thnx mohan. atlast u surprised with this rarity. i should not leave

vdeos are not allowing members to post them independently for copyrights issue
for its for some dollars & like ur stand, i also prefer to see chinmayee to win
filmfare award for munbe vaa in SOK.. when north indian mds could not
give more offers to south indian singers, why should these MDs again n again
call them when we have our own best talents. becuz of this our singers lose
awards & due credits. in the end only north indian singers take
awards/credits both on behalf of hindi & regionals. thats why a dig on
certain ARR singers nothing more when felt disappointed about these talents
who are not taken for consideration anyone could post details about
parsuram-one man army hindi songs & singers not the audio files but trax

this situation now...? who has to be advised now ? if there is something not
wrong abt a song mean why that song had to be dragged in & pple see its
negative part than +ve part... after all we could talk this only in rehman
group rehman himself feels other way abt such views and i end this
topic with a BIG SORRY

Vinod Raju <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Karthik/Sarathy and others,

I, as most Keralites, have lived with this allegation of Ottagathai-
Kuyiline connection, ever since Gentleman hit the stores. It does
sound similar in the opening lines from "ottagathai" to "Pottukkaari",
but I really cant call this a copy like the enormous songs listed in
Karthik's site are (same applies to the Telugu song connection too).

And if you still call this a copy, then that opens a Pandora's box,
and 1000s of songs by every MD in India also would have to find a
place in itwofs. (A certain Tamil MD who came as a "lightning" should
find all his songs listed in itwofs against another ARR song, if thats
the case) ;-)

Anyway, What goes into itwofs or not is completely Karthik's
discretion, and I dont think anybody has any right to say anything or
question Karthik on that.

Also, Telugu version of Gentleman released long time back
and "Kontegadni Kattuko" was a smash hit in AP as in other parts of
India too. I just cant understand how nobody would miss this "copy"
all these years. (especially since the Telugu album is said to be a
super hit album of early 90s - it sold 8 lakh cassettes as per a
website. Probably more than Gentleman sold in AP. So, no obscure song
this!)

This also reminds me of another old allegation that "Varayo Thozhi /
Kehne ko Dadi" resembling "O mere Sona Re".
ARR himself had answered this in his Filmfare interview in Aug 99.
(pasting it below)

Q: Have you ever lifted a tune?
ARR: "Not intentionally. But there was some strings of melody in a
song of Jeans which I was told sounded much like Mere sona re (Teesri
Manzil). I don't know how it happened,it was inadvertent...maybe
R.D.Burman's tune was lingering somewhere at the back of my mind".

And to end this rather large mail, please allow me to quote what
Karthik himself posted in Dec 05 in this very same group.

"And ultimately, its only your belief that, as a person, Rahman is
honest, that is being questioned."

And that should explain the reaction and angst of Sarathy and the
1000s of other silent members of this group.

Hope we can end this topic and move on to discuss better things in
this group.
Any idea when ATM is releasing? Anybody? :-)

Thanks and regards,
Vinod

[arr] ARR : I wont say its my fault (replies for inspirations)

2007-09-11 Thread Sarathy S

Arr replies for special audiences in recent interview "walk the talk for
ndtv" : after 16:45 he clearly puts his view... [pple are so much into the
stuff & they consume that so much, the moment u use the same instrument or even
same kinda phrasing.. they feel "O i got it... it sounds like that"
..they so sensitive to sounds " i wont say its my fault..." its the
sensitiveness problem.. explains : if we use that trend they dont even
think & they wont even see something abt melody he give is different & takes
time for pple to understand sounds...] which means Arr sticks to that point
pple dont realise what he give is entirely different in creative aspect.."
but audiences get into wrong scrutiny coming to conclusions O it sounds
like that." & not coming forward to appreciate the entire aspect of
creativeness.

audiences lack to realise the whole creativity around which sounds given /
instruments used are totally different)

Ottagathai copied from "Kuyiline" is a very popular allegation in

convinced about the 'copy' allegation, though the first line of
Ottagathai does have some similarity to Kuyiline.

song, 'Eddem Ante Teddam Antav', from the album 'Chik pak chik bam',
with music by Raj Koti, seems to be the source of inspiration for
Rahman's superhit Gentleman song, 'Ottakatha Kattikko'. The first 2
lines' flow, that is, nothing more. And, considerably spruced up in
Rahman style, of course! I recall reading Rahman's apprenticeship as
an arranger for other composers like Ilayaraja, Ousepachan and Raj
Koti, so a connection cannot be ruled out as a coincidence. Plus,
I'm not getting into a guessing game which points to Rahman
composing this tune originally for Raj Koti since that's merely a
conjecture! Thanks to Amith Chandran and Bhagavathi Mohan for the
info! The full Telugu song is available in CoolToad, here.

K.L. Sreeram is busy making a mark in the field of playback singing. He dabbles
in all things musical

Photo Vipin Chandran

Versatile artiste K.L. Sreeram has made a mark as composer, singer and
innovative musician

Internationally reputed violinist Vanessa-Mae’s album ‘Choreography’ celebrates
dance rhythms from around the world. Original pieces were created by renowned
music directors, including A.R. Rahman. That piece had a strong Indian fla vour
and more significantly a Malayali touch to it. The vocal arrangements were
conducted by Palakkad K.L. Sreeram, who has made a mark as composer, singer and
innovative musician.

