Guys,

Can we get the pieces of ARR's interview videos that ARR plays keyboard /
 piano?
During the early 90's interviews, he used to play in the interview, it was
all great when listening to him playing the instrument, but all just lasts
 as a snap.

Would be a great collection if we can get that.

Subject: [arr] Re: Hesham Abdul Wahab - Idea Star Singer

The void left by the late Shahul hameed (one of ARR's fav voices
) can only be filled by Hesham Abdul Wahab or a singer like him...

It is truly amazing how Hesham's voice hits the high registers and a
couple of songs he sang were so good that they outshone even the original.

i really hope ARR looks at Hesham as he must have been missing a
Shahul Hameed voice for a long time.

Hesham's Khwaja mere Khwaja and ghazal were so good that ARR will take
a note of him.

Thanks for mentioning hesham here... Though in the din created by
recent albums I am not sure if this message will even be seen by members

2008-02-09 Thread balajirajagopal
All - Today's Economic Times had Aamir khan as it's guest editor. There
was an interesting discussion on the importance of scripts in movies.
One of the participants Abbas Tyrewala (dialogues Munnabhai MBBS) made
a very pertinent remark on the dearth of good scriptwriters in the
Indian (hindi) movie scene and said just like ARR arrived and gave a
different dimension to music and made ppl go back into the theatres and
listen to the songs, in the similar way one needed a genius script
writer to arrive at the scene (or something like this) Whoever has
read it, pls post the discussion. Made for very interesting reading

Cheers!

A. R. Rahman says : You are right. Mr Dakshinamurthy has

Thank you Arshitha.V

A. R. Rahman says : I've not seen any great innovation in

polyphonic touch. I might have missed something which is already there.

wow I kidna like it! i didnt think you can have that kinda perspective
on this song but I actually enjoyed it...sometimes the techno
instruments felt a bit heavy and kinda made the song unclear ...also
it felt kinda not crisp enough and kinda messy at times...

but the overall effort is simply great! thanks for sharing

meeting You. Hope we will meet soon. All The Best For Ur Future Projects.
Warm Regards To You and Your Family.
*A. R. Rahman says* : You are right. Mr Dakshinamurthy has composed a
beautiful album from the Tamil Sufi text of Gunangudi Mastan based on
Carnatic ragas. Though we have done around six songs, we are still finding
it difficult to find the time to complete the other songs. But it's a very
 passionate project.Do wait for it.

 Name: Arshitha V
Question: Hi Rahman Sir. How are you? As we all know that Technology is
having a great impact in the world of music, how are you able to keep
yourself abreast with the current technology? Also, do you feel that you
need more contributions from the world of science to music? I value your
opinion a lot on this. Thank you Arshitha.V
*A. R. Rahman says* : I've not seen any great innovation in instruments
recently except for a few which is the continium fingerboard and a very
unique instrument in north India where a person has combined a violin and a
Sarangi.Indian music could have a great scientific instrument emulating
all the gamakas and ragas with a polyphonic touch. I might have missed
 something which is already there.

 Hi
 Guysss

 February

 2008,

 PM

 Director
 Kathir,
 who
 has
 successful
 films
 like
 Idhayam,
 Kadhal
 Desam
 and
 Kadhalar
 Dhinam,
 is
 back
 in
 Kollywood
 after
 a
 brief
 hiatus.
 The
 director's
 previous
 release,
 Kadhal
 Virus,
 was
 a
 disaster
 at
 the
 box-office
 despite
 A.R.
 Rahman's
 melodious
 tunes.

 The
 buzz
 is
 that
 Bharath,
 who
 has
 had
 a
 decent
 outing
 as
 a
 mass
 hero
 in
 Pazhani,
 will
 play
 the
 male
 lead.
 However,
 sources
 say
 that
 this
 might
 be
 mere
 speculation
 as
 the
 actor
 will
 be
 teaming
 up
 with
 director
 Suresh
 Krishna
 after
 his
 current
 project
 Seval
 with
 director
 Hari.

