Hi chord,

Happy you brought this topic..

Yes, I was surprised that AR missed VB's name.
But it was just that he forgot. They do have lot of respect for each other. For
ex, when RDB got the film fare for best music, AR said
'My favourite album of the year is OMKARA'. So I am sure both share great
respect for each other.

Hope I dont start a regional war by saying these.

I just felt while watching filmfares, bollywood treats AR better than
Kollywood/tamil film industry does. I loved the ovation they gave in film fares
this yr and last yr,SRK's speech, Karan Johar's speech last year. Wonderful and
so happy at the respect they give for our AR.

In tamil, they either hesitate to praise AR, of if they do they ensure
they praise another MD equally ( no names ), and few want to drag him into
conterversies. What not?

Though being a tamilian myself, i am very happy that he moved to bollywood
early and now in hollywood :)

AR has taught all of us to love all, so lemme try my best to stick to it :)

It was so awesome to see ARR winning the filmfare award so graciously and
amidst bollywood's finest with great ovation given. Very nice of SRK to
point out one of the greatest talents in this country and the world and
request another ovation. That was classy on SRK's part.

One small observation. when ARR received the award, he as always spoke
very down to earth and unassumingly. I loved that he mentioned the other
nominee composers of Pritam, Shankar, Amit, and he said that he liked their
 works.

However, I noticed that he did not mention Vishal Bharadwaj's name, who was
also a nominee for best music. Now, I interpret that as a simple oversight
on AR's part and I'm sure AR likes Vishal's music, but I just hope that
Vishal didn't feel too bad or hurt. Vishal is a classy, down to earth guy
too, so would think that he too thought as an oversight. Perhaps AR went to
Vishal later and said, Oops, sorry, forgot to mention your name too and
perhaps they had a joke about it.

Any thoughts about this? I'm always curious about the relationship between
AR and Vishal, since they are both so supremely talented, both geniuses in
their own sphere. I have a feeling they both very much admire and respect
 each other's works.

[arr] Rahman to write autobiography?

2010-03-17 Thread Siddiq Rahman
Rahman to write autobiography?

Oscar winning music director A.R. Rahman will pen his experiences starting
fromRoja (his debut film) to the yet-to-be released Mani Ratnam's Raavan.
Reportedly the book will be of a coffee table kind and will also
contain photos of about 300 singers with comments from the Mozart of
Madras.
Rahman began composing film music with Mani Ratnam's Roja (Tamil) in 1992 after
assisting Tamil film maestro Ilaiyaraja for
nearly a decade. He was awarded the Rajat Kamal award for Best Music
Director at the National Film Awards for the film, the first time ever
for a debut composer and after that, his career has shown an
ever-increasing upward trend. Roja was also listed in TIME's
Top 10 Movie Soundtracks of All Time. Rahman went on to win the
National Award three more times, for his scores for Minsaara Kanavu in
1997,Lagaan in 2002 and Kannathil Muthamittal, the most ever by any composer.
And he has won the Filmfare Award 25 times!

[arr] Veer director snaps up Rahman deal!

2010-03-17 Thread Bivin Chandra
AR Rahman continues to scale new heights. The music maestro has sold his three
finale shows (Manchester on 23 July, Birmingham on 24 July, London on 25 July)
of his forthcoming world tour to begin in June for a whopping Rs 10 crore
(approximately).

Vijay Galani, producer of the Salman Khan starrer Veer, has bought the three
shows. The deal was finalised last week in Mumbai.

Galani refused to quote the price but confirmed that he has bought the three
shows. “Yes, I have purchased the finale shows of AR Rahman's concert and I am
looking forward to the big occasion,” said Galani.

But didn't Galani suffer huge losses in Veer? Galani replied, “Veer and AR
Rahman concerts are two different things altogether. What has Veer got do with
this?”

A close friend of Galani confirmed that the Veer producer has indeed bought the
three shows to be held in Birmingham, Manchester and London for Rs 10 crore.
Galani's friend said, “Though in practice, the deal has been struck for Rs 10
crore, Vijay Galani

Rahman will bear the cost of lights, sound effects, editing and the maintenance
of his big team throughout the shows.”

