I feel there is a reason behind use of minimal instruments.
It's going to performed in a stadium, he might have thought anybody shd be able
bring the sound with minimal instruments they have.

I'm completely satisfied with the instrumentation and it's a great idea for
this kind of song.

All you need here is to have the crowd sing along, I'm sure that's going to
happen.

Hey Ramesh,

I can see you're a big fan of score/symphonic music! You've alluded to that
indirectly many times here. I appreciate your refined tastes.

Jai Ho! Songs are stars of show
By Jane Cornwell, Evening Standard 26.07.10

Glitz and glamour: Jai Ho

It’s been a bumpy ride thus far for Jai Ho: The Journey Home. Last
month the lavish world tour by Indian musician and film composer AR
Rahman played just four shows in the US before hitting a pothole in
Detroit, where a stage collapse forced the postponement of several
American and European dates. On Saturday the protracted weekend
closure of the Jubilee line forced ticket holders to the Indian
maestro’s concert at O2 Arena to arrive by boat and bus.
A technical hitch at Wembley Arena delayed start time by an hour, but
once this high-tech extravaganza got going there was no holding it
back. As breathtaking and mesmerising as it was OTT and schmaltzy, Jai
Ho — named after the Oscar-winning track on Rahman’s Slumdog
Millionaire score — crammed 37 songs into a 160-minute set.
The diminutive Rahman, 44, has written music for more than 600 films,
many of them Bollywood epics; his knack for orchestral melodies, along
with his fondness for playing the keytar while wearing aviators, is
part Lloyd Webber, part Prince. Screams of recognition from a largely
Asian crowd greeted the likes of O Saya, a song originally recorded
with British Tamil singer M.I.A, and the flute-led instrumental theme
to the movie, Bombay.
As dancers back-flipped, aerialists twirled on ropes and a team of
singers and rappers delivered everything from pop and hip hop to
techno and traditional Indian music — ghazal singer Hariharan sent his
voice spiralling heavenwards on Hai Rama — the artist at the centre of
it all was a benign and sometimes incidental presence.
For all his sequinned frockcoats Rahman is not a natural showman. “The
pedal isn’t working,” he said shamefacedly of his piano. “But I’ll
manage.” Which he did. But the real stars last night were his songs.

Hi,

I also bought tickets for Paris concert and I don't want to get refund, I want
to wait to for the new date hoping that the ticket will be still valid for the
new date or venue.

Please give us the new date, I have been asking this since the 17th adnalso
posted many mails on raaga france site, on A.R.Rahman Facebook pages, on global
rapport site. I even have called A.R.Rahman studio in Chennai to have an
answer. I didn't get reply to any of my mails or people just told me that they
don't know yet. IT's really killing me, everyday I check A.R.R official web
pages for any updates and I am sick to see again and again "To be announced" in
front of Paris concert.

Help please, Gopal, Vijay please do something, pass the message to ARR that his
fans in PAris are eagerly waiting for him. Here in Paris we are really very far
from our indian events, it's very rare that something happen, unless the US or
UK where all the indians are like home with all the indian products (DVD, CD,
etc.. available as soon as they release). We expected a lot when the concert of
ARR has been initially announced (Jai Ho Circle, Premium and other VIP tickets
were all sold out here in Paris). Please!!

Fellow ARR fans/Gopal/Vithur,
we are eagerly waiting for ARR to come back on
sep12th in bay area. After the initial slip of June 26th date(pretty much sold
out),we are hoping for the same crowd to come back.

I have to humbly request ARR to consider a Raavan song as well as kabhi kabhi
aditi.I totally understand the international feel to this concert. But we also
need the ARR feel good songs to balance it.

This will also balance out the crowd disappointment because of postponement of
concert earlier.

Hope ARR considers it and surprises us in oakland on sep 12th...

GO ARR!!! we will rock on sep 12th.

the start, I have been having this feeling that this certainly wasn't the
way to do an AR's concert. Even after the oscars, even after all the media
coverages and interviews.. 90% of his fans still remain South Asian
community. because, the rest of the world have only heard Jai Ho and Slumdog
Millionaire. And that is not a good enough reason to go to an expensive
concert.

I felt that promoters were trying to promote a big show rather than AR
Rahman himself. if you look at the promo videos.. they are all about how
grand this show is.. how good the technologies are used for the show etc..
But, not much about his music. I think, that is not going to do any good
for AR Rahman or his music.

Opinions may certainly differ on this issue (Gimmics). I for one am not in
favor of the dances, lights, Fireworks etc as they certainly distract the
attention from the beautiful melody of ARR's songs.

