Question: Malloc Failed on Server

2007-11-01 Thread T. Dee
Good morning.

I was wondering if anyone has come across this error Malloc failed on server
(ARERR 300).

I get this error when I tried to export my workflow to a definition file.

I'm running AR Admin 7.0.01 Patch 002, ARS 7.0.01 patch 002 200704021644, SQL
2005.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks - have a good day.

2007-11-01 Thread T. Dee
I tried to export all definitions and received that error. So then I tried just
exporting Forms, Active Links, Filters Menu, Active Link Guide and Filter
Guides.

I have not used the Add all related - I click on Forms for example and click
add.

Thanks!

Hi,

Are you trying to export all definitions, or just selected/related workflow for
specific forms? Is it occurring when you select forms and click Add all
related, or when you're actually performing the export of the defs?

We're on the same release/server as you, and so far haven't encountered any such
issues (although we've had issues with the importing of the defs to the live
system) - could you be experiencing some issues with corruption of forms?
Possibly try with subsets of the data and start building that up to see if you
can identify a possibly corrupt form/piece of workflow?

Regards

Dave

Thank you for the information. Is their a chart that gives a conversion
for each character? I looked at the ASCII table and was not sure how to
convert it from this to a CHAR(9). I have a line feed or a hex of 0A.
What would give me the equivalent in the SELECT CHAR(What would this be
for 0A). Once I know the value I then want to remove this character
from the string.

Jackson,

You can use your RDBMS to return special characters. You just
need to find out the numeric value of them. For example, to get the Tab
character, Set Fields SQL: SELECT CHAR(9) Once you have the value in
a character field you can use that for your replacing.

I perform a replace on a special character?

Re: Another webservice query

2007-11-01 Thread Carey Matthew Black
Not that I have seen. (as a direct path)

But what they added in 7.1 was a more general solution. A new Filter
Execute on condition called Service that can be triggered by a new
Active Link action.
So basically you can do a null transaction (no RDBMS data created)
via this Service operation. Thus you can have the ARS server make
the WebService call and the Active link action looks like the Window
Open action in so much as there are Input and Output mappings
from the local field to the remote Form at the start and end of the
Service operation. Sure this could be used to have a filter be
triggered to call a Web Service, but it could also be called to
perform any thing that filters could do. However it still requires a
filter to call the Web Service.

And really... Why would anyone want to have to worry about network
path issues between every client and some external Web service host
anyway? Having the communications originate/terminate from/to the ARS
server seems like a much wiser approach to me. Having the client
connect to an external resource would add some real firewall/security
problems if you ask me.

Not to mention that Active Links are really optional in the ARS
design. ( An ARS API client does not honor them unless you write a
whole lot of code on your own.) So, again, making these integrations
be server based makes much more sense to me.

( I see no limitations. I see best practices being imposed for what
appear to be good reasons IMHO. )

No, you can only call it from a filter set fields action.
What you could do to work around this is create an active link with set
fields action from a form and run a filter on Get Entry on this form
which does the webservice call.

Jackson,

The line feed character is decimal 10 (carriage return is decimal 13).

To replace the line feed character in a character field with something else.

Set Fields SQL
$zTmpField1$ = SELECT CHAR(10)

Set Fields
$CharField$ = REPLACE($CharField$, $zTmpField1$, “x”)

If you only want to remove the line field change “x” to “”.

They wouldn't.
I think what I'd like (as well as a LOT of other people would like)
is a WEBSERVICE set-fields action in an active link, that acts
exactly like the SQL set-fields action in an active link. You don't
see clients making direct sqlnet connections or what have you
directly to the DB in those cases, either for the same reasons.

This new function sounds promising, in fact, I can't wait to get the
opportunity to install 7.1 and play with it, but to be honest, what
you're describing sounds even MORE goofy than the situation now, of
having to basically have a dummy form, push your webservice args to
it, fire a filter to call the webservice, etc ...

