AO-51 remains non-operational. We still try to restart her occasionally, in case a cell opens, but that isn't likely. Here's the original announcement from 2+ years ago: http://amsat.org/pipermail/ans/2011/000571.html The good news is at least two Fox-1 sats will launch next year, both carrying Mode B FM repeaters, as well as at least one camera and several university experiments. [amsat-bb] AO-51-SO-50
I remember someone saying something about the old earlybird AO-51 passess and that now all we have at night is SO-50... I was thinking of staying up late this weekend to see if there might be some earlybirds on the 50??? I do not have all that great a station and no rotator as of yet but if there is some activity that would be great, considering the time difference I might meet some new grids/people and if not I always enjoy saying hello to those I have worked many times before! :) Kevin KF7MYK ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] AO-51 End of Mission
If I may, in name of the Amateur Radio Satellite followers here in Puerto Rico, say thanks for the team and their efforts for maintaining as long as possible the operation of ECHO, nice little satellite which you know was on AOS by the fading of the noise. With it I could work from Brazil up to Canada withh all the limitations of a mountain to my north, even worked Drew on his Caribbean ventures. Field Days, JOTAS, special events and all, it gave us the taste to work fellow hams and different grids. And, I rarely used more than 1/2 watt for the QSO's. [amsat-bb] AO-51 end of mission
It is with a heavy heart I report that AO-51 has ceased transmission and is not responding to commands. The last telemetry data indicated that the third of six batteries was approaching failure to short, and observations indicate the voltage from three cells is insufficient to power the UHF transmitters. The IHU may continue to be operative. Initial tests with the S band transmitter were also not positive, although more attempts are in order. We have tried leaving the satellite in an expected state where if voltages climb high enough, the 435.150 transmitter may possibly be heard. The command team will regularly attempt communications with the satellite over the coming months (and years). There is always the possibility that a cell will open and we could once again talk to our friend while illuminated. Thanks to all who helped fund, design, build, launch, command, and operate AO-51. It's 7 year mission has been extraordinary. Please support AMSAT's Fox-1 project, and other AMSAT projects worldwide with your time and money. I plan on testing the S band transmitter on AO-51 on the 2010Z AO-51 pass over the east coast today, and would like some volunteers to help listen for the transmitter. There have been a few comments about having the control operators do this or that. Are you guys not listening or what. The thing has been on its last legs all summer after the last episode with the batteries and they had enough trouble trying to keep it going then. Seriously people, get a grip. You really think they are going to try and activate other things when they can barely keep it going as is. Did you not see the post about us being lucky its even turning back on after eclipse, enjoy it while it lasts??? Some peoples kids I swear. [amsat-bb] AO-51 current status
Sometime between 1815 and 1945Z today, AO-51's IHU crashed. This happened after a few days of intermittent and unpredictable operation. Mark N8MH and I reset the satellite and started the repeater back up around ~2030Z, and lowered the output power to about 300 milliwatts. Battery voltage was low, around 4.9v, with cell 1 less than 1 volt. This is very troublesome, as the impending third cell failure will likely end our continuing operations, particularly if it fails shorted as the others have. We've also observed the transmitters cutting off around 4.7 to 4.6 volts prior to the last reset, in eclipse. We'll do what we can, but her days are short. Let me ask once again for more reports, especially from the US operators, to the oscar.dcarr.org webpage. The command stations monitor this for changes in the operation of AO-51, and while worldwide participation is good, few US operators post to it. Please support the several satellite programs worldwide, such as AMSAT-Fox, AMSAT-UK FunCube and UKCube, AMSAT-ZL Kiwisat, AMSAT-DL P3E, and others. 73, Drew KO4MA AMSAT-NA VP Operations ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] AO-51 Signal Strength