“The recording took place sometime early 2004 at Rahman’s studio in Chennai. He
was in London then and we played according to his instructions from there. I
also sang some classical ‘alaaps’ in a few basic ragas. It is an
instrumental-fusion album. The final mixing was done in the United Kingdom. The
album was released in September that year,” recalls Sreeram, who got his big
musical break through Rahman.

Getting into the Rahman stable was by chance. He had accompanied his wife Baby,
a Carnatic vocalist, who was to sing a complex variation of a Madyamavathi
piece. Sitting in the console room, Sreeram was biting his nails in
exasperation. He could see Baby struggling to decipher Rahman’s instructions.
Unable to stand the stress any longer, he asked if he could help Baby with the
song. Sreeram’s detailed demonstration ended in energised singing.
‘Taj Mahal’

What Sreeram did not realise was that the microphone was on all the time.
Rahman, impressed by Sreeram’s singing, went on to punch the whole song. A week
later Sreeram got a call from Rahman for his first film song, ‘Tirupaachi
arivaala…’ in ‘Taj Mahal.’

A Calicut University Kalaprathibha, Sreeram has always been immersed in music.
He played the flute and mridangam for concerts and other music programmes, did
the ‘nattuvangam’ and vocals for Bharatanatyam, was a guest artiste at
Kalamandalam, and composed ‘adavus’ and ‘jathis’ for dance. And then he moved
from Palakkad to Chennai. He suddenly felt ‘unemployed.’

“I was frustrated at not doing anything and went in search of a job.
Fortunately, I was introduced by one of my friends to music director Rajamani.
He took me in to assist him in the re-recording of Keeravani’s film
‘Pasavalai,’ which was going on in one of the studios. For the next 10 days I
was doing what I loved most. And, I was being paid too. That was my first
experience of playing for a film.”

Sreeram’s debut song ‘Tirupaachi arivaala…’ went on to become a huge hit. Two
more popular hits from Rahman followed but it also caused a lot of heart burn.
Sreeram sang the Tamil version of the Sukhwinder Singh hit ‘Thaiya thaiya…’ in
the film ‘Uyire,’ a remake of ‘Dil Se.’

“But when the audio cassettes were released it went with Sukhwinder’s name. I
was crestfallen but decided to keep quiet about it. Corrections were made but
it was late.”

Then came the other blow. Sreeram’s song ‘Vettrikodi kattu…’ for the Rajnikant
film ‘Padayappa’ turned into a smashing hit but the credit for this song went
to Malaysia Vasudevan. “Vasu Sir was kind enough to go public and state that
the song was sung by me. Rahman was furious and called up the company making
the cassettes and asked them to make the change. When the CDs came out my name
was there.”
Peppy numbers

Sreeram has so far sung around 80 Tamil songs that include peppy numbers such
as ‘Tirunelveli halwa…’ (‘Samy’), an innovative fusion number that had just two
words ‘Love Check’ along with Sivamani’s drums from the film ‘Paathale
Paravasam,’ some fast numbers like ‘Kannamoochi attam…’ from ‘Kannamoochi
Yenada,’ and interesting duets like ‘Mundasu sooriyane…’ (‘Sandaikozhi’),
‘Urranthotathula…’ (‘Veyil’) and Ulagame nee…’ (‘Ivan’).

In Malayalam, Sreeram has composed the music for ‘Mazhamega Pravukal’ and
‘Melvilasam Shariyanu.’ “I’m not sure how the film fared but a couple of songs
have become popular. One of them by S. Janaki, ‘Kanne kanmani…’ from my first
film and a duet ‘Puzhapadum ee pattil…’ by Jayachandr

Re: [arr] Rahman's voice is fading : Ravindra Sathe ..

2007-09-10 Thread Sarathy S
These days it is not surprising, when some press or some other musician takes a
hard or soft dig on ARR. Becuz there are fans here who call themselves as Arr
fans & speak something here & work in other ways outside. I feel.., if we call
ourselves as arr fans we should not indulge in givng any kinda opinions about
rehman that give chance to anti-arr groups. Then there is no meaning to involve
ourselves in a dedicated Arr forum. Let some anti-arr persons or press or
website like itwofs who are for this speak such things on influence,
inspiration, copy, lift, loop, sample, fading, ring master etc... Rahman fans
themselves be it seniors or juniors must not indulge in these things. Even if
we come to

know we should hold silence or share privately & not like this to share in
public either in this main forum for Arr or any other website/forum for that
sake. imho that could be one way to be better fans of Rahman. This I can very
much say after my experience in some forums, I see people who run other forums
for their heros they never allowed posts from members that give little chance
even to a soft dig on their heros. From telugu copy post, i came only to
understand some guys did a team work on this. Whats the thrill in doing such
acts & really this is going to disappoint die-hard fans of rehman. It only
reflects even such members support certain views that are indirectly a soft dig
on Arr, whether here or outside this forum...

