Hi George, You wrote exactly what I have been thinking forever. 100% agree with you. Please read the mail I have sent to the group last friday. Take care, Serge. Hey Guys, This whole CWG theme songs fiasco has been really getting my blood boil. This is my 2cents worth. Here is a group of politicians who are known to be corrupt to the bone. I am generalizing here. I am an Indian living in Australia. I am proud of being Indian. BUT, I cannot stand the corruption that goes on in India. One of the main reasons for me to leave India was the corruption there. Not saying that there is no corruption anywhere else but there is so much of it in India and we all know it but no one does anything about it. It is great to see a hero in a movie killing all sorts of weeds in our government but in reality there is no one stopping the weeds entering the government The CWG anthem in absolutely brilliant. I loved it and can't get enough of it. The only reason for finding faults with A.R.Rahman is to divert the focus from the politicians corruption scandals. For the people who have a problem with the money paid to Rahman I am sorry he deserves every paise. There is no other musician who could have come up with a better compositions. That is the plain truth. This is really making my blood boil to a point where I feel like calling a press conference and putting thing forward to the bloody media and asking them the questions about where are their compositions and which one of them have had even 2 days of music lessons for them to make such claims and bring it out as headlines. If there was someone from this group who could help me voice our support and bring the corrupt politicians to the limelight I will be happy to support and will come back to my motherland India. India is a great country and would be even better if we had been governed by clean politicians. There are a few great, highly educated politicians who would make great leaders but they are all sidelined so that the greedy, uneducated scum could rule a great country only to drag it to their standards. I guess our politicians enjoyed the Shakira song only because of all the skin shown. Guess they were looking only at the video (I personally think they wouldn't have understood the lyrics.. hahaha) Sorry couldn't help putting that in! I really liked Wakka Wakka for the brilliant composition, the beats, rhythm and also the dance in the video was great! As I read in one of the topics Wakka wakka was made for the biggest sporting event in the world. It had to be publicized they it was. Another thing I wanted to point out was that, a 99% of these self proclaimed music critics said that the words of the CWG theme wasn't what they had expected, now what does the lyrics have to do with A.R.Rahman. If the words are not in sync with the event you criticize the lyricist and not the composer. I hope these self proclaimed music critics do know what the difference is between the lyrics and the music of a song. I am sorry for a lengthy email but I had to put all my feelings into words! Will India ever become a corrupt free country? Will there be a day when all the politicians will say that they don't accept bribes and actually be saying the truth? I hope we as a group can bring about this change and make A.R.Rahman sir be proud of fans like all of us. We are a group of 16231 members even if we just try and get a few people to change and create a domino effect we could change our great country and make it better than any other place in the world and be known for something great other than a land of call centers. Hope we can do this and make A.R.Rahman's and our dreams of a great India come true. God Bless you our A.R.Rahman sir and all of us his fans. TAKE CARE! RE: [arr] My blogpost on the CWG theme song
Hello Diya, it was nice to read your article, but there is one thing on which I don't agree. According to you, people who like this theme are ARR fans who like whatever music he composes, am I right? (even if I am wrong please continue your reading) I am a huge fan of ARR following his music since the beginning (Roja), whether it is now or in the 90s, I never liked every songs ARR had composed. This does not mean that the songs were not good, maybe somebody else liked it very much, it was only the fact that it was not my taste. So please don't underestimate ARR fans concluding that they likes everything he composes blindly just because they are mad fans. For example, I did not like Rukumani song from Roja, I did not like most of Kizhakku Chimayilae movie songs, Pettai Rap from Kadhalan was not my favorite as well, I did not like Mastam song from Yuvraaj, and many others... I never said that these songs were good. When somebody ask me who composed it? it is so bad!, It was uneasy for me to answer, that's all. Having said this, for me ARR remains the best musician in India in his domain (I like all kind of music except Rap style, you can not compare ARR with Zakir Hussain, L.Subramaniam, etc... ARR can not play like them and they can not compose like ARR) but in the cinefield area he is the Number 1. If this theme was used in a movie, maybe people would have said that it is good, but people say that the theme is not good in front of what it should have been according to their own expectation, their own conception of a theme that should represent India. Maybe they wanted something as usual with lots of noise as the Shakira one...Easy to do ! But, according to me, ARR vision for India were surely different, India being the country with lots of history, culture, respect and passion. A country where even today people respect the elders (respect the parents, the teachers, the Gods), a country which has many beliefs and values which is not the case in other countries. Did people expect