clarifications..
 
It is 
not London Philharmonic.. It is Birmingham Symphony orchestra or what ever. ARR 
yes failed while only cunducting not while writing scores...
 
Mind 
you conducting is like what you see in TV, a person holding stick and waving his 
hands. Even IR did not CONDUCT..it was John Scott who conducted the said 
symphony  composed by IR. I say "Said" here  because of the obvious 
reasons why it was not released and the critics around it...Nevertheless, it was 
a great effort form the son of our soil. Hope we here it one day and preserve it 
for generations.
 
Comming back to ARR, ARR only falterd waving his hands which stopped the 
symphony a bit...but his score sheet was perfect though. It might not have been 
a great symphony (I did not here it, but many from our group heard it..seen it 
Live and have given a first hand info), but surely it got good appriciation from 
the crowd. We have to apprciate the corouge of ARR to go to alien land and 
display his talent there in their own way. 
 
If as 
you say he is not a complete composer, then he wouldn't have got to score for 
LOTR. Critics are always there...but also see the appriciation he gets from 
equally knowledgable people. Now how do you define "completeness" is a question. 
Now if you want completeness inside a tin with open lid, then I am not a game 
for this.

  pleases everyone in this world. But to me music is not only the electronic 
  rhythm, pure orchestration is what a best composer strives for.With due 
  credits to ARR, he has orchestrated mind blowing pieces.But the amount of 
  orchestration he uses as against his usual rhythm is very meagre.Symphonies 
  are all about orchestration.As an indian,i would want ARR be known as a great 
  composer and conductor because nowadays we can see number of music directors 
  coming up with their own electronic rhythms in varied styles, but can anyone 
  of you single out a great orchestrator among them.Giving a hit song is not all 
  about music.Eventhough ARR started his carrer with a lot of orchestration, he 
  has relied more on elctronic rhythm than orchestration, which is the purest 
  form of music.I would love to see ARR as an orchestrator than an electronic 
  composer.
       Please note that I have not posted this message 
  to hurt anyone.i just found this topic to be intersting and i have just aired 
  my views.hope you all take it in the right sense. It is because that I really 
  admire ARR, I had to disagree with a few of you. Your valuable comments are

SJS, infact I feel he is amoung the few directors who think divergently in 
films. Take the films like New or Aah Aa...Leave the alledged vulgarity (much 
hyped)...see the concepts that he has taken and the way he makes film..Both the 
stories are fairy tale stories..but see the way he has 
filmed..
 
remember guys...he is the one who made ARR popular 
amoung B & C after a long haitusNew was such a 
craze

talented no doubt...people who had seen him in Vaali which never take him to be 
a just an other director.

support what Kulothungan says.
 
Take 
for example E20U15, I think ARR went by the directors taste and approval. Even 
Aha..Aaa, he okayed songs which were instantly liked by SJS, but I know ARR 
wouldn't have been entirely please with a couple of songs in that film. He 
should rather not release a song for shooting unless he was convinced by himself 
that its upto his standards. Not all directors are AG, MR or ROM. We have SJS 
who has great filmy brains and good pair of ears but not a musical taste as 
refined as the directors I have mentioned.
 
ARR, 
cannot score music like, "enge enge...Dolna", "kathakali" etc..Come on..these 
songs did not connect with the public at any level..
where 
as songs of NEW and aah..aa to an extend went up to B and C level, but still 
some of ARR's signatures were missing. What I am saying is ARR should use his 
style in these songs also.

  then abt rahman's commitment in LOR album, my personal worry abt rahman is 
  'he is always the director's musician. consider'g the fact, all directors 
  can't b a 'maniratnam, 'shankar, 'subash ghai etc.. for these people, rahman's 
  policy is 200% right regd giving the songs in their tastes, but for others, 
  rahman can't impress his music on poor audiences. i always support raja for 
  giving his own kind of music for the film's purposes & not for the 
  director's own interests. so, mostly he got success, but gained a worst name 
  against the directors r from other creators.. whether the result is right r 
  wrong, raja is the only reason ie., nearly 90% for his own decisions. so, my 
  request is rahman should change his attitude accord'g to every director's 
  musical tastes..

  must agree that today's composers are not as great as yesteryear composers.

