hi Jitesh first of all i appriciate your patience and courage of writing such a long article you have disscused good things in your mail i just want to add some other names in MD's list GHULAM HAYDER did it in 1940s C RAMCHANDER did it in 1950s of course them came O P NAYYER and RD BURMAN in 60s 70s and 80s and then our master RAHMAN 90s and is urrently at charge these music directors gave new dimensions to music and gave a new style to the contemprary music they changed the then environment besides that there are two music directors who did not do anything different than the contemprary music but performed so well that they are legend in themselves NAUSHAD ALI and MADAN MOHAN legendry KHAYYAM is another example who can forget their work after 20 or 30 years rahman's work will still be fresh as it is today take the example of ROJA, it released in 1991-92 if we listen to that time's music, we will find the movies like SAAJAN, AASHIQI etc. now comparing ROJA with these we will find that ROJA was a work that was even ahead of its time and even after 12-13 years, we can find a cassette of ROJA at any cassette shop in India though 3 years old cassette will not be available there i totally agree with your view bye --- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, Jitesh Iyer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Dear Fans, There is one thing which we all have to be very clear about. OP Nayyar and RD Burman did it in the 50-60s and 70s-80s respectively. Illayaraja did it in the 80s. ARR is doing it in 90s- 2000s. Just wait another 10 years and see which songs you remember - those which claim 'commercial success' today, or those of ARR which might not be 'commercial' successes, but are a true success - it has not pulled purse strings, but it has pulled a chord in your soul, which, by-the-way, is the rightful place for music, not the purse. That said, I wont deny that S-E-L have produced certain soul stirring numbers and DCH still remains amongst my all time favourites. In fact, it can very well be passed off as an ARR album - its so good. So its not that no other MD is doing good. S-E-L are definitely on the right track, and if they continue to stick to it, they'll be the inheritors of ARR's brand of music. And guys, kindly refrain from calling Meenaxi and Swades average. If you dont understand the power of the songs, be humble enough to prefix your statement with 'in my humble opinion', thereby accepting your limited knowledge without pointing a finger at the great creator of music. Hi Fanz. Good day to all of you. I need the UOL Concert Pic, the one where ARR is 'pic'ced from the back with hands outstreched in black outfit. I need the 1024x768 (800x600 will also be fine) version so it fits my desktop background. Please upload it on the FTP. If already there, please tell me the filename. Also, one thing regd the T-SHIRT. You can make a quick one yourself if you have. And thats one more reason I want the pic badly. a. A T-Shirt, b. A Pic of your choice. c. Iron-On Transfer Paper. You have to print the pic from somewhere onto that Iron-On Transfer paper and then IRON it on to the T-Shirt. As simple as that. Dear ARR Fans This is in response to the reply of sahilthaker22 which was in response to Taurus8_0. Sahil has answered to Taurus8 really well, and I too endorse Sahil's views totally, I would like to add here, 1. It is very easy to make a light comment about ARR losing touch and all the stuff. What exactly is a 'touch' ? is it really the commercial success of the music ? I don't think so. Because in that case, ARR would never have stayed in this line for long. 2. It is the quality of the music and the approach of the composer to the subject of the movie. Except the movies where ARR recycled his songs ( with permission from the producers, probably for want of time ) I find that his music is honest with the story of the movie. As a result each of his song / album is different than the other one. 3. It requires an extremely sensitive mind to understand and appreciate music of ARR. Commercial success of any movie has no relevance as music director is one part of the jig-saw puzzle called the movie. All the pieces should fit in place then the whole effect is good. ARR can not be blamed if Swades or Bose could not do well. To me, both movies were outstanding, very sorry that majority is not with these movies. 4. As This forum is for ARR fans and we ( atleast me ) do not possess the knowledge to analyse ARR's music as experts. Atleast I am here to listen to ane enjoy ARR music. So lets spend time in exchanging news about his music and not pass on comments, especially loose ones. I enjoy / like / admire / respect / EACH AND EVERY song of ARR ( I have almost ALL of his songs, language NO bar ! ) and more than anything else, I respect the person ARR for what he is and for what he has gone through. It is really an education reading his biography which I found on one website. What a life ! What music ! Dear ARR, please continue to make music, we will ALWAYS stand by you and your music ! sorry boss but i do not think you are regularly visiting this group because before some days, this topic was under disscussion and several messages were devoted to this topic in short i can tell you these things 1. Rahman and Kumar Sanu have worked together in the movie KABHI NA KABHI and the song was MILGAYI MILGAYI WO MANZILEN 2. This song reused the tune of the ANJALI ANJALI song from the movie TU HI MERA DIL(DUET in tamil). 