I like Remedy and all ... but damn if they can't find a way to go
around your ass to get to your elbow in any given situation.

Localization in ITSM?

2007-11-01 Thread Hall Chad - chahal
Are the ITSM applications localized for any non-English languages out of
the box? We have all custom apps so I've never seen ITSM. My management
wants to know if the ITSM suite comes with localized views, field
labels, messages, etc. If so, what languages does it have localized? And
does is also localize character menus, search menus, and reports?

I've seen what it will take to localize our own applications, and it
would definitely be a huge project.

Re: ARS 7.1

2007-11-01 Thread Pam Hollis
I have installed it - So far the big differences are the license keys -
when installing you only have to request a ARServer License Key. Then
you apply the application license keys - but you do not have an actual
license key for them - you just go into the license tool and add what
ever license that you need. Also, the Server Information, License Keys
etc is now all through the user tool you can no longer access through
the admin tool.

We have .. just off the top of my head ...

The approval engine install overwrote all our customizations.

The licensing of the app is different

Migrator 7.1 must be used against the 7.1 server and it gets a runtime Java
error so we can no longer use migrator (whats new its broke after every patch
release)

If I could do it all over again, I would wait for 7.1 to come out with its

Re: SLM - Pay to upgrade from SLA - Anybody fight this and win?

2007-11-01 Thread Emad Zaky
I won the battle twice
I think your argument should focus on why should we pay if the product is
discontinued?. More features doesn't account for a purchase (look at the
features from ITSM 6 to 7)...

It would be helpful to throw in a little incentive, like a promise of future
Remedy expansion, licenses etc

If worse comes to worse, you may need to review all the license agreements
and similar cases in other BMC products
My personal opinion is that this is unfair...

Emad

 Jack:

We were in the same position earlier this year but lost the battle. As
our sales rep explained it, they discontinued the older product (SLA
6.0) and were no longer going to upgrade or support it. To appease our
complaining, they offered us the new product (SLM 7.0) at zero cost - we
just had to pay the difference in maintenance for the balance of our
annual contract (i.e. the difference between the unused portion of SLA
maintenance and the pro-rated expense for the new product). It's my
understanding that this was a one-time offer that had to be processed
 by June 30, 2007.

Note that none of the above mentions functionality or features, it was
simply a product direction decision. If I were you, I would question my
sales rep as to why they didn't work with you to take advantage of the
one-time offer. Even though you weren't ready to move to 7.x at that
time, it obviously would have to been to your advantage to process the
SLA to SLM migration before June '07.

Okay, so here's the deal. We've owned SLA for many years and always
paid maintenance. All we really needed was a simple escalation tool.
Now we're upgrading to 7 and they're saying we have to pay another $30k
plus maintenance (80% discount I guess) to upgrade to 7 because it has
 extra features.

 =3D20

We've been paying for maintenance, which entitles us to an upgrade. If
they want to throw in a bunch of bells and whistles (none of which we
need), they should either have an SLM light that we can upgrade to for
free or a free upgrade to the full blown SLM.

 =3D20

Am I crazy here or ? Anybody else have this problem? Anybody else go
to the mattresses w/ BMC? How'd it turn out?

Re: ARS 7.1

2007-11-01 Thread Michiel Beijen
Not too bad, actually.
Some notes on ITSM 7 installation:

If you install the various components, disable the Email Engine
Service before you install Incident Management; otherwise your
installation will fail and there will be no way to get a good working
system again unless you reinstall everything... ref: KM-10007371,
SW00259388.

As stated before, the licensing is different. You can license the
server directly after the server installation; you'll only need to
have a license key for the server itself; the rest you can just enter
through the user tool.
Also what is mildly confusing is when you bought the ITSM Service Desk
app you will need to install and create licenses for Financial
Management app, the Incident Management app and the Problem Management
app. If you just put in a license for the Service Desk app, that will
not do...

