three sisters, Rehana (Kanchana), Fatima Talat (Bala) and Israth. He is
married to Saira and has three children - Khatija, Rahima and Amin.
Rahman is an alumni of the PSBB Lake Area School, Nungambakkam, Chennai.
His nephew G. V. Prakash Kumar is a composer in the Tamil film
industry.Son of Rehana (Kanchana). His father died when Rahman was nine
years old, and his family rented out musical equipment as a source of
income. Rahman converted to Islam after a personal family incident and
was a student at PSBB for a short while before changing schools.

During these early years, Rahman served as a keyboardist and an arranger
in bands such as Roots with friends, embracing numerous music genres.
He played the keyboard and piano, in addition to, among others, the
synthesizer, the harmonium and the guitar. His curiosity in the
synthesizer in particular increased because, he says, it was the
ideal combination of music and technology. He began training
in Carnatic music. At the age of 11, he joined, as a keyboardist, the
troupe of Indian composer Ilaiyaraaja, one of many composers to whom
musical instruments belonging to Rahman's father were rented to. Rahman
later played in the orchestra of M. S. Viswanathan and Ramesh Naidu,
accompanied Zakir Hussain and Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan on world tours and
obtained scholarship to Trinity College at Oxford University, where he
graduated with a degree in Western classical music.

In 1991, Rahman began his own studio, attached to his house, called the
Panchathan Record Inn. He initially composed music for advertisements,
the title music of Indian Television channels and music in
documentaries, among other projects. In 1992, he was approached by film
director Mani Ratnam to compose the score and soundtrack for Ratnam's
Tamil language film Roja. The debut led Rahman to receive the Rajat
Kamal award for Best Music Director at the National Film Awards, the
first time ever by a first-time film composer. From there he didn't
look back. Whatever he done became classics.

not only Kamal, anyone who kicks-off a movie without any planning
should be blamed for this. it is understood that one cant predict whats going
to happen in the middle. but, only when the official signed contract is done,
kamal should have approached ARR to compose songs. now, ARRs time and some
beautiful tunes are shelved. ARR wouldl not even get a renumeration for this.
atleast, ARR could have accepted Ashutosh's project... kamal having learnt a
lesson during maruthanayagam should have thought about this in detail. but it
hasnt been done. so, this is really wired and bad on the management side.

also, Mr.Ghai... why the heck would he start motherland/homeland movie, make
ARR to compose bunch of songs and then shelve the movie waste of ARRs time?
also, this happened once for a movie that was supposed to kickstart before
taal. ARR could have used that time to score music for a movie like anniyan or
dasavatharam.
i hope yuvvraaj does well in BO. if not i wish ARR stays away from Ghai for
couple of decades...

i really worry for ARR and i just wonder how will the genius feel for landing
into such unplanned projects and wasting time and previous tunes, and getting
NOTHING out of it.

Marmayogi shelved?

It is almost certain that the much talked about Kamal Hassan magnum opus
Marmayogi has been dropped. Pyramid Saimira who were to jointly produce it with
Rajkamal International, is reported to have pulled out of the project due to
lack of finance.

Ever since the colossal failure of Kuselan Pyramid Saimira has been caught in a
financial crunch out of which it looks seemingly impossible to come out. Kamal,
the perfectionist if he has to make Marmayogi can do it only on a huge canvass
and that requires big money, nearly Rs 100 crore.
Now the market buzz is that Kamal is starting a new venture Thalaivan
Irukkiraan, for Gemini Films Circuit, who had done 'Vasool Raja MBBS' earlier
with the star. Gemini is trying to make the film on a budget of Rs 50 to Rs 60
crore, in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Malayalam . An offical announcement is
expected shortly once the star cast and technicians are firmed up.
As per the rumours making the rounds it is going to be an action packed
adventure film to be shot in US and Switzerland. It will have a galaxy of stars
from all Indian languages like Rishi Kapoor, Venkatesh and Mohanlal. The film
will have music by A R Rahman and will be written and directed by Kamal Hassan.

Nice to see all of you unequivocally liking and praising guzarish.

Still, i think I should raise my minority voice of one that I am not
liking it much.

probably because:
- It is too verbose. Lot of words

- It is too fast.

- It does not exhibit the grandeur that ARR's most of the work in this
year have shown.

- lyrics appear artificial and forced, just fitting rhyming words in any
sort of sentence without conveying any purposeful meaning. Prasoon had
written much better lyrics in RDB.

- I personally find that ye, ye, ye, ye irritating. Comes up so suddenly
, unexpectedly breaking the flow of a soft love song.

It sounds more in the genre of Dil Hi Dil Mein songs ( the feel/ mood/
style)

Among the verbose/fast songs of ARR, 47 Earth's Rut AA Gayi Rey was much
better, sweet, had variety whereas guzarish sounds same 10 seconds
repeated 6 times, sort
 of.

Could be the poor quality of recording (probably recorded from some TV
add and then extracted).

Could be the small duration, only starting 1 minute so the entire scene
didn't unfold.

For all the hype surrounding Ghajini, I was expected something lot more
marvelous from ARR.

Let's see how the full song and full album comes out.

Slumdog Millionaire is set in Mumbai and adapted to the big screen
from
  Vikas Swarup's novel Q A.
In other words: there's a good chance movie goers aren't familiar
with a
  single aspect of this film.

  But
it doesn't matter. The surprisingly mesmerizing story focuses on a
poor
but plucky and industrious Muslim boy named Jamal (played by Dev
Patel as a
young man). He receives an opportunity at becoming a millionaire
on an Indian TV quiz show that's at once lurid, garish, and exciting.
It's a combination of Bollywood meeting Hollywood.
The motivation for Jamal to take on this show's challenge? His
love for
Latika, a friend who is a big fan of the series.
Director Danny Boyles is fanatic at depitcing the paradoxes of
Western culture when it infiltrates Third world countries such as
India or
  Africa.
As Jamal succeeds on the show, he's faced with charges of fraud
because everyone figures a boy in his position must be cheating. Jamal
must explain to the police how he came to acquire knowledge that is
generally unavailable to someone of his class and educational level.
Each answer relates to an aspect of Jamal's life and that of his
older brother Salim and Latika, the girl he has loved since he was
seven. It's moving stuff, focusing on poverty and crime at all levels
  of society

Even the camera work is well done, as viewers are often taken
through the
  streets and
shantytown alleys at the speed of the sprinting kids themselves. One's

[arr] Another SdM review

2008-11-11 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
'Slumdog Millionaire' is a clever twist on traditional storylines
10 hours ago
Despite the exotic nature of its foreign locale — the teeming,
impoverished streets of Mumbai, India - Slumdog Millionaire is every
inch a Danny Boyle film.
The hope within the squalor, the humour
within the violence, they're all thematic trademarks of the British
director of the druggie drama Trainspotting and the zombie saga 28
Days Later. Only this time, Boyle takes his wildly high-energy visual
esthetic and applies it to a story that, at its core, is really rather
sweet and traditionally crowd-pleasing.
The unassuming Dev Patel
stars as our slumdog underdog, Jamal, an 18-year-old who comes from
nothing but is on the verge of winning more money than anyone's ever
won before on the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?
The game show's host (an ideally smarmy and egotistical Anil Kapoor)
grows unshakably suspicious as Jamal prepares to face one last question
for the top prize of 20 million rupees and has him hauled in for police
questioning (by the ever-imposing Irrfan Khan).
Simon Beaufoy's
complex script, based loosely on the Vikas Swarup novel Q A,
glides effortlessly among Jamal's interrogation, his unlikely success
in the television hot seat and his rough-and-tumble upbringing, which
provided the life lessons that serve him so miraculously well now.
Jamal
reflects upon the desperate times he shared with his older brother,
Salim (Madhur Mittal), after their mother was killed in a savage
anti-Muslim attack. He remembers the cruelty of the Fagin-like figure
who forced them and other orphans into slavery. And he recalls fondly
the time he spent with Latika (stunning former model Freida Pinto), his
first love who, as a scared child, became the brothers' third
Musketeer. (Loveleen Tandan, who cast the film - including the three
sets of actors who play the main characters at various ages - did so
much behind-the-scenes work, she gets a co-director credit.)
Maybe
it's a bit too clever that every question in the game show just happens
to have some connection to Jamal's vividly Dickensian life, from his
encounter with a blind child panhandler to the unfortunate reason he
knows what a Colt .45 is. But that's the point: witnessing the uplift
of the charmed new life Jamal can now call his own.
Slumdog
Millionaire won't let him forget where he came from, though. The mad
dashes through Mumbai's most cramped corners provide a dizzy thrill
with their off-kilter camera angles, despite the dismal scenery (in
that regard, the film shares an inescapable bond with Fernando
Meirelles' equally unflinching City of God). Occasionally, though,
Boyle will take a moment to catch his breath - and let us catch ours -
as he does in a striking overhead shot of the patchwork of tin roofs
under which these children make their makeshift homes.
The
cinematography from Anthony Dod Mantle (who also shot 28 Days Later)
gives even the most depressing images an unexpected beauty, with Chris
Dickens' expert editing keeping the considerable action moving fluidly.
But
then in the third act, Slumdog Millionaire takes an unfortunately
conventional turn, when everything until then had felt so fresh and
new. The mob bosses who rule Mumbai, and with whom the arrogant Salim
has aligned himself, are depicted as singularly snarling caricatures.
And the relationship between Jamal and Latika, delicate as it is,
reveals them to be little more than a familiar pair of star-crossed
lovers trying to find their way back to each other. Nevertheless,
realism permeates even that aspect of the film: She's pragmatic, he's
romantic.
The absolute ending is a joy, though, so please make
sure you stick around for it. After all the heavy, emotionally
wrenching material that preceded it for two hours, it's the perfect
final answer.