 Kathir
 is
 well-known
 for
 his
 saccharine
 love
 stories,
 enchanting
 visuals
 and
 mellifluous
 music.
 In
 fact,
 music
 has
 been
 a
 strong
 point
 in
 all
 of
 Kathir's
 films,
 right
 from
 his
 debut
 Idhayam.
 While
 Idhayam
 had
 music
 by
 maestro
 Ilayaraja,
 all
 his
 following
 ventures--Uzhavan,
 Kadhal
 Desam,
 Kadhalar
 Dhinam
 and
 Kadhal
 Virus
 were
 composed
 by
 `Isai
 Puyal'
 A.R.
 Rahman.

 It
 is
 expected
 that
 the
 Isai
 Puyal,
 a
 good
 friend
 of
 Kathir,
 will
 be
 the
 composer
 of
 the
 new
 venture
 too.
 One
 hopes
 that
 Kathir
 will
 make
 a
 successful
 re-entry
 and
 wipe
 away
 memories
 of
 the
 Kadhal
 Virus
 disaster.

 ALL

Re: [arr] CHAT with ARR ....in an hour... at Rediff

2008-02-09 Thread Thulasi Ram
i found these:

A. R. Rahman says : I read most of your questions thought I will just pick
and choose the ones I felt like answering due to lack of time. I thank you
for taking your time for writing all those beautiful kind words.

A. R. Rahman says :

Name: MAHESH LONDHE
Question: I personally feel 1947 Earth is your all time best Music. I am
not at all against synthesizer or latest techniques but have a strong
opinion that Music is nothing but Feelings and therefore a song should be
recorded in one go without a break as it was practice previously. What is
your opinion ?
A. R. Rahman says : Thank you very much. I definitely have a lot of freedom
when I work with Deepa Mehta, since she doesnt nitpick into every little
thing. She just gives the general idea and disappears till we make beautiful
music for her and she responds later. Freedom is very important in the
process of creating music and songs. There are a lot of issues when we
record music together, because even if one person is not right, then the
whole recording becomes unusable. Hence, by the use of multi-tracks, we
definitely try to simulate the seamlessness in a song. But the practice is
still on. The music of Lord of the Rings, the musical, and Golden Age, which
I recorded recently were all with a live orchestra in one of the most
prestigious studios in London

Name: Aravind AM
Question: Sir, In most of your songs, there are very minute and very fine
sounds -which may hardly be noticeable to a normal listener, but if we
actually notice them, we appreciate the sheer brilliance. What motivates to
to make all those fine nuances in your songs, though the efforts that you
put in for beautifying the song may not reach the audience?
A. R. Rahman says : There is a story of Michelangelo -- if I am not wrong --
which I heard recently. It seems that he was painting beautiful pictures at
the back of the church. People told him you are a fool because you are not
painting in the front where people can appreciate your work. The answer was:
I do my work for God to watch it. I think he can watch it anywhere. I
thought it was a brilliant answer because everything doesnt need to have

Question: Still i feel that quality and sounds of Roja songs are far
better than your recent ones. What is the main reason for that? are you
missing Sridar and other sound engineers?
A. R. Rahman says : At the time of Roja, the consumer music systems used
were of lower qualities and we had to cater to a mono-magnetic tape. Hence
we had to exaggerate the high frequencies and use a lot of spacializers.
Things have changed in the course of time and we are right now taken a
universal approach in the sound quality to make our recordings sound warm
and friendly to every system. That covers the recording part. The sounds
which you say were inspired from the film of Roja definitely another film

all other things are easier to handle.

[arr] ARR Concert - CHENNAI - Feb 09th, 2008

2008-02-09 Thread Vithur
Dear Rahmaniacs,

Let me take this opportunity to brief all fellow Rahmaniacs, about the
Concert in YMCA Grounds in Chennai yesterday night. It was a memorable
occassion for we Fans , as we represented ourselves as a group, and were
there to shout , whistle around and enjoy his Divine Music in his immediate
Presence.

