Hi, Fun thing here is that the guy is comparing Boss's Hindi albums with Tamil Composers! Tamil Music Industry requires a different set of enjoyment aspects (Sivaji, Sakkarakkatti) etc, while in Hindi the requirements are different. The maestro recognises that and is able to churn out hits in both ways. No wonder his tracks rule the roost in both languages, which is phenomenal. As to Ada, it is a wonderful, wonderful album. I thought it was a better album than JTYJN. Though JTYJN is *THE MOST POPULAR ALBUM *this year. Harris Jayaraj is a talented, but a bit one-dimensional in my opinion. However there are fresh voices coming up in Tamil Industry like Vasanth Saravanan (Subrahmanyapuram) etc. Instead of pitching all them straight up against the meastro, why don't we enjoy the value addition they provide to music? It's a historical film and Rahman has made some of his best music with these. The expectations are sky high for many for this soundtrack and that's kind of scary. I'm pretty sure Rahman worked hard for the music and created music suited for the film. Ashutosh and him have a great track record with Lagaan and Swades, so I'm not lacking confidence for a decent score. It's those darn expectations that keep creeping in. A buffet later, we were ushered into the conference hall. Krish anchored the proceedings as usual. We were told Rahman Sir wouldn't be coming as it was Ramzan Day and that the verdict was recorded at his studio and would be played to us. The three finalists in contention were : Oxygen, Zinx and V3. Then they played a video about how it all began and where it had reached now, interspersed with Rahman Sir talking about the show and the talent that was exhibited. Then there was a dance performance for the Ooh La la la song. Then there was the vote of thanks, thanking everyone involved. This was followed by another dance performance by the same group, to Athiradee.I could judge the restlessess of the finalists, waiting for the results! As for our band, we were just waiting to pounce on the winning band, and ask them to treat us. Then it was time to announce the results! Krish announced that Rahman Sir would announce the result played on video. Rahman Sir spoke. A brief of what he said : Sir felt all the bands exceeded his expectations. Also he said that there were some aspects that were expected from bands, which were not exhibited by some, and some other aspects which he least expected, but was exhibited by the bands. Then came the surprise/shock of the day. Rahman ji said that he didn't like judging because it was very difficult. He also said he couldn't decide on ONE winner alone. So he had chosen 6 winners!!! *Silence* And on expected lines, the three finalists were announced as the first three winners (in no particular order). Then he announced Agam, Madras Tunes and Srishti (Yes thats us!!!) as the other 3 winners! This was the moment of my life! The biggest surprise ever. Even thrilling was watching Rahman Sir, the only inspiration behind any music we've made. watching the video of our band perform in the quarterfinals and comment on our performance. Sir said he liked our boldness of expression, and our attitude onstage, and that there was Jeevan in our music! What happened next is just a vague remembrance now... Hugs, photo sessions, the trophy and speaking to the media, thanking Rahman sir, 2 gulab jamoons, a sandwich and an ice cream..a few phone calls...Back home. I was born and brought up in a small town, in a lower middle class family. We couldnt afford to buy a Tape recorder or cassettes then. We had a big old radio in which I dont have any memory of listening to film songs. We didnt have a TV either. We use to go to our neighbors house to watch TV. I think, after Roja, Rahman did Pudhiya Mugam, because I remember liking Kannukku Mai Azhaghu so much to an extent that I wrote my own lyrics for the song, a few insane lines of which I still remember. It goes like, Vetrikku Mei Azhaghu, Tholvikku Poi Azhaghu. I dont know where I listened to that song first. More than the songs, the background score of Pudhiya Mugam (which was earlier used as title music for a teleserial Revathi) drew my attention. I was going for a private tuition every evening to my class teachers house where they had a good audio system. They use to listen to the songs even when we study. I remember seeing the lyrics booklet (a first time for a Tamil soundtrack) that came with a well designed Thiruda Thiruda cassette. One day, instead of reading my lessons, I started reading that lyrics book while they were listening to the songs. The song that hit me like a hammer blow was Veerapandi Kottaiyilae. I couldnt believe what I was listening to. I couldnt understand anything in musical terms but I was wonderstruck by the energy of the beats and the unexpected variations in its tempo. The freshness, the energy, the innovation and the experimentation in Thiruda Thiruda music is still an unparalleled achievement. The lunacy of Rahmans music making style in that soundtrack is still unbelievable. One fine evening, one of my school mates asked me whether I heard newly released Arabic kadaloram song. He said that it was going to be the song of the year. I didnt understand what he meant by saying song of the year. I just forgot about it. By that time, we had bought a small black and white Onida TV. In DD, they use to air a count down program called Ek se Badkar Ek in which I saw Kannaalanae song for the first time. We were then a big joint family with 15 members. My uncle (my fathers brother) had bought a small tape recorder. He often played Bombay songs. Since, my father had a fight with him, I was not allowed inside his room to listen to the songs. I still remember how I would plead my grandpa to ask my uncle to increase the volume so that I can listen to the songs from the hall itself. That was the amount of interest in music Rahman kindled in me. I use to beg him to play the songs again and again. It was at that time I started buying lyrics book. A lyrics book is a small book made of low quality paper of grey in colour, which will have lyrics of all the songs from a movie, printed in it. In the front cover, it will contain a picture of the hero and heroine of the movie. Inside, the song lyrics would be printed along with the name of the lyricist and the singers at the right hand top corner. They use to sell it outside our school. I bought it for 25 or 30 paisa. I use to listen to the song with lyrics book in my hand and sing along with it. Bombay was the first soundtrack for which I bought this lyrics book and use to keep it in secret between my school books. From then on, I bought the lyrics for all Rahman soundtracks that I got a chance to listen to. I use to steal money from my Dads purse for buying these books. Other info requested by few members: 1) Roja Janeman female humming was sung by Sadhana Sargam (Sujatha was not in the concert) 2) Ramta Jogi and Samajgayi's female singer was Neethi. 