Basically ARR's music is so powerful and spiritually uplifting, it works best
if you just close your eyes and let the sound percolate deep within your
heart...

I guess, these "so called" gimmics may be useful to get the sponsors... And
probably it is not expected that the sponsors be diehard Rahmaniacs

what is the need for all these gimmicks ?

Hope he would continue the tour with more musicians than dancers and tech

Regrettably, we are having to postpone part of the current European tour.
The shows that were due to take place in Zurich on July 16th, Paris July
17th and Mannheim on July 18th have had to be postponed due to circumstances
beyond our control. The elaborate production and set design includes custom
state of the art equipment and staging. After four highly successful
concerts, the tour was derailed by a serious accident in Detroit (US), where
part of the stage infrastructure collapsed, destroying most of the staging,
lighting and musical instruments. The shows in North America have been
rescheduled for September.I regret the inconvenience this causes and
apologize to my fans and all those who have contributed to the tour. The
shows will be rescheduled as soon as possible. In my 15 years of doing
concerts I have always put my fans first. The accident in Detroit has had a
profound effect on all of us. The band, dancers and crew and I are all
highly disappointed, but it is the fans to whom I send the most heartfelt
apology.

The Hong Kong China finalists performing to Jai Ho

On their last day in India, the 15 Hong Kong China finalists danced to the
tune of AR Rahman’s song Jai Ho in the capital, mesmerising the audience
with their moves.

The finalists had practiced for only five days before putting up a show
choreographed by Kanika, a Delhi based choreographer, and her crew. “It was
all so sudden and fast, just like a toofaan,” said Kanika about the entire
experience. The steps were a mixture of simple jazz and classical Indian
dance movements, complete with traditional Indian hand mudras and poses,
reminding one of the beautifully carved dance figures on the walls of the
South Indian temples, but only that these gorgeous ladies were clad in
colourful Grecian goddess dresses.

Truly Bollywood: Two male members of the Hong Kong team joined the finalists
during the practice session. They were truly inspired by Bollywood. One of
them got the audience cracking up with laughter with the ‘putting the light
bulb from one hand and petting the dog from the other’ Darcy step from
Gurinder Chadha’s movie Balle Balle! Amritsar To LA. “We love Bollywood
movies back home,” said Jason Wong, the pageant’s official travel agent.
Girls like to have fun! The finalists were seen helping and encouraging each
other during the practice session. Kudos to their spirit!

[arr] Jai Ho Song List - impression

2010-06-14 Thread arr_raghu
the more we think the more right the show seems.
its wonderful to see ARR singing his jaagehai of bose, only you
and yeh jo des hai tera and lukka chuppi.
o its a complete pleasure to watch ARR standing and singing into
his microphone.. adrenalin rush.
He has by all means answered all his fans requests.
one might always think why not this song why not that, or something else
but the fact is that ARR has soo many chart busters that
it is just impossible to pack everything in 3 hours..
it will probably take like a 5 day test match to play bunch of ARR hits.

He is always trying to give new in the shows rather than rely on His pre 2000s
hits and then He is trying to spread his wings to more
international eclectic audience than sticking just with tamil and hindi..
more than anything, it seems He is building up his own package
a team for all his future concerts..
just have to wait and witness His next series of concerts hopefully with his
own school symphonic orchestra.
hope they release the DVD ASAP.. a Blu-Ray helps.
yeah, Gopal said it right..go watch the JaiHo tour for an experience.

Hi,

Couple of us were at all 3 concerts. It was amazing.

Positives:
Amazing singing, across the board
Good production (no awkward gaps between songs)
Chaiyya Chaiyya was great
Lukka Chuppi with Lataji
Benny was great, as always

Negatives:
None

Not so positives:
Too short - only about 2 hours 40 minutes
Not enough of Hariharan
Some microphone issues at the AC concert
No songs from Raavan
No songs from VTV (other than a bit of piano and one line of Hosanna)
Some strange song choices (we did not mind it but most of the crowd were
wondering what song was being played)
- Only You (Vande Mataram)
- Azaadi (Bose)
- Holi Aayi (Mangal Pandey)
- Taxi Taxi - this was a lot of fun
- Bharat humko - of all the songs in Roja this was the least expected