  And i feel we must not misread Asha Bhonsle's remarks.For someone who has 
  seen the development of music, right from 1940s...definitely today's music

  would be inviting their disrespect. So, her statement is a general

  Secondly, you find Rahman greater than R.D.Burman because you are living 
  in Rahman's era. Music should be judged by quality and the timelessness 
  associated with them. Tomorrow your kids might not enjoy Rahman..as someone 
  else will be ruling in their era. does that degrade rahman's achievements.Same 
  applies to R.D.Burman also.He was a true genius no doubt.and if you think that 
  his worth can be judged only by remembering 100 films of his work, then you 
  are mistaken. you must not forget that R.D.Burman, like Rahman, was a 
  trendsetter in his own times and even now, so many of his songs are still 
  remembered. Lets give him the credit and respect. judging who is greatest is 
  very abstract. you will show me few songs which only rahman can create..and i 
  can show you some songs which only R.D.Burman could create. how can you 
  evaluate then?
  it is useless to draw such comparisions and lets give every good/great 
  composer a due place in the history of Indian Film Music.

You know what even my father was asking me whether ARR lost his stuff as
some thing is reported failed. He has read "Dinakaran" and found the news I
guess.

See how ill informed media spoil the reputation of a world class genius.
This is a height of mediocre reporting.

If such a opinion can happen to father of a Loyal fan of ARR, imagine the
general public. Anti ARR group will be having their party by now celebrating
that some thing of ARR has failedGod let these people know in first
place what are they thinking is not what they are made to understand by
these cheap dailies.

Markandeya...is what it is..? In fact new items were published in print 
media how this song became such a popular one among masses that  it forced 
SJS to reshoot this song and go for a censor clearance and get into trouble. I 
do not like that song that much as I feel Nithyashree shouts more that what is 
expected in that song.

What GF music is for what GF as film has evolved. Why not compare Thotti
Jaya and GF and see who scores.
I can sense and make an idea about the story of GF with the songs
itself..Now tell me can you guess the story of VV with the songs alone.

As ROM said in one of the interview "Rahman, I do not want music vedios."
ARR doen't give songs for music vedios...his music are more like inseperable
part of films. Hope my plain explanation helped you hear GF and VV with two
different ears..

Now the question is...Did M Dhonna meddle around with any of ARR
composition. I throught what I listed to from the MP3 earlier was itself
10/10 and if the newer versions of the same song are beautified by MD and
not ARR then I will be  dissapointed..I wanted a pure ARR album to listen
not some thing remixed by other with out ARR's supervison.

Gopal or other can you plese clarify.?

If what you say is true and U indeed come from such a great family then I
guess, it's a really precious mail from you to the group. I guess, I have
read references about Patiyala Gharana in some article in India today long
back. Though I do not follow Hundustani music very much, nevertheless I love
classical music and I listen to carnatic music a lot. 

The reason I write this mail is to ask Vijay/Rano and others here to put
across to ARR about your mail so that if he finds time he can read your mail
and might even feel to reply to you personally.

That reminds me "samba samba  oh lamba oh re" song...

I think the beats and the rhythm pattern in that song was way ahead...You
can see some diluted versions of that rhythms now a days in Hindi and Tamil
songsIncidentally, that was the only song I liked in that album before
making an opinion on the ever green "malargale..malargale"I mean that
beat and rhythm took me to a completely different place. When I saw Prabhu
Deva's Choreography for that song...God...except for his cranky dress, every
thing was perfect in that song...Great individual dance. PD is a master of
timings.

day. I feel that the rhythm of couple of songs is totally pleasant. 
That compels me to play the song again and again. Also, whenever I cant 
sleep due to work pressure, I listen to Vennela Vennela..from Kadhal 
Desam.

Unnecessary point of view in defence of ARR...Lets defend ARR with ARR
alone...

Just simple..ask any one to replace the lyrics of the old song with the
lyrics of the alledged ARR song and ask them to sing...you
cannot...same..."enna vilai azhage...sonna vilaikku vanga varuven" match
roughly with "thangapadhakkathin mele...oru muththu padhiththadhu pole" only
after that both the songs shoot of tangently...if that is a copy of that
gentleman then..I guess...you should not argue further...as everyone is
entitled for their opinion and being an elder...I guess we cannot change
their opinion that easily.

"Sowmkkiyama"
If it is then it should be either "orunaalpodhumaaa" or "sow kiya
maaa"...but both are not..not even a resemblance in the first word...

Poor ARR...who ever wants throws a stone but this tree just bears fruits and
only fruits...

Rehash is the worng word to use. Only HJ does rehash of old ARR songs. 
I think ARR rather works by inspiration. Well one old song "oru naal 
pothumaa" has inspired the "sowkiyamma" song from Sangamam.I think ARR 
is rather paying tribute/homage to past tamil song glories than rehash 
them. When  u see a rehash as with HJ and Anu Malik (the King  of 
copycats!). u will know it is one.

Guys,

It's a good culture to promote good music from anywhere and as some thing
quite natural to us we ARR fans do support good music.

