I second what Mohamed is trying to say here. arr wants to remain low and

ARR told us that we should be good human beings. So, as good human

 an enjoyable impact on ARR.

either we fans should unite in our own geographies and do some good

[arr] Rajnikanth's new Sultan - Zee News

2008-01-14 Thread Vithur
Rajnikanth's new avatar: Animated Sultan!*Zeenews Bureau*

Chennai, Jan 14: Rajnikanth fans are in for a treat. The Tamil superstar,
who has redefined the term 'Stardom' will soon, be seen as mythological,
larger than life character. But what, you may ask, is so great about Rajni
playing a larger than life character. Hasn't he always done that?

Well, that's where the novelty lies. For the first time in his glorious
career, Rajnikanth will be seen in an animation. And donning the director
hat would be none another than his daughter, the 23 year old Soundarya.

The animation film titled 'Sultan' is being developed at Chennai's Ocher
Studios. While the film is targeted at both adults and children, Soundarya
admits, making the film though is no child's play.

She is at the helm of the USD 10 million, full-length 3D animation film,
Sultan-The Warrior, being co-produced with Adlabs. The movie will be made in
12 languages including Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, English and even Japanese.

Animating a live-action hero is not easy at all because you have to get the
size precise and even facial features like the eyes and the nose precise,
she said.

She is leaving no stones unturned to ensure that the movie becomes a
benchmark for animation in the country. She even took the iconic actor to
Brussels for a body scan. 'I want him to be the first South East Asian actor
to ever be animated.

If that's not all, even the film's promise to be a cracker, since none other
than A R Rahman is composing the sound track.

The background score is very, very important for an animation. It's the
backbone of the film. The film's got four full-length songs, so Rahman sir
has taken a lot of effort and he's done a lot of homework on his own. We are
very excited about the music, says Soundarya.

In another first of sorts, the film will also have a separate English title
song. A search is on for an international singer.

The movie is expected to hit theatres by the end of this year.

With the makers clearly looking for a global platform for their film,
whether or not Sultan Rajni scores with the international audience, his fans
are already queuing up for the tickets.

[arr] NON-ARR: [Anu Malik's interview - irony at its best]

77*(1978) went on to create great music in films like
*Ek Jaan Hai Hum, Sohni Mahiwal, Mard, Sir, Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Ayee,

Vishkhttp://www.rediff.com/movies/2003/may/09ishq.htm,
*and many more.

That he has been accused of stealing tunes from the West has not affected
Malik's work list. This year sees him score the music for films like Sooraj
Barjatya's *Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon*, Apoorva Lakhia's *Mumbai Se Aaya Mere
Dost*, Madhur Bhandarkar's *Aan* and J P Dutta's *LoC*, among others. In
fact, the music of the first two films has already topped the charts.

The music director promises *Rajiv Vijayakar* that this is only the drizzle
before the sizzle. Excerpts from an interview:

*The Rajshris have only worked with (music director) Raamlaxman in all their
films. How did you manage to take his place?*

I have always wanted to work with the Rajshris. When his first film, *Maine
Pyar Kiya *[*in 1989, starring Salman Khan and Bhagyashree*] released, I was
floored by the film. I approached Rajbabu* -- *Sooraj's father -- for work,
even though I had made it by then. But I was told that Raamlaxman gave them
good music consistently.

After *Hum Saath Saath Hain *[*starring Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Monish
Behl, Karisma Kapoor, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam*]¸ I requested Sooraj
to give me a hearing at least. He told me that he was busy with a script and
that I should call him after six months.

We met after six months. I sang a tune that seemed to make his eyes sparkle,
but he did not comment. After 10 days I lost hope as that was the time when
my sittings with Karan Johar for *Kabhi Khushi Kabhie
Ghamhttp://www.rediff.com/entertai/2001/dec/12k3g.htm
* and Sanjay Leela Bhansali for
*Devdashttp://www.rediff.com/entertai/2002/jul/08dev.htm
* failed.

Then one day Sooraj phoned me and said, 'Welcome to the Rajshri family!' My
first reaction was 'Ye!'
**

*How was he to work with?*

His narration of *Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon* floored me. Sooraj would kneel
for four or five hours in a yoga posture and get carried away. It was like
watching the entire film through his eyes. At the very first narration, I
interrupted him with a tune, *Aaj main hoon, aur tum ho, aur mohabbat
hai. *This
was filmed on Abhishek Bachchan. Rajbabu, who was also present, said that in
25 years, he had never seen a composer who created a tune right there in
front of him. A lot of tunes were created during the narration itself.