Ottagathai copied from "Kuyiline" is a very popular allegation in
Kerala since Gentleman release days. But not many people are really
convinced about the 'copy' allegation, though the first line of
Ottagathai does have some similarity to Kuyiline.

song, 'Eddem Ante Teddam Antav', from the album 'Chik pak chik bam',
with music by Raj Koti, seems to be the source of inspiration for
Rahman's superhit Gentleman song, 'Ottakatha Kattikko'. The first 2

Re: [arr] Arr...why is he not crediting Illayaraja

2007-09-09 Thread Sarathy S

hey anish from counter 8:40 note & at 8:45 he mentions Ilayaraja :-) and
when he spks about 60s & 70s mainly not much of IR at that time. End of 70s was
start of IR... & Arr had mentioned many times about IR as one of his
mentors & playing keyboards to him in his career initially before shining as
composer. Arr also invited his son-composer YSR to use his new studio. As
thulasi ram said we find hard to remember if IR mentioned anywhere about ARR on
the

context of giving credits ? like... "I am proud to see Arr one of my players
once & now reaching heights globally" :-( if anyone find any article even old
news, where IR mentions just a word about Arr, kindly post it here to make our
statements false. That does not indicate we are anit-IR. We respect all MDs, we
have many favorite songs of IRs & other MDs too. But it is between composers
when comes to acknowleding each other raise our eyebrows ? Why is this
hesitation & lack of broadmind to speak out things ? i loved Arr mainly in

this interview how he cleverly handled to speak about bollywood. Arr also
frankly states, listening to hindi only after roja days & in this interview
Rehman surprises us without using his very own word "Stuff" anywhere. he wins
in this word play game "vArththai vilaiyAttu" by not using "Stuff" &
interestingly the host, Srinivasan jain used this word (Stuff) many a time ;-)

IR.Maybe he should also credit Illayaraja evenly. Talking abt names
like visha shekar and shankar eshan loyi would have been glad if
he would have rather said something abt ilayaraja where in terms of
class..he is far apart from many composers in the 80s.

Comeon...afterall...our boss came from illayaraja school When Gangai

Re: [arr] Concerts and Compositions

2007-09-09 Thread Sarathy S

Apart from marketing facts, i believe in Arr's secret dreams to make a mark
in mainstream hollywood movies. Only these concerts led him to perform in
hollywood bowl last year which no other indian composer bagged such credit.
There was a near chance & when we read news post HW bowl concert, those
producers talking about having an ARR concert for this year's Oscar Awards
though not happened but it was in news. I donno when will it happen but could
see a brighter perspective somewhere he is going to use his magic in HW movies
one day as main composer through his first step as co-composer in the golden
age- elizabeth now. His positive side is, observes, learn & uses world music
effortlessly, he is flexible & easily moves with all western
composers/musicians whether famous or unknown. With this kinda Arr's mind set,
body language & strong influence of world music, many westerners (musicians &
composers) understand his vast music skills, willing to work with him be it in
studios or stage concerts. With all hard efforts Arr is really a god blessed
person :-)

Caran <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

What do you think about ARR giving too many concerts in the recent
past(the number has increased substantially in the current decade)? Is it
restricting his creativity in any sense? The fact remains that a lot of time is
channelised for concerts in the form of rehearsals (a coupla months or more for
a concert). Apart from the obvious advantages of performing live (monetary and
reaching more people), would it be better if he dedicates more time composing
music than merely recreating his own scores on stage?

Whats your say?_.___

  Hi all,

As I promised, I am back - with tidbits shared by Sujatha, Karthik and Raihana
on Rahmania show
(I'm writing all of these from my memory, so, pls excuse any inaccuracies)

Karthik:

"I was such a big fan of Rahman sir, I never even dreamt that i could become
a playback singer, let alone singing in Rahman sir's music. Singer Shrinivas is
a relative of one of my friends, and thru my friend i got to meet him. I really
wanted to meet him, because he is closely associated with Rahman At that
time, I thought 'i donno if i can ever meet rahman sir, It would be great to
meet someone who has closely interacted with him'!!
But, Shrinivas sir asked me if i could sing, and he asked me to give a cd with
my voice, and he passed it on to ARR... almost a year later, Shrinivas sir
called and told me that I needed to go to ARRs studio... I couldnt believe it..
it was for a harmony part... It was great!!"

"I have sung harmony for many songs, including the latest 'sana nana... ma mana
nana' bit in Adhiradi (Sivaji). Tippu, Devan, I and others used to have great
fun during the harmony recordings... Even a year after I first sang for ARR, he
used to get confused between me and Tippu, and often used to refer to me as
Tippu!!! He would want tippu to sing a part again, but would say 'Karthik,
please sing it'... and i would start off... and he woud say 'oh... i meant
KARTHIK' but pointing to TIPPU!! It was great fun"

"Even after singing so many songs as the lead singer, I still long to sing
harmonies for him...It is a whole new learning experience.. Each time I work
with him, especially for harmonies, i learn a lot...Even recently I called up
Rahman sir and asked him if there are any songs for which I could join in the
harmony..."