I did purchase a CD of this composition on the very first day and listened
to it more than a couple of times. Its good and people who know some thing
about WCM and Oratorio will enjoy. If they are good Tamil literature readers
they can understand this album very well.

When I talk in favor of this album here, I should also mention the dark side
this album is being surrounded with.

There is a big controversy and a blame game going on with the promotion and
creation of the album and few figures also point towards IR. You can search
internet for some of the details regarding this album. There is a big lesson
we need to learn from the way this album was financed and produced. The
lesson is if some one wants to produce an album, do it with your own money
or with proper sponsors...DO NOT ASK FOR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION.

sugam" follow similar meter and almost same swaras...and both the songs are for 
a somantic night- bed situation where hero and heroine

song to say that its been even remotely inspired by that Vikram's song...but the 
way the two genius have envisioned the situation and generated tune and song 
structures speaks volumes about their capabilities...

extend..same cannot be said about this melodiaic beauty by ARRmany of his 
fans who joined ARR band wagon have not relished this great song..I guess...God

heart also wishes somehow IR should also be part of this project because as on 
date he is undisputed master in Western classical music from India is 
concerned  ...lets make no mistake...people who rigorously follow IRs BGM 
will agree for what I say...
 
Even 
though it is not a forum to discuss IR here, we as a level headed fans should be 
able to appreciate good music from whom ever/wherever it is.

Hi Fan,

I am happy that more fans from other linguistic background across India
wanting to listen ARR's Tamil composition. Though there are more gems in
Tamil than in Hindi, some of ARR's compositions in Tamil can be very much
enjoyed only when people listening to it know the background of the film,
the theme, the situation and all.

I have seen many here say that Iruvar is probably ARR's best ever and what
not. True...but Non Tamil fans especially those NI fans and
Pakistani/Bangladeshi/ Sinhalese will be able to not only enjoy but also get
astonished by ARR's brilliance only if they know about the real story behind
Iruval and its inspirational incidence.

Iruvar is a film based on the two political rivals of Tamil Nadu starting
from their association in early 1930's..So when we listen to songs in Iruvar
we need to keep in mind about what sort a person is these protagonist are.
The one enacted by Mohanlal is the character of MGR who was the first super
star of Tamil and still the undisputed God of millions of his Fans..He is no
more though..He was a chief minister of TN for about 9 years..So the songs
composed by ARR on MohanLal (the actor who acted as MGR) has many flavors of
the MGR songs which people could identify with..But Brilliance of ARR would
only give original tunes and even though the tunes were MGR like none was a
even 5% copied one. That is why many here could say that Iruvar is ARR's
best. Also the film spans some 4 decades and even talks about Jayalalitha
and her influence on MGR (Ashwarya plays that part...Hello Mr,.
Ethirlatchi)..so each song will convey to you the ambience of the film..the
period setting..etc..

Narumugai ye1940..when Songs were purely carnatic based with King Queeen
stories..
Venni la...vennila...1950..when the influence of Jazz and Hindi music was
quite prevalent..
Also Pookkodiyin Punnagai...Late 50s when Lite music was slowly becoming
popular with MS. Viswanathan Music (one of the greatest MDs of Tamil) and P
Suseela's voice (Incidently the female voice in that song was that of a
relative of P Suseela...the song was exactly like the one this great singer
would have sung..ARR's touch..brilliance)..
Then Aayirathil Naan oruvan..1960's when MGR was getting the Super Star
Status...generally 10s of MGR songs of this period would be only of this
type...

Then early late 60 and early 70s...infuence of Rock, Jazz type..disco
music..in Hello Mr. Ethirlatchi...The period when Jayalaltha Made a debut
and influenced MGR in his personal and as well as political life...

In all the composition ARR left his mark...even though all the songs had the
stamp pf the period..the ambience...it also had ARR in it.the sound the
unique..signature..it sounded classic as well as modern..

That is Iruvar from Mani - ARR combo...

Well if we know these background about the film and much more inside story
and political rhetoricwe can only get astonished by ARR's genius again
and again...

Lets leave IR's comment there where it is said and move on. This is not the
first time he says this popcorn anology. I guess, it was during the media
interview in Bangalore during the release of one of his Kannada films music
he made this peculiar popcorn anology. He is continuing that from there on.
He as one of  the supreme composers of all time is entitled to have in own
opinion and I (we) respect that. It is quite obvious that the pop corn
packet that he is referring to contain more from ARR's factory, according to
his assumed inner belief, but what he should also not forget that his two
sons and one daughter have also supplied only pop corns and nothing else all
these days to that packet. Hope he is also referring to them.