“AR Rahman has a big fan following wherever he goes. Galani will earn a lot
through these shows. It's a very good business deal,” added Galani's friend.

Re: [arr] Review of VTV Lyrics (Average). What's your opinion ???

2010-03-17 Thread Srinivasa Krishnan
The lyrics are perfect fit for the movie.. Lyrics should reflect the mood of
the movie and it happened very well in VTV..

This is the second time, Thamarai is working with ARR..

She worked in Thenali for Injarungo and had won a Tamilnadu State Award for
Best Lyricist.

On Sun, Mar 14, 2010 at 2:35 PM, jayram m.n jayram...@yahoo.com wrote:

I admire and enjoy some of the good songs written by Thamarai. She has
given some memorable pieces like Suttum Velli Sudarey from Ghagni, Kangal
irandal from Subramanyapuram and so many others. The list is pretty long.

But my overall impression is that the lyrics in VTV was kind of average
 lyrics (or below average).

 (1) Hosanna and Ommna Penne - Both these songs can be remembered without
any lyrics, because of the catchy tune, main tag-word selected for the
 songs.
 (2) Vinnaithaandi varuvaya and Manipaaya - Better lyrics with good flow of
words in both these songs. Definitely promising.
 (3) Anbil Avan : Okay lyrics (most of the lyrics consists of rehashed
marriage oaths which is a cool idea).
 (4) Kannukul Kannai : Sounds more like a dialogue rather than a poem.
 (4) Since I don't understand Malayalam, I cannot say much about Aromale
lyrics. But from the translation that appeared in this forum, the lyrics
 sounds quite impressive and imaginative.

She has definitely struggled to write the songs for VTV. Perhaps she needs
to work more with ARR Sir to understand his style of composition and tunes
 to give much better lyrics.

Sorry for being little bit harsh with my review, but I expect more
memorable lyrics Thamarai (especially with ARR Sir).

March 12, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): Jaidev Kumar, the music director, who
garnered fans on the strength of his most celebrated song, Dil Le Gayi Kudi,
now offers his latest work - Sukhmani - Hope of Life. He promises listeners
a variety of flavours in his numbers, taking Punjabi music to another level.
Overwhelmed by the fact that he was working with personalities like Gurdaas
Maan and Juhi Chawla, Jaidev cannot thank them enough for their support.

*Who do you think is the best music director in the industry?*

A. R. Rahman, undoubtedly. I admire the way his music speaks to the
listener. He gives music and lyrics a different perspective, creating a mood
that surprises even the most seasoned listener. What makes him special is
the purity in his music. In comparison, I am a little fish in a big pond,

 Guys,

 http://www.youtube. com/watch?
 v=Qig0xHh3me8http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qig0xHh3me8

Subject: [arr] Revisiting Taj Mahal Album | A Mammoth Innovation!!

Producer and Director : Bharathi Raja
Music : A R Rahman
Lyrics: Vairamuthu
Cast : Manoj, Riya Sen, Radhika and Revathy

Pls Note: The revisit is too lengthy..my apologies for that..i couldnt make it
short...coz my feelings for this album is infinitely large..!!

The very name Taj Mahal evokes a lot of passion, romance and warmth! When
films with such titles goes to the hands of someone like the Meastro A R
Rahman, it gets all new definition and stands in its own glory and vigour! Like
how the Emperor Shahjahan built the legendary monument for his lady love, ARR
has built this glittering golden palace inside our hearts with his signature
styled experimentations and mammoth innovations of new sounds which we never
heard of before..!

Bharathi Raja - A R Rahman duo may have given many timeless classics, but for
me, Taj Mahal stands as tall as the Taj Mahal monument! Taj Mahal was
originally planned to have a totally urbanite modern saga as its plot..but
Bharathi Raja, with his proven rural, rustic themes, made a U turn and chose to
make it as another village based story! He launched his own son Manoj in the
lead role along with the very raw, young Riya Sen. Somehow the chemistry never
worked between these two and the film's fate turned turtle at the box office..!
Nevertheless, it could boast of possessing one of the world's best musicians
magical scores..!

