[arr] Re: Your ideal interview question

2010-03-04 Thread Swarlok

A question that has been on my mind for a long time ever since I heard Dil Se
(title track) and Thaniye (Rhythm):

How were you inspired to come up with these tracks? What exactly was the
mental/emotional/spiritual process you underwent which resulted in these songs?

These two songs for me will always be a hallmark of ARR's world-class skills as
a music craftsman.

[arr] Female version of Aaromale

2010-03-04 Thread Thulasi Ram
the female version of aaromale appears after a fraction of second when
trisha reveals her love to simbhu. OMG! i just cant get over it.. stunningly
mesmerizing and then the aaromale beat when both run to find a secured place
in her home is just awesome. sheer magic.

the entire scene is intense and the music just augments that scene to a new
level. brilliant performances add to the enlightment of that scene.
terriffic stuff. vl remain as an unforgettable scene i've ever seen as its
unseen before. last ones being from alaipayuthey and minnale...

watched the movie 3 times now. always great to enjoy movies like this

[arr] Catch the flavour of A R Rahman in Udaan

2010-03-04 Thread Siddiq Rahman
Catch the flavour of A R Rahman in Udaan
On the recommendation of superstar Salman Khan, the first blind band
Udaan got its big break with the album ‘Udaan Instrumental’ which was
produced by T-series and gave chance to Udaan Entertainment to showcase
their talent. The album turned out so well that T-series’ Kishan Kumar
decided to produce two to three albums every year with them.

Buzz up!
The
promoter of the band Keval excitedly shared some of the best memories
that they had while working with T-Series and says, “It’s been a while
we worked with Kishan Kumar ji but memories still echo in our mind. Our
work impresses him so much so that he went on to compliment us that our
music gives the flavor of A R Rahman’s style of music. I think such
compliments will always motivate us to perform better.”

He
goes on to add, “Early on, they purely took us on the recommendation of
Salman Bhai and never expected much from us, but when the final product
came out, it left everyone in shock.”

Thereafter, this band has
been on a roller coaster ride of musical success. They are currently
concentrating on Bollywood based theme music and a new fusion album is
also in the pipeline.

Music is a part of everyday life. And although not everyone pursues it
professionally, a lot of people have dreamt of a time playing on stage in a
 world famous band.

But it's the indie era, and musicians no longer need to be backed by the
music industry to play for the masses. It's a time when anyone with a great
 idea can leap for nirvana.

With Apple's GarageBand, you don't need a recording studio anymore. And
although it's certainly advised, you don't even need to know how to play any
instruments! Having a Mac and a feel for the music suffices to launch your
 own project.

Great topic, Chord . I too agree with Ram. It is traditionally believed that
geniuses more or less have some vice (arrogance, etc ). Their brilliance in
one area gives the leeway in the other , probably ;) That is thought to
enhance their music rather than take away from it. There are stories of
great Carnatic musicians who are very arrogant and short tempered.

The fact that Rahman is a genius without these vices, definitely adds to the
aura around him.

AJ, very interesting thought process and I too go through the same. Some of
my thoughts below which might help evolve this discussion. In your case I
think it is obvious that your admiration of the person is feeding into your
love of his music. Also, I dont think you are an average fan of ARR also,
you are probably a highly advanced, highly educated and highly influenced
fan :-) Same logic that might apply to average fans who just hear ARR music
and forget it in a few months might not apply to you.

But I dont think this logic is linear or works always or even in the
 reverse.

For example, if all the personal traits of ARR remain as is, but his music
was average, I dont think we would be having this discussion or forum. In
ARR's case it is a deadly combo of both. On the other hand, if the music is
brilliant, but the musician (any one or in this case ARR) does not have the
best of personal traits, would we enjoy the music any less ? I dont think
 so

Part of this is also cultural. In eastern cultures (including India) we
tend to adulate our artists and sportspeople, we put them on a pedestal and
expect them to be the best of human beings. That explains the large cutouts,
temples of film stars etc. Nothing wrong with it, just how we are as a
people. From this tends to flow our admiration of qualities like simplicity,
humility etc. Whereas in the western world there is a general separation
between a person and his/her craft. Due to the sheer admiration in the
western world of individual freedom, people tend to not worry much about
how the people are in real life. Yes, there is tremendous curiosity or
gossip interest in celebrities which tends to drive paparazzi to chase
britney spears, angelina jolie etc. Nothing wrong with that either, just how
 the western world behaves.

