[android-developers] Question about defining selector drawable

2009-02-15 Thread Meryl Silverburgh

Hi,

I am trying to setup a selector drawable in my asset file like this:
* 2 different images for 'on'/'off' mode in rest mode (i.e. it does
not has focus)
* another 2 different images for 'on'/'off' mode in focus mode (i.e.
it has the focus).

In my case, the rest mode works, but the 'focus' mode does not.

Can you please tell me what am I missing in the focus mode? Thank you.

?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8?
selector xmlns:android=http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android;

!-- these 2 images works ---
item android:state_checked=false android:drawable=@drawable/off /
item android:state_checked=true android:drawable=@drawable/on /

!-- these 2 images does not work --
item android:state_focused=true android:state_checked=false
android:drawable=@drawable/off_focus /
item android:state_focused=true android:state_checked=true
android:drawable=@drawable/on_focus /

/selector

Hi,

Now - I dont have any problem with competition - I LOVE competition,
and am sure
I can make the best app (otherwise I would not be in this business).
But
if other apps get to the market MONTHS ahead - it makes it harder to
even
impossible to gain the same exposure and market share.

I think I understand the hardship on Google side, but I think they
need to
come up with a solution asap - maybe initiate a solution similar to
the
one suggested here, or hurry and make the arrangements to accept
developers
from all other countries. Go and buy an ESD that handles it - you have
the money...

Or - I will settle for a commitment from Google that they will
eventually
make it so I can sell and get paid here in Israel (I dont mind selling
only
in the US - dont need to sell in Israel), and they let me start
selling NOW,
and accumulate my funds until they can transfer them to me.

Anyway - Al - please keep us updated if you are going to suggest such
an arrangement - I tink I, for one, will be interested.

Thanks !

[android-developers] Re: Need some help at testing an Android game

2009-02-15 Thread Jon Colverson

I ran it a few times on my G1 and I got:
min: 15, 8, 15
max: 44, 44, 47
avg: 25, 24, 27

The animation is fairly smooth, but there is a brief delay (~100ms)
every few seconds caused by garbage collection.

On the G1 screen it often looks like there are two bullets in a row
when there is only really one, which is presumably because the bullets
are black and the screen's response time isn't high enough.

I also tried running the demo while moving my finger around on the
screen and the performance was much worse:
min: 5
max: 23
avg: 13

That's probably because of the issue described here:
http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/thread/39eea4d7f6e6dfca
which is worth looking at if you're planning to use touchscreen
control in the game.

[android-developers] How to use android:pathPattern attribute in intent filters?

2009-02-15 Thread geometer

Hi,

I would like to associate an activity with http links to files of
several types. More precisely, I would like to open in my activity all
the files with extensions .epub, .fb2 and .fb2.zip.
Unfortunately, there is no standard mymetype associated with such
files on the Internet. So I would like to use a filter by file path.

I've added the following lines into my AndroidManifest.xml:

intent-filter
action android:name=android.intent.action.VIEW /
category android:name=android.intent.category.DEFAULT /
category android:name=android.intent.category.BROWSABLE /
data android:mimeType=*/* android:scheme=http
android:pathPattern=.*\\.epub /
data android:mimeType=*/* android:scheme=http
android:pathPattern=.*\\.fb2 /
data android:mimeType=*/* android:scheme=http
android:pathPattern=.*\\.fb2\\.zip /
/intent-filter

(Yes, I would like to download these files directly from my
application, not by the standard Download Activity.)

However the result is slightly confusing:
1. For some links this works as I mean, great!
2. However, when I click the link http://www.feedbooks.com/book/1810.epub,
browser tries to download it using standard Dowload Activity and says
Cannot download. The content being downloaded is not supported on the
phone.
3. In the other hand, all the *.zip links are now processed by my
activity!

What is wrong in my AndroidManifest.xml?

Regards,

Are you looking at the log in DDMS? There must be some log output
associated with your application. At the very least, you should see
ActivityManager starting and stopping it.

You can also add some logging to your code.

[android-developers] Android Market broken? Can't see the new release of my app in the Android Market?!

2009-02-15 Thread Mariano Kamp
Hi,

  strange thing. I uploaded a new release of my app.

  I downloaded the new version from the Market to try it out and I got the
new binary, it also state V1.3.0, which is the new version. The description
is from the release before that.

  Very strange. When looking at http://www.cyrket.com/package/com.newsrob I
see the old version V1.2.1 and the old description.