3. Yeah! I also think that Hum hay is pal kaha has been ruined by Udit. Also the Nayak song--Chale chalo mitwait was sung beautifully by both Hari and Srinivas in Tamil. So lets spend time in exchanging news about his music and not pass on comments, especially loose ones. I enjoy / like / admire / respect / EACH AND EVERY song of ARR ( I have almost ALL of his songs, language NO bar ! ) and more than anything else, I respect the person ARR for what he is and for what he has gone through. Hi guys Have u guys ever heard Kamal saying that illayaraja is the BEST in Background Music? and he at times degardes ARR indirectly in his interviews..Is it because ARR dont consider his musical suggestion to that extent or any personal clashes between them. I feel as ARR picks the right person to sing keeping kamal aside which makes him feel bad as he is a good singer. u can c that in the movie INDIAN as ARR dint give kamal a chance to sing , some how with great difficulty KS ravikumar did it in tenali as the songs needed Kamals voice badly... Hey i got his from the web. The name A.R.Rahman or Allah Rakha Rahman suggests melody and need no introduction. This is the man who redefined contemporary Indian music to appeal to the younger generation. Today, his very name is a 'guarantee' of good music and is a source of inspiration to millions. It was in the year 1991 when it all began. Mani Ratnam, one of India's best-known directors was in search of a new music composer for his films. At an awards function for excellence in the field of advertising, he met Rahman after he bagged the award for the best ad jingle in Sharada Trilok's advertisement for Leo Coffee. Sharada introduced the young composer to her cousin, Mani Ratnam who was so impressed that he signed him for K. Balachander's 1992 film Roja, six months later. The film was directed by Mani Ratnam and featured Madhoo and then debutant Arvind Swamy. At last, Rahman's talent and caliber came to the notice of the entire world. The song 'Tamizha Tamizha' in the film became a rage. The colourful fusion of pop, Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, reggae, rock, and classical Indian music (Carnatic) won him three awards for Best Music Director. A.R Rahman's music is greatly influenced by Sufi mysticism. It is interesting to note how this great music composer came up in life, considering his humble beginnings. A.S. Dileep Kumar or A.R. Rahman as we know today was born on January 6 1966, in Madras. Rahman's father, K.A. Sekhar was a successful musician, arranger and conductor in Malayalam movies and had worked with popular figures like Salil Chowdhary and Devarajan. Under this background, AR Rahman began learning the piano at the age of four. But life was not all that hunky-dory for the young boy who lost his father at the age of nine. The responsibility of supporting his mother Kasturi (Kareema Begum) and three sisters (Kanchana, Bala - now Talat and Israth), soon fell on his young shoulders. At the age of eleven, Dileep joined Illaiyaraja's troupe as a keyboard player and a session musician on soundtracks. All this was casting an adverse effect on Rahman's education. Lack of attendance and indifference on the part of the management forced him to shift from the prestigious Padma Seshadri Bal Bhavan to the Madras Christian College. However, he finally dropped out of school at the age of 16. He then roamed the world with various orchestras including renowned Zakir Husain. His experience and exposure helped him earn a scholarship and obtain a degree in Western Classical Music from Trinity College of Music, Oxford University. It was sometime in 1987 that Rahman ventured into composing jingles for television commercials, the first one being for Allwyn's new trendy range of watches. He composed more than 300 jingles in a matter of five years apart from his first album of Muslim devotional songs titled 'Deen Isai Malai' and the English album, 'Set Me Free'. However, that failed to make an impact in the market. Few of the popular ads that he did included Parry's, Leo Coffee, Boost showcasing Sachin Tendulkar and Kapil Dev, Titan, Premier Pressure Cooker, Hero Puch and Asian Paints. The small studio called Panchathan Record Inn that he began is one of India's most well equipped and advanced recording studios today. Also, Rahman began a collection of sound samples - The most comprehensive sonic libraries in Asia. A lot has been talked about Rahman's conversion to Islam. In fact the quiet music composer even received a lot of flak for the same. It was in the year 1989 that Dileep Kumar and his family converted into Islam. It wasn't a very difficult decision to make as his mother Kareema Begum belonged to a Muslim family. Also, in 1988, one of his sisters fell seriously ill and in spite of the family's effort to cure her, her health deteriorated by the day. They happened to meet a Muslim Pir - Sheik Abdul Qadir Jeelani or Pir Qadri. His prayers and blessings did wonder for his sister who made a miraculous comeback to life. Thus began the journey of A.S.Dileep Kumar to A.R. Rahman. Life after Roja was very predictable for the young composer. He composed music for six films in 1993 and nine in 1994 including Maniratnam's Bombay (1995), starring Manisha Koirala and Arvind Swamy in the lead role. Shankar is a genius in his own right, and lending us with some insight about the bonhomie that he shares with ARR in itself is a revelation. Hi friends, let me be honest ... i am a big time ARR fan ... i purchase most of his albums on the day it is released ... somehow i felt Swades songs were not upto ARR standards ... am not denying that they were original and quality music ... i still rate Swades to average, but grading in terms of ARR standards ... but when it comes to BOSE, he is a pure genius ... the music is simply so refreshing and outstanding ... its filled with energy and feels so pure ... And when it comes to the big entertainers criticizing ARR, I feel it could be for other reasons ... let me try to explain ... when a child from india goes abroad to acheive better heights, his mom is the most happiest person ... but dont