Happy to see that some respect is given to ARR by the politicians. Really
felt bad how the politicians behaved when ARR was in Kerala.

[arr] SdM to be screened in Parliment..Rahman, Resul and Gulzar to be felicitated

2009-07-23 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $

Jai Ho to be screened in LS

Saubhadro Chatterji / New Delhi July 24, 2009, 0:54 IST

After the Budget, it’ll be time for some Bollywood entertainment in Parliament.
The Lok Sabha secretariat has arranged for a special screening of Danny Boyle’s
highly-acclaimed film, Slumdog Millionaire, on August 3 for the MPs.

But the icing in the cake will be the presence of its Oscar winners—music
director A R Rahman, lyricist Gulzar and sound engineer Resul Pookutty—at the
special screening. This will be the first time when Rahman and the two other
Oscar winners will be felicitated by Parliament for their achievement. The
three had won the much-coveted US Oscar awards on February 23. The Congress,
meanwhile, had used Rahman’s award winning tune, Jai Ho, as its campaign song
during the run-up to the Lok Sabha election.
“As per the information available to us, A R Rehman and Resul Pukutty will be
present during the special screening in Parliament. We are inviting Gulzaarsaab
too,” Lok Sabha secretary-general P D T Achary told Business Standard on
Thursday.”We will felicitate them before the film is screened.”
It was actually Pookutty’s idea to bring the Oscar winners to Parliament. When
Achary contacted Pookutty, currently stationed in the US, about the
secretariat’s plan to show the film for the Parliamentarians, Pookutty
suggested bringing Rahman there. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Lok Sabha
Speaker Meira Kumar and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi are expected to be present
at the function.
The Lok Sabha secretariat had shown films for the MPs earlier as well but this
will be the first time when a commercial film will be screened because of its
worldwide fame. Last year, the secretariat screened Shyam Benegal’s Bose: the
forgotten Hero for the MPs. Benegal is currently a nominated MP of the Rajya
Sabha.
Earlier, stalwarts like Lata Mangeshkar (then a Rajya Sabha member) had
performed at the special programme held on 50 years of Indian independence in
1997. A few years ago, shehnai maestro Bismillah Khan was also felicitated by
the Parliament.
Will Rahman perform like Khan or Mangeshkar? Achary doesn’t see much hope: “He
is not coming with his musical troop. We can’t ask him to sing just like that.”

ATM was also by ARR. By original Score, it means, not inspired or copied from
anywhere.

The Title tracks in ATM is little bit different from this track, as this has
voices with Palakkad Sriram and Madhumitha.

Nothing to worry bro.. . Jai Ho. Enjoy.

Check out the winners for previous years then. Lots of composers ( like
James Horner, John Williams) have used parts of their previous works in the
winning ones. Ofcourse not used the same ones exactly.

More people are going to the movies despite the bad economy -- or because of
it.

Domestic theater admissions were up an unheard of 9.3% in January and
February, usually one of the slowest times of the year.

In North America, revenues are up 13% for the first two months of 2009,
clocking in at $1.62 billion through Tuesday, according to Rentrak.

Admissions also are on the rise overseas. However, the vagaries of currency
exchange, including a stronger dollar, are hurting Hollywood.

The six major studios have seen a decline of more than 10% in revenues from
foreign markets for the first two months of the year.

The value of the euro is off 20% compared with a year ago and the British
pound has declined more than 35%. But, overall, international moviegoing
remains decent in terms of local admissions and currency compared with a
year ago.

Back home, admissions are often down even when revenues are up, thanks to
increased ticket prices. This year's spike in actual foot traffic bucks that
trend.

This weekend, observers will be watching to see if Disney's new entry "Jonas
Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience" continues the box office boom.

That boom has seen several notable films beating expectations and racking up
sizeable grosses. Last
weekend,Lionsgate's
"Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail" opened to $41 million, the best bow of
any Perry pic, as well as any Lionsgate release.

Three films -- Warners' "Gran Torino," Sony's "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" and Fox
Searchlight's Oscar winner "Slumdog
Millionaire"
--
have all crossed the $100 million mark this year.

"Torino's" cume through Tuesday was $135.5 million; "Mall Cop's," $122.2
million; and "Slumdog's," $101.9 million.

On Friday, Searchlight expands "Slumdog" to 2,943 theaters in the wake of
the film's Oscar wins. It's the widest release in Searchlight's history.

It's been a good winter for the Fox family. The big studio's sleeper hit
"Taken," with a gross
of $96.5 million, should jump the $100 million mark by Sunday.

Distribs say they've never seen so many January and February films do this
kind of business.

There have been casualties, however.

Disney's "Confessions of a
Shopaholic,"
produced
by Jerry
Bruckheimer,
hasn't caught on. The Isla
Fisherstarrer
has grossed $28.3 million since its Feb. 13 release, compared with a cume of
$71.4 million for New Line/Warner Bros.' "He's Just Not That Into You,"
which opened one week earlier.