  When looking at a G1 where the old version is installed it doesn't provide
me with the option to upgrade it.

  Btw. I followed the same steps as the weeks before. The Market has changed
and I could use new options (DRM, not paid as I am not from the US/UK), but
I kept the old options.

  Meanwhile the old description is also in the developer's console (which I
will change again right away), but it says 1.3.0 and when re-uploading the
apk it says The new apk's versionCode (130) in AndroidManifest.xml must be
higher than the old apk's versionCode (130)., which is fine, well kind of.

  Any idea what's that about?

Cheers,
Mariano

[android-developers] WebView.addJavascriptInterface - only String and void supported from Java to Javascript?

2009-02-15 Thread Miguel Paraz

Hi,
In the object shared between the Java and Javascript code, it appears
that only void and String Java return types are supported. Is this
correct?

I wanted a method that returns a String[] so that my Javascript could
loop over it, but it was never called. I also tried an int, and it
wasn't called either.

However, methods that take a String[] or int as parameters work as
expected.

I tried looking for how this was done in the framework source code,
but it is a native call in BrowserFrame.java.

Any idea? Thanks!

[android-developers] Re: RTSP and MMS - mediaplayer shenanigans

2009-02-15 Thread Rob Franz
No it's a cookie that you get upon passage of username and login.
That auth token is part of the URL that you get when a channel is selected.

If you enter that URL into a web browser within Windows, it'll pop up
Windows media player and play the URL - I can confirm that.

Will see if there's a way around this.

  I admit I'm new to RTSP in general but I think I understand how it
  works - for my purposes, all I need to do is pass the RTSP URL to the
  mediaPlayer.setDataSource() method, prepare it, and start. That
  should be pretty much it, if I understand correctly.

  No matter what I do, I always get Prepare failed.:
  status=0xFFFC ,etc. I try to modify different things, but I can
  never prepare the stream, and so I can't start it.

  Does the above URL qualify as an rtsp stream (i.e. remove the mms and
  put in rtsp)?

  As I understood it, RTSP obsoleted MMS, and MMS has been completely
  phased out, but apparently some services are still passing out that
  URL.

  Anyone seen anything like this before?

[android-developers] Re: Alarm Manager forgets repeating alarms?

2009-02-15 Thread Mariano Kamp
Nope, not until somebody broke into my house and rebooted it during my sleep
;-)

The other problem in finding the source of my issue is, that I can't go back
very long in the Android log files. My logfile tells me that the alarms
weren't fired, but the logfile doesn't contain any more information to
correlate that ;-(

Any idea how to expand the logfile, like to 12 hours?

I have a repeating task that runs once an hour. Some nights it runs
  without a hitch and some nights it runs a couple of times and then it
  isn't.

 Is it because your device is fully powered off and restarted?

 I think we need to wait for a PIM type API for have long-term
 persisting alarms.

[android-developers] Re: Question about defining selector drawable

2009-02-15 Thread Meryl Silverburgh

Thank you.
I tried this:

item android:state_selected=true android:state_checked=false
android:drawable=@drawable/off_focus /
item android:state_selected=true android:state_checked=true
android:drawable=@drawable/on_focus /

But the image still does not switch when my widget has the focus. It
still uses the 'orange rectangle boundary when it get the focus. I
think that is the default. I just want to change it to 2 different
images when it get the focus for my widget. Again, these works for my
widget now:

item android:state_checked=false android:drawable=@drawable/off /
item android:state_checked=true android:drawable=@drawable/on /

So I appreciate if you can help me out.

Thank you.

I dont know about DATA_Tiles, but DATA_Preferences definitely exists.
I'm not able to read the contents of DATA_Preferences.

Any idea what this means, and how do I resolve it?

Thanks,

You are not missing a file. However, one of your layout XML files has an
element that is missing the android:layout_height attribute.
Unfortunately, the error processing does not really tell you which
layout it is.

 And it said
 'binary xml', does it mean it is actually line 26 in my file?

Yes. Binary XML technically refers to the aapt-compacted version of
the layout, but it is still line 26 of whichever layout it is.

That's why you'd normally use VideoView, which does all this for you.
VideoView doesn't support playing from a resource though, so you have to
jump through some extra hoops for that case.

[android-developers] How to use Webview as a ListItem and have smooth scrolling?

