I was having a really good pass gpong from my NW-SE and I had copied 6
frames of Telemetry and 5 frames of KURSK data when the bird just went
silent. It never came back during this pass. It was the 08-27-2011
0241 UTC pass over Lake Erie. I am curious if anyone has heard it since
than. That is probably the best I have copied it since day one. The
frames where forwarded. The MET was 55' 33". Bat Voltage = 35.668; Bat
Current = -16 ma. I've never heard it just go silent like that and not
come back up.

I wanted to let W6IHG that I did hear him through ARISSat-1 during my
1817 UTC pass. I have an audio recording of that pass. I believe I
also heard WB2OQQ. There was also a station sending SSTV through the
transponder but the station was not using Doppler. He went right out of
the bandpass. I tried to follow but could not.

I noticed that even though ARISSat-1 was in full sunlight, it went into
Low Power mode. I was able to get a pretty decent SSTV copy during that
pass, also. I am trying to determine what I am going to do when it
terminates. It has taken up a good portion of my operating since August
4th. HI HI.

There is another pass coming up in 5 mins (1951UTC). It will be a 13
degree pass so that should be pretty decent also.

I was able to copy ARISSat-1 during three passes today but as was
mentioned in a previous bulletin, the signal seems much weaker, and I
have had to correct the frequency often which means the keps are not up
to date although I downloaded them this morning. I just downloaded them
again a few minutes ago and noticed a big change. She was also in Low
Power mode in full sunlight again. I did work CW through her and heard
my signal on the downlink but it was weak and warblely (if that is a
word). I am thinking it is tumbling quite a bit. I am beginning to
believe that the predictions for de-orbit on the 30th might be accurate.

I must say it has been fun and I hope we have all learned lessons from
the experience. I'll keep monitoring until it is confirmed that
de-orbit has occurred. I am looking forward to Hamcation in February so
I can sit and chat (debrief) with all the fine people who put her up there.

Hello to the group:

Have been reading about the satellite and BPSK 1000,but then have a little
doubt on two subjects:

1- The BPSK 1000 part, can be decoded on FM, SSB or a combination of both?

2- In the same line, if one TX to it on U/V, what is the mode to use?
70cmUSB/2mLSB, 70cmLSB/2mUSB and/or 70SSB/2mFM?

Thanks in advance.

2011-02-11 Thread Greg D.

Nice pass just now, started 07:53z (about local midnight). Off for a few
minutes, then I heard the voice transmission, then off, then SSTV. Full
quieting with my 8 element beam and a preamp. The SSTV picture was not so
great, as it was near the end of the pass, and I had disabled my Az tracking
before the antenna would have needed to swing past 0-degrees. I usually get
better results being not quite aimed right, than losing 60 seconds of tracking
while it swings clear around.

How long will it be in this mode? I didn't get much chance to tune around the
passband to see if anything else was going on.

since Yuri Gagarin flight has been postponed from Wednesday space walk. . I
ASSUME they are talking about ARISSat 1. No explanation was given as to why it
has been delayed... Anyone have any other information ?

[amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 test

2011-02-12 Thread Rocky Jones

Interesting comments:

"During the test, RSC-Energia decided to keep the transmitter on
until Friday morning. "

Hmmm curious about a few things but... what impact this "test" has had on
battery life, considering the vehicle now "sits" until at least July...

[amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 - Batteries

2011-02-14 Thread Clint Bradford
The Russians didn't think ARISSat-1's batteries would last from Feb 16 to April
12 - April 12 being the anniversary of Gagarin's historic 1961 flight.

Kedr to Be Switched on in the ISS on April 12

15.02.2011

"Russian cosmonauts Dmitry Kondratiev and Oleg Skripochka won’t launch small
spacecraft Kedr during their spacewalk scheduled for Feb.16, Roscosmos Stats
Secretary, Deputy Head Vitaly Davydov told news media.
According to him, the idea is to switch on Kedr inside the ISS on April 12, in
order to commemorate the jubilee of Yury Gagarin’s mission. Weak batteries of
the RF-amateur satellite won’t let it fly and transmit signals until this date,
if the satellite is launched on Feb. 16.

"Small spacecraft Kedr developed under the RadioSkaf experiment bears the name
adopted by Yu.A. Gagarin call sign in his historical flight, namely Kedr. The
satellite’s signal will be transmitted at radio amateur frequency of 145.95
MHz. Kedr has radio amateur call sign RS1S.

"RadioSkaf is implemented in the framework of UNESCO’s student space education
program."

