Is there a way to prevent Android SDK from being loaded into Eclipse (more importantly, its presumed resource drain) when I work on non- Android projects? Re: [android-beginners] Re: android-sdk-mac_x86-1.5_r3.zip
I have one if you really need it but like mentioned, you should be able to build for 1.5 with the currently available SDK. Shawn On Tue, Nov 24, 2009 at 12:35 AM, abnormative abnormat...@gmail.com wrote: I have an expanded/installed copy (but not the original zip) of android-sdk-mac_x86-1.5_r3. I could zip that up (although some data may have been changed or added since the original install, since I was using it for a while). As I understand it, the newer SDKs support multiple platforms (releases of Android) going back to 1.5. So if you just need to work with 1.5 in ordinary ways, a new SDK should do it. Re: [android-beginners] why Java, not Python?
Again, not trying to start any arguments, just curious if anyone has any background on this. Well consider that Google AppEngine started in python and then added java support. In some ways, the python version is more advanced. I don't know why java was chosen but you have to believe that python was looked at seriously as well and for some reason ... I don't know the exact reasoning though. Shawn -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Beginners group. Re: [android-beginners] Will Android OS support East-Asian Languages?
As stated in the title.. Not sure what you mean by support but ... Sure. No problem. My IO conference handset displays Japanese just fine. There are input methods such as simeji (which got good when the Japanese IME maker open sourced it) which run well. On the other hand, I have US numbers and Japanese number in my contact list and I wish I could select the format for the dashes on a case by case basis. As for other languages, I suspect the support is there. Getting an IME to input a language may vary by language though. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Beginners group. [android-beginners] Re: HTC Hero
Will the app I wrote for G2 work the same way on a Hero? It may. If you are using bluetooth, it may not. I am not sure why -- other than to say bluetooth is not finalize as an api -- but there are differences in the G2 and Hero. Apps that work on the G1, and G2 fail under Hero. This is bluetooth specific though and again the api is not official. Shawn --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Beginners group. Re: Automatic Updates - iphone vastly superior (Was Re: [android-beginners] Re: Availability of Developer Phone.)
Hi, Perhaps a Google experience phone can be upgraded over Wi-Fi? This is something I will try out the next time my phone detects an upgrade. If it works, please let me know the process so I can get the info out to anyone here who might choose to go that route -- including letting DoCoMo know!. If you have an Android Dev Phone then you can upgrade yourself over USB: Off ebay, I had to ship it to my mom's house [no can do to Japan]. Then she died. Will be there the week after next to pick it and her things up. Good news is I called her to ask her if she'd forward my dev phone to me. It was the last time we talked... If you are planning on pitching in with the Android source code, then you should know how to make your own builds. ;-) Well yeah that's the plan. I need bluetooth to control Lego robots. Re: Automatic Updates - iphone vastly superior (Was Re: [android-beginners] Re: Availability of Developer Phone.)
You can download the OTA over WiFi, yes. Eh? At the DoCoMo shop set up to handle the initial Android release here is Japan I asked that very question. Sorry, if that's true then it was my carrier misinformation and not a flaw in Android. I apologize. I was told no! I was told I needed to get on one of their more expensive package plans as a minimum plan would cost me $800 if an 80mb update came. Even on the package plan, I'd be looking at the fee cap of $60. I was even asked to sign a waver stating I understood that -- in English even here in Tokyo. WiFi was stated as not being an option for updates. I guess the carrier is just pushing people onto their plans or maybe the just don't understand well. Re: Automatic Updates - iphone vastly superior (Was Re: [android-beginners] Re: Availability of Developer Phone.)
I cannot speak for what happens on an NTT DoComo network, but whenever my phone (on a T-Mobile US network) informs me of an available update, I switch it to WiFi to download the update faster. OK, thanks for the info. I'll have friends confirm if that is possible. Shawn --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Beginners group. Automatic Updates - iphone vastly superior (Was Re: [android-beginners] Re: Availability of Developer Phone.)
Also, all “with Google” Android phones will automatically update themselves to the latest firmware. I think this needs to be worked on and is not a good function. I didn't buy a DoCoMo ht-03a (magic) because of it. I want control to be able to update via wifi and not pay packet charges. In Japan, monthly packet fees start at about $5 and max out at $60. Even if I don't use packets, your update could result in me seeing a $60 bill. This only makes sense for those people who are ready for a $60 bill every month because then if an update comes, they are at the limit anyway and won't be charged any more. For us users who are trying to keep below $60 per month, your automatic updates means we can't control our costs by limiting our usage. Marketing-wise, maybe the target user is people who expect a $60 bill every month. As an app developer, I'd like to see wider adoption. The iphone here starts at the same $5 per month and then you pay by usage up to a maximum (same $60). How can iphone push updates that don't cost the user but android can't? Re: Automatic Updates - iphone vastly superior (Was Re: [android-beginners] Re: Availability of Developer Phone.)
Mobile phone carriers push updates to devices. Also, mobile phone carriers set the packet fees, if there are any, for such updates. Hence, your questions need to be directed to the mobile phone carriers serving your area. Well they are using cupcake out of the box mostly with just a Japanese IME. So if cupcake does not allow users to choose when an update is installed, there is very little the carrier can do. OK, they can rewrite android. OK, I could try. Also, all “with Google” Android phones will automatically update themselves to the latest firmware. I don't necessarily see that as my local carrier's decision. Still...for Google branded handsets to push out updates at their whim with no recourse to the user but to pay the packet charge. yikes. I went for a dev. model which means no copy protected apps I guess. Shawn --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Beginners group. Re: Automatic Updates - iphone vastly superior (Was Re: [android-beginners] Re: Availability of Developer Phone.)
1. Ask your carrier. Idle speculation gets you nowhere. Only the people who would send you a bill can tell you what will be on that bill. Everyone who gets Android in Japan gets a form to sign consenting to packet charges for updates. They state there is no way to do it over wifi. That is the first picture users in Japan will get of Android - ridiculous unless you want to pay a ton. 2. This is not an appropriate list for this discussion, as this list is for QA with beginners in using the Android SDK. I take it from your statement then from a technical point of view that the SDK can not be used to allow users any choice as when to update if it is being pushed from a carrier. OK, thank you for the information. That is what I wanted to know. Shawn --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Beginners group. Re: Automatic Updates - iphone vastly superior (Was Re: [android-beginners] Re: Availability of Developer Phone.)
Updates over Wifi would definitely be a nice-have, but with the work-arounds available, I would say it's not amongst the highest priorities for the Android platform to face. I see. OK. I probably can't get a firmware upgrade from the carrier with the *correct security certificate* to do it myself. Anyway, I got a dev phone and hope to pitch in with getting the bluetooth api running. I just wish Google would push the carrier (in negotiations to use the Google brand) to make updates available to me so I could install instead of paying packet charges. I'm not the target consumer I guess but I think there are quite a few people in my situation. As it is, the only way to get updates on Google branded phones in Japan is to pay for the packet charges. For this reason, I don't see Android adoption really taking off in Japan. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Beginners group. [android-beginners] work on bluetooth api
Hi, How does Android development work. As the bluetooth API get developed, if I have a developer phone, could I flash my device with builds to try to develop with and possibly debug the bluetooth api. Also, does wifi work on a developer handset without a 3g (data packets) contract with a provider -- i.e., can I use wifi at home?
