[arr] Danny Boyle-A.R.Rahman in Bonds next?
A scintillating buzz across the globe is about a source revealing that Danny Boyle has been asked to direct James Bond's 23rd Film. It's a high-season for British Filmmaker Danny Boyle who stunned the world with his impeccable story of the `Slumdog Millionaire'. In fact, the filmmaker was a bit distressed as there were no takers for this film as they felt it wouldn't do good business at the box office. Nevertheless, the mantra of `Rags to Riches' has become a hit yet again with Danny's able direction, as the film fetched the international awards the crew never even dreamt about. Post-Oscar triumph, the director has been flooded with offers left right and centre from top production houses one of which is with Barbara Broccoli, producer of James Bond's 23rd Film. Talks suggest that it was co-producer Callum McDougal who suggested Danny as both of them have shared a good rapport for a very long time. As a matter of fact, Callum who produced Danny's `Beach' was fascinated by his working style. Says one of the sources, `Danny's intense involvement with the motifs he drops on his script papers is unbeatable by any of the contemporary filmmakers. For sure, he would offer a new-dimensioned James Bond and it's something about turning spotlights of entire globe if Danny is there in Bonds' family'. And not only does the story end there, if Boyle signs up for this flick, undoubtedly don't we all know who the music director for the film would be? Uh-huh! None other than the `Mozart of Chennai' our very own A.R. Rahman, as both have already planned to work on another international project that's expected to be based on the organized crime in Mumbai. Hold your breath until the official announcements are made. And just imagine Rahman re-tuning James Bond's signature music that's a universal theme. Just can't wait to hear more right. So are we! http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/tamil/article/45407.html http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/tamil/article/45407.html

Now, Tamil film industry’s filmmakers, producers and every technician have planned out for a gala celebration of honoring Rahman. It has been stated that the grand occasion held at Nehru Stadium on March 28 will have not just Tamil film personalities, but whole lot of Bollywood and other more celebrities are expected. Former President APJ Abdul Kalam would be gracing over the occasion as the chief guest… As it’s time on for the Lok Sabha Elections, film unit members are sure about not inviting any politicians as the dais may accidentally turn into a podium of indirect propaganda.

Dear All; I was just reading HT cafe mumbai edition march 5 2009.. An interview of Pankaj Udhas is published on page 9 :thats music: Udhas ji has mentioned the following lines A.R.Rahman can hold two oscars ,but slumdogs share are hardly encouraging. And Ht has highlighted those two lines... Reading it i got such a pinch in my stomach that i didnt want to read the interview.. Normally I always like reading interviews of leading musicians.. One thing I fail to understand why do people start criticising if someone has achieved something which they could not inspite of being in the same profession.. Few days ago same was the case with Jagjit singh.. With due respect to both ( Jagjit singh and Pankaj Udhas),I felt really sad that veterans like them commenting such things..Rahman is god and nobody could malign his image.. I would like to point out by doing such things people like the ones I have mentioned (jagjit singh and Pankaj Udhas) are doing no good for there image.. Also Rahman doesnot need to prove anything by sell of albums.. With huge amount of downloading going on its impractical to think that sales will increase..But then as an a r fan .. its my responsibility not 2 react to such silly issues.. cos this may lead to showing disrespect for my god..Sachin tendulkar always silences his critics by scoring a timely ton now and again..Never will he speak anything to the media And same is the case with A R.. Long live AR and long live his music...

