Re: How to upgrade AR system & ITSM apps from 6.x to 7.x

2008-04-09 Thread Rajagopal, Ramya
Hi Rick,

Thanks for the heads-up J

I understood as to how we'll do the workflow migration. I'm curious to know,

§ For these kind of activities, do we use Migrator tool or you have any
suggestions to this?

§ Say in scenarios, we have to move the data to the latest version, then do we
have some tool to accomplish the bulk data load?

Best Regards,

Ramya

** I'll make this short and simple. You do not upgrade. The differences
between v6 and v7 of the applications are as night and day. To migrate from v6
to v7, you need to install v7 fresh on a new server, and then figure out
whether you want to migrate your existing customizations and code over.

Once you get to that point, there are many here with the experience to help you
over the bumps.

Re: Escalation will not run?

2008-04-09 Thread RAMTRI, Nisha, IDC
We faced this issue as well wherein the escalations just wouldn't run and only
a restart of the server would fix it. The escalation thread would just die.
This is also a known bug in ARS 6.03 patch 17 and has been fixed in patch 18.

SW00237139 Escalation thread dies and restarts. At restart the escalation
thread does not fire any escalations.

I believe with 6.3 there was a patch level that had bugs with escalations.
You'd get "ghost" escalation threads, and you could only see them by looking at
weirdness in the logs. What I did was to disable escalations (server config),
which would shut down all the escalation threads. Give it half a minute to
"take", and then re-enable escalations. Its still not warm and fuzzy, but it
keeps you from having to experience the cold emptiness of a server restart.
Metaphorically speaking.

I don't remember which patch fixed it, but it did get fixed at some point.

I ran into this problem about a month ago. I agree, fixing it with a
restart did not leave me with a good feeling either. However, it did fix
the problem and escalations have been running fine since.

That (a restart) fixed it. Does not leave me with a warm and fuzzy

I have seen this before - we had this happen that escalations would just
stop running - I had to restart the server and it fixed the issue.

Re: Remedy Developer Plus

2008-04-09 Thread Roger Medsker
Greg,

What version of JDK do you have installed on your Windows system? I have
seen this symptom when installing Developer Plus for Remedy Admin 6.3 if you
have Java 1.5 (5.0) installed. Hidden in the Compatibility matrix is a note
for AR System Admin Tool that Java 1.5 is not supported. This note has
little meaning unless you are trying to install Developer Plus. Try
installing JDK 1.4.2 then re-installing Developer Plus.

it only works when that admin tool is logged in to my development server
that has the license for it. I had to install from patch 1493, which
resolved problems installing it with 7.1. I think there was also a registry
hack required to convince it that the 6.3 Admin Tool was present (which
Vista absolutely detested). I have run it on both XP and Vista; on Vista it
forces screen color to a lower quality. It is a faint shadow of what it
replaced (IT Masters ARMasterSuite), but it is the only way to browse
workflow on a 7.1 system with ITSM 7.0 since 7.1 STILL does not have the
bug fixed in the Admin Tool that prevents it from creating a search database
AND synchronizing it successfully.

Hi

We have been trying to install Remedy Developer 6.3 for some months now and
are making no progress. We are getting weird replies from support which
would indicate they don't even know what the product is.

When we have installed RDP (6 and 6.3), it appears in the admin installation
folder, but when we try and run it from the menu within the Admin client
nothing happens.

We have been asked by support to check if there is a Windows service for RDP
if we can uninstall it through Add/Remove Programs, neither of which are
valid as from our understanding, RDP does not install a Windows service, and
does not appear in Add/Remove Programs as a seperate application. Does BMC
even know there own tools?

The questions I have are:

- Is this tool still useful since the last update was 2005?

- Has anyone managed to get it to work?

Hi Greg/Joe
I have used Developer Plus, and as Joe says it is a useful tool.
The only thing I found was that to install it, you had to have ARAdmin 6.0
installed, no OTHER version will work with the install,(at least that is what i
found).
Have Version 6.0 Admin tool installed, then install Developer Plus, after
that it will work with versions of the Admin tool, I have not tried it 7.1
though. But for the install to work properly you must have V6.0 of the Admin
tool installed. And yes, if you do not have v6.0 installed, it does not give
any errors at install time, it just does not show up in the Admin tool, or if
it shows up it is either grayed out, or if not and you click on it, nothing
happens

Ankur,
Make sure the group category is set to "Dynamic" for these
groups. Also, the 'Submitter' group should be Group ID = 3, and the
'Assignee' group should be Group ID = 4.

