It has this ' hey i have heard this before' feel to it, but remains
 original to the last chord.

the composition does follow some broad rules of slow psychi rock.

Boys, test this track in original disc in any high end system.

If u guys happened to go to hyd, ask banjara hills music world dude to play

 Plain brilliant.

  His music is intellectually stimulating,

Dev D, his music does not reach me emotionally much, does not touch

I share that opinion. Seems that is why I have not included him yet in

Comedy songs also become hit, technically amazing songs also become
hit, but what makes a composer beloved of the listeners is thru songs
that touch the heart of the listeners.

Bringing this thread back to ARR, there was a time when people had
started saying ALL ARR SONGS SOUNDS ALIKE. Of course, those
listeners had not given enough time for these songs to grow on them to
understand the difference, but, let's remember that listener is the
king and the end judge. So, when the Latka Jhatka, maya machindra
telephone pole Hindi lyrics of Hindustani combined with a music that
has technical wizardry more than it had melody, listeners didn't feel
like exploring it at all and rejected that. Since those days, ARR has
improvised in many ways so that no one now says any bad thing about
 ARR's music.

I think Amit trivedi also has to improvised in similar way. Dev D's
music was more a comedy. It is not a drawback of Amit, it is just that
the movie needed such type of music and he has given that. He may be
having capability to give melodious heart touching songs, but, that is
yet to be shown. Gulal is an example where compositions were melodious
heart touching, kudos to Piyush. Amit Trivedi has to do films having
this genre of music to get taken seriously. currently he is and MD for
 the hip-hop-pop generation.

He should be given credit for what he's done so far, but should not
be compared to ARR as ARR is on a different plane altogether in my
  view.

You said it, Sunanthvn!

Seeing all these one sided replies criticizing reviewers who called it

Why is being an amateur something negative, something degrading???
Amateur is antonym of professional. Amateur is fresh. Amateur is
innocent. Amateur has not yet allowed his creativity got overtaken by
the pressures of the market.

Nobody in his right mind can call ARR a non-professional in the
positive sense of the word. A person with 18 year of proven history
from one top position to another top position is a great, commendable,
role-model professional. Every professional should follow him. So, if
anybody is calling such a professional having created something
amateur, and when you have heard VTV and know that it is not
amateurish in the negative connotation of the word, then there ought
to be some other meaning of the term that you have missed.

I think we should not try to give our connotation to every word we

I haven't heard VTV yet, just analyzing the term.

I've checked various VTV reviews abound, and not all reviews are full
throttle positive, which is fine. People are entitled to their own
opinions. But, one word that I'm seeing being thrown around by some on the
web to describe some of the music on VTV is amateurish .

Am I missing something? The music of VTV to me is very mature, thorough,
thoughtful, deep, intricate, purposeful, and very crafty. I don't know
based on what type of perception that some people are coming up with the
word amateurish. If it was just one person who used this word, I
wouldn't care to mention it and wouldn't care in general, but it's a word
used by several (won't mention names or websites to avoid off topic
discussions) . Someone just recently described the music of Hosanna as
 amateurish. Huh?

Can anyone throw some light onto this? Does anyone else feel this way? If
you do, that's fine, I would just like to know why you think so.

Though it has just been two days since I bought the cd, nevertheless for some
reasons, I feel as if I've been having an age old relationship with the
album. To tell the truth, when I first heard the songs, I did like the album
for the overall presentation. However, as the songs kept playing in my cd
player, I noticed that there was something extra special about this album.
The more I listened to it, the more I'm engrossed with it. And the more I'm
engrossed with it, the more I'm unwilling to part from it. In fact, I happen
to come across a mail written by our fellow friend who claimed that he now
takes a longer route back home in order to have some time alone with the
soundtracks. The moment I read it, I just couldn't help but smile...because
that's exactly how I felt when listening to the album myself...to spend some
time alone with the album and to uncover the truth of what's making it so
 spellbinding!

The followings are merely my thoughts on my new-found friendship with VTV.
I'm not a professional commentator nor do I have a profound knowledge as far
as music is concerned, thus kindly pardon me if there's any inaccuracy or
mistake in the expressions and words used below.

 1. Omana Penne

Omana Penne starts on a blissful tune coupled with the soothing voice of
Benny Dayal. I've always preferred Benny in soft melodies rather than in
fast beats or folk numbers. And as expected, Benny has done a wonderful job
here.  The first saranam was given an under-water- singing effect which
reminds me of Blue, nevertheless the similarities ends there.