List of Singers :-

1. Mohammed Aslam , Chinmayee, Blazeee, Ujjayineee, Benny Dayal, Naresh
Iyer, Chitra, Hariharan, Sayanora, Tanvi, Raihana Israth, Dr. Narayanan

The concert started at about 7 : 30 Pm, with a Guitar Presentation by
Prasanna Keith Peters, along with their group of other instrumentalists.

ARR 's programme started at about 8 PM. He started with Jaage Hain,
followed by a list of wonderful songs which are as follows :-

1. Khalbali
2. Loose Control
3. Maduraikku Pogadheee
4. Nee Maryln Monroe
5. Kannalane
6. Anjali Anjali
7. Uyire
8. Kaadhal Rojave , Tamizha Tamizha
9. Vaaji Vaaji
10. Sivaji ( Vaada Song ) :- Blaz
11. Azeeem O Shahensha
12. Jashn E Bahaara
13. Sahaana Saaral
14. Dil Se re

The songs came out very fine. But there was a lack of noticebale excitement
from the crowd, (though we fans were actually shouting and going mad, )which
made ARR ask Are you all people sleeping ???. The security arrangements
were not planned and excuted properly, and I heard that even the family
members of some of the performers were not alllowed for lack of Invitations
etc ( Mrs. Keith Peters was not allowed )

It was also very sad to know that ARR wanted to meet a group of Fans, but we
were not not allowed near ARR, and ARR himself was forced to enter his
Vehicle immediately after the end of the concert.

I would request Our dear brother Nazeeef Mohammed to add more of his
thoughts on this mail.

[arr] Chinmayee Blog - CHENNAI concert

2008-02-09 Thread Vithur
http://chinmayisripada.blogspot.com/2008/02/a-r-rahman-live-life-concert.html

Happened at YMCA grounds today for an invited audience. Organized by MARG, I
was fortunate to be a part of this concert. Hariharan ji, Chitra ji, Blaaze,
Sivamani ji, Aslam Naresh Iyer, Tanvi, Rayhana ji and Ishrathi ji, Dr
Narayan, Neeti Mohan, Ujjaiyini, Benny Dayal, Sayonara and I were the
singers.

During the rehearsals yesterday there was this short session where Hari ji,
Aslam and Dr Narayan were sitting around and Hari ji was like giving us a
mini class on how to execute speed. It was enough to just hear him sing. I
had grown up on a staple diet of his Ghazals.

I got to sing Kaadhal Rojave, Vaaji and Vennilave with Hari ji, Maduraikku
pogadhedee with Benny and Tere Bina. There was an unplugged session with
Chitra and Hari ji after which I sang a few lines of Sahana in a scale God
knows where I caught from!

After the concert, Mom and I happened to get talking to Neeti and when she
was saying there are thousands of people out there who are dying to be
standing on the same area as Rahman sir, not to mention sing with him. Also,
this was Rahman sir's first concert for 2008 and it happened in Chennai.
This is also my first major concert for this year, though I did have a
couple of corporate shows earlier in January.
2007 started at Bombay at the Nokia New Year's eve concert with Rahman sir,
and the year was brilliant. Somehow I attach quite a lot of sentiments as
long as Rahman sir's concerts are concerned. I wish I could have sung
better, somehow and the depression is going to last a few months at least.
These are times that I wish the earth would swallow me up or that I never
existed at all. bleargh.

There are no photographs because we forgot to take the camera. If you see
any on the web somewhere please do send them across to me :)

If sources are to be believed, renowned music composer A R Rehman will be
going to London for the music launch of a play called Lord of the Rings.
Lord of the Rings is a play adapted by the same Oscar award winning film.
Rehman has done the entire score of this play.

It is also believed that Rehman has approached Universal Music Company to
release his album of Lord of the Rings . We spoke to Sunil D'Sa, Managing
Director Sales, Universal Music who confirmed the news saying, Yes Rehman
is in talks with Universal to release the music of his LOTR album. But
nothing has been finalized as yet.

However our source informs us that the music launch will be in London and
Rehman will be leaving for it in the last week of February.

