[amsat-bb] satpc32 driving SDR radio version 2.2 with Omnirig and the funcube dongle
Hi all! Haven't had this much fun crashing software since the bad old days of Windows 95! SDR console somehow managed to attempt to divide by zero, at least that's what the bug report said. Armageddon hasn't happened. It also has a bad habit reminiscent of the old days: memory doesn't get released when the program terminates. Makes a restart necessary. Within the limits of my laptop, the combination of satpc32 driving SDR radio version 2.2/omnirig software with the FCD is mostly working. I've taken a page from Tom, W9KE's book and convinced both pieces of software that they are or are talking to a Kenwood ts-2000, by linking them with Virtual Serial Port Manager (free for hams from K5FR). A few bugs/features: When the cat function of satpc32 is engaged, the frequency that is selected and sent to radio (the funcube dongle) is the tx freq of the satellite, not the rx freq. I did read the help file. Fiddling with the setting 4 in the DivOptions.sqf doesn't help. Another one is that SDR radio will only reproduce the correct audio all the time on vfo b. I suspect that one or both can be worked around. Any ideas for a fix? I did play with adding /editing the cat file function from the front panel of satpc32. Didn't help. Tried selecting the automatic tx/rx change. Even tried to fake out satpc32 with a fake radio 2. No success. Manually edited the doppler.sqf for one satellite. That works. I'd like to use this with my other radios. Any ideas how to maintain compatibility without making too much of a mess changing between one configuration and another? I'd like to drive one more layer, a data/cw demodulation software package via virtual audio cable. Thought Simon was joking when he stated the pc requirements. I've got a 2.2 GHz core 2 duo with 2 gig of memory. This program sucks in the sides on the pc, then gets it to stumble and mumble at maximum sample rate. I doubt adding memory would help. Norm, I sent a document directly that should help you solve the SatPC32 configuration problems when using an SDR as your receiver. 73, Steve N9IP -- Steve Belter, s...@wintek.com On Aug 16, 2014, at 7:10 AM, Lizeth Norman normanliz...@gmail.com wrote: Hi all! [amsat-bb] SatPC32 with dual radios
I am trying to set up SatPC32 ver 12.8c unregistered with two FT-817s. My problem is that there is no CAT control on radio 1. Radio 2 works perfectly. Here is the setup: Radio 1, com port 2, delay 70 (tried 110 also) Radio 2, com port 5 Checked Atom. RX/TX change only (no other boxes checked but tried the others) As I change from sat to sat, Radio 2 will change freq and be steered but there is no response from Radio 1 If I remove Radio 2 (unplug the USB cable) and configure only a radio 1, there is no CAT control of radio 1. Computer is an HP Mini running Win7 Watching Device Manager, I can unplug either USB cable and see port 2 or port 5 come and go as I plug and unplug. I have switched radios then switched the CAT USB cables (they are FTDI). Still radio 1 does not change. Leaving the radios plugged in to the same computer, I exited SatPC32 and started HRD and tested for CAT operation on each radio one at a time and they both work. My question: Why no CAT for radio 1? Why no error message? Are there any other troubleshooting steps I can take? I have searched just about everywhere on-line and see no one else having this problem. I have found that many have success with the dual non-duplex transceivers configuration. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Larry W7DGP ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Re: [amsat-bb] SatPC32 with dual radios
Larry, So you need to match the Baud Rate on the radio and in the software by: 1. Looking in Menu Item 14 of the FT-817 (hold down the F Key for couple seconds to access, then rotate the left knob to change to item '14') 2. Matching the radio baud rate setting with the Baud Rate setting in SatPC32, ...On SatPC32, to get to the Baud Rate setting, you need to click the Model pull down in the Radio Setup Window, and switch that setting to Baudrate, then set the baud rate match the radio (best to do 38,400). Lastly, you may need to enable RTS +12V to power the USB Level Converter in your cable... Hope this Helps, Mike W4UOO On Fri, Aug 1, 2014 at 2:20 PM, Larry Ryan llryan...@gmail.com wrote: I am trying to set up SatPC32 ver 12.8c unregistered with two FT-817s. Re: [amsat-bb] SatPC32 question