Three stars out of four.

[arr] Film journal reviews SdM

2008-11-11 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Film Review: Slumdog Millionaire
High-energy picaresque of a poor Indian boy’s rise to fame on a TV quiz show
should be another solid hit for Fox Searchlight.
Nov 10, 2008
-By Kevin Lally

For movie details, please click here.
Will there someday be a subgenre of films inspired by “Who Wants to
Be a Millionaire?” The international TV quiz-show phenomenon, which
uses the same format, set and music cues no matter the country,
already played a role in the climax of Patrice Leconte’s French
comedy My Best Friend, and now it’s the centerpiece of Danny
Boyle’s Mumbai-based Slumdog Millionaire. The participation
of “Millionaire” production company Celador may raise a red flag,
but this is a bracingly energetic and original story of struggle,
survival, upward mobility and romantic yearning that should be a
major art-house crossover hit.

Adapting from the novel Q A by Vikas Swarup,
screenwriter Simon Beaufoy (The Full Monty) sustains the
clever conceit of revealing the life story of unlikely young
“Millionaire” contestant Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) through the
reasons behind his successful answers to the questions posed by
preening host Prem (veteran Bollywood star Anil Kapoor). The
framing device is a brutal interrogation by police who are
convinced this uneducated “slumdog” must be cheating.

Boyle uses three actors each to portray the three central
characters at different ages: brothers Jamal and Salim, born in
poverty and prematurely orphaned, and Latika, the spirited homeless
girl they bond with. Their odyssey is downright Dickensian, as the
trio is taken into the fold of a sleazy entrepreneur who turns
orphaned children into an army of street beggars, cruelly blinding
the occasional boy to make him even more pitiable to passersby.
Jamal and Salim escape their overseer’s clutches, but poor Latika
falls back and is left behind. Smitten with the young girl, Jamal
makes it his life’s mission to find Latika and rescue her.

Subsequent episodes show the brothers conning tourists as
unauthorized guides to the Taj Mahal, then charting radically
different paths: Jamal as a chai wallah (tea vendor) at one
of those ubiquitous Indian phone-call centers, Salim rising to the
inner ranks of the Mumbai criminal underworld. Jamal’s reunion with
Latika, now a gangster’s mistress, is a key piece of the story’s
puzzle, leading to a climax filled with romance, melodrama and
suspense.

Filming in a dizzying array of real-life locations with the
ever-moving digital camera of Anthony Dod Mantle (The Last King
of Scotland, Boyle’s 28 Days Later and Millions),
Boyle again proves himself one of modern cinema’s most deft
high-energy directors. His portrait of today’s India is vibrant,
fascinating, and filled with both shocking squalor and exotic
beauty.

Slumdog Millionaire couldn’t be as accessible as it is
without shrewd casting, and all three trios of young actors playing
the leads are highly appealing. Dev Patel of the BBC teen-angst
series “Skins” is disarming as the older Jamal, bringing both
vulnerability and quiet strength to the movie’s main role. Madhur
Mittal maintains our sympathy for the brother who takes the wrong
path, and lovely Freida Pinto as the mature Latika is a heroine
worth fighting for. Indian icon Kapoor is amusing as the conceited
quiz-show host, and Irrfan Khan (last seen as the father in Mira
Nair’s The Namesake) lends depth to the potentially
thankless role of Jamal’s fierce police nemesis.

Clever, stylish and highly entertaining, Slumdog Millionaire is one of the rare
foreign-language films with potential to reach a
big stateside audience.

Slumdog Millionaire ReviewReview by Mr. Shrek

One's

head is spinning as one gets to know this unique world like never

  before.

Mark our words: Slumdog Millionaire will be nominated for Best

Picture.

To be frank, I have rarely seen a MD appreciating other MDs truthfully
from heart,
but I have seen ARR do that whenever he is asked such questions.
once Rahman had mentioned that Harris is doing good these days, i
think tht was 2 years back things. But I have never seen him praising
Arr, actually I dont want comment abt Harris, but the way u posted ur
questions sure doubts Rahmans authenticity with music. I believe
rahman is true to his heart whwnever he is asked any questions not
like ppl who behave differently just in front of media.

[arr] What should I say when people say ARR lifted songs?

2008-11-11 Thread pratap
What should I say when people say ARR lifted songs? Harris Jeyaraj is often
accused as no1 copy cat. He actually uses BGMs of other songs into his but the
tune of the song remains original. His latest song Mundhinam from Vaaranam
Aayiram used the same guitar BGM from George Michael's Faith. And there MANY
more such examples. The point is ARR did the EXACTLY the same thing with a
couple of songs. If Harris is a copy cat because of these, then ARR will be the
same too. That is not what we want

A R Rahman [Tamil]

Hello Mr. ethirkatchi [Film: Iruvar]

The opening piano part definitely inspired. Source: Dave Grusin's

The background rythm and beats inspired from the song 'rescue me' by

released in 1965.

The rythm has been used. However, the tune of the song
remains original.

Oh sure, the beats are copied. Tune original!

   Is A R Rahman a fan of

The rhythm loop

Subject: [arr] When Subhash Ghai Got
 Emotional - It's touching...

Subhash Ghai recently got very overwhelmed with emotions at the
music launch of his soon to be released musical extravaganza `Yuvvraaj'. While
the occasion was very important to him, there was one special guest who made it
all the more extraordinary for him and that was Karima Begum, mother of musical
maestro A.R. Rahman.

It was for the first time that Karima Begum made her public appearance. She
flew all the way from her home town Chennai to Mumbai just to inaugurate the
Music of `Yuvvraaj' where she presented the first CD to Subhashji.

Subhashji still gets emotional reminiscing the day After the music
inauguration of `Yuvvraaj' I went to my room and while contemplating about the
entire day I remembered my own late mother who made me what I am today…she
taught me the value of relationships, love, she brought music to my life and of
course the significance of blessings from near and dear ones. I was very close
to my
mother and even though she is not around but I can still feel her presence
even today. When I first met Karimaji, I found the same love, simplicity and
power in her; she brought the same smile on my face as my mom did. Yuvvraaj's
music is scorching heights on the music charts all over the world and it has to
be a blessing up from above.

Yuvvraaj produced by Mukta Arts Limited, will release on 21st November, 2008

RE: [arr] Pressure On ARR

2008-11-11 Thread Abdul Manaf
Nice views. Did u remember that how many albums HJ did and how many become mega
hit like ghajini.? You said that ARR on pressure. What pressure.? ARR will do
ghajini his own style. No need to care about tamil version.

danny wrote:
First of all lemme tell you that I am a die-hard ARR fan, i've

following his music from Roja - yuvraaj, and always wished his music
to stand above all.. I've always felt that Rahman shouldn't have
committed Ghajini simply because Harris Jayaraaj did a fabulous job in
the Tamil Version of it.. It was really unfair not to give him the
chance in Hindi too.. It was too much pressure on Rahman to bring
something above the songs that Harris(He used to assist Rahman before)
did, and what more 'Guzarish' falls short of 'Sutrum Vizhi'.. His
friendship with Aamir might have made Rahman commit Ghajini.. As a
wellwisher and diehard fan i would like to see Rahman on Top always..
with less pressure he would come back for sure

About the tracklist, I'm really liking it that Shreya is in this album
a lot. A bit worried that there are only 5 songs. Also, just hope
that there are not too many songs like Shano Shano in this album, and
more songs like Zindagi and Tu Muskura. Hope the album is high in
melody and style.

 - lyrics appear artificial and forced, just fitting rhyming words in
any
sort of sentence without conveying any purposeful meaning. Prasoon had
written much better lyrics in RDB.

 - I personally find that ye, ye, ye, ye irritating. Comes up so
suddenly
, unexpectedly breaking the flow of a soft love song.

It sounds more in the genre of Dil Hi Dil Mein songs ( the feel/ mood/
 style)

Among the verbose/fast songs of ARR, 47 Earth's Rut AA Gayi Rey was
much
better, sweet, had variety whereas guzarish sounds same 10 seconds
 repeated 6 times, sort
  of.

Could be the poor quality of recording (probably recorded from some TV
 add and then extracted).

Could be the small duration, only starting 1 minute so the entire scene
 didn't unfold.

For all the hype surrounding Ghajini, I was expected something lot more
 marvelous from ARR.

Let's see how the full song and full album comes out.

rightly pointed out. ghai must delay yuvraj for better script than complaining
music being delayed. storyline is doubtful on screens. rahman infact has given

where does senior most Ghai (interviewer tagged word Legend to ghai) stands

when i was watching the legends of music the other day, the interviewer asked
a very tricky yet sensible question on an important aspect of music. she asked
ARR if he gets musical block. ARR genuinely answered, s there were instances he
had to handle musical block but during those instances he would carry out the
other part of the creating a song.. i.e percussions, mixing etc...

this afternoon when i was humming minnale song from may madham
something immediately struck when i was humming vaarthai vara kaathirukum
kavigan illaya [(isn't there a poet/lyricist waiting for a word strike his
mind (to pen down a poem?)]... what happens when a lyricist faces this
situation in front of a director or MD? oh, that's bad...

musical block should be a real enemy for any music director and after watching
the interview i just understood ARR is no exception from this phenomenon. this
musical genius is also a normal human being in one context and directors,
producers and fans tend to play with his patience every now and then may be
ARR can use the shelved songs when he gets any sort of musical block... i hate
those directors who reserve those shelved song for their future and never think
about it again.