Sooraj never made me feel that he was doing me a favour by giving me the
film, nor did he ever mention his past laurels.

*How did you choose your playback singers?[image: Kareena Kapoor, Hrithik
Roshan in MPKDH]*

I was told in 2000 that the music, which would be released after three
years, must sound fresh. I opted for Ranjit Barot for sound design, as we
had worked fabulously on Khalid Mohamed's *Fiza*, Rakesh Mehra's *Aks*, and
Santosh Sivan's *Asoka*. The singers were my suggestions for the same
reason. I think Chitra is at par with Lataji* *[*Mangeshkar*] and Ashaji [*
Bhosle*]. When I called Chitramaa -- that's what I call her -- she became
emotional, as she had never sung for a complete Hindi film before.

I chose KK because he had been typecast in high-pitched songs, even by me. I
wanted to make him sing romantic numbers. As for Shaan, whenever I hear him
I feel that Abhishek Bachchan is singing. Sunidhi Chauhan came in for the
passion, as she understands me in such songs.

*Your **Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost** has a riveting score too.*

Yes. Can you believe that the film was planned as a songless one?

*Your first spelling change proved lucky for you. But the second change last
year brought you bad luck. Is that why you have reverted to Anu Malik?*

Look, a man who is down experiments. But I have realised that only your work
matters, not the spelling of your name.

*After **Aks, Asoka** and Meghna Gulzar's **Filhaal**, you went through a
dull phase...*

The general scene was bad. But I think my albums, Anil Kumar's *Kucch To Hai
*and S J Suryah's *Khushi*, made profits for the music companies concerned.
**

*During this phase, even Subhash Ghai moved away from you.*

 those guys here who do
translations.. its much tougher than I thought :) My admiration for ARR
 as a person has
increased even more reading this interview (specially the last q). Proud
 to be a ARR fan.

  Here's the interview:

When you meet ARR, the first thing you notice is his simplicity. Starts
 speaking to you like
a classmate in college. Its been the same way this time as well

He pointed to the wall and said the keyboard and mixer were the ones
 used for Roja, Kept it
as a memorablia. ARR hasnt forgotten his past.

Q: SJ Surya mentioned in one KTV interview that 'Simplicity means AR
 Rahman'. How are you
  able to be without Ego.
ARR: We cannot plan these things. Once you become Spritualist, all egoes
 vanish. Why do
hindus keep ashes in their forehead? its to remind that we are all going
 to be ashes someday.
Money and fame last only till you live. Its enough if a man remembers
 the end, all evil
thoughts like 'Jelousy and wanting to live at the cost of others' vanish
 and you
  automatically get Fear and humbleness'

  Q: You sound very Philosophical?
ARR: Life has taught me a lot (Laughs). Once when I had been to
 Gulbarga, I bought a book
titled 'Isi Ahmadiya Dheen' [forgive me if I got this wrong]. It is a
 compilation of what the
world teaches us from the beginning. It was in simple short poems.
 Interesting as well. After
I read it I felt 'Is that all life is about'. Any one who reads this
 book would mature [I
need help on the correct word here please]

Q: You are busy with Kollywood, Bollywood and Hollywood. Do you have
 time for your family?
ARR: It is difficult. Manytimes, I may have to miss my family and kids
 for 2 - 3 months. In a
situation where you have to compromise on one thing, i have to resort to
 Video conferencing
to keep in touch with my family. My kids are not interested in costly
 things (for 10k, 15k).
All they ask for is for their father to be with them always and to
 shower love and praise on
them. Recently my second daughter asked me to come for her school
function, but I had to be
travelling abroad at that time. She told me. You wont come to my school
 function, but I have
to listen to your music is it? I wont listen from now on. I felt like a
 hard hit on my
temple. I postponed the function by 2 days and attended the school
 function. She was very
  happy.

Q: There is talk that Sakaraikatti is delayed because you have not
 composed the songs.
ARR: (laughs) They have made such a story is it? [said that in a nice
 tamil slang]. All
recordings except for 1 song is complete. When the director Kala Prabhu
 came and told me that
I will have to compose the music for this movie, I told them that I can
 do it immediately,
there might be a delay. He said, I will wait even if it will take 10
 years. No one would
delay for 10 years isnt it? (Laughs). I accepted because it was very
 interesting.