Hi Jim, You are correct that you need to get the Keps in the same group to display them at the same time. They will eventually migrate, and you can request that from Tim Kelso on his web site to speed the process up. As for seeing them simultaneously, use Multitrack. First go to Satellites. On the Selected list, use the Show On/Off button to select the ones you want to see simultaneously. There will be an asterisk in front of the name. Exit back to the main page, and click the M in the upper left option panel. That will turn on Multitrack. 73s, Alan WA4SCA -Original Message- From: amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org [mailto:amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org] On Behalf Of Jim Heck Sent: Tuesday, July 29, 2014 11:54 AM To: amsat-bb@amsat.org Subject: [amsat-bb] SAT PC 32 question Hi Folks, I wish to track two satellites (actually FUNcube and UKube) at the same time. The TLM for one is in cubesats.txt and the other is in tle-new.txt. Is there a way of displaying them both in the main window at the same time? When I select one, the other is automatically removed from the list. I have tired copying the tles for one into the other's file, and this works OK, but it rather tedious! The problem might be resolved when the elements for Ukube are included in the cubesats.txt file, but they will appear as A and B on the main display (bottom right hand corner), whereas I would like to display them both on the map simultaneously. Is there a way of doing this? Thanks for any help 73s Jim G3WM ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? [amsat-bb] Satpc32 on a Mac
Some of you may have followed my trials and frustrations in trying to get an old XP driven Dell computer to live again. This computer is at a vacation house and I hated to spend money on a new computer. I run eggbeaters and an ft847 there. Here are outcomes, good and bad so far. 1) installed Ubuntu and was confident this would be the solution and it might still, however even the latest version of GPredict is buggy. I suspect the real culprit is Hamlib. 2) I installed Wine in Ubuntu in hopes of getting SatPC32 to run. This nearly worked but a few features didn't. For example I could not switch between modes using SatPC32 and I'm not certain that the CAT frequency adjust is working. Further investigation is required here. 3) I then discovered CrossOver which essentially is a commercial version of Wine for the Mac. Since I never leave home without a Mac laptop I decided to try a CrossOver demo. It took a while and some good Elmer support using the terminal program to configure the comm port, but once I solved that problem I found that the MacBook Pro running CrossOver will run SatPC32 perfectly! CrossOver is reasonably priced for your Mac. So that's where I ended up. I've not yet abandoned learning my way around Linux as it's been a good learning experience and I really appreciate the online support I received from fellow hams. 73 Rick W2JAZ ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Re: [amsat-bb] Satpc32 on a Mac
Cool! Thanks for the hint about CrossOver! I have not tried SatPC32 this way, but for many programs I have had very good luck using virtual machines. In particular, I have used VirtualBox on Ubuntu and find it to be pretty good. I also use Parallels on my Mac. Of course on a slow machine virtual machines are not so effective, and you still have to have a copy of Windows to install. 73, Burns W2BFJ On Mon, Jul 14, 2014 at 9:31 AM, Richard Lawn rjl...@gmail.com wrote: Some of you may have followed my trials and frustrations in trying to get an old XP driven Dell computer to live again. [amsat-bb] SatPC32 via Wine on Ubuntu
Some of you may have been following my attempts to continue to use a vacation house P4 that had been running XP (still is but its painful to watch and wait). I've been trying to familiarize myself with Linux using Ubunbtu. I got FlDigi to work fine and WSJTX as well as a good log program called CQrlog. I got stumped though with my satellite operation. I tried with helpd to get GPredict running but it (or Hamlib) was still buggy on the FT947 even with the latest version. I then, with help, installed Wine and dowloaded my favorite program - SatPC32. To my surprise it worksalmost. I don't seem to have Frequency adjustment at the radio by using the CAT controls in the software. I also can't change the mode to CW through the software. Is anyone using SatPC32 on a Linux platform? If so I'd like to connect tap your brain. 73 and hope to see you on the birds from my portable location at FN21 Rick W2JAZ ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Re: [amsat-bb] SatPC32 via Wine on Ubuntu
Hi Rick, Is the radio doing anything when you click on C- (going to C+) to enable the CAT system? If not, then you probably don't have the serial port side of things set up yet. When you boot the system, Linux will create a set of device files in the /dev directory. One of these, probably /dev/ttyS0, is your real serial port. Wine needs to know how to map the DOS / Windows Com ports to these device files, and does that with a set of links in ~/.wine/dosdevices. If you go to that directory and type ls -l, you should see something like this: lrwxrwxrwx 1 greg users 10 Dec 31 2011 com1 - /dev/ttyS0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 greg users 10 Dec 15 2013 com2 - /dev/ttyS1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 greg users 10 Dec 8 2013 com3 - /dev/ttyS2 lrwxrwxrwx 1 greg users 10 Dec 8 2013 com4 - /dev/ttyS3 If those files don't exist, you can create them with the command: ln -l /dev/ttyS0 com1 Restart SatPC32 and see if that gets some activity out of the radio. If the files do exist (and SatPC32 is configured to use the right one), then it might be that your user permissions don't allow you to access the serial ports. You can either run the program as root (not recommended), or change your user permissions to