Bah!

If I am interviewing someone (and there have been a few choice occurances
of this in the past which were against my will and my manager had to drag
me from my console sessions, kicking, screaming, and clawing cube walls
the entire distance to the conference room) I am not looking for what they
have done in the past, what books they read, what animals might be on the
cover of books, or what degree the person has.

When you think about it, these criteria are positively useless. Using the
above, the interviewee might well 1.) have seen the books in passing and
be able to identify them, 2.) might copy someone elses design concept
(what if it is patented, or confidential?), or 3.) have a degree (or not
have one at all) in one field, but have been subverted into working with
the platform of choice at some point and been doing so for some time. (I
once knew a talented AR System developer who was nuts about the product
and was darn good with it, but had a Phd in Theoretical Mathmatics. He'd
teach an occasional class at a college when time permitted as well. Go
figure.)

So - you see, most of the criteria that get used so often are - IMHO -
bunkus.

An ideal candidate is one that is a passionate person; who is not just
fond of a platform or a technology, but rather is obsessed with it. A
candidate must be willing to learn; to go to bed at night with the
technical manual and wake up in the morning with the zipper-like seam
across their forehead because they fell asleep face-first on the manual.

I don't want someone that is able to recite back what they learning
sitting in a classroom at some training center and thinks that it's cool
because they now have a cute little cert sitting in a frame on their cube
wall. If I were to pick, I'd want the person that gets a smile on their
face about the technology, the one that one legs starts jumping up and
down when they're talking about the platform, and the one that the heart
rate starts to pick up when you show them the latest version of the
software. The whole point is not what you know - it's what you can do with
that which you do know.

I'd hire the person that has notes scribbled all over the manuals, and
keeps crib notes stashed in his/her pocket written on napkins and
bubble-gum wrappers or a code book (a book where random ideas about
system design are sketched out), and I would more than likely
file-thirteen the resume of the canidate that has all of the certs, and a
zillion years of experience with whatever it is that your working on. Why
you may ask?

Simple. There is no room in a small cube for an ego that has been
developed to such an extent, nor is there an allowance in a budget for the
salary that is demanded. Most really good developers are forged in the
fires of code, learning, and tribulation - not stamped from a mold,
prepackaged and shrink-wrapped for sale. C'mon, you know that this is a
fact... How many of us got up one day when were kids and said, I wanna
grow up to be an AR System developer? I'd wager that the answer is - ahem
- none. We all got drafted.

If you're hiring for a position, more than likely you want someone that is
going to do the job (maybe the candidate might not be able to at first,
and would require some training or getting their hands wet with the
technology first), someone who will be obsessed about it, and not someone
who is going to cost you a few hundred an hour with perks and travel
expenses.

You want someone that you can drop into the desert of a server room one
day, and the next day when you check on 'em, you can see that they are dug
in, got a suntan, a water reservoir, and have some sort of meat cooking
over a BBQ spit, rather than finding that your million dollar candidate is
parched from calling for room service and looking for the butler.

Hire ninjas with very little or nothing to lose, not samurai that come
from the court with vast tracts of assets.

Just my thoughts... Offered humbly...

Best question I ever got as a developer was a request for me to design a
 Car

Of course the interviewer was looking to see if I'd ask questions about
 the
 type of Car, Usage, etc

If I had just designed it as I wanted, I'd be back in Ohio!

Forcing Proxy Server Cache to refresh whenever they hit Mid-Tier

2008-02-20 Thread Elinore AR
Hi all,

I just want to throw this question out to everyone. We recently
reinstalled our Mid-Tier 6.3 and some people are able to access the
web URL and perform tasks on the Incident form but others are getting
the errors we were having prior to the re-install. For some other
clients, merely flushing their browser cache solved the problem but
majority of our clients appear to be proxy server caching and keeps
receiving the errors. To those who were having problems, the issue was
solved by them having to refresh their proxy server cache (after
flushing their browser cache did not work for them.)

