[arr] Rahman is a Yogi:Rajinkanth
The Music Launch ofEndhiran, a movie touted to be one of the most ambitious Indian films yet, took place at Kuala Lumpar. The venue was jam-packed, and understandingly so! The presence of Super Star Rajinikanth, double-Oscar winner A.R. Rahman, Former Miss World Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and popular filmmaker Shankar, under one roof, is a once in a life-time occurrence. The Endhiran music CD was released by the movie's producer Kalanidhi Maran, M.D. of Sun Pictures. Everyone was given an opportunity to share with the eager and enthused audience their experience making the film. But the speech that was most longed for came last! When Rajinikanth ascended the stage, the auditorium exploded in applause and one could almost touch the anticipation and excitement that spread through the hall. “When I was going to sign on Sivaji, I asked Kamal (Haasan) what kind of a maker Shankar was. He told me, he is a very intelligent man, but a very demanding man as well. And now, before Sun Pictures came on board, I told Mr. Kalanidhi Maran that Shankar is a like a wild, race horse – he wild surely get to the destination, but we must hang-on tight, to keep up with him,” Rajni said of Shankar. Adding that the director was a true visionary and would won day direct a fabulous Hollywood movie. Talking about A.R. Rahman, he said, “Spiritual books tell us that there are three important aspects that differentiate a normal man and a yogi. A true yogi has no ego. He is someone who follows the path of love. And above all he surrenders himself unto God, by putting Him before all else – success, power, money. Considering these things, ARR is a yogi. He has all these three qualities that spiritual gurus say make a yogi. He's the best proof that you don't have to go to the Himalayas to find yogis!” Rajni went on to say that Aishwarya Rai is no ordinary girl. She combines beauty and brains. “She is the most beautiful Miss World of our times. Even in a scene in the movie where she wore hardly any make-up, she looked stunning! She's the kind of woman, who is charming in every way,” he added.Coming to the unconditional affection his fans have for him, Rajni was humble in saying they treat him like a baby. “Parents dress up their child in fancy clothes, and rejoice when they see that child sing and dance. Similarly, you all dress me up in different get-ups, make me look younger, ask me to dance and sing, and praise and applaud me when I do that. It's all your doing. I do nothing,” he quipped. Wrapping up him speech, like the true philosopher and spiritualist he is, the star insisted the happiness and success are not permanent. “Sometimes you will have to come down before you achieve something that will take you to the top. If you succeed once and think, that you're successful, you will be in for a rude shock. Ups and downs in life, are inevitable. Learn to accept both and move,” he said and returned to his seat, amidst resounding applause. http://hindi.galatta.com/entertainment/hindi/livewire/id/Rahman_is_a_Yogi_Rajinkanth_Endhiran_Music_Release_40816.html

Re: [arr] Endhiran - Initial Reactions - Mixed Feelings
Guys, ARR has done so many genre of music, if you want melody there are huge collections in his whole set of composition, classic, hindustani, fusion, rap etc etc. There are albums which contains mixture of these genre of music, some having same genre, sangamam is purely classical, boys, enthiran are purely western, sivaji mixture of both... so depending on what director asks arr delivers them, so dont compare music of one album with another, that doesn't make sense. If songs are like sivaji then people would say songs are same like sivaji, nothing new, if it is not like sivaji we say i expected something like sivaji All I would say for those who doesn't like enthiran, take a break go and listen arr's old albums and hear enthiran, you will feel the difference. Still you are not satisfied, go and hear other music director's music, this will really help. And sorry if I offended anyone with my initial mail, once again I apologize. And thanks for such beautiful replies. :) I expected and really missed some lines of criticisms. ;) Ok, I told that it was solely my personal opinion in that mail. So, I don't even expect if no one agrees with me here too. What I was going to say is about my music palette. Ok. I can't understand the nuances of any music. I can't identify any raga of any musical piece. But, I listen to them so carefully because