Sony's suspense drama "The
International," released
the same day as
"Confessions,"

done even less business, cuming $17.8 million through Tuesday. Studio said
the film could have a strong run overseas. Pic launches this weekend in
Russia, South Korea, the U.K. and more than a dozen other markets. It's
cumed $5.5 million from a limited launch so far in seven markets, mostly
from Germany.

things have bee been sane here. its an undeniable truth and fact that we
have been mocking the west for almost everything in our day to day
life. everyone's intention is to achieve the best and ARR has achieved it.
it took decades for India to get introduced to the "sound" of music and
later came ARR to reveal that sound and energy to our motherland with his
unique flavor and creativity. by that time, that "sound"was already decades
old in the west.

Cool link! There's a stark difference between how it's covered in the
newspapers (not the tabloids) abroad and in India. The former is quite
sensible. The latter is pure hysterical.
TimesOfIndia takes the cheese cake-- "India breaks sound barrier" and the even
cheesier "OscAR Rahman: Raja of Roja now rules the O-zone layer". If you ever
needed proof that TOI is a tabloid masquerading as a newspaper, there you have
it.
It's certainly a laudable achievement for many involved in the project. By all
means give them their recognition. But also put things in perspective. There
are so many problems plaguing India. It's just insane to forget about all that
and devote an entire front page to the Oscar win. Are we such a nation of poor
achievers that even a win for some from the entertainment industry gets such a
massive celebration? I find it weird.

Shekhar Kapur said it well-

"So why don't I see that the West celebrates when one of their artists becomes
popular here in India ? Why don't we see headlines in the LA times then ? ...
Why do we admire the West so much. Even in my career I thought that Bandit
Queen was a far far better film, a more heartfelt film, and a much more
meaningful film than Elizabeth or any of the other films I made in the West.
But in India I was suddenly celebrated as a film maker after Elizabeth. I even
was awarded a Padma Shree after that film. Why ? Because the film was nominated
for 7 Oscars, and Bandit Queen was not. When will we stop being aspirational
towards the West ?"

And already the clamoring for a Bharat Ratna has begun! Keep things sane and in

*Slumdog* gang in Hollywood

http://www.telegraphindia.com/1090222/jsp/frontpage/story_10573807.jsp

Shortly afterwards, we will know whether A.R. Rahman has done it, and
whether Ashok Amritraj's prediction to The Telegraph — "*Slumdog* will
sweep" — has indeed come to pass.

Slumdog Millionaire hot favourite at Oscars

http://www.hindu.com/2009/02/22/stories/2009022259630100.htm

"It would be the biggest upset in modern Oscars history to see *Slumdog
Millionaire* lose," said Pete Hammond, an awards season expert and Hollywood
film critic.

Music maestro A.R. Rahman, who has three nominations for *Slumdog
Millionaire*, was in Los Angeles preparing to perform at the ceremony. He
said "it would be a great honour" although he did not think the awards were
"a referendum on Bollywood." He did not have an acceptance speech ready and
was concentrating on a performance of "Jai Ho," the lilting song from the
film, for U.S. television.

Danny Boyle's very good year, Slumdog's worldwide appeal

http://www.monstersandcritics.com/people/news/article_1460827.php/Danny_Boyles_very_good_year_Slumdogs_worldwide_appeal

After the wins from the Golden Globe Awards and BAFTA for the Indian
composer A.R. Rahman, ABC news reveals that India is intently watching the
outcome of the Sunday broadcast of the Academy Awards, noting the bookies in
Mumbai have given favorable odds to the film to take Best Director, Best
Motion Picture and Best Music.

Rahman is one of the most prolific film composers in India, and he has three
Oscar nominations for "Slumdog Millionaire."

The film itself has scored ten total nominations for the Academy awards
which include a Best Achievement in Cinematography nomination for Anthony
Dod Mantle; a Best Achievement in Directing for Danny Boyle; a Best
Achievement in Editing
for Chris Dickens; a Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures,
Original Score for A.R. Rahman; aBest Achievement in Music Written for
Motion Pictures, Original Song also for A.R. Rahman, Maya Arulpragasam for
the song "O Saya"; a
Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Song for
A.R. Rahman (music) -Sampooran Singh Gulzar (lyrics) for the song "Jai Ho";
a Best Achievement in Sound for Ian Tapp, Richard Pryke and Resul Pookutty;
a Best Achievement in Sound Editing for Tom Sayers and Glenn Freemantle; a
Best Motion Picture of the Year for Christian Colson; and a Best Writing,
Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published for Simon
Beaufoy.