Q: During the Felicitation ceremony for your guru Gopalakrishnan, it
 seems you left as soon
  as you came in.
ARR: Firstly, he never knew that I was going to attend (the function). I
 went there to give
him a surprise. TVG was elated/emotional when he saw me there. I had a
 violin session for a
hindi song recording and hence had to leave and TVG knows that.

Q: What is the issue between you and Shah rukh Khan? It seems that you
 refused to do (music
  for) OSO.
ARR: We dont have any issues at a personal level. I was not able to do
 the music for the
movie because of an issue in the contract. They said, If the music
 composed for the movie is
used for any Hollywood movie, we would give you the title credit but
 will not pay you. In
this case it will be a problem in the future, not just for me but for
 any music director. So
  I refused.
As techonology grows, you dont know what (music) gets picked up from
 where. Suppose we give
away all the rights, anything can happen in the future. You shouldnt
 feel left blindfolded
then. There are so many MDs who have given their heard and sole to
 compose music and still
live in rented houses. Their music is still telecast in radios and tvs,
 but the unfortunate
thing is that they do not get anything back (monetarily). In overseas
 markets, a MD settles
down in a big way once you give 1 hit song.

the same old action/comedy/romance masala movies or boring old

Even the so-called rustic or realistic films in Tamil cinema these

There have been far too many Tamil films where there is a montage song
of various scenes of the boy and girl doing cutesy things like walking
 along the beach, talking, etc.

ARR is big and grand and there is no need for his work to get

Re: Fwd: [arr] ARR BIOGRAPHY

2008-01-14 Thread Shah Navas
Ok..now that everybody wants something or other from ARR. I(we) too have
my(our) wishes :)

Sometime back we had a expressed a desire see the process of song
composition for a song.

Saw that in parts in the 'making of Bombay Dreams'. But watching ARR compose
a complete song (might be spread over days) would be a treat. Hopefully
someday ARR accepts our wish and a video is released.

And a BIOGRAPHY is not definitely a bad idea. Why you all think we are
dictating ARR? Don't we have the right for a wish?(as long as we within
acceptable limits?) and we are not asking a autobiography. A biography (one
was released already by a fan in Dubai I guess, which was too costly) -
just a compilation of his life and works, others opinions, experience and
moments with him I am sure if that happens, everybody here(including the
ones from Roja days) would rush to get their copy. There is no better place
to start or collect data than this forum.

We all love him not just for his music. His work, life, interviews and
quotes will definitely inspire us and non-fans.

ARR doesn't want us to highlight him? I guess we are not really getting the
point. Acknowledgment is different from boasting. ARR set the standard by
acknowledging his musicians and technicians.

Gandhi was spiritual. But did he shun publicity? No. He infact wanted that
and wanted that for the right reasons.

Music is primarily ARR's passion and spiritual to him. But let us be
practical - He does care about money and publicity to the extent that they
don't come back interfere in his music. ARR worries when his albums are not
promoted properly. So do we. ARR deserves tribute (if not a cult status).

We are doing it for ARR just because we love him. ARR never asked and will
never ask anything from us. And all this voting for Bharat Ratna, Madame
Tussauds, Songs is just a way of showing love and affection by fans.
Please don't compare this to the political followers who want doctorate
honored to their leaders...

can we do in return is the question, and thats where I feel all fans

ARR told us that we should be good human beings. So, as good human

'Why can't we be original?'

Rajiv Vijayakar | June 02, 2003

The year 2003 sees music composer Anu Malik complete 25 years in the Hindi film
industry.

The man who started with the B-grade Hunterwali 77 (1978) went on to create
great music in films like Ek Jaan Hai Hum, Sohni Mahiwal, Mard, Sir, Phir Teri
Kahani Yaad Ayee, Baazigar, Imtihaan, Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Vijaypath, Akele
Hum Akele Tum, Border, Virasat, Tamanna,
Biwi No 1,
Fiza, Aks,
Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai, Asoka,
Filhaal, Khushi,
Ishq Vishk, and many more.

That he has been accused of stealing tunes from the West has not affected
Malik's work list. This year sees him score the music for films like Sooraj
Barjatya's
Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, Apoorva Lakhia's Mumbai Se Aaya Mere Dost, Madhur
Bhandarkar's Aan and J P Dutta's LoC, among others. In fact, the music of the
first two films has already topped the charts.