I don't want to miss even a single faint sound any artist or recording artist adds in the track. I hear pure classical music (Carnatic, Hindustani, Western Classical etc). I was totally in love with the songs in my mother tongue Malayalam (not so as of now!). In semi-classical music, I am not ashamed that I take pride in saying that I have heard most of the best ones in Malayalam, and some in Tamil and Telugu. I hear Tamil film songs by Harris, Yuvan and many other composers, especially who are from KM school.:) Telugu, I know and hear some catchy numbers. Have tried all Mickey J Meyer tracks. But couldn't continue following them religiously. Kannada was foreign to me till I reached Bangalore(Raghu Dixit, Mano Murthy, Guru Kiran etc are superstars!). Bollywood mass music also I hear for 2-3 times and know that it's in templates and leave them out of my hearing list, but some still are very good..like Amit Trivedi, V-S, SEL, Pritam (his original melodies are good sometimes!) etc are also some tracks I hear. Then if I stumble upon Punjabi, Rajasthani, Manipuri etc I hear them too. Then because of the high prevalence of English music channels and many original fans (and also the so-called-fans!) of the same around me, I hear English tracks ranging from Rock to Pop to Country to Blues to Jazz to Reggae to Rap to whatever; it doesn't matter to me. Another dimension is the film Soundtracks or the OSTs. If I hear any piece, I get it from IMDB or else, I get them from net by searching in the net. If I understand that it's not English and if there is no info on soundtracks (now many sites maintain though! still some obscure movies are hard to find!), I hear it may be 10-20 times and get a word or a phrase and search them in the net and finally I'll get them. There are lot of tidbits info too I get with them, which makes me realize that World music and movies are far more enriching and brilliant than the normal English stuff. Ok, again that's my opinion. Latin American Music also is another area of exploration. Then I hear completely Electronica, Techno, Trance etc So, 1. This is all what I hear in MUSIC. :) 2. I understand only Malayalam, Tamil (not so completely!), Hindi and English. :) 3. And which track I like and not like, no one will know. It remains to myself. :) So, in simple words, I hear some intelligent fusion of the different genres and elements mentioned in what's mentioned above, coming together when ARR does many tracks. I can trace them from the beginning of his film music career (but dont' ask me, it's a sub-conscious process!!). So, personally when I see him collaborate with many other artists, I wholeheartedly wait for the product and mainly I want to see what are they adding to ARR's music. And when I hear them as I said above, if I like them or not, that info will stay with me and me only. :) If I sounded like boasting about myself (even I feel so now after reading it once!), I can only request you all to consider this a clarification. And I am still exploring all these interesting genres and ranges of music.. :) Sorry for this long mail (Initial mail was better I guess!!)take care you all. The venue was jam-packed, and understandingly so! The presence of Super Star Rajinikanth, double-Oscar winner A.R. The Endhiran music CD was released by the movie's producer Kalanidhi Maran, M.D. of Sun Pictures. Everyone was given an opportunity to share with the eager and enthused audience their experience making the film. But the speech that was most longed for came last! When Rajinikanth ascended the stage, the auditorium exploded in applause and one could almost touch the anticipation and excitement that spread through the hall. âWhen I was going to sign on Sivaji, I asked Kamal (Haasan) what kind of a maker Shankar was. He told me, he is a very intelligent man, but a very demanding man as well. And now, before Sun Pictures came on board, I told Mr. Kalanidhi Maran that Shankar is a like a wild, race horse â he wild surely get to the destination, but we must hang-on tight, to keep up with him,â Rajni said of Shankar. Adding that the director was a true visionary and would won day direct a fabulous Hollywood movie. Talking about A.R. Rahman, he said, âSpiritual books tell us that there are three important aspects that differentiate a normal man and a yogi. A true yogi has no ego. He is someone who follows the path of love. And above all he surrenders himself unto God, by putting Him before all else â success, power, money. Considering these things, ARR is a yogi. He has all these three qualities that spiritual gurus say make a yogi. He's the best proof that you don't have to go to the Himalayas to find yogis!