SRM - AOT with template

2008-09-12 Thread Raido Oja
Hi,

In SRM 2.2, I have created a service request that uses an AOT with an
attached template. However I can't see that the fields preset in the
template are being applied on the incident. Should I assume that somethings
gone wrong with the install? My understanding was that if I am registering a
template with the AOT, it will be applied to the incident in addition to the
mapped fields. Can someone confirm that my understanding is correct.

Thanks,

Raido

I modified the installation script at line 4578 and changed this:
_VERSION="${_THIS_VER}SUSE"
to
_VERSION="10SUSE"

Although I haven't gone through the whole install yet, it now seems to
start properly.

Multiple Instance of ARS 6.3 on Shared database

2008-09-12 Thread Icarus4
Hello listers,

I'm considering installing multiple instance of ARS 6.3 on the same box.
Instances will share the same database.

Anyone did a performance comparison between single and multiple instances?
Does it bring a better usage of the server resources?

Thanks for sharing.

One thing to consider is that "sharing the same database" appears to
imply that you'll be putting both instances into the same server group -
and server groups aren't supported for multiple instances on the same
physical server.

Help parsing a string in a set fields

2008-09-12 Thread Shoemaker, Gary
I am trying to do set a field to specific format using the functions but can
not get exactly what I want. It is a 5 character string and needs to end up
as a 5 character string. The pattern is that I leave all leading 0 and pad
right up to 3 - the number of leading 0 if leading is more than 1.
Any suggestion on this would be greatly appreciated.
12566 goes to 12000
11456 goes to 11000
10456 goes to 1
09456 goes to 09000
08456 goes to 08000
00956 goes to 00900
00096 goes to 00090
9 goes to 9

However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results.

Re: Can't install ARS 7.1 on SLES 10

2008-09-12 Thread Marty.Thorin
Dear James:

The bug simple. It does a character comparison rather than a number
comparison. Compare the strings "5.3" versus "5.10". The fives match.
The dots match. Three is bigger than one. Thus you are trying to
install a lower version on a higher server. I just replaced the
comparison with 1=1 to get it to do what I wanted to happen -- Do it
anyway!

Under Solaris there is a similar bug in the disk space logic that I also
'fix'. (After manually checking, of course.)

Have a great weekend,
Thorin

 James,

Thats because of a bug in the arsystem install script.. open that script
and there is a line that declares the minimum solaris version.. change
that from 5.10 to one version lower than what you are at, and rerun the
install..

For some reason the installation script interpretes 5.10 as 5.1 which is
why it quits the install with that error. I had faced a similar error
while installing ARS 6.3 on Solars a few years ago and thats exactly
what I did to tweak the script and force it to work..

HOWEVER, make sure that the version of Solaris you are on is compatible
to ARS 7.1 before performing that tweak..

Hope this helps ya..

Raido, I don't think it works that way. Are you certain that the fields that
you are mapping questions to belong to the template form? Or do they belong
to the Incident form?

My understanding is that you create the Incident, which then kicks off the
template associated with it.

Re: Multiple Instance of ARS 6.3 on Shared database

2008-09-12 Thread Webster, Basil
We used to have this type of config on a reporting server before. One AR
server was updated weekly (SQL restore) and the other monthly.

I our case there were only read actions happening. The server that it
was on was not a very wow machine (2 x 2ghx CPU, 4 gb RAM) and it
handled it. At the time our DB was at it's largest 80 gb. We used a 3rd
party app as a scheduler which called Crystal reports. We have long
since gone the business objects route so have broken the multi AR
server.

What are you looking at using your server for? Is the server the app and
db server altogether? What DB sizes are you looking at? You can always
put the screws on at db level to use certain cpu's or only a limited
amount or RAM (depending on the functions).

Kind Regards,
Basil

Increasing Entry ID Length

2008-09-12 Thread Smith, Ron [TBC]
Hi all,
Wanted to bounce this off the group to see if there is an easy and safe
way to increase the size of the Entry-ID Field (1). We are currently at
a length of six on the Homegrown helpdesk app, and after 10 + years
using it, we are about to roll over ID# 99. What I want to do is to
increase it to a length of 8. Problem is that the existing ID's do not
pad out to the full 8 digits. Is there any utilities out there that

Re: SRM - AOT with template

2008-09-12 Thread Raido Oja
Thanks,

So even if I register that template with the AOT this does not mean that the
template will be automatically applied when an Incident is created from a SR
? I thought I could just specify the classification etc. in the template so
I don't need to map all the fields.