Mr.Ghai will u ever try to release that motherland songs? huh... and this man,
was almost complaining in the NDTV interview that ARR took more time to compose
music for his movie...yuvvraaj is the answer; i m going to wait...

By movietalkies
Tuesday Nov 13 3:18 PM

Director Shekhar Kapur had been intending to revive his project, Time
Machine but has instead given away the rights of the film to Aamir
Khan, who will now be producing it.

Intially Shekhar wanted to start the project all over again with the
film's original cast, which includes Rekha and Naseeruddin Shah and
Aamir. However, since Shekhar had other crucial plans up his sleeve,
he decide to give the film's script to Aamir. According to sources,
the actor will now zero in on a director to take charge of the
project. The script of Time Machine has a lot of humour in it and so
Aamir is looking for a director who can handle comedy well. He seems
to be quite taken by Raju Hirani and the Munnabhai series. But he is
yet to take a decision on the matter. According to sources, Aamir will
make a change in the cast. When Shekhar had launched the film, Amrish
Puri had a major role to play in it. But since the actor is no more,
he will have to be replaced by another actor. Naseer is also not
likely to be part of the project anymore. Aamir also plans to cast
another actress in place of Raveena Tandon. A final decision on who
will replace Amrish Puri and Naseer is yet to be taken although.

This was supposed to have ARR as the music director. Since its gonna
be revived can any1 confirm ARR is still associated with the project
or not?

I totally agree with you on the above. When an MD has done a good work
in a language, he should be given a chance in the other language
versions of the movie. Harris has worked in Hindi also, and his music
had a freshness, a different feel. I think he should have been given a
chance in Hindi Ghajini also.

However, the decision is in the hands of the Producer/ director of the
film. They somehow decided to hire ARR for Hindi version. I am sure that
it was their sole decision and it was not because of any approach made
of lobbying done by ARR.

The producer/ director must have their reasons for doing so. but ARR
can't be held responsible for their decision.

It was too much pressure on Rahman to bring
something above the songs that Harris(He used to assist Rahman before)
 did,

ha, ha, ha.

Pressure on ARR? A creative person's mind works wonders under pressure.
ARR is the most creative among today's breed, if at all he felt under
such a pressure, it would encourage him to give even better music.

and what more 'Guzarish' falls short of 'Sutrum Vizhi'..

I am not liking Guzarish much, but I still think what I have heard in
HJ's hindi music, that doesn't make him better than ARR in any count. HJ
is a promising kid and he should learn and experiment and improvise.

 His
friendship with Aamir might have made Rahman commit Ghajini..

I also think so.

Anything wrong in that? ARR is not a thankless person at all. Aamir has
given great films to ARR and their combo did wonders till now. ARR is
thankful to Aamir and he can't say no to him. What is wrong in that?

 As a

What kind of a wellwisher and diehard fan you actually are when you find

Re: [arr] Classical Extemporization 4m Roja 2 Yuvvraj's ARR

2008-11-11 Thread Prabhu Rajagopal
who is this person! such a fascinating read! even though i don't know
anything about raagas..
hope you can provide us with his next article he is talking about..

2008/10/28 Vithur [EMAIL PROTECTED]

   Classical Extemporization 4m Roja 2 Yuvvraj's ARR *October 26,
2008….12:17 P.M.*, at this point of time, if you ask any person well
versed in various forms of Indian Classical Music (probably a guru or a
maestro) that is the same pattern which was actually contrived by Muthuswami
Dikshitar and Thyagaraja still being taught to this generation, the answer
would be a clear NO…because there has been a sea change in the time frames
and generations and thereby, a few changes were evolved in teaching the
music so as to vibe well with the tastes of the generations. Ofcourse, there
was no change done to the root part, the swaras and the raagas being the
 same!

It was in 1992 when the music wizard *A.R.Rahman* composed the tunes for
his first filmy album Roja...He was 26 then. Now at 42, he composed the
tunes for his latest offing, Yuvvraaj. So taking a cue from the above
stance, one can wonder the amount of change that had been evolved in his
composing styles in this time-gap of 16 years!

Now its 2008…Down the lane after 16 years, I feel that I have harnessed a
commendable knowledge in analyzing the songs of Rahman. So, please take your
valuable time out to go through this piece! There are many styles of music
in which Rahman had forayed into but I would like to throw light only on his
 classical compositions
The first song of Rahman to which I listened was Nila Kaigirathu from
Indira ('coz that was the first ever film I watched)…At that point of
time, I don't know who Rahman was but that song did haunt me like a diva in
 my sporadic dreams!

The first raaga I learnt was *Mayamalava gowla* and that was followed by a
chain of raagas after which I took a break to analyse the songs based on the
learnt raagas…Indeed, the first song I analysed was Nila Kaigirathu . It
is strongly based on *Hamir Kalyani*.

Pudhu Vellai Mazhai from Roja was a master-piece based on *Kapi*. The
moment I heard Mannmohini Morey, I thought it was a rendition on *Kapi*.
But after a few times of hearing made me confirm that it was the alaap of
*Aabheri (Ni Sa Ga Ma Pa)*! Rahman composed only one song, Kannodu
Kanbathellam from Jeans based on *Aabheri*. It requires quite a high
pitch. Nithyashree Mahadevan was absolutely great in that song as is Vijay
Prakash in this song. When I compared the composing styles of Rahman in both
these songs, I felt that he mixed that song with *Sudha Dhanyasi* and made
it a raagamalika while he made a fusion of Aabheri in western in Mannmohini!
What a transition!! I rate it as the best number of the album.

The moment I heard Tu Muskura…It made me remind of the Sonnalum
Ketpadhillai from Kadhal Virus which was based on *Nalinakanthi*. The
interludes embedded in the song are purely western yet the base of the song
is in *Hamsadhwani*. I was flabbergasted at the way Rahman mixed this song
on such low notes with western loops. Then I realized that only a Rahman can
do this sort of song! Alka Yagnik sounded better even on such low note and
Javed Ali is apt for his Hindustani alaap. The song is best suited to have a
 perfect evening!

*Melody-Rhythm-Lyrical Beauty*…these are the 3 pillars on which Carnatic
Music is based on…and that is exactly what I have witnessed in Zindagi….Gulzar
explaining the various modes of life and Srinivas taking you through the
modes while Rahman is providing the fuel to the song. The song is etched on
the raaga *Saranga*….It made me reminiscent of Azhage Sugama (based on *
Dhwijavathi* and *Sahana*) from Paarthale Paravasam. The varied styles in
the pace of the song make it a celestial number! Here one can witness the
contemporary style of Rahman, composing a melody!!

An euphonious song is what I can say about Tu Hi Meri Dost Hain…It is
probably the best example of western symphony Rahman is talking about these
days and I guess this is the theme which he is trying to infuse in KMMC.
This song can be simply listened for its lyrics…

*Kabhi dil ka hai saahil, Jahan shaam utarti hai

Kehte hain samundar se, Ek pari guzarti hai

Wo raat ki raani hai, Sargam par chalti hai *

Gulzar Saab can be credited with his impeccable work. Without his lyrics,
this song wouldn't have been rooted in the ears of listeners. A hundred time
listener… I might be sounding vague coz its more than a hundred time
listener! Wish that Rahman will come up with some more songs of this genre
 in his forthcoming albums.

How can I forget the resplendent works of A.R.Rahman in Kandukondain
Kandukondain? Kannamochi (based on *Nattakuranji*) and Thongi Choose(based on
*Kathanukathagulam*) deeply evoke my feelings till date…The same Rahman I
get to hear listening to these master-piece songs from Yuvvraaj although
in a different way! The way Rahman is

Frndz, let us share our views on GHAJINI credit titles track listing.

I think it's good that, this time we'll get an instrumental numbers.
Probably for the first time Neil Mukherjee will have a solo
performance (along with Kiran) to be featured. This person is a very
talented guy from Kolkata. He had been playing for ARR sir for many a
years (from Pukar to even GURU). He was one of the pioneers of bengali
rock music movement in Kolkata along with many others like Bonnie
Chakraborty. After ARR called him he shifted his base to Chennai now
plays as session musician for many MDs. I think he was the person to
introduce Bonnie to ARR. He is an incredible performer with his
signature 8-strings guiters on stage !! Hope to see best of him in
GHAJINI.

In GUZARISH song there are strong bass lines, i think plaed by
legendary Keith Peters. But, his name is not mentioned inlike other
albums.

Let's see how the full song and full album comes

Slumdog Millionaire
Starring: Dev Patel, Freida Pinito

Directed by: Danny Boyle

RS: 3.5of 4 Stars Average User Rating: 4of 4 Stars

What I feel for this movie isn't just admiration, it's mad love. And I
couldn't be more surprised. The plot reeks of uplift: An illiterate slum
kid from Mumbai goes on the local TV version of Who Wants to Be a
Millionaire and comes off like a brainiac. Who wants to see that? Final
answer: You do. Slumdog Millionaire has the goods to bust out as a
scrappy contender in the Oscar race. It's modern India standing in for a
world in full economic spin. It's an explosion of color and light with
the darkness ever ready to invade. It's a family film of shocking
brutality, a romance haunted by sexual abuse, a fantasy of wealth fueled
by crushing poverty.