Rehman who composed for Shekhar Kapoor's Elizabeth: The Golden Age , is open
to other Hollywood projects as well. He had earlier composed for the
Broadway musical Bombay Dreams . His chartbuster composition Chaiyya Chaiyya
from Dil Se was used as the end credits for Denzil Washington's film Inside

 onal-voices/http://celluloidrant.wordpress.com/2008/02/06/unconventional-voices/
Rehman has had his favourites over the years — Hariharan and Sukhwindara
Singh come to mind instantly. But every once in a while, he has made an
inspired choice that completely transforms a number from good to great.
These aren't conventional voices, and wouldn't work for most songs. But you
cannot imagine how certain songs would sound if sung by someone else. Here
are my top five picks in this category (links attached, in case you wanna
 lusten to them):
 5. *Raasaathi* (*Thiruda Thiruda*): My favourite song in that album. Also,
one of the songs that Shahul Hameed is best remembered for, other than
 *Usilampatti
pennkutti* in *Gentleman*. Other than probably a base guitar somewhere in
the background (and I'm not even sure about that), this song is *a capella
*, with a lot of humming in the background and Shahul's plaintive voice in
 the lead. (Listen here http://www.dishant.com/album/Thiruda-Thiruda.html
 )
 4. *Chikubukku chikubukku rayile* (*Gentleman*): Basically, this one makes
the grade because of how it reinvents Tamil pronunciation. If someone spoke
the language like that in my presence, I would have to physically restrain
myself from punching his lights out, but the song… well, I can't imagine any
other way to sing it. (Listen
 herehttp://www.raaga.com/channels/tamil/movie/T053.html
 )
 3. *Lukka Chhuppi* (*Rang De Basanti*): I love Lata Mangeshkar, okay? My
dad's an old Hindi film music buff, so I grew up listening to her. But
hearing her sing *Jiya Jale *in *Dil Se* was the musical equivalent of
seeing Rajni romance Deepika Padukone. Her voice sounded tired, strained,
and clearly much older than the woman being depicted on screen. To me, that
song is one of Rehman's eminently forgettable choices. But *Lukka Chhuppi*…
who else could have conveyed Waheeda Rehman's heartbreak at losing her son
so well? The opening lines are simple enough: *We've played enough hide
and seek/Now come out and show yourself*. The tune isn't exactly a sad one
either. But the evident ageing of Lata's voice and the tragedy being
depicted on screen make it what it is. I don't think there are too many
instances where Lata's voice would qualify as unconventional, but my guess
is that most music directors would've ended up using a much younger voice
here. Rehman chose well, and it made all the difference. (Listen
 herehttp://www.dishant.com/album/rang-de-basanti.html
 )
 1. *Vidai kodu engal naade* (*Kannathil Muthamittal*): The scene depicts a
village of Sri Lankan Tamils being evacuated before the airforce bombs the
place into oblivion. No matter what your politics, the sight a bunch of
people leaving the place they had called home for so many years is, you will
agree, heart-rending. The lyrics convey a sense of loss that remains with
you long after the movie has ended. But what truly elavates the song is the
quality of M S Viswanathan' s voice. You don't hear finely modulated sorrow,
but something raw and visceral. (Listen
 herehttp://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/tamil/s/movie_name.4619
 )

[arr] Mughal-era epic - Jodha Akbar

2008-02-09 Thread Vithur
Hopeful Gowarikar has a lot riding on Mughal-era epic

http://www.thetimes.co.za/Entertainment/Movies/Article.aspx?id=702041
 Published:Feb 10, 2008
--

In this digital age, few challenges are as daunting as making an authentic
historical romance that will work its magic at the box office.

The last person to try it, Akbar Khan, learnt that to his detriment two
years ago with Taj Mahal. The following year JP Dutta's version of Umrao
Jaan bit the dust, and in recent times the only title to gain acceptance was
the remastered version of K Asif's Mughal-e-Azam, a 1960 original that was
re-released in 2004 and took many by surprise.

It's worth remembering that Asif needed 10 years to make that
career-defining film. So, has Ashutosh Gowarikar, who took just over a year
to complete his magnum opus, been over-ambitious or will Friday's release,
Jodhaa Akbar, buck the trend?