But then we are managing about 2500+ client users and we can't keep
calling everyone and telling them they need to refresh their proxy
server cache if flushing browser cache doesn't work for their problem
to go away.

So I was wondering if there is any way from the Mid-Tier to force the
proxy server cache (whatever proxy cache system they have) to refresh
either every time it gets hit / one time during their first access of
the day / refresh when there is change in the file's last modified
date or something along those lines. Is there any provision either in
the Mid-Tier config files or from the Remedy Configuration Tool or a
code that you add on the Mid-Tier files that would signal the proxy
server to refresh the Mid-Tier files that have been cached without
having to do the refresh/clear from the client's proxy server cache?

Any input would really help.

TIA.

Elinore

Re: Custom ARS 6.3 apps on ARS 7.1

2008-02-20 Thread Nyall McCavitt

Hi,

I have just done this for our Development Server running ARS V6.on
Solaris 9 with Oracle 9.2. This has been successfully upgraded to ARS
V7.1 on Solaris 10 with Oracle 10g. We have a mixture of custom apps and
ITSM V5.6.

So far only one 'gotcha' which was with the command line executable
arimportcmd. If you use the -x option on the command line then there is
a problem with importing accented characters. Removing this option and
ensuring that the server is specified in the arm file.

Thanks.

That is the engineering answer. A square cover could be turned 45 degrees

So, yes, that was acceptable. There was another, simpler answer.

Manhole covers are round because manholes are round.

I think this Run if should get the job done.

  'Field' LIKE %[^-0-9]%

If you have to you might have to go as far as...
  'Field' LIKE %[^-0123456789]%
or maybe
  'Field' LIKE %[^0123456789-]%

( I seem to remember the hyphen need to be first to be understood as not
being a range, but I can not find that in the docs at the moment.)

Read it as:

When the field has a character that is not(^) a hyphen or in the
range([0-9]) of 0 to 9.

That just does not seem like that long of a Run If to me. :)

JMHO: However I would push to not support the hyphen too. they are silly in
a phone number. BTW: open and close parentheses are also silly. Phone
_numbers_ are numbers... not formatting. That is for reports/display tools
to do.

That is the engineering answer. A square cover could be turned 45
degrees
and would be smaller (lengthwise) than the opening. You can't do that
with a
round cover.

So, yes, that was acceptable. There was another, simpler answer.

Manhole covers are round because manholes are round.

Re: Custom ARS 6.3 apps on ARS 7.1

2008-02-20 Thread Nyall McCavitt

Hi,

The group IDs is not an issue yet as we have not yet migrated to ITSM V7
and so we don't have the SLM module. We are still running SLA.

I installed ARS V7.1 on a new server, pointing at the existing Oracle 9i
database. The installation program did the database upgrade. I then
obtained a new ARS V7.1 server licence and applied it. Our DBA then
exported the Oracle 9i database and imported it into an Oracle 10g
database. I then pointed the ARS config to the Oracle 10g database.

So far no issues have shown up apart from arimportcmd but the process
was only completed this morning.

Thanks.

Did you have issues with the existing groups like APP-Support /

SLM-Config etc.

The `$ is a hold over from when Guides were first introduced and the

Limit the active links in the table loop to run only against rows that
are selected. To do so, append `$ (backquote character followed by a
dollar sign) to the end of the names of the active links contained
within the table loop guide. (You do not need to change the name of the
active link that calls the guide, the names of the table loop actions,
or the name of the active link guide referenced by the call guide.)

Sql Server 2005

I was told by support that 7.0.01 had a known memory leak.
after about 3 months of continously running, our prod box finally crashed
due to no more available memory.
Has anyone else been told it's a known memory leak?

Thanks,

Jase

This is almost an impossible task on a short term engagement unless you
have a ready list of what can be safely deleted that is not used in any of
 the applications.

I so wish there is an effort internally by BMC engineering to clean this
app up. IMHO this should be among one of the priority fixes in a forthcoming
 patch...

Did BMC Support give an indication to anyone that they are likley to make
that effort to clean the applications up?