That's pretty much what I found really interesting about ARR, from Karthik's
interview... I will write excerpts from Sujatha's interview in my next mail...

Cheers,
Aravind

his first movie roja... rukumani rukumani song. (unless it is of period
films) & he presents it in different way some of his kutthu songs comes
with folk beat & some of it wear modern look with western beats..
vusilampatti song from gentleman / mAnA madhura ooh la la la... from minsara
kanavu / veerapAndi kOtaiyilae from thiruda thiruda / katheerikka from duet /
chinnamma chilakamma from meenaxi. the list goes on to godfather (varalaru)
to guru (maiyya maiyya song though arabic influence it also comes into kutthu
genre only).. as pawan said it is branded as item song in bollywood (missed to
mention one famous family kuththu non-arr song - kajra re - bab). v can
also count bangra type as punjabi kutthu songs & dandiya as gujrati
kutthu... what about qawwali fast beats ? :-) though in all these

Yes manaf :-) i noticed rahman quoting more about his favorites. Obviously
everyone here knew this 'walk the talk' program must have happened when rehman
was in bombay to launch jgm dvds (before Aug.15th) with those many interviews
we saw... & i meant to say ndtv releasing now only on 7th sept. to say it is
new interview & not something we missed to catch it now. Arr nicely pointed
out, about 60s & 70s is a golden era not just for kollywood or tollywood or
bollywood but everywhere in the world when considering world music too... Arr
perfectly said a big vibration in world all over during 60s-70s to get all new
music. really something to cherish & to be appreciated about those many
legends in music in every part of world who created their tunes without much
guidance from their seniors & without technology, gadgets n all they able
to create songs that are still green n liked by all & long lasting.. they
became the guiding force to next set of composers in
80s & so on & now technology took over the lead at the same time quality
of music & creativity too leading in every genre be it classical music or film
music or non-film, though there are some composers who could not come with more
creativity.

AR Rahman tells Myleene Klass of CNN about evolution of music in Indian films
Do you think the use of music in Bollywood films has become slightly more
sophisticated?
Yeah, there is a film called 'Rang De Basanti' which also was the official
entry from India for Oscars, and this film, when I was doing it, I never knew
that the music would reach so many people across the globe.
  report continued below

•'BJP is the outsider in UPA-Left marriage' more »
•UPA-Left mechanism on deal likely this week more »

The songs were lip synced, just used like a background, but it seemed to
blended well with the screenplay and the story. So I think it clearly proved
that the people are changing and they are looking forward to more sophistic and
non cliché stuff.
Was there a growing division, do you think, between films, between Indian
films that are favoured by rural audiences and urban audiences?
I think the line is becoming thinner and thinner, really, because, unlike a
couple of decades ago where people didn't know anything about the happening
outside. Now people know what it is that Hollywood and Chinese films are made
of. This influences people and so filmmakers are compelled to do stuff which is
world class.
I can see that the past six years a massive change has happened and there are
extraordinary filmmakers who are evolving.
What do you think are the qualities of a truly great composer?
One needs to transcend somebody by even if it is just one instrument theme. And
now the challenges of the composers are much more as its not just about
composing a great theme. One needs to know recording, production and how to
intertwine music with the movie.
And with Indian films it is an even greater challenge, because we need to be
like a Michael Jackson or John Williams, Hans Summer and an Indian folk
composer and put all of them together. So they expect finesse and they expect
versatility.

I got free tickets for Sonu Nigam's concert this past Saturday and

news from the concert.

The concert started with a cover version of Roobaroo from Rang De
Basanti. The cover was performed by the accompanying musicians and not
by Sonu. This version was not bad but was let down by the lead vocalist.

Sonu Nigam performed two of Rahman's compositions - Saathiya from
Saathiya and Satrangi Re. Both the performances were impeccable
singing wise. Before starting Satrangi Re, Sonu mentioned that in
spite of singing a huge number of songs in career, that this song
remains a favourite. Once the song was completed, Sonu Nigam received
a standing ovation from a few and chants of Sonu, Sonu from the crowd.

hi thnx 4 this... really njoyd this sayanora video abt rahman & other videos
well of those playback singers specially kavitha krishnamurthy who is now 4
global music. and i like to know whether A.R.RAHMAN is coming together to
work with them in any of their international projects please i mean
with kavitha's husband Shri.L..Subramaniam they r of one great musical
family. if allowed i can talk mails n mails abt d gr8 violin trios of
shris. L.Shankar, L.Subramaniam & L.Vaidyanathan & the violin duet sisters of
m.lalitha & m.nandini (their relatives). all achieved in international
levels like RAHMAN (but in classical carnatic & western fusion with many
famous western artists).. if there cud b a family of born musical geniuses
then i cud point at them... music is like their hereditary wealth for
them. i am also happy 4 kavitha-ji sang many RAHMAN SONGS (i cannot
forget her KATREY EN VASAL - RHYTHM) WONDERFUL & UNIQUE IS D
VOICE OF HERS... despite being brought up in delhi, as a south indian she
made her stamp as a successful playback singer in hindi cinema than any other
south indian female pbsingers.. not to leave hariharan & shankar
mahadevan on these lines for male categories.