The Kerala portion on the other hand, has a heavenly rhythm which leaves you
asking for more. It's always a privilege to hear ARR's usage of ethnic music,
even if it's only for a few seconds and he has done an excellent job here as
well. And needless to say, Kalyani Menon was the perfect choice for this. On
a further note, the nadaswaram used throughout the song was just mind
blowing. Initially I had my doubts if the real nadaswaram was used for this
particular number nevertheless clarifications given by fellow friends and a
quick check with  ARR's official website cleared my doubts. Kudos to ARR and
Natarajan for churning out an essentially ethnic and yet modern tune. Omana
Penne is definitely here to stay!

 2. Anbil Avan

The techno sound at the prelude seems to have traces of Santhipoma of Enaku
20 Unaku 18. To tell the truth, I didn't find this song to be particularly
astounding at first. However, repeated hearing has made me to change my mind.
Trust me, this song is highly addictive. Devan  did a great job, needless
to say. I couldn't think of any other singer who would have given the song
the same level of energy that Devan accomplishes.  Nevertheless, I must say
that Chinmayi was a revelation. I've always had difficulties identifying
Chinmayi's voice as she has the talent of modulating her voice texture and
style according to the mood of each and every song of hers. While she was
soulful in Oru Deivam (Kannathil Muthammittal) and angelic in En Uyir
Thozhiye (Kangalal Kaithu Sei), here she seems to present a western-based
singing. In fact, when I heard this song for the first time, I had mistaken
Chinmayi's voice to Vasundhara Das'. A check on the
 credits

revealed the truth. She sounds amazing!

Coming back to the music arrangements, ARR has again surprised everyone with
his choice of genre for a song such as this. The song basically expresses the
lovers' dreams of their marriage. While most would  have settled for a
melody for such a situation, ARR decided to grant a peppy, foot-tapping
number. And what an apposite choice that was. He effectively brought out the
elation felt by the lovers in a vivacious manner, while the inclusion of the
marriage tunes at the interludes provided a

Can Gopal or the regulars on the group fish out information as to when was
the FIRST BGM uploaded using the Yahoo group ?

I found a message number 5221 sent by Kailairajan Kailasanathan on November
30, 1999 informing uploading Mudhalvan BGM on ARR FTP...

In that case let's celebrate ( belated ) 10 years of BGM extraction through
this group in which so many have contributed, Such as Wassim (Kaissom), AJ,
Vithur, Aravind, Prathap and many such Rahmaniacs ( please excuse me as I
know I have missed many names )

We must thank all of them for unwrapping a priceless treasure of Rahman's
music. Dear BGM team, Thank you !

I think I have all BGMs collected through this group and listening to these
BGMs gives a rare insight into the movie and ARR's ability to make the scene
a memorable one. And they do make a unique mobile phone ring tone !

THE BEST BGM according to me SWADES !

Music is God’s gift to me, it just flows out of me: RahmanMRUDU NAIK
Thursday, January 21, 2010 7:16:57 AM Oman Time
Email the story Print the story RSS feed
MUSCAT: The much loved music composer A.R. Rahman has come a long way ever
since his fresh and charmingly lilting soundtrack for Tamil film Roja. With two
Oscars, a Golden Globe, a Padmashree, four Indian national and 24 Filmfare
awards to his credit, Rahman, who turned 44 recently, has become synonymous
with musical brilliance.

Rahman has been heaped with praise for bringing new verve and fi nesse to music
in India. The accolades have come by the dozen but what remains constant about
him is his shy and down-to-earth demeanour.

But what is striking about Rahman is his sense of dedication and devotion to
what he loves the most — music. In an interview with Times of Oman, the
extremely modest man says, “Music means everything to me. Music is a blessing
for me. It is God’s gift and it just flows out of me.”

The man who has showed the world new ways of making a song says he has no
favourites. “I am an open person. Like how they say: We all came from
one source, my philosophy is the same for music. Besides, good music can be
appreciated by everyone,” he says.

Rahman, who has effortlessly linked the global East West musical divide, says a
right frame mind can create musical masterpieces.

“It is like an incubation process. You just need the right temperature in your
brain. If you are too excited or too calm, nothing can happen. You need the
right frame of mind to create good music,” says Rahman.

On whether time management is a problem, he says, “Music integrity is always
about the personality. You don’t give work that is half-finished. You
first of all plan your timing in such a way that you have enough time to do
your best.” He explains that if he does 20 movies a year he might have that
kind of a problem. “I accept very few movies at a time so I am able to
concentrate,” says the man whose soundtrack of Bombay was listed in the ‘1,000
albums to listen before you die’ by The Guardian.