Re: Task variables

2008-02-20 Thread Ramey, Anne

I have a couple of questions about tasks and variables:

1) How does information get into system variables (used with task)?
2) If I can't put information into system variables (used with task) and it is
not best practices to put information into global [task] variables, how do you
pass information between tasks/task groups?

Forgot to mention I am using AR 7.0.1 on Linux with ITSM 7.0.2 Patch 4 with
Patch 9002 for IM (task management) installed.

Direct SQL - Using current request ID

2008-02-20 Thread Gayford, Matthew C.
Hi List,

I've got a button on the AR System Email Messages form that executes an
active link with a direct SQL action. The SQL statement needs to get
data from the current request, so I'm basing that on the Email ID field.
However, I can't seem to get the where clause to work. Here's what I've
tried.

Statement:

WHERE Email_ID = $Email ID$

Result: ARERR [552] Failure during SQL operation to the database :
Incorrect syntax near '='. (SQL Server 102)

Statement:

WHERE Email_ID = '$Email ID$'

Result: No item matches active link conditions - I checked the SQL log
and see this WHERE Email_ID = ' ' but if I run a report on the form I'm
working on I can see the Email ID field is populated.

Statement:

WHERE Email_ID = $Email ID$

Result:

*** ERROR *** An object or column name is missing or empty. For SELECT
INTO statements, verify each column has a name. For other statements,
look for empty alias names. Aliases defined as or [] are not allowed.
Add a name or single space as the alias name.

TIA,

I don't recall the Email Engine ever being referenced in armonitor.cfg.
It's always been a separate service with the only dependency being
defined in the registry to make the Email Engine service depend on the
AR Server service. But in my last fresh 7.0.1 install even that
dependency didn't exist. I'm guessing BMC decided not to link the two

Re: IM 7.x Bug - Need someone to check patch 6 or 7

I have a patch 6 installation and it still uses the LIKE operator

Date: Wed, 20 Feb 2008 15:04:34 -0600From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: IM 7.x Bug - Need
someone to check patch 6 or 7To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

In IM 7.02 patch 2 we have the following problem - I need someone to verify if
it exists in Patch 6 or 7 of IM 7.0x since I don't have a server free to
install on right now. Read below for more details.

If you have two (or more) customer (CTM:People) records with the exact same
name AND the same phone # (e.g., unknown ###) but different email addresses
(i.e., actually different people) and you do a search from the Incident screen
you are given the results in the People Search form.

If you select the first one you're fine.

If you select the second or later one the system selects the first one anyway.
This is because the workflow HPD:INC:PCS_100_Search does something really,
really stupid. It selects the customer record for the incident based off of
Like query using:
-Company
-First name
-Last name
-Phone number

Why this doesn't just use the People ID is beyond me - this is really sloppy.
It's also a very inefficient query.

That said - can someone with a patch 6 or 7 install check that active link and
see if the second Set Fields action is still a LIKE query?

Importing picture files; creating new records

2008-02-20 Thread Susan Palmer
Hi Everyone,

Quick question and I do apologize for only doing light research on this.

Is there a method I can import picture files (jpg) which will be stored in
an attachment field on a new record that will be created?

I know I can export attachments in .arx file and import those. But these
would be just pictures in a folder.

This record will be a child record to our Site form and a table field will
display the entries. I've never tried to display an attachment filed in a
table field so I'm not sure I can do that, but that would be the objective.
That way they could just double click on the file and open it. We have to
take various pictures related to customer installations and they are looking
for a better way to store this info than the server/folder structure they
are currently using.

I'm thinking one attachment field per record so we can categorize those
records for easy searching beyond looking at the individual Site records.

Thanks for your suggestions and help.

Working with Group / GroupList / GroupID

2008-02-20 Thread Tadeu Augusto Dutra Pinto
Good Evening for all...

I'd like to know if there is a possibility that I use a 'Set Field' or 'Push
Field' action on this case:

First, let's consider that I work with only one value on 'Group List' field
(Form User)..