â Rajni went on to say that Aishwarya Rai is no ordinary girl. She combines beauty and brains. âShe is the most beautiful Miss World of our times. Even in a scene in the movie where she wore hardly any make-up, she looked stunning! She's the kind of woman, who is charming in every way,â he added.Coming to the unconditional affection his fans have for him, Rajni was humble in saying they treat him like a baby. âParents dress up their child in fancy clothes, and rejoice when they see that child sing and dance. Similarly, you all dress me up in different get-ups, make me look younger, ask me to dance and sing, and praise and applaud me when I do that. It's all your doing. I do nothing,â he quipped. Wrapping up him speech, like the true philosopher and spiritualist he is, the star insisted the happiness and success are not permanent. âSometimes you will have to come down before you achieve something that will take you to the top. If you succeed once and think, that you're successful, you will be in for a rude shock. Ups and downs in life, are inevitable. I do agree with you that the robo sounds are outdated and cheesy, but please try to not get hung up on the negatives and let those negatives block your overall listening experience and appreciation for what is brilliant in this album. I too got turned off by the outdated robo 80s sounds at first, but as I keep listening, I am finding more and more things about the album I like, esp. in 4 songs, and even the other 3 has some bright moments. I think Rahman has worked hard on this album and do not assume that he's lacking time. I think he puts his all into every project. I think it's very difficult to compose for a movie like this...keeping both Shankar and Rajinikant in mind, plus the robo factor! Apart from the robo sounds, I don't think anyone else could have composed better music for a film of this type. Again, there are things in this album I like and things that I don't like. I am not letting the things I don't like ruin my enjoyment of things that I do like, and for me, the things that I like are outweighing the things I don't like. --- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, sriramvr_in sriramvr...@... wrote: definitely this is no where in the leagues of previous ARR-Rajini combos. [arr] My notes on enthiran
Hello all, I have not written a review of any album so far in this group in the last 8 odd years of being around. I think its been that long...what with so many good reviewers around such as Chord etc, we are well balanced. I just thought this time i would attempt to sort of share some notes on enthiran. Enthiran did not require any brilliance in actual composition, the whole sound track needed lot of energy and some out of the world programming and mixing expertise. The concept of the sound track of enthiran suits all gizmos and toys that today almost all good composers have or can gain access to. It is the balance of what to use, how much to use to strike a trade-off between noise and music. This trade-off is seen in its absolute best in the first track of the CD. I am great fan of electronica - house, techno, beach house, down tempo and lounge music produced by lables such as Ministry of sound, Hed Kandi and few select DJ/programmers such as Armin Van Burren, Ferry Corsten, ATB, Moby to name a few. What these guys ensure is that the overall feel of the song, the production values are so damn rich that you feel that extra cash that you spend on your expensive CD system is well spent. They many not always produce melody, but the rhythm, the bass, the ambient pads, synths used are chosen and placed with such perfection that a rather simple 4x4 beat track sounds awesome. Rahman has a team that achieves and exceeds the standards set by such international artists. However, in the context of film songs such brilliance are often interrupted by the demands of the song, situation and directors brief. And i think striking a balance is very tough given so many strings pulling. If you remove the strings, Rahman's music becomes more free flowing and thats why Vande Mataram and his latest god level tracks in Nokia Connections album are talked about. Now, if you listen to puthiya manitha, the first track in enthiran disc - the samples used, the structuring of the song, the reverb and the overall usage of the stereo soundscape has come out so well that it is an absolute