AO-51 is extremely weak now. Normally AO-51 would produce a signal in excess of .6 uV at the receiver in the shack. This is from a 40el KLM with a 20' 9913 pigtail and 50' of 7/8 Heliax. The maximum signal strength on the 2113z 24Nov pass (38 degree elevation) was only .22uV. It is down about 7 or 8 db from just a few days ago. As a comparison, a SO-50 pass at 2151z (6 degree max) produced .25 uV. SO-50 continues to fade severely whereas AO-51 does not exhibit that fading on Left Hand Circular. AO51 was in the sun for about 40 minutes before my AOS. The angle might not have been that great but it wasn't that close to darkness. It's getting harder to hear AO-51 now. Many stations are heard but don't respond when called. Let's hope it stays on the air. The data buzz is now heard all the time where a week ago it only appeared a minute or two before eclipse on the morning passes and was never apparent on the afternoon passes. Even with the low power it's still a great satellite. Use it while it is still working. 73, John K8YSE ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. I am looking to flesh out some grids, and Michael (EI3GYB) and I are running out of things to talk about. With my handheld set-up I can work reliably down to 3 deg, which brings Europe west of central Germany, the UK, and western Scandinavia into the circle during the dinner-time-Europe passes. I usually hear KB1RVT on the passes as well (and his QRZ entry has a grid map that will give you a good idea of what is possible), so you could check off two grids. So far, Amsterdam is the farthest east I have worked. AO-27 kicks into data too early to be usable. [amsat-bb] AO-51 updates Re: Re: a051 frequencies
Hi John, Just yesterday I was trying to find time to type out a few AO-51 updates; this will be brief, but hopefully informative to those on the list. AO-51 is currently transmitting on 435.150 FM (LHCP) and using a 145.880 FM uplink. We expect the keep this configuration until futher notice. The power level is just under 1 watt (about 980 mW).The last restart of the satellite was something like 18 days ago!! This stretch of uninterrupted service has been great, and really just good luck. Because of the failure of one cell of the six-cell battery, the bird remains in limp mode. By that I mean we are limited to simple commanding and configurations, because a software upload/execution has proven impossible due to the lower voltages resulting from the one dead cell. At least we can set power levels manually, change uplinks/downlinks, etc. But there is no telemetry collection/storage, no BBS, etc. There is a second cell in the battery that looks sick. We have no idea if it will be the next cell to go (probable though), nor what the result will be (if we lose another cell, limp mode probably will no longer be an option, and the mission might be considered over.). It might last a few days, a few months, or who knows...a few years? (doubtful). The current scenario of AO-51 is one reason we need to keep moving AMSAT and satellite development/building/launching moving forward!! We have learned a lot already with ARISSat-1, and FOX looks promising. AMSAT needs the support of its users now more than ever... A little speculation--recently we have been looked upon kindly by the battery shorting gods. It looks like AO-51's dead cell has failed closed/shorted--which is good for this bird; and it looks like maybe ARISSat-1's battery might be failing/have failed in an open fashion--which is good for this bird! 73! Aloha I plan to try the next pass of AO-51 (precluding lightening and rain). My window will be approx from 0325 local (0135Z) to about 0331L and will include Ca, Nv and a part of Utah. [amsat-bb] AO-51 coming out of eclipse over Hawaii
Hi Robert, KL7AA has a new ground station which is parking lot mobile. We deploy it occasionally and will mount it on the roof hopefully this summer. Ops N6SPP, N6PG and myself AL4S are available to qso either on the ground station or by arrow or elk handhelds. Looking forward to a KH6-KL7 sat-qso in the future. There is a link on my qrz.com webpage with a short movie on my first qso on the KL7AA ground station (Courtesy N6PG). Cheers, Rich Gillin - AL4S 907.884.1404 skype: rich.gillin Aloha Unless someone has set up a strange repeater there is absolutely no doubt AO51 was alive and well as she came out of eclipse moments ago. I was able to hear myself perfectly on the downlink (145.880 up and 435.150 down). Unfortunately, the footprint from here only touched the west coast. Aloha all Sorry for the delay re: the last 51 pass over Hawaii. Unfortunately, nothing heard. As I was in the field with the VX-7R I did not have duplex capabilities as yesterday with my ground station. However, I heard no quieting nor stations on the west coast. I assume AO-51 was off. [amsat-bb] AO-51 reports needed, especially from within eclipse
AO-51's computer has been running for over 5 hours now. We have left the satellite in repeater mode 145.88/435.15 for the time being, at over 2 watts. We are very surprised by this development to say the least. Without Whole Orbit Data we are flying a bit blind, so would really like to know what the satellite is doing in eclipse. I'm assuming the transmitter is cutting out, but who knows? Cell 3 is reporting 0.0 volts, so it's clear it has shorted completely. Please, everyone, everywhere, listen to 435.150 the next 24 hours and send your reports to me or to the -bb. [amsat-bb] ***AO-51 reports needed*** 27 May 2011