You won't find many fairy tales that open with a graphic torture scene.
The cops think 18-year-old Jamal Malik (a sensational Dev Patel) is a
fraud. Goaded by the show's host (the superb Anil Kapoor), the police
inspector (Irrfan Khan) is determined to beat the truth out of Jamal
before he goes back on the show and hits the jackpot of 20 million
rupees. Presumably this is not the way Regis Philbin ran things when the
show hit America in 1999.

Brimming with humor and heartbreak, Slumdog Millionaire meets at the
border of art and commerce and lets one flow into the other as if that
were the natural order of things. Sweet. Screenwriter Simon Beaufoy (The
Full Monty) brings focus to Q A, the episodic Vikas Swarup novel on
which the film is based. Still, the MVP here is Danny Boyle, who directs
the film brilliantly. Boyle is the Irish-Catholic working-class Brit who
put his surreal mark on zombies (28 Days Later) and smack addicts
(Trainspotting), and made us see ourselves in their blood wars. Those
movies were so potent, as was his 1994 debut, Shallow Grave, that we
looked the other way when Boyle went Hollywood with The Beach and
screwed up with A Life Less Ordinary. Somehow we knew that Boyle had the
stuff to work miracles.

Here's the proof. We learn the history of Jamal and the other principal
characters in flashbacks, as Jamal answers questions on the TV show not
from book knowledge — he has none — but his own life
experiences. Jamal is searching for two people from his childhood: his
wild older brother Salim (an outstanding Madhur Mittal), now a thief and
killer, and his adored Latika (the achingly lovely Freida Pinto), now
stepping up from child prostitute to plaything of a gangster. Every
incident, including the brothers' watching their mother die in an
anti-Muslim riot, feeds into Jamal's answers on the show. OK, the
concept bends coincidence to the breaking point. But Jamal's traumatic
youth is his lifeline. Boyle makes magic realism part of the film's
fabric, the essential part that lets in hope without compromising
integrity.

Anthony Dod Mantle uses compact digital cameras to move with speed and
stealth through the slums and palaces of Mumbai. The film is a visual
wonder, propelled by A.R. Rahman's hip-hopping score and Chris Dickens'
kinetic editing. The whoosh of action and romance pulls you in, but it's
the bruised characters who hold you there. Every step Jamal takes toward
his final answer could get him killed. Even in the Bollywood musical
number that ends the film, joy and pain are still joined in the dance.
The no-bull honesty of Slumdog Millionaire hits you hard. It's the real
deal. No cheating.

logic goes, the audio is usually released 2 months before the film.

This is mid-Nov and i think Ghajini should be coming up by this month-end.

This is probably 1st time, that we will have not much time to savour an album
completely. In Oct, we had Yuvraaj. In Nov (hopefully), we have Ghajini. and in
Dec (hopefully), we have Dilli 6.

and to top all, we have 'Connections' too.

Friends, it will be raining Rahman this winter

Dilli 6 to release on Feb 13 2009

SRK changed the release date of the movie to February 13, 2009. Another big
budget movie, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Dilli 6 is slated for the same day
release. Dilli 6 stars Sonam Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan as its lead pair.

[arr] SdM Movie Review By David Kempler | 4 / 4

2008-11-11 Thread rahmanfever

Last but not least is the soundtrack. A R Rahman is responsible for the
music and there were a few times when I found it to be mesmerizing, yet
it never intruded. If you are lucky enough to see Slumdog Millionaire,
do not make the mistake of leaving when the credits begin to roll. Stick
around for a very special ending that will leave you grinning from ear
to ear.

Million Dollar Journey

When I first learned that I was going to watch something called Slumdog
Millionaire I was utterly clueless as to what it might be about.
Because of my penchant for trying at almost all costs to know as little
as possible about a film before seeing it, in combination with having
heard nothing about it anywhere, I was virtually a blank slate when I
walked into the screening. That I was surprised about the story is not
hard to fathom, but Slumdog Millionaire turned out to be one of the
most rewarding surprises of the film-going year. For those of you that
have trouble with subtitles, Slumdog Millionaire is almost entirely in
English so avoiding it with that excuse won't fly.

As it turns out, the term 'slumdog' is a derogatory term for people who
grow up poor in India and in this case the character's name is Jamal
Malik (Dev Patel). Jamal grows up dirt poor and is orphaned at a very
young age due to sectarian violence that claims his entire family, aside
from his brother, Salim (Madhur Mittal). The two of them endure a
lifetime of torture and misfortune before they are even teenagers but
while there is quite a bit of this shown here, including a particularly
unpleasant event within an orphanage, Slumdog Millionaire is a story
about hope, intrigue and the maintaining of an ironic sense of humor
when it would seem almost inconceivable to endure what Jamal does
without giving up.

Before Jamal and his brother are 'saved' by being taken in by an
orphanage, they are living in the streets. It is there that they
befriend Latika (Freida Pinto). The boys eventually escape the orphanage
but Latika does not make it out. What drives Jamal is the need to find
her, no matter how long it takes. He is in love. Slumdog Millionaire
jumps back and forth from the present to different times in Jamal's
past. What makes the present so interesting is that Jamal is a
contestant on the game show, Kaun Banega Crorepati, which is the Hindi
version Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. This juxtaposition of parts of
his life is very unique and an awful lot of fun to watch. Each question
that the host of the show asks Jamal provokes a memory of his that
influences his answers to the questions.

Slumdog Millionaire was scripted by Simon Beaufoy (The Full Monty) and
is based on the bestselling novel, Q and A, by Vikas Swarup. Directing
is handled by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting) and he does an outstanding
job of making it move at a near frenetic pace when appropriate but also
knowing when to let it slow down.

Patel's performance as Jamal is nothing short of sensational but to
single him out without spreading the praise all around would be a gross
injustice. The entire cast is pitch-perfect. Anthony Dod Mantle handles
cinematography and the look of Slumdog Millionaire measures up to all
of the other performances. Last but not least is the soundtrack. A R
Rahman is responsible for the music and there were a few times when I
found it to be mesmerizing, yet it never intruded. If you are lucky
enough to see Slumdog Millionaire, do not make the mistake of leaving
when the credits begin to roll. Stick around for a very special ending
that will leave you grinning from ear to ear.

18-year-old
orphan Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) is one question away from winning 20
million rupees, the top prize on India’s version of “Who Wants to be a
Millionaire?” But doubts over how he made it that far lead to his
interrogation by a police Inspector (Irrfan Khan) and flashbacks to
Jamal’s years as a child (played by Ayush Mahesh Khedekar) and
adolescent (Tanay Hemant Chheda) in the slums of Mumbai.

The buzz: Just like Jamal, it seems like this movie could hardly have better
luck. When its original distributor, Warner Independent, folded earlier
this year the future looked bleak. But indie standout Fox Searchlight
(“Juno,” “Once,” “Little Miss Sunshine”) quickly claimed the movie as
its own and planned a significant Oscar campaign following a successful
film festival run that included an audience award win at the Toronto
fest.

The verdict: Director Danny Boyle
combines the gritty surrealism of “Trainspotting,” the issues of money
and morality in “Millions,” and the free range camerawork of “28 Days
Later” for a thrilling cinematic experience from a filmmaker in peak
form. “Slumdog Millionaire” is pure movie magic—pulsing with life,
oozing authenticity and so drunk on romance that it simply has to end
with an exuberant musical number. Jamal’s journey (dubbed “bizarrely
plausible” by the Inspector) from the overcrowded slums to the flashy
TV studio, manages the miraculous trick of feeling regionally specific
but emotionally universal. That should make the movie a box office
millionaire, many times over.

Did you know? Although Boyle had never been to India before making this movie,
he had
plenty of help in getting up to speed on the culture—including cast
members primarily from Mumbai and a co-director, casting director
Loveleen Tandan, who translated for the Hindi-speaking performers.

Five out of Five stars
Running time: 120 mins

Hugely
enjoyable and bursting with energy, this is a superbly directed,
brilliantly written and beautifully acted drama that packs a powerful
emotional punch.

What's it all about?
Directed by
Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire opens with 18-year-old slum kid Jamal
Malik (Dev Patel, from Skins) being arrested on suspicion of cheating
after being one question away from winning 20 million rupees on India's
Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? After enduring some rather nasty torture
(one rather hopes ITV don't have a similar policy), he tells the police
officer (Irrfan Khan) the story of his life, where incredibly, each
episode holds the key to one of the questions he's answered.

Jamal's
story begins in the Mumbai slums, where he was orphaned, along with his
brother Salim (Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail), when their mother was
killed in a religious uprising. Later, Jamal and Salim survive by
living by their wits on the streets, until Jamal falls in love with
Latika (Rubina Ali), a young orphan girl who is destined to come
between them.

The Good
Boyle gets terrific
performances from his young cast: three actors play each of the lead
roles (Jamal, Salim and Latika) and they're all astonishing,
particularly Ayush Mahesh Khedekar, who's genuinely heartbreaking as
the youngest Jamal. There's also strong support from Irrfan Khan and
Anil Kapoor, who's brilliantly slimy as India's version of Chris
Tarrant.

Simon Beaufoy's script (adapted from a best-selling
novel by Vikas Swarup) cleverly weaves together several different
timelines and the finale brilliantly incorporates all the tension
already inherent in the Millionaire set-up.