If the manual creation still doesn't work, you might try
exporting the groups from another AR Server and importing them using the
Import tool. I have attached an export of these two group records from
my AR Server, which is also version 7.0.1.

Hope this helps,

Re: Need to restore Assignee and Submitter group

2008-04-09 Thread Thomas Bean
Ankur,
Make sure the group category is set to "Dynamic" for these groups. Also, the
'Submitter' group should be Group ID = 3, and the 'Assignee' group should be
Group ID = 4.

If the manual creation still doesn't work, you might try exporting the groups
from another AR Server and importing them using the Import tool. I have
attached an export of these two group records from my AR Server, which is also
version 7.0.1.

Hope this helps,

Re: Open Ticket from AL

2008-04-09 Thread Mayfield, Andy L.
OK, Maybe I jumped the gun. After testing with admin privileges and
having it work, I went back and tried again with the users ID and it
worked OK. Not sure what happened on my first test. I will continue to
test for a while, but it appears this may have it.

For some reason I never see the forest for the trees.

Re: Open Ticket from AL

2008-04-09 Thread Grooms, Frederick W
Strange... Since you are modifying an existing record you should have
the Entry ID (Request ID) of the record and can use that as a lookup.

Since you are working on an AL you have closed all occurrances of the
form (so the User Tool will re-load it's cache)

What Window Type are you Opening the form in (Modify or Display)?

How can I have a window open in different view on a button press?

I have created an AL that does an open window on the button press, but I
am having problems with the qualification for the window to be opened.

I want it to open the window and pull up the current transaction, but
it will not be the last ID.

I thought it might be the CURRENTWIND keyword, but I cant get it to
work.

Scheduling Crystal Reports

2008-04-09 Thread Susan Palmer
Hi Everyone,

We have been using CrystalDesk for nearly two years to automatically email
crystal reports to our customers. It has been great for the most part.
Well when we upgraded to v7 last year it would no longer work on the
production server but since it still worked on the dev server I just pointed
it to the production database and everything has been fine. (ok, so
production was totally in prod environment)

Then a few weeks ago one of our illustrious client managers agreed to send
out a report to about 40 customer email addresses. I was hesitant at first
since that's a fair amount of email address data. But it worked well
for a few days. Then things started to go haywire with other reports that
ran fine. We had failed completions and all sorts of wierd things. Then we
had a report attach to the wrong email, not good, but luckily no harm done
... whew!

Finally I took all the email addresses out of that offender (which I will
always blame the problems on that report) and things started to settle down
but not completely. So now we only use it to send to internal people and
someone forwards the reports to customers. Since we send out about 30 a day
to customers I need to be able to rely on what we're using.

Now I'm planning to move to a crystal report scheduler that is more robust,
Crystal Server XI. We have other reports that are generated from non-Remedy
applications and I was asked if that scheduler could possibly work.

Are any of you using FLUX scheduler to email crystal reports? I know that
we use it on unix (solaris) server.

Thanks for your input,
Susan

Database cursor sharing

We have two systems - both on Solaris logical servers, both on the same
box. Both have remote Oracle databases. (7.1 001 for Solaris w/Oracle,
IM 7.03)

Dev = faster response time (saving an Incident takes 9 seconds)
QA = very slow response time (saving an Incident takes 65 seconds).

These two systems are - as far as we know - identical. However, when
debugging the system we have found that the fast (dev) system is
executing the following oracle server side parameters during a save:

ALTER SESSION set CURSOR_SHARING = EXACT
ALTER SESSION set CURSOR_SHARING = FORCE

This is NOT happening on the QA server.

Both servers have the "Oracle-Cursor-Sharing: FORCE" parameter set in
the ar.conf file and the corresponding appropriate setting is
established in Oracle (and we've checked these like 9000 times).

Anyone know what setting/config would make Remedy do this to Oracle?

Re: Server Group

2008-04-09 Thread Joe D'Souza
Yes it does appear like something is failing. I didn't have any issues with
propagating the cache across the secondary servers in 6.3 and 7.0. Haven't
as yet set up any server groups in 7.1 so it may be a 7.1 issue?

If this is a dev server where 'not much' may get written to logs, I'd
suggest turning on your API logs to see what API's are triggered at the time
the signal is sent from the primary server to the secondary servers.. I do
not remember what signal you are supposed to expect but comparing the
signals that have ran against the primary servers with those that have run
on the secondary servers may give you an idea..