But , we all know that ARR has not only supplied pop corn (as opined by IR)
but also has sowed a big big paddy field which the future generation is
going to harvest for long. U can already see many of his contemporaries
have entered that paddy field, in the cover of dark and have harvested some
bits and pieces.

Lets leave it at that. I enjoyed the show and hope IR makes more such
shows

Did you all see one thing...Even ARR here has set a trend in these kind of
huge shows with high preproduction cost on Lights and decorations, which
even some one as high as IR is following.? This is called trend setting -
setting HIS OWN PATH. That's ARR for us.

Ilayaraja, he was interacting with the audiences in a friendly manner.

Speaking about his compositions, he said: "In a music, both the tunes
and the lyrics should complement perfectly. As in the case of a song:
Sundari kannal oru sedhi (Dalapathy), Vaali has written lyrics which
match my compositions appropriately in the exact range and wavelength."

Then he also said: "Today, there are songs which neither match the
tune nor the lyrics, but that is somewhat acceptable. They fall in the
category of film songs, which is different. Just like Food and Popcorn."

"Why Popcorn SELLS more is a separate debate which we will not discuss
now."

There may be nothing wrong with what he said, but it is a DIRECT
comment towards some of the best-sellers in the music industry today.
Whom or WHAT EXACTLY did he have in mind? Is A. R. Rahman or his TYPE
OF MUSIC a possibility that he targeted...??

Titan wanted it in that way because it is their signature tune...simple..Had
some other MD, even naushad been assigned to compose the jingles even then
he had to use Mozart's symphony. The logic is straight forward.

What are you trying to instigate..??? Lifted???

Do you know the history??? Reason Yes it is ofcource a Mozart Symphony
and Titan owns it as its signature tune for its adds..

ARR cannot change it and give his own symphony...He can write symphonies but
Titan in this case will not use it...so ARR as a jingle composer had to
improvise of Mozart Symphony because it is TITAN WHICH WANTED IN THAT WAY.

Prakash this is not an attempt to pin point the mistake.Pardon me if I 
have hurt your feelingsThis whole album is one of my favorites and I rate 
this one among the Top Ten of ARR..This album is quite an underrecognised 
Gem.  I thought of correcting it and putting right words because, the whole 
album is one of the best examples of the powers of ARR-VM combo. People who are 
well informed in Tamil can see the beauty of the poem that VM has given 
here..Not only this song, "Teendai", "thathi Aadudhe", "Thirakkadha" etc are 
Lyrical marvels.
 
I 
again urge those ARR fans who have not yet realised the beauty of ESK to go back 
to this album and give a try again. You will realise what magic ARR has done 
with this album, especially these four songs.

concerts, I think it was a conscious decision to axe the slowersongs in

that album as not worth a listen when it released..

Duel as BGM in the teleserial MANAIVI telecasted in Sun TV.

Timings : 10 PM IST Monday-Friday

That's the exact question I am asking in the other way...if he has done any
thing then it is blasphemousthat's it...And I feel, Sham rang doo and
bangri Morari songs were touched by him, because, I feel Somewhere ARR's
layers are erased...Hey come on...some places you can actually feel a
different istrument playing in your mind where as you do not hear like that
in your ears...IF ARR has wantedly restrained himself from using certain
things in the song keeping in mind the context of the film then I can
understandbut if MD had done some thing in the songs as once he said in
the interview then it's a big crime..

Arijit, you are unnecessaryly getting angry with me..I can understand as I
am also a ARR fan...but want I wanted to find out was is there any
intervention from MD's end, which should not have been.

I have not any thing in music other than sincerely buying originals of ARR
with out fail. I said that you don't know me as a long time member of this
group probably. I do not claim any superiority over you in terms of
dedication ot ARR...I know almost everybody in this group is equally crazy
about ARR (ofcourse there are spys from other group like our beloved:)))

The composition is worth a NA no doubt...but my opinion is like this..having
known ARR right from the first time I head "Chinna Chinna Aasai" on August
15th 1992 over DD oliyum Oliyum, I feel that ARR wouldn't have just stopped
with this BGM...I mean..I feel..that his could have been even better..

Okay I wrote my mail when I listened to the tracks for the first time. By
the time I am writing this mail I have already listened to it 5 times and
yes, I am hooked to itnot that I did not realize the brilliance in the
composition in the first time itself, but now I can visualize how DM would
have constructed Varnasi and how these songs would have suited the sun set
at the banks of the Ganges..

But I still stand by what I have doubted.if Mi Dh had done even a
slightest modification with ARR's original..I will be the most disappointed
person in the world...I want to hear Water for ARR and ARR only...I don't

the portions of music (read BGM) which sounded to synthesized and he added
all acoustic instrument in those place...

have stopped with giving this minimal BGM to some extraordinary tunes..