[amsat-bb] ARISsat-1 Setup

2011-04-11 Thread Armando Mercado
Hello,
http://www.nasa.gov/directorates/somd/reports/iss_reports/index.html
reports ARISsat-1 has been setup...

Dmitri performed hardware setup and test activation of the TEKh-43 Radioskaf-B
"Kedr" microsatellite in the MRM2 Poisk module, connecting it to an 825M3 Orlan
battery and checking out its 430 MHz transmitter from the satellite control
panel. [The small satellite was named Kedr in honor of the call sign of Yuri
Gagarin. It will be activated onboard the station tomorrow, April 12, i.e.,
Cosmonautics Day, when the world celebrates the anniversaries of the first
human flight into space and the first Space Shuttle flight. Development,
manufacturing and launch of Kedr is the first phase in Russia's integrated
program approved by UNESCO, with the goal to create and operate mini-satellites
with a mass less than 100 kg by combined efforts of students across the world.
Once Kedr is activated, it will transmit 25 greetings in 15 languages, pictures
of Earth, and telemetry data from science hardware and support systems, as well
as historical audio recordings. 50 years after Gagarin's fl!
ight all ham radio operators across the world thus will have a unique
opportunity to hear the famous "Poyekhali" (Let's Go!) from Earth orbit.]

The part of connecting it to an Orlan battery and 430MHz transmitter has me
confused...

Hopefull to hear something.

[amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 update

2011-04-11 Thread Gould Smith
As Armando, N8IGJ noted in his earlier email, NASA as published an update of
today's activities ( it can be found at
:http://www.nasa.gov/directorates/somd/reports/iss_reports/index.html)
.Contained this document is a section about ARISSat

Dmitri performed hardware setup and test activation of the TEKh-43 Radioskaf-B
"Kedr" microsatellite in the MRM2 Poisk module, connecting it to an 825M3 Orlan
battery and checking out its 430 MHz transmitter from the satellite control

opportunity to hear the famous "Poyekhali" (Let's Go!) from Earth orbit.]

Some clarifications:
ARISSat-1, RadioSkaf-V, RadioSkaf-B, Kedr are all names for the same satellite.
It is doubtful that the satellite will transmit pictures of earth as it is
inside the ISS.
ARISSat-1 only transmits on 2M. The ARISS team has arranged for the TM-D700
transceiver aboard the ISS to also transmit the ARISSat signals on 437.55 MHz.
There are 24 different messages that will transmit in a sequence, one of which
is the Gagarin-ground station conversation.
The crew operates on UTC time and sleeps from 2130Z - 0600Z usually so probably
no activity until after 0600Z
The 12 April schedule found at
http://www.nasa.gov/pdf/534825main_041211_tl.pdf doesn't specifically list an
activity to turn on ARISsat-1
Keep listening, we'll let you know more as we know more.

[amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 battery.

2011-04-13 Thread G0MRF

Hi Nitin / Vince.

Although the non appearance of ARISSat-1 has been a little disappointing,
in the overall scheme of things we are still looking at a major AMSAT
achievement here. There is after all a satellite awaiting 'launch' on the ISS.
We know it's a success because so many people have named it and want it to be
identified as belonging to them. We even have some working telemetry
decoding software 3 months ahead of launch. - Yipee.

I'm really not sure what all the confusion over the last few days tells
us. Prepared press releases full of mistakes, a complete lack of preperation
following the long period of testing which left the battery delpleted. No
plan B to charge it during the sleep period - One wonders if the switches
were even returned to the correct positions when it was last turned off.

Despite a turbulent last few days, the main event is yet to come and as
long as the designers have anticipated it being deployed with a completely
flat battery, then we can all sit back and wait for July more prepared from
this rehearsal than we would have been.

That's what I was thinking because someone should have heard it by
now. Maybe in two months pass the time since it should launched, even
though it was off there might have been a small drain on the batteries and
now they're in a discharge state.

[amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 update

2011-04-21 Thread G0MRF
This is an update on the ARISSat activities.
We had a telecon with the ARISSat team in Russia. Here is the situation as
described by them. The Russian suit battery that was intended to be used
on ARISSat was used during testing both on the ground and onboard ISS when
it first arrived. When it was tested prior to the planned April 12
operation, it was discovered that the battery was low on charge.
The suit battery's are specified for only five cycles of charge.
It was decided to not recharge the battery at this time in order to keep
the number of cycles as low as possible and thus saving the battery for the
actual mission. That deployment is currently scheduled for July 26. We are
still trying to get more information on the storage status and the battery
health from the Russian team. We will keep you informed as we prepare for
the eventual deployment of ARISSat.

[amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 test

2011-07-30 Thread Gould Smith
The ARISSat-1/Kedr transmission test is scheduled to begin at 1915Z. There
is a 15 minute transmission delay, so don't expect to receive any signals
until 1930Z. The satellite transmissions will be in low power mode, which
means that there are no transmissions for 2 minutes (seems like a long time
when you are listening for a signal) and about 45 seconds On, then off again
for 2 minutes. So, during an average 8 minute pass you will probably only
hear 2-3 transmissions periods. FM at 145.95 MHz, CW at 145.919 MHz, BPSK at
145.920 MHz.

[amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 02.55

2011-08-03 Thread g0mrf

Good signals from ARISSat-1 with transistion from eclipse to sunlight here
this morning.

Apx. 6 second spin period puts deep nulls in transmitted signal. - Not sure if
this is due to linear polarisation of my receive antenna or blockage from
spacecraft.
Managed to capture just 3 tlm frames and '2 Kursk frames' . (mission time
29997-30018) However, software forwarded zero frames via internet (?).

If recording to a .wav file, CW positioned to be 500Hz seems to work well.

Battery voltage around 33V status - charging.

Thanks

[amsat-bb] Arissat-1 Commanding?

2011-08-05 Thread Burns Fisher
I saw on one of the NASA announcements that the snarffled 70cm antenna would
mean no commanding of the bird. (This was probably before it was realized
that that receive actually seems to work). But the question I have is
whether there IS some commanding of the bird possible. I guess you have to
be able to turn it off to satisfy the FCC (true?) but can other things be
done? I assume/home that the command channel is encrypted, so disclosing
its existance is not compromising the bird.

[amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 Telemetry

2011-08-13 Thread Greg D.

Hi all,

Got a partial verbal telemetry this 04:08z pass (and a perfect preloaded SSTV).

I think it said that the internal temperature was 45c. Isn't that a bit toasty?
The next parameter I thought I heard 65, whatever it represents.
Battery voltage was 36.09v, current -4ma.

The satellite was in low power mode (40 seconds on, 2 min off), though I
believe it was still in sunlight until right at the end of the pass.

Sorry for the partial, but someone was on the phone and kept talking while I
was trying to listen...

Looking at the battery voltage from deployment on...

Up until Aug 11, the battery seems to be deteriorating
"normally" with a slight downtrend in the max voltage
as expected. But on Aug 11, the battery voltage
suddenly rises up to 36 V max and the satellite
has started resetting in eclipse.

I think the explanation is that the battery experienced a
significant event on Aug 11 where it lost the electrolyte
in one or more cells. If this is true, the bad news is
that it will no longer hold a charge and will not operate
in eclipse any more.

But the good news is that without electrolyte,
it would also stop dendrite growth that causes
the eventual battery short circuit.

In our ground testing, our test battery failed in the
usual way with the battery load increasing until the
solar panels could not drive the power bus high enough to
run the satellite. But interestingly, several cells also
cracked and dumped their electrolyte during this testing.

If a cell on the flight battery cracked and dumped its
electrolyte BEFORE the shorts were formed, it should
stay that way and the satellite may very well continue
to operate in the sun until it starts to re-enter. We just
need some luck to avoid a bad solar angle that would cause a
reset in sunlight.

Keep your fingers crossed! :)

73,
Tony AA2TX

[amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 Telemetry

2011-08-14 Thread Greg D.

I caught two sets of voice telemetry on the 04:44z pass over Northern
California:

MET = 64

IHU temp = 41c

Control panel temp = 42c

Battery voltage = 35.73v

Current = -20ma

MET =69

IHU temp = 40c

Control panel temp = 42c

Battery voltage = 35.74v

Current = +0ma

Looks like the temperature situation has improved considerably.

I also heard the "secret word", but it was different than the last time (a few
days ago). Is there more than one per language (both were in English)?

[amsat-bb] ARISSAT-1 report

2011-08-15 Thread g.shirville

Hi All,

Just popped outside from the IARU Region 1 Conference meeting to catch an
ARISSAT pass.

Good signals with an Arrow and a FCD and also using a G0MRF prototype filter
amplifier with 5v being supplied by the Dongle. (Thanks David for the loan)

Voice telemetry reported MET of 41 mins - which corresponds very well to
when it left eclipse over the Pacific. Battery volts 35.74 and current -4ma

The signal had no fading but several occasional ~ 100 msec breaks in
transmission were noted.

[amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 battery

2011-08-29 Thread g0mrf

Hi all.
The ARISSat team seem to have reached the conclusion that the Silver Zinc
battery technology is not really suited for
an orbiting satellite with a 55 / 35 minute charge and discharge cycle. I
wonder if a couple of small
Lithium polymer battery packs would be a suitable replacement for ARISSat-2 ? I
note that there are safety issues with Li-ion technology,
but there are some small battery packs of 10Whr / 20Whr 30Whr modules which
have NASA approval for manned space flight.
>From the odd snippet of information on the power required during eclipse (is
>it 7 Watts for 35 minutes) it looks like 20-25% depth of discharge for the
>20Whr battery pack. That's probably OK for a 9 month mission ??

Thanks

[amsat-bb] Arissat-1 reentry?

2012-01-03 Thread David

Hello everybody:

This is David EA4SG.

Just a moment ago at 16:54 UTC while the Arissat-1 was over the vertical
of Madrid, I was listening to the SAT and it stopped/interrumped
suddenly its transmissions while it was still in a theorical "sunny or
iluminated area". Not sure if it was the final re-entry but It could be.
So I decided to leave this info here. The last sent voice message sent
was the italian one and at the end of the secret word, it stopped.

A moment before, I was able to record around 40 seconds of CW telemetry
in 145.919 Khz but very poor signal/noise rate.

[amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 R.I.P.

2012-01-04 Thread n0jy
Applause and accolades to the ARISSat-1 Team, for the tremendous amount of
fun, excitement, opportunities and activity that ARISSat-1 provided!

I got hooked at launch, listening/watching on the internet even as I was
also on HF that day conducting an exercise with the local and state
R.A.C.E.S. teams and the local nuclear power plant during the launch. I
started tracking and gathering telemetry a few days later and dedicated a
PC and my sat station to automated telemetry gathering 24/7. I split off
the 2M signal to my FT-817 and captured hundreds of amazing SSTV pictures.
I enjoyed watching the telemetry decoding program on my PC showing the
live readings. I followed especially in the last days, on the
arissattlm.org web site.
Much of this excitement I shared with my local ham radio groups in
meetings and on the air, with local children and non-hams, and even in
Colombia over Christmas I engaged some of the family with listening for
the "secret word" in Spanish.
A few attempts were made when I had time, to make contacts through the
transponder. I heard myself and others, and had a part of a QSO... but
never got that complete QSO. I became so engaged with the telemetry that
near the end, I wrestled with the decision to try a transponder contact or
to keep copying telemetry in hopes of the "last telemetry" award!

Thank you very much, all who made ARISSat-1 possible. Your work was very
fruitful indeed.

I look forward to the Fox family and hope that we can keep up the
enthusiasm and support necessary to stay on the air in space!

[amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 startup sequence

2011-04-10 Thread Gould Smith
FYI

The task for the cosmonauts to turn on ARISSat-1 is scheduled to begin at 1430
UTC on April 11. That means that they will begin the procedure of getting the
satellite, moving the antenna coax, adjusting the antenna switches in the ISS,
then flipping the three switches on the satellite control panel to ON. These
switches and the circuitry are designed to keep the satellite from transmitting
for 15 minutes after all three switches are in the On position. This was done
so as not to pose any hazard to the cosmonauts during the EVA to deploy the
satellite.

Given all these activities I suspect that there will be no transmissions until
around 1500 UTC. According to my tracking software this puts the first coverage
area in the southeastern Pacific. Other than ships, southern South America
should be the first area to hear the
ARISSat-1/RadioSkaf-V signals.

The satellite will be in Low Power mode, 40-60 seconds ON and 2 minutes OFF. An
average 8 minute pass will only have about three transmission periods and two
minutes can seem very long when waiting for a signal to appear. Be patient
The varying ON times occur because when the On timer expires the current FM
transmission item (ID, telemetry, greeting, SSTV) will finish before the
transmitter shuts off.

Enjoy the event in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of man's first trip into
space. Yuri Gagarin make the historic trip on 12 April 1961.

[amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 tlm decoder.

2011-04-11 Thread G0MRF
Hi all.

I have a minor (probably operator error) with the TLM software.

Is there a way to get the audio to feed through to the PC speakers? I've
tried Spectran and Spectraview without problem, but the ARISSat software
does not appear to send audio out on my system. I cant hear the radio as I
have a jack in the headphone socket which mutes the radio's speaker.

The software is working. I can decode the CW callsign and locator of a 2m
beacon and the level is controlled nicely with the windows 'microphone'
record level.

It's not muted
It's got the correct input selected and the gain turned up.

But.no audio out...so I'm just setting the frequency by visually
putting the signal in the right place.

3) If it is no longer within the ISS, is it functional? (can I start
listening)

Thanks,

Tyler