Here is the list of songs - the sequence is close but not exact...
Journey home

Athirathee - Sivaji
Say na na - Couples Retreat
Yeh jo desh hai tera
Baro re megha - one of the best songs in the show
Latikas theme
Dreams on fire
Bharat humko - very well done
Nazarein milana
Bombay theme
Dil se re
Liquid Dance
Mausam and escape
Pappu can't dance
Hai raama - amazing
Lukka chuppi - amazing - probably the highlight of the show
Urvasi
Taxi taxi
Hello Mr ethikatchu - Iruvar - beautifully sung
Vtv piano
Azaadi
Ringa ringa
Only you

Unplugged (no more than one or two lines of each):
- Raaga
- Bhor bhaye
- Raaga
- Sunri sakhi - telugu - crowd favorite
- Dheeme dheeme gaon
- Genda phool - crowd favorite
- Anbe anbe
- Hosanna - crowd favorite
- Kandukondain - crowd favorite
- Rehna tu
- Ishq bina

Mehendi hain rachne wali
Maangalyam
Holi aayi
Il onkar

Khwaja mere khwaja
Ganesh
Chaiyya chaiyya

ARR Fans,
Before we get to see ARR in Bay area (oakland on june 26th),I wish
ARR and team does not miss the sounds of Alaipayuthae/Saathiya
(pachai niramae/snegithenae),kabi kabhi aditi and Raavan.

I did not see the above in the song list which came so far.

Kabhi kabhi aditi has been the biggest hit in the recent times and who can
forget Alaipayuthae/Saathiya.

I want to thank ARR for including Only you(vande mataram) deserves hearing by
global audience. One of my favorite by ARR.

All the kids love kabhi kabhi aditi and saathiya.Hope ARR gives a thought for
his dying audience in the bay area.

  Guys

Last night, I had been to the Jai Ho show - New York..  Here is a quick review..

Prominent Singers were: Hariharan, Benny and Blazee ( I don't remember or I
don't know the others who performed)
Athiradee, Nazare Milana, Taxi Taxi  (slowly transformed after Rahman sung the
initial portion of  Urvashi Urvashi) Dilse re (must see to believe the crowd's
happiness for this song even today after hearing at least 100 times).  Luka
Chupi  (Rahman singing with the huge image of Lata Mangeshkar's earlier
performance was a great idea)Benny Dayal and Blazze looked similar (except
Blazee wearing baggie). BTW, Benny danced greatly as if he is a pro
dancer. Ended with Jai Ho
Sivamani was missing but, the guy who took his place (a Chinese or some Asian)
was clearly on par with Sivamani.
Great combination of orchestra and colorful lighting arrangements like one of
the shows in Las VegasBut the connectivity was surely missing for some or other
reasons.   (may be due to the absence of regular performers such as Sivamani,
Sukwinder, Naresh Iyer, Chinmayee and the rest).

However, another great show from Rahman to challenge other kind of shows like
this.  It was clear when the crowd was reluctant from moving out even after the
show was ended.

There will be so many lead singers to follow for sure !! I guess these
singers r the permanent singers for all the 20+ Concerts going to take place
as they r totally free !! Besides Alphones joseph is also attending the
reharsels !! Some older singers might not be able to make it to the list i
think ...as it's very hectic to do concerts almost daily in different cities
! they will attend some of the concerts according to their availability and
physicial condition !! I am so worried about the fact that they r doing
concerts almost everyday !! it will be hectic like hell for sure !!

just calculated thoughts,nothing else !!

[arr] Jai Ho - World Concerts - Singer List

2010-05-28 Thread Rivjot
Male - Hariharan, Javed Ali, Benny Dayal, Blaaze & ARR himself

Female - Shweta Pandit, Neeti Mohan

Male singers are fine, but I am little concerned about female singers. Only 2?
that too not regular ARR singers. Not doubting their singing, they both are
fine singers.. just that none of them have sung lead songs for ARR.
Either Chitra or Sadhna ji used to join ARR in his concerts.. was looking
forward to have them along with the team in this world tour concerts. I guess
they were not able to find that much time to stay outside India.

Thinking of female singers at ARR concerts, I am not aware of any concert where
Alka Yagnik or Shreya Ghoshal were part of the concert. am I right?

Fellow ARR Fans,
I am excited about this concert coming to Oakland, california.I
am wondering how ARR is going to select the songs among his jems for this
concert and balance it.Personally I would love to hear the maestro himself. How
will he balance between his keyboards and singing. Also I see only shewta and
Neethi from the female singing part.Anybody else is going to support.

Update any info you guys have.