include dialout or UUCP in the list of groups (I forget which is the right one). Good luck, Greg KO6TH Richard Lawn wrote: Some of you may have been following my attempts to continue to use a vacation house P4 that had been running XP (still is but its painful to watch and wait). Hi Bob, I experience similar issues lately ALT-F4 and windows task manager can help to prevent from rebooting your PC. In my case this behaviour occurs when object ID's are changed or removed from the kepler input files. Lately we had Kicksat, Phonesat and other cubesats that burned up in the atmosphere and therefor where removed from the DB. To solve the issue I check and edit the satellite group files and remove them by hand. Some extra information for Erich: I create my own kepler input files direct from Space Track (with the help from HaloKepler) here an example (http://www.pe0sat.vgnet.nl/kepler/mykepler.txt) and use multiple groups that use there own kepler input when object ID's are no longer available or have changed and satellites are active in the group file SatPC32 reacts with the message Ungultige gleitkommaoperation Maybe it is possible to have SatPC32 act different when object ID's are changed or removed from the kepler input file and active in one of the group files. 73 Jan PE0SAT On 05-06-2014 21:49, Bob- W7LRD wrote: This is on different computer- I get Ungultige gleitkommaoperation marching across the screen. The program seems to work but was abandoned when I gave up and decided to write my own tracker. I am sure there are many other similar programs out there but if you do not have one this might help. I have experienced a similar problem in satpc32, although the error message is not exactly the same. I see this only on a Win 8.1 PC. Re: [amsat-bb] satpc32 E/A-Fehler 105. error
Bob, I can tell you from years of experience with writing tracking programs for Windows and iOS that one of the biggest problems is decay. Strange things happen to math routines when the altitude of the satellite drops below the surface of the earth. One solution is filtering out these decayed sats from the list. The tracking program is the easy part the hard part is dealing with bad tle data. The old saying in the computer biz - garbage in, garbage out. Less you think this stuff is trivial take a look at this fine work by G3RUH. http://www.amsat.org/amsat/articles/g3ruh/111.html Maintaining lists of satellites and web pages is very time consuming. Some quit because it is a PITA. Fortunately there are some truly dedicated souls who do not give in to the lame PITA excuse. Dr. T.S. Kelso ts.ke...@celestrak.com is one. He maintains the most reliable set of sat tle data I know of. http://www.celestrak.com/ Another is Erich Eichmann who puts in countless hours of his time maintaining and improving SatPC32. We all owe a great deal to these two pillars of the hobby. I suggest using the Celestrak data sets exclusively. There will be the occasional sat that has decayed that may cause a problem but that is the nature of the hobby. All the sat tracking programs are complex - the only thing more complex than trying to figure out a sat tracking program is trying to figure out two of them. I am sure others have a different opinion but IMHO stick with SatPC32. 73 W9KE Tom Doyle On Tue, Jun 3, 2014 at 10:53 PM, Bob- W7LRD w7...@comcast.net wrote: I can not get it to run (satpc-32). [amsat-bb] SATPC32 Icom IC-910H Setting PL Tone Question
Happened to be up very late, trying to finish some work. My computer alerted me that SO-50 was rising, and even though it was 4AM, I thought I'd take a chance that someone might be on the bird. All efforts to raise the bird failed, even though it was a very high elevation pass. I realized that the bird had timed out and needed to be activated. Not something I was used to thinking about considering how busy SO-50 usually is. I searched in vain to try to figure out how SATPC32 was setting the 67.0 Hz PL tone. I figured I could modify that setting to make it transmit 74.4 Hz instead. But no joy. I know this can be set in the rig's menu, but I'd rather have a separate setting in SATPC32 for those rare passes when SO-50 is silent. Can someone walk me through how to edit the necessary file(s) and set this up? [amsat-bb] SatPC32 using flip mode at AOS
I am having a problem getting computer-controlled antenna tracking working in time for Field Day next weekend! System is G5400B az/el rotors, ST-2 trackbox, and SatPC32. Software is communicating with ST2 and rotors. The ST-2 appears to be properly configured, including the 180 deg elevation rotor range and the location of the azimuth stops at 180 deg (South). Manual control of the rotors is normal using the G5400 controller, ST-2 panel buttons, serial port commands to ST-2, and using the SatPC32 manual interfaces. SatPC32 sometimes goes into flip mode (use max elevation rotor range of 180 deg to avoid loss of tracking from a 180 deg azimuth swing mid-pass for high elevation passes) immediately at AOS. According to the manual, SatPC32 will not begin tracking a pass in flip mode. I've seen several times now SatPC32 enter flip mode immediately at AOS for low and mid-elevation passes where flip is not needed for the 