[android-beginners] Rado's Colorthon Tutorial Now Available on YouTube

2009-06-02 Thread radiolistener

Hi All,

I just finished my fourth video, of the Colorthon Video Tutorial.
It's a basic tutorial that explains how you can set shared preferences
and layout manipulation. This will enable you to allow the users of
your application to customize the look and feel of the application.
In this instance it's the colors. It allows users to pick from 64
different collors on six different settings.

There are 4, 10 minute video in the series. The source code I will be
putting on my web site, radiolistenersElectricEasel.com, as soon as I
get a chance to. This is my way of giving back to the community.

Feedback is always appreciated,
radioliste...@radiolistenerselectriceasel.com

The YouTube link is: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=A4FF04A11E7C4FE5
And they will also be embedded into my web site where I'll put the
source code, under Apache License.

Thanks,

John Leone

[android-beginners] Graphing in Android

2008-11-09 Thread radiolistener

Hi All,

I'm just starting out with Android. I got an idea for an application
for diabetics to log their blood levels, diet, and exercise. To that
end, I want to incorporate a graph, that, at the access points, allows
a user to drill down to different types of custom documents showing
the detail associated with the given point on the graph.

The type of graph I'm trying to create is very similar to what's
available in Google Analytics. Is there something in the API that is
designed for custom graphing.

Any insights would be appreciated.

Thanks,

John.

2008-11-10 Thread radiolistener

Many Thanks Mark!

I got much work to do before I require the graphing. I'll see if at
that time if somebody has produced a library, otherwise I'll try to
create one.

Still getting my sea legs, but I wanted to start out with the graph,
instead, I'll start out with the data structures and the lists.

Thanks Again,

John.

[android-beginners] Videos of NotePad Tutorial

2008-11-26 Thread radiolistener

Hi All,

I'm new to Android. I've been working on the NotePad Tutorial in the
Getting Started part of this site. It is an awesome tutorial,
however, I missed that it didn't have accompanying video. So, after
successfully going through the examples of the tutorial, I decided to
try and provide a video series.

To that end, I've created two videos so far covering parts of Exercise
1 of the tutorial and there will be more to follow over the weekend.

If anybody could take the time to give it a look and let me know if
the video are helpful, it would be appreciated. The videos are
available on my site at :
http://radiolistenerselectriceasel.com/Tutorials/AndroidNotePadTutorial1/tabid/65/Default.aspx
or if you prefer to watch them from YouTube itself, just do a search
on Radiolistener.

Thanks and BTW, Happy Thanksgiving,

John.

[android-beginners] Re: help getting started

2008-12-15 Thread radiolistener

Hi Curtis,

I downloaded Eclipse first, Ganymede(3.4). Then installed the java,
latest one.

Of note, I put Eclipse in the Public directory, in it's own
subdirectory. The java I accepted the defaults.

Then I wrote a simple binary tree example.

Then I installed the Android developer kit.

In order to install Java, I installed it as an Administrator, under
Administrator Permissions.

As to the Eclipse, I found it required several modifications of
Eclipse.ini, to handle the different applications.

With the Android developer kit, you must insure that you have the same
workspace as the installation. There are probably workarounds on
this.

All of these worked well running under user permissions, until they
began banging against the firewall. It caused several freeze ups,
finally, I made my developer log-on an Administrator.

So, it does work under Vista, it just takes adjustments and knowing
how to do it. The only real issue I'm noticing, is that it puts extra
load on my graphics, and when I work with it to create screen captures
of Eclipse, the video is behind the audio.

I hope you find something in this post helpful. The biggest
recommendation is that you get Eclipse fully operational, and then
install the Android libraries.

[android-beginners] Re: notepad tutorial problem with Input configuration changed

2008-12-16 Thread radiolistener

Hi ThisNameAgain,

I don't have a G1 yet, so I can't say I've tried it. But I've done a
lot with the Notepad example. If you are on Exercise2, you may want
to forge ahead to exercise3 and see if that solves it. With exercise
2 it is hobbled, in that it can not save state if it loses focus.
With exercise 3, it has the ability to save state, and is a much more
powerful application.

I have completed exercise1 and exercise2 in video representation on my
site and I am now doing the Ground work on exercise3.

That's my best advice I can give, hopefully it proves helpful.

Best of Luck,

John.

[android-beginners] Released Radio's Diabetes Companion, Early Alpha to Marketplace

2009-01-10 Thread radiolistener

Hi All,

The Diabetes Companion Program that I've been discussing is now in a
Preliminary release on the market place. It isn't the entire package,
rather just the module for Blood Levels or Blood readings.

If anybody has the chance to look at it, it would be appreciated.
It's in the Applications->Lifestyle part of the MarketPlace and can
also be found by doing a search on Radiolistener.

It is a combination of the code I studied while doing the videos for
the NotePad example on YouTube and my studies of the dialogs. To see
how it works, there is an explanatory video on YouTube. These can
also be found via a search on YouTube for Radiolistener.

Any insights would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

[android-beginners] Radio's Diabetes Companion Alpha 2 released at the Android MarketPlace

2009-01-22 Thread radiolistener

Hi All,

I released my second Alpha version of RDC. In this version there is
the ability to export the data into .csv on the memory card. Allowing
you to then mount the card and see your data in any spreadsheet
program. There is also sorting of the main list. You can sort on
either the date/time or the blood level. To achieve this I created a
series of graphics for the different possible sorting states. There is
also now an icon for the program.

If you get a chance to download it and give me some feedback, it would
be appreciated.

Thanks,

[android-beginners] Re: Can i develop on Windows OS?

2009-02-28 Thread radiolistener

I develop under windows vista ultimate. The only thing I've noticed
is that when you are publishing an application, you need a command
line running under administrator. to do this, make a .bat file on
your desktop, in the .bat file, just cmd. The purpose of it is, when
you run it, do it with a right click, and pick "Run as Administrator",
you'll get the UAC prompt, and then you can do all the packaging
settings to publish.

[android-beginners] Re: Mix of autocomplete and list

2009-02-28 Thread radiolistener

I've done sorting buttons, those are just order by clauses populating
the cursar, in the data provider. If you combine one of those on a
text field, then have a two parameter query in your cursor creator.
Trap each keypress, then requery. Not sure what that much overhead
would do with large record sizes. You'll have to use wildcards,
you'll have to look that up, haven't done it yet in sqlLite.

I'm kinda wondering this myself. My current app is very centered
around the G1, that I have available. I'm wondering how well it would
port to "Magic", especially with the on-screen keyboard. But I don't

"Magic" skins for the emulator, I think it's over at AndroidGuys.com.

[android-beginners] Re: Scroll in ListView

2009-02-28 Thread radiolistener

If you set x,y to 0,0 you will go to the top of your scroll, not the
top of your main view. I've been doing a lot with scrolls, because
I'm working with some low resolution stuff. If you need to roll it to
the top, 0,0 will do the trick.

If you need to pick an individual item, you should experiment with the
y variable as some sort of multiple of the entry size.