Another example is Sachin Vs Ricky Ponting. Indians adulate Sachin
including me. Most indians including myself dont like Ponting - reason is
simple, he is brash, arrogant and mostly abrasive. But ask an Australian and
he will have no value for Sachin's humility or simplicity, they just believe
that Ponting is the epitome of sports aggression and admire that quality in
him. If you look at their cricketing skills, they are pretty much equal,
just cold logic. But for me any day, Sachin is miles ahead, purely emotional
 decision !

To conclude, I think the answer to your question only lies deep inside you.
It depends on how much you emotionally relate to ARR, the higher the more
you will be influenced. Also, the same applies to each individual, once you
admire someone's craft (like in this case ARR's music) and also emotionally
feel you connect with the person or admire the qualities he/she possesses,
the more will be your attachment, love, admiration and adulation for the
 person.

This will be my question and i'm hoping this will be the answer from the legend
:)

Me : Sir, we know your a LEGEND in the Music world. But tell me why do you
think the world is so seperated? What is the need for all this terrorism and
scanvenging acts? .

ARR : If you see my getting philosphical during the OScars, I had mentioned
that I chose Love over Hate and I was able to get rid of bad things happening
around me, holding that kind of a lens on life. Life or Death is the only thing
that mankind cannot control. If that being the case, the mere existence is
happening through a Divine source. Now, the question again is which divine is
ruling us? For me, religion is like Mother to us. We believe in her and that
kind of bond is the best in this world. Similarly, a religion can be treated
the same way. It has trained me, brought me life and everything that I have
attained is through that faith. So my argument/ideology is to respect mankind.
If we can respect mankind, the inner meaning is we respect their
religion/ideologies too. Its like equally respecting someone else's Mother. Be
yourself and Let other be themselves too. Life can be a lot better after that
and it can unite the Whole world. Remember, We are the World.

Thanks, Ram for your thoughts...very insightful and in depth. I am an
emotional, right brain kind of person by nature, placing value on holistic
approaches and gestaltic frameworks, hence the over-arching considerations when
I think about ARR and his music. You made some great points below! Thanks

In eastern cultures (including India) we tend
to adulate our artists and sportspeople, we put them on a pedestal and
expect them to be the best of human beings.

Well I am still trying to find out one reason why are you so intolerrant

The post had only positive waves which we ARR fans like and nobody here pulled
even one negative comment on either AR or sachin. And moreover the fans here
liked it. This being an open forum I don't think it's objectionable to post
such messages unless it has abused somebody or has posts which aren't true.
Posts of these kinds are always welcome and it's left for ones thought either

New Delhi: Former president A P J Abdul Kalam and industrialist Ratan Tata
top the list of 100 most trusted Indians while artist M F Husain is at 91
and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati is at the very bottom, a survey
conducted for Reader's Digest has revealed.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is ranked seventh, one place below chess
grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand, Sachin Tendulkar is at number eight and
Nobel laureate Amartya Sen at 10th place along with Wipro chairman Azim
Premji and Indian Space Research Organisation M Madhavan Nair.

Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi is ranked 29th in the survey
published in the March edition ofReader's Digest that hit the stands
 Tuesday.

*Others in the top 10 list of India's most trusted Indians are former
police officer Kiran Bedi (3rd), Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy (4th),
music composer A.R. Rahman (5th) and cartoonist R.K. Laxman (9th).*

Among India's most trusted professions, teachers are at the top, followed
rather surprisingly by firefighters and farmers follow at number three.

Scientists and members of the armed forces share fourth position, with
doctors at sixth, pilots at seventh, pilots at seventh, surgeons at eighth,
nurses at ninth and engineers at 10th.

At the bottom end of the scale of 40 most trusted professions are religious
leaders (35), lawyers (36), police officers (37), government officials (38),
 realtors (39) and politicians (40).

The survey was conducted online by market research firm Digital Edge that
sent out 5,000 invitations, with 761 people responding by the cutoff date,
Digest editor Mohan Sivanandan told IANS on the phone from Mumbai.

The survey covered 30 cities, with two-thirds of the respondents being
under 35, possessing a bachelor's degree and three-fourth's male, he added.

Given this, Sivanandan has added a caveat in his editorial in the Digest.

Although we cannot claim this survey to be absolutely scientific, you'll
agree with me that the overall results mirror public perceptions fairly
accurately. Equally interesting are the views and explanations from experts.
On a personal note, I don't have cause to rejoice, because journalists are
ranked 30th among 40 professions, just below plumbers, the editorial says.

Thus, the survey has more than its share of surprises, with cricket captain
Mahendra Singh Dhoni ranked at 42nd, way below shooter Abhinav Bindra
(25th), while tennis star Sania Mirza is at 81st.