The Great
Boyle's
direction is genuinely impressive; every scene crackles with energy and
he really captures the vibrant atmosphere of the various Indian cities.
He also orchestrates some truly astonishing sequences, from a thrilling
chase through the slums to a nail-bitingly tense sequence with some
Fagin-like gangsters and the gross-out humour of young Jamal braving a
cesspit in order to get an autograph from a Bollywood star.

Worth seeing?
Quite
simply, Slumdog Millionaire is unmissable entertainment and a strong
contender for a Best Picture nomination come Oscar time. Highly
recommended.

“Trainspotting”
director Danny Boyle’s rag-to-riches tale, tracking the trials and
tribulations of a pair of Mumbai slum-dwellers—one of whom taken in by
the gangster world while the other tries his hand at “Who Wants To Be a
Millionaire—is an epic tale both in the strict use of the term as a
story of a family’s progress and as a major undertaking worthy of film
awards. It’s a sprawling story that benefits from cinematographer
Anthony Dod Mantell’s capturing of the incessant movement sand
boundless energy in the largest city on the South Asian continent,
while taking advantage of a group of performers whose amazing yarns do
not challenge audience credibility. We receive a tension-filled account
that crosses genres of gangster movie, comedy, and romance. Charles
Dickens would be more than happy with the Danny Boyle’s superb product,
which benefits from Simon Beaufoy’s rich screenplay adapted from Vikas
Swarup’s novel “QA.”
Scripter Simon Beaufoy does take
liberties with the novel, which in Vikas Swarup’s imagination tells of
an orphaned, uneducated waiter from Mumbai who gets a chance to appear
on the TV show “Who Will Win a Billion?” but is thrown into jail for
allegedly cheating on the quiz show. Somehow that amount gets knocked
back to just twenty million rupees (a mere $401,000 US) but a sum that
would go much further in Indian than in Manhattan. The novelist’s
character Ram now becomes Jamal, who is played as a young, cautious
adult by Dev Patel and as a spirited tyke by Ayush Mahesh Khedekar.
Filmed on location in India and starring Indian-British actor Dev
Patel, “Slumdog Millionaire” has at least one scene that pays homage to
the Danny Boyle’s well-known worst toilet in Scotland. Aside from that
there is little here on the kind of vulgar level that would appeal to
teen audience members who’d refuse to see anything that doesn’t imitate
the likes of “Knocked Up,” “Role Models,” and “Superbad.” You come away
from this picture with a vivid view of the India that tourists rarely
see—a vivid, colorful, kaleidoscopic view of some of the fifty percent
of Mumbai’s nineteen million residents who live in slums the like of
which you’d not find in the poorest areas of the U.S. (The production
notes tell us that the government regularly wants to flatten the slums
to make room for livable housing, but that many of the residents,
fearing a loss of the sense of community that they enjoy now, reject
New Delhi’s pleas.)
Briefly put, the gimmick is this. Jamal
appears on the popular TV quiz and asked questions that could net him
from one thousand rupees to twenty million. Each time he answers such
queries as “Who is the third member of Dumas’ ‘The Three Musketeers’?
and “Whose face appears on the U.S. one hundred dollar bill?” the
producers of the program and especially the egotistical moderator, Prem
(Anil Kapoor) refuse to believe that an uneducated guy could possibly
know these answers. Jamal proves to us in the audience in flashbacks,
however, that there is a basis in his life’s experiences that afforded
him the correct responses. Book learning is not everything. One of the
great ironies is that Jamal’s motive for becoming a contestant has
little to do with the money he could win and a lot to do with his
romantic fantasies. This might not be entirely implausible if the young
man were rich, but we see from his experiences in Mumbai’s worst slum
that money could mean a lot more to him than a chance to buy clothes at
Neiman Marcus.
After the child Jamal and his brother Salim lose
their mother in a Hindu vs. Muslim riot, they, together with
seven-year-old Latika (Rubina Ali) join up with a Fagin-like character
who runs a school for petty criminals in a remote area. The head of the
school is greedy and vicious enough to blind one beggar, reasoning that
this will bring in double the money from him. While Latika stays on in
the institution, Salim and Jamal run away. During the years they are in
exile, Jamal gains enough life experience to answer the questions on
the show when he reaches the age of eighteen. Jamal carries a torch for
his childhood sweetheart, Latika—seen later as a beautiful young adult
(Freida Pinto). He determines to find her and take her with him into
the sunset.
The most wildly comedic parts are few but are worth
waiting for. In one scene, while scores of youngsters run to a landing
helicopter to see a noted actor, young Jamal is locked inside the
outhouse, from which he escapes by holding his nose, diving in, and
escaping through an opening in the ground. His arrival at the actor’s
side clears the crowd. In another the young brothers Salim and Jamal

possible about as much as possible (I'm not a 'know-it-all', I'm a
'want to know-it-all'), what practical purpose remains for storing
facts, dates, names, and events when the answer key to the world is
sitting at your fingertips?

Loveleen Tandan and Danny Boyle's delightful fable Slumdog Millionaire
suggests that our lives can be considered a sum of our knowledge. The
more we do, the more we experience, then the more we know. Hence, the
more we know, the richer our lives have been and can be. The film
concerns a single life, up to the age of eighteen, told against the
backdrop of an event that could transform that life forever.

The plot - Jamil Malik (Skins' Dev Patel) has lived a tough and brutal
life as an impoverished child in Mumbai, India. But now, through luck
and perhaps intent, he sits in the winner's circle of the Indian
version of 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?'. As he awaits the final
question that will award him 20 million rupees, he is arrested and
detained by Mumbai police on suspicion of cheating. Doctors, lawyers,
and scientists have never won as much money on this show, so how could
a poor kid from the slums possibly know so much? With his life
possibly hanging in the balance, Malik tells his interrogator the
story of his life up to that point, with highlighting key events that
will explain how be came to know the answers to the questions thus
far.

That's all you get, and that's all you want going in. The film is a
simple one, and the life of Malik sometimes flirts with cliche. But
the movie succeeds as a sum of its parts, and its slow-building power
becomes intoxicating. The film looks absolutely gorgeous, with
widescreen vistas of India contrasting with sharp, intrusive closeups
during interrogation scenes. The scenes set on the game show itself
are both electric and claustrophobic, with Boyle doing his best to
approximate the feeling of being on that once legendary show.

The acting is uniformly excellent, but it never stands out never
overpowers the narrative. Each of the leads is played by three
different actors as they age, and each young actor blends seamlessly
with the one following or proceeding. Of the case, only Anil Kapoor
stands out. He has fun playing the game show host, a seemingly jovial
man of shifting motives and complicated feelings about having his
spotlight stolen by this genuinely interesting young man.

And, unlike several other Danny Boyle pictures, the film actually has
a compelling third act and an emotionally involving climax. No
spoilers, but the film does not go sliding off the rails in the manner
of 28 Days Later, Sunshine, and The Beach. Granted, he was loosely
adapting Vikas Swarup's novel QA, but I was genuinely fearful that
Boyle would once again drop the third-act ball. No worries, the last
act is, if anything, superior to its somewhat dragging initial first
act set-up.

In the end, Boyle and Tandan have made an enchanting story about the
power of knowledge, knowledge gained from experiences and gained from
life itself. The film sneaks up on the audience, slowly building
emotional investment until the moviegoers are playing along with Malik
and holding their breaths at the end. It is easily one of the more
charming and original movies of this year and is absolutely perfect
family entertainment for anyone over the age of ten. It is a
celebration of not just the usual triumph of the human spirit, but a
celebration of the human experience. For it's not just what you know,
it's how you came to know it.

[arr] A 'spiritual' review of SdM

Film Review
By Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat

Slumdog Millionaire
Directed by Danny Boyle
Fox Searchlight 11/08 Feature Film
R - some violence, disturbing images, language