[arr] Stop Comparing me with my Guru’- A.R. Rahman
Comparisons are merely present only in India, especially in Bollywood and Kollywood where you don’t get to see even a single media channel ending it’s day without pulling one’s legs by raising one’s name above them…. Now it has turned to be a hot topic in South India, especially the Tamil Film Industry where many have been debating the issue of who’s greater between ‘Ilayaraja’ and his protégé ‘A.R. Rahman’. None are least or greater than anyone. If you ask us, it would be the apt reply. Perhaps, we’re sure there isn’t any big reason other than this. A.R. Rahman was bit distressed addressing the throngs gathered for his felicitation on Sunday Evening where his mentor Ilayaraja and M.S. Viswanathan were present. Speaking on the occasion, he said, ‘I was bit disappointed watching media channels especially certain websites that were continually passing abusive comments by comparing Ilayaraja sir with him. He’s the great master of all times and I’m nothing when compared to him… Elder Musicians like him laid the foundation and I’ve represented them for these awards’. As the standing applause that was witnessed for around 10mins when Ilayaraja spoke was the highlighting factor and Rahman on this said, ‘This is something more prestigious and that’s the result of Ilayaraja and Oscars is no where compared to this’. Well, Ilayaraja and Rahman had graduated from the same school of Trinity Music College of London and there were some more similarities between them as their masters of Classical music were ‘Dhanraj’ Master. When Ilayaraja happens to be special with his orchestration structure A.R. Rahman mastered the best of all sound engineering. So, it’s precisely evident that both of them have been trendsetters of various periods… http://www.kollywoodtoday.com/news/stop-comparing-me-with-my-guru-ar-rahman/ -- regards, Vithur

The friendship between Dhanu A.R.Rahman is something very true. Its without falsehood. If Dhanu says something, people in the Cine Industry say, its like a prophecy. It happens thus!. There can be many examples to quote the same. It was he who gave the title to Rajnikanth as “ Super Star”. Dhanu had predicted and prophesised the Awards of A.R.Rahman. In January, it was the Golden Globe Awards and in February, it has been the Oscar awards. On November 27, on the 100th day of Sakkarakatti, Dhanu had given the advertisement that Rahman has won these awards. In the Advertisement it was stated as “ For tomorrow’s Oscar awards, and for today’s Golden Globe Award winning A.R.Rahman, we are greeting him, and let his musical journey continue”. Dhanu was very sure that Rahman would be winning all these awards in the very future. On the day before the Oscars Ceremony, Dhanu had told to one of the intimate friends of Rahman that he would win two awards for sure. After winning the awards, Rahman had called upon Dhanu and reiterated his prophecy of he winning the Awards. Both their friendship is like Adhiyaman – Avvaiyar friendship ( Both are big time friends of age old times. Both are Tamil Scholars ) Walt Disney has had talks with Rahman for tying up for a movie. They had requested Rahman to let them know of any producer in Chennai, who could be laid faith on, and Rahman immediately showed hands of that of Dhanu. Walt Disney believe in Rahman and Rahman believes in Kalaipuli Dhanu. ( Latest Issue of “ Devi” Magazine – Tamil weekly ) -- regards, Vithur -- Sent from my very old 386 machine. [arr] Jai Ho is America's new fitness anthem
http://www.rediff.com/movies/2009/mar/05jai-ho-americas-new-fitness-anthem.htm Jai Ho is America's new fitness anthem Ayoti Mittra in New York March 05, 2009 15:11 IST Apparently, there's nothing Slumdog Millionaire [Images] cannot do. It can outperform heavyweight films at the box office, win eight Oscars [Images] out of nine nominations -- and even help Americans lose weight! Dancing to the tunes of Slumdog Millionaire has become a craze at many fitness and dance schools -- as for example Kumud Mathur's Dance 2 Health in Potomac, Maryland, where students meet every Tuesday to dance to Jai Ho and O Saya. Now that the song has an Oscar to its name, says student Jennifer Fry, more people are going to join in. Fry's interest in Bollywood was first sparked by the Aishwarya [Images] Rai-starrer Bride and Prejudice [Images]. Dancing to Slumdog tunes makes for a fun and positive experience, she says, and is definitely a mood-lifter. It's a great way to exercise too. I also loved the movie. It was very provocative, but had a positive ending. At Dance 2 Health, Mathur spends the first half of her class choreographing and teaching her students bhangra steps that are later applied to the songs of Slumdog. The songs have good meaning and are vibrant. I also require students to be happy and smile, says Mathur. Her class consists of people from different ethnicities like Afghanis, Asians and African Americans. Veer Sain, another of her students, says he has been working out for 20 years but nothing is as fun as dancing to Bollywood music, especially the Slumdog soundtrack. The songs are nice. You learn how to dance, and lose weight at the same time. The movie itself, Sain says, portrays the true picture of India. It is about time we faced the reality about the country, says Sain, who along with his wife had joined Mathur's class this January. The craze is not confined to just Dance 2 Health. As Bollywood becomes more popular in the US, more people are turning to Bollywood dancing as a form of exercise. Renu Kansal started Bollywood West, a dance school in Denver, three years ago after moving out of New York City. Initially, she was sceptical about the project, as the population of Indians in Denver is less compared to the New York-New Jersey-Connecticut Tristate region or the San Francisco Bay Area. But Kansal was pleasantly surprised when she had to double the number of classes, as hundreds of students expressed interest in lessons. Even more surprising was the ethnicity of the students that enrolled for bhangra and Bollywood lessons -- I would say 60 per cent, maybe even 65 per cent of the students are non-desis. Bollywood has become popular now, it is getting more exposure. The age group ranges from 16-65. Each season, Kansal prepares different songs for her students to work out to, and in the season beginning in a few weeks, the Slumdog score is slated to dominate the course material. Like Mathur, Kansal too expects enrolments to go up now that the movie has won eight Oscars.