I agree. The entry below should indicate that arsignal has been triggered
to get the new definitions but it appears to be false or not working as it
has appeared several times in the log but the definition has not been
updated on the secondary server.

  Guess I’ll open a ticket with support…

  Thanks for the help, Joe.

With the last log entry appearing about 30 seconds after I hit save on
the change.

However, the change does not appear to have take affect on the secondary

Re: Regular Reports

2008-04-09 Thread Carey Matthew Black
Lisa,

I may be all wrong on this... but... I think the Stats that ARS
reporting does only show up when you do a "*.rep" output. ( or maybe
it is that when you select CSV,ARX that it only dumps the data?) At
any rate... I think you need to not use "output to CSV" to see the
statistics show up because the "Stats" output lines are not really in
a "CSV format". If it did output the "stats" then the "CSV file" would
be "broken".

Column1, Column2,...,ColumnN
000555,"Bob",...,"other stuff"
000556,"Bob2",...,"other stuff2"
...
SUM: 123456
000557,"Bob3",...,"other stuff5"
000558,"Bob4",...,"other stuff5"
...

However in "Report" format (rep) that kind of file would be fine. You
just loose the quotes and comma separators between columns.

So try the other output format and see if the calculations show up then.

"Inserts into a Long Raw column while cursor_sharing is
enabled can cause the BMC Remedy Action Request System® (AR System®)
server
thread to hang. Such inserts are commonly done as part of the Email Engine
activity when attachments are included in email messages.

To avoid any impact from this issue, AR System server code explicitly
disables
cursor_sharing (that is, sets it to exact) when doing such an insert into
a Long Raw
column. However, it first needs to know that the current setting is not
already
exact.

To get the current setting, the AR System server looks in the ar.conf
file,
where the cursor_sharing setting must be set to reflect the init.ora
settings from
Oracle. If the ar.conf file does not reflect the init.ora settings, then
the AR System
server assumes the value is already exact and, therefore, will not reset
it when
doing inserts into Long Raw columns.

Subject

Re: Escalation will not run?

2008-04-09 Thread Thad K Esser
I believe with 6.3 there was a patch level that had bugs with escalations.
You'd get "ghost" escalation threads, and you could only see them by
looking at weirdness in the logs. What I did was to disable escalations
(server config), which would shut down all the escalation threads. Give
it half a minute to "take", and then re-enable escalations. Its still not
warm and fuzzy, but it keeps you from having to experience the cold
emptiness of a server restart. Metaphorically speaking.

I don't remember which patch fixed it, but it did get fixed at some point.

Yeah, Lisa, there are a few things you have to do to get it to spit the
output out.

I don't remember all of them, and I'm at a new job with a new instance
of remedy, so I don't have any old code to look at.

On your window open active link, are you specifying a run criteria?

Report Type: ARSystem

Name:

Destination:

Operation: You might need to try the different options here to see if
one works

Location: Embedded (or Report Form)

Entry IDs:

I remember that last time I did this, I could not get the data to spit
out. There was something little that I was missing.

I was wondering if I could run this with the regular Report feature in

Right now I have to create a view form and a view in the database and
then I can run a report.

Select REGION, SUM(CHARGE) from VPN_CHARGEBACKS_IMPORT

Is there anyway to run a report on the original form and grab the Region

I agree. The entry below should indicate that arsignal has been triggered to
get the new definitions but it appears to be false or not working as it has
appeared several times in the log but the definition has not been updated on
the secondary server.

Guess I'll open a ticket with support.

Thanks for the help, Joe.

Is development cache mode on, on any of these servers? If it is on I think
you will not notice the change until you log out and log in..

The entries you see below are written to the log only after arsignal has
been triggered to read the new definitions..

Ok, I made a change with the server group logging on. Here's what I see on
the secondary server:

 /* Wed Apr 09 2008 10:04:00.5253 */ Server  executing
recache request

 /* Wed Apr 09 2008 10:04:30.5362 */ Server  noting

09 2008 10:32:06.4183 */ Server executing
recache request

With the last log entry appearing about 30 seconds after I hit save on the
change.

However, the change does not appear to have take affect on the secondary
server. Yes, I've cleared my AR cache. The change does appear on the primary
server where it was made.

I can force the change by running "arsignal -r servername"

Re: Configuring Multiple AR Email Engine

2008-04-09 Thread Hall Chad - chahal
Yes it is possible to configure an email engine to only process specific
mailboxes. But more likely configuring your email engine to use a
private queue, and then configuring that queue to have a Max Thread
setting as high as the total number of mailboxes, will achieve what you
want. That will put each mailbox on its own thread and its much easier
to do than setting up multiple email engine installations. There's not
much to this. Just create a private queue, specify its max threads,
configure the corresponding RPC value in emaildaemon.properties. Restart
everything and you're good to go.