If early indications are anything to go by, the director of Lagaan and
Swades has positioned himself to do what no one else has done with any
measure of authority for well over three decades — since HS Rawail's 1974
release Laila Majnu — and that is to resuscitate the genre.

The lead pair, Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai, are as good as they get.
Gowarikar says he had joked with them that they would only have to pitch up
on set, as they were the reincarnation of Akbar and Jodhaa.

The fact that they clicked in Dhoom 2 played no part in his decision to cast
them. His mind was made up five years ago when scriptwriter Haider Ali
broached the subject. Convincing them was a breeze: all he said to Aish was,
You'll be my Jodhaa, and she leapt at the chance; as for Hrithik,
Gowarikar told him, 16th century, the Mughals and Akbar, and that was
that.

Besides the dashing lead pair, Gowarikar had other factors in his favour,
including AR Rahman's music score.

Four choreographers, Raju Khan, Ash Kumar, Chinni Prakash and Rekha Prakash,
were enlisted for the dance sequences. The latter pair took 15 days to
complete one song, the stunning Azeem O'Shaan Shahenshah, in which 1000
dancers in traditional costumes and wielding swords and shields took part.

Add Kiran Deohan's cinematography and Nitin Desai's sets, and the opulence
so essential to a period piece is certainly in place. Attention was paid to
the tiniest details. Top designer Neeta Lulla said the challenge of
designing the costumes was too good to refuse, and specialist jeweller
Tanish was appointed to craft specific pieces.

The movie focuses on a relationship that supposedly altered the course of
history. It delves into the political conspiracies of the period and tells
of the alliance between the Mughal emperor Jallaludin Mohammed Akbar and
Rajput princess Jodhaa. Gowarikar des- cribes it as a perfect arranged
marriage.

Akbar's proposal was based not so much on his affection for her but on a
desire to expand his empire eastward from Afghanistan to the Bay of Bengal,
and south from the Himalayas to the Godhavari River. Love developed later.

His strategy to achieve this expansion was to win over the Rajputs, and this
marriage with a motive helped him to remove the bitterness and distrust the
native Hindus felt towards the invading Mughals, and that, in turn, softened
the Mughals' attitude towards them.

This led to Akbar establishing deen-e-elahi, or the divine faith, to
reconcile the sectarian differences that divided his subjects by suggesting
that no single reli- gion had a monopoly on the truth.

Jodhaa was not merely a pretty wallflower. A fiery Rajput who was skilled in
the art of sword-fighting, she wasn't an easy conquest and she refused to be
a political pawn in Akbar's designs to capture her land.

Gowarikar enlisted scholars and historians from New Delhi, Aligarh, Lucknow,
Agra and Jaipur to scrutinise the script, and while he has acknowledged
exercising a measure of creative licence, that did not prevent his
detractors from voicing their objections.

The Rajput Sabha demanded the right to approve his script, fearing gross
distortions. The Sabha contends that Gowarikar is wrong in stating that
Jodhaa Bai was the daughter of the ruler of Amer, Bharmal, since historical
records show only one Jodhaa Bai, who was the daughter of the ruler of
Marwar, Udai Singh, and who was married to Akbar's son, Jahangir.

The director hopes he'll get away with it by suggesting that his story is
about a chapter that may have been a part of history but was not
officially recorded.

He maintains there is enough evidence to show that Akbar the Great had a
very special attachment to Jodhaa Bai and that the period referred to was
when they were between the ages of 18 and 26, and was therefore not
documented.

There have been other problems for Gowarikar. An animal anti-cruelty
organisation has questioned whether he had the necessary permits to shoot
scenes with elephants, camels and horses.

Shooting at some of India's famous monuments proved another hurdle. India's

[arr] Singer Madhushree 's Interview

Madhushree on her victory in 'Jhoom India', her music album and Bollywood
projects.