a theme song with a indian woman dancing like shakira ? Remember, all songs or theme that ARR has composed for the Nation has always been deep and slow with lots of emotions (Taj Mahal promotional theme one love, Yeh Jo Desh song from Swades, except Vande Mataram). For example, none other instrument in the world can give you the touching feeling as the one of the Sitar sound. This sound can give you tears, it is really full of sentiments, even foreigners can connect with it. Sitar sound is the one which represent India to its best, did people expect a Ravi Shankar style music as a CWG Anthem, no I don't thing so. What about Yeh Jo Desh Hai Tera song from Swades which was a big hit, it is even slower comparing to the actual theme to represent the Games. Yes it is a very though challenge to compose one music that represent India, it is very easy to compose a song like the Shakira's one, but India has so many diversity that it is completely impossible. Taking into account all this, ARR Theme is the more appropriate one has it starts slowly which reflects the emotional part of Indians (every Indian is sensible, very sensible, indian culture is based on sensibilities and ARR is very sensible and emotional when it regards India) and then continue higher and higher progressively to end with Banghra sound fulfilling in this way the required energy representing the Games. I love the Theme, because it has a correct balance between every Indian actual values that are emotions, expectations, development (which recall history from sadness to joy), respect, belief, proudness and the wishes of success and establishment which is India's main force today. It is a very intelligent theme, each sound gives me so many feel. Sorry for my long comment, I could not stop when I write about India and ARR. Take care. RE: [arr] Lost Touch due to Tours and Live Programms
Thèse new members do not realize on who They are talking about. It sad to read such comments on ARR Sir, more than this Puli and Raavan songs are mindblowing. I have been on this group since 1999 and can not tolerate thé newcomers comments anymore. I am also very sad as thé concert in Paris has been cancelled, very very disapointed as I have bought jaiho circle ticket to be able to meet ARR Sir, all my Dreams sank when I got the bad news on tuesday about the cancelling of the 17th July concert in Paris. Last year summer I try to meet ARR in his house in Chennai when I went to India for holidays after 10 years of abscence but unluckily he was in the US, Again this year I couldn't meet him. Very sad, please ARR come to Paris ... I want to see you and talk to you once before I die. Please. With Hope from Serge. [arr] Raavan or Raavanan in Paris ?
Hello, I want to know if Raavan or Raavanan is out in theatre in Paris (France), if it is so can you please tell me which theatre? Thank you, Serge BELIER To: arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com From: catchg...@gmail.com Date: Fri, 18 Jun 2010 03:49:54 + Subject: [arr] Rediff reviews Raavan Raavan is Mani, Abhi, Ash's best work Tags : Raavan , Mani Ratnam , Ragini , Beera , Vikram June 18, 2010 Mani Ratnam's Raavan is an overwhelming film. At times a tad bit overproduced, the film is an onslaught of brilliant use of technology on the viewer's senses -- stunning cinematography, the fluidity of the camera, quick edits, loud soaring music, with the actors thrown into wild nature. Ratnam working with his regular cinematographer Santosh Sivan and also V Manikandan, and editor A Sreekar Prasad, gives us a hellish vision -- an innocent woman Ragini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan [ Images ]), kidnapped by a Veerappan-like outlaw, Beera (Abhishek Bachchan [ Images ]). Much of the film is the cat and mouse game -- Beera and his gang, in harmony with the forests, rain, rivers, cliffs, mountains and a lot of mud, always a few steps ahead of the police force led by an officer Dev Sharma (Vikram), who also happens to be Ragini's husband. Ratnam is one of the most remarkable filmmakers in India [ Images ], taking unique story ideas -- although some with muddled political messages, working within the framework of popular cinema, and yet creating memorable films in Tamil, Hindi and other languages. From the days when he used to shoot his films in one language (Roja [ Images ], Bombay and Dil Se) and then dub them for other markets, he has now moved to working simultaneously on two parallel productions. This time he shot Raavan in Hindi and Raavanan in Tamil -- shooting each scene back-to-back, with at least one actor interchanging roles. Vikram plays Dev in Raavan and then Veeraiya (Beera) in Raavanan, while Ash appears as Ragini in both films. He also has a third version -- Villain dubbed in Telugu. That is a lot of ambition for a soft-spoken 54-year-old man, who first attended business school before becoming a filmmaker. There is ambition written all over Raavan and at most times it succeeds. But it all happens at such speed that it takes a while to absorb the pace of Raavan. The film needs to be digested, absorbed and mulled over. The visual images are often so powerful and strong, each shot packed with so much activity -- rain, mud, trees, cliffs, and, of course, the actors, that many filmgoers will miss out on all that they see on the screen. I tried to get ahead of Ratnam and started counting the number of edit cuts during the grand dance performance to the song Thok di Killi, but soon I felt I was on a roller coaster ride, and had to stop to breathe. Raavan is Ratnam's interpretation of the Ramayana [ Images ] (yes, the rumours and speculations are true), with Bachchan, Ash and Vikram playing the roles of Ravana, Sita and Rama, respectively. And in one of the most brilliant strokes of