But not everyone's humming a happy tune not least of all the lyrical genius who penned the catchy Jai Ho lyrics. Sukhwinder Singh who has sung the song is of a slightly different opinion, he says, As long as this song is used to bring happiness, I don't have any objection to it. My work was to sing the song. The music company is totally free to sell the rights whosoever they want. [arr] Felicitations Galore for ARR
Well, if Cliff Richards was alive now, he would've gone irresistible picking up his guitar and rendering his best spell of ‘Congratulations and Jubilations’. Yup! It’s an unending downpour of appreciations our Madras Mozart is surmounted with. Recently, A.R. Rahman was honored by his beloved mentors and versatile musicians for accomplishing his feat of global recognition. Now, the Tamil film industry’s filmmakers, producers inclusive of each and every technician have planned out for a gala celebration of honoring Rahman. It has been stated that the grand occasion will be witnessed at Nehru Stadium on March 28. The function will not only see just Tamil film personalities, but a whole lot of known faces from Bollywood and beyond. The former President APJ Abdul Kalam will be gracing the occasion as the chief guest. As the time is for the Lok Sabha Elections is closing in, the film unit members are sure on not inviting any politicians as the dais may accidentally turn into a podium of indirect propaganda. A very appropriate decision indeed! http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/tamil/article/45408.html
[arr] ARR - Danny Boyle in next Bond film?
A scintillating buzz across the globe is about a source revealing that Danny Boyle has been asked to direct James Bond’s 23rd Film. It’s a high-season for British Filmmaker Danny Boyle who stunned the world with his impeccable story of the ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. In fact, the filmmaker was a bit distressed as there were no takers for this film as they felt it wouldn’t do good business at the box office. Nevertheless, the mantra of ‘Rags to Riches’ has become a hit yet again with Danny’s able direction, as the film fetched the international awards the crew never even dreamt about. Post-Oscar triumph, the director has been flooded with offers left right and centre from top production houses one of which is with Barbara Broccoli, producer of James Bond’s 23rd Film. Talks suggest that it was co-producer Callum McDougal who suggested Danny as both of them have shared a good rapport for a very long time. As a matter of fact, Callum who produced Danny’s ‘Beach’ was fascinated by his working style. Says one of the sources, ‘Danny’s intense involvement with the motifs he drops on his script papers is unbeatable by any of the contemporary filmmakers. For sure, he would offer a new-dimensioned James Bond and it’s something about turning spotlights of entire globe if Danny is there in Bonds’ family’. And not only does the story end there, if Boyle signs up for this flick, undoubtedly don’t we all know who the music director for the film would be? Uh-huh! None other than the ‘Mozart of Chennai’ our very own A.R. Rahman, as both have already planned to work on another international project that’s expected to be based on the organized crime in Mumbai. Hold your breath until the official announcements are made. And just imagine Rahman re-tuning James Bond’s signature music that’s a universal theme. Just can’t wait to hear more right. So are we! http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/tamil/article/45407.html

A host of artistes, including Kamal Hassan and Suriya, congratulated Rahman for winning two Oscar awards, the first Indian to achieve the historic feat and said that the ‘Mozart of Madras’ has made the entire nation proud. 43-year-old Rahman bagged Oscars for Original Score in the Slumdog Millionaire, named the best at the 81st Academy Awards, and also won the Best Song award for the foot-tapping number Jai ho in the film. Kamal Hassan, who has worked with Rahman in many ventures said that he was proud of the maestro as an Indian and was looking forward to meet him. “I am looking forward to meet Rahman, with whom I have to discuss the new film we are currently working on,” the veteran actor said. Recalling his more than 10-year-long relationship with Rahman, Kamal Hassan said that the music composer was a hard worker who never looks at the clock while working. “The only difference between me and Rahman is that I work in the day and he works even during night. He has sacrificed his sleep often to complete his work,” he told television channels. After the remarkable success of Roja, there was no looking back for Rahman, who his close friends in the industry call a humble personality. “From the very early days when we both worked for advertisements to this day, one thing has not changed with Rahman. That is his humility,” noted cinematographer Rajiv Menon said. What made Rahman’s music click with the