satisfaction. The dept of the kick (beat), the open and closed HiHats, the rising and falling synths are right there where the best of the music producers operate. I mean when i heard it for the first time and after the Khatija's lines are over i felt ..It would be great if he introduces a layer of soft kicks with prominent highs and sort of make the track flow into the mainline. And it happened and happened so well. This is strikingly brilliant. It feels rich. Same is the case with Khilimanjaro track. The taiko drums sink deep and uses all the stereo landscape such an instrument needs. Taiko drums have a very loud character to it. Once you introduce it in a song, you must be careful not to under utilise it because energy levels in the song will drop so badly that you would start to loose interest. Over usage would be very irritating. Khilimanjaro is a fairly simple track and has a of space to breath. This makes it very catchy and to top it, the production values are awesome. The problem comes in the other track - Irumbile oru idhayam. This is a very sad and average track. It seems to be put in a hurry. Very ordinary. When i heard it first i felt the track is going to take off in an another level when Kash n krisshy start their lines, those vocals sounded so classy, so global and so trance. But then the song remained the same with some loose lyrics. Not done, this is the weakest track. Infact, Trance has never been Rahman's forte. That track - Kellamal Kayile from Azhagiya Tamil Magan was very sad too. It had a template beat and fell flat in the first 60 second. Infact, i don't like Fanaa from Yuva either. Its very jarring. Going by the standard set in Puthiya manitha, irumbile oru idhyam should have sounded something like 9PM by ATB or check out Ferry corsten's latest release called Twice in a Blue moon. I am comparing for a reasonRahman need not produce flat tracks like this. Chitti Dance showcase is playing with toys and super interesting and fun to listen to.Perhaps even better fun to watch the video. But thats it. Rest of the tracks are ok. Good, for a change Yogi B has been used instead of Blaaze. He is good, but Yogi B gives a good break from Blaaze. However, what is satisfing with Enthiran is it 'sounds good' and achives its purpose. There is no great melody, just the overall feel of the disc is very positive and one does not go through dips and rises. More than Rahman, i congratulate K.J. Singh and Deepak P.A for setting a standard of production values. We have come a long way from the trash sounding BLUE to some awesome sounding VTV, Puli and Enthiran. Skipping Raavan(an)...i don't know whats wrong what that album...i have forgotten it! And belive me guys when i say this...Enthiran NEEDS and CD. You loose the maximum when you convert in MP3. The loss is

Any way guys 'this is my taste'. After a long time am crazy about an arr soundtrack Stylish songs i felt... Iam addicted to these songs specially irumbile oru idhayam ,kaadhal anukkal and kilimanjaro This was iam expecting from arr. After VTV enthiran is growing inside me uncontrollable. Mixed feelings.love some thingsdidn't like other things. 3-4 songs are outstanding.rest seem kind of filler, though bright in spots. Inconsistent, hodge podgy and too noisy in places, though bold and fit for a Rajini movie. Very massy and entertaining with a lot of classy elements too. Didn't like the retro 80s electronica sounds..way too cheesy...Rahman could have used more progressive, contemporary electro sounds and sound effects (except for the first song which did sound very contemporary and progressive!) Oh, and I also could not catch onto melodies, though they are therehard to remember and hum melodies, unlike what we heard in Sivaji along the lines of Sahara. Will write a more detailed review once I listen to the songs at least several more times, absorb them better after several days.

No I don't know how to review an album. Iam enjoying other members reviews. On the very first hearing Kadhal anukkal and Arima impressed me very much. Other tracks are growing in my mind... This is a typical Arr album which will time to grow on... Thats why iam sure Endhiran will be a milestone ARR's career.. But i sincerely wished if i could hear kadhal anukkal or Arima on Madhusree's voice, like u i also loves her voice very much.. [arr] ENTHIRAN MUSIC REVIEW - Behindwoods.com