casting, a delightful Govinda [ Images ] plays Sanjeevani -- a modern day Hanuman [ Images ], playfully hopping from one spot to another as he joins Dev's mission to search for his wife. The film is replete with references to the Ramayana -- from the 14 days it takes Dev to rescue his wife, to a disturbing take on the Soorpanaka story, which becomes the justification to the kidnapping of Ragini. But Ratnam takes Raavan beyond the Ramayana. I am not giving away the ending, but I wonder what the purists and Hindu fundamentalists will think about the departures of the film from the religious text. Ratnam gives us all shades of the three main characters. Beera is not always as evil as Ravana is often portrayed; Ragini's Sita has a strong inner core, and while she starts with hating Beera, she is sometimes in awe of his sudden spouts of gentleness; and Dev turns out to be the not so perfect Rama. I wish the script and the film in general, had not spent so much time in its technological grandeur, because the real crucial conversation around the Ramayana starts to happen near the end of the film. By this time Beera, Ragini and Dev have stopped being the traditional Ravana, Sita and Rama. That transition makes Raavan a significant milestone for modern India to move beyond the Ramayana as just a religious text. And so Raavan is perhaps Ratnam's most definite political film. Bachchan's best work to date has been with Ratnam in Yuva [ Images ] and Guru. But here the actor goes beyond anything he could have imagined he was capable of doing. Through the film he stands tall, observing his landscape, his face twitching with myriads of thoughts and his menacing smile unnerving all those who come in contact with him. Bachchan has never worked this hard in a film and it shows in his
[arr] Request to ARR Sir: Mausam Escape very important piece for Jai Ho Concert in Paris
Please ARR Sir, don't forget to perform Mausam Escape from SDM in Paris, this music is worth the Jai Ho Circle ticket price by itself. Guys, I don't know if you have watched to Jai Ho Sydney concert, let me tell you, that in my opinion the highlight of the show was when they played the music of Slumdog Millionaire Mausam Escape. It was brilliant, it is the kind of music that appeal to western audiences with full of improvisation. It brought such an energetic feel and boost the show to its extend. I am happy that indian people appreciate ARR Sir and that they come massively and numerously to see his concert, but in a certain way it is normal, because we know that ARR is the Best. What I want is that americans, europeans and all other foreigners living in France, Germany, US, ... come to see ARR concert and get surprised by his talent. Personnally, since I knew the concert date in Paris, I am promoting it at my level to all my surroundings (work collegues, french friends, neighboors, etc...), I have also made some promotion at my daugther school in which this year topics is about India, this was the occasion for me to play some ARR songs, to play some video clips of Jana Gana Mana (these were excellent video as it shows all indian instruments and for people who wants to know about indian music, it was the correct introduction and allow them to discover Mohan veena, veena, ghatam, sarod, santoor, table, mridangam, shenhai, bansuri flute, etc...). I was so proud this saturday to present indian music to french people and more especially JANA GAN MANA!!! For your information hereafter is the list of music and videos that I have played during this event. Music section, I played Jana Gana Mana (Flute version) Jana Gana Mana (sitar version) Jana Gana Mana (Collective version called Artists instrumental) Bombay Theme, Yeh jo desh Hai (Shenhai version), Pal pal from Swades (instrumental version), Azem O from Jodha Akbar, Mausan Escape (which had a great success), Etc... also figure in my list music from L.Subramaniam, Zakir Hussain, Naveen, Mozart meets India (various artist album) In the video section, I played: Jana Gana Mana (Flute version) Jana Gana Mana (sitar version) Jana Gana Mana (Collective version called Artists instrumental Azem O from Jodha Akbar, Ennuyire from Dil Se, Barso Re from Guru, and many more Unfortunately, the event last only 3 hours and was very short to present all the richness and beauty of India. Besides the music, with my wife, we also presented others subjects such as indian art (we brought some elephants, some jewels and other handycrafts that we bought in India last year in summer holidays), indian cuisine (children made Thali on this occasion with the help of the receipes we provided), indian sweets ans fruits (we brought some indian mangoes, goyaves (sorry I don't know the name in english, in tamil it is goyaka). I presented also to french children tamil alphabets (I brought the tamil LKG book and it was very useful as at the end I succeeded to hear french children saying Killi peasum, maadu paal kodukkum, etc... all this with perfect accent). Sorry for deriving from my initial topic, this event is still in my mind and I wanted to thank ARR Sir for feeding Indianism in NRI like me. Again I am proud of having used JANA GANA MANA in a french school to introduce indian music to french children, thanks ARR Sir!!! Finally, The beauty of Mausan Escape (of SDM), this mix between classical indian music and western one is for me the best performance I have ever seen in a concert. I hope and sincerely wish that this piece will be played in Paris on the 17th of July. I will be sitting in Jai Ho Circle in Paris concert and I hope I will be able to shake hand to ARR Sir and to tell him all my love and respect to the great indian he is in all aspects (my longtime dream). RE: [arr] Relationship with a new ARR album is like an arranged marriage!