Jai Ho in Tamil next year, says Mozart of Madras

Express News
Service
First Published : 01 Apr 2010 03:58:00 AM IST

NEW DELHI: “I will compose ‘Jai Ho’ in Tamil, next year,” said Academy Award
winner A R Rahman at a felicitation for Padma awardees from Tamil Nadu here
on Wednesday. The function was jointly organised by Tamil daily Dinamani and
the Delhi Tamil Sangam.

The music maestro added that the idea of composing the song in Tamil struck
him when he heard children sing the song in Hindi during the function.

Apart from Rahman, Nobel prize winner Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Apollo
Hospitals Chairman Dr Prathap C Reddy, former CBI director D R Karthikeyan
and Siddha expert J R Krishnamurthy were felicitated.

Venkatraman Ramakrishnan said appreciation will automatically come when a
person pursues what he wants without worrying about monetary benefits.

“I am not as popular as Rahman but I had an objective and I followed it.
This recognition sends out a positive message to the people of Tamil Nadu
that dedicated work can receive recognition,” said Venkatraman.

D R Karthikeyan said many from Tamil Nadu have appeared for the civil
services exams and are in Central Government jobs. He pointed out that
Tamilians are again getting world recognition. “All the awardees here hail
from middle class families and worked hard to reach this status,” he said.

J R Krishnamurthy, who received the award for discovering a Siddha medicine
for psoriasis, a skin disease, called for the setting up of more Siddha
clinics across the country.

Dinamani editor K Vaidyanathan asked Tamilians to vow to speak in Tamil in
their homes, no matter where they live. “The awardees here have not just
upheld the pride of Tamil Nadu across the country but throughout the world.
Felicitating them is like felicitating Tamilians ourselves,” he said.

[arr] Jai Ho by cappella group called Sterotypes performed at Michigan theatre -- Pretty cool

2010-03-23 Thread manisha madhavan
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqtqpmN3F_M

And also to note that they took home first place in this International
Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA)
One of the judges for this semifinal was Kristina Wood, whose bio noted that
she had worked with A.R. Rahman on a music for a number of films,
includingSlumdog Millionaire. Oh the irony, that that’s exactly where The
Stereotypes were headed with their closer, “Jai Ho.” Forgive my language, but
this is probably the single ballsiest song choice I’ve ever seen an
accomplished group make in a competition set. The solo was solid, and the
choreography was, by far, the most fun of the night. The guys used a positively
sick stomp and clap routine for percussion at one point. This is a textbook
example of how you close a set—saving your most powerful, barn-burning number
for the end; picking a song that very few a cappella groups in the world are
doing; executing the heck out of it. I simply can’t say enough good things
about this song, easily my favorite set closer I’ve seen so far in 2010.

[arr] Jai ho! Will win 100 awards: Sukhwinder

2010-02-03 Thread A.R.Rajib
Jai ho! Will win 100 awards: SukhwinderZINIA SEN , TNN, 4 February 2010,
12:00am IST

Sukhwinder Singh tells TOI that even though AR Rahman has mentioned his
name in his Grammy acceptance speech, he is happy that the composer has
[image: Sukhwinder
Singh]

Sukhwinder Singh
  been receiving so much praise

It’s Jai Ho! that has won AR Rahman one of the two Grammys in the Best
Motion Picture Song category. How does it feel?
It’s a great feeling. In fact, I had been waiting for international
recognition and a Grammy for Rahman since his Roja days. That a song sung by
me has got him international awards makes me doubly happy. Jai Ho! is a
blessed song.

Did you congratulate Rahman after the Grammys?
Yes, I did congratulate him on his win.

Rahman even mentioned you in his acceptance speech...
Rahman has been a friend for long. Mentioning my name in a speech is not
really important to me. What is important is the fact that he has received
so much praise.

Sound man Resul Pookutty had mentioned: ‘What Zanjeer did for Amitabh,
Slumdog has done for us’. Do you agree?
Rahman is a genius and awards or no awards, his music is universal. Even
before these international accolades came his way, Rahman has been a much
sought-after musician. The only difference now is that he has carved a
bigger circle for himself. It’s been a jump ahead on another platform.

Are more Hollywood films coming your way?
Yes, I have composed and sung for Steven Spielberg’s next film.

Personally, did you expect more awards for the song?
As I said earlier, this song is blessed. It has already bagged most of the
top international honours. I believe that it will win 100 plus awards
(laughs).

Last but not the least, do awards make a difference to you?
Awards are fine, but the best award is when your song is played in clubs,
auto-rickshaws, on the radio, in people’s cars and is widely demanded for
stage performances. For me, my fans are the biggest reward and award.