If you really need to break the email engine(s) out onto separate
servers you can do that. I have my email engine on a dedicated server
that doesn't even have AR Server on it. That's not very hard but there
are a few tricks. If you still need more than one email engine for some
reason, I'm not sure if you can install multiple instances on the same
box. If not, you can use separate boxes and then configure each one to
only monitor certain mailboxes in the emaildaemon.properties file.

Sorry I'm not providing much exact detail. If you're interested in
specifics on one of these options I'd be happy to elaborate.

Hi All,

I would like to know whether we can configure multiple Email Engine
for a single server which will work as one of the AR Email Engine will
handle incoming mails coming into Remedy and other will handle
Outgoing mails which will help reduce load on the server. So it this
possible as we are currently facing lots of issues with the mails as
daily our storage of incoming mails and outgoing mails total count is
4000 - 5000 .We are using AR Email Engine 6.3 and AR Server 6.3 on
Solaris with Unix platform

Also would like to know if we can change the Email Daiemon properties
to set this up..Let me know your suggestions on this ..

Re: Escalation will not run?

2008-04-09 Thread Sokol, Brian
Hi Joe,

No that was not it. The escalation is a set field. It compares the
values of a single field on each table. There are many matches. I had to
restart ARS to get it to work. I'd say that is a bug.

Re: Server Group

Is development cache mode on, on any of these servers? If it is on I think
you will not notice the change until you log out and log in..

The entries you see below are written to the log only after arsignal has
been triggered to read the new definitions..

However, the change does not appear to have take affect on the secondary

OK I tried that. Yes there are plenty of records in the form. I already
had escalation logging turned on and it states Failed Qualification. In
the SQL log I can see the select statement. No errors.

If the escalation log says failed qualification I assume this is
referring to the Run If statement. Is that correct.

Configuring Multiple AR Email Engine

Re: Direct ARS/Remedy to new SQL database on separate server - how to

2008-04-09 Thread Kaiser Norm E CIV USAF 96 CS/SCCE
If it's Microsoft SQL, all you should have to do is detach the database
from the current DB server, install SQL on the new server, attach the
database, create the *arsystem* account with the associated password,
and make *arsystem* the owner of the database.

Then go to your ar.cfg file and change the reference to the Sybase
server to the hostname of the new DB server, and away you go.

I can flesh these steps out more if you need more detail.

Hi Eric,

The ARPen* files are temporary files which are created by the server
when large queries are performed.

They will typically be cleaned up by the server once the query has
completed, but there are occasions, such as if the server crashes, when
they may become orphaned from the server process and be left lying
around.

As long as the files are old (i.e. not a query currently in progress)
there's no reason why you shouldn't delete them.

Cheers...Jo

The disk space on our server is approaching a threshold level.
Our AIX guys noticed that there are a number of files in the /tmp folder
which are named ARpen*, which are owned by the account our Remedy system
uses. These total close to a Gig between them. They've asked if these
can be deleted.

I've looked at these. They vary in size from under 1 K to over
23 Meg, and have dates ranging from 2005 through last Monday. For more
than 90% of these, the content is binary. The remaining files seem to
contain lists of case numbers, statuses, work logs, or attachments.

Does any one have any idea what the purpose of these files is,
what may be responsible for creating them, and if they can safely be
deleted?

Re: How to upgrade AR system & ITSM apps from 6.x to 7.x

2008-04-09 Thread Rick Cook
I'll make this short and simple. You do not upgrade. The differences
between v6 and v7 of the applications are as night and day. To migrate from
v6 to v7, you need to install v7 fresh on a new server, and then figure out
whether you want to migrate your existing customizations and code over.

Once you get to that point, there are many here with the experience to help
you over the bumps.

Re: Regular Reports

2008-04-09 Thread Gary Opela (Corporate)
Lisa,

Have you tried creating a report that does the sum for you. Create it in
the User tool, then attach it to a window-open active link that is
attached to a button.

I think this will work for you, that is, if I understand correctly what
you are trying to do.

I was wondering if I could run this with the regular Report feature in
our AR System. (Windows 2003, Oracle 10i DB, ARS 7.0.01 Patch 6).

Right now I have to create a view form and a view in the database and
then I can run a report.