The music director promises Rajiv Vijayakar that this is only the drizzle
before the sizzle. Excerpts from an interview:

The Rajshris have only worked with (music director) Raamlaxman in all their
films. How did you manage to take his place?

I have always wanted to work with the Rajshris. When his first film, Maine Pyar
Kiya [in 1989, starring Salman Khan and Bhagyashree] released, I was floored by
the film. I approached Rajbabu
-- Sooraj's father -- for work, even though I had made it by then. But I was
told that Raamlaxman gave them good music consistently.

After Hum Saath Saath Hain [starring Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Monish Behl,
Karisma Kapoor, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam]¸ I requested Sooraj to give me
a hearing at least. He told me that he was busy with a script and that I should
call him after six months.

We met after six months. I sang a tune that seemed to make his eyes sparkle,
but he did not comment. After 10 days I lost hope as that was the time when my
sittings with Karan Johar for
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Sanjay Leela Bhansali for
Devdas failed.

Then one day Sooraj phoned me and said, 'Welcome to the Rajshri family!' My
first reaction was 'Ye!'

How was he to work with?

His narration of Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon floored me. Sooraj would kneel for
four or five hours in a yoga posture and get carried away. It was like watching
the entire film through his eyes. At the very first narration, I interrupted
him with a tune,
Aaj main hoon, aur tum ho, aur mohabbat hai. This was filmed on Abhishek
Bachchan. Rajbabu, who was also present, said that in 25 years, he had never
seen a composer who created a tune right there in front of him. A lot of tunes
were created during the narration itself.

Sooraj never made me feel that he was doing me a favour by giving me the film,
nor did he ever mention his past laurels.

How did you choose your playback singers?

I was told in 2000 that the music, which would be released after three years,
must sound fresh. I opted for Ranjit Barot for sound design, as we had worked
fabulously on Khalid Mohamed's
Fiza, Rakesh Mehra's Aks, and Santosh Sivan's Asoka. The singers were my
suggestions for the same reason. I think Chitra is at par with Lataji
[Mangeshkar] and Ashaji [
Bhosle]. When I called Chitramaa -- that's what I call her -- she became
emotional, as she had never sung for a complete Hindi film before.

I chose KK because he had been typecast in high-pitched songs, even by me. I
wanted to make him sing romantic numbers. As for Shaan, whenever I hear him I
feel that Abhishek Bachchan is singing. Sunidhi Chauhan came in for the
passion, as she understands me in such songs.

Your Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost has a riveting score too.

Yes. Can you believe that the film was planned as a songless one?

Your first spelling change proved lucky for you. But the second change last
year brought you bad luck. Is that why you have reverted to Anu Malik?

Look, a man who is down experiments. But I have realised that only your work
matters, not the spelling of your name.

After Aks, Asoka and Meghna Gulzar's Filhaal, you went through a dull phase...

The general scene was bad. But I think my albums, Anil Kumar's Kucch To Hai and
S J Suryah's Khushi, made profits for the music companies concerned.

During this phase, even Subhash Ghai moved away from you.

It was Subhash Ghai's choice to come to me or move away. I learnt a lot from
him. But if I am grateful to him for the

Hi,

I would like to take a shot at answering this
question.

If u r saying the first song he retuned was even
before 'pudhiya mugam' kannukku mai azhagu song...then
i would reckon it should be from the movie
GENTLEMAN-yen veetu thotathil.

If i remember correctly this tune is actually used in
singing a particular bhajan song sung at hindu poojas.
It goes something like ganne leela jyoti namo namo,
gnaana roopa swaroopa namo namo and so on(sorry .. i
m sure i got the lyrics wrong).

But rahman wonderfully i wud say polished the tune of
that song, added his own huge dose of originality and
violawe had i wud say one of the most romantic
classical duets, till date i can listen to that song
and not feel bored or anything.

Another notable thing i wud say is that, this song
also started the trend within all rahman-shanker
combos, where even though the album wud be fraught
with fun-filled dhool tp songs-huge dance numbers,
there wil always be this one soft romantic classical
based song in it-which would be i wud say one of the
biggest hits of the album as it wud impress the
so-called masses and classes!!!

e.g:
GENTLEMAN - yen veetu thotathil(SPB is king!)