listeners was the refreshing use of percussions, sound and melody, most of which were inspired from Indian folk music. Rahman, who is fondly called as Isai Puyal in Tamil, has rendered music for over 150 films in Tamil and he always respected his mother- tongue, which came to the fore on February 23 when he said Ella pughalum iraivanuke after receiving the Oscars. Another close friend of Rahman, noted Tamil lyricist Vairamuthu attributed the music composer’s Oscar win to his sincerity and dedication towards work and humbleness. “He is a very humble man. He is simply simple and down-to-earth. I am proud of Rahman, especially as a person who wrote lyrics for 90 per cent of his songs,” he said. Rahman, who is rarely seen at public functions, devotes most of his spare time to his large family consisting of mother, wife, three children and four sisters. _PTI http://www.screenindia.com/news/tamil-film-industry-hails-rahmans-doubledelight-at-oscars/430290/ -- regards, Vithur

And after almost five decades of also writing stories, screenplays, dialogues and poems and directing films, his career comes full circle when the Oscar statuette unexpectedly came knocking for another song. How does it feel? Gulzar frames candid answers* *A cliched query that you must be answering a zillion times a day - but it has to be asked: How does it feel to be an Oscar awardee?* Well, I don’t mind because the question is very natural under the circumstances! (Smiles) It feels very nice. It is like a topping of a nice big cherry on your career. I do not know whether this is a plateau or a peak, or how I will fare in the coming years and whether I will maintain my success or not, so it’s lovely to live the feeling, especially since it is for the first thing I did in Hindi films ever - write a song! (see Box) *Are the press reports true - that you did not go to the ceremony because there were procedural glitches in your travel plans?* Well, the real reason was my shoulder - I injured it while swinging my arm during tennis and I am still under treatment. I have just returned from a session with my physiotherapist (the interview happened three days after the Academy Awards). It was terribly painful, and though I may have managed with medicines I thought that if I go there I should be in top health. Yes, I am terribly sorry and am upset especially for my daughter Meghna and son-in-law Govind who were really looking forward to being there that evening. Rahman himself is pretty upset - he complained, “I am left alone!” so let me say “Sorry” to him through the columns of Screen! And I agree that the best thing about this award is that it is for a song composed by him. I would even say that this award was possible only because of Rahman. *We would like to know how Jai ho was conceived and created.* We made Jai ho like any other song, in the way Rahman works every time. He usually offers one or two compositions for each situation, with ideas and suggstions thrown across on the angles of the situation. It was a song of victory after a struggle - the struggle of romance and love. So as usual, I wrote the words and phrases starting with the obvious phase Jai ho. Then Sukhwinder Singh, who was present, sang the line I wrote and it was he and his exquisite voice that actually created the magic. Rahman and I have won the Oscar but Sukhwinder truly deserves mention for the song as it has finally turned out. *Despite being for a foreign film, did you imagine the song reaching this far?* How could I? (Smiles) Rahman never told me that it was for a non-Indian film. When I asked him, he was very vague and that did make me very suspicious. But that’s something I think about when I look back. Because we made it in the same normal way in which we have been working all these years. Only this time the director wasn’t around. *Rahman isn’t conversant with much Hindi and Urdu. So could you describe this way of working?* Rahman’s compositions are a challenge - because he is innovative and unconventional. His music talks to you and work becomes easy. In the past too, I have written my songs after fixing key phrases first, like Chal chhaiyya chhaiyya (Dil Se...) and O humdum suniyo re (Saathiya). Besides inspiring me with his composition, Rahman is such a good soul that I never feel that I am at work. The atmosphere is very conducive to creativity with ideas being bounced across. There is so much give-and-take and actual exchanges of thoughts and images. And Rahman is making a lot of effort at his Hindi now and is improving - like he sent me this message after getting his awards that said, “Shukriya, huzoor!” *Do you recollect your first meeting with Rahman?* It’s been 11 years since Dil Se...happened. I first met him at his old studio and whether there or at his current studio, the atmosphere is very pious. You have seen how Bal Krishna looks - dark and with long tresses and Rahman reminded me in those days of some chhota bhagwan with that child-like innocence. Now of course he keeps his hair short, but the innocence remains. (Laughs) I remember when Lata (Mangeshkar)ji sang for the first time for him in that film - Jiya jale - she told me that she felt very lonely in the singer’s cabin!! That was because the studio’s design was such that the singer and those sitting at the recording console could not see each other and could only converse through the machine. Lataji