LONDON, England (CNN) -- The Screening Room went to the Theatre Royal in
Drury Lane in the heart of London's West End, where a spectacular musical
version of "The Lord of The Rings" is enjoying a successful run, to meet Indian
composer A. R. Rahman, whose blend of Asian culture with rock and Western
classical styles has revolutionized the Indian film industry. And now Rahman is
about to make his mark in Hollywood.
  A. R. Rahman, interviewed by CNN's Screening Room

Virtually unknown in Europe and the U.S., Rahman has sold 200 million albums
worldwide -- more than the Beatles -- and is worshipped throughout much of
Asia, where he's known as the Mozart of Madras.
Now he has added a Hollywood film score to his vast repertoire of movie music.
Rahman explained to CNN what he thinks makes great movie music. "A great
soundtrack is like 'Laura"s theme', the 'Love Story' theme, 'Chariots of Fire'
and all those sorts of things, where it stood by itself," he said. But
recently, he's noticed a changing mood. "Now it is becoming too abstract and
more ambient and more... I don't know, soundscape-ish, more than melody. People
are afraid of melody: 'Oh, that melody is distracting my scene,' it is becoming
like that."
Don't Miss
   The Screening Room
   Special: Ennio Morricone
   Interview: Hans Zimmer
   Our top 10 movie scores
Our top 10 songs from the movies

And that brings fresh challenges for the makers of film music. "Now the
challenges of the composer are much more," he told CNN. "One needs to know of
recording, production, it is not enough to compose a great theme and [know] how
it can intertwine with the movie. And with Indian film it is an even greater
challenge, because we need to be like Michael Jackson, John Williams, Hans
Zimmer and an Indian folk composer all put together. So they expect finesse and
they expect versatility."
Rahman's compositions are versatile enough to be used by both Bollywood and
Hollywood, a case in point being his music for the Hindi film "Dil Se," which
was used almost a decade later by Spike Lee for "Inside Man."
But for Rahman, the process to create film music is being challenged by
increasingly crammed movie schedules. "There used to be a time where the
director and the composer would work together," he explained. "They would
develop themes and the director would shoot a scene, but now the world's so
fast that people are finishing the movie even before going to a composer."
As well as writing songs and scores, Rahman has featured in many Bollywood
films singing the songs which are mimed by the acting superstars. He recently
completed a sell-out tour of the U.S. performing highlights from his songbook
to devoted fans.
He explained to CNN how playback singing is a normal part of Indian film
music. "Well, until I worked in 'Bombay Dreams' six or seven years back, I
never realized that it is not cool to have playback singing. Until then, it was
the story of Indian films where somebody else lip synchs and somebody else
sings." And Rahman has been converted to the Western model, where those singing
on-screen usually provide the vocals themselves. "In my future projects I would
rather have a star who sings," he said.
Director Shekhar Kapur recruited Rahman and fellow composer Craig Armstrong
to provide the score for Cate Blanchett's sequel to "Elizabeth," "The Golden
Age," which premieres at Toronto Film Festival in September this year.
Kapur described the thrill of working with two such different -- and
complementary -- composers. He told CNN, "Here are two totally different
cultures. Craig Armstrong is strings and heart, the skies, choir, angels and
devils, and A. r. is modern, restless music."
"Just to get them together was very interesting for me. To sit there and see
both of them jamming together, that was fascinating. They wouldn't talk, they
would jam, and out of the jamming came the music. It was great."
Rahman is still getting used to his new-found status as darling of both East
and West -- and it leads to a somewhat chaotic lifestyle, as he explained. "It
is terrifying sometimes. I suddenly wake up in Scotland doing music for 'Golden
Age,' and suddenly wake up doing an Indian superstar film, but I think after
all these years I am probably getting a balance."

abt other mds. it makes no difference... v read abt some artists promote
their albums by inviting our boss 2 launch it... d same way i feel this young
kid up coming... he made some posts abt himself which he deserves in this
arr forum so dat many will know but v dont see dat justification
here.. i doubt he wont b allowed wit more (non-arr) posts despite he spks

with the BGM of Black. The Black soundtrack is absolutely haunting
and powerful. He will need to prove his full mettle handling a lofty
song filled soundtrack of an SLB film on his own. He is a self
declared Rahman fan and SLB called him the only other complete
composer besides Rahman. If Rahman ever decides to work with SLB, I
fear that their musical egos may clash. I think Jodha Akbar's music
will have some serious competition from the music of Saawariya. Poor
Ismail Darbar. His angry attitudes are not getting him any assignments.

BTW, I think it is healthy and constructive to discuss music of other
quality composers in this group. It frustrates me when the music of
another composer is brought up and some here immediately slam that
poster and the MD with superior attitudes and snobbish type remarks.
We all know Rahman is the best, but that doesn't mean music from other
MDs can't be appreciated and discussed here within reason. Please be
open minded and respect diverse tastes. Other MDs who I admire are
Vishal B., SEL, Shantanu Moitra, MM Kreem, Vishal Shekhar.

