Re: Auto Ticket Creation

Sucheta,
Not sure I understand your question/request. Are you asking about
integration using the web that creates tickets OR are you asking about the
ability to generate tickets automatically within Remedy based on certain
events?

Suggestion: ARS List awards - Another category..

2008-08-15 Thread Joe D'Souza
Just for popularizing people who post job advertisements, may I suggest a
category for recruiters who post ads here regularly that consultants had a
pleasant experience with.. Meaning the job/project/engagement and its benefits
met a consultants expectations.. This would help us consultants and those
looking for new engagements some sort of a benchmark to filter posted
opportunities..

Through my past engagements I have had some very good experiences and
fortunately very few not so good experiences (just 1 that I can think of) with
some consulting companies or recruiters and it would be nice to get a feeler of
some of the regular Remedy headhunters out there in the market..

Cheers

Re: Null Reported Date ARS7

2008-08-15 Thread MCrawford
Can you clarify step one? I am exporting the following from
HPD:Helpdesk to an ARX file.

1 Incident ID
2 Reported Date
3 Submit Date

I open the import tool, and load the form and data. I click 'Add
all'. From here I would think I would have to change the mappings so
that Reported Date = Submit Date, but following your steps I just
change the preference settings to update records and click the start
import button. It gives me the following errors:

Thanks Axon. I will keep these in mind. We'll be using
the same settings.

There is some confusion about the following oracle
setting:
NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS

For unicode (oracle) databases, 7.0.1 install guide
says it should be set to CHAR, 7.1 install guide says
it should be set to BYTE.

I'm wondering if one of them is a typo or each one is
correct for each version.

We also had issues changing this setting in oracle. We
tried "ALTER.." to change it, but didn't seem to stick
even after restarting oracle. We also tested setting
this as a shell variable and doing sqlplus, but our
session doesn't pick it up. However, I believe this is
a server side setting.

Please say hi to aiping t. and mike f.

Re: CI Viewer Problems

I seem to remember this being MidTier patch relatedand it had to do with
the fact that CI Viewer logs onto the MidTier to retrieve the report, and
non-admins aren't able to log on using two different 'computers' at
onceif you turn on server side logging User you may find that the
attempt to open the CI Viewer causes an error in the log for that user...if
I'm remembering everything correctly there was a Mid-Tier patch that fixed
this problem.

Hello All,
ARS 7.1 Patch 002
Windows

Our CI Viewer has been having serious problems of late.
So, on recommendation, I reinstalled the CIViewer.exe. last night.
Now, as admin, it works perfectly, but... If I log on as any other user
without
admin permissions - the CI Viewer does nothing - "Record can't be displayed
because the Root doesn't exist".
But as admin - no error, CI Viewer works fine and I can view the lone record
using the CI Viewer.
I suspect this is permissions related - has anyone else seen this? Anything
like it?
I am stumped.

Thanks,

Hi Mike

Open the Roles form and search for the CMDB Console User role. See what
permission group is mapped to that Role for Production state - this is the
permission group that you need to add your users to.

Re: Null Reported Date ARS7

2008-08-15 Thread Carey Matthew Black
M.B.

I am sure there is a way to fix these records. And I would guess that
one way would be to do something like this:

1) Export three columns of data from the effected records to an ARX or CSV file.
Field 1 (maybe called 'Request ID', 'Entry ID', 'Call ID' or some
other name)
'reported date'
Field 3 (maybe called 'Create Date', 'Create-date', or some other name)

* Note if you do not want to set 'reported date' = 'Create Date' then
pick any other field you want from the existing record and export that
data instead of Field 3.

2) Use the Import tool to *update* the existing records.
Select the form, select the file that you exported above, and "Map all"
* Note: Configuring the Import tool to update existing records is
found in File(menu) --> Preferences (menu item) --> Duplicate Request
ID (tab) menu of the import tool.

Barring any strange Merge filters on the form then that simple process
should work.

Re: ARS 7.1 install on Oracle with language packs and unicode: any tips, pitfalls?

Thanks a lot William. We already had that setup in
previous installation, but didn't know that app
install would overwrite it.

Good catch.

Null Reported Date ARS7

2008-08-15 Thread MCrawford
Greetings,

About 100 tickets have been created with blank/null reported dates.
This is causing issues with reporting. Most of the tickets were
associated with a single user. I have removed and re-created his
account, and the error appears to be resolved. However, I need to
know if there is a way to fix the erroneous tickets?

Thanks,

M.B.

Re: Major index problem - RESOLVED - with performance/troubleshoot tips because it's Friday

2008-08-15 Thread William Rentfrow
All I can say for sure is this - we are under fairly strict change
control. We know we added the "Oracle-Clob-Storage-In-Row=T" option
after we built the server and did the other steps. This was before
installing the applications.

And we know no one manually changed the ar.conf fileand the only
other thing that changed the ar.conf file was the application installers
for IM, SLM, etc.