Nice idea, but I don't like this comparison for the only reason that in arranged marriage and with our indian culture you don't have any other option than to force to love the person you married, to adjust things and to change yourself for suitability. Please be sure that I don't criticized our culture or arranged marriages, but I prefer love marriage. With love marriage you know who and what to expect, the exciting thing in arranged marriage can be the surprise fact, but it can also be a bad surprise and then it is too late. Being indian and a responsible human being, we can only continue to accept and force to love the person... Having said that, I don't like the comparison because when I listen to our boss new album, I never forced myself to like it. ARR songs are so excellent that even people who decided to criticize his songs end-up liking it. [arr] My favorite VTV Songs
My favorite VTV songs in the order of my preference are the following : Anbil Avan, Mannippaya, Hosanna, Kannukkul, VTV, Omane Penne, Aromale. I have mostly listen to Anbil Avan, Mannippaya, Hosanna and Kannukkul continuously since sunday morning. For me the best one is Anbil Avan. I agree when somebody said that Aromale is kind of irritating after repeated shouting of Aromale, it is pure experimentation song by our boss the music is good but personnaly I did not like the voice of the singer. Hi Serge I am very sure, you would make it meet and talk to ARRji very soon. I am so sure about this b'cos I have a same feeling for ARRji like you have, even I travelled to several places to meet and talk to ARRji. I had been to calicut from Hyderabad only and only to meet ARRji and ofcourse to enjoy the concert, but I returned without talking to him. I think god heard my prayers and finally I met ARRji in chennai for audio release of 'Oh la la la' album and I interacted for may a minute or so and got his autograph. Those movements are very fresh in my mind and still remember the anxiety and feeling I had when I touched him and asked him for his autograph. I sometimes feel ONE SHOULD LIVE HIS LIFE LIKE ARRji being loved by so many people and follow his foot steps. To: arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com Date: Wednesday, 16 September, 2009, 7:32 PM After 9 years of absence, I went back to India this summer, I was very excited to rediscover my mother land and also to be able to visit ARR Sir if lucky. I had a very nice holiday as I visit Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur during 10 days and then I went to Pondicherry where I lived till my 18 years old age. During all these holidays I was haunted by one thing, I was wishing to meet ARR Sir everywhere, in the Airport, the Restaurant, the Hotels My holidays in Pondicherry went very well but I was eagerly waiting for the day I planned to go to Chennai. In fact, I went to Chennai just to try to meet ARR Sir. So I went there with my wife and children on the 25th of August morning. I was very very happy to find ARR Sir house after asking to some people on the street. When I stopped in front of his house (which was beautifull), I was very stressed, very excited and scared too. But I was unlucky, because the watchman told me that ARR Sir was out of town, the watchman gave me his manager phone number I called him to know if ARR SIr will be back soon, but he said that he was out of town for a long time. I was very sad, I took some picture of ARR Sir house and studio (which is just behind his house) and went back to Pondy very disappointed. I wish I will meet him one day (I have seen him in London Live concert in 2005, but did not have the chance to talk to him), I need to talk to him, because I have to tell him how important is his music and his thoughts for me (thoughts that I have interpretated according to everything he does like help for the poor, love for the people, down to earth, care for his country, ). I try to take him as an example for every steps I make in my life. I have had very difficult trouble in my life, I can tell you that only his music help me to survive. I honestly think about him when I have serious problems and I got a kind of relief when I listen to him, it gives me strenght. I love you ARR sir, if you come to France I would love to meet you. (hope you will read my mail) By the way, my favorite tracks in Blue (in the order I like them) Fiqraana, Aj Dil, Bhola Tujhe, Blue them, Chiggy Wiggy, Rehnuma, and the last one. I like all the tracks, each one of them have different style. Maybe the last song is not up to the style and standards of the other songs, but is still good if you hear it independantly. Maybe this track should have been used for a different movie. Talking about sound quality of the Cd, I agree that the sound clearness is not very evident, I have managed to have it clear by reducing the bass level of my system, lowering the volume a little bit.In this way, you will be able to hear all the different instruments contribution and you will hear the nice melodies hidden behind each sound for each songs. This album will definetely grow on you, everytime I listen to it I notice a new sound. This is quite a complex sound that ARR sir has put on the songs, again he has revolutionized the songs format which seems strange today but tomorrow it will be normal (just take the example of Rukkumani song in Roja). For people who did not like the songs, I think they listen to it with very high volume and thus did not notice the multiple nuances of sound that each songs has. It is also possible that the songs being very complex, it takes time and several listening to understand its architecture. According to me, we like a song because we are familiar to the tune.