Hello AO-51 users, This afternoon 27 May 2011 AO-51 stayed ON for a full orbit. This caught both me and Drew KO4MA quite by surprise. It is completely unexpected. Had both of us not been there, we wouldn't have believed it KO4MA put it into repeater mode around 2000utc. When it came back over around 2145utc it was still up and in repeater mode!! We changed to digital mode to collect some telemetry and have left it in digital mode. **WE NEED REPORTS** in case it remains on next orbit (neither of us get another pass until tomorrow). You can listen on 435.150 MHz for the digital signal. IF you have 9600 baud packet and TLMEcho, you might be able to grab some telemetry that will be useful for us. Stay tuned! This might be a fluke, or it might be a good sign... Please send your email reports to the list and directly to us using our callsigns AT AMSAT.org. 73, Mark L. [amsat-bb] AO-51, on old friend.
Clint, AO-51 has been in many ways like a faithful old dog. Almost always there, and one you can trust with the kids. Every now and then it runs off for a few days, starts yapping and bothers the neighbors, or makes a mess on the rug. Still, just when you start to get annoyed, it gives you a big, wet kiss and all is forgiven. Sadly Dog Years and Satellite Years are about the same, and AO-51 is getting along. Others have lived longer, such as SO-50, and of course the magical AO-7, but few have given so much pleasure to so many with such simple equipment. Heck, even the critics have enjoyed grousing about Gridsats. I know I have. ;) When we finally lose an old dog, we mourn, but eventually we find a frisky new furry friend whom we learn to love, and eventually regard their quirks with affection, if not exactly delight. So it is with satellites. The Fox Project is getting into high gear, with a laundry list of lessons learned going into the engineering blender. Much like laws and sausage, the process is messy, but out will come a new, challenging satellite. We even have a new Fox PayPal contribution button on the AMSAT Fox page for you to exercise. ;) So lets remember AO-51 with affection, but look forward to the future. There is room there for LEO, MEO, HEO, and GSO. 73s, Alan WA4SCA -Original Message- From: amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org [mailto:amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org] On Behalf Of Clint Bradford Sent: Friday, May 06, 2011 4:50 PM To: AMSAT BB Subject: [amsat-bb] Re: AO-51 Data ... you can't ... shouldn't ... don't go out any buy anything just for this ... [amsat-bb] AO-51 - Requiem
... because since 2004 when AO-51 was operational a lot of Hams invested a lot of money to buy FM hand held equipments, Arrow antennas and ELK antennas to work ... Huh? 2004 was the year the Yaesu FT-60R was released. For under $200. The Kenwood TH-D7 was available - always a battery hog, but expensive due to its TNC/APRS capabilities. To say that we blew our collective wads on hand held equipment for working FM birds doesn't make sense to me. And I was working at the US' largest ham radio equipment dealer then: that phenomenon did not occur. ... if AO-51 will be in trouble for a long time and if a similar satellite will not replace it than a lot of money all around the world has been invested in FM equipment for very small ... The equipment purchased to work the FM sats covers the two most popular voice bands in the US, if not the planet. There's no handheld equipment that is exclusively made for sat work. ... The situation for the linear satellite users is very bad as well because HO-68 was only activated for a limited numbar of orbits ... I do not understand why some folks are so hot for '68. Its primary mission was never going to be amateur radio. It is run by the Chinese, who could really care less about what we would like to see happen with it. (Sorry, my wife has been to Tibet three times in the past five years, and has some really illustrative stories on how obscenely the Chinese treat some very peaceful people.) The Chinese projects have little or no interest for me. ... I don't have any information about the Fox project ... [amsat-bb] AO-51 troubles
All, We are having a difficult time trying to restore AO-51 to operation. Currently, the satellite will not retain the upload of the flight software across eclipse. The batteries are in very poor condition. We have a few more things to try, but with eclipses peaking around July at ~27 minutes, the long term situation is grim. There is a brief period around November where eclipses are as short as 16 minutes, but past that it is a long climb to 30 minutes or longer eclipses for many years. [amsat-bb] AO-51 reported down 27 April 2011 1200utc