One of them must have done it. It's fairly far-fetched to imagine any
other scenario where just one thing in the ar.conf would have changed.

This one was a proverbial hum-dinger to fix. It's an
interesting problem though so I'll go back through it.

Server: ARS 7.1 on Solaris with Incident Management 7.03, SLM
7.1, normal ancillary apps such as AE, EE, MT, etc
4 MT servers on Solaris with Websphere/IBM HTTP server

The original problem: Users were experiencing a "Unique index
violation" when saving an incident. The only failure noted in any of
the logs client or server side was an API -CE entry that said "Fail".

Lesson one: The one I have to re-learn every couple of years -
always ask your users "Were there any other error messages you
received?"

Users will always tell you the LAST error message they got and
not the first necessarily. In this case the answer was "Yes - I got an
RPC timeout message first".

I didn't get that piece of information until day 3 of this
problem.

Lesson two: Sometimes an error is correct.

In my case the unique index error WAS correct. The users were
hitting "Save" and then getting an RPC timeout after 2 minutes or so of
not receiving a response from the AR Server. In the meantime the AR
Server was receiving the Incident and saving it. The user - who had
only seen an RPC timeout message - was still in the "new" mode of the
system and hit save again which correctly generated the unique index
violation message. The instanceID (179) would cause this error - so
would the Incident Number. Both were duplicated in the second save
attempt and Oracle said "NO."

Lesson three: If you are using Oracle remotely with Remedy it
is imperative you switch to the in-row CLOB storage option.

Once I figured #2 above out I had to deal with the performance
issue. We had previously had major performance problems on our QA
server. The symptoms were a to
deal with - all you saw in any of the log files was a huge gap while
Oracle was doing transactions. Literally nothing was going on.

When we built our PRD system we switched the in-row option
immediately after installing the AR Server - then we installed the apps.
The apps were nice enough to "correct" our setting back to out-of-row
and we didn't notice until this happened. We ended up doing an
emergency re-structuring of the database once I was able to show again
in the logs there were long, long gaps (like 10 seconds total per
transaction) in the Submit/Modify processes.

Lesson four: All that improved the problem but still didn't fix
it. After much more log reading and noticing very small gaps ( < 50 ms)
between API transactions I upped the fast/list queues by 25% to 16 each.
We run 3000 incidents/day through this system with several hundred
users.

Voila. Problem fixed.

Mustenjoy..weekend.

Major index problem - RESOLVED - with performance/troubleshoot tips because it's Friday

2008-08-15 Thread William Rentfrow
This one was a proverbial hum-dinger to fix. It's an interesting
problem though so I'll go back through it.

Server: ARS 7.1 on Solaris with Incident Management 7.03, SLM 7.1,
normal ancillary apps such as AE, EE, MT, etc
4 MT servers on Solaris with Websphere/IBM HTTP server

The original problem: Users were experiencing a "Unique index violation"
when saving an incident. The only failure noted in any of the logs
client or server side was an API -CE entry that said "Fail".

Lesson one: The one I have to re-learn every couple of years - always
ask your users "Were there any other error messages you received?"

Users will always tell you the LAST error message they got and not the
first necessarily. In this case the answer was "Yes - I got an RPC
timeout message first".

I didn't get that piece of information until day 3 of this problem.

Lesson two: Sometimes an error is correct.

In my case the unique index error WAS correct. The users were hitting
"Save" and then getting an RPC timeout after 2 minutes or so of not
receiving a response from the AR Server. In the meantime the AR Server
was receiving the Incident and saving it. The user - who had only seen
an RPC timeout message - was still in the "new" mode of the system and
hit save again which correctly generated the unique index violation
message. The instanceID (179) would cause this error - so would the
Incident Number. Both were duplicated in the second save attempt and
Oracle said "NO."

Lesson three: If you are using Oracle remotely with Remedy it is
imperative you switch to the in-row CLOB storage option.

Once I figured #2 above out I had to deal with the performance issue.
We had previously had major performance problems on our QA server. The
symptoms were a to deal with - all
you saw in any of the log files was a huge gap while Oracle was doing
transactions. Literally nothing was going on.

When we built our PRD system we switched the in-row option immediately
after installing the AR Server - then we installed the apps. The apps
were nice enough to "correct" our setting back to out-of-row and we
didn't notice until this happened. We ended up doing an emergency
re-structuring of the database once I was able to show again in the logs
there were long, long gaps (like 10 seconds total per transaction) in
the Submit/Modify processes.

Lesson four: All that improved the problem but still didn't fix it.
After much more log reading and noticing very small gaps ( < 50 ms)
between API transactions I upped the fast/list queues by 25% to 16 each.
We run 3000 incidents/day through this system with several hundred
users.

Voila. Problem fixed.

Mustenjoy..weekend.

Hi,

Users with Read or Floating Read can modify records where their name
appear in the submitter-field.