The respondents gave a massive thumbs down to politicians and sports
 administrators.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader L.K. Advani is at 94, Railway Minister Mamata
Banerjee at 96, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar at 97, Communist Party of
India-Marxist general secretary Prakash Karat at 98 and former railway
 minister Lalu Prasad at 99.

Indian Premier League commissioner Lalit Modi is just one notch above
 Advani.

Bollywood and the small screen have their share of places with actors
Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan at 14 and 18 respectively, with TV comic
Jaspal Bhatti at 43, scriptwriter Javed Akhtar at 46, Shah Rukh Khan at 53,
Sushmita Sen at 64, Rajnikanth at 67, Kamal Haasan at 71, director Anurag
Kashyap at 78, Malayalam actor Mohanlal at 80, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan at 82
and TV serial producer Ekta Kapoor at 95.

Among the other surprises in the list, President Pratibha Patil is ranked
way below at 67, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia
at 41, Home Minister P. Chidambaram at 50, novelist Khushwant Singh at 51
and environmentalist R.K. Pachauri at 61 along with CNN-IBN Editor-in-Chief
 Rajdeep Sardesai.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi is at 72, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee
at 73, Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor at 84, Leader
of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley at 86, Gujarat Chief Minister
Narendra Modi at 87 and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at
 89.

Some of the questions 'I' havnt heard in his interviews:

ARR asked this question to Lata Mangeshkar on her birthday - what keeps you
going (for so many years); force that drives / inspire you to give your best
each time, would like to ask ARR same question.

One could also ask him to share some of his memories while recording, those are
always interesting to hear. We havnt heard much about his kids either (in
interviews).

His religious side has helped him to have this humbleness and being
down-to-earth, despite of having hectic schedule how does he get time for
prayers? to practice the religion.

It is so easy to get carried away by fame, yet ARR hasnt changed (as a person),
how has he managed it?

Sometimes director / producer dont like specific tune that he composes, and
rejects that composition.. what he feel at the time. Does that inspire him to
create a new one or he is somewhat disappointed as he might have spent few days
on that composition

Quite often he is asked to give tunes fast, does he feel that pressure to
deliver quickly? Has there been compositions where he felt he could have done
better if he had more time, or similar case with singers, has he ever felt that
I should have chosen this xyz singer for this song.

.. and given a chance to interact with him, I would definitely request him to
do something about his previous movie's background scores, may be putting them
up on his official site's webstore would be appropriate. Dunno

Re: [arr] Re: [Non-ARR] For beginning music creators in our group

2010-03-04 Thread wiredbeats
hey man,

For starters i advice to practice in acid express from sony. You will pick up
basics of timing, beat mapping etc. You can't do MIDI there, but you get a good
sense of beats and layering. You can have 25 tracks max in the free version
which is good enough. You can perhaps paint some loops and practice. If you
want to do MIDI then try acoustica mixcraft. The free trial is good enough to
connect your MIDI keyboard and create some decent quality original tracks.

And if you want to pay like a good boy or download ripped versions then you
have Nuendo. Steinberg also makes a product called Sequel which i found to be
super. The you have adobe audition, ableton...the list goes on.I found most of
them in this catagory good and it is left to you to exploit the features.

And then , userfriendlyness. All of them are user unfriendly initially, but
once you get a hang of it, its difficult to move out of it.

The thing is, once you are good with MIDI and loop based stuff. You are pretty
much done when it comes to production. You can handle mid level production
projects and will be mentally tuned to check out reason, pro-tools or logic.
These are expensive ones...so if you are not into professional stuff then you
can stay away.

now, comes the sound part. When you mix or playback you production you should
get a flat audio. No sugar added.Ideally you should use monitor speakers, they
give real flat sound. But sometimes we don't get to use them at homes. So you
may use a good altec lansin or anyother good comp speakers which does not have
any speaker controls. As in the knobs in the sub woofer etc. Also go to your
sound card settings and turn off all EQs. This should be work fine. Ofcourse
not professional level, but decent.

Wired Beats, what are the DAWs you had found user-friendly for beginners?

I had heard that ARR had used Cool Edit in the production of Veerpandi
Kottaiyile (Thiruda Thiruda)...could someone confirm?

I heard this in 2002 from a friend who used to tease me about using Cool Edit
as he was a Soundforge fan (and an ARR fan too). But when he heard from someone
that ARR had used Cool Edit for the Thiruda Thiruda album, he came rushing and
borrowed a copy of my Cool Edit software :D

Music is a part of everyday life. And although not everyone pursues it
professionally, a lot of people have dreamt of a time playing on stage in a
 world famous band.