If the voice of Jhoom India winner Madhushree sounded familiar, you are not
mistaken. Because, she is the same singer who has given us hits like Kabhi
neem neem (Yuva), Hum hain is pal yaahan (Kisna), Pal pal hain (Swades) and
Tum bin bataye (Rang De Basanti). The lady with the golden voice spent some
time with *Sunday Herald* and spoke about her tutelage, music and of course,
A R Rahman.

*Sachin Tyagi (partner in Jhoom India) and you were rocking and way ahead of
competition. But what made you participate in Jhoom India?
*
There are multiple reasons behind my taking up the challenge in Jhoom India.
First is the changing scenario of playback singing in Bollywood. Today it is
no longer a behind-the-scenes profession— a lot of importance is given to
your 'face value'. So, participating in a reality show is almost a natural
thing for a singer to do.

Then, a number of my fans wanted to see the person behind the voice and
Jhoom India gave me a good forum to take care of this request. And last but
not the least, this show was completely different from the normal
run-of-the-mill reality shows. In Jhoom India, I had to train a celebrity
actor to sing. There was a charm and challenge attached to it which I could
not refuse!

   I
want to dedicate this victory to my husband, Ravi Badal without whom I could
not have made it. And I must also mention the contribution of my father
Amarendranath Bhattacharjee and my guru Dr Amiya Ranjan Banerjee.

Without them a career in music would not have been possible.

*You had a good partner in Sachin Tyagi. His deep voice and emotional
singing did make it easier for your team to move ahead.

*To be honest, I did have a hunch that we will go a long way in the show.
The first time I heard Sachin sing, I knew that if groomed properly, he can
be a fabulous singer. That's what I did. We used to practice a minimum of
three hours every day! Kudos to him for his focussed effort and hard work
that made all the difference. I think our victory in Jhoom India once again
proves that nothing can replace hardwork and dedication.

*I think yours was the only pair that did not fight on the stage or do
histrionics to get votes!

*(Smiles) That is because we used to fight off-screen! To be honest, we
never wanted to grab extra attention by having mock fights on screen.

But we did have a lot of arguments and differences in opinions during
selecting our songs. Every time Sachin would come up with a really tough
song and I would say 'no' to it and we used to land up having an argument.
To be honest, we wanted to play the game based on just our singing skills
and not any histrionics. And both Sachin and I are very happy that our hard
work paid off. In fact, you may call it my luck, but I have always won
competitions since childhood. Be it India or abroad, I have always been
lucky when it comes to competitions!

*So, what are your future plans? Any new albums you are working on?

*I am extremely busy with a semi-classical album which is due to be
published soon. You will hear me singing all traditional thumris in the
album. I am quite happy with the way it is shaping up. My husband is
arranging the music for the album.

*You seem to be singing only for A R Rahman. Everyone knows that you are one
of his favourite singers, but any particular reason for not singing with
other music directors?

*Though it is true that most of my songs are A R Rahman's, but it is wrong
to say that I have worked only with him. I have sung for Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy
and Rajesh Roshan as well. *Having said that, there is no denying the fact
that Rahman knows my style very well and we share a good rapport.
*
I know that he will call me only if the song suits my voice. My fans and
well wishers always say that Rahman makes certain songs for me. I think that
is a big compliment! I think other composers will also approach me when they
have a good song for me!

*What are the new songs you have recorded in the recent past?

*In Jodhaa Akbar, I have sung In Lamhon Mein with Sonu Nigam. I have also
recorded for Shantanu Moitra in Shayam Benegal's Mahadev with KK.

   Gomtesh,

You might want to consider apologizing to Dev. We are privileged to
have him in the group. Dev has, to his credit, a distinguished career
in visual effects and works for no less that the iconic ILM
(Industrial Light and Magic). Check out his IMDB listing

Sorry to post this in this forum or my apologies, if this
 is an
already discussed topic-came across this peice of news...
Sukhwinder Singh was spotted after Hollywood heard Chaiyya
 chaiyya
  in
Spike lee's Inside man-the song became popular in the west
 and our

good old sukhwinder has been roped in for composing a fresh
 track
  for
  SS.
I hope he gives ARR credit for being what he is, and the
 song that
  he
has sung that has given him this status!