One
of the best films of 2008, Danny Boyle's picaresque tale centers around
an immensely resilient and loving boy from the garbage-ridden slums of
Mumbai whose adventures take him from the desolate poverty of begging
on the streets to the wildly popular game show stage of Who Wants to
be a Millionaire? where he surprises everyone with his knowledge. His
story offers a panoramic view of India's rise as a country of fantastic
contrasts from crowded cities to the stunning beauty of the Taj Mahal
to the back rooms of telemarketers to the high-rises of Mumbai where
business is thriving and creating a middle class yearning for more. The
result is a phantasmagorical journey with a boy turned young man who
throughout all his experiences maintains his natural goodness and his
Eastern belief in destiny and love.
Jamal (Ayush Mahesh Khedekar) as a seven year old is a slumdog
born in Mumbai and living with his Muslim mother and older brother,
Salim (Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail), a born hustler. They possess a lot
of energy and play amidst the mounds of garbage around the shantytown
where they live. A high point in his early life is when he manages to
get the signature of one of India's Bollywood screen stars; the means
whereby he accomplishes this feat is a sign of his creativity and
resilience. A low point in his early life is when his mother is
brutally killed when anti-Muslim rioters overrun their slum. Jamal and
Salim find themselves on the streets without any resources or hope.
They pick up another orphan named Latika (Rubina Ali) whom Jamal
immediately befriends. They see themselves as the Three Musketeers.
A dark cloud hangs over the lives of these three when they are
abducted and taken into a criminal orphanage run by a nefarious
entrepreneur who uses the kids as beggars. He encourages some of them
to become singers and then gouges out their eyes because blind kids can
bring in twice as much money as the others. When Salim discovers the
danger they face, he leads Jamal and Latika in an escape. The two boys
leap on a moving train but she doesn't make it and is recaptured.
As teenagers, Jamal (Tanay Hemant Chheda) and Salim (Ashutosh Lobo
Gajiwala) learn more tricks of the trade of street survival by becoming
tour guides at the Taj Mahal, making up their own version of the
significance of the place. They also steal the shoes of Muslims in
mosques and sell them for money. Jamal wants desperately to reconnect
with Latika (Tanvi Ganesh Lonkar), and they return to Mumbai and find
her working in a red-light district.
Jamal (Dev Patel) goes on to find employment as a chai wallah, a
boy who delivers beverages at a telemarketing firm. Salim (Madhur
Mittal) lands a profitable job working for a wealthy gangster. On a
visit to his brother, Jamal catches up with Latika (Freida Pinto) who
is a plaything for Salim's boss. His plan is to become a contestant on
India's version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? so he can always be
with Latika, his soul mate.
All the country is watching as this earnest young man answers the
questions correctly and inches his way toward the grand prize of 20
million rupees. The show's host Prem (Anil Kapoor) at first loves how
this Rags to Raja story is boosting the ratings. But he begins to
think Jamal must be cheating and has him taken to a police station
where he is interrogated by the Police Inspector (Irrfan Khan).
Danny Boyle, who impressed us immensely with the spiritual riches of Millions,
has made another extraordinary movie that takes us to places we have
never been. The cinematography of Anthony Dod Mantle is truly awesome,
and the music by A. R. Rahman distills the many moods of the
multidimensional story by screenwriter Simon Beaufoy. In his
fascinating book The Global Soul, Pico Iyer notes that we live in a world where
everywhere is made up of
everywhere else. The borders between here and there are collapsing, yet
people feel cut off from this unity thanks to the pressure of their own
high-speed and crazed lives. Danny Boyle has created a multicultural
masterwork that tears down the walls between us and Jamal, a Muslim boy
from Mumbai's slums who becomes a major celebrity because of his
appearance on television game show.
If we let him into our hearts, Jamal can teach us a thing or two
about survival. He is the kind of person who, in the words of Sara
Teasdale, makes the most of all that comes and the least of all that
goes. This astute young man is naturally curious, and he keeps track
of his experiences and what he learns at each stage of his life.
Watching the results of his awareness, we are challenged to take note
of the many teachable moments in our lives. Time and time again, Jamal
is tested and in the process he develops the strength, resilience, and
self-directedness to fix his sights and make his

[arr] Cinema Signals reviews SdM

2008-11-11 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
This isn't a musical, but the Rahman score of moods and rhythms that bring
together an eastern and western spectrum becomes a character. There's no
mistaking the importance it must have had on Boyle's inspiration in the
development of the story, and it might have come to the director's notice
when he heard what Rahman had composed for Elizabeth: The Golden Age in
2007.

Slumdog Millionaire
Director Danny Boyle's answer to Across the Universe, I call this lush and
dynamic tale that uses a boy's quest for the girl journey and an
exceptionally vibrant musical score a similarly inspired and ingenious piece
of work. Whether the connection I'm making between the two pictures is valid
or not, Boyle brings a heightened level of inventiveness and originality to
his work and to his craft. This powerhouse of drama, crime and romance is a
formula-shattering irresistible force.
The storytelling structure is more than clever as it motivates a time travel
of vignettes, traversing years in the growing up of two impoverished
slumdog brothers. So, as my first piece of trial evidence for its
originality, I ask why, at its start, it intercuts between Jamal Malik's (Dev
Patel) turn on the center podium of an Indian version of Who Wants To Be a
Millionairre game show with his being tortured in desperate circumstances in
a police station, electric shock treatment, and all.
The answer is that this is Boyle's and his screenwriter's (Simon Beaufoy)
framework. The police station scene is taking place at around the time Jamal
has already won a million rupees--enough wealth to capture the imagination of
the nation. Ratings go through the roof as Prem Kumar (Anil Kapoor), the
game master of ceremonies (and the only person who has won the game) put it
into the minds of the cops that this boy who has all the answers might just
be pulling some kind of fraud.
The suggestion, with no evidentiary basis, is enough for extreme police
measures. Once their torture has the affect of making the prisoner talk, the
inspector (impressive Irfan Khan) takes the suspected fraudster through every
one of the answers that has brought him to the point of great fortune. Each
explanation takes Jamal back to his childhood of minor crime, begging,
opportunism, kidnap and escape, to the maturation of con gaming with his
bigger brother Samil. To the rainy night when he first let Latika (Freida
Pinto) join him and his brother in the shelter of a truck, when he first
assumed an unbreakable bond with this girl.
Jamal speaks with total candor, even implicating himself in serious crime,
and dutifully shows the inspector why he was able to answer the game's
questions so well. The stories recount his utter belief in the destiny of
his and Latika's ultimate reunion, even while she's being held as chattel by
a brutal trader in whatever human victim he can turn into cash. As he finds
her and loses her over and over again, the task would seem futile to anyone
else. In fact, he chose to enter the game competition only because he knew
Latika watched it and hoped to make contact through it.
This isn't a musical, but the Rahman score of moods and rhythms that bring
together an eastern and western spectrum becomes a character. There's no
mistaking the importance it must have had on Boyle's inspiration in the
development of the story, and it might have come to the director's notice
when he heard what Rahman had composed for Elizabeth: The Golden Age in
2007.
The Indian actors are little known to American audiences save for those who
attend art houses regularly. Of them, who comprise a strong cast, including
the child and teen actors who play Latika and the brothers through time, Anil
Kapoor might be the most recognizable as the game's grand master. Patel's
calm stability is outstanding as the young man who has no guile but answer's
the cop's questions so undeviously that the older man releases him in time
for a big, complex and powerful ending that uses all the hoopla and
excitement of the game itself.
Get it now! (Click on item link) The Soundtrack

The cinematography by Anthony Dod Mantle (The Last King of Scotland) is as
adventurous and varied as the story commands, from documentary style
crowd pandemonium, to the minimalism of the Indian slum, to the grandeur and
spectacle of the game show. Through the visual palette you taste the curry
and the condiments.
And, finally, this isn't Bollywood--not anywhere close. It's the kind of
realism that's the mark of Boyle's offtimes uncompromising style, with
all the criminality and viciousness that greed and selfishness spawns. It
is, after all, out of this miasma of cruelty and idealism that the romance
takes root and fills us with a sense of masterful achievement.

It will be good to see the old group back with ARR, Naveen on Flute,

[arr] Slumdog Millionaire - a vibrantly wonderful film

2008-11-11 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Slumdog Millionaire - a vibrantly wonderful film Got to watch this incredibly
brilliant film, Slumdog Millionaire, on
thursday. I have to admit that I haven't watched Danny Boyle's
Trainspotting or 28 weeks later, both of which are critically acclaimed
and claimed to be classics. The only reason I got interested in this
movie was AR Rahman. I was totally unaware of this project at the
beginning, and then started this buzz that a film based on India got
rave reviews in London film festival. Further digging into the subject
revealed the fact that the music was composed by our own Rahman. What
more can I say, this movie got added to my list of everyday updates.

SdM
is a movie based on a novel QA by Vikas Swarup, an Indian
Diplomat. Set in India, it tells the story of Jamal, a Chai wala
working in a call center, who becomes the biggest quiz-show winner in
history, only to be sent to jail on accusations that he cheated. The
movie goes on to tell us how by drawing from the experiences of his own
short, yet turbulent and sometimes cruel life he, essentially a
slumdog, managed to answer all the twelve questions that led him to the
jackpot, and more importantly get his girl.

As this was a free
screening, the line was pretty long and most of the audience were
non-Indians. I think I just spotted one or two desis, which made me
feel special, one of the very few Indians for a movie based entirely on
India. There are many reviews giving pretty high ratings for this movie
and believe me it truly deserves it. Every scene and detail has been
handled very carefully. Even things like subtitles (as there are
initial scenes of children completely in hindi) was done so playfully
and colorfully. You won't find them at their usual place with white
colored fonts, instead they go around the big screen in a way that you
concentrate on the scene as well as the words. Master stroke !! Also I
loved the way the music blended with the movie. It was a big
opportunity for Rahman to showcase his talent and he has pulled it off
brilliantly. The background score was amazing. There were times when I
didn't know if it was Danny Boyle's direction or Rahman's music which
made the scene either so romantic or so intense. I think it was a
perfect marriage. There are two songs featured in the movie which give
a breath of fresh air amidst moments of heartbreak, tragedy and drama,
MIA Paper planes song which comes at an important juncture of the film
and the grand Bollywood song-and-dance number which comes right at the
end. Danny Boyle makes sure that everyone leaving the theater leave in
their best spirits and with a wide smile of their faces.

Another
highlight of this movie is its memory narrated structure. It keeps
going back and forth from the game show to the jail to Jamal's past
experiences, all of them culminating at a pulsating finale. Acting also
needs a special mention, as everyone right from the young children did
a fantastic job. For about an hour or so the two young kids carry the
entire movie in their shoulders which was incredible. Their scenes
actually were the most impressive for me and touching. And then there
were veterans Irfan Khan and Anil Kapoor who did their part with great
panache. Latika(Freida Pinto) was simply beautiful and Jamal(Dev Patel)
was extremely believable and so relatable. I'm sure we'll see more of
this young lad in the coming years.