Thiruppachhi Aruvaala | Palghat Sriram, Chandran, Clinton Cerejo, Kalpana

Belonging to the league of Adrenalin pumping, high spirited, aggressive songs
of ARR, Thiruppachhi Aruvaala ignites some of our deep buried anguishes. If
you give a deep ear towards the instruments in the initial moments of the song,
you feel shell shocked..! ARR dwells just with a basic beats rhythm coming out
from that basic drums which you see in your everyday life on the streets in the
hands of local help seekers! Giving company to these drum beats are the cool
whistles blown by probably ARR himself! The singers ooze out aggressiveness in
their full throated rendition. Palghat Sreeram is one of those able singers,
whom this world should take notice of! He,along with Chandran, brings in the
perfect attitude required for the song. Another unnoticed singer Kalpana haunts
with her lower octaves lines, particularly in the lines where she makes fun of
the male.Clinton Cerejo, provides able support in the second interlude with some
wierd western lyrics!!
ARR surprises us with some western vintage beats in the second interlude.
Total Energy booster..!!!

Adi Manja Kizhange | Febi Mani, Ganga Sitharasu, Feju, Kanchana

Short and Sweet All-Female , fun filled song!! ARR has constantly belted
out the all-woman songs since his Kaadhalan days (Indirayo Ival Sundariyo) to
the latest Gendha Phool. Adi Manja Kizhange offers some fun and happy
moments both audically and visually! Again ARR goes with a single Rhythm
pattern of basic drums with some vague female hummings interlaced. Hats off to
all those aforementioned 4 harmony singers who have been with ARR since his
Roja days..! It seems like ARR created such a song only to thank them for this
long association. !

Kizhakke Nandavanam | Theni Kunjarammal, Febi Mani, Ganga Sitharasu,
Feju,Kanchana

The same harmony singers continue their spell, but this time in the company
of the most unusually sounding singer in ARR's career of songs ever...Theni
Kunjarammal. .!!! Everytime this old woman croons for ARR, the song gets its
own undefined charm!! She starts the song by calling out the names of many
women Machhakanni, Mayyilkunju. .. which are absolutely hilarious to
hear!!!ARR offers a very light hearted comic effect composition with some funny
beats..! The awesome foursome singers then start their lines with same zeal and
keep up the mood strong!! Never miss to hear the minute murmurings of Theni
Kunjarammal...Adi Vaadi Aathi...:D

Echi Elumichi 1 | Manoj, Rahib, Arundhati
Echi Elumichi 2 | Krishnaraj, Rahib, Arundhati
First Interlude VEENA | Parthasarathy
Second Interlude FLUTE | Naveen

Welcome to The Alps, The Himalayas, The Savvanas and almost all scenic
isolated hilly and scenic places of the world!!!. Those are exactly the exotic
places that this awesome number carries our senses and imaginations on its
strong shoulders! From where does this meastro acquire energy , so strong, to
pull the entire world towards him??!!?.!! Maayye Mayyee Ooo by Rahib(Or is it
Raqueeb??) and followed by the female chorus is one of the best chorus part of
the

The Chennai based Tanvi Shah, a popular playback singer became the first
women from India to win a Grammy Award for her part in the song *Jai Ho*.

She shares the Grammy with AR Rahman and poet and lyricist Gulzar.

Tanvi wrote the Spanish lyrics which were part of the superhit song and was
also one of the singers who rendered it.

It was a wild ride and I feel blessed although it has been a roller coaster
ride. I hope it goes this way. I'm going to work 500 percent harder. Am
quite superstitious about my projects. Getting quite a few good projects.
You'd certainly come to know, said Tanvi Shah, Grammy Award Winner.

[arr] Earth song

2010-03-17 Thread A.R.Rajib
Earth song Posted: Sunday , Mar 14, 2010 at 1558 hrs

 s
*One of the most versatile singers in the Hindi film industry is finally
getting heard. Rekha Bhardwaj on her journey so far.*
*When Delhi 6 director Rakeysh Mehra first heard Rekha Bhardwaj sing, he
told her husband, film-maker Vishal Bhardwaj, “Aise lagta hai jaise 400 saal
purani aawaz sun rahein hain (it seems as if we are listening to a
400-year-old voice).” The reticent AR Rahman promised Rekha a solo song
because he didn’t “want to waste” her in a chorus song.*

