I'd appreciate any info on who repairs Landwehr preamps (VHF and UHF). Resurrecting mine from 1990 and they are both dead. HamTV Bulletin #13 April 14, 2014 Ham Video Commissioning completed The final Ham Video Commissioning Pass was performed flawlessly Sunday April 13 at 18.23 UTC. ISS Commander Koichi Wakata operated OR4ISS while ground stations G4KLB, F6DZP, IK1SLD and KI (Livorno) received the signals and streamed the video over the BATC server. The DATV signal was received for about 6 minutes. Commander Wakata congratulated ARISS for this achievement and answered a series of questions, prepared in the manner of a school contact. He also proceeded to a microgravity experiment. The recorded video of this historical transmission is available at: http://www.vivadatv.org/viewtopic.php?f=66t=317http://www.vivadatv.org/viewtopic.php?f=66t=317 and also on YouTube http://youtu.be/EpFzbKvK1pkhttp://youtu.be/EpFzbKvK1pk Congratulations to the Ham Video team for this outstanding performance. Hi Joe, the link below is for a coax calculator. its self discribatory, it will let you see the difference the various coax's have agains each other vs freq. The hight you go in Freq, the lossier the cables are. Two good barometers are to run comparisons on 2m and 400 mhz. ie. 144, and 432 Mhz, 100ft runs leave the 100 watt input the same and watch the watts out !. that will give you a really good idea of cable loss. now you can see why I recommended some RG213 over the RG58 you're running now. you are losing over 50% of your power to the cable loss. that's way to costly for operation performance. We all cut corners but there are some things not to cut and running a good not necessarily the best feed lines out there is a good thing to get in the habit of. and a good cable will last you your lifetime almost. Ok have fun with the calculator. de Ellis WA1RKS http://www.saarsham.net/coax.html ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? [amsat-bb] Re: Subject: Was, Is there anyway to get a linear transponder on the ISS?
Notwithstanding the difficulties and complexities of getting something up to and installed on the ISS, why would we want to put an obsolete radio up there anyway? Seems to me that a TM-D710 would be a much better replacement for the D700. For one thing, it has a built in cooling fan which should take care of the cooling concerns. It's obviously not a linear transponder, but then most hams don't have the equipment to use one anyway while most of us have VHF and UHF FM equipment. Coupled with a laptop, it could be used for WL2K comms, APRS and straight up packet in addition to plain old voice comms. Jeff Moore -- KE7ACY On 6/2/2013 6:23 PM, K5VOU wrote: Thanks for all the input regarding the FM 'repeater' on the ISS. Further research into the issues has enlightened me on the machinations of getting things done on the ISS and the complicated processes of working with such varied national interests. It is obviously way above my pay grade and with these comments I sadly end the quest with a feeling of not going anywhere. The Kenwood TM-D700 portion of the Phase 2 Hardware system is apparently overheating. Possibly because of a lack of airflow over the heat sinks. Possibly because when it is made available, the duty cycle rises to near 100% and the unit consumes too much power from the ISS power budget. Since the other parts of the Phase 2 system are fulfilling the needs of the ISS and NASA agenda, there are no resources available to correct the problems with the TM-D700. Indeed, replacing it with a linear transponder of equal bandwidth and much reduced power consumption may be a much better solution but there do not appear to be any benefits to the ARISS program to drive the solution. There was a mention in the paper produced circa 2002-3 of a third phase of the ARISS hardware system to be mounted outside but no mention of such a program since then has been located. Should others want to pursue a program of getting a linear transponder mounted on the outside of the ISS, I wish you luck and refer you to the document; Amateur Radio on the International Space Station - Phase 2 Hardware System by Frank H. Bauer, KA3HDO, Lou McFadin, W5DID, Bob Bruniga, WB4APR, and Hiroto Watarikawa. Sergej Samburov, RV3DR was also listed but this call sign now returns as belonging to Energia in Russia. The document was found at http://www.ariss-eu.org/phase_2_document.pdf on the internet. Frank is a new Amsat VP in this area, Bob is a participant in this list and Lou is still around too I think. Sorry to hear AO-27 isn't working, and that SO-50 is the only FM satellite that's operational at the moment. Looks like I decided to get into this aspect of the hobby a little late, and missed out on the other decayed satellites, and all the great contacts to Col. Wheelock back when he was on the ISS. I hope the near future will bring back into space some new FM satellites, and I will look into the SSB Satellites soon. Any input on running a Yaesu FT 817nd or an 857d on the SSB satellites? I can use the Arrow only with low power because of the duplexer unless I get a different duplexer that can handle more power or do without it completely. Sand it to shiny copper and lay on some paste flux. Even then, you'll need a lot of heat. Make sure the solder flows on, and not just globs on. I have not built a Moxon but I have dealt with soldering heavy wire. Let us know how they work out for you, after they're up. I've been slowly working on building double Moxon's for 440 and 2 meters both using #6 copper wire and trying to measure very carefully. Another list serve participant suggested I tried these as they have worked well for him and better than other stationary antennas he has tried. Next up for me when I have time is to try your Quadrifilars and I have another article or two on construction suggestions. My one big question is how did you get the #6 wire to solder? Friends, Unbeknown to me, my computer was compromised with a Trojan. I have now run a complete scan for viruses and Trojans. The computer is now clean. I apologise for any inconvenience caused - even though it really isn't my fault. I have *Always* had a recommended antivirus program installed. I now have Spybot installed permantently as well. It *DID* show and delete the problem. Again, my apologies for any inconvenience. 73 John. la2...@amsat.org ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Cori and I will be on the DN74 / DN75 grid line for the AO27 pass that switches to VOX at about 18/1947Z. This is another line that doesn't quite fall exactly on the state line. In this case, the grid line at 45N appears to be about 50 feet inside the Wyoming line so contacts will count only for that state. (WC7V has Montana pretty well represented anyway.) The HO68 sked starting tomorrow hasn't been published yet, so I'll try to be on from DN74 on VO52 during its 18/1619Z pass as we head for the line. We'll head for DN64 and DN63 after the AO27 pass following the 1947Z pass. 73 for now, Jim, ND9M / VQ9JC Gillette WY / Campbell Co. / DN74 ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. I came upon an interesting comment about batteries at the web blog of Cosmonaut Maxim Suarev which is in English at Russia Today: http://rt.com/About_Us/Blogs/orbital-log/2010-02-09.html The blog was from someone working on a Peruvian cubesat called CHASQUI-1. The specific question is: Lizeth Bodero 10 February, 2010, 14:24 hi!! I'm a science student and here in my University we are building a nanosatellite named Chasqui. We hope to launch it this year but there's a problem with the batteries since we wanted to use lithium polymer batteries and we don't know if those are allowed by the Russian Federal Spacial Agency. Do you have any suggestion about that? thank you so much Someone on the group might have the answer? Looks like they have already identified a launch vehicle... There are wiki entries and a web page for CHASQUI-1, although the onboard comms system isn't described here is a description of the ground station: http://www.chasqui.uni.edu.pe/html/eng/ground-station.html Frequency bands: VHF (144 - 146 MHz.) and UHF (435 - 438 MHz.) Operating Mode: Half duplex Transmitting power: 50 W. Modulation: AFSK Link Speed Downlink: 1200 bps. and 9600 bps. Link speed increase: Between 1200 bps. and 9600 bps. 73 de andy g0sfj ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member?