SdM is a journey through
that part of India which is seldom seen or heard these days. It boldly
showcases that section of people who are at the most neglected both by
the huge Indian media and the government. I'm sure no Indian film maker
would have dared to touch such a subject thinking about money prospects
and for that I thank Danny Boyle for presenting this movie in such a
delightful fashion. I hope he gets the gold, if u know what I mean. The
underlining motto of this movie is Destiny. Whatever happens, happens
for a reason and it is written to happen that way. Something which I
personally believe in. Do you believe in that ???

SdM opens in select theaters on November 12th. Let the journey begin

Musical Talents

South cinema is home to some of the biggest musical talents of the
nation. With composers who are never afraid to try something new, it
almost seems that this is an industry full of A R Rahmans. Of course,
his brilliance is incomparable. However, let's just say that down South
A R Rahman has much more competition than he may seem to have up North.
Harris Jayraj, Illaraya, Mani Sharma, Devi Sri Prasad and M M Keeravani
are some of the top composers and are constantly seen to be trying
something new, music being quite an integral part of its culture just as
dance sequences are.

Even the best of our playback singers are constantly taking trips down
South to deliver some chartbusters there as well. Shaan, Kay Kay,
Sunidhi Chauhan, Shreya Ghosal and Kunal Ganjawala, who are the popular
names in the Hindi music industry today, all have extensively sung down
south with Shankar Mahadevan making his presence felt more than other!
In addition, Vishal and Shekhar are heard to be making a debut down
South soon as are Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy.

   But
it doesn't matter. The surprisingly mesmerizing story focuses on a
 poor

on an Indian TV quiz show that's at once lurid, garish, and exciting.
It's a combination of Bollywood meeting Hollywood.
The motivation for Jamal to take on this show's challenge? His
 love for
Latika, a friend who is a big fan of the series.
Director Danny Boyles is fanatic at depitcing the paradoxes of

As Jamal succeeds on the show, he's faced with charges of fraud

must explain to the police how he came to acquire knowledge that is
generally unavailable to someone of his class and educational level.
Each answer relates to an aspect of Jamal's life and that of his
older brother Salim and Latika, the girl he has loved since he was

Even the camera work is well done, as viewers are often taken

when he heard what Rahman had composed for Elizabeth: The Golden Age in
 2007.

 Slumdog Millionaire
Director Danny Boyle's answer to Across the Universe, I call this lush
 and
dynamic tale that uses a boy's quest for the girl journey and an
exceptionally vibrant musical score a similarly inspired and ingenious
 piece
of work. Whether the connection I'm making between the two pictures is
 valid
or not, Boyle brings a heightened level of inventiveness and originality to

his work and to his craft. This powerhouse of drama, crime and romance is a

 formula-shattering irresistible force.
The storytelling structure is more than clever as it motivates a time
 travel
of vignettes, traversing years in the growing up of two impoverished
slumdog brothers. So, as my first piece of trial evidence for its
originality, I ask why, at its start, it intercuts between Jamal Malik's
 (Dev
Patel) turn on the center podium of an Indian version of Who Wants To Be a

Millionairre game show with his being tortured in desperate circumstances
 in
a police station, electric shock treatment, and all.
The answer is that this is Boyle's and his screenwriter's (Simon Beaufoy)
framework. The police station scene is taking place at around the time
 Jamal
has already won a million rupees--enough wealth to capture the imagination
 of
the nation. Ratings go through the roof as Prem Kumar (Anil Kapoor), the
game master of ceremonies (and the only person who has won the game) put it

into the minds of the cops that this boy who has all the answers might just

be pulling some kind of fraud.
The suggestion, with no evidentiary basis, is enough for extreme police
measures. Once their torture has the affect of making the prisoner talk,
 the
inspector (impressive Irfan Khan) takes the suspected fraudster through
 every
one of the answers that has brought him to the point of great fortune. Each

explanation takes Jamal back to his childhood of minor crime, begging,
opportunism, kidnap and escape, to the maturation of con gaming with his
bigger brother Samil.
The stories recount his utter belief in the destiny of
his and Latika's ultimate reunion, even while she's being held as chattel
 by
a brutal trader in whatever human victim he can turn into cash. As he finds

her and loses her over and over again, the task would seem futile to anyone

Of them, who comprise a strong cast, including

the child and teen actors who play Latika and the brothers through time,
 Anil
Kapoor might be the most recognizable as the game's grand master. Patel's
calm stability is outstanding as the young man who has no guile but
 answer's
the cop's questions so undeviously that the older man releases him in time
for a big, complex and powerful ending that uses all the hoopla and
 excitement of the game itself.
Get it now! (Click on item link) The Soundtrack

The cinematography by Anthony Dod Mantle (The Last King of Scotland) is
 as
adventurous and varied as the story commands, from documentary style
crowd pandemonium, to the minimalism of the Indian slum, to the grandeur
 and
spectacle of the game show.

Trivial Pursuit: Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire

by Eric Hynes (November 11, 2008)
[An indieWIRE review from Reverse Shot.]
A noisy, sub-Dickens update on the romantic tramp's tale, Slumdog Millionaire
zips around a boy's hard-luck life with a strange verve. Ragtag
children run through a labyrinthine Indian shantytown with a police
officer in hot pursuit. Two boys ride atop a moving train, hanging
upside down over the side to steal food from a wealthy family. The same
boys arrive at the Taj Mahal and give bogus tours to German tourists.
Later they guide an American couple around a scenic village by foot
while locals strip their fancy car for parts. The kids are cute, shots
are stylishly skewed, cuts are whip-quick, and rousing remixes of M.I.A.'s
ubiquitous Paper Planes pop-pop and ching-ching throughout. Poverty can be so
much fun.

The over-reliance on M.I.A. nods to where Slumdog Millionaire is coming from.
British director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later) and British
screenwriter Simon Beaufoy (The Full Monty)
approach their indigenous Indian locales and characters as though
components of some pop diaspora, equating wild flower with root. Boyle
careens through the hustle and bustle, employing tired visceral
techniques -- jumpy handheld, tilted frames, extreme close-ups -- and a
LOUD-quiet-LOUD soundscape. But there's a drive to the filmmaking, a
harping insistence that something fresh is happening here (or over
there) despite the musty narrative. There are surface seductions, such
as an emergent cityscape reflected by the tinted shells of designer
sunglasses, or a sly, pulse-pounding sequence improbably motivated by
the banal mechanics of telemarketing, but the film stalls on style.
Like a deep-pocketed club owner or talent manager, Boyle sells Mumbai
-- or the hip Anglo vision of it -- as the new hotness. And pace the
title, he's slumming his way to millions.
Structured, in all seriousness, around questions posed on the Indian
version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? the film thwacks to life
when police interrogators rough up eighteen-year-old Jamal (Dev Patel)
for allegedly cheating his way to millions on the popular game show.
What the hell can a slumdog possibly know? they ask rhetorically,
alluding to Jamal's orphaned, uneducated past. Jamal wakes from a
battered slumber to rejoinder: The answers. I knew the answers. Roll
opening credits as Boyle flashbacks to Jamal and other dirty-soled boys
sifting through trash. How DID Jamal know the answers? Not through
study, or curiosity or innate brilliance. Our universal hero learned
the harder way -- from the school of hard knocks, natch.
With the interrogators prodding him to prove his honesty, he
flashbacks to colorful and tragic episodes of his life, each birthing a
nugget of unconscious trivial knowledge. He knows about guns because
he's had them pointed at him; he knows about a Bollywood star because
his brother traded away his prized autographed picture; he knows about
cricket because -- bear with me here -- when he finally rediscovered
the love of his life in a gangster's lair, that's what said gangster
was watching on his flat-screen TV. Another question provokes a
flashback to his mom's murder by marauding Hindus (religious and racial
conflict is borrowed for plot but never explored), prompting him to
tell the police inquisitors, I wish I didn't know that answer. Oh,
for a spotless mind.
A goofy picaresque to rival Forrest Gump, Slumdog
Millionaire has a similar power to please, shell-gaming the audience
into emotionally investing in and celebrating its protagonist's dumb
romanticism. Forrest's behavior was an expression of low IQ, but
Jamal's stolen childhood doesn't really explain his simplicity -- it's
just the only facet he's given. Both Forrest and Jamal pine for the
model-pretty playmates of their youths, their first love strong enough
to sustain them through life's indignities. Boyle condescends to
inserting a shot of Latika (Freida Pinto) whenever Jamal is at
his lowest, a guiding light for us all to follow. Also orphaned as a
young girl, Latika gets captured by a seemingly beneficent
child-slave-herder, pimped out as a virginal belly-dancer, raped by
Jamal's teenaged brother Salim (Madhur Mittal), and possessed by
the gangster, but Jamal keeps aspiring to save her, undaunted by the
plot's tedious insistence on keeping her literally captive. He wants
nothing else; he's got nothing else. Knowing that she watches Who
Wants to Be a Millionaire as an escape from her hellish life, he goes
on the show to communicate with her. Yes, he phones a friend.
In championing Forrest Gump's purity, Robert Zemeckis's film
mocked both U.S. history and the complexities of adulthood, helping to
fan the flames of American anti-intellectualism to a towering
mid-Nineties blaze. Boyle's ode to dumb love and circumstance hasn't
the same deliberation, but Slumdog Millionaire does manage to make
bombastic offense. Jamal's success on the TV show

'Slumdog Millionaire'
Rating: (3 STARS)

Trivia
can be a great socio-economic equalizer, putting the well-educated on
the same footing as the self-taught. Ken Jennings, the long-reigning
Jeopardy! champion, didn't go to Harvard but to Brigham Young University, and
those guys who keep winning the quiz-nite kitty at your
local pub probably aren't a bunch of summa cum laudes, either.