Hi All, You know, I feel so guilty... After goodness knows how many years, I decided to try satellite work again. I read around, I took advice, and I purchased a nice new Kenwood TH-D72. It arrived a couple of weeks ago, so I took it with me on vacation, programmed the memories for Doppler and persuaded my XYL that what she really wanted to do each afternoon of her holiday was listen to AO-51 passes... That was fine. Using just the rubber duck, I copied every pass without trouble and no divorce proceedings ensued. She's very tolerant after all these years... We then returned home to find the shiny new Elk that I'd ordered from AMSAT-UK waiting for me. Eagerly, I screwed my courage to the sticking point and attempted to work the bird. (Without a great deal of success, I have to admit, hopefully because the only two chances I've had so far have been Sunday afternoons, when every amateur in Europe seems to be on..) But, horror of horrors! As soon as I pointed my Elk at AO-51, this BBS started filling up with messages about how the bird was going down all the while! I'm sorry, folks. I know it was my fault. I really meant to take my Evil Genius' Prototype Satellite Killing Death Ray out of circuit before transmitting. It was a honest mistake that could have happened to anybody I promise not to do it again... :-) 73 Nick MW0JGE P.S. Seriously, many thanks to all those who labour long and hard to make satellites available to the likes of me. It is much appreciated. --- Date: Wed, 27 Apr 2011 09:11:19 -0400 From: Mark L. [amsat-bb] AO-51 update 25 April 2011
Hi All, For now, it looks like the PL tone management (and changes to other settings) has helped to keep AO-51 running and supporting normal operations. We are now running around 475 mW of power out on 435.300 MHz. Over the last few days, some of you on the east coast of the U.S. have probably heard command stations downloading telemetry files on the 435.300 frequency. You can expect this to happen every few days; sometimes in the AM, sometimes in the PM. Because it's 9600 baud packet, it sounds like a carrier or open squelch with a SHH sound to it. If you hear that sound, there isn't much use in trying to uplink; it means we're collecting telemetry and the voice repeater is off for the moment. Wait for the SSSHHH sound to go away, and you'll know the voice repeater is active again. The current power budget makes it very hard to run both transmitters at the same time. Also, we are trying to keep the amount of commanding to a minimum, so using the single transmitter for both voice and telemetry is our current approach. We'll see how it goes. It does mean that it eats into voice operations a little, but the trade off is worth it-both for the short and long terms. In the meantime, keeping using our old bird when it's active! We don't want to take it for granted... 73 on behalf of the Command Team, Mark L. Hammond [N8MH] ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? [amsat-bb] AO-51 now requires 67 Hz PL tone; activity reports appreciated
Hello AO-51 users, As you have noticed, AO-51 has recently experienced a few shutdowns due to a low battery voltage trip. This is because of increasing eclipses (now at 20 mins per orbit and increasing), poor sun angles (still getting worse), and a weak battery. We are now using the 67 Hz PL tone required mode in order to turn the transmitter(s) OFF when not in use. The transmitter power is down to about 550 mW. We will continue adjusting various parameters, including transmitter power, trigger voltages, etc. in order to keep the battery temperatures reasonable. Keep in mind that the power management feature keeps the transmitter(s) OFF during eclipses, so you can't bring it up even with a PL tone while the satellite is in eclipse. Here is our current schedule, which will continue until further notice: AO-51 Schedule Mode V/U FM Voice Repeater (**67 Hz PL tone required**) Uplink: 145.880 MHz FM (Temporarily from 145.920) Downlink 435.300 MHz FM The AO-51 Command Team can use your help! 1-Please make activity reports to: http://oscar.dcarr.org/ This is very useful to all users. Until everyone knows that the 67 Hz tone is required, we might see some conflicting reports. 2-Please help spread the word about needing the 67 Hz tone! 73, -- Mark L. Hi All, This morning AO-51 was down on the early AM pass. I reset it, and decreased power out. One orbit later, it is apparently down again (another battery trip). There just isn't much left in the battery. It will this afternoon before one of us (command stations) can turn it back on. It is likely that we'll be going to PL tone activation soon. [amsat-bb] AO-51 apparently down
Hello All, We are receiving reports that AO-51 appears to be down. Hopefully one of us can get it going again this afternoon/evening. Eclipses are still getting longer, and the sun angle is getting worse, too. It probably has experienced a low battery trip (least we hope it's that simple...) [amsat-bb] AO-51 is Working Fine - My First Satellite QSO Ever!