2nd half of the pass. Toggling automated rotor control (R+/-) off and on during the early part of the pass doesn't alter the behavior. I assume I have an incorrect value in the SatPC32 rotor setup (yes, I've closed and restarted the program). Guess - how does the rotor setup use the N or S field to locate the azimuth rotor stops (my rotor has the stops at 180 deg/South) and does this come into play for flip mode? This doesn't explain why a flip would be commanded at AOS. I could prevent flip mode by setting the max rotor elevation to 90 deg, but I'd like to have flip mode capability when I need it. Suggestions? Can someone email me (no need to clutter the list) working settings for either ST-2 or LVB Tracker (I think they are electronically the same)? I've tried searching the amsat-bb list archive (to the extent it is searchable - if someone has a way to use, say, Google and the site: command or similar to do this, let me know) and searched the SatPC32 site and files and haven't found a clear answer. It just occurred to me that I can use direct serial port commands to the ST2 to test that the azimuth rotor moves CCW from, say, 175 deg to 185 deg, and does not try to go CW through the rotor stops. Repeating with SatPC32 interface should verify I have the azimuth stops set correctly without having to wait for a suitable satellite pass. I am hoping this may have something to do with flip mode being triggered. Or it may just give me something to try between satellite passes until I figure it! [amsat-bb] SATPC32 plays nicely now
As suggested by several here on the AMSAT mailing list, I removed the USB adapter in my LVB Tracker and inserted a MAX232 chip into the appropriate socket. I am using a Utek UT-880 USB to serial adapter with a Panasonic Toughbook CF-29 running XP Professional. It appears that everything is working now with no lockup failures. Before these changes, I simply could not track a complete satellite pass without the program stopping. I have been tracking the moon for hours with no problems noted. Now to test this arrangement with my Mac! Before making this change, MacDoppler worked perfectly. I hope it will continue. My next step is to fine tune the control of my IC-910 using SATPC32. As they say, I was all dressed up with no place to go late last night on FO-29. My LVB Tracker was working great with SATPC32, I had my IC-910 running about 20 watts, I could hear myself 59 on the downlink, there simply was no one on. Oh well, there will be many more orbits in which to play. 73, -james W5AOO ..getting more and more excited about Dayton ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. [amsat-bb] SatPC32 more info on problems and THANKS!
I sincerely appreciate all of the feedback on my SatPC32 issues. I figured out the Ghost tracking' issue or at least corrected the problem. Somehow my location became corrupted. I noticed that the little white dot (QTH) was missing from its normal location. By some means my latitude/longitude data changed. I have put in the correct numbers now and I expect the ghost will leave the area. As was mentioned, the issue in which all control stops is probably an interface problem. It may even be the notebooks having older firmware. I will continue to tinker in that area. The Panasonic Toughbook is a nice computer for ham work as it has both USB ports and a true serial port. The fact that the LVB Tracker works flawlessly with my Macbook through the same USB cable, more than likely this problem is Panasonic Toughbook related. I did try both USB ports on the Toughbook and had the same results. I will keep everyone informed as to how I resolve my problem. Thank you again for all of the responses. I feel sure I am on the correct path to making all of the components play nicely together. Engineers declared the rocket reached orbit, and the upper stage deployed a 8,377-pound block of aluminum designed to mimic the mass characteristics of the Cygnus spacecraft, which will take the dummy payload's place on the next Antares launch. [amsat-bb] SATPC32 and New Sat KEPS
Like many, I'm eager to track the new satellites launched over the past few days. If everyone will pardon more newbie questions, here goes: 1.) How do I input the published KEPS data for the new satellites into SATPC32? 2.) [amsat-bb] SATPC32 and IC-910H
I'm very new to satellite operation but have been having a blast for the past couple of weeks. Using an IC-910H with attic antennas that include a 7 element 432 Arrow antenna with an SSB Electronics pre-amp mounted at the antenna. 1/2 hardline makes the 70' run from the attic to the shack in the garage. 2 Meters shows a 6 element K1FO Yagi with an SSB Electronics pre-amp and 1/2 hardline. Rig is controlled by SATPC32 via the CI-V interface at 9600 baud. On SO-50, I have no problems with doppler correction as you would suspect. With the other birds, doppler is sometimes an issue. Sometimes I hear stations strongly but when I call them, I don't hear my own uplink and the other station obviously doesn't hear me either. On other passes, the difference is not so great, and I'll hear my own uplink, though usually slightly off frequency. I know its possible to adjust the uplink frequency in the software, and I've tried it during passes without much success. The translated help file from German isn't much assistance to me so far. Can someone on the list point me towards a better explanation on the web, or offer suggestions on how to correct the situation? Any help is greatly appreciated! -- 73, Les Rayburn, N1LF 121 Mayfair Park Maylene, AL 35114 EM63nf 6M VUCC #1712 AMSAT #38965 Grid Bandits #222 Southeastern VHF Society Central States VHF Society Life Member Six Club #2484 Active on 6 Meters thru 1296, 10GHz Light ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] SatPC32 Update for Tone Control of Yaesu FT-857/897