Sukhi comes to Tollywood

Roshni Mukherjee

Jai ho! Sukhwinder Singh is lending his voice to Tollywood. The singer has
recorded his first Bengali number for Rohin Banerjee’s Kolkata — The Metro
Life. With increasing interest of listening to Bengali playback,
Sukhwinder’s entry is going to be a bonus for Bengali cinema.

Incidentally, Rohin had always wanted the singer for the title track. “After
all, a singer of his calibre would add a different dimension to the project.
I am elated that Sukhwinder agreed,” Rohin said, adding that it was “all
thanks to Sharad” that Sukhwinder came on board. “I was discussing about
roping in Sukhwinder with Sharad (Kapoor) when he said that the two of them
are good friends. Once Sharad approached him with the proposal, Sukhwinder
agreed to lend his ear to the Babul Bose’s track and Priyo Chattopadhyay’s
lyrics that go like: Agun buker majhe/Agun moner majhe/Agun chitar anche
jolchhe lyrics. Sukhwinder loved the song and a meeting later, he was part
of the project,” Rohin revealed.

When CT got in touch with Sukhwinder, the singer had just completed
recording the number. Speaking about his Bengali innings, the singer said,
“I’ve been wanting to sing in Bengali for the past few years. Bengali is a
rich language. When Sharad approached me for the film and I heard the
subject, I agreed. In fact, this is the first time that I am singing in a
Bengali film.” Gushing about the song, he said that it is “dashing,
energetic, melodious and well-written”. But wasn’t singing in the language
difficult for the singer? “I understand Bengali,” came Sukhwinder’s quick
reply, adding, “It took me hardly half an hour to sing the song. Honestly, I
feel rejuvenated after singing the track. Main khush hoon.” So excited is
the singer that he is keen to sing the second number for this film too.

Interestingly, Babul Bose and Sukhwinder know each other since the former’s
struggling days. “For some time, we had lost touch. Sharad helped us bridge
the gap,” Babul said.

Fact is when, Rohin had told him that he is trying to get Sukhwinder for a
song, Babul had already composed the particular track keeping Sukhwinder in
mind. “I told him, ‘Keep the song only if Sukhwinder is singing it. Or else,
we will think of something else’,” Babul recalled.

Recollecting his recording experience with the singer, the composer said,
“Sukhwinder infused so much energy into my composition that I could hardly
recognise it after the recording. As far as singing in Bangla is concerned,
he wanted to know the meaning of almost every word in the song.”

Sukhwinder has sung the remix version of the same song too. Here’s hoping
there’s Nasha hi nasha when Sukhwinder sings a Bengali note.

[arr] Jai Ho show

2010-01-16 Thread Umie
Dear Rahmaniacs,
As Sydney was setting for a spectacular Bollywood treat “JAI HO”, A rare live
performance by my Guru Ji Rahman, I was searching in the internet to find a
live broadcasting link to watch our Guru Ji's. I could not find one and slept
with the heavy heart. This morning I continued my effort and finally I got the
AUDIO link. I shared the link with my sister and other Rahmaniacs.

Although I missed the 1.45 hours of the show, I could listen to the last
session of the show, which made Goosebumps and tears roll out of joy.

Thiruda Thiruda - Koncham Nilavu, OMG!!!, I have never heard that song in any
of the live concerts, with so much style and rap. I think, the song was not
sung by Anupama. I didn't know who did that rap but was superb.

Dil Se Re, when he sang that word I could hear the cheer from the entire crowd,
exhilarating feeling.

Mustafa Mustafa, was startling too, with so much lead guitar improvisation…
wow...

Then, I heard Guru Ji's voice ...no words to tell but ecstatic,….. Goosebumps
and tears, I mean it. Guru Ji was really in great sprits.

Antha Arabic Kadaloram, wow!!! started with Blazze's rap "Humma Humma"

"Vande maadaram" followed Humma Humma...Then Guru Ji said: We are coming to end
of this show...Thank you for coming, God Bless you, “Jai Ho”. Then the show
finished up with incredible song "Jai Ho"...

I am sure, Sydney audiences had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see my
Guru Ji in the beautiful parkland of Parramatta Park.

I want to hear more about the experience from the luckiest ones, who were able
to participate in this show.

The sound system was in very good quality. I think this is one of ARR”s show
which had with the best sound Quality.

"I want to have a great concert for people to enjoy, and also to spread the
message of togetherness and peace; build a bridge for people who are trying to
break it." – AR Rahman message in a new conference before the concert. God
bless Guru Ji with audience

Thank you

Music is my 2nd mom
Luv u ARR