I've created a Filter that work like this:
Form Name: User
Run If: 'Group List' != $NULL$
If Action: Push Field
  - Server Name: Current Server
  - Push Value To: MY_FORM
  -- Push Field If: ( $Request ID$ != 'Entry-Id') AND ( 'Entry-Id' =
$NULL$ )
  -- Fields: 'GROUP' = $Group List$

P.S.
// Entry-Id and GROUP are from MY_FORM form.

Well, what's happenin' ???

My field 'GROUP' (on MY_FORM form) is receiving the ID from the Group that was
in $Group List$ field from Form User...

I'd like to know if there is a choice that I put the Group Name of these ID in
my field 'GROUP' (on MY_FORM form)?

What have I done??

I have done an Active Link that makes a 'Set Field' action like this:
Form Name: MY_FORM
Run If: 'GROUP' != $NULL$
If Action: Set Fields
  - Server Name: Current Server
  - Read Value for Field From: Group
-- Set Field If: 'Group ID' = $GROUP$
  -- Fields: GROUP = $Group Name$

P.S.
// Where:
//  - GROUP is from MY_FORM form;
// - 'Group ID' and $Group Name$ are from Group form (Form of AR System)

But this isn't running...
I received the following message:

ARERR [313] Data types are not appropriate for relational operation
The preceding message occurred during the execution of active link MY_FORM --
action 1. (ARNOTE 1101)

Can anybody help me???
I'm avaiable for question and answers...

Thankx a lot in advance...

Re: IM 7.x Bug - Need someone to check patch 6 or 7

2008-02-20 Thread strauss
Since I had to customize the search dialog to search on Corporate ID and
Login ID since the OOTB code failed to do that (and previous 4.x and
5.5x ITSM apps we used here all did), I added those fields to the search
qualification, which makes it MUCH more specific.

( 'Company' LIKE ( $z1D Char01$ + % )) AND ( 'Last Name' LIKE ( $z1D
Char02$ + % )) AND ( 'First Name' LIKE ( $z1D Char03$ + % )) AND (
'Phone Number Business' LIKE (( % + $z1D Char04$) + % )) AND (
'Remedy Login ID' LIKE $z1D Char22$) AND ( 'Corporate ID' LIKE $z1D
Char23$)

Guess I could have cleaned it up some more, but I have not seen it
select the wrong customer with these qualifications.

In IM 7.02 patch 2 we have the following problem - I need
someone to verify if it exists in Patch 6 or 7 of IM 7.0x since I don't
have a server free to install on right now. Read below for more
details.

If you have two (or more) customer (CTM:People) records with the
exact same name AND the same phone # (e.g., unknown ###) but different
email addresses (i.e., actually different people) and you do a search
from the Incident screen you are given the results in the People Search
form.

If you select the first one you're fine.

If you select the second or later one the system selects the
first one anyway. This is because the workflow HPD:INC:PCS_100_Search
does something really, really stupid. It selects the customer record
for the incident based off of Like query using:

-Company

-First name

-Last name

-Phone number

Why this doesn't just use the People ID is beyond me - this is
really sloppy. It's also a very inefficient query.

That said - can someone with a patch 6 or 7 install check that
active link and see if the second Set Fields action is still a LIKE
query?

Re: Importing picture files; creating new records

2008-02-20 Thread Grooms, Frederick W
Using Pure Remedy code you could have a field in the import be the
full picture file name.

You could then use the PERFORM-ACTION-ADD-ATTACHMENT field_ID
[file_name] command to save the picture to an attachment.

Personally we have a form with a single attachment on it. We show a
table on the ticket that shows the records in the attachment form that
relate to the existing ticket record. When a user clicks on a row in
the table a custom AL display's the attachment using the
PERFORM-ACTION-OPEN-ATTACHMENT field_ID command.

**

TIA,

Changing Company Name on 7.0.01

2008-02-20 Thread Jase Brandon
Hello All,
I am getting several requests to change the Company field in version 7.0.01
Ex. Joe's Computers is now changing it's name to Joseph's Computers.