you think somewhere inside in this mom's heart is a thot of having her son return and live with her ... i beleive most people feel ARR should spend sometime concentrating on projects back home too ... these days we dont find albums like Roja, Gentleman, Jeans, Kadhalan, Rangeela etc ... where all the songs in the movie were creating sensation ... I wish ARR success in all his upcoming projects (especially in Tamil) ... I wish hope them to be so goood that people who are now criticizing ARR on not taking up projects back home (incl me to some extent), will finally shut-up :- ) ... What is ur say friends ??? Sunil, Dasun, and other ARRies Just by reading your response I feel that the time spent writing it out was well worth it. It is wonderful to see that true appreciators of ARR's talents pass-by the forums. Indeed, I also hope that one day ARR catches up on not just this message, but many others left by true fans, and reslises his real achievement - earning a large number of true fans in a very precarious industry, who understand and thoroughly appreciate the depth of his work. I hope our group can settle on this thought and save us all time from bickering on industry views criticizing the genius. Surely it is most attractive to thump the infallible from a journalistic point of view, but the audience at this group is smarter than that. Usually I pass by such comments but seeing an ARR fan waver between his intuition and societal response, it had to be answered. Most of us have and will in the future face ridicule for remaining a devotee of ARR, and I hope everyone who supports him despite the criticizm has a decent back-firing shot up their sleeves. I am not disturbed if others are a fan of SEL, Illayaraja, Stevie Wonder, Emenim, or Mozart - people have different tastes and let them be - it is their loss for forgoing the beauty in ARR numbers. But disrespecting ARR or a fan of ARR only shows me their inaptitude from a musical sense. Dasun, you asked about me.. When ARR was not discovered to me I lived in Gujarat. By the time I realised I had found a gem I was in NZ. And now when the glitters of this gem are thoroughly weaved into my lifestyle, I am in the US - currently I'm a graduate student in U. of Texas at Austin. (anyone else in austin?). Many fantastic peices of work have bombed, and besides the odd ones like Laagan, ones that do well have little more than the classic bollywood story and style to offer. If it were not for ARR and very few other talented actors and directors, I would not be paying attention to bollywood films or music! And by same reason I do pay attention to ARR's tamil albums, despite being a Northie. Clearly, popular music in no way exacts musical talent. The beats and melody (if even) are purely icing that fade away sooner than the commercials promoting them. What I find most shameful about the industry is that 95% of the tunes are 1) unoriginal and repetitive of their older work and/or 2) blatantly stolen under the ideal of inspired from.. and/or 3) of same or similar style with different instruments, arrangement, and singers and ( either 4. lack the the notes that press the right keys to convey the right emotions OR 5. posses the notes to convey an emotion, however those that have become too obvious in the industry i.e. lack the range OR 6. do this job well, and I respect those rare few, but lack the magical x-factor that ARR has proved to be carrying since Roja ) ARR's music, on the other hand, provides purity and shows integrity. First time I listen to any piece it is like an enigma. To an untrained ear like mine, it is a partial blurr. As I listen to it over and over, I uncover to more and more depth, what he is trying to convey in the song. The instruments, musical arrangement, background track, range of melodies, novelty of the overall work, and the special something he always fills up in the middle of the track. I definitely don't want to start a war here on this subject. In my opinion, Rahman is the best musician India has ever produced. Should he be denied an award that he deserves because he is young. ? I disagree with you when you say that Rahman has to rise to the level of the people you mentioned. In my opinion, Rahman has surpassed all of them years ago. I know we both can argue on this till the cows come home and still get nowhere. The only workable approach would be to quantify music, that of Rahman's and others and then compare them. Lets give every number a point (lets say between 1 and 10) and add it up for the whole life's work for every composer. I would expect to see a number for for Rahman which would be a few times that of the nearest composer. In 13 years Rahman has produced a phenomenal amount of music. If you only follow his Hindi music, Tamil is probably 2 times more. And, on top of that Rahman has been consistently doing 6-8 minute numbers. Most MDs struggle with a 3 minute song. I don't think anyone before Rahman dared to do a 7 or 8 minutes song on a regular basis. And, look at the diversity of his music, look at his international accomplishments. I can go on and on but I rest my case. Lets just say Kamal is more influenced with illayaraja's music than arr. That is understandable as kamal has done 100s of movies with illaya. Illayaraja is also a great MD in his times. I have as much regard to him as for arr. But thats it. thats individual preference. It all happens if one is the same profession. I don't think there is any rift b/w arr and sanu, but there is definitely a rift b/w sanu and udit narayan. That was long time back. ARR likes udit's voice more than sanu's. The thing is that the singer shud be content and be comfortable with the MD he's working for. Udit, SPB, Shankar, hariharan etc. don't mind singing in the night shifts and having patience and complementing each other.