2009-02-15 Thread Chister Nordvik

I am showing a RSS feed in my application using Webview as ListItem
and it works great except that it is very sluggish at times. Since I
don't know the size of the content then I can't set the height of each
Webview and therefore I have the following code (this is the code for
a single ListItem):

WebView android:id=@+id/rss_title
android:layout_width=wrap_content
android:layout_height=wrap_content
android:layout_weight=1
style=@style/RssText
android:textColor=#FF
  /

But the wrap_content causes the Webview to readjust size when
scrolling. The scrollbar-indicator of the listview also has problems
knowing the size of the complete list so it changes size when
scrolling. All this causes a very jerky experience when scrolling.

Is there any better way of doing this? Would really appreciate any
help!

[android-developers] Re: How to use Webview as a ListItem and have smooth scrolling?

2009-02-15 Thread Romain Guy

Using WebViews inside a ListView is a bad idea. We tried :) The
biggest problem is that when you load data inside a WebView, it takes
some time to do the parsing/layout and it happens that it is too slow
in the case of scrolling a ListView.

As for the scrollbars, Cupcake has a solution for it. There is a new
attribute for ListView telling it to disable smooth scrollbars; that's
what you want when the items have (very) different heights.

[android-developers] Re: java.lang.RuntimeException: Binary XML file line #26: You must supply a layout_height attribute.

2009-02-15 Thread Sergey Ten

This error message means that the layout file for this particular
activity does not specify the layout height attribute. I would guess
that the LinearLayout height should be set to fill_parent, so that it
would consume the entire screen (vertically).

Hope that makes sense,
Sergey

 Can you please tell me which xml file that I am missing? And it said

 or it is line 26 in the file after it compiles to be a binary xml file?

 Thank you.

2009-02-15 Thread automerc

Yea I manage to fix that but it still gives me an error when i ran
it. I manage to figure out that its cuase the Forms class instance as
every thing run fine when I comment all the code with list and Forms
in them. I looked through the notepad example and doesn't seem like
I'm doing anything different when creating the new class so I can't
figure why its causing an error. The Forms class only has 3 ArrayLists
to store data.

public class Forms {
private ArrayListString Qs;
 private ArrayListString[] As;
private ArrayListString choices;
public Forms(){
Qs = new ArrayListString();
As = new ArrayListString[]();
choices = new ArrayListString(10);
for (int i = 0; i 10; i++){
choices.set(i, null);
}
}

public void setA(int t, String Questions){
Qs.set(t, Questions);
}

public void setQ(int t, String[] Answer){
As.set(t, Answer);

}
}

[android-developers] docs/reference/keywords.html

2009-02-15 Thread Alex B

It seems that keywords.html has been removed from the docs as of
1.1_r1.

Even if the developer docs search box was case insensitive (which it
isn't), it would not live up to keywords.html.

I found keywords.html incredibly useful and would like to request that
it gets reincorporated with the next update.

Thank you kindly.

You really should learn to use logcat. You will be much more productive that
way.
The problem you are having is because this:

   choices = new ArrayListString(10);
   for (int i = 0; i 10; i++){
   choices.set(i, null);
   }

does not do what you think it does. The first line creates an *empty*
ArrayList, with a capacity for 10 items.
Then you try to set the first 10 items of the list, however the list is
empty, and so your index is out of range. If you look at the system log, you
will see the app throwing an IndexOutOfBounds exception.

Anyway, you'll have to pull your web site off and switch to a hosting

[android-developers] On android.media.MediaRecorder, can it record the voice of speaker?

Hello, buddies
It's about android.media.MediaRecorder.
I want to implement a feature to record the conversation, both voice
from speaker and microphone. But I tried on G1 phone, the
MediaRecorder only could record the voice from microphone. I looked
into the Android doc, there are only two audio sources, MIC and DEFAULT
(either to record microphone). So these are my questions:
1. whether can I implement it or not?
2. will more audio sources be supported? If so, which release or when?
Thank you:-0

[android-developers] EditText (textbox) to String

2009-02-15 Thread Noam

Hello everyone,
I have this piece of code which doesn't seem to work. I can't get the
EditText to a String.

//This is the part before onCreate:

public EditText nametext;
public String name;

//This is after the onCreate (I actually call this method from within
onCreate):

public void dialog() {
final Dialog dialog = new Dialog(this);
dialog.setContentView(R.layout.name);
dialog.setTitle(Name);
Button auto = (Button) dialog.findViewById(R.id.automatic);
auto.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
public void onClick(View view) {
nametext = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.nametextxml);
name = (String) nametext.getText().toString();
dialog.dismiss();
}
});
dialog.show();
}

Whenever I run this code, it gives me NullPointerException. I know
that this line is the problem:

trackname = (String) tracknametext.getText().toString();

Why is this happening? What's the correct way to convert this to a
String?