The composer who takes six months to one year to create a composition says,
“Directors give me enough time to do my job. Like others, I do have my bad days
but I try the next day. The next day is not the same.”

Despite Slumdog Millionaire’s huge success he is relieved there is no bid to
typecast him. “Movie music is all about script. It is important to absorb the
situation and emotions in a film before composing. So it is not about copying
my own stuff. It is about paying attention to what people have not experienced
before,” he says.

Rahman makes sure he chooses projects that complement his music. “I have worked
with the best in India. Right now I am working with Mani Ratnam and Shankar.
Internationally, if there is an interest in my music and they want me to
compose for them I would be interested in it,” he says when asked if there is
any director he would like to work with.

The music maestro has a special regard for Iranian films and says if somebody
offers him a project he would do it. “It has nothing to do with the Sufi
influence. I am basically a huge fan of cinema of that variety,” he says.

Yes, if there is something he does apart from music, it is watching films. “I
am a member of the Academy. So I get a lot of movies free now,” he smiles.
Though he now partially lives in Los Angeles, he doesn’t find it inconvenient.
“It doesn’t get tough. That is life. You can’t get everything in life,” he
says. Since Rahman’s work gained global prominence with Slumdog Millionaire he
has been offered international projects. He doesn’t see this as going away from
India but spreading out.

“For me it is more about expansion. Music has no boundary,” he says. Perhaps he
understands the global pulse and his songs appeals to every part of the world
and that is why his music really has no boundaries.

The star, who has undertaken several sellout concert tours in over 30
international destinations, is open to collaborations of different kinds.

“That is the way I am made. My journey through music is not about film music
alone. I have played bands, sang and composed. I have been involved
in things apart from film music. That is how you evolve as a musician,” he
says.

Rahman’s noteworthy contribution to music world is he has opened doors to new
voices. Is that a conscious act?

“My only criterion is talent. There are no strings attached. I don’t care
whether one is popular or unpopular, poor or rich, good looking or bad. For me
it is just about talent. If their voices compliment my songs, I take them on,”
he says.

Rahman is clear he doesn’t believe in favouritism.

“If you attach yourself with a singer it conflicts with the interest of the
movie. Yes, sometimes you get inspired by certain singers but it won’t be
permanent,” he explains.

Is there anything that inspires him, say, like the sea? “Sea? Not since

'Rahman
will collect Oscars like Filmfare trophies' - Resul Pookutty

MUMBAI: When it comes to music, 2010 has started on a good note for sure.

A R Rahman's track from Couples' Retreat 'Na Na..' has already been
nominated for this year's Academy Awards. For those who may have forgotten,
Slumdog Millionaire's now famous track 'Jai Ho' is also nominated at this
year's Grammy Awards.

Rahman's friend and Oscar winner Resul Pookutty is escatic about Rahman's
nominations, but more than anything else, the Kerala born sound techinician
is confident that this year too, Rahman will reign.

One of the reasons why 'Jai Ho' will score over others is because there
hasn't been any other track like 'Jai Ho' on an international level, says
Pookutty. This is one of the first original motion picture songs that is
being celebrated on such a large scale internationally - no other motion
picture soundtrack has done that in the past.. that gives me the confidence
that Rahman will bag the Grammys in this category for sure - there's no
doubt he'll pick up the Grammy.

Moving to Rahman's Oscar nomination for Couples' Retreat, Pookutty says the
west is already grooving to the Tamil songs on Couples' Retreat. His music
is transcending all the language and cultural barriers particularly because
Rahman has introduced 'language' as 'sound', he reasons.

In the past couple of years, Rahman has been the only musician giving music
that has resonated with the masses at some level and Pookutty too resonates
with the same sentiment. When I hear Rahman's music, I feel I have heard
his music somewhere - it has a quality of triggering a nostalgia at one
level, he adds, saying that even when he works on a masala movie with a big
star, Rahman brings in an element of sufism and spirituality.

Pookutty says that the West is in a way discovering Rahman's music, but
one of the reasons why I really feel proud of being associated with Rahman
is beacause he has taught us Indians how to love and respect other
traditions - he goes beyond in bringing together sounds from various
cultures, and I am sure he is going to bring home the Oscars like he
collects Filmfares - he's going to make the entire country proud, he adds.

[arr] Rahman replicated rhythmic accompaniment beats

2010-01-21 Thread A.R.Rajib
*Rahman replicated rhythmic accompaniment beats* - *Richard Mahesh,
Sampurn Media* Any guesses about what’s common between A R Rahman’s ‘Chiggy
Wiggy’ (*Blue*) and his nephew G.V. Prakash’s ‘Un Mela Aasadhan’ (*Aayirathil
Oruvan*)? These two songs have been rocking at top of charts for past six
months and still remain favorite numbers on everyone’s list.