Regards,

Michiel

Error calling Javascript

2007-11-01 Thread Murtuza B
Hello Listers,

I want to execute some custom javascript in a Remedy form.
I went to the 'Edit Web Header Content' in View Properties - Appearance
and pasted the following sample code:

div
script language=JavaScript
function printMsg()
{
  alert (This is a test);
}
/script
/div

I have a button on the same form, which has an active link, with a RUN
PROCESS action. The command line is:

javascript printMsg();

When I press this button in the mid-tier page of the form, I expect the
alert dialog, but instead I get the error:
Caught Exception: Object Expected

Can anyone help me with this error??

Thanks,

We had the problem with 7.0.1 no patch. there was a memory leak in BMC

TR vs DB value for SLA action

2007-11-01 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi All,

I just need to confirm something. We have a ton of SLA actions firing
on our server. One of them is not working properly, but I figured out
that it was because there were not enough qualifications in the stop
actions.

Here is the scenerio. I have a group that wants to stop the SLA
when the ticket gets reassigned out of their queue. Do I want to add
'TR.Assigned To Group' != 'Assigned To Group'?

Or do I want to do 'TR.Assigned To Group' != DB.Assigned To Group

Any advice would be appreciated.

Remedy Webservice to HelpDesk newbie question

2007-11-01 Thread Ravi
Hi: I have webservice through which an external source submits updates
to tickets in Help Desk. This webservice has 5 fields. Sometimes one or
more of these fields have a NULL or empty string. In that case I donot
want to change the field value in help desk. Since there is no filter
between the webservice and HelpDesk, how do I prevent a field getting
overwritten if the field value in webservice submission is empty or NULL.

Re: SLM - Pay to upgrade from SLA - Anybody fight this and win?

2007-11-01 Thread Covert, Jack
This is good to hear! We are working on holding the carrot over their
heads to help push things along. It's a good idea to ask why we were
being charged maintenance on a product, part of which goes to R and D
for upgraded releases, if we weren't going to get an upgrade. We should
have gotten a discount on the maintenance we were paying for the last
release if there wasn't going to be a future release.

I'm really trying to avoid having to go through legal on this.

I won the battle twice
I think your argument should focus on why should we pay if the product
is
discontinued?. More features doesn't account for a purchase (look at
the
features from ITSM 6 to 7)...

It would be helpful to throw in a little incentive, like a promise of
future
Remedy expansion, licenses etc

If worse comes to worse, you may need to review all the license
agreements
and similar cases in other BMC products
My personal opinion is that this is unfair...

Emad

We were in the same position earlier this year but lost the battle.
As
our sales rep explained it, they discontinued the older product (SLA
6.0) and were no longer going to upgrade or support it. To appease
our
complaining, they offered us the new product (SLM 7.0) at zero cost -
we
just had to pay the difference in maintenance for the balance of our
annual contract (i.e. the difference between the unused portion of SLA
maintenance and the pro-rated expense for the new product). It's my
understanding that this was a one-time offer that had to be
processed
 by June 30, 2007.

Note that none of the above mentions functionality or features, it was
simply a product direction decision. If I were you, I would question
my
sales rep as to why they didn't work with you to take advantage of the
one-time offer. Even though you weren't ready to move to 7.x at
that
time, it obviously would have to been to your advantage to process the
SLA to SLM migration before June '07.

Okay, so here's the deal. We've owned SLA for many years and always
paid maintenance. All we really needed was a simple escalation tool.
Now we're upgrading to 7 and they're saying we have to pay another
$30k
plus maintenance (80% discount I guess) to upgrade to 7 because it has
 extra features.

Well... I just want to point out that almost all of the European countries
has their own language. They have definitely not translated to anywhere

I have a fairly new tool call RRR|Translator that will simplify
translations of both Custom and OOB applications to a very high degree.

Yes: German, French, etc. Basically, all the European languages.

 It does make patching tricky!

