Re: [arr] List of 5.1 Audios released - To Gopal and all

2007-01-10 Thread V SRINIVASA KRISHNAN
Hi Gopal and all,

I'm a regular collector of DTS 5.1 CDs, regardless of the MD for some technical
reasons. I'm having all the DTS 5.1 CDs that have been released yet, except
Manmadhan and Vettayaadu Vilayaadu. I confirm that Sillunu Oru Kadhal is not
released in DTS 5.1 CD format.

I hoped that Ah Aah and SOK would be released in this format. But it didn't
happened.

I wanted to list you all, the name of the movies, for which the DTS Discs has
been released.

1.Boys
2.Manmadhan
3.Anniyan
4.Gajini
5.Chandramukhi
6.God Father - Released prior to the movie release itself
7.Vettayadu Vilayadu

Our Boss should release such discs for every movie. I'm sure that Sivaji will
have a DTS Disc released, because, starting from Boys, Shankar is keen on
releasing this disc for his movies.

NOTE: I'm having these discs in my home town. I'll be going there for Pongal.
So while coming back, I'll bring them and post you the Technical Details of
these releases. Then, you all will be proud of our Boss's studio, as most of
these releases were mixed at AM Studios.

Long Live ARR. Long Live his Music. Long Live his Service.

Regards,
V SRINIVASA KRISHNAN

[arr] (ARR) Haunting Melodies

2007-01-06 Thread V SRINIVASA KRISHNAN
http://www.thestatesman.net/page.news.php?clid=19&theme=&usrsess=1&id=142662

Haunting melodies:
Gulzar saab and I have a common interest ~ inspiration from Sufi songs. It’s a
pleasure working with him and it’s amazing to see him take on heavy work at his
age

Roja, Bombay, Taal, Lagaan, the Broadway musical Bombay Dreams, Rang De
Basanti… AR Rahman is here to stay. Little needs to be written about Rahman’s
achievements. He is news once again, this time for his compositions for Mani
Ratnam’s Guru. Sneha Hazarika in conversation with AR Rahman.

 On the music of Guru…
When we started work on Guru, I experienced a degree of restlessness, for I
didn’t want to repeat the sounds heard in a musical I worked on ~ Alaipayuthey.
I was in Toronto when I did the “scratch”. Soon after, I sent it to Mani, who
liked it and called on Gulzar sahab to pen the lyrics. The first song was
recorded in Toronto itself. Then I was asked to work on a love song. I began
thinking on the lines of a Sufi number, one that had the feel of what Nusart
Fateh Ali Khan did. And that’s how Dum dara dum dara was born. It’s dedicated
to the Ustad, whose tenth death anniversary will be observed soon. Moving
ahead, I had to visit Hong Kong to perform at a concert. The trip led me to
visit a store selling musicals instruments. The idea of using the accordion in
Guru struck. Usually I purchase keyboards. But this time I settled for
something vintage and took time to learn the instrument. The sway of the
accordion can be heard in almost all the tracks. And there is the Yaman
kalyani melody I have tuned to the lyrics of Hazrat Amir Khushroo (modified by
Gulzar).

On his favourite song in Guru… Maiya Maiya
I went to Haj year last year and heard a guy near the river who kept saying
“waya waya waya”. I learnt that waya, waya meant water and felt it was an
interesting sound, which is also very Indian. And so was born Maya maya. The
interesting thing in the track is the Gujarati bit at the end. It was Mani’s
idea.

On replacing the song that has been picturised with Ash riding a bicycle…
Mani said he wanted to shoot Ash’s introduction song in a sequence that
featured her on a bicycle. Once I received the lyrics from Gulzar saab, it was
set to to match the energy of cycling. Mani said Aishwarya would learn to cycle
before shooting begins. Unfortunately she met with an accident… she fell down
from the cycle and the song did not work out. Na na re replaced it.