Such accolades are hard to come by in showbiz. But they do to Bhardwaj—she
of the soothing voice and earthy notes. Be it the sensuous Namak from
Omkara, the raw Phoonk de (No Smoking), the harkats of Ehi thaiyaa motiya
(Laga Chunari Mein Daag), the mischief of Genda phool or the seductive Raat
ke dhai baje (Kaminey), Bhardwaj is on a song.
But when we catch up with her on a busy morning, music is far from her mind.
Her 14-year-old son, Aasman, wants to know the exact date when he had
chicken pox and typhoid so that he can fill an admission form. The cook
wants to know what to make for “sir.” A minute’s discussion reveals that her
film-maker husband will be having “dalia and moong dal” for lunch while for
the rest of his crew who are in the office for a meeting will be served
“aloo palak and bhurji.”

“No matter how successful you become, household chores never leave you,”
says Bhardwaj, who takes her home as seriously as her songs. And even though
she admits she’s “managing only 2.5 hours of riyaaz when she should be doing
four hours”, she doesn’t regret playing wife and mother. “I love to cook.
Vishal says that when I cook, he doesn’t fall ill,” she says. But when she’s
recording, she “switches off” from the world.
Bhardwaj’s songs may have only recently become popular but her tryst with
music began when she was a child. “My father was very keen that my sister
and I learn classical music. We didn’t cut cakes on birthdays, we used to
have baithaks where we were encouraged to sing thumris, ghazals or bandish,”
she says.

At the age of 12, she enrolled at the Gandharva Mahavidyala and studied
under the tutelage of Pandit Amar Nath who advised her to eat well for you
need “strength for your voice to come out”. Later, she graduated in music
from Delhi’s Hindu College. The learning is still on. In fact, she’s looking
forward for a trip to Delhi so that she could spend “five days in learning”
from the seniormost disciple of her deceased guru, Amarjeet Kaur.

She also inspired her husband to pursue music seriously. “Vishal had a film
background as his father was a lyricist but he wasn’t serious about his
music and was hell-bent on becoming a cricketer. He used to write ghazals
whereas I was the star of the college,” she says. A comment by her on his
ghazal writing skills was conveyed to him by a common friend at college,
motivating him to learn about music. “He decided to learn music so that he
could impress me,” she says.

It was now Vishal’s turn to inspire his wife to sing professionally. On her
husband’s insistence and Gulzar’s encouragement, Bhardwaj released her
Sufi-inspired album, Ishqa Ishqa in 2004. Though it got critical acclaim,
Bhardwaj didn’t get a single call for work. “I think people had this
misconception that I will only sing for my husband,” she says. Music
director Shamir Tandon was one of the first ones to offer her a song for the
film, Red Swastik. Vishal, of course, had used her voice in films like Jahan
Tum Le Chalo, Maqbool and Chachi 420.
But the big hit was still elusive. “Vishal would say that it’ll all change
the day he comes up with a melancholic, soulful song.” That was Namak. And
the rest is history. Bhardwaj though had almost backed out from singing it.
“Vishal’s pressure and the variations in the composition scared me. I backed
out. Vishal played the recording of the rehearsal to me. That gave me
confidence,” she recalls.

*That confidence is now reaping more hits. Her songs have earned her a cult
following. She tells us of a man in Delhi who’s so enamoured by Genda phool
that he has started a business of distributing marigold seeds. “He wants me
to come to Delhi to inaugurate it. It’s like a Genda phool movement,” she
says.*

*She attributes her current fan following to Rahman, whom she admires so
much that she “couldn’t sleep the night before I met him and even bought a
new kurta for the meeting”. “I found that so strange about myself but then
it’s Rahman”, she says.*
Though she loves music, she’s not too

i have clearly stated there its is not soulful in my definition. Lets put it

1.Anjali - Duet
2.Kannake Mai Azhagu - Pudhiya Mugam
3.En Uyir Tozhiye - KKS
4.Sonnalum - Kadhal Virus
5.Hawa Sun Hawa - Ada

8.Tu Muskura - Yuvvraaj
9.Hosanna - VTV
10.Hum Hai Iss Pal Yahan - Kisna
11.Kadhalenum - Kadhalar Dhinam

and ofcource the list can go on, but these r the 1 strike my mind for now. For
me, the songs of d6 r just not in the caliber of these songs. But im happy its
a hit for ARR and it has hit the right chords for many, good for him and for u
too. Its not a loss for u and its not a loss for me. ARR has compensate for me

As an AR fan learn 2 things
AR is an ambassador of peace and music is his medium.
Dont let or indulge yourself where a debate can turn unhealthy circumstances or
fight.
Debating is always good as long as both parties are benefitted with knowledge
from each other.

