-40.

Presumably that's because very few people have L- and S-band equipment.
I'm guessing that many people are - like me - put off by the prohibitive
cost and requirement for overcomplicated tracking systems.

Working V/U with a handheld antenna is much more fun than sitting
watching a computer twiddle servos and tune the radio for you.

for the 2m uplink mode? Using SSB or even CW on the 2m uplink would
make AO-51 different than the other V/U satellites, yet still provide
a challenge that more stations could take on than L-band or S-band -
and the variety that Drew mentioned that the AO-51 group wants to
 provide for Field Day weekend.

 Just a thought...

 Jacob,
They will work, but understand that you will be dealing with a VERY

[amsat-bb] Re: Fwd: [eu-amsat] HO-68 versus AO-51

2010-04-26 Thread Ron Overdrive
Well just something the original author needs to bear in mind is he's
comparing a satellite that was launched roughly 5 months ago (ho-68) to
another that was launched almost 6 years ago (AO-51) so of course there's
gonna be some significant differences among them being mission objectives.
HO-68 is the first Chinese AMSAT and China is going through an industrial
revolution of sorts at the moment so it makes sense to make their first
AMSAT as advanced as they can make it to add to their list of technological
achievements. Its really comparing Apples to Oranges.

Unfortunately being a new ham myself I can't share the same sentiments as
the author seems to be more interested in CW then Voice/Data which appears
to be really his only reason for claiming HO-68 is a superior satellite. At
the moment I don't know CW and my interest in it is a passive one since I'm
more interested in digital modes like PSK31. That and it doesn't help that
my only dual-band vhf/uhf rig that I use for working satellites is an HT
either.

 Subject: [eu-amsat] HO-68 versus AO-51

 HO-68 v AO-51 ??.

HO-68 versus AO-51 - and the university downlink only satellites - (aka the
 FM menagerie).

In my honest opinion it's a 'no contest' scenario - with HO-68 winning
 hands down.

The two main reasons for me making this claim are ...

 1) HO-68's superior orbit.

 2) It's multi-mode transponders.

On a typical European pass an HO-68 orbit has a footprint the covers from
Spain in the west to India in the east, Norway in the north to Sudan in the
south ... and all points in between.

Whereas AO-51 is FM only ... HO-68 has transponders for CW, SSB as well as
 FM.

HO-68 is (IMHO) easier to operate due to it needing less power to get into
the transponders, albeit, to really take advantage of that, a knowledge of
CW is required, which *STILL* shows it's great advantage as weak signal
 mode.

When all else fails ... switch to CW.

Igor, RW3XL has been operating cross-satellite with HO-68 to VO-52 and
 HO-68 to
AO-7 ... keying the up down buttons for CW since his keyer is on the blink.

For those wanting to learn, the 200mW beacon sends *SLOW* morse and it's
copyable on a piece of wet string wrapped round a rusty six inch nail.

I've proved this over and over on HO-68 at the beginning of passes when the
elevation is under 20 degrees and a SSB just can't make it - switch to CW -
 Q5 copy - (Domenico,I8CVS will endorse that).

I believe that HO-68 is becoming the experienced 'operator's' satellite
while AO-51 will remain the platform for the potential newcomer ... where
they can QRM eachother to their heart's content ... more power Egon ... MORE
POWER !!! ... (with due apologies to the Hollywood film 'Frankenstein').

For me at least, HO-68 has brought the fun back into amateur satellite
operating, particularly on CW ... akin to RS-10, the most popular satellite
ever - (judged by the amount of users) - after the veritable old AO-7.

While everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, operating FM on a
satellite is about as much fun for me as watching paint dry and is, in my
opinion, the worst possible way to introduce a potential newcomer to amateur
 satellites. My EU-Amsat co-founder, SV1BSX
(SK) first used the word 'zoo' to describe the AO-51 standard of operating.

There ought to be a sign on the microphone ... PLEASE DON'T FEED THE
 ANIMALS.