KAADHALAN - ennavalae(major carnatic singer
Unnikrishnan came into national limelight with this
song)

INDIAN - telephone manipol(the stanzas ooze with
carnatic classical icing, plus harini had her major
first masses hit)

JEANS - kannodu kaanbadhellam(introduced major
carnatic songer Nithyashree into mainstream tamil
movies)

MUDHALVAN - azhagaana ratchasiyae( even though this
song was given a folky feel, it was out and out a
wonderfully playful composition in the raagam
'rithigoula' and ghatam rocked thru the song)

BOYS - alle alle(refrained frm making it sound too
carnatic as well it wud have been out of place in the
movie...but yet again the lone melodious track in the
album)

*ANNIYAN - iyengaaru veetu azhagi kumaari( Shankar
tried it again with harris jayaraj...going for 2
songs, first being a very very basic composition in
raagam naattai and a much better job in the latter
song thanks to a zestful rendering by shankar
mahadevan...
PS: I have always wondered how rahman cud have rocked
in this movie so much..seriyaana theeni[proper fodder]
for rahman's versatility..i mean the iyengar angle so
the carnatic based songs, the wester loverboy angle
where he cud go all rock and hip-hop,then we have the
avenger vigilante, where he cud go all modern
operatic[without ripping of PASSION OF THE CHRIST
which is wat harris jayaraj eventually did]..but alas
one wil never kno wat rahman cud have done...jus like
we can never kno wat rahman had composed for droh
kaal..one of those things...

LAST BUT NOT LEAST
SIVAJI - sahana and sahara( the first one has jus been
named song of the year by sun TV so enuf said abt
that, and in the latter he actually used a thirupaavai
merging it with a titantic melancholy flute
feel..kudos)

AHEM...er...i jus saw the whole mail frm top... i
guess i slightly veered of in a tangent(horrible
understatement)...But i have answered the question to
my best knowledge on the top and sorry for
belaboring...but jus that it was a worthy interesting
observation.

Thanks..

Re: Fwd: [arr] ARR BIOGRAPHY

2008-01-14 Thread Prashanth Murali Nottath
I agree fully with Aminji. Also it's way too early to make a biography
of the genius. And regarding acknowledgement, the very fact there
exists people like us who eat, drink and sleep Arr is more gratifying
for the master than any book or stuff.

On 14/01/2008, Shah Navas [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I think it's more owing to lack of time, than any other care. The
genius's hands are full with multilingual assignments. He himself
clarified that position in an interview some time back.

And let's not forget, he made lagaan for a new director, similarly
jillunu kadhal, A T M, etc. He is at present having sakarakatti also.

The problem is that there really are no strong directors in Tamil
cinema of the current generation. No Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, no
Ashutosh Gowariker. Nobody with any freshness. Everyone is making
the same old action/comedy/romance masala movies or boring old
romances. Nothing invigorating. So how, in this climate, is ARR
supposed to be inspired to create something brilliant?

Even the so-called rustic or realistic films in Tamil cinema these
days are the same old stories with similar song situations as well.
There have been far too many Tamil films where there is a montage song
of various scenes of the boy and girl doing cutesy things like walking

Very rarely, ARR does masala movies in Tamil. ATM was also lil

ARR is big and grand and there is no need for his work to get

[arr] Sultan News

2008-01-14 Thread Vithur
http://www.nowrunning.com/news/news.aspx?it=13447

Superstar Rajinikanth's younger daughter Soundarya launched the theatrical
trailer of what is claimed to be India's biggest 3D animated feature film,
titled Sultan the Warrior on Jan. 13 in Chennai. The Rs 40 crore-film,
directed by Soundarya and produced by Ocher and Adlabs, profiles her
legendary father.

The superstar himself acts in the film and lends his voice. Also launched
along with the trailer was a short film on the making of Sultan the
Warrior.

An 80-member team is working on the film which would be completed by the end
of this year. Vairamuthu has written all four songs for the film and A.R.
Rehman scores the music.

Talking to mediapersons, Soundarya, who did her Multimedia course at an
Australian university, made it clear that she has no intention of becoming
an actress and she would only direct films. She had earlier worked for
Chandramukhi and Sivaji: the boss. Some animated films had been produced
in India but not on the scale of Sultan the Warrior. Moreover, no such film
had been made on any other superstar in the country, she claimed.

She said that before agreeing to act in the film, her father had raised some
doubts and she in her capacity as the director, cleared them. She narrated
the story to him and explained how an animated film was made.