This is not neccessarily records created by the user in question. When a
record is created, anything can be specified in the submitter-field, at
least if no restrictions has been put there by the application
developer.

As L.J. stated, this all requires that "submitter mode locked" has been
specified for the server.

The following presentation, which I have held at various local RUGs,
will explain many details conserning how licensing works:

Re: ARS 7.1 install on Oracle with language packs and unicode: any tips, pitfalls?

2008-08-15 Thread William Rentfrow
I'd like to add that if your Oracle server is separate from your AR
server you absolutely need to change the CLOB storage option to in-row
or else there are severe performance penalties that are a royal pain in
the neck to troubleshoot.

BMC has a white paper with instructions and an Oracle stored procedure
to complete this taks.

Also, this task must be done after installation of the apps. If you try
doing it before you install the apps and after you install the AR server
the installs "correct" your setting back to the default setting of "F".
I have reported that bug to BMC engineering as recently as yesterday.

There is some confusion about the following oracle

For unicode (oracle) databases, 7.0.1 install guide says it should be
set to CHAR, 7.1 install guide says it should be set to BYTE.

I'm wondering if one of them is a typo or each one is correct for each
version.

We also had issues changing this setting in oracle. We tried "ALTER.."
to change it, but didn't seem to stick even after restarting oracle. We
also tested setting this as a shell variable and doing sqlplus, but our
session doesn't pick it up. However, I believe this is a server side
setting.

Well, the nominations have not been impressive in numbers

2008-08-15 Thread Axton
The two env vars that matter on the remedy server are:
LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8
LANG=en_US.UTF-8

On the oracle side, we use the AL32UTF8 as the character set with all
the NLS stuff set up as America.American.

Yes - we have the identical environment and the same problem. I'm sure
the answer is to upgrade to some more current patch and I believe we are
in the process of that, but for now this is the exact (mis)behavior I
have seen for a long time.

Hello All,

We are trying to implement the Password Management functionality in 7.1
Patch 002.

I have enabled the functionality and it works well, as long as you don't
try it via the mid-tier, I checked and our mid-tier is also 7.1 Patch
002.

Even though for testing, I set a test account to "Require Password
Change on Next Login", it doesn't prompt for password change when
accessing via the mid-tier.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Thanks,

Jase

Re: Permissions question.....

2008-08-15 Thread strauss
Your fundamental decision will be whether to go single-tenancy or
multi-tenancy in the application, since that affects all of the
company-level permissions (not roles) on tickets and work logs. It is
made more complicated by the fact that the multi-tenancy implemented in
ITSM 7 is only half-baked, so it can cause as many problems as it
solves.

ARS 7.1 install on Oracle with language packs and unicode: any tips, pitfalls?

2008-08-15 Thread Rabi Tripathi
Hi all,
After a lot of issues trying to add language packs to
existing ARS 7.1 p2 install, we're starting from
scratch and doing a new install (Solaris , Oracle) to
included most of the language packs available in ARS.

If anybody has gone through this process and can share
any lessons learned, caveats, I would appreciate.

When it comes to internationalization, localization,
I've experienced that because all the settings have to
be just right at multiple levels (OS, database, ARS,
client) it's a challenge to get it to work.

So I'm trying to pick anybody's brain to supplement
reading through the install guides, release notes and
what not.

Thanks in advance.

I stand corrected :)
Pasting is not limited in 6.3p3 but it is in 7.1p3.

Thank you

Re: Permissions question.....

2008-08-15 Thread Danaceau, Chris
In the ITSM Config Guide look at chapter 5 permissions and roles.

Within the application: From the home page click Application
Administration Console, then select the Custom Configuration tab.
Select Foundation, People, People. On any Person Record click the
Login/Access Details tab, then click the Update Permission Groups
button.
You can browse permission groups from the dialog box. As you select
them a description of the abilities will be presented in the text box
below your selection.

Re: I am new to ARS I need help

2008-08-15 Thread Carey Matthew Black
Frank,

When you type character by character I think the UT always limited the
total length to the size of the field. (I just tested a v6.3 patch 3
UT and it limited the number of characters I can type into a field to
16. However, I can paste more than 16 into the field and copy it back
out again too.)

IMHO:
The problem is when you paste a string that is to long for the
remaining space in the field. The Paste operation does not truncate
the string to the (correct) max length of the field after the strings
are added to the field.

And while it "might have always been that way" it does not make it any
less of a bug in my book.

Re: I am new to ARS I need help

2008-08-15 Thread Frank Caruso
We just started playing with WUT (Windows User Tool) 7.1p3 and found that it
behaves differently from 6.3 WUT in that it restricts the number of
characters that can be entered into a field based on the actual field size
(database Size). So if you have a field defined as 50 and try and paste (or
type) in more it blocks the extra characters. This is happening on both
Regular and Display only forms.

Not sure what version of WUT you are on but maybe that is a solution.