Recently I bought a new Yaesu FT-897D to replace a FT-817ND to give me a little more xmit power when operating portable, but still using internal batteries. When I tried to use SO-50 I found that I couldn't get thru the sat. Back home I traced the problem to the CTCSS tone not being set in the FT-897D via SatPC32 T1 T2. My FT-817 worked without a problem. I contacted Erich Eichmann who quickly sent me a modified version to test. It worked! Erich will be putting a patch version on his website shortly: www.dk1tb.de See the English page and then Download page. I thank Erich for making the change so quickly - much quicker than me in sending this to the AMSAT BB! Detailed Description - for those interested: The set CTCSS tone frequency is apparently the only CAT command that is different for the FT-857/897 from the FT-817. The 5-byte command for the FT-817 contains the tone frequency in bytes #1 2, and the command Opcode 0B in byte five. Bytes #3 4 are only place holders and are set to ASCII code zero by the SatPC32 program. For the FT-857/897 bytes #3 4 are used to set the receive CTCSS tone frequency. Apparently even if the receive tone is not being used, bytes #3 4 must contain a valid tone frequency. It looked like with ASCII code zero in bytes #3 4 that the radio would interpret the command as invalid and never set the Tx tone. There is no clarification of this in the user manual. Erich has now sent the Tx tone in both the Tx tone bytes and the Rx tone bytes (byte 1 = byte 3, byte 2 = byte 4). This appears to correct the problem of tone not being set. Now in SatPC32, for SO-50, when T0 is clicked to get T1, the CTCSS tone of 67.0 is set in the FT-897 (as seen in Menu Mode 083). When T1 is clicked to get T2 to enable SO-50, the CTCSS tone of 74.4 is set in the radio (as seen in Menu Mode 083). When T2 is clicked to get T0 for tone OFF, the CTCSS tone encoder is turned off but the tone of 74.4 still remains in Menu Mode 083 even though it is not being used. So now the CTCSS tone control function in SatPC32 works on the FT-897 (and should on the FT-857) just like it worked on the FT-817. The CAT commands on all three radios to turn ON CTCSS encoding is (4A xx xx xx xx 0A) and to turn OFF is (8A xx xx xx xx 0A). The tone ON/OFF function always has worked for all three radios. On the FT-897 I could see TEN on the display when the CTCSS tone encoder was ON either T1 T2 in SatPC32), and then TEN would disappear from the display when the tone encoder was OFF (T0 in SatPC32). For testing the transmitted CTCSS tone I found that the Tone Search Scanning function (tone decoder) built into the Yaesu VX-6R HT, the FT-817ND and the FT-897D, worked well and was just what I needed! [amsat-bb] SatPC32 Problems Connecting to TS2000
I've had intermittent problems with connecting SatPC32 to my TS2000 via CAT. I finally determined I thought that the Keyspan 4-port USB-Serial hub was the problem. I've had problems with it in the past so this wasn't a surprise. I dug out another single Keyspan USB-serial converter, plugged it in, had to reset the Com port to something higher (17) and tested it first with Ham Radio Deluxe. Whalla it worked connecting at 57600 baud rate. But I try to connect to the radio using the same parameters in SatPC32 and no dice. It tells me that com 17 isn't available. What am I missing. I am using VSP and could it be that I need to set up a pair. The ultimate goal is to control both the TS2000 for uplink and my Flex5KA with downconverters with SatPC32. It worked just fine including the Keyspan hub with my FT847 but not with the Kenwood. What am I missing? Rick W2JAZ ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. [amsat-bb] SatPC32 sets FT-817 doppler reversed
I am getting a problem with SatPC32 V. 12.8b and CAT control FT-817ND. The doppler correction is perfect with two separate FT-817s, one for TX and one for RX. Recently I have been having problems when using one FT-817 simplex for ISS and similar sats. SatPC32 is calculating correct downlink frequency with doppler correction but is setting the rig to the uplink frequency during receive and downlink frequency during transmit. Sometimes it works correctly but more often it has this problem. I slowed the CAT rate in case there were errors but no improvement. Any ideas or suggestions please? [amsat-bb] SatPC32 and ISS CubeSats to be deployed