See the movie, do the dance, it's a Bolly boom

http://www.theage.com.au/news/entertainment/film/see-the-movie-do-the-dance-its-a-bolly-boom/2009/02/21/1234633133011.html

The feel-good sequence and the infectious rhythm of its song, *Jai Ho* —
tipped to win the best song Oscar for composer A.R. Rahman — is creating
something of a boom for Melbourne's Bollywood dance schools. Marshie Perera
Rajakumar, from the Jhoom-Bollywood Dance Company, last week recorded her
biggest class numbers since opening in 2005.

"I had close to 35 in my beginner class and about 80 people altogether for
the week, which is huge," she says. "*Slumdog Millionaire* has definitely
created more awareness of Bollywood dancing even though it's not actually a
Bollywood movie. The end sequence is just a great advertisement for
Bollywood dancing."

Do the Slumdog

http://www.theage.com.au/news/entertainment/film/do-the-slumdog/2009/02/19/1234632973920.html

He might not be a household name around these parts but *Slumdog
Millionaire's* composer, A.R. Rahman, is up there with Madonna, Bob Marley
and the *Rolling Stones* when it comes to album sales. What sets him aside,
perhaps, is the fact that he's sold twice as many cassettes as CDs - younger
readers might be wondering what a cassette even is.

But in music-mad India, Rahman is number one.

No one's better qualified to introduce Bollywood music to the Western
charts.

Two of the three songs nominated for this year's best song Oscar were penned
by Rahman for*Slumdog* and compared to the only other contender - Peter
Gabriel's cutesy-but-disposable *WALLlE*theme, *Down to Earth* - it's a good
bet that Rahman will take home the gold.

Rahman's style combines classical Indian arrangements and influences from
across the globe (Jai Ho is interrupted by a pulsing Latino section, for
instance). The composer has even re-recorded the song with the Pussycat
Dolls, but with any luck it will be the original we hear at tomorrow's
Academy Awards. And it's more than likely that *Slumdog's*festive closing
sequence will be re-created live on stage. Especially as Gabriel threw a
tanty and refuses to perform his song at the ceremony.

he country's residents are betting big on the success of"Slumdog

Hmm how about this article -

'Slumdog Millionare' poised to gross Rs.300 mn in India

Mumbai, Feb 7 (IANS) Oscar contender Slumdog Millionaire, which has
received global critical acclaim and become a worldwide box-office
success, has raked in Rs.215 million since its Jan 23 release in India
and is expected to gross about Rs.300 million."We expect Slumdog
Millionaire to make about Rs.300 million in India. Considering the
fact that it is not one of the formula films, its box-office
performance in India so far is really gratifying. Frankly, it was
beyond our expectations, " Vijay Singh, CEO of Fox Star Studios that
brought the film to India, told IANS.

The money made by the film in India is nearly four percent of its
worldwide collection of Rs.5.30 billion.

Fox Star has released both the English and Hindi versions of Slumdog
Millionaire in India. Expectedly, the Hindi version, "Slumdog
Crorepati" has fared better at the box-office, contributing 30 percent
more to the distributor' s kitty.

"The Hindi version is doing better business in the smaller centres. In
fact, we had to increase the number of prints of the Hindi version in
the second week of its run following the public demand in those
centres," Singh said.

"Slumdog Millionare" opened with Rs.135 million overall and its per
print earnings in second week stood at Rs.592,000 in an average, which
is excellent for a film of its genre when taken into account that as
many 363 prints of the film were in circulation in the second week of
its run in India.

Although the number of prints has been reduced to 350 in the third
week, according to Singh, multiplexes in some cities have increased
the number of shows to cater to the demand.

The heart-warming story of a poor boy from the slums of Mumbai who
goes on to win the Indian version of TV game show "Who Wants To Be A
Millionaire" has won top prizes from the Directors Guild of America,
Screen Actors Guild and Producers Guild of America, as also the Golden
Globes and Critics' Choice Awards.

The film by British Director Danny Boyle is also leading in the Oscar
race with 10 nominations.

Shemaroo pockets Slumdog home video rights for Rs 15 mn
Story By: ROHINI BHANDARI updated on: 07/02/09

MUMBAI: Shemaroo Entertainment has acquired the home video rights of Fox Star
Studios' Slumdog

Millionaire and Slumdog Crorepati for Rs 15 million (Rs 1.50 crores).

When contacted by Businessofcinema. com, Shemaroo Entertainment director Hiren
Gada refused to
confirm the development. Fox Star Studios officials also remained unavailable
for comment at

the time of filing this story. However, sources inform that the deal is in its
final stages of
being signed.

The home video will be launched in India by Shemaroo on 31 March, 2009 to
coincide with the
movie's worldwide release on home video.

A source close to the development says, "Since Slumdog Millionaire has been
heavily pirated its
official home video will be packaged with value added content in order to lure
customers into
buying it. The content will have to be packaged and marketed very
intelligently. This movie is

a collector's item."