Thanks,
Noam.

[android-developers] Re: Installing applications on SD card

2009-02-15 Thread Jakor

there are design issues with installing apps to sd cards. first is
offering a format/partitioning utility to create available space.
second would be figureing out which apps to install where. if someone
were to release 2 versions of an app like old shareware you would have
pirate issues.

eg. app_demo.apk app_full.apk

user installs app_full.apk to sdcard and then copies it to the
internet. i'm not saying this way is pirate proof, but life is about
keeping the honest people honest look at calif gun laws...

anyways, its the same reason we have to root our phones, is because
google cannot be held responcible for giving us this control. same
reason game manufactures use anticopy protection schemes that have
already been broken.

it is a way for google to protect themselves. if you brick your
phone rooting it, your fault. you brick your phone following an
official google tutorial, it becomes googles fault for telling you

from a business standpoint, it makes sence. i garrenty google thought
about sdcards for installing apps. they were trying to squeeze every
last bit of memory out of the phone.

On Feb 13, 4:41 pm, pesh...@gmail.com pesh...@gmail.com wrote:
 I hope you guys can implement that in the next android updates. It is
 really cool that all the applications are free, but the G1 phone
 doesn't have a lot of on board memory, so please implement the feature
 to install applications on the SD Card. That is the only comment I
 have. A lot of people are Jailbreaking their phones just so they can
 get to that feature. Please consider it. Thank you.
 One more thing-If you can make it possible to save the browser cache
 data on the SD card as well will be awesome.
 Thank you again!

[android-developers] paintImmediately under Android

2009-02-15 Thread Chaton

Hi,

In standard Java, you use repaint() to force the paint() method.
paint() method starts after the end of the current method. I explain :

   public void joueIA()
   {
  PosC=1;
  repaint();
  PosL=1;
}

The paint method will start after the end of joueIA method (after
PosC=1 and PosL=1).

If you want to force the paint method immediately, you can use the
paintImmediately method.

   public void joueIA()
   {
  PosC=1;
  paintImmediately(0,0,getWidth(),getHeight());
  PosL=1;
}

Then, PosC=1, next the paint method starts and at the end of paint
method, posL=1.

===

OK, now, what's happen under Android Java :

You have this code :

   public void joueIA()
   {
  PosC=1;
  invalidate();
  PosL=1;
}

This code is the same as the repaint method (PosC=1 and PosL=1, next
onDraw starts)

The question is : What is the same as paintImmediately method under
Android, in order to force onDraw method in the middle of a method ?

Thanks for all,

Chaton.

[android-developers] Re: Are you localizing an app? Do you want to be?

Sorry that I write here a message,but I`ve already written a few new
messages in a new theme,but it doesn`t appear!!!

But how can I sign it???

On 3 Feb., 14:51, Peli peli0...@googlemail.com wrote:
 I have the same question.

 Dan, in the document you provided, in the section Publishing
 Localized Applications, the possibility is mentioned to break
 their .apk files apart into different builds for different groups of
 languages.

 The following suggestion is given:
 The easiest way to do this is to create a temporary folder in
 Eclipse, move out the resource directories which you do not wish to
 appear, rebuild the project, and then export an unsigned build as you
 normally would.  Then move the resource directories back in.

 Unfortunately, it seems Market does not accept multiple apks uploaded
 in this way, because package names have to be unique (and applications
 of different language share the same package name!).

 So for now, we can only include all language versions in a single apk
 and upload this. What would be the long-term solution here? Construct
 different package names based on the localization? (may lead to
 problems if the same content provider is used but several language
 versions are installed on the same device).

 I hope that the Market will allow to upload the same package for
 different localizations, as well as allow for adding different,
 localized titles and descriptions to applications.

[android-developers] No applications can perform this action.