Hi All, I've been preparing for the CubeSat release from ISS scheduled for tomorrow. Hope it happens!! For my simple brain, I've figured an easy way to get the frequency tracking/Dopper, etc entered into SatPC32. First, we can use the ISS Keps for tracking--at least for a few days probably, until Keps are released by Celestrak, etc. I already have that working (don't you?). So, no need to do ANYTHING with Keps--just make sure they are fresh. Second, there is the matter of frequencies! So, I entered the following into my Doppler.SQF file: ISS,145980.0,437485.0,FM,FM,Nor,0,0,F1 1k2 AFSK packet ISS,437485.0,145980.0,FM,FM,Nor,0,0,F1 CW telem over FM ISS,437250.0,145980.0,CW,FM,Nor,0,0,FITSat1 CW telem ISS,437445.0,145980.0,FM,FM,Nor,0,0,FITSat1 1k2 AFSK packet ISS,437505.0,145980.0,FM,FM,Nor,0,0,WE WISH 1k2 AFSK packet Now, all I have to do is track ISS (in normal SatPC32--don't use SatPC32ISS!), and using the CAT menu select the frequency of the CubeSat I want to listen to. If you look at the text line at the bottom of the box, you'll see why I put the CubeSat name at the end of each line above... Easy to do, no need to worry about launch Keps, etc. We have them already :) Remember, the upper most line is one that loads by default. For me, that's going to be the F1 1k2 AFSK FM packet signal. Also, after we DO get real Keps--all you have to do is edit the appropriate ISS with the name of the bird; make sure it's the same name used in the Keps (or get fancy and use the AmsatNames.SQF file). Hope that helps some of you... 73, -- Mark L. Hammond [N8MH] ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? [amsat-bb] SatPC32 Question
Satellite newby here, trying to setup a station... For all you SatPC32 users, a question. I'm using the software with 2 radios. One is an Icom IC-706MKIIG, the other is a Icom IC-746. While the 706 covers vhf and uhf, the 746 only covers vhf. The way my version of SatPC32 is set, it tries (depending on the satellite) to set the 746 to uhf. I suspect there is a way to tell the software that a radio can only do vhf, but can't seem to find where to do that. Anyone know? Thanks, -- Kelley - WØRK ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] SatPC32 12.8b and Win7
While working with the 8 teachers at Teachers' Institute II, I had a variety of computer operating systems. We had some odd behavior with the Win7 machines, but I am not sure if this was a fluke or a pattern. We were using SatPC32 v12.8b with the SAEBRTrackBox setting in the software, and the students with issues were running Win7. The G5500's did not always respond as expected. For example, if we commanded it to move to 45 degrees elevation, it would, but if we manually entered 179 degrees it would drop down to about 25 degrees. The fix seemed to be to set the turning point of azim rotor under the 'Rotor Setup to S instead of N. I am running v12.8a and have not trouble with the exact same set up and I am set to 'N. Has anyone else experienced this? In my trouble shooting, I believe I was able to trace it back to the computers/software. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. Matt, N8MS ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. After a few months of inactivity, SATpc32 is showing a funny but unfortunate feature: out of the 6 sats I have active (no change from previous use), only the linear birds show up on the screen. [amsat-bb] SatPC32 - New Program Feature - Doppler
Erich DK1TB has again implemented another great feature into SatPC32 V12.8b by means of a patch file. You can find it in the downloads link on his website, www.dk1tb.de Scroll down to Section 7, Patches. I often hear others talk about meeting someone, usually a long distance new grid square, on a certain frequency. Since doppler is always in play, telling someone you will be on 435.845 is meaningless unless you are both in the approximate same location. If the other station is at LOS and you are at AOS, your dial readings could be 15Khz apart. It's a great way to miss a 60 second window. The trick here is to use the same point of reference. That reference would be the frequency you are on at the satellite receiver. The whole idea of doppler correction is to be at a constant frequency within the satellite receiver passband. To do that you have to adjust your uplink frequency constantly. And you have to adjust your downlink frequency to continue to hear yourself or someone else using full doppler correction. Erich has now added the option of seeing the frequency you are on at the satellite receiver. This is a common frame of reference so if you tell someone you'll be on 435.845 at the satellite, they can be on that same frequency even though your terrestrial dial frequencies will be much different. Just adjust your receiver or use the up/down buttons in SatPC32 to set your frequency shown in the Sat window. That frequency will remain constant as your uplink and downlink are controlled by SatPC32. If you haven't managed to interface your radio with SatPC32, this is just another reason to do so. Staying at a constant frequency at the satellite allows many stations to share the bird without drifting into each other. And being able to know exactly where you are in the passband without doing the calculation in your head gives you more time to concentrate on making a successful QSO! Rumor has it that even a certain Maritime Mobile will soon be controlling his radio with SatPC32. 