As was first reported by Businessofcinema. com, the satellite rights of the
Danny Boyle directed
movie, were acquired by Sony Max (Slumdog Crorepati) and Sony Pix (Slumdog
Millionaire) for

approximately Rs 40 - 50 million (Rs 4 -5 crores).

Shemaroo pockets Slumdog home video rights for Rs 15 mn
Story By: ROHINI BHANDARI updated on: 07/02/09

MUMBAI: Shemaroo Entertainment has acquired the home video rights of Fox Star
Studios' Slumdog
Millionaire and Slumdog Crorepati for Rs 15 million (Rs 1.50 crores).

When contacted by Businessofcinema.com, Shemaroo Entertainment director Hiren
Gada refused to
confirm the development. Fox Star Studios officials also remained unavailable
for comment at
the time of filing this story. However, sources inform that the deal is in its
final stages of
being signed.

The home video will be launched in India by Shemaroo on 31 March, 2009 to
coincide with the
movie's worldwide release on home video.

A source close to the development says, "Since Slumdog Millionaire has been
heavily pirated its
official home video will be packaged with value added content in order to lure
customers into
buying it. The content will have to be packaged and marketed very
intelligently. This movie is
a collector's item."

As was first reported by Businessofcinema.com, the satellite rights of the
Danny Boyle directed
movie, were acquired by Sony Max (Slumdog Crorepati) and Sony Pix (Slumdog
Millionaire) for
approximately Rs 40 - 50 million (Rs 4 -5 crores).

[arr] SdM to release in Tamil on Feb 14th

2009-02-04 Thread Sreekrishnan R
Gops, Vijay Bros. kindly throw some light.. Do we get Tamil 'Jai Ho' ?

Slumdog Millionaire, which has been nominated for several Oscar
awards, is ready to speak in Tamil. Directed by Danny Boyle with
musical score by A R Rahman, the Tamil version is titled 'Nanum
Koteeswaran'.

It is being produced by K Natarajan of Falcon
Films. Interestingly, actor Silambarasan has dubbed the voice for Dev
Patel, who played the hero, while noted playback singer S P
Balasubramaniam has given the voice for AnilKapoor and actor Radha Ravi
for Irfan Khan.

The film will be released on 14th February. On
dubbing for the movie, Silambarasan said, ' I saw the film three times
last week. The screenplay, music and the romance between the lead pair
looks marvelous on screen. I am so proud to be a part of such a
landmark film which dominated the prestigious Golden Globe awards and
ready to pick several Oscar awards'.

[arr] [SDM Review] Jai who and how?

2009-01-23 Thread satish_srini
By Mayank Shekhar
Posted On Saturday, January 24, 2009 at 02:20:44 AM

FILM: Slumdog Millionaire
DIRECTOR: Danny Boyle
ACTORS: Dev Patel, Freida Pinto,Anil Kapoor, Irrfan Khan
RATING: * * * 1/2

The rating is immaterial in this case. You may as well add or take
away a couple of stars. I'm certain you will watch the film anyway. So
you must.

Few films have staked a claim to the Oscars right from their early
reviews in the American press. By the time of its belated Indian
release, three months after, Slumdog's place in history cannot be
contested. If anything, its greatness opens for us a lively discussion.

First off, yes, this is a film made primarily for the West. The Indian
audience is merely a healthy bonus for its producers, coming from the
rare Oscars and Globes' acclaim.

This becomes quite clear right from the first scene where a young Dev
Patel is whip-lashed at a dingy police station. He expresses pain in
English with a fair British twang. Mainstream English-speaking
film-goers across the world rarely watch movies either dubbed or
sub-titled. An American studio was unlikely to fund a film in any
other language.

So much otherwise was falling into place for them. Who Wants To Be
Millionaire, the quiz show the film is centred on, was a top-rated
programme both on Indian and British/American television. Since Suketu
Mehta's Maximum City or Arvind Adiga's White Tiger or the `India
Shining' story, or even the recent terror attacks, Mumbai has been a
subject of strong western interest.

Local language may appear a minor matter. It takes on other meanings
in this country. English is the firmest Indian marker for social
mobility, much more than caste or class or religion. To an Indian
audience, a slum-boy with such impeccable command over Queen's English
is less likely to be a chaiwallah at a call-centre. He is more likely
to be an entry-level executive in the same office.

The boy bears a Muslim name Jamal Malik. In Vikas Swarup's book Q&A,
the slum-boy is a secular Ram Mohamed Thomas. The relation between the
said book and Simon Beaufoy's aromatic screenplay, I am told, is
merely functional.

Irrfan Khan, who plays a senior inspector interrogating the boy, tells
him, "Money and women are two reasons to make mistakes in life. Looks
like you're mixed up with both." He is.