[arr] Danny Boyle is not doing James Bond
No Bond for Danny Boyle Posted: 04 March 2009 1306 hrs Photos 1 of 1 British director Danny Boyle's 'Slumdog Millionaire' clinched 7 awards at this years BAFTAs LONDON : British director Danny Boyle will not take the helm of the next James Bond movie, despite rumours that he might take the reins of the sequel to last year’s Quantum of Solace. Boyle is currently classified as hot property in Hollywood following the success of rags-to-riches drama Slumdog Millionaire, which swept the board at the Academy Awards and BAFTA ceremonies. A source told The Sun newspaper, Danny is the man of the moment and he is being bombarded with offers from studios. He has been offered the chance to direct the 23rd Bond film by Barbara (Bond producer). The EON team love his vision and think that it would work perfectly for the new look of Bond. Danny has always insisted he is more interested in the film than the money. However, with Daniel Craig’s involvement and the way the films are now structured - with the emphasis on the characters and plot rather than gags and gadgets - it is right up Danny’s street. Everyone on the EON team thinks Danny would be a fantastic addition to the Bond family. While the filmmaker insists he is flattered to be linked with the Bond brand, he has no plans to direct the next movie. A spokeswoman said, While Danny says he always has and always will enjoy the Bond movies he has no plans to direct one. Danny is naturally flattered to be thought of! The Oscar-winning director's other recent film credits include Sunshine, Millions, 28 Days Later and Trainspotting. - CNA/ap http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/entertainment/view/412949/1/.html

The UPA has not only usurped the theme of the Oscar-winning *Slumdog Millionnaire* to shore up its electoral prospects, it has also bought the rights to A R Rahman's Oscar-Winning song *Jai Ho* from T-Series. But not everyone's humming a happy tune not least of all the lyrical genius who penned the catchy *Jai Ho* lyrics. Don't make it political, it is such a nice lyrical song by Rahman, don't make it political, said Gulzar, Lyricist, Oscar Winner for *Jai Ho*. Sukhwinder Singh who has sung the song is of a slightly different opinion, he says, As long as this song is used to bring happiness, I don't have any objection to it. My work was to sing the song. The music company is totally free to sell the rights whosoever they want. As far as moral question is concerned, whether it should be used for political gain or not, I am of the view that if the song reaches out to more and more people and brings a smile on the faces, it's good and it serves my purpose too. This is the whole spirit with which I have sung it. http://music.ndtv.com/Music_Story.aspx?id=ENTEN20090085573type=musicindia
[arr] ...still speechless - BlaaZe
Monday, February 23, 2009 ...still speechless God is kind... WOW... what a day... what a weekend actually... Started off on a rather strange note, very bizarre indeed. After meticulous planning we worked out the kids schedules to workout a trip to the movies, (wife n kids and a friend). Delhi 6... and the movie was with a great message, which i believed in, so it was all good. Got through the rush, carrying my son, and though was sure i heard whispers of, 'is that bl...?' not once did anyone stop to speak or sign autographs or anything, which was cool, as the kids were with me and it was hopefully just a trip to the movies with family and friends... however, the next day, a newspaper carries the story of BlaaZe spotted at the cinemas, with family n friends, in his trademark yellow pants..?? with the dangling B chain..? and seemed very self conscious with a change in his attitude...? fame ke side effects..? The story was correct in only the fact that we saw the film at the theatre.. the rest is made up to fill lines...! For the record, blue shirt / black n white addidas trackpants... No B medallion ..and still appreciate a friendly word or two with fans...!!! But .. this lead me to thinking how delicate words/statements/lies can become, when actually all that matters should be the work... ... ...!! well, wanted to get that off my chest all weekend!! And with that the calls started for the next days run..this time it was for the pre oscars / oscars live on various channels, to be featured on whilst the show was on air... i found it hard to explain, but finaly did tell the people concerned who had been calling, i wanted to watch it in private, at peace and truly pray silently for