And coming to a purest Carnatic composition from AR I dont think he has done
it neither has any other MD where the substance is a film music of recent
times. One has to resort to what is called as mishr formation and AR is very
clever in doing it which many sarcastically call it cunning way. The result
is half the people enjoy it and the other half who analyse finds his genius
hidden. What AR many times does it extracts (exploits) the blend of a raag and
carefully fuses it with other and this can be done by the only who are well
versed and have every raag in their mind always. And let your friend know that
to sustain himself at the peak for so long in an industry at time where there
are thousands of music directors are available requires ability and its not
just luck that supports.

[arr] Re: Currently, rank order these ARR albums.

2010-03-17 Thread Dinesh Scaran
agreed, new kind from ARR and ofcource in general. Masakalli had a very special
twist in the song, something unusual but gripping and catchy. This song stands
out clearly, no doubt. I do not wish 2 comments on other songs, as i dont want
to hurt the feelings of the lovers of the song and create a huge war here.
Already known enough there are some very 'well mannered' members around with
extremely 'polite' manner to express their view.

Anyhow, Yuvvraaj, VTV, ADA were albums of gold. Each seconds of the songs in
the album spells magic really well for me. Esp VTV and Ada. All the songs were
made out of gold. Truly happy to have these kinda albums around when 'kuthu'
and disco songs r the preferable choices of the people nowadays.

D6 could have been the last in list, but Couples Retreat is there to safe
that spot. Not that these albums were bad, but they did not reach in to me.
Even Blue did wonders for me, it had the ARR punch with the tunes.

D6 album was a very, very average album from ARR FOR ME. I only liked
Masakalli and Gendha Phool. And Gendha Phool eventually was not an ARR
composition. So this only means i liked Masakalli out of all the numbers
there. I just couldnt relate myself with the songs there. Nothing soulful
in it for me to stick to it. Again, my definition of soulful could bring a
  different definition all together.

Whats Delhi 6 in front of those gorgeous compositions in VTV, Ada and
  Yuvvraaj?

After his recent successful tour of Australia music maestro A R Rahman has
announced his plans for London rather differently.

The London Philharmonic Orchestra performs the works of the celebrated Indian
film composer A R Rahman on April 07, 2010. This unique concert will feature
the first ever orchestral performance of many of his best-known works. After
winning two Academy Awards for Best Song and Best Score for the film `Slumdog
Millionaire' in 2009 A R Rahman's music is transcending all barriers across
 the globe.

A R Rahman will attend the event and speak about his work during the concert,
as well as taking part in a question and answer session after the concert.

So all you Londonwalas, wait for the ARR magic to begin on April 07.

Re: [arr] Royal Festival Hall THE MUSIC OF AR RAHMAN

2010-03-17 Thread Indmov Buff
I bought tickets for this event on the 19th of February (same day as it was
opened to the public as I wanted to get good seats) in the hope that I would
see AR perform with LPH. But only found out yesterday that I was wrong and that
he'd be part of the audience instead.
My humble request is that more information about events such as these should
probably be advertised/announced officially on Rahman's website a bit earlier,
given that the event tickets were open about a month ago. More transparency on
such events would certainly be useful, I feel. Not sure if anyone who's part of
the website development team is inthis group but just wanted to put my thoughts
across on this one. It would not have changed my decision on buying the ticket
but I wouldn't have got as excited as I did in the hope that AR would conduct
the LPH or even play an instrument. But nevertheless, I look forward to this
one. I doubt they would let us record anything inside the theatre
unfortunately.

Vijay
Prakash hopes for brighter innings in 2010

MUMBAI: Vijay Prakash has been contributing to the Bollywood music scene for
close to a decade now and is slowly but steadily making his presence felt.