Re: [arr] (non arr) Anyone else anticipating the soundtrack of Saawariya?

2007-08-23 Thread Sarathy S

imho I have also made many (non-arr) posts which r not allowed here.
then only came to know its out n out ARRs forum later realised if
every1 start posting abt their other favorite MDs in tamil, telugu, malayalam ,
kannada, bengali, marati ? & things cud go worse. like allowing this one
but not dat one etc. etc.. & it also wont be nice to spk abt only one area
of (non-arr) MDs. when there r many such MDs in India :-)

Ajit <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

After Jodha Akbar, this is the second most anticipated soundtrack for
me this year. I think Monty is quite talented and did a fantastic job
with the BGM of Black.

Today is a great day for me. After 7th October 2005, today is when I
got my proper chance to meet A.R.Rahman the legend, the God of Indian
music! We were called to AM studios at 5 PM. The studio is beautiful!!
We were told to wait in a room to which we had to go downstairs and
take another flight of stairs. As we proceeded downstairts, I saw a
white Innova taxi pull up at the gate. And lo! ARR steps out of the
vehicle, clad in a white kurta! He casts a glance towards the four of
us who were there, and goes up through another entrance.

The excrutiating wait of half an hour downstairs was
well...excrutiating, especially when you know ARR is up there inside!
And finally, our chance came. "Srishti!" came the call, and we were
ushered into the lobby where we had earlier been seated. I'll describe
the lobby later :P!
There he was! The man! The legend! We had taken cameras along, only to
learn we couldn't take pics :( But there was the press, and they were
taking pics of each band with Boss.

Rahman Sir looked at me and said "hi". I blurted out a " Hello Sir"
when what I actually wanted to say was something like "Do you realize
what a great moment this is for me Mr. Rahman, and it lies entirely in
your hands to make it last for more than a minute"!
Then Rahman Sir asked us how the experience was.
"Great"
And then he asked is to sit in a couch. I sat between our guitarist
and our other vocalist. And Rahman Sir right behind me, resting his
hand on the sofa! Click!

We were promised the photos would be sent to us as soon as possible.

Now to the lobby. Gr8 ambience, with loads of oriental wall hangings,
and other stuff. Particularly noticeable were some electric wall
hangings, that glowed like lightning bolts, all of which converged
around your hand when you touched them! Plus there was an electronic
organ at one corner. Then the showcase. This was interesting. Loads of
awards, including those from CNN-IBN, Filmfare etc were there. And
below was a small bookshelf. Some of the books I saw there: One about
microphone techniques, few books on Islam, a couple from a series
called Great Composers, on Mozart and Bach, a book about Superbowl, an
edition of Society Magazine with ARR on the cover...

I am right now out of words, exhausted, exhilarated, excited and
drained!! All this happened just 3 hours ago! Will post pics and more
when I regain conciousness! :P

classical violinist cum vocalist cum veena player "padmabushan" shri lalgudi
jayaraman is genius in his own style of violin in carnatic classical & his vast
school of music. & to my little knowledge, those who learn classical
music in violin to any guru will adhere to shri.lalgudi's bANi (rich
methodology of violin usage). he is the one who introduced soft but
complicated nuances in violin like in vocal singing. Being rahman fans,
let us not lose our spirits while honouring a great legend

[arr] Re:[Semi ARR] URGENT: How to save cassettes and CDs from fungus?

2007-08-06 Thread Sarathy S

if u have room full of cds & cassettes then ready to face this article

What can I do about moisture problems in my home?

If summertime humidity in your basement is 60% or higher:

   Molds and mildew grow easily.
Moisture wicking through a concrete basement floor can be trapped in
carpeting, resulting in much higher humidity levels than in the air, allowing
mold growth at even lower air humidity.
To reduce humidity during the summer months:

   Reduce any sources of moisture.
Close off the basement to moist, outside air.
Use a dehumidifier to bring the humidity down to 50% or less. An inexpensive
humidity gauge from a hardware store can help you adjust your dehumidifier to
the proper setting.
For severe humidity problems, consider buying a large-capacity,
high-efficiency dehumidifier such as the "Santa Fe" from Therma-Stor.
Make sure gutters and downspouts carry water away from the foundation and
soil is sloped away from the foundation.
Use vent fans during and after bathing and cooking.
Dry clothes outside or in a clothes dryer vented to the outside.
Do not dry clothes on an indoor clothesline.
Put plastic over bare soil in crawl spaces.
Moisture on windows in the winter is also from high relative humidity.

As the outside temperature goes down, the inside surface of your windows can
get colder than the dew point of the air in your house.
When this happens, water condenses on the glass.
To reduce humidity during the winter months:

Make sure the relative humidity is below 40%. Very cold outdoor temperatures
often require indoor humidity lower than 40% to prevent condensation.
Add another layer of glazing with plastic or a storm window.
If you have a humidifier, make sure it is turned off and not leaking water.