3) Vijay Yesudhas, Madhusree Sadhana were great. Infact Vijay sang Sahana with great confidence and he could easily reach that pitch (may be the pitch would have been as the original). But there were no other songs with Vijay as the main singer. ARR sang his songs with the power that I did not expect in a live concert.Though there were a few flaws like the below but that did not matter for me and I enjoyed the show very much. Hariharan was with his usual charm and improvisations. Chitra was ultimate not deviating her voice even a bit from the originals. 1) Sound engineering issues. The balance between instruments were not correct. For eg. Secret of success was too loud on the guitars and could hardly hear voices. 2) Mic issues like when ARR starts to sing his voice would sound less and then after recognizing that the sound engineers would adjust it. It happened quite a few times in various songs. 3) Timing/Tempo misses by singers like Madhusree in Vaaji, Naresh in Paathshala.But everything was corrected swiftly. 4) Miss of pitch/scale and quickly corrected in Sahana. (This may have been due to the over loudness of the pads (not drum pads) of the song which switched to different notes causing Chitra to slightly move away from the song and quickly she came to the correct notes) 5) Lyrics unavailability for Humma Humma. ARR sang only Na..Na ...da...da for the two stanzas of the song. Also lyric miss in Athiradee by ARR. Highlight June 2nd was declared ARR day in Oakland where the concert happened. [arr] Healthy/Constructive Feedback on SFO concert
Gopal, I have some feedback from the SFO concert. If everyone agrees, can we send this to ARR and the concert organizers? It would possibly enhance the future concerts. 1) Multilingual Songs : Lot of songs which exist in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu (Like for eg. Roja Janeman, Kehna Hai Kya, Chanda Re were original in Tamil) could have been sung in atleast two languages per song...one language per stanza. This used to happen with Hariharan and SPB earlier but not in this concertsince there were huge Tamil and Telugu audience, there were some disappointment on not singing a considerable no. of Tamil and Telugu even though there were original singers who sang them were present. Infact only Sivaji's songs were in Tamil and also Humma Humma beginning. No Telugu songs were played. 2) No Host :There was no host for the whole show in SFO. Though Blaaze did entertain or cheer up the crowd a couple of times and also did a very quick round of intros of the musicians, a full fledged host that would provide a brief intro between every song would have been great and Blaaze could have done it as well 3) Expose musicians better: There is excessive darkness and small focus lights moving rapidly around the stage. I have been noting this from the day when ARR started doing concerts. Also the musicians are not arranged to sit in a manner that the crowd can easily see them and note the instruments they play in each song during interludes etc. Atleast personally I feel when its a music concert the focus should be more on the musicians rather than dancers. While I understand the importance of the commercial element in the program with dancers and other colorful stuff, due importance for the musicians should also be given. For the sake of rapidly moving small lights, the focus on musicians playing the instruments in a good lighting and seating arrangements should not be compromised. This is my humble request as I am an admirer of musicians in the concert rather than the dancers. 4) On time : I understand all the singers, musicians are busy starts, but the concert should start on time as scheduled. Especially in the U.S. when foreigners are present there should not be a preception by the Americans that Indians are not punctual. I am not sure about other ARR concerts, but there was a 20 min delay (For me its ok I can wait for whatever time for ARR) in the SFO concert. And I also perfectly understand any unavoidable circumstances which is beyonf control. Healthy suggestions on whether this makes sense are welcome. Cheers! Prashanth - 8:00? 8:25? 8:40? hi... hey the link gives you a complete guide...anyway let me tell you the procedure 1.Firstly dl the 2 softwares DVD ripper:http://www.riphelp.net/downloads/smart-ripper.htmll AC3 Converter : http://mitglied.lycos.de/darkav/svcdguide/svcd.html (u have to dl some plugins for this software) i am providing the link to dl as well : http://d.turboupload.com/d/616658/BGM_RIpper.ace.html 2.Run the dvd ripper program directly ,no install required. 3.Select the chapters u want in the input menu 4.Go to the streams tab 5.Select only the audio ac3 stream 6. Select the demux to extra file 7.RIP NOW 8.now the audio file (ac3) will be stored in the specified location 9.Now run the other software i.e headac3h 10.Selct the ripped ac3 file in the source file 11.Select the destination file as desired 12.Check mp3 as ur o/p format 13.In 2 pass mode click float 14.Go to options 15.Selct the input channels as neccessaey (varies with different dvd)(usually left and right) 16 Selct the rigjt and lefty channels in o/p 17.Selct the stereo option in downmix type 18 Now click on options again 19 choose the CBR option of min 128kbps 20 Check all the deatils again 21 And StART. 22 After finishing u get the complete mp3 file 23 Use any Mp3 edit sofware and edit as and when req. and zip all the files into one file using winrar 24 AND FINALLY DONT FORGET TO UPLOAD IT ... thanks prASHANTH P.S - FIRST TRY WITH A SINGLE CHAPTER just me!