On his association with Mani Ratnam
It’s been an interesting journey. More than us, fans must be speculating as to
what we are going to do next. Our thought process has the same wavelength.
Whenever I see one of his shots, I take on the task of creating something
different as a challenge. I guess he feels the same way when he listens to my
music. In Guru we are dependent on each other. This time around the songs were
ready before he began shooting.

 On his rapport with Gulzar
We have not worked together in many films but I think we share a good rapport.
Gulzar saab and I have a common interest ~ inspiration from Sufi songs. It’s a
pleasure working with him and it’s amazing to see him take on heavy work at his
age.

On Bappi Lahiri singing in Guru
Mani wanted a “bhang” song. Incidentally I was at attending a music award
ceremony where Bappida performed. I felt he performed beautifully. We wanted
someone to sing Bolo Guru and Gulzar advised Bappida should be approached. His
voice also suites Abhishek.

 On his singing in Guru
I can be heard on Tere bina and the theme song, Jage Hain. I can also be heard
now and then on the other tracks.

 On singing for superstars
Every time I sing, whether for Shah Rukh in Dil Se or for Abhishek in Guru, I
feel my voice doesn’t match the stars. Only after listening to the recording 20
or 30 times, I can convince myself about the performance. In fact, the first
time I listen to the track after recording, I get shocked. With time I get used
to it. Hopefully others don’t think the same way about the tracks (laughs).

Re: [arr] IS THIS TRUE??? - Here is the article - To Gomzy and all

2007-01-04 Thread V SRINIVASA KRISHNAN

A long meeting and Rahman is back in his air-conditioned car. It is imperative
to see if he is actually affected. "This is not the first time with me. I have
been going to remote places of Gujarat, Bengal, etc. It is always good to meet
people through an NGO. This way the cause gets noticed. Moreover, to help them
in an individual capacity you need a lot of infrastructure. I have tried to
interact with the financially weak in my personal capacity at home, but it is
usually unmanageable." He recalls an incident at home:
"On the 27th day of Ramadhan I was
giving zakat (alms in cash or kind) last time. When I came out of the house, I
was shocked to see some 3000 people gathered outside. When I tried to
distribute, people jumped on each other to grab it. They jostled and snatched
it from each other. It created mayhem. So much so that we had to close the door
and call some really deserving people like the handicapped, the very old and
ailing ones, one by one and hand over the zakat. I was moved. It is a shame for
our country that one out of four people goes to bed hungry."
And if not anything, Rahman is geared to realise his dream of building a
centre for spiritual healing in his hometown, Chennai. With slight hesitation,
he gives in. "It was my cherished dream to build a centre of spiritual healing.
It seems as if the time has come for it. With the money I earned, I have bought
a 60-acre land on the outskirts of Chennai, out of which we will use 40 acres
for the centre," he beams. Why spiritual healing you may ask and what is that?
"It is healing only by praying." And he believes it happens because he saw it
happening with his own daughter, now six years old. "She had a hole in her
heart when she was born. Since she was so small, surgery was very risky. So I
resorted to my spiritual guru and by the time she was two, the hole vanished.
It was only the prayers that worked. Since then, I do believe in spiritual
healing," says the composer, who prefers to call himself a sufi.
Talk to Rahman about his spiritual leanings and he talks of Islam and Sufism.
"You know there are four stages in Islam: Shariyat, Tarikat, Marifat and
Haqeeqat. I am a strong believer in them."
He observes rozas, offers namaz and still calls himself a sufi. "A Muslim is a
sufi, isn't he? And if they are not, they should be one. Because God has
created all creatures, why should we differentiate them?" he questions. You may
argue on that but nobody can doubt he heals through his music. He cares for his
muse - people.
 Musicals