By a strange coincidence, Jamal is a round away from Rs 20 million on
Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. No one can fathom the source of his
knowledge. Anil Kapoor plays the host, and his is the least explained
character. I can't fathom why he can't stand the slum-boy's success
either. The leaps of faith are gigantic. On his part, the director
throws in a song-and-dance at the end to explain the emotional picture
experience Bollywood films are meant to be.

Jamal's life, on the other hand, has been an expedition in search of
his childhood sweetheart. His furious adventures take him from the
slums to a ruthless beggar home, among hoods in Agra, and back at a
road-side restaurant in Mumbai. He is most convincing as a little
child (Ayush Khedekar) who loses his mother to the `92 Hindu-Muslim riots.

Sure, the film is an expression of poverty and crime and racial and
class divides that rich, insular Indians shy away from discussing too
often. They feel unfairly clubbed with millions of Indian-poor when
such books or films become popular abroad. There is fair exaggeration.

Yet, it'd be unfair to sense any western bias. If anything, Slumdog is
a far more entertaining film than last year's Italian Cannes-winner
Gomorra, set in the slums or ghettos of Naples.

The reason we may love this film is possibly because of Danny Boyle
alone. Boyle (Beach, Trainspotting) treats the screenplay to the same
technical chops and mastery over movie-making that you expect from the
finest in the world. The visual experience is neatly exhilarating;
almost every shot a series of stills worth being framed forever.

The setting is still familiar, though the hopeful and humane eyes are
an outsider's. Rio has its City Of God; Johannesburg, its Tsotsi. This
is the closest Mumbai has reached there since Satya (1998). So what if
it took Boyle to do it.

It is no one's fault, least of all the West's, that the most acclaimed
"realistic filmmaker" in Bollywood working on similar themes is Madhur
Bhandarkar.

On the other hand, the American Academy awards are still a wistful dream, and
considered the ultimate arbiters of excellence here. And what makes Slumdog
Milionaire especially complicated is the hybrid nature of it. Based on an
Indian novel, shot in India with real slum kids, set to A.R. Rahman's music,
featuring Bollywood vets Irfan Khan and Anil Kapoor in important roles, it
confounds the usual cultural categories and expectations. This peculiar
insider-outsider dynamic makes Basu's “it's just a Danny Boyle movie” logic a
hard sell here, even as it ensures India's emotional investment in the film.

Simple story of hope is told with mod style in 'Slumdog'

Is "Slumdog Millionaire" the top movie of 2008? Well, you can debate its Golden
Globe for best picture, but it's certainly among the finest features of the
year.

On one hand, it's a gritty, unsentimental look at the modern India, a dizzying
combination of slums, call centers and its own version of Silicon Valley, where
rich and poor jostle each other, sometimes brutally. At the same time, it's a
sweet-tempered, boy-meets-girl romance in which miracles can happen,
occasionally at least, and the good guys can wind up on top.
Irish-British director Danny Boyle started his career dark and edgy with the
black comedies "Shallow Grave" (1995) and "Trainspotting" (1996), the latter
his quirkily cheery portrait of drug-zonked Scottish slackers. (Those two
pictures together launched the international career of Ewan McGregor.)
Boyle still has that dark streak; his top-grossing picture to date is probably
his zombies-attack yarn "28 Days Later" (2002). More recently, though, as in
his 2004 comedy "Millions", he's seemed willing to entertain his inner Capra.
These two sides of his personality come together most brilliantly in "Slumdog."
Boyle has detoured into the Third World before, most notably with "The Beach"
(2001), in which Leonardo DiCaprio, Tilda Swinton and a pack of other Western
hippies try to find Eden on an island off Thailand. (Like most Edens, of
course, it's just a temporary paradise.)
With "Slumdog," Boyle moves on to modern-day Mumbai (the city we used to call
Bombay), with a detour to Agra, the home of the Taj Mahal.
Based on the novel "Q & A" by Indian writer Vikas Swarup and adapted by
screenwriter Simon Beaufoy ("The Full Monty"), "Slumdog" begins, like many
Boyle movies, in the middle - right on the set of India's version of the game
show "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?"
Jamal Malik (Dev Patel), a gofer who delivers tea to the employees in a Mumbai
phone center - where Hindustani workers pretend to be "Chad" and "Vicky" for
customers half a world away - is just one question away from the jackpot.
It's almost too good to be true. So, in an abrupt jump-cut, Jamal is dragged to
a local police station, where officers are giving him an Abu Ghraib-class
third-degree.
Not even college professors can make it past the first few answers, the
inspector says. How can a slumdog like Jamal wind up the champ - unless he's
cheating?
Tired, disaffected, Jamal proceeds to tell his story - how he and his older
brother Salim grew up in the Mumbai slums.
Jamal, it seems, was always the dreamer, chasing after the autographs of the
"Bollywood" action stars. Salim was the realist, the hustler, who stole Jamal's
precious mementoes and sold them off for a few rupees.
Raised Muslim, Jamal and Salim were left orphaned by the bitter riots that
occasionally break out when Hindu extremists attack Mumbai's Islamic
neighborhoods. (Opening just as Mumbai was struck by bloody terror attacks,
"Slumdog" gives a sad background to why that slaughter happened.)
The two boys wind up as street beggars under a bizarre Pied Piper who seems
part Fagin, part Michael Jackson. Escaping from that life, they wind up as
underground tour guides for American tourists seeking the "real" India.
Salim slips into the life of a gangster, working for a crime lord in their old
neighborhood. Jamal still carries a torch for Latika, the little girl he loved
as a child and still yearns to find again.
The story cuts back and forth between Jamal's childhood and the police station,
showing just how a street kid would learn who invented the revolver or whose
picture appears on the U.S. $100 bill.
It's a surprisingly old-fashioned story, but Boyle tells it briskly in mod
style, with music video-style camera angles and editing and a catchy
world-music soundtrack that ought to become a best seller. A.R. Rahman's Golden
Globe for best original score is well-deserved indeed.
The whole business ends up with a Bollywood-style musical number in a Mumbai
train station, which "Entertainment Weekly" found corny, but which seems to
work. Even the worst hell on Earth can be bearable, it seems, as long as one
can dream of something better - and try to make it real.