ENTHIRAN MUSIC REVIEW *Review by : Behindwoods.com* Music Director : A.R.Rahman Vocals : S.P.Balasubramaniam, A.R.Rahman, Khatija Rahman, Vijay Prakash, Shreya Ghosal, Kash n’ Krissy, Pradeep Vijay, Pravin Mani, Yogi B, Hariharan, Sadhana Sargam, Benny Dayal, Naresh Iyer, Javed Ali, Chinmayee, Kirthi Sagathia, Swetha Mohan, Tanvi Shah. Lyrics : Vairamuthu, Karky, Pa.Vijay Produced by Kalanidhi Maran and directed by Shankar, this very costly movie was filmed at locations around the world. It stars Rajinikanth ( as Vaseegaran and Chitti) Aiswarya Rai, Danny Dengzongpa and others. This was the last movie writer Sujatha penned dialogues for. With Sabu Cyril handling the art department and A.R.Rahman doing the music and background score for it,( not to mention the special effects and CGI) this film is being eagerly anticipated by all film buffs. * Pudhiya Manidha...* *Vocals:* S.P.Balasubramaniam, A.R.Rahman, Khatija Rahman. *Lyrics:* Vairamuthu Excitement, breathlessness and hope all find a [image: Endhiran] * *place in this song which has synthesized music weaving in and out of it all through. Almost an ode to Craig Venter, this song! The alternating low and high pitched rendering serves to add a lot of attention to the interesting lyrics. What made Vairamuthu write ‘naan naalaiya gnana oli’ and then go’en thanthai mozhi tamizh allava’ and’en karthaavukku adimai allava’? it almost negates the impersonal knowledge of the robot! Neat to listen to. * Kadhal Anukkal...* *Vocals:* Vijay Prakash, Shreya Ghosal *Lyrics:* Vairamuthu The feathery guitar notes at the start just make you wonder- -yes, Rahman’s fascination with Bilahari raga continues (remember ‘Omana Penney’ from VTV?) even here. The repeated use of ‘pa dha sa sa’; ‘ri gaa’ swaras with no gamaka give the song a nice western touch. The brisk music bit two minutes into the song that goes’sa pa ma ga ri ri ga pa ga---‘etc; is so delightful and so is the refrain’Ho baby, ho baby---‘. Sharp youthful lyrics here. Fleeting touches of Pahadi raga add to the ‘aha!’ effect. Good singing and possibly fabulous visuals! * Irumbile oru Irudhayam...* *Vocals:* A.R.Rahman, Kash n’ Krissy *Lyrics:* Karky *English Lyrics:* Kash n’ Krissy Intelligent lyrics from Karky- the way ‘neelakkannoram’ and ‘neelappallaale’ combine and the phrases ’naan ennai anaippen’ ‘theymaaname illa kadhal kondu’ are quite amusing. But the English lyrics are flat. This could be a tight dance number. By locating this song on the ‘pa’ note of 1-kattai sruti, Rahman has been able to play around with the ragas Madhyamavathi and Suddha Danyasi at the same time and still retain its western slant! And such lighthearted singing from him! This song may take its time to get on to the charts. *Chitti Dance Showcase...* *Vocals:* Pradeep Vijay, Pravin Mani, Yogi B Additional Programming by Pravin Mani A small fusion bit with vibrant guitars, wispy flute notes and calm violins and some fiery ‘konnakkol’. Let us see how the visuals do justice. *Arima Arima... * *Vocals:* Hariharan, Sadhana Sargam Additional vocals by Benny Dayal, Naresh Iyer *Lyrics:* Vairamuthu Based on the Kiravani raga, this number has some ‘spillover’ effect from Rahman’s ‘Usure Pogudhe’ from Raavanan. But a sexy use of trumpets ( sa ga sa ga---sa ga pa ma ga ri sa at the start with the bigger ‘ma’ swara adding drama), aggressive vocals from Hari balanced by sweet singing from Sadhana all make you long for the visuals. *Kilimanjaro... * *Vocals:* Javed Ali, Chinmayee Additional vocal arrangements by Clinton Cerejo *Lyrics:* Pa.Vijay Such heady use of percussive instruments here! They add a whole new touch of gaiety to the song. You can almost feel the hopping of ‘kinnikkozhi’ which the song refers to. Must be a fantasy number, this, with Shankar’s famed visual richness. A very taut use of Karaharapriya raga scale. Javed Ali’s effort deserves mention. Chinmayee sounds naughty. This song is supposed to have been filmed at the historic Macchu Picchu site in Peru. *Boom Boom Robo Da... * *Vocals:* Yogi B, Kirthi Sagathia, Swetha Mohan, Tanvi Shah Oops! Is that the raga Aboghi that has been given such a modern makeover in this song? The ‘Robo Da’ bit that goes ‘ri ri dha; ri ri dha’ and the instrumental bit’ sa ri ri ma ma ga ga ri--- ‘ half a minute into the song suggest Abogi. The phrases ‘minsara kannano’ ‘autokkaara’ are amusing! Could find favour with young ones, this song! *Verdict:* Yes, it exasperates you when you listen for the first time. But as you listen again, you realize that though Rahman gives this album a crisp metallic touch in keeping with the theme of the story, he still remains faithful to his Carnatic roots in a touching way. Watch how cleverly he varies the feel of the normal duets and ‘robo-based’ duets. The lyrics are interesting too. If the listener shakes off his conditioned thinking while listening to this album, he is in for a treat. * - **Songs to Watch out!*