But it's the indie era, and musicians no longer need to be backed by the
music industry to play for the masses. It's a time when anyone with a great
 idea can leap for nirvana.

With Apple's GarageBand, you don't need a recording studio anymore. And
although it's certainly advised, you don't even need to know how to play any
instruments! Having a Mac and a feel for the music suffices to launch your
 own project.

We're proud to be able to present our next eBook, Recording Your Next Hit
with GarageBand, a forty-odd paged free PDF, written by our very own Jeffry
 Thurana (supersubconscious) .

Start off by conceptualizing the song, and take your first steps with the
GarageBand application. Learn how to use MIDI instruments, or add digital
loops. Take notice of the different indie publishing `plans', and get ready
to create your first song, from idea to release.

A melody shouldn't be kept waiting. Download The GarageBand eBook

[arr] The Rahman-Filmfare Affair

2010-03-04 Thread A.R.Rajib
 The Rahman-Filmfare AffairIndiaGlitz [Wednesday, March 03, 2010]

He might have won the most prestigious award for music – the Grammys but do
you know how many Filmfare awards has A R Rahman received so far?

A R Rahman, music’s very own child, has been receiving accolades from all
parts of the world for his work. Perhaps he doesn’t have blood in him but
music. He’s got the Oscars, Grammys and a couple of other Critics awards
from the USA and the world over. One thing people didn’t realize is his
recognition, way back home in India.

Rahman was awarded the Tamil Nadu State Film award for Best Music Director
for his first movie ‘Roja’ and later on he went on to be awarded the same
title 6 times. Apart from the state noticing his talent, he received the
National award for his first movie. He totally has four National awards for
Best Music with him so far.

Ever since he made his debut in ‘Roja’ in 1992, he had won the Filmfare
awards for music 25 times - including Best Music director, New Music Talent
and Best Background Score - Hindi and Tamil put together.

Another more interesting part is, Rahman has won the Best Music Director
Award, for 10 years in a row right from 1992 to 2002. After 2002, He
involved himself with international projects.

Again from 2006, the affair with Filmfare continued. He was awarded Filmfare
Best Music Director for the Hindi blockbuster ‘Rang De Basanti’ and every
year from then till ‘Delhi 6’ in 2009. In 2007, he won the Best Music
Director award in Hindi for mentor Mani Ratnam’s ‘Guru’ and in Tamil for
Rajinikanth starrer ‘Sivaji’. Just gets to show, he has affirmed his
presence throughout the country.

If that’s private sector, let’s move to the Government sector. The
Government of India recently awarded him the ‘Padma Bhushan’, India’s 3rd
highest civilian award.

A R Rahman has a series of movies lined up for this year and the next. And
these are only going to increase the count of those priceless awards. Keep
counting!

[arr] Confirmation about next film of ARR with Gautham......

Does this confirms that ARR will be part of this project? Gopal or Vijay may
clarify this.

Details of Gautham- Ajith film

By Moviebuzz  | Friday, 05 March ,
2010, 11:00

It’s confirmed that Gautham Menon and Ajith are coming together in Dhyanidhi
Alagiri’s new untitled film.
Gautham in an interview said: “I have to complete the low budget
thriller with Sameera Reddy and newcomer Veera, which will take a
month. Then I will start work on my film with Ajith towards the end of
May”.

Gautham denied his Ajith film has been titled Thuppariyum Anand. Says Gautham:
“Yes I have written a script called Thuppariyum Anand,
about a detective in 1920’s Madras and given it to Mr. Kamal Hassan and
Mr. Aamir Khan. I’m hoping that one of them will do the film.”
Added Gautham: “Once and for all I would like to say that the Ajith
film is untitled and it is a mass entertainer. All technicians who
worked with me in VTV will be a part of this new film, while I’m on the
lookout for a heroine.”
Meanwhile Ajith has signed up for one season of F2 racing. The star is
quoted saying: “ Since Gautham wanted some more time to complete the
story and scripting, I decided to indulge in my passion, as I want my
50th film to be a win-win situation for all involved in the film.”

Music ,if not by Original CDs then can he give them to us by a free download
server or something like that .. As Music is for listening .. not keeping in
Ur HDDs*

Secondly ... *Will u please Compose an Non-Indian album ? No Classicals or
soft numbers please .. You have already done so much that There is nothing
much to conquer in these genres ...Let's do an Complete RnB or Rock/Metal
Album ... With Sensible english lyrics ..And please No Indian Flavours *

There is hundreds of questions to ask ... Don't have that much time to write
them down .. Right now .. Will do it later on !!