Not that he is happy with all his compositions. But some he had to "because of
film demand". So far if "Swades" was his favourite musical venture, he was sad
at the treatment of the "Maula" song in "Mangal Pandey".
"Though `Mangal Mangal' was a sutradhar song on which I had to work a lot but
the beautiful `Maula' song was not exploited fully. Only a part of it was used
in the film Javed Saab (Javed Akhtar who has penned the film's song) and I were
very unhappy with it," he says, appearing hurt.
For now he has two more landmark films in hand "Rang De Basanti" and Ashutosh
Gawarikar's "Akbar-Jodha" which has 12 songs. "This should be my last period
film," he laughs.
Is it easy to score music for period films, especially when there is hardly
any musical evidence available from that era. "I go with the feel. We do take
artistic liberties in such cases."
He also has Abbas Tahirwala's "young love story" and Rajeev Menon's "musical"
film coming up. As the maestro descends from his car, the electronic media
queues up for a byte. It is 4.30 p.m. and no one knows that the musician "had a
bite only at five in the morning." But the idol of the millions is humble
enough to mingle with the masses.
Did anyone say that success reveals
what you truly are?
Regards,
V SRINIVASA KRISHNAN

thats why he is copying. the used music or loops can make the audience feel

ears of a NORMAL listener (most of the ppl are normal listeners). this is
because its still a new thing to their ears. HJ is doin the copying method to
attract audience, as well as the other MD's. But Rahman's music is total new
piece in each and every album. high creativity and knowledge are required to do
this. im sure Rahman anna have a lot it, which is Zero for other MDs.

This comments is for ur "where is- where is" points (the missing parts in
Rahmans music). Do u know the proverb "kundu cattiliye kuthurai otte kudathu",
its oso mentioned in the song "Romeo attam potta". Rahman anna neva uses the
same things again & again. coz he is not a Ordinary MD. as a Rahman anna's fan
u should be willing to accept something new i his new albums. Rahman anna's
music is not a recyling centre. but i think he should focus on "Theme musics"
all of us knows that, he is the king in theme musics.

This is about "thazhuvude nazhuvude" and "mazha mazha". Do u know bout the
film industry or not? those songs are the requirements of the directors or the
producer. Rahman anna have to do it. he has no choice on it. anyway stop saying
that "idiotic". better mind ur words buddy. if u have a look at "maja maja".
the is some sort of new musics there. there is some native african loops (a
very little). im sure u wont hear it in any other MD's album. listen to the
percussion that has been used. In "thazhuvude Nazhuvude" Rahman anna brings
difference in the vocal of SPB. it was not a normal SPB vocal. it was a sexy +
passionate + strict voice. hear it buddy!!! i know that, these songs are
unnecessary song for Rahman anna, he have to do it. because of the demand.
however Rahman anna still shows his masterpiece in those kind of songs. im sad
coz u cant notice it.