[arr] Re: My notes on enthiran
Awesome, awesome review and analysis! I learned a lot! Please post here more often! You write well and I agree with your views! --- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, wiredbeats wiredbe...@... wrote: Hello all, I have not written a review of any album so far in this group in the last 8 odd years of being around. Singh and Deepak P.A for setting a standard of production

--- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, sriramvr_in sriramvr_in@ wrote: definitely this is no where in the leagues of previous ARR-Rajini combos. Everyone was given an opportunity to share with the eager and enthused audience their experience making the film. But the speech that was most longed for came last! When Rajinikanth ascended the stage, the auditorium exploded in applause and one could almost touch the anticipation and excitement that spread through the hall. “When I was going to sign on *Sivaji*, I asked Kamal (Haasan) what kind of a maker Shankar was. He has all these three qualities that spiritual gurus say make a yogi. He's the best proof that you don't have to go to the Himalayas to find yogis!”* Rajni went on to say that Aishwarya Rai is no ordinary girl. She combines beauty and brains. “She is the most beautiful Miss World of our times. Even in a scene in the movie where she wore hardly any make-up, she looked stunning! She's the kind of woman, who is charming in every way,” he added. Coming to the unconditional affection his fans have for him, Rajni was humble in saying they treat him like a baby. Learn to accept both and move,” he said and returned to his seat, amidst resounding applause. http://hindi.galatta.com/entertainment/hindi/livewire/id/Rahman_is_a_Yogi_Rajinkanth_Endhiran_Music_Release_40816.html -- All the good praise goes to the Almighty http://www.arrahman.asia

Re: [arr] ENTHIRAN MUSIC REVIEW - Behindwoods.com
Waiting for rediff IG reviews.. On 8/1/10, sathishkumar v sathishkumar...@gmail.com wrote: ENTHIRAN MUSIC REVIEW *Review by : Behindwoods.com* Music Director : A.R.Rahman Vocals : S.P.Balasubramaniam, A.R.Rahman, Khatija Rahman, Vijay Prakash, Shreya Ghosal, Kash n’ Krissy, Pradeep Vijay, Pravin Mani, Yogi B, Hariharan, Sadhana Sargam, Benny Dayal, Naresh Iyer, Javed Ali, Chinmayee, Kirthi Sagathia, Swetha Mohan, Tanvi Shah. The

Re: [arr] Re: [Non-ARR] Suggestion for earphones
the original earphone they give with ipods are easily damageable and fragile. I don't know about this one.. but It is white and it gets dirty easily. I have a few of the white earphones that come with ipod and it all turned yellow after using for a month or two. after a few more months, the rubbery part around the ear-buds started to peel off of it. Re: [arr] My notes on enthiran
You are simply awesome bro... Kudos.. loved it On 8/1/10, wiredbeats wiredbe...@yahoo.co.in wrote: Hello all, I have not written a review of any album so far in this group in the last 8 odd years of being around. Skipping Raavan(an)...i don't know whats wrong what that album...i have forgotten

I am lost so much in Endhiran that my wife is now upset with me since yesterday evening. She is irritated that I dont do anything else. I dont know what is the solution for this. Does Rahmanji have any solution for such domestic issues created because of him. Maybe he should create another song to pacify my wife. hmmm..

Re: [arr] My notes on enthiran
great review, WB, this helped me notice those minute details. Thank you :) On Sun, Aug 1, 2010 at 8:53 PM, wiredbeats wiredbe...@yahoo.co.in wrote: Hello all, I have not written a review of any album so far in this group in the last 8 odd years of being around. *More than Rahman, i congratulate K.J. Singh and Deepak P.A for setting a standard of production values. *We have come a long way from the trash sounding BLUE to some awesome sounding VTV, Puli and Enthiran. Skipping Raavan(an)...i don't know whats wrong what

Re: [arr] My notes on enthiran
WiredB, Nice, but I don't completely agree with your view that Rahman hasn't done Trance well.. except Fana, he has never done a completely Trance song.. ATM just had elements of trance in the song. i've loved all his uses so far. Who'd have thought Kannathil Muthamittal last repetition of the pallavi would have it at the end ?