Great win for ARR and SdM.

But remember, it isnt over till the fat lady sings..And she is
singing only on March 22nd ;-), THE BIG DAY..when The Oscars will be
announced.

There is still long way to go for SdM.
Coming up are the various guild awards which are extremely important
as most of those guys are Academy members having voting rights.
Its extremely important for the movie to sustain its momentum till
the Oscar night.

Important dates

Producers Guild - 24 Jan
Screen Actors Guild - 25 Jan
Directors Guild - 31 Jan
Writers Guild - 7 Feb

Another interesting trivia, tad disappointing to SdM fans - Last 4
consecutive years, the Best Picture winner at Golden Globes missed
the bus at 0scars - Atonement (2007), Babel (2006), Brokeback
Mountain (2005), The Aviator (2004).

Hope SdM will rewrite Oscar history.

-- Credit should also be given to A.R. Rahman’s fantastic background score,
which adds intensity to the richness of the visuals.

-- I wondered just where director Danny Boyle found such talented child actors.
It turns out that the child actors are actually from the slums, and the
producers have cleverly built into the children’s monetary compensation the
precondition that they must complete their schooling until age 16. Kudos to the
team for doing their part to better the lives of this precocious bunch.

[arr] SDM: Why they opted for Choli Ke Peeche instead of new song

2009-01-04 Thread V S Rawat
The possible explanation for them having opted for a version of Choli Ke
Peechhe re-done as Ringa-Ringa instead of an original number by ARR is:-

In the film two guys go to a brothel in Mumbai (Faras Road?) where
innumerable sex workers are lined up seeking and cajoling clients. These
prostitutes are also singing and dancing in the scene.

It is a trend that such girls and ladies sing and dance on popular,
catchy songs. So, that could be the reason that, in order to get a real
life feel to the scene, the producer/ director opted for the popular and
catchy Choli Ke Peechhey, instead of having a new number.

His last 3 films before SdM were all composed by John Murphy so it
looks like he has a good relationship with him.

On a related note I've just finished seeing Danny's 2004 movie-- Millions. It's
simply delightful! It's amazing how versatile he's been by tackling various
genres. I like his choice of music whether it's the general feel of the score,
or the (pre-existing) songs included within. The score & soundtrack to Millions
are beautiful.

One question comes to the mind after all this awards n accolades for SDM
Will Danny want to keep on working with ARR in the future? I sure wish he
would... coz all of his movies are so different from each other... a science
fiction, a child fantasy, a horror-thriller & I donno in what genre
Trainspotting fits in... but the point is that it'll be just perfect for ARR to
unleash his unlimited creativity if he does end up doing 3-4 movies with Danny
in future... all very very different from one another... wow... just imagining
about it is giving me goosebumps.. .

[arr] SDM...eventually!

2008-12-28 Thread divyaishu
Hi all,

I always seem to be lagging behind you guys when it comes to hearing
the latest of ARR's compositions...for instance I have been reading
about SDM for a quite sometime now and have been reading about it on
this forum too but it is only today (being a Sunday) I took time out
and listened to the SDM songs now.

Work of the genius comes in again. Jai Ho seems to be my favourite. O
Saya is good too. What really amused me was Ringa Ringa :) I kept
smiling throughout as I listened to Ringa Ringa. Well made. The music
is striking, really and instantly.

ARR, you must be up to grab the Oscar now!

SDM is a must see movie. I enjoyed the movie thoroughly. It has been
released in Sydeny in selected cinemas. A very clever plot sequenced
perfectly. The portayal of slum life may a bit overdone and may hurt
indians a bit, but that is needed for the story anyway.