  Jul 17, 2004, 23:14

if ("" > "") {
  document.write ("");   document.write (""" + "" + """);
document.write (""); }After listening to the songs from
Sree aanjanEyam, I tried to reach the playback singer Mallikharjuna. When I
spoke to him with the help of another singer Saandip, I learnt that music
director Mani Sarma was in the USA at that time, and got his contact
information. I called him to get a small interview and he readily agreed, but
it did not happen until the following week. Though it initially happened that I
missed him at the scheduled time, I could finally reach him at 12.00 midnight
and we started chatting. A few excerpts of the interview are presented here.
Sri: Hello sir, thanks a lot for giving your time.
Mani: No problem, Sri.
Sri: Where shall we start? Where did you start learning music? I know that
your father Sarma gaaru used to work as an assistant to the music directors.
Did you learn it from him or was it from others?
Mani: No, my father is my first guru. Whatever I learned is mostly from him. I
used to write all the music notes for him when I was a kid. That is how I
learned the music from a very young age.
Sri: What about your brothers and sisters?
Mani: We are five. I am the last one. The eldest one is a sister; her husband
is a retired assistant deputy commissioner. My nephew, to whom you spoke in
Sunnyvale, is her son. The second one is a brother who is working as a bank
officer; he has a married son. The third is another brother who looks after the
Studio, and the fourth one is another sister
Sri: Did your father encourage you when you chose this profession?
Mani: Initially, he didn’t. He doesn’t like me to come into this field. He
wanted me to study and do some job. But I was interested in music. It was my
mother who convinced my father to buy me a keyboard. And seeing my interest, he
finally agreed, and that was how I got my first keyboard. Thus, I set out on my
musical journey (laughs).
Sri: As we know, it is very difficult to get a break into the films. How about
your case?
Mani: What, do you think I got a break so easily (laughs)? No, it didn’t happen
so. I worked as a keyboard player for 15 years before I worked as a music
director.
 Sri: Fifteen years?! Really!?
Mani: (laughs) Yes. I think I am the only keyboard player who worked with four
generations of the music directors. I worked with Sree Ramesh Naidu gaaru,
Pendyala Srinivas, Pendyala Nageswera Rao gaaru...
Sri: Pendyala Srinivas? Who is he?
Mani: He is from Tamil films. Then I worked with Saluri Rajeshwara Rao gaaru,
Ilayaraja gaaru, Shankar-Ganesh gaarlu, Raj-Koti gaarlu - A.R. Rahman and I
used to be keyboard players with them for some time (laughs) - Vidyasagar gaaru
- I was his keyboard player for his first film Dharma Teja. I also worked with
Keeravani gaaru, with Karthik Raja, Yuvan Sankar Raja, and also to Devisri
Prasad.
Sri: Karthik Raja? I thought you and Karthik got break at the same time?
Mani: Kartik got the break before. I worked as a keyboard player for his debut
film ullaasam. Then I also worked with Yuvan Sankar’s first film, and Devisri
Prasad’s first film dEvi. I worked for many films as a keyboard player, and
worked in almost all languages. I worked with Hindi directors also, like Anu
Malik and R.D. Burman. I used to work almost 18 to 20 hours per day some times
- two hours in the morning with one music director, next four hours with
another music director, ...I used to juggle between recording theaters. I did a
lot of jingles too.
Sri: Yeah, you worked for Varma with R.D. Burman in antam, right?
Mani: Yes, chalekki undauko... song for antam. I worked with Varma for raat
even before that, which doesn’t have any songs. For gaayam, I worked as a
keyboard player under Sri’s music direction.
Sri: You worked with so many people... and who did you love to work more?
Mani: (laughs) Nothing like that. Everyone has their own style, Sri. Keeravani
has a different way, Ilayaraja is different, ...so is everyone. They are apart
from each other. My first inspiration was Ilayaraja gaaru. So, I like him more,
naturally. But it doesn’t mean that I do not like others. I do like many. So,
please do not misquote me.
Sri: So, when did you get the first real break?
Mani: While working with Varma, I was signed for a film by Vyjayanthi banner.
They were making a film with Chiranjeevi gaaru in Varma's direction. That film,
however, was stopped after couple of songs (which were later used in
chooDaalani undi). Meanwhile, I signed two more films with Chiranjeevi garu -
baavagaaru! baagunnaaraa? and Anji. It made a prominent news headline - that I
signed three films with him (laughs).
Sri: But, I think none of these films were release

 A Class Apart

Guru

This album is one of A.R.Rahman's best so far, and the reasons are many. Each
songs is treated in a unique way and grows on you. The rich orchestration and
beat cycles are par excellence and the use of voices and harmony is amazing.
One does not expect anything less than magic when Rahman and Gulzar team up,
and the album lives up to the expectations. The track Tere Bina has a Sufi
touch. The influence of Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is evident in the chorus
Dum Dara Dum Dara. Rahman's voice, which has matured from his Maa Tujhe Salaam
days, is poignant. Noted composer Bappi Lahiri has sung the track Ek Lo Ek
Muft, which suits his voice to the T. Mayya is a dance number influenced by
Turkish music. But the real clincher is the duet Ay Hairathe, sung by Hariharan
and Alka Yagnik. The music arrangement is worth emulating and the use of
accordion is reminiscent of the old times. Baazi Laga is a fast-paced song
featuring Rahman's favourites Udit Narayan and Madhushree. The last
track, Jaage hain, sounds like a lullaby, but the rich choral ensemble is
worth listening to. Rahman's fans and music lovers alike will surely thank him
for this Christmas present.