Are the ITSM applications localized for any
non-English languages out of
the box? We have all custom apps so I've never seen
ITSM. My management
wants to know if the ITSM suite comes with
localized views, field
labels, messages, etc. If so, what languages does
it have localized? And
does is also localize character menus, search
menus, and reports?

I've seen what it will take to localize our own
applications, and it
would definitely be a huge project.

Have a form with a date (not date time) field. User enters the date

That is correct. Custom notifications that YOU create can be treated that
way, but not the OOB ones. You will have to control that via group

Great post, Rabi. All I can say is: Welcome to the party that is ITSM 7.
 We feel your pain.

My favorite As designed feature is that of showing the users all of the
notifications they can receive, but not giving them the ability to opt out
 of
any of them, even though the screen leads the user to believe that is an
 option.

Remember, you can't spell Quality without QA, though BMC seems bent on
 trying.

But, only following 2 are available, when you go to

When they say Support Group Manager in docs, they really mean

Related question...when making somebody a member of a support group,
the member and associate member choices are indistinct as far as

because I can't believe the designer didn't think of having the code
make some distinction such as not notifying associate members when a
group notification for, say, assignment, is sent.

Ok, just found out that code will allow members or associate members
of a group to submit/modify incidents in which the group is owner or
  assigned group.
  See Filter HPD:INC:ChkModifyPermission_017.

However, code will allow members, but NOT associate members of a
group to modify Owner Group of any incident in which the group is the
  owner. See filter HPD:INC:ChkModifyOwnership_021. I don't know why/how
in this instance, this distinction makes sense. At any rate, the doc
is wrong (pg 55 of config guide).

Lastly, and this is the question I have to get answer to for which I
am beating around the bush above...how can I have somebody
responsible for a list of support groups (they would review these
group's tickets on Management console), without having them receive
all sorts of notifications that would go to group members if I made him
 a

 member of that group?

 [Hide Quoted Text]

I like the more granular and closer-to-worldly-common-sense way roles
and permissions have been defined in ITSM 7, but the scheme appears
immature, incomplete, inconsistent and above all, not fully
articulated anywhere. I wonder how many inside BMC can explain to
anybody in full detail, the way permissions/roles work in ITSM 7.

I remember doing Tivoli training long time ago in which understanding
permissions/roles used by the suite's different modules came closer to
being a specialization in itself. With ITSM 7, it's not as complex,
but it's certainly confusing. Is there no clear explanation, precisely
  because it's so confusing/inconsistent??

Back to the war on error.
Yeah, no T. I don't think BMC meant to terrify me, but it surely has
me pulling my hair figuring out if my understanding is in error, or
they have made errors in judgment, design, execution, documentation

You can add a Modify/Merge filter to your HelpDesk form that on setting

You can restrict it using the $CLIENT-TYPE$ keyword to restrict it to a

ARS 7.1 Install

2007-11-01 Thread Ed LeBlanc
Hello and good day,

I have had some issues when installing ARS 7.1 on a Solaris box with Oracle 9i
and am looking for some clarification or other insights into the process.

1. ARS 7.1 Compatibility matrix indicates 9i or 10g is compatible however
install failed due a requirement for 10g 32 bit client. The DBA indicates that
10g is only installed as a 64 bit application and that the 32 bit libraries are
also installed at that time. Is this where I need to point the Remedy config
file to use the 32bit client?

2. Are there any issues if the Oracle 9i DB for ARS 6.3 is upgraded to 10g.

Thanks

Subject: APPLICATION-DELETE-ENTRY

**

All:

Can someone please put a second set of eyes on this for me? I can't get
APPLICATION-DELETE-ENTRY to work.

I'm calling it from a AL triggered by a button click.

Here's my RUN PROCESS syntax:

@@:APPLICATION-DELETE-ENTRY ITC-Trouble Ticket Routing Table
$53689098$

The form that holds the record I want to delete is named ITC-Trouble
Ticket Routing Table.