Attitudes are slightly different in caste-conscious India, at least according
to Slumdog Millionaire,
in which a teenage orphan from Mumbai raises suspicions by nailing
every answer on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. The film opens with
Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) being beaten and electric-shocked by two cops
who demand to know: How did a lowborn urchin learn so much about
history, poetry and foreign currency?

The answer plays out in flashbacks, question by question, in this entertaining
and ingenious yarn from director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting) and screenwriter
Simon Beaufoy (The Full Monty),
based on the novel Q A by Indian diplomat Vikas Swarup. It's
the story of one boy's colorful, sometimes violent education in the
filthy streets of the former Bombay, known for good reason as maximum
city. Each narrow escape sears a certain factoid into Jamal's brain -
the maker of the pistol pointing at his face, for instance - that later
comes in handy.

The film's first half is its most memorable, in which Jamal and his
older brother, Salim (Madhur Mittal), played by younger actors, survive
various horrors and develop opposing personalities: Salim turns cold
and unscrupulous, while Jamal dreams of finding his long-lost
sweetheart, Latika (Frieda Pinto). The plot wobbles slightly with the
introduction of some generic gangsters and the Millionaire host (Anil
Kapoor), whose motives are never quite clear, but it's impossible not
to root for Jamal as he nears his ultimate goal. He's an appealing
underdog who represents an ideal of equality as well as a fantasy of
success.

Bursting
with energy, color and a bracing humanism, Danny Boyle's Slumdog
Millionaire is an underdog story that you can feel plenty good about
liking.
Boyle and screenwriter Simon Beaufoy (The Full Monty)
deftly combine Dickens and Bollywood, kinetic camerawork and a seamless
story that celebrates the vagaries of fate. Slumdog has earned
ovations at film festivals and, even for the hardest cynic, it's
guaranteed to raise at least a smile.
Boyle, adding another entry
to an already impressively eclectic resume (Trainspotting, 28 Days
Later, Sunshine, Shallow Grave), establishes his rock-'em,
sock-'em aesthetic from the outset, juxtaposing images of teenage Jamal
(Dev Patel) walking onto the shiny set of India's Who Wants to Be a
Millionaire? with shots of him being brutally interrogated by local
police.
What happened? Jamal, an uneducated street kid, is but
one question away from winning the show's grand prize of 20 million
rupees. His success seems so preposterous — how could he possibly know
whose face is on an American $100 bill? — that authorities suspect he
is cheating.
But as we come to learn through an interrogation
with a police detective (Irfan Khan), Jamal has earned his trivial
knowledge the hard way. Via flashbacks, we see the young Jamal and his
tough brother Salim growing up on the streets of Mumbai, eking out a
living through the virtue of their wits, and meeting a beautiful young
orphan,

Latika, who will become the love of cockeyed optimist Jamal's life.
Slumdog
achieves a startling power as it moves between Jamal sitting on
Millionaire's shiny altar of consumerism and the abject poverty of
Mumbai. Boyle has never been a sentimentalist, and he captures the
vibrant energy and soulful spirit of the film's squalid setting without
sugarcoating its disturbing dangers.
Any movie that contains
hate-induced riots, orphans being brutally blinded, pimps, prostitutes
and a kid diving into a pond of poop so he can obtain his favorite
star's autograph can't really be accused of pandering, can it?
If
anything, the film's idea that firsthand knowledge trumps book learning
seems positively perverse in an age where people have the means to live
at a complete remove from the world. Slumdog is a fairy tale writ
large, for sure, but there's truth and beauty to the movie's central
notion that the meek will inherit the earth, even if they have to go
through hell before claiming the prize.

the way to be ARR's die hard fan. I dont think ARR would approve of

Guzarish as we hear it today is really a teaser - a piece meal. Make

There is more coming our way. We are a few days away from another

More than one interview i had seen ARR making good comments on HJ!!

even he is not so deserved!!! .

thats the simplicity and greatness of ARR!

some time he also praises Yuvan and other MDs also...

all those comments happened whenever the interviewer asked about those
persons...

so plz dont blindly accusing the GREAT..one and only ARR

You never heard ARR commenting good words on HJ is ur mistake
... that doesnt means ARR never make good comments on
HJ...

again I liked to say... even if he doesnt deserved
it

[arr] Re: Slumdog Millionaire - a vibrantly wonderful film

2008-11-11 Thread Chord
Thanks Gopal for all these amazing reviews of Slumdog. You've been
on the ball with posting all these reviews and I can tell that you
too are very excited and eager to see this movie. Frankly, I can't
remember a movie getting this amount of praise and appreciation! So
awesome that ARR is associated with this film. Hope he gets an Oscar
for the music.

Wow, what a treat.GhajiniSlumdogConnections.man, what
a year this has been!

Slumdog Millionaire - a vibrantly wonderful film Got to watch this
incredibly brilliant film, Slumdog Millionaire, on
thursday. I have to admit that I haven't watched Danny Boyle's
Trainspotting or 28 weeks later, both of which are critically
acclaimed
and claimed to be classics. The only reason I got interested in this
movie was AR Rahman. I was totally unaware of this project at the
beginning, and then started this buzz that a film based on India got
rave reviews in London film festival. Further digging into the
subject
revealed the fact that the music was composed by our own Rahman.
What
more can I say, this movie got added to my list of everyday
updates.

 SdM
is a movie based on a novel QA by Vikas Swarup, an Indian
Diplomat. Set in India, it tells the story of Jamal, a Chai wala
working in a call center, who becomes the biggest quiz-show winner
in
history, only to be sent to jail on accusations that he cheated. The
movie goes on to tell us how by drawing from the experiences of his
own
short, yet turbulent and sometimes cruel life he, essentially a
slumdog, managed to answer all the twelve questions that led him to
the
jackpot, and more importantly get his girl.

 As this was a free
screening, the line was pretty long and most of the audience were
non-Indians. I think I just spotted one or two desis, which made me
feel special, one of the very few Indians for a movie based
entirely on
India. There are many reviews giving pretty high ratings for this
movie
and believe me it truly deserves it. Every scene and detail has been
handled very carefully. Even things like subtitles (as there are
initial scenes of children completely in hindi) was done so
playfully
and colorfully. You won't find them at their usual place with white
colored fonts, instead they go around the big screen in a way that
you
concentrate on the scene as well as the words. Master stroke !!
Also I
loved the way the music blended with the movie. It was a big
opportunity for Rahman to showcase his talent and he has pulled it
off
brilliantly. The background score was amazing. There were times
when I
didn't know if it was Danny Boyle's direction or Rahman's music
which
made the scene either so romantic or so intense. I think it was a
perfect marriage. There are two songs featured in the movie which
give
a breath of fresh air amidst moments of heartbreak, tragedy and
drama,
MIA Paper planes song which comes at an important juncture of the
film
and the grand Bollywood song-and-dance number which comes right at
the
end. Danny Boyle makes sure that everyone leaving the theater leave
in
their best spirits and with a wide smile of their faces.

 Another
highlight of this movie is its memory narrated structure. It keeps
going back and forth from the game show to the jail to Jamal's past
experiences, all of them culminating at a pulsating finale. Acting
also
needs a special mention, as everyone right from the young children
did
a fantastic job. For about an hour or so the two young kids carry
the
entire movie in their shoulders which was incredible. Their scenes
actually were the most impressive for me and touching. And then
there
were veterans Irfan Khan and Anil Kapoor who did their part with
great
panache. Latika(Freida Pinto) was simply beautiful and Jamal(Dev
Patel)
was extremely believable and so relatable. I'm sure we'll see more
of
this young lad in the coming years.

 SdM is a journey through
that part of India which is seldom seen or heard these days. It
boldly
showcases that section of people who are at the most neglected both
by
the huge Indian media and the government. I'm sure no Indian film
maker
would have dared to touch such a subject thinking about money
prospects
and for that I thank Danny Boyle for presenting this movie in such a
delightful fashion. I hope he gets the gold, if u know what I mean.
The
underlining motto of this movie is Destiny. Whatever happens,
happens
for a reason and it is written to happen that way. Something which I
personally believe in. Do you believe in that ???

SdM opens in select theaters on November 12th. Let the journey begin

 Guys,

I anticipated this comparison between Hindi and Tamil Ghajini. I
understand that we are diehard fans of ARR, but HJ bashing is not
the way to be ARR's die hard fan. I dont think ARR would approve of
 it.

Guzarish as we hear it today is really a teaser - a piece meal.
Make
your judgement after you are exposed to the full course 5-set meal.

There is more coming our way. We are a few days away from another
jewel in ARR's crown. Once the full track of Guzarish and all the
other songs is available, there is going to be more comparisons.
ARR
is a genius, even if you make one-on-one comparisons, it is unfair
to compare apples and oranges. You have to look at the entire
 package.

If you really want to be productive and make ARR proud of this
group, lets engage in conversation about music, ARR's creations,
about other good music that you have been listening to. Lets use
this to enrich one another about music.

 Cheers,

 - Vijay

the Tamil Version of it.. It was really unfair not to give him the
chance in Hindi too.. It was too much pressure on Rahman to bring
something above the songs that Harris(He used to assist Rahman before)