Field ID 11.
When I search this field ID in ARutilities, it returns 417 references to
that field.

Has anyone come up with a way to change Company name and ensure it is
propogated throughout the database?

Other than a monster SQL script to update the field in all locations, I
don't think this is possible.
My current answer to this question is: Set Joe's computers to Obsolete and
recreate as Joseph's Computers.
But then we lost historical reporting data, etc.

Has anyone else encountered this? I just thought we couldn't possibly be the
only company who has dealt with this situation.

Re: Email Engine Out of Box

2008-02-20 Thread Joe DeSouza
Dependencies if you are on Windows are created in the registry using the key
DependOnService. This can be done manually if it doesn't exist. Use regedt32 to
create this key.

The armonitor file only holds all the startup information such as startup
parameters etc.

Hope this helps..

Cheers

One of the questions I would ask is the error about violation of unique
indexes. What do you do when you get this error. An experienced
developer would know that this error can happen on both the user tool in
case the system tries to create a duplicate record due to a conflict
with the nextid in case it has been reset earlier OR can happen on the
admin tool while creating new objects if there is a conflict with the
containers ID that can happen sometimes due to data corruption for
whatever reasons..

I'd be more interested in the later part of the answers as if that
occurs its most likely an experienced developer who would know what got
to be done next to get it working..

I believe that there is a minimum permissions level that is set on the

Code like this makes me crazy. If you have the People ID

you not use where people ID = people ID.

A four-way Like search on a form that is holding 1,000,000

someone to verify if it exists in Patch 6 or 7 of IM 7.0x since I don't
have a server free to install on right now.

That said - can someone with a patch 6 or 7 install check that
active link and see if the second Set Fields action is still a LIKE
query?

Re: Interview questions

2008-02-20 Thread Joe DeSouza
A long long long time ago a client of mine once had this issue.. I had gone
under the covers, and realized that it the ARS was trying to create this object
with the same ID that already existed (I think it was for AL's) but the ID in
the container table was not updated. We never were able to find out how that
may have happened but we attributed it to possible database timeouts as they
were experiencing a few of those during that time..

On another occassion a lister here had experienced the same thing and I was
able to help him/her restore their system..

The thing about such errors is usually it doesn't give you details as to which
table or container this error is resulting from, and one way to find out is an
SQL log during the operation. I'm not sure there could be another method to
find this out as this is a DB problem..

Re: Changing Company Name on 7.0.01

2008-02-20 Thread strauss
BMC was supposedly going to release a utility for that this year
(2008), but if they release something like Data Management (patch 9003)
it will only work half-way, and only half of the time (and only with
jato bottles strapped to its butt).

If they release it on the same schedule we have seen for updating
Incident Task Templates (patch 9002), you should see it sometime in
calendar year 2009.

You'll probably have to give them Doug Mueller's stock answer for people
requesting customizations to ITSM 7: several iterations of NO.

We have not faced company renaming (and plan to reject it outright), but
we have seen some shuffling of support group names which is almost as
bad since you have to move the support staff over and reassign the
related records; your obsolete/recreate solution is the only one
available to us right now.

Me, either. I have seen that error occur when adding a unique index to a
field containing data that violates it. Multiple NULL values are the most
frequent culprit.

One of the questions I would ask is the error about violation of unique
indexes. What do you do when you get this error. An experienced developer
would know that this error can happen on both the user tool in case the
system tries to create a duplicate record due to a conflict with the nextid
in case it has been reset earlier OR can happen on the admin tool while
creating new objects if there is a conflict with the containers ID that can
happen sometimes due to data corruption for whatever reasons..

I'd be more interested in the later part of the answers as if that occurs
its most likely an experienced developer who would know what got to be done
 next to get it working..