53689098 is the field ID of the field holding the Request ID of the
request I want to delete.

When I click the button, nothing happens. No error, nothing. The
workflow log shows that $53689098$ does resolve to the request ID of the
request to be deleted. The log also says SUCCESS but nothing really
happens.

Thanks,

Norm

Have a form with a date (not date time) field. User enters the date
11/01/2007. When they save the record the MidTier is changing the date
to 10/31/2007. I was not able to find any way of setting 11/1/2007 in
that field. Also, if I enter the date as 11/1/2007 4:00:00 PM it puts
11/0/2007 as the date.

Anybody else seeing this scenario?

Subject: Create view form from SQL Server dblink

 Good afternoon listers-
On ARSystem 7.0 SQL Server 2005, i've created a dblink to another SQL
 Server
2000 table. I've successfully created a view form off of this database
 link
and used the ROW_ID field as the key field for the new view form. The
problem I'm running into is that this key field is an integer datatype so
when I sort by this field in the form, it sorts like this:
 10
 1003
 1011
 102
 1038
 104

How can I get this corrected? I know I'll probably need to recreate this
database view and change the key field datatype, but I tried VARCHAR, but
then cannot use this field as the key field when trying to create the view
 form in Remedy.

 Thanks

That's the beauty of the Run Process, you can send anything you want to
the process. It only needs to know what it knows and damn the rest. If
the OS doesn't complain, nether shall I.

I've been stung too many times to care, what with over half of them
uppercase and the other half just Title case.

Re: Possible DST Issue

2007-11-01 Thread Joe D'Souza
Wow! That's weird. Does that happen from the native client too?

Just for information purposes - what if you save it on the mid tier and then
view the record from the mid-tier? What is the date displayed as? Also if
you save from the native client does it display it correctly on the
mid-tier?

Re: Changing Request ID Prefix in Incident

2007-11-01 Thread Joe D'Souza
Kaiser,

I do not know the ramifications of changing the prefix of the Request ID on
the incident form as I have never done it myself on that system. But there
is more than 1 form that you need to change this prefix on in order to
achieve this. I do not have access to any system at the moment or I would
list the forms.

I can say with certainty however, that you cannot have multiple prefixes
defined for a form. You can dynamically change the prefix if needed through
workflow by running a Direct SQL to the database to change that value and
then forcing a definition recache after changing the prefix using arsignal.

This would mean that you cannot do it all the time as that would overload
your system if you change your definition cache way too often.

Hope this helps

Cheers

  Hi all:

I know that you can allegedly change the prefix of an incident Request ID
from “INC” to something else. Has anyone done this successfully? Does it
have any ramifications on the functionality of the system as a whole?

Can you have multiple prefixes for incidents? For example, suppose you
have three sites: Site 1, Site 2, and Site 3. You want tickets for Site 1
to have a prefix of ST1, Site 2 to be ST2, and Site 3 to be ST3.

Is this possible? Any issues with it?

  Thanks,

  Norm

Just thought I would shoot a quick update to you all. There's way too
much to cover right now, but basic themes are:
a.. The AR System isn't going away, in fact, it is the core (I'm
listening to Doug Mueller say it right now) to all that BMC is doing. So
let's put that thread away.
b.. Support management is aware that there are problems, and they are
seeking input that will help them to provide the proper solutions to those
problems. I liked the initiatives that they spoke about.
c.. The new 7.5 (out mid-2008) Administrator tool is COOL! The learning
curve won't be nearly as steep as I had feared - most of us should be able
to figure it out in a day or so. LOTS of new functionality - details when
we have more time.
d.. The major initiative in ITSM is that Service Automation is the next
key initiative, and getting IT to automate its own processes in addition to
those of the business.
Vancouver is beautiful, and the meeting rooms have ALL been large enough.

More later, just wanted to whet your appetites!