73, John K8YSE ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. SatPC32 version 12.8b is available for download at http://www.dk1tb.de/downloadeng.htm The main SatPC32 program window now displays more information such as the date of the Keplerian elements file in use. Before upgrading your SatPC32 installation, be sure to use the new program (in the ZIP file) to backup your user configuration. The upgrade erases all previous user configurations, but the new program will restore your configurations after upgrading. The download is a demo version that requires users to enter their lat/lon each time the program is started. To make the program fully functional, enter your existing registration code or purchase a registration code from the AMSAT web site: http://www.amsat-na.com/store/category.php?c=Software DK1TB, the author of SatPC32 has donated the software to AMSAT. All sales of SatPC32 are used to support AMSAT. Here are the changes described in the What's New file: 1. SatPC32, SatPC32ISS, Wisat32 and SuM now support rotor control of the M2 RC-2800 rotor system. 2. The CAT control functions of SatPC32, SatPC32ISS and Wisat32 have been expanded. The programs now provide CAT control of the new Icom transceiver IC-9100. 3. The main windows of SatPC32 and SatPC32ISS have been slightly changed to make them clearer. With window size W3 the world map can be stretched (only SatPC32). 4. The accuracy of the rotor positions can now be adjusted for the particular rotor controller. SatPC32 therefore can output the rotor positions with 0, 1 or 2 decimals. Corrections of the antenna positions can automatically be saved. In previous versions that had to be done manually. 5. The tool 'DataBackup' has been added. The tool allows users to save the SatPC32 program data via mouse click and to restore them if necessary. After the program has been configured for the user's equipment the settings should be saved with 'DataBackup'. If problems occur later, the program can easily restore the working configuration. 6. The rotor interfaces IF-100, FODTrack, RifPC and KCT require the kerneldriver IOPort.SYS to be installed. Since it is a 32-bit driver it will not work on 64-bit Windows systems. On such systems the driver can cause error messages. To prevent such messages the driver can now optionally be deactivated. 7. SuM now outputs a DDE string with azimuth and elevation, that can be evaluated by client programs. Some demo files show how to program and configure the client. 73, Wayne Estes W9AE Oakland, Oregon, USA, CN83ik ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. [amsat-bb] SatPC32 setup
I just added a new computer to the shack and have SatPC32 all set and running fine. My problem is that during setup, I chose 360 degrees for azimuth instead of 450 and can't change it now. When I go into the rotor setup menu, I can change everything else except for the max azimuth. I had this problem before and can't remember how I fixed it. [amsat-bb] SatPC32
Hi Guys Many thanks for all the help the Doppler function is now working correctly. My issue was that because all my computers are on a domain the my documents folder is on the server and not the local PC when SATPC32 installed it puts all the .SQF files on the server. Once I realised what was happening I found the file and added the satellites and all worked ok. Thanks again for your help 73 Keith GU6EFB ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] SatPC32 Doppler.SQF file
Hi Group Have just downloaded the trial version of SATPC32 and have most things working ok. The only thing I cant get to work is the Doppler tracking SatPC2 controls the rig an Icom 910 fine with the default satellites well. It give examples of what to added in the Doppler.SQF file so here are my questions. Should the Doppler.SQF file have been created during installation I had to create my manually? I have put an entry in for ARiSSAT1 but SATPC32 is not picking this information up from the file. I know that this is a newbie error but could somebody point me in the right direction 73 and Thanks Keith GU6EFB ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. [amsat-bb] SATPC32 - Keps Path
Is there a way I can change the default PATH for my Keps files in SatPC? I like to keep one Kep file on one computer and load them over my LAN to the other computers/programs. I want to start using SatPC again after not being very successful using HRD Sat Tracker on ARISSat-1. It seems that the program of choice here on this bulletin board is SatPC. It has been ages since I have used it so I am trying to get it up-to-date and configured for ARISSat-1. I have spent hours searching the archives and I think I have all the SQF files setup. It is controlling the radio (TS-2000) and rotor. Thanks, -- *Carl W8KRF * ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? Hi Eric ON4HF, I wonder which version of SatPC32 are you using? I have put your lines into DOPPLER.SQF file but it does not do any change! Isn't there any mistake in those lines? Otherwise nasa.all file does not contain RADIOSCAF-B data! It can be found in amateur.txt list only! gl de ha6nn Andras ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. [amsat-bb] SatPC32 Band Change?