2009-02-15 Thread Noam Habot
Hello everyone,I get the usual No applications can perform this action. Do
I need to install a mail program on the emulator? I have tried the K9 email
program, but I have not seen any changes. Are there any other programs out
there that could do the same? This is my code:

String[] mailto = {prefemail};

// Create a new Intent to send messages

Intent sendIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_SEND);

//Write the body of the Email

String emailBody = test123;

// Add attributes to the intent

sendIntent.setType(message/rfc822);

sendIntent.putExtra(Intent.EXTRA_EMAIL, mailto);

sendIntent.putExtra(Intent.EXTRA_SUBJECT, somesubject);

sendIntent.putExtra(Intent.EXTRA_TEXT, emailBody);

startActivity(Intent.createChooser(sendIntent, Email sent.));

Thanks,
Noam.

[android-developers] DDMS does not list processes

2009-02-15 Thread Rye

I've been trying to locate some excessive object creation to deal with
hiccuping caused by the garbage collector (any word on upcoming
improvements to this, btw?), and have discovered that DDMS is the tool
for the job. I shut down eclipse and booted up DDMS, and it finds my
device, but lists no processes running (no matter what I run).

Initially, it did list the powermanager app that I had installed, so
I assumed this was causing some kind of conflict and uninstalled it
and rebooted my device. Now it simply lists no processes.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Thanks for any help!

[android-developers] Capturing HEADSET_PLUG (android.intent.action.HEADSET_PLUG)

2009-02-15 Thread Henning Schaefer

Hi all,

yesterday, I spent several hours trying to figure out how to capture
the HEADSET_PLUG intent with a BroadcastReceiver. The manifest defines
the receiver, with its intent-filter set to action
android:name=android.intent.action.HEADSET_PLUG /.

The receiver is working correctly (I verified that by changing the
intent filter to capture things like SMS_RECEIVED including the proper
permissions and the receiver fired as expected on receiving an SMS),
but when listening for HEADSET_PLUG, it never fires. Debugging the
whole thing is a bit complicated, as the emulator doesn't seem to
support headsets and I have to disconnect my target device (a HTC
Dream) from USB in order to attach a headset (so there's no logfile
viewing). Are there any special permissions required for applications
to capture the HEADSET_PLUG intent (and if so, which? I've tried
several, to no avail)?

Maybe the Dream doesn't fire such an intent at all (that'd be bad luck
for me), but I guess that it must be an issue related to application
permissions. The documentation says extremely little (well, actually:
nothing) about the single permissions needed to perform all the
actions described in the API docs, so this is absolutely something to
be improved.

What I want to do: Upon detecting a headset, I want to re-route the
ringtones from the speakers to the headset, so as not to annoy people
in my vicinity by a harsh ringing sound (I'm used to this behaviour
from my old phone) - by default, the speaker just keeps on ringing, no
matter whether a headset is attached or not. This part is already
working, but now I need to know how to detect headset attachment/
detachment events.

Thanks in advance,

Henning

Yes, though you may find using HTTP to publish to a Web service to be
easiest.

 is there somewhere an example of how to do it?

Android includes the standard Java HttpUrlConnection class -- you should
be able to find examples of it through a search engine.

Android also includes the Apache HttpClient library. You can find
examples of it here:

[android-developers] Re: what's the Media Button?

2009-02-15 Thread Marco Nelissen
This is intentional. You want the app that actually handles the button to
not propagate it further. Otherwise you install, say, another music player
that also uses this button, you press the button, and now both of them start
playing.
If you want to use the button in your app, you need to give your receiver a
higher priority and call abortBroadcast when you handle the event. Since
this clearly doesn't scale, we'll add a better way for sharing the use of
this button in the future.

 You really should learn to use logcat. You will be much more productive that
 way.
 The problem you are having is because this:

                choices = new ArrayListString(10);
                for (int i = 0; i 10; i++){
                        choices.set(i, null);

 does not do what you think it does. The first line creates an *empty*
 ArrayList, with a capacity for 10 items.
 Then you try to set the first 10 items of the list, however the list is
 empty, and so your index is out of range. If you look at the system log, you
 will see the app throwing an IndexOutOfBounds exception.

Paid apps will not show up on the market for a few days (I believe the
official date is mid next week). Only a handful of people (the
google android team and select beta testers) have access to the paid
apps right now.

Not sure why you can't unpublish your app though, I to am having
problems with the developer console / market at the moment (see my
post over in the android discuss group) So I am hoping that these
issues get worked out before I upload my second paid app tomorrow and
before they go on sale to the US public next week.

 The Android Developer Console doesn't allow me to unpublish my
 previously published applications. I thought it may be a browser/
 javascript issue, but I tried several browsers with no luck.

 In addition, the applications I've published that are not free do not
 show up on the Market.