I am so excited right now that I can barely type because I'm dancing a jig. AO-51 was working fine for the 2158Z, 4-13-2011 pass over my QTH (EM95md) during which I made my FIRST successful satellite QSO ever with K8YSE. Thank You K8YSE!! My apologies to K8YSE for getting a bit tongue-tied but I was so excited to hear him repeat my call sign back and ask for the QSL that I about swallowed the microphone :-) What makes it even better was the fact that I make it a point of recording the passes so I have an audio recording of my first AO-51 QSO. A big thanks to K6LCS (Clint) and his web site http://web.me.com/clintbradford/k6lcs/Home.html for all the tips and inspiration to give satellites a try. [amsat-bb] AO-51 uplink
The AO-51 repeater uplink was switched to 145.88 on the 2215 pass tonight. I realize there are multiple grid dxpeditions out and about, but that does not excuse some of the operating I heard tonight. If another station is in the middle of a QSO, stand by and let them finish. If you start to transmit and can't hear yourself, or you hear someone else in the downlink, stop transmitting and let them make the call. Finally, if you've worked that grid, or that station, or that country, how about taking a breather and letting someone else work it for a new one. 73, Drew KO4MA AMSAT VP Operations, and AO-51 Command Station ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] AO-51 - Idaho Repeater QRM on uplink?
Hi Everyone, I just thought I'd relay a bit of QRM I observed on AO-51 on this morning's 3/16/2011 1322z pass. The bird was totally quiet (just a nice carrier) for the first 5 minutes of the pass, but then it sounded like a repeater was getting into the sat uplink: 3/16 1327z: Connected, KD7QAF repeater. 3/16 1328z: KD7QAF repeater disconnected. 3/16 1328z: hey Stacy did I see you at the corner there by Wendys? 3/16 1330z: ...repeater in Middleton, Idaho. Pretty minor as far as QRM goes, but I just wanted to flag it up in case anyone knows of a KD7QAF repeater (call might have been KD7QAN?) that's got an output near 145.920. Might be worth letting them know they're getting into a sat. Also had a nice chat with Kerry WC7V on the same pass -- I'd forgotten how nice it is to work AO-51 on the early morning passes, it's a fantastic satellite!!! The morning passes aren't crowded at all, and '51 has such beautiful clear audio and great coverage. 73 de Dave KB5WIA / CM88 ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] AO-51 mode change 16 March 2120utc
Hi All, The power budget on AO-51 has really been stretched with both transmitters on, so we are now in single transmitter mode. That means quite a bit more power on 435.300 (the voice repeater), which is now around 1.3W or so. We'll be in this mode for a while (until further notice). You'll probably still hear the transmitter cycling OFF and ON around eclipse times. But most voice users will appreciate the stronger signals. 73, Mark L. [amsat-bb] AO-51 update 15 March 2011
Hi All, This is a quick note to let you know that eclipses are back for AO-51, and the length is increasing every day. Eclipses are now ;asting about 1-2 mins per pass, and it goes up pretty fast, gaining a minute every day or two. They will become rather long in the coming weeks/months (as long as 20 mins or more as I recall). Interested people should download and run DK3WN's Illum program to see what lies ahead for AO-51. We are still running power management; that means the transmitters will be OFF during eclipses (and probably right before, and soon after). The 435.300 transmitter is currently around 420 mW.The balancing (juggling??) act between sunlight, transmitter power, spacecraft temperature, and aging batteries continues... 73 on behalf of the command team, -- Mark L. [amsat-bb] AO-51 update - Thanks