Increase airflow over windows by moving furniture away or using fans.
Reduce night temperature setbacks (although this will increase heating
costs).
If mold develops or if you have condensation for more than a few weeks, you
have a more serious problem. For severe moisture problems, consider adding a
whole-house ventilation system (preferably a heat recovery system).

[arr] Loops & Samples (MMPARTHI & AVINASH)

2007-08-02 Thread Sarathy S

TO PARTHI

Please ask other ardent fans.., who know everything about rehman... they will
help as i am not a composer.. At this point of time i can give out only
little about my presence once in his studio 7 years back.. thanks to one of
my friend who is the son of a famous producer to take me there when he visited
there bychance when many misunderstandings happpen to an explanation, even
with members who ask why this much fuss abt loops & samples. i
understand a NORMAL FAN of rehman will enjoy all his tunes without
researching.. & become practical even if it is a partial inspiration or
entire lift but FANATICS cannot digest even if there are proofs 4 partial
inspiration.. & more of it a third category rehman fans exist here who
takes all hard effort to find tunes from vaious loop-samples package & various
albums & submit them with its name further only to prove rehman too influenced
by packages & alien tunes. where do these fans fit ?? AND TO
 AVINASH,

TODAY i took sometime to go through older posts I SEE THERE ARE MANY
MEMBERS OLDER THAN MY JOINING HERE SUBMITTING SONGS & SAMPLES OR LOOPS TO FIND
THESE IN REHMAN ALBUMS. I DO NOT BELONG TO 2ND & 3RD CATEGORY.. I AM
NOT THE ONE LOOKING FOR MIRAGE.. even in old posts from the years of origin
of this group there had been many discussions abt rehman's usage of
loops, samples, copy, lift... etc. ONE OF THE GUYS RANOJOY (I BELIEVE HE
HIMSELF COMPOSER) SAYS AS LONG AS IT IS COMMERCIAL LOOPS PACKAGE NOTHING WRONG
& STILL REHMAN ABLE TO SHINE & EXCEL & THERE HAD BEEN DISCUSSIONS OF
USING FRUITY LOOPS BEFORE., AVINASH-JI, NOW I SUGGEST U TO GOOGLE
WITH A.R.RAHMAN, LOOPS, SAMPLES * IF POSSIBLE ANSWER THEM ALL... INSTEAD TO MY
FAIR MAILS.

Hello Sarathy, for your information, Rahman had his own samples
bank of around 16000 samples in his studio, when he started composing with
roja. Which was also a record holding collection in entire asia. And I believe
that most of these collections were his own creative work. So don't expect that
he will go for cheap samples which available on net.
And secondly,I don't think Rahman copies or uses the loops. He has highy
sofisticated studio in asia, He can produce such high quality sounds in a fly.
It's all rahman's talent and creativity that makes him stand out of all

[arr] Loops & Samples ! (Oasis Vs Mirage)

2007-08-01 Thread Sarathy S

Praba or anyone else & whoever want 2 prove rehman too uses loops & samples &
does that OK... when rehman asks to see oasis some refuse 2 look only 2
mirage... it is like saying.. suppose rehman did civil engineering & he
plans 4 a building with d available materials in d world like sand, cement,
water, brick, glass, pvc, wood, steel & tools with men to assist. but
but... with his own creativity does architectural design to deliver a building
beautifully out ot these above said materials.. result is building looks
awesome & gives unusual look than other builders... nobody misses dat
building.. when this is d case it is now 4 some 2 expect him do a building
without using any of these materials.. some new strange stuff like oxygen
or with gold, silver, diamonds & crystals is not that sounds strange
these pple r looking for mirage... these loops & samples etc.. etc.. etc.. do
not prevent anyone to listen & enjoy rehman's
 delivers why a

big fuss abt lifts & inspirations... unless otherwise d composers sue others
to imitate their sounds entirely... it is clear these usages are part &
parcel of every MD in this world & not just India... main factor reg.
rehman is d combination he uses & provides music in an unusual, uncommon way, a
feast & dats wat special abt him to distinguish him as a talented composer.
why cannot some accept this truth whatever he does is different to other
Indian composers in terms of sounds & is musical treat.. if some going to
argue there r few MDs who sounds like rehman mean the credit is only 4
rehman.. he is the one who introduced new trends & new sounds in music
technically & others follow such ways to survive.

Audio Samples Used by ARR:

Rahman is the first person who used a lot of samples in his songs and the
second person is Ranjit Barot. Ranjit used to work with rahman and Ranjit
programmed drums in HUMMA HUMMA. Now everybody is using samples in mumbai
(Salim-Sulaiman, Sandeep Sherodker, jacky, inderjeet sharma, ram sampat &
sandeep chowta) if you guys think that how can sandeep chowta make sound like
rahman? there are samples.

Here are some examples:

1] Shabba Shabba [Daud] with african voices? Those are samples not real
africans voices.

2] Spanish claps in Jumbalika [Thakshak]? Samples again.

3] Chinese vocals in Latka [Hindustani]? Its a chinese sample from the cd
(SPECTRASONICS HEART OF ASIA)

4] Killer drum beats in rangeela songs? Drum samples from the cd (BEST SERVICE
XXL 1500) and its a long list.