Mr. Rahman's win... and it was all i wanted to do... and am thankful i managed to do it eventually. Mr. A R Rahman's first Oscar It felt strange to not want to do interviews at this time, when all i really thought about was wanting to speak to Mr. Rahman and tell him how amazing he is !! Truly, what a moment for him and ... what a moment for raqueeb and myself, to be mentioned alongwith Mr. Gulzar, at the Academy's is something that is God-sent. It seems to be a moment trapped in time in my mind, and am very humbled by his mentioning my name. Wow..again... and it was even more special cause i was with my family at home, watching it and praying within for his name to be announced...and when they did... what a moment indeed... god bless. Spoke to my sister who called from NY and even my BA Cinema college professor who saw the event live in LA... and my near and dear ones...they were so happy ..thank you, brother Rahman... Today is also Maha Siva Ratri day and will be at the temple most evening and night... If i missed your call in all this magic... hope you understand... am still kind of speechless... http://blaazespeaks.com/

[arr] Endhiran - Expensive title song to be shot
A song rumoured to be the title song for Rajinikanth’s Shankar directed Endhiran will be shot at Hyderabad. The song is a typical Shankar song where heroine Aishwarya Rai is shown showering her love on the hero Rajinikanth. Remember the Vaaji, Vaaji, title song shot on Rajini and Shriya in Sivaji, showing the superstar’s heroism? The song was picturised with all Shankar trademarks of splendor, glamour and glitz with Madhusree singing to A.R Rahman’s tune. Something similar in style with more richness and grandeur is being planned by the “showman of south cinema” Shankar on Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai for Endhiran accompanied by nearly 1000 junior artists, all of them wearing silver colored ‘Robo’ costumes. This song which was recorded recently by A.R Rahman was also sung by Madhusri. It will be one of the most expensive songs in Kollywood, as the Robo costumes with thongs worn by the group dancers is said to be very expensive. It will be shot on a set created by art director Sabu Cyril in a Hyderabad studio, and will be a major highlight of the film. http://sify.com/movies/fullstory.php?id=14866007

_PTI http://www.screenindia.com/news/tamil-film-industry-hails-rahmans-doubledelight-at-oscars/430290/ -- regards, Vithur -- regards, Vithur

[arr] HUM HINDUSTANI: Song as a slogan —J Sri Raman
*Answering Oprah Winfrey after performing on her popular show, AR Rahman said “Jai Ho” means “May victory be yours”. Victory will not be the slum-dwellers’ — whatever the hopes raised by fairy tales and fantasies — unless and until it comes through hard-won social change *Thirty-five eventful years ago, faced with a crucial general election, the Indian National Congress went for a slogan as its chief weapon. On the eve of another important parliamentary election, India’s own grand old party has added a song to its armoury. By all accounts, “Garibi Hatao” (remove poverty), the slogan adopted by Indira Gandhi in her struggle against inner-Congress enemies besides the opposition, was a brilliant success and galvanised the poor to back her in the battle of the ballot. Will the song “Jai Ho” from the Oscar-wining film Slumdog Millionaire prove as potent a poll propaganda tool? Will it prove so, above all, against its primary rival? The first thing the Far Right opposition Bharatiya Janata Party did after the announcement of the poll dates (from April 16 to May 13) was to dig up a past issue of presumed importance to Dalit (Untouchable) voters who the party had never even tried to woo earlier. With a profound air of discovery, BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani talked at a public meeting about the alleged betrayal by the Congress (in an election) of late Dalit leader and founding father of India’s constitution BR Ambedkar. The details of the debate need not detain us here and now. The question is whether and to what extent the opening move was going to help the party and its prime ministerial candidate. Most pundits are agreed on the answers: the move appeared to be only an attempt to avoid more pressing issues of the present and was hardly likely to win Dalit votes for the party of “Hindutva” and high castes. The first thing the Congress did, in contrast, was to buy exclusive rights over the song from T-Series, the electronic music titan, for its electoral use. Will the hit song, which gave AR Rahman his red-carpet experience in Hollywood, return the party to power? Indira’s slogan may sound today like one tailor-made for the India of the yesteryear. “Garibi Hatao” has been subjected to much ridicule down the decades as populist gibberish by revered media gurus of “economic reforms”. Inevitable, eventually, were cynical reactions to the slogan that aimed really at power rather than removal of poverty. These