I would like to say Thank You to all who manage AO-51 and all of the other Amateur Radio Satellites. I am new to satellites but not new to Amateur Radio. I recently celebrated 50 years as a Ham and my first contact via a satellite. My first contact via AO-51 brought back so many memories of my first contact as a Novice at 11 years old. When I mentioned that I was making my first contact via satellite, the users that afternoon welcomed me with open arms and I soon had stations calling me as a #2, a #3, and even a #4 contact. Everyone was so forgiving of my excitement with getting calls mixed up, unbelievable phonetics, and probably poor operating etiquette. There is nothing more exciting than to hear your call coming through the satellite after you get enough nerve to transmit. I listened for at least 100 passes before I dared hit the transmit switch. After all the listening, I still probably got it all mixed up. To me this was the ultimate stage fright! Thank you again to all involved. You gave me an opportunity to add another day in my life that I will never forget. What a great hobby we have 73's and 88's to all! James WA5AOO EL29 ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Hi, Today at about 15:00 pm i had a good pass of AO-51 but as usual i could'nt get in. I've tried during the whole pass to tx on the uplink frequencies moving a bit up and down but nothing to do, i did not get any response. I have tried with two TNC with a TINY-2 and with a TNC3S but had the same result. I saw in the queue for the whole pass OZ7SAT. I would like to know which is the correct frequency to TX. Unfortunately i do not know and also cannot find OZ7SAT's email address so if he read this message can please email me the correct frequency. [amsat-bb] AO-51 S-band // WIFI USB dongle as receiver?
Hello to the AMSAT brain trust. I am new to satellites and have a new person question: Is there any way to utilize a WIFI (2.4 GHZ, 13cm) USB dongle (with SMA ant. port) into a gain antenna, and successfully receive the S-band downlink from AO-51? This is a 13cm transceiver, but I suspect the answer is no. I already have a 24db gain dish, so I thought I would ask. Outside of WIFI, is there anything useful I can do with this dongle? [amsat-bb] AO-51 mode change 21 Feb 2011 2145utc
Hello All, Power up that L-band transmitter! AO-51 is about 2 days away from full sun. On-board temperatures are climbing, and it looks like we have just enough power to try to run both repeaters. It will take some tweaking of various power management parameters, and we'll see how things go. Right now 435.300 is at 420mW and 435.150 is at 300mW. Expect interruptions for telemetry collection by command stations; we'll try to keep the impact down to a minimum. You may also see the transmitters shutting off as we run right on the edge of the power budget. They should come back on when the batteries get a bit more juice in them. Both transmitters will be off during eclipses (which won't last much longer). We'll probably run dual repeaters until Sunday 27 Feb 2011. There is only about 3 weeks of full sun, then eclipses return. Dust off your S-band downconverters and antennas! We'll try to fit in some S-band activity before eclipses return (approx. 14 March or so). Question for the group. The AO-51 status on the AMSAT.org status page shows AO-51 to have a HF component that is operational. [amsat-bb] AO-51 SSB uplink
What if we tried using SSB on the uplink and FM on the downlink as an experiment sometime. If the uplink passband was left a little wide, several stations could still be intelligible at once, assuming they weren't on the exact same frequency, not to mention a cw signal or two off to the edges. The DSP between the ears can work pretty good at separating signals sometimes. Not a good mode for handheld operation but may be worth a try just to see how well it works.. [amsat-bb] AO-51
I have to agree with the others regarding the mis-use of AO-51. I don't get on there every pass but the other day was ridiculous. I thought it was CH19. There is absolutely no respect. Another gripe I have are those who work every pass and contact the same people each pass. That makes it very crowded. I would suggest listening for new calls and grid squares. As the satellites get more and more publicity, new people will be coming on board. Perhaps there operating skills are not as good as yours, but they have a right to make contacts. Check your log books and if you have worked someone, give another person a chance to work them. There were several new calls for me the other day but it was so bad that I just shut it down. Yes, check this image out: http://www.amsat.org/amsat/ftp/telemetry/ao51/2011WOD/Jan2011/Wd010300_during_solar_eclipse2.pdf You can see the normal eclipses of AO-51 every 100 mins (just over 14 times each day). Now, look right in the middle--see what is a double dip?? That a normal eclipse AND an extra one from the partial solar eclipse! Neat to see in telemetry...actually, look closer and you'll see there were around 2 or 3 double dips...peak eclipse was just before 0900utc that day, and that's where the biggest drop was observed. [amsat-bb] AO-51 S-Band antenna polarization