5] Final beats of Mukkala Muqabla [Kadhalan] sounds like dr.alban africa.
Samples again.

6] Beats in Mangta Hai Kya [Rangeela]

7] Early bands like Deep Forest and some Euro techno bands used this concept a
lot. Thats why title sound of Thillana Thillana [Muthu] sounds like Deep forest
songs

There are many other samples rahman used in many of his songs. It is not
copying just using a commercially available samples!

rayrai rightly put it. even matured & educated pple sometimes go wrong for
want of quick fame & money.. it is not correct to suppress dileep. he
must have been given equal credits to that of magna sound & malgadi
shubha.. after all every album is a team work.. & considering dileep a
composer & not just singer to omit names as it often happen in some albums &
dileep was d main composer 4 SMF.. both of them wrongly judged abt dileep's
capacity & underestimated his talent with just one album is something not
acceptable time has proved whose side is right... even now if they
(magna & malgadi) deny sighting it as a mistake 4m company's inlay
card-designer's part or try 2 find some other justifications, they still hide
their wrong approach... & dont have d right mind-set to accept pple or 2
give respect to other professionals as well...

What is he talking all about as if he gave a birth for ARR in music.
His justification is nowhere to be sustained. He says ARR should have
walked to him and clarified. Why didn't he approach ARR b4
re-publishing. He just tried to encash ARR's name in no way is it
ethical in the form of sincere business. If ARR has sued after
becoming a superstar he just used the name of a superstar and dont he
ever realize what it takes to use a name of a superstar.
I had both the copies (tapes eventually destroyed)of the Set me free.
The pre -ARR just had credits to Dileep (no ARR) for music. The album
title had glorified Shubha & Magna Sound. That makes it as Shubha's
album. The post ARR was only ARR. If talked about it was all correct
by ARR because Shubha was neglected there and that being her album.
Also in the magazine ARR clearly mentions that. He did not demand for
the royalty of using his name. But fought for the right cause.

Wow ! its wonderful... rehman made this bit a hit.. after listening to
this sample this has strengthened my point as said b4 "that does not mean
composers lack originality". there is difference btween complete lift &
inspiration... i can say rehman inspired by these samples & loops but d
creation of rehman's idea of song is magnificent. whatelse we can say
nothing but interesting birth of 5 minute song 4m few seconds loop/sample..
it is all intelligence speaks how to develop d idea.. in film directors
language they say how they developed d story & screen play with a small spark
of an idea.. this is different 4m a movie having a similar story.. if
any other junior composer cld get a trak resembling to munbe vaa... 4m any
other hiphop album containing lines like rangoli chorus etc. atleast to 50% of
rehman's song i agree it is a lift..

I agree with KunalWould you say that because somebody had the "Theen
taal" (tabla) in a song...nobody else can use it. If somebody else used it,
would you actually be shocked. Its just a sequence of beats / notes. The true

to touch my soul.

Here is my top 5:

1. Poongatrile/Yeh Ajnabi from Uyire/Dil Se - (both versions are equally
effective).
2. Aazadi from Bose - The Forgotten Hero (ARR's voice and the chorus are
awesome)
3. Tamizha Tamizha - Roja (the music & picturization has a combined effect)
4. Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera - Swades (gr8 lyrics & amazing rendition)
5. Yeh Tara Woh Tara - Swades (the combo of Udit's voice, 2 different kids'
voice does the trick)

of course i can go on with more but i'll stop with top 5 for now

so what is on your list?

2007-07-29 Thread Sarathy S

  hi chup_shhh

to put this comment i dont need to listen to samples... i m here to say,
as u r a composer u know these things 4 u have to use these loops & samples &
even various interesting tunes. only pple like u & these djs & music
lovers who r extensively proned to more albums including international albums
could find these things otherwise mass music lovers who r mostly not
involved in these areas are more satisfied with what the MDs give to them.
such music lovers including me do not need any proof that this one is original
score that one is a lift... we really want to enjoy d resultant
product. one thing i can say that. why our indian MDs are not bothering
about their scores being lifted by others if they happen to hear them ??

for d simple reason they know they too have taken some other composer's tune
be a one line tune/bgm or small loop or even a full-song identical one...
if they r clean & confident about their every composition is a original score
totally independent & no way has any part of outsiders album or loop banks/song
banks, they will sue other composers for lifting... & would become a cover
story... they themselves know about their kind of work & become silent
audience... i would say that is not at all wrong if others say it is
wrong mean the sounds should entirely be indian without any mixture of western
which is something absurd to do it for they are doing business... & indian
film music is all d western way with indian sounds & does not mean they lack
originality Most of the MDs scores certainly have originality when taken
indian side of sounds & with this they just fuse d western genre & give us
hits. for this fusion they need to take support
from outside tracks which r not known to us as said before & sometimes i
used to criticise other MDs using rehman tunes & 4 that my friends would ask me
to meet rehman to speak about this & they say rehman will show about d sounds
he used so far from other western albums. our MDs whatever they do with
hits, we r able to enjoy. & let us not make a big fuss about lifting be
it rehman albums or other Mds albums. :-)