May be, we had some ideas to wish our Boss in person. But, as a busiest person,
he will need privacy on that day, to be with his family.

So, I totally agree with you, Vijay.

i think the best thing that is going to happen just around his birthday is the

[arr] (ARR) Boys is India's first DTS Disc

2006-11-30 Thread V SRINIVASA KRISHNAN
Hi all,

DTS Disc is an audio cd with the original DTS soundtracks.
The bitrate is 1000+ kbps. I can't tell you the exact bitrate, because I'm
having all my cds in my hometown.

Actually the DVD technology is brought in the form of CDs. These discs can be
played in

1. DVD Players with DTS Support
2. In PCs, softwares PowerDVD and WinDVD will play. Since, it is an audio cd,
you can even play it in Winamp. All the tracks will play upto its running time.
But you will hear a HISS sound from Winamp. Even, WinDVD will go to unstable
state, while playing this disc. Only PowerDVD plays it very well.

And upto my knowledge from various sources, Boys is the first DTS Disc in
India.

I am a regular collector of DTS Discs. I am having Boys, Anniyan, Gajini,
Chandramukhi and God Father. The CDs that I have to get are Manmadhan and
Vetayaadu Vilayaadu.

I am pasted below, all my previous mails related to DTS Discs, for your
reference.

Expecting for Sillunu Oru Kaadhal in DTS Disc format.

ARR always rocks. Long live ARR

I BOUGHT ANNIYAN DTS DISC BECAUSE IT HAS BEEN MIXED AT THE VERY PROUD AM

Thank U very much

Some of the bass lines, rhythm or additional synth work is done by
the programmers, but the amount of work depends from song to song.
People who have played this role are Ranjit Barot, Pravin Mani, Josh
Sridhar, H. Sridhar, Rafee, Yak Bondy and GV.
Obviously both PM and RB are very talented. Ranjit Barot's
song "khwahishon se" from Holiday is very good.

Also Yammo Yammo reminds me Chinna Chinna Mazhai Thuligal song.

Re: [arr] Guru impressions and my honest thoughts on Rahman

2006-11-18 Thread V SRINIVASA KRISHNAN
Hi all,

I too agree with Ajith.

And here is my votes for Guru tracks.

My favourites

Ek Lo Ek Muft - The first interlude is too good.
Barso Re - The beginning flute and Naanaare are good.
Tere Bina - Our Boss sings very well. Chinmayee's voice is good.
Mayya - Except the flute piece, the song is good.
Jaage Hain - Only our Boss is talented to compose slow tempo songs in a
beautiful way.
Ay Hairathe - Hariharan has done a good job.

In the full album, the percussion, flute and strings are good, except the
Ashoka flute piece. It is easily noticeable giving way to some guys tell "ARR
copied"

The song which I consider "not good from ARR" is Baazi Lagaa. It sounds like
some other MDs song. I feel that it may be a second mistake by our Boss, like
Markandeya song in NEW amidst other good songs in that movie.
It doesn't sound like ARR-Mani song. Let us wait and see, how Mani Sir has used
this song.

Overall GURU is very worth buying.

V SRINIVASA KRISHNAN

Ajit <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Heard the
music of Guru and I am both spellbound in parts and
disappointed in other parts. Quite a contrast of feelings to go
through within one soundtrack. As a passionate Rahman fan myself and
knowing what an impact Rahman's music has had in the past with Mani's
direction, I have been anticipating this day of release of Guru's
music when it was first announced.

Please understand that Rahman is almost like my own "Guru". As a
keyboard player myself, I look up to him not only as a musician, but
as a human being, a man of humility, grace, passion, compassion, and
spirituality. Please take what I am about to say as something that is
painful to admit even to myself.

First of all, with Guru, 3 tracks are spellbinding, magical, classics,
whatever you call it - Tere Bina, Ay Hairathe, and Jaage Hain. Two
tracks to me are strictly ok to good - Barso Re and Mayya, and two
tracks - well, I can't believe these two songs are on a Mani-Rahman
soundtrack - Baazi Laga and Ek Muft (although Ek Muft will probably
grow on me, esp once I see how it is picturized.