Does anyone know the polarization of the 2.4 GHz transmissions from AO-51. Are they circular? If so which polarity, RHCP or LHCP? Are they linear? If so is there a preferred receiving polarization? I have examined the AMSAT web site and many references on the Internet, but cannot seem to find the answer. Thanks, John WA4WDL AMSAT member 10211 ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] AO-51 Straight Key Night CW over FM
Please could someone explain better this mode for your use on Straight Key Night for AO-51: Uplink: 145.880 MHz CW (is this A1 ?) Downlink: 435.300 MHz CW over FM (is this A2 over FM ?) [amsat-bb] AO-51 pass 1230UTC 12/2
Hello all, I was attempting to make some contacts on the 1230UTC pass of AO-51 this morning, from the mobile on my way to work. We have a bit of a commuter roundtable on 2m in the morning and I invited some of the others to tune in to see what we could hear. The downlink was weak enough that the pass was at best barely workable, but right at the beginning I did have a good enough signal to copy that a station came back to my call. I didn't copy the call though, so it was not a contact but it appears that I was heard well enough on the uplink... so I would appreciate it if the station(s) who heard me would let me know what my uplink signal quality was, that I can determine whether it's worth it to try to work the bird again during a commute pass. If so maybe I'll consider a preamp in the mobile... ;-) And if the uplink was OK then perhaps on some future closer passes I'll have the opportunity to get some of my fellow commuters on the bird! [amsat-bb] AO-51 Mode L/S Mobile (thanks, guys)
Working satellites has always been a blast, especially when pushing the envelope in either technology, skill, or simply practicality. I was eager to work mode L/S mobile, not having worked that mode since I was in Darwin, NT (VK8OE, 1995)... and then I had a small dish and a TS-2000 in my SUV. It was easy, as I had full duplex, but there was nobody to talk to since the bird was mostly over the Indian Ocean! Now 5 years later and I am back in South Texas and missing that thrill from a you can't do that challenge. In my truck I have an FT-100. This rig worked mode V/S easily this past summer when I was visiting the US (I was P29OE then). The 2.4 gHz downlink was with an old 10-turn helix (my very first mode-S antenna, used to listen to Oscar-11), a TSI 3731 downconverter to 2 m and a Hamtronics 10 m downconverter. This arrangement allowed me to use the 2 m uplink from the FT-100, albeit in split mode (not full duplex). This mode was loud and easy. N5UXT, Angelo, was my first V/S contact, followed by N5AFV, Allen. Mode L/S required a little more hardware. I used an old MML trippler (varacter diode) I bought on ebay in the 90's for about $20. My uplink on 422.902 with about 10 W out didn't work well yesterday into my 2m/70cm vertical, so today I changed it out for a old (everything I have is old) home brew dual-band patch feed leftover from an AO-40 antenna (that same 18 DSS dish I took to Australia). Even though the downlink and uplink are both LHCP, they worked well enough on today's western pass of 20 degrees (from EL29) to make contact with K4YYL, AK5V, and N5UXT (again!). Thanks, guys. I know I was off frequency as I was guessing at the uplink frequency based on the downlink Doppler, dividing it in half then dividing that by 3... and all the while changing and hanging my arm out the truck window with a handful of gear! I appreciate you guys coming back to me. It's good to be home in Texas, it's good to work a satellite, and it's great to have such a frequncy agile bird to ! play with! I can't wait to get the shack set up this winter (the ARRL 10 m contest is just around the corner). 73, Jerry, K5OE ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author.