She is making the film as a fan of Rajini and so it would meet all the
expectations of Rajini fans. The superstar's inimitable style, mannerism,
punch dialogues, stunts, etc would all be there. There would also be a
villain and a comedian. Would Sultan have his heroine? Yes, of course. But
this character is created through animation, Soundarya said.

My father is happy and proud that I am a director. And I am proud of
directing him, she said.

Replying to mediapersons' questions, Soundarya said she would continue
directing films after completing Sultan. She wants to direct especially
films featuring her father.

Asked whether she would act and direct, she stressed that she would like to
be behind the camera. She denied any connection between Sultan and
Robot.

Latha Rajinikanth, chairman of Ocher, was present with Soundarya when she
talked to the mediapersons.

Bollywood's loss is going to be the Western world's gain.

A R Rahman is deliberately turning down big assignments here because of
copyright and royalty issues regarding music sales. The reticent retainer of
the raga and rhythm is reluctant to discuss the issue.

It's too complicated. But, yes, the issues do stop me from accepting more
Bollywood offers. Those who want to work with me in Mumbai but won't agree
to my conditions, are going to other composers. At the moment, I've also cut
down film assignments because I want to focus on creating a Western-classic
music conservatory in India. With this I hope to bridge the gap between
Western classical and Indian ragas. Imagine a thumri being played by an
orchestra! Or a Carnatic raga being a part of a big Hollywood epic, said
Rahman.

The musical visionary says he needs to take his music to another level now.
I can't be doing just films, films, films all my life, said Rahman. But
whenever I work in Mumbai, I give my fullest concentration, as I did for
Ashutosh Gowariker's Jodhaa Akbar , which I'm proud of.

However, international assignments are getting more prominent in Rahman's
career. I enjoyed doing Shekhar Kapoor's Elizabeth — The Golden Age . Now
my music for the stage adaptation of The Lord Of The Rings is ready. The
album is being released in Feb.

Rahman sees this album as his big international leap. Every song has a
minimum of 200 musicians and technicians involved in it. Huge choirs and
orchestras were brought into play. We recorded the album in London and mixed
it in my studio at Chennai. The whole crew came down from all over the
world. All the songs are in English and in Elvish...the language of The
Lord Of The Rings. I had lots of help from fellow musicians like
Christopher Nightingale. It took me three years to do the album.

Looking back, Rahman is not the least content with his achievements. It's
never enough, he rued. Music is my only therapy. There're so many awful
things happening in the world. I wish I could heal the world. My peace
anthems like Vande Mataram and Pray For Me, Brother are a small candle light
in the storm. But you never know which candle will light a thousand other
candles

Lets get real. Downloading is there at many levels which we cannot deny.
But what is more important is to actually buy the CD as soon as it is

One shud not change their minds on buying the original after they
get hold of good quality mp3s.

Even the so-called rustic or realistic films in Tamil cinema these

There have been far too many Tamil films where there is a montage song

We are doing it for ARR just because we love him. ARR never asked and
 will

Please don't compare this to the political followers who want doctorate

[arr] (arr) Superstar, now Sultan

2008-01-14 Thread Srinivasa Krishnan V
* Superstar, now Sultan * Cinema Soundarya Rajnikant's Sultan The Warrior
promises some romance, some villainy, some comedy – and of course plenty of
action. SUDHISH KAMATH reports PHOTO: S.R.Raghunathan

* Doing dad proud Soundarya * The pointed shoes of a warrior kicks up some
dust. The camera swoops down to the ruins where we spot the lone warrior as
his robe gently flutters in the wind. He brandishes his mighty shining
sword. The camera pans upwards to reveal his face. ItR 17;s Superstar,
looking about 20 years younger, he has an ear-ring and almost meditatively
blinks for half a second. A film by Soundarya Rajnikant, reads the title
card. A low angle shows him raise the sword as he kneels to flash it at the
camera. Cut to the title card which reads: Superstar Rajnikant in and as…We
see him posing right atop a minar, he dives in slow-motion and descends
majestically, like Neo in The Matrix… only that, here the setting is
medieval. And, BlaaZe begins his Sultan rap in English as swordsmen who
probably worked in Frank Miller's 300 try to attack Superstar from all
sides. Next comes the part where they all go flying in different directions,
crashing into bamboo. And a mid-shot shows Superstar swagger towards us in
slow-motion. Speaking different languages

Sultan The Warrior has begun his journey and he'll reach cinemas around
the world speaking in 12 different languages. There's a heroine, there's a
comedian, there's a villain… As an *appa* fan myself, whatever you expect
from his films, I've made sure you will find it in this film too. It's an
amazing feeling directing my father, first-time director and second
daughter, Soundarya Rajnikant told mediapersons at the launch of the Sultan
Trailer 2. The first teaser trailer was out when Sivaji released last
year.