critics, however, would have commanded greater credibility if they did not seem to see any pro-people policy, any move towards economic democracy, as dangerously and despicably populist. Middle-class populism — now, that’s an entirely different matter. It is not only business pages and channels that have promoted baseless ideas of an “economic boom”, which is now proving a bubble for a large number of young Indians home and abroad who had stars in their eyes not long ago. The brief period of such hopes coincided with the BJP era in India politics from 1996 to 2004, and it culminated in the coinage of the slogan that captured the spirit of India Inc., the shrine of big bucks where the party of the temple really worshipped. The slogan led the BJP to a spectacular defeat in the general election of 2004. The question remains: is “Jai Ho”, the song of the Indian slum, of the hope of the homeless, more in tune with the time, with Manmohanomics, as “liberalisation” with a Congress label has been called? The party’s answer, of course, is positive and two-pronged. It claims, in the first place, that its social concerns and priorities have remained the same since the days of Indira’s so-called “socialism”, all but officially debunked by her distant successors. The party’ spokespersons insist that the common thread running through the Congress policies and programmes consists in their concern for “the common man”, the “aam aadmi” with whom it makes it a point identify on every public platform these days. Secondly, the party sees “Jai Ho” and Slumdog Millionaire as symbols of “an achieving India” that had made its advent on the world stage under conditions of the Congress-led government’s creation. That may sound like the devious “Shining India” logic, but party defenders of the song as a slogan pretend not to have noticed any similarity. Advani, trying to appear more voter-friendly than former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, is repeatedly recalling “Shining India” as a model of bad sloganeering. But he has remained silent on the song that will soon be the Congress chorus. Narendra Modi, the pride of Gujarat and the BJP and the next prime minister-in-waiting, has been chosen to meet the challenge and counter the nationally popular cassette. Modi has gone ahead with characteristic gusto. He regaled an audience the other day with the remark that the Congress deserved an Oscar for creating slums, without which there would have been no award-winning Slumdog Millionaire. No one asked the chief minister about the

Probably even his life. Ironically, though, he might not have lived to see it. Two days earlier while rehearsing for the ceremony a massive chandelier covering a large part of the ceiling came crashing down just seconds after the maestro had moved away from the spot directly underneath it. According to Rahman, he felt it was a warning not to take any of the good things happening to him too seriously. “If I hadn’t moved away,” he said, “I’d have become history in no time at all.” So too would have St Petersburg on June 30, 1908 if it hadn’t been for the movement of Earth. Because on that day, about 8,000 kilometres away in the central Siberian region of Tunguska, a large meteorite or comet exploded on impacting the atmosphere. The blast, which was about 1,000 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb, felled an estimated 80 million trees over 2,150 square kilometres and caused an earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale. However, due to Earth’s rotation, St Petersburg was out of harm’s way. Meaning, if the impact had occurred just four hours 47 minutes later, it would have completely destroyed the Imperial Russian capital. A little later still, and chaos and destruction would have reigned in densely populated Europe. Scientists say the chances of a similar near-Earth object hitting the planet in the future is absolutely possible and fairly high. Last week, for instance, we dodged a bullet when asteroid 2009 DD45 passed within 70,000 kilometres of our planet — a hair’s breadth on a galactic scale. In the past also several such collisions have occurred. Long before the dinosaurs ever lived, the planet experienced a mass extinction event — called the Great Dying — that was so severe it killed 90% of all life on Earth. The 21st century is undoubtedly the high point of our civilisation’s technology and many other fields of human endeavour. At the same time there are about a thousand kilometre-wide near-Earth objects up there that can unexpectedly fall out of the sky with catastrophic consequences. Perhaps there’s a warning here for all of us that we shouldn’t take our achievements too seriously either. Or as Rahman said in hindsight: “With the good came the rude reminder of how quickly it can all be snatched away.” http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/Cosmic-Uplink/This-asteroid-too-shall-pass/articleshow/4231176.cms -- regards, Vithur