A very good friend of mine who is a member of this group and who
wishes to remain anonymous shared some observations with me, which I
was too afraid to admit to myself at first. Please understand first
that I am not one of those who wants another Dil Se or Taal. I am for
one glad that Rahman likes to move in new directions and set trends.
But, of late, he has been on another trend too, which does not rub
well on me. Rahman is going against the grain of his natural style.
He likes to experiment in new directions and I love that about Rahman,
but the magical spontaneity and natural ease of composing has been
missing. It's almost as if Rahman is changing his entire mentality
of composing on purpose for some reason, even though the effort is
always there and brilliance is there in flashes. In fact, his
compositions seem a lot more "effortful" of late and that slick and
brilliant spontaneity is not as evident and even absent a lot more.
One person made a comment on another board saying that today, Rahman
seems to be "trying too hard".

One observation is that in recent Rahman soundtracks, there is overall
a relative lack of arrangement depth and elaborative musicianship that
characterized his earlier works. The bells and whistles are not quite
there, and frankly, his arrangements in many of his recent soundtracks
have sounded "muddy". Those crisp simple arrangements with ethnic
beats and simple melodies with lush strings and softer mid tones are
lacking more, replaced by technoish rhythms with a muddled sounding
accompaniment section. I have also noticed less use of true acoustic
instruments and a de-emphasis on expansive musical interludes,
replaced by only chords or one line improvizations (exception -
Swades). I believe that Rahman has not "lost anything", and the proof
is in many stand out songs in recent soundtracks like the ones just
mentioned in Guru, RDB, MP, and his consistent brilliance in Swades
and Bose (two exceptions to my point). His BGMs are also amazing.

Take Guru for example. I can understand that songs like Baazi Laga nd
Ek Muft are situational numbers and they probably suit the director's
scenes well. But, they sound so ordinary, as if any other MD's
compositions. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but I really feel that way!
Baazi Laga is frankly skippable! And listen to Barso Re, it's catchy,
but it just sounds so plain jane. Even with situational numbers,
Rahman can do so much better. Why is he going against his natural
grain of brilliance and elaborative musicianship and lush arrangements
in some songs, but not in others? This gives a soundtrack a stark
inconsistency that is confusing and also limits its

[arr] Guru release getting delayed

2006-11-17 Thread V SRINIVASA KRISHNAN
Hi all,

I spoke to Music World - Spencer Plaza, yesterday evening. They said that Guru
will be available by today morning.

But when I went there today morning, they told that it will be available in the
evening.

Then I rang up to them around 5pm today. They were telling that the album has
not yet arrived. May be today evening or tomorrow morning, it'll come.

Why the release is getting delayed like this?

I got disappointed with this.

Such delays are overtaken by Piracy. Then only, we ARR fans and some strict
legal copy buyers will go and get it.

With the sales result, some shop owners will start telling that ARR is having
very less sales figure nowadays.

Re: [arr] strange habit

Hi,

I thought of sharing my habit - A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT.

I'll buy legal copy of ARR's music.
Listen to the songs for the first day.
The next day, create an image file and burn it to a new cd.
Then have my legal cd in my cd shelves.
When the burnt cd gets corrupted, again I'll burn the image to a new cd and use
it.

I'll use the legal cd for two purposes - 1. Burn a copy for myself 2. Reading
track information, credits,...

[arr] (arr) Guru audio getting delayed

2006-11-17 Thread V SRINIVASA KRISHNAN
Hi all,

Now the time is 07-30pm. I rang up to Music World. They are saying that Guru
will be available surely tomorrow or day after tomorrow.

One thing I wanted to tell.

As an Unversal Music Director, ARR should make the Music Companies to release
the audio as an International release, on the same day.

This delay happened to God Father - foreign releases got delayed and now for
Guru - Indian, especially Tamilnadu release is getting delayed. It is a shame
for the Music company for not releasing the audio in the Music Director's Home
town, in the first day itself.