I liked the last bit in the Sydney Morning Herald review that goes
"It is a saga that Dickens could have witten yet it's so thoroughly
infused with the vitality, the horror and the gallows humour of
Indian life on the edge that melodrama becomes dirty realism - with a
flourish. Offering a final salute to the spirit of Bollywood, Boyle
goes out with a song-and-dance number. And he makes it work"

Also, I saw Fareed Zakaria(CNN GPS) mentioning SDM in his show. Also read it in
Time Magazine.

Watched the movie today. Liked it a lot. I think this is the first time where
an Hollywood movie is made in a true Indian Movie style. Loved when people sat
for the entire song (Jai Ho) at the end.

Very good screenplay. Strongly recommended for good movie lovers

SDM is on strong promotional activities here in the US.

I saw the SDM trailers during the 9'O Clock Larry King Live and 10 PM : AC 360,
in CNN, both prime time programs claimed as the most watched National News
Channel programs in the US. Its the highest point of advertisement you can do
here on TV to my knowledge. FYI, Obama and McCain had a rush competition to
claim time during these hours from CNN in their final campaign days. So you
know how important these Prime Times are. And getting your ad at the time is
too costly.

Most part of the TV ad had, the important awards / nominations / Critics'
comments that SDM got.

Also the next day in the local news paper, i saw ads of SDM. Again, it would
have a  good reach because, all the Metro rail commuters to Washington DC is
given a free local news paper as we enter the station in the morning.

Let's keep praying for the Oscar nominations!

Rarely, if ever, does the Western world catch a glimpse into the beauty and
majesty of such a dynamic city as Mumbai. Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire"
hits the ground running. This is a breathless, exciting story, heartbreaking
and exhilarating at the same time.
Simon Beautoy’s script, based on Vikas Swarup’s novel, “Q&A,” touches on the
life of Jamal Malik (Dev Patel), an impoverished orphan raised in the slums of
Mumbai, who unexpectedly reaches the Rs. 20 Million question on India’s version
of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. Accused of cheating, he defends himself
against the authorities by narrating his life on the streets - a sequence of
mesmerizing tales which hold the key to all his right answers.
The film stars newcomer Dev Patel and model turned actress Freida Pinto along
with Anil Kapoor and Irfan Khan. A.R Rahman provides the music and boy it is
sensational.
Rahman lifts off with O…Saya, a song that is, much like the rest of the
soundtrack, an electrifying detonation of sound and style. Filled with some
riveting electronic tones, Rahman ups the tempo with a breath-taking drumming
performance that features throughout the backdrops of this flashy and rhythmic
track. Also featuring international biggie M.I.A this song takes the cake.
Ringa Ringa brings a slight touch of familiarity to his Indian listeners, the
track bears resemblance to the early 90s cult-classic “Choli Ke Peeche”. Rahman
infuses the number with a sultry blend of old and new elements, couples it with
an alluring melody, and ultimately creates a unique sound that is both
traditional and progressive simultaneously. Alka Yagnik's vocals and Raqib
Alam’s lyrics culminate the musical trinity of the track with class.
Next up is the absolutely gorgeous Dreams On Fire, and just like all the other
pieces of Slumdog Millionaire, Rahman has provided a steady blend of east and
west – a phenomenon that gives the music its universal textures and borderless
emotions. Blaaze and Wendy Parr provide awe inspiring lyrics and Suzanne
D’Mello's vocals grab your heart's cockles.
Jai Ho is an out-and-out dance track and passes with flying colors thanks to
the breezy melodic riffs and trans-genre feel in the arrangements, enabling the
song to take you wherever you want it to! Sukhwinder Singh and Tanvi Shah
provide some awesome vocals backed by Gulzar's lyrics.
Riots marks the beginning of a series of powerful and vigorous thematic pieces
by Rahman. While the piece is fairly short, it packs a mighty punch.
Mausam & Escape is the best thematic instrumental on the lot! Rahman simply
shows off as programmer. He synthesizes a mesmerizingly wicked aura of sound
that explodes all over you! The enticing guitars, the heart-pounding bass
lines, thrilling sitar plucks, the soul-thumping synths and the haunting
orchestral strings bring out the goose bumps.
Liquid Dance has Rahman’s orchestral strings that give the piece a hauntingly
unique signature. Apart from using some very cool new sounds and effects,
Rahman once again blends east and west.
Latika’s Theme is the instrumental of the very soulful “Dreams On Fire.”
However, Rahman realizes that the beauty of the original song lies within the
melodic power and vocal gentleness. Ultimately, it is the sweetest of musical
fragrances.
Millionaire is perhaps the one and only track that sounds conventional in its
production and overall treatment. It is another fast-tempo background piece
filled with thumps of bass and panning synths.
In Gangsta Blues Rahman lays the cement with a Techno-esque hip-hop rhythm,
while also adding some Jazz elements, including some Blues organ sounds. Blaaze
struts his stuff with a relaxed reggae ‘n’ rap rendition alongside Tanvi Shah
and the end result of which is pure entertainment!
SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE’S music is a brilliant landscape of cultural textures,
global sounds, and cross-genre transformations. You would be a complete idiot
to give this album a miss!