Is there anyway to run a report on the original form and grab the Region
and the SUM of the charges? (we do not have Crystal Reports yet)

Ok, I made a change with the server group logging on. Here's what I see on
the secondary server:

recache request

 /* Wed Apr 09 2008 10:04:30.5362 */ Server  noting

from remote server to recache definitions

09 2008 10:32:06.4183 */ Server executing
recache request

With the last log entry appearing about 30 seconds after I hit save on the
change.

However, the change does not appear to have take affect on the secondary
server. Yes, I've cleared my AR cache. The change does appear on the primary
server where it was made.

I can force the change by running "arsignal -r servername"

This has worked before so I'm assuming (yes, yes, I know about assume) that
it still is. Turning on the logging is a great idea. Not sure why I didn't
think of that.let me do that and see what happens.

Thanks

2008-04-09 Thread Darrell Reading
Look for a core file, it should be in your start up directory, and what other
logging do you have on? From what I saw, it could be that all your threads
where busy, but I believe we need more information. Could you let us know how
many threads you are running, OS, DB, CPU's and Memory? Has this happened
often, if not, has the system started slowing down. Send any information that
you might think we could use.

2008-04-09 Thread Eric Cleereman (IT)
Hi All,

We're currently running Remedy 6.3 Patch 21 with an Oracle 9i database
on AIX 5.2.0.0.

The disk space on our server is approaching a threshold level. Our AIX
guys noticed that there are a number of files in the /tmp folder which
are named ARpen*, which are owned by the account our Remedy system uses.
These total close to a Gig between them. They've asked if these can be
deleted.

I've looked at these. They vary in size from under 1 K to over 23 Meg,
and have dates ranging from 2005 through last Monday. For more than 90%
of these, the content is binary. The remaining files seem to contain
lists of case numbers, statuses, work logs, or attachments.

Does any one have any idea what the purpose of these files is, what may
be responsible for creating them, and if they can safely be deleted?

arserverd crash - signal 10

2008-04-09 Thread Aaron Keller
Does anyone know what what the different signals (in arerror.log) mean
when arserverd stops? Specifically, signal 10? The only one I know is
the manual shutdown - 15.

This has worked before so I'm assuming (yes, yes, I know about assume) that
it still is. Turning on the logging is a great idea. Not sure why I didn't
think of that.let me do that and see what happens.

Have you configured all the servers and their IP's in the ar.conf file?

Does the Server Ranking form have all the necessary entries for all the
servers? Have those been configured correctly?

Did you try taking the Server Group log? I'd suggest turn on this log for
all the servers, make a definition change and see what gets reported to the
logs...

J.T.,

What version of ARS are you using?

If you have set the server group properly, post ARS 6.3, these changes
automatically propagate. You do not have to create filters on the Server
events form to run the arsignal command like you had to do after checking
server events for changes in forms, and workflow..

Opening Request submission form in SRM console directly from a URL

2008-04-09 Thread Jiri Pospisil
++
Please Read The Disclaimer At The Bottom Of This Email
++

Hi listers,

we have a requirement to be able to open a request submission form within the
Service Request console screen directly from a URL.
It is easy enough to open the Service Request console, but user then still
needs to search through the service catalogue for the request and select it.
I am looking for a way to do this automatically, so that we can provide a URL
that will take the user directly to the request form rather than to the
category browser where they still have to look for the desired request type.
I was trying to build a URL which will pass the request name as a parameter and
store it to a field, but this does not seem to work (works for other forms, but
in case of SRS:ServiceRequestConsole from, the parameter seems to get cleared
out). The URL I am using is:
http://remedywebserver/arsys/forms/server.name.com/SRS%3AServiceRequestConsole/enduser/?F301417400=SRName
After the console opens, the URL changes to
http://remedywebserver/arsys/forms/server.name.com/SRS%3AServiceRequestConsole/enduser/?cacheid=49de6a0f
and as you can see the parameter is gone.

Our environment is ARSystem 7.0.01 (patch 005), Mid-Tier 7.0.01 (patch 005),
SRM 2.0.00
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: What does thie error mean??

2008-04-09 Thread David Sanders
Hi Chris

This error means that the server does not recognize itself by the name you
have connected as. For example, say your server name is abc123 but you have
a DNS entry allowing you to connect to it as remsvr1, the server does not
know that this is an alias for itself. It assumes that remsvr1 is a remote
server.

To solve this problem you need to add a line to your ar.cfg/ar.conf file as
follows:

IP-Name: remsvr1