As a father, he was very, very proud. As an actor, he was so understanding.
Initially, we talked about whatever doubts he had and after that, he was
very supportive.

 A. R. Rahman will compose five songs. We will also have one English title
song for which we are trying to rope in an international artiste. Thota
Tharrani has done the art direction. This trailer and the movie will be
executed in Chennai by the 80-member Ocher team in Chennai, she said,
speaking about her collaboration with Adlabs.

Soundarya seemed unfazed by the questions. In the first half of the press
meet, she made sure she covered the vitals: thanked parents, dedicated the
film to her father, boosted the team's morale by introducing them, credited
Adlabs for funding the 10 million-dollar project. Her team had spent the
last six to eight months doing pre-production. And she assured journalists
and fans present at INOX for the launch of the trailer that Sultan would be
technically one of the superior quality films we've seen in India. She
probably saw the questions coming. Will you act? Never in front of the
camera, always behind. Will she direct commercial films? Definitely, by
God's grace. Apparently, Sultan is not rooted in the Ramayana or the
Mahabharata. It's not a story you would've heard before. It is *appa*'s
story, I did the screenplay. It's a fresh script I've animated. It's my
dedication to my father's contribution to the film industry, a daughter's
gift to her father.

'Sultan' will have whatever you've seen my father do, until now, with new
elements added to it… Again, in animation, the sky is the limit. There are
no restrictions, if I want to take the camera and zoom it in 100 km, I can
do it in animation… Since there are no restrictions in possibilities, in
terms of *appa*'s mannerisms and gimmicks in 'Sultan', you can see it a 100
times. There are many 'punch dialogues' in the film, I have written a couple
already.

Offended by a question posed by a journalist earlier (If Soundarya was doing
it to promote her father or her father was doing it to promote her),
Chairman of Ocher, Latha Rajnikant sought to clarify: This is a film that
will make India and Tamil Nadu proud. It gives skilled people an
opportunity, a platform. We are not creating a platform for ourselves, it is
for others. It was too early to reveal more about the story, she said. More
details in December. Watch this space.

Imagine a thumri being played by an
orchestra! Or a Carnatic raga being a part of a big Hollywood epic, said
 Rahman.

The musical visionary says he needs to take his music to another level
now. I can't be doing just films, films, films all my life, said Rahman.
But whenever I work in Mumbai, I give my fullest concentration, as I did
for Ashutosh Gowariker's Jodhaa Akbar , which I'm proud of.

My peace
anthems like Vande Mataram and Pray For Me, Brother are a small candle
light in the storm. But you never know which candle will light a thousand
 other candles

I'll believe it when I hear or see about it. Due to all the delays,
this has been the most frustrating ARR release ever. Will there be

who else have guts like this I'm really really PROUD of our BOSS as
keeps his words always.

But at the sametime other MDs should also start think of this issue. Only
one MD alone can't fight and win over the big issue

Other MDs must be so happy to accept the offers which ARR turns down. Its so
horrible; poor MDs. They should think on their own

I admire you a lot, my BOSS Keep going... The whole world will
listen to your music very soon...

Cheers,
Siraj

[arr] [Semi-ARR?] Shekar Kapur to make Bollywood film

2008-01-14 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
More baloney from the man who has announced more films than he has made

Shekhar plans to return to his roots

Shekhar Kapoor is back to where he actually belongs — Bollywood. The
internationally-acclaimed director now wants to come out of the Elizabeth mode.
Shekhar is seriously thinking about making Bollywood films with desi actors.
The last Hindi flick he made was Mr India and we hear he is planning to make a
film called Mantra. This one will be a complete masala film, based on magic and
supernatural forces.
Shekhar promises that it will be the next biggest thing after Mr India.
“I
am planning to cast Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role. Let’s see if it
works out, I have seen the boy’s work and he has immense potential,”
says Shekhar.
For the lady lead, he is considering Deepika or Sonam, but is yet to finalise
anyone.
“I might cast a completely new face, but I’m yet to decide on that,” he says.
Sources say Shekhar is persuading Javed Akhtar to write his film’s script.