[arr] SDM movie review --- Idlebrain

2008-12-24 Thread ravi_2174
It is not about cashing on the poverty of the country. It is not about
exploitation. But when, in "Salaam Bombay", as a train rushes through
a Bombay tunnel screaming along its tracks, and a bunch of children
who are playing nearby stand in attention and let the train pass by,
and resume their play after the train roars past, and it is later
revealed that those children weren't just playing close to danger, but
they in fact live in the near by tarp covered huts just a few feet
away from the tracks, and the rhythmic roar on the rails is as common
in their lives as the crow of the rooster every morning, the situation
is not about putting down the value system of the country. It is not a
comment on the political, social or economic inequities of the same.
The presentation is just the everyday reality in a country stuffed
with people to the brim. To an unacquainted eye (read, western world)
the poverty and the lack of care/respect for human life might be
unsettling or shocking even. But to an average Indian, poverty is as
much part of the scenery as plushness is. People have grown up (and
continue to do so) with glaring contrasts all around. An awe-inspiring
sight of the majestic Taj Mahal shares the space with industrial
pollutants and sewage floating in the adjacent river running by. The
crests of tall sky scrappers are balanced with troughs of shanty
living areas. Imported automobiles try to make their way through the
bullock carts, hand drawn carriage and peddle-style rickshaws. Walk
out of the costliest restaurant in town, and a bunch of beggars who
haven't had a full meal in days make their presence felt in no time.
Just what reaction can a normal reaction, with enough empathy and
sympathy, muster up when confronted with the wild vagaries of everyday
life in India? Most of them, the spiritual, philosophical and the
religious minded fall back on the most comforting argument of all - it
is destiny, it is karma, it is fate, it is written. Swami
Vivekananda's statement that in India within every lowly beggar lies a
great philosopher is not too far-fetched, considering, optimism alone
cannot provide all the answers to contradicting questions of life in
the country. A dash of detachment, a touch of thick skin and a pound
stone-heart are vital for getting through the everyday life. And add
to that, a will to dream.

Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire" is a fantasy at its heart - a
heady mix of danger, depression, oppression, optimism, chance and
luck, all thrown together in a blender and spun at high speeds,
without forgetting to add that essential ingredient of 'life in
India', to bring out a rich flavor that is very unique to the land.
And setting the story against the backdrop of the biggest slum in Asia
- Dharavi - which is right in the middle of the richest city in the
country - Mumbai - only compounds the contrasts. More than half a
million people living in sub-standard (even, sub-human) conditions,
right in the midst of the biggest urban sprawl, consisting of sky
scrappers, malls, golf courses etc, remains one of the greatest
paradoxes in the story of the economic success of the country. The
road to riches has forked into three parallel paths, one each for each
living class. The ultra-rich remain untouched by the day to day ups
and downs; the middle class has just recently found a new spring in
the step, and therefore, marching on its own road in its own stride;
and the perpetual poor, who, like the rich in a way, are unaffected by
the mainstream movements in the country, except when visited upon by
the tragedies and calamities (riots, bomb blasts, gang wars and just
stray accidents). Each section remains strongly and strangely
oblivious of the ones a level below, to their joys and the sorrows, to
their pleasures and the pains. And on those rare occasions, when the
paths intersect, each group would treat the other with a sense of
mistrust, disdain and disgust. Again, this is not a social commentary,
just the status quo. What better could serve as the setting for a
great human interest story that has everything in it - love, emotion,
drama, sentiment, comedy and tragedy - the magic combination of every
known human emotion, right in front of the eyes, served in a rich
celluloid platter?

Here is the brilliance of the script. The movie is mixed with every
little depressing aspect that plagues the lives of children in slums -
lack of education (and therefore, denial of legitimate opportunities),
poverty, constant risk of being exposed to every worse impulse of
humanity - communal riots, forced induction into begging by mutilation
(the more the handicap, the more the sympathy and the better the
returns), child prostitution, early exposure to anti-social activities
and many more. Yet, in spite of all this, "Slumdog..." is in fact one
of the most heartfelt uplifting movies in recent times. A few years
ago, Boyle tackled this "innocence in the face of cynicism" theme in
"Millions", when a couple of kids find a b

Negatives:
1)A R Rahman's name appear somewhere near the end of all technicians

which i felt very bad.. I would have loved it for 5 seconds.in the

by AR Rahman it said...never seen that before in tamil / hindi
movies..Also no mentioning of singers / MIA
2)Mumbai shown in a way which is sometimes very hard to take..(like

Awesome movie, and worth the money!