Hailing from a musicians' family in Mysore, the singer was exposed to
Carnatic classical music from an early age. I was exposed to Carnatic music
for the initial 20 years of my life. But then there was an urge to explore
myself in different genres. I wanted to move out and test my skills on a
wider spectrum. The singer came to Mumbai and joined Suresh Wadkar as his
student in 1996 to learn Hindustani Classical music.

In 1999, Prakash took part in the Zee TV music reality show Saregama
Challenge then hosted by Sonu Nigaam then, where he was the mega finalist.
It was a good platform to let yourself be known to the world, he says.

Prakash has lent his voice for over 3000 jingles for several top jingle
music directors including Leslie Lewis, Salim Sulaiman and several voice
overs. But it is difficult to give justice to your talent in the 30-40
second jingle, says Prakash who has also sung for the background score of
movies like Main Hoon Na, Tere Naam, Krrish and some 40 other films.

The singer whose debut film was Baag for music director Ismail Darbar, got
his big break came when A R Rahman roped him to sing for Swades. He then
went on to sing for various music directors including Shankar Ehsaan Loy.
My full fledged solo song was for Illayaraja for Cheeni Kum. All the songs
I had sung prior to this included multiple singers and I dint get noticed.
But nevertheless, it was a good experience working with such talented
people. The singer also got noticed for the raga based track Manmohini in
Rahman's Yuvraaj.

Prakash has also released 10-12 spiritual albums with Times Music before his
big moment of glory came with Oscar winning track 'Jai ho' for which he
mouthed the powerful words. The singer's moment of glory I am greatful to
Rahman sir for giving me the break. After the song became such a hit I have
been offered to judge various reality shows in south and have also bagged
few projects down there.

The singer is hopeful that 2010 will help him bag plum projects in the
industry. I am hoping to bag good solo projects in the year, adds Prakash.

Today, 16 March 2010 at 1845 hrs my mentor, the 2 time Oscar and Grammy
award winner, Padmashri A.R.Rahman launched the audio of the Malayalam film
titled, Nayakan. It was a beginning that frankly I never dreamt of.
A.R.Rahman graciously accepted my request to handover the first copy of the
music cd, squeezing in time from his packed schedule. I’m ever greatful to
A.R.Rahman sir for inspiring and guiding me all through my career of music.
This launch means a lot to our entire team who has worked hard for the
album, the musicians, singers, recordists, engineers, studio facilitators,
producer and a visionary director.

The music and the background score for the film has been designed with a
very raw and rustic soundscape. Lolalamay, a soft number rendered by Preeti
Pillai is already scaling the music charts, and currently is the most
requested song on music channels. The other songs on the album, especially
the one sung by Indrajith is gaining popularity, and should work well for
him after the film releases.

An art and action film, it stars Indrajith in the lead and is directed by
Lijo Jose Pellissery. The music and original background score is scored by
Prashant Pillai. The album features 7 songs which features debutant Preeti
Pillai, the films lead Indrajith, and Renjini Jose. The audio is out on
Manorama Music. Grab a copy of the cd today.

Re: [arr] Re: Currently, rank order these ARR albums.

2010-03-17 Thread Ram Motipally
Alright guys, having seen so many responses, I also had to pool in my
thoughts. I have also tried to give one highlight about each album from my
perspective.

1) Delhi 6 - Excellent spread of variety. Arziyan is so soulful, only
bettered by Kwaja ji !
2) Jodha Akbar - brillant fusion of contemporary sound with old world tunes.
Khwaja ji is the most devotional song I have ever heard.
3) Slumdog Millionaire - given the movie context, amazing work. Dreams on
fire still rings in my head.
4) VTV - Brilliantly romantic !
5) Jaane Tu - Brilliantly romantic again !
6) Ghajini - Very contemporary sound. Kaise mujhe still pricks ones heart
with the love pain.
7) Couple's Retreat - ARRs first fusion for a Hollywood mainstream movie.
Kuru Kuru leaves a lasting impression
8) Yuvvraaj - Very different and grows on you only after a while, not our
bosses staple fare
9) Blue - something missing, never stuck me despite multiple attempts...gave
up finally.
10) Ada - total damp squib for me...sorry to the fans of this one