Now, it’s revealed that A R Rahman has replicated the rhythmic accompaniment
beats from a famous album R. Kelly’s *Thoia Thoing*. When you play these
numbers together, nothing makes a big difference over the rhythmic spell.
Similarly, G.V. Prakash has picked the instrumental part on flute for his
‘Un Mela Aasadhan’. As in relativity, Yuvan Shankar Raja had scored a
prototyped music for ‘Adada’ *(Sarvam)*.

‘Un Mela Aasadhan’ has been making high waves in town for the catchy tunes
and lyrics. More than all, actor Dhanush and his wife Aishwarya Rajnikanth
crooning the song has made it yet more attractive.

cool with it, but my fans aren’t!”

Atlast.. fans have started to do justice for his soulful tracks, themselves! :D

I've checked various VTV reviews abound, and not all reviews are full
throttle positive, which is fine.  People are entitled to their own opinions.
But, one word that I'm seeing being thrown around by some on the web to
describe some of the music on VTV is amateurish .

Am I missing something?  The music of VTV to me is very mature, thorough,
thoughtful, deep, intricate, purposeful, and very crafty.  I don't know based
on what type of perception that some people are coming up with the word
amateurish.   If it was just one person who used this word, I wouldn't care
to mention it and wouldn't care in general, but it's a word used by several
(won't mention names or websites to avoid off topic discussions) .  Someone
just recently described the music of Hosanna as amateurish.  Huh?

Can anyone throw some light onto this? Does anyone else feel this way?  If
you do, that's fine, I would just like to know why you think so.

Re: [arr] Re: (non arr) Some song recommendations

2010-01-21 Thread Anish Gupte
Hey Guys!
How are u guys?...well i haven't really been following this thread a lot
lately..but this thread caught my attention.

Well..I'd like to agree with V.S.Rawat about Dev D. I didn't really like the
album as a whole too.

Anyway I have a few song recommendations.

The thing is ..once i like a particular MD/ song i tend to stick with that
only. In the Hindi Film Industry, apart from ARR, the only MD i really
really like is the trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. Their music is classy,
soulful, trendy, zesty and above all innovative and stylish to say the
least. There is something abt S-E-L which makes their music unique.

1) Noor-E-Khuda (My Name is khan)...the best song of the year so far IMO
2) Sajda (MNK)
3) Uff teri ada (Karthik calling karthik). ( very very average lyrics tho
lol).
4) Mitwa (KANK).

Songs by PRITAM who has developed into an interesting MD.

1) Tum Mile (Javed ali version).
2) Tu jaane na (unplugged version)..ajab prem...
3) Aaj din Chhadeya ( Love aaj kal)
Also song from Veer...Salaam Aaya ..nice romantic song.

  not in my opinion.

  His music is intellectually stimulating,
diverse, and crafty, but so far, from what I've heard in Aamir and
Dev D, his music does not reach me emotionally much, does not touch
me deep inside, does not impress me with overall sound, and lacks
the type of ambiance and soul that I most prefer and appreciate in
music in general. Just my opinion.

I share that opinion. Seems that is why I have not included him yet in
 the list of my favs.

He should be given credit for what he's done so far, but should not
be compared to ARR as ARR is on a different plane altogether in my
  view.

Rahman replicated rhythmic accompaniment beats

- Richard Mahesh, Sampurn Media

Any guesses about what’s common between A R Rahman’s ‘Chiggy Wiggy’ (Blue) and
his nephew G.V. Prakash’s ‘Un Mela Aasadhan’ (Aayirathil Oruvan)? These two
songs have been rocking at top of charts for past six months and still remain
favorite numbers on everyone’s list.

Now, it’s revealed that A R Rahman has replicated the rhythmic accompaniment
beats from a famous album R. Kelly’s Thoia Thoing.  When you play these numbers
together, nothing makes a big difference over the rhythmic spell. Similarly,
G.V. Prakash has picked the instrumental part on flute for his ‘Un Mela
Aasadhan’. As in relativity, Yuvan Shankar Raja had scored a prototyped music
for ‘Adada’ (Sarvam).

‘Un Mela Aasadhan’ has been making high waves in town for the catchy tunes and
lyrics. More than all, actor Dhanush and his wife Aishwarya Rajnikanth crooning
the song has made it yet more attractive.

  'Rahman
will collect Oscars like Filmfare trophies' - Resul Pookutty