Hello Erik et al, I'm using SatPC32 with an ICOM 821H. Is it possible to have SatPC32 change the up/down band for each satellite? The way I have it working now, I have to manually swap bands. [amsat-bb] SatPC32 simplified
Thanks for all the feedback on the tracker. A few people commented that it was a bit complex mechanically. This got me thinking about a minimal version where the mechanical section could be built in less than an hour by almost anyone. Several people asked about moving antennas. The motor in the iPoint has torque of only 35 oz-in. This is at least an order of magnitude less than enough to move an even a small antenna. The main project I am working on is an az-el rotor for small antennas. The azimuth rotor is working and I am working on the mount for the mast. I want to make sure the azimuth rotor is rock solid before working on the elevation rotor. The reason the motor driver in the iPoint is so over designed is that it was designed for the actual rotor not the iPoint. The iPoint actually started out as just a test bed for software development. A few people have asked about astronomical applications. I have thought about that myself and have been looking for a simple usb telescope to mount on iPoint. It would be interesting to set up SatPC32 to track the moon and let iPoint run all night and capture shots of the moon from the usb tele. The tele would have to be very small and light weight. Does anyone have Kardashian data for heavenly bodies ? Wonder if anyone caught that. I actually would like to know if it is possible to track the moon with SatPc32 and if so where to get the elements. Here is a short HD video of the minimalist iPoint. While it may be a piece of junk it does work and might give someone some ideas on building something simple but much better than what I did. It did require only a hand drill and a hacksaw and took only about an hour to build. After seeing it you may wonder while it took an entire hour. There is a quarter just to the right of the beast for size reference. There was quite a bit of discussion on auto license plates a while back. I did not want to contribute to the QRM then but I do have something on that topic at the end of the video. It is actually my photo qsl without the address information - you will understand when you see it. Since I do not operate very often and qsl only when I get one this is probably your only chance to see this rare card. If you look carefully at the back left of the video you can see the azimuth rotor partially disassembled. I keep it there to make me feel guilty when I work on something else. here is the simplified tracker - I know it is junky so no need to tell me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGwyUdb_vHs Here is the good tracker in case you missed it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnc4-XcEXEQ 73 tom ... ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] SatPC32 == iPoint
Hi, I recently completed a project that someone on the board might find interesting. One goal was to make it compact so it could be taken and used outside the shack. It weighs 4 lb 5 oz and connects to your computer through a USB or serial port. Another goal was no knobs, switches or any other controls - there is only a reset button on the circuit board that I have never used. It would be a great thing to take along when making presentations on ham satellites. It would also be fun on field day since it runs off 12V and is portable. It works with SatPC32 by emulating the Yaesu GS-232 controller. It should work with other tracking programs but I have not tried them (SatPC32 works great for me and AMSAT needs the money). You might want to check out the youtube video that gives a little demo. It is full HD and looks very cool in full screen HD. I guarantee there is absolutely no footage of me waving my Arrow II antenna around. FAQ -- Q: Why no surface mount parts. A: I am too old and clumsy Please read the Entire Description on the youtube page before watching the show. [amsat-bb] SatPC32 Question for an expert
Sat32PC works great for me but I do have one question. I am finishing up my rotor control software that works with SatPC32 and need to know what happens with SatPC32 when there is a directly overhead pass if SatPC32 is set up with a 90 degree max for the elevation rotor. I have no idea how to set up some sat orbit elements to produce a directly overhead pass for testing. In fact, I am not sure I even want to know how unless it is very simple. My best guess is that for example: If the current azimuth is 0 degrees and the current elevation is 89 degrees. If the next update would be azimuth 0 degrees and elevation 92 degrees I hope that SatPC32 would output azimuth 180 degrees and elevation 88 degrees as I believe this is the same heading. I know that in overhead passes the position is not critical but I would still like to know what SatPC32 does. If someone knows FOR SURE please let me know with a direct email as I no longer read the b-b postings. tnx and 73 W9KE ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. [amsat-bb] SatPC32 Yaesu FT-857 question
Hi All, Can anyone tell me if when operating odd-split (rx on 440, then when you press the PTT is switches to 2m. [amsat-bb] SATPC32 and FT847
Hi all, In an attempt to dabble my toes in the linear transponder pool, I asked a FT847 owner friend to bring his rig over to try and understand the mechanics of making it all work with the computer interfaced. Got SatPC32 to communicate at 9600, 8, none, 1, none, with the radio and the radio responded to changes I made on the program like using keystrokes to modify the frequency of uplink or downlink. Problem is that although the program was tracking Doppler correctly, the radio was not tracking at all. With the multiple lines of possibilities on the Doppler.sqf file as is the case for AO-51, I can go to the CAT dialog and change the mode frequencies just fine, the radio goes to the new frequencies and even reflects the current state of the Doppler shifted frequencies but from there, no Doppler corrections occur. Now I remember reading the Manual that CAT Delay for the FT897 needed to be set to 20. Cat Delay is in the Radio Setup dialog is defaulted to 70. I realize this now after the fact with radio not in my presence. Is this the reason that the above mentioned problem could be occurring? I hope to make another go at this in a few weekends in the hope of getting ready for Field Day. Thanks for the help of the list.