Re: Direct SQL - Using current request ID

2008-02-20 Thread Gayford, Matthew C.
Just for the purposes of testing, I added a button to the form so I
could test with existing records. In the end I want to have it fire on

I was able to hard code the entry ID into the direct SQL statement to
make it work this afternoon, so I know the statement is good. I just
need it to interpret that entry ID somehow.

**

TIA,

Login to the AR User tool as an Administrator.
Navigate to the : AR System Administration Console ( from the Home

Then navigate to:

Then that opens the form AR System Administration: Server Information.

On the Log Files (tab) the field 'Client-Side Logging Group:' value is
the group that the user MUST be an explict member of.

( In versions prior to v7.1 this was in the admin tool. It is not

Re: Working with Group / GroupList / GroupID

2008-02-20 Thread Carey Matthew Black
Tadeu,

I can explain it, but the solution is not so easy.

The field 'Group' (on MY_FORM) is a character field. However the
'Group ID' field on Group is an integer field. Your database is
complaining because your comparing an Char with an Int.

I would suggest that you create your own MyGroup form and populate
it with data from the AR System Group form. That way you can have an
Integer 'Group ID' field and a 'Group ID As String' field too. (
Without risking changes to the AR System Group form.) Then you can
do your test against the MyGroup form and the 'Group ID As String'
field.

HTH.

 Good Evening for all...

I'd like to know if there is a possibility that I use a 'Set Field' or 'Push

First, let's consider that I work with only one value on 'Group List'
 field (Form User)..

I've created a Filter that work like this:
 Form Name: User
Run If: 'Group List' != $NULL$
 If Action: Push Field
   - Server Name: Current Server
   - Push Value To: MY_FORM
   -- Push Field If: ( $Request ID$ != 'Entry-Id') AND ( 'Entry-Id' =
 $NULL$ )
   -- Fields: 'GROUP' = $Group List$

 P.S.
// Entry-Id and GROUP are from MY_FORM form.

 Well, what's happenin' ???

My field 'GROUP' (on MY_FORM form) is receiving the ID from the Group that
was in $Group List$ field from Form User...

I'd like to know if there is a choice that I put the Group Name of these ID
in my field 'GROUP' (on MY_FORM form)?

 What have I done??

I have done an Active Link that makes a 'Set Field' action like this:
 Form Name: MY_FORM

 Run If: 'GROUP' != $NULL$
 If Action: Set Fields
   - Server Name: Current Server
   - Read Value for Field From: Group
-- Set Field If: 'Group ID' = $GROUP$
   -- Fields: GROUP = $Group Name$

 P.S.
 // Where:
 //  - GROUP is from MY_FORM form;
// - 'Group ID' and $Group Name$ are from Group form (Form of AR System)

 But this isn't running...
 I received the following message:

ARERR [313] Data types are not appropriate for relational operation
The preceding message occurred during the execution of active link MY_FORM
 -- action 1. (ARNOTE 1101)

 Can anybody help me???
I'm avaiable for question and answers...

 Thankx a lot in advance...

Limit the active links in the table loop to run only against rows that are
selected. To do so, append `$ (backquote character followed by a dollar
sign) to the end of the names of the active links contained within the
table loop guide. (You do not need to change the name of the active link

I was trying to do AL and filter logging from 7.1 AR client - but
did not log the filter calls. I was logged in as Demo and after
further reading found that something has to be enabled on the server
 side.

Can someone please clarify what has to be done so filter logging can
be done from the client tool.

Platform: ARS 7.1 on Solaris, Oracle 10g

   Thanks
   Atul

To simulate the other, try setting your next id for any object to an already
existing ID, and then try creating that object.. That's what happened at a
customer site, I only have a guess as to how it MAY have happened, but no
confirmation... If you do simulate it do not forget to set the Id back to
what it should be..

** Me, either. I have seen that error occur when adding a unique index to
a field containing data that violates it.

I'd be more interested in the later part of the answers as if that
occurs its most likely an experienced developer who would know what got to
be done next to get it working..

Why are manhole covers round? If any other shape they could fall in to
the hole that they cover.

Do I get the job?