Then what is the point of registering the template with the AOT ?

Re: Help parsing a string in a set fields

2008-09-12 Thread Chintan Shah
Hi Gary,

Alright..here is the answer for
00956 goes to 00900

If the field you are using is called "Assigned To" then,

An active link with "Run If" of

('Assigned To' LIKE "00%")  AND ( (NOT ('Assigned To' LIKE "000%")) AND (NOT
('Assigned To' LIKE "%")))

and the "If" Action(in sequence) should be
1. set fields
    LEFTC($Assigned To$, 3)
2. set fields
   RPADC($Assigned To$, 5,  "0")

I hope you can figure out the last 2 scenarios now(tweaking the above one).

Being a newbie in remedy, I would like to know from rest of list if there is a
more optimized way of doing this (if it can be done with only 1 active link).

I hope this helps.

Thanks
Chintan.

Hi Gary,

How about this.

As you have leading zeros you must have the numbers in a character field.
Copy them into an integer field to drop the leading zeros and then copy back
to a character field and apply the following logic by doing a character
count.

If there is one character left rpad four zeros

If there are two characters rpad by three zeros and replace the last
character with a zero.

If there are three characters left rpad by two zeros and replace the last
two characters with zeros

If there are four characters left rpad by one zeros and replace the last
three characters with zeros

If there are five characters left replace the last three characters with
zeros

Re: Increasing Entry ID Length

2008-09-12 Thread Craig Carter
You may want to consider setting it to 0. We have one of our forms in
our system set to 0 with a prefix. That basically gives you ISS1, ISS2,
ect, and it automatically grows one character when it needs to ISS10,
ISS100, ISS1000, etc.

Since it sounds like your IDs are all numeric and you are approaching
99, setting it to zero should effectively cause it to roll over to
100 without any problem and it may also benefit you since you may
have associations to those original IDs depending on how that home-grown
app was built. If you arbitrarily go in and convert all of them and add
leading zeros, you could break those associations.

I'm not sure if converting an existing fixed size to 0 is possible but
it could be the magic bullet you are looking for.

Re: Help parsing a string in a set fields

2008-09-12 Thread Rockwood, Julie
Hi Gary,

Along the same line of thought, except that once you've copied your string to
an integer, you may as well work with the integer. This can be implemented with
5 active links or filters.

1. Set ZTmpInteger to OldString and set NewString to NULL

2. If ZTmpInteger <10 then set NewString to OldString

3. If ZTmpInteger>9 AND ZTmpInteger<100 then set NewString to LEFT($
OldString$, 4) + "0"

4. If ZTmpInteger > 99 AND ( ZTmpInteger < 1000)then set NewString to
LEFT($ OldString$, 3) + "00"

5. If ZTmpInteger > 999 AND ( ZTmpInteger < 1)then set NewString to
LEFT($ OldString$, 2) + "000"

BTW, are you going to UserWorld this year?

When you open the form (window open), are you initializing the view
field to $DEFAULT$ ?

We have Active Links that initialize our view fields to $DEFAULT$ when
opened (you obviously have to have the attribute set to the URL) and
they appear to still work even when I open them in search mode.

I modified the installation script at line 4578 and changed this:
_VERSION="${_THIS_VER}SUSE"
to
_VERSION="10SUSE"

Although I haven't gone through the whole install yet, it now seems to

Dear James:

The bug simple.  It does a character comparison rather than a number
comparison.  Compare the strings "5.3" versus "5.10".  The fives match.  The
dots match.  Three is bigger than one.  Thus you are trying to install a lower
version on a higher server.  I just replaced the comparison with 1=1 to get it
to do what I wanted to happen -- Do it anyway!

Under Solaris there is a similar bug in the disk space logic that I also
'fix'.  (After manually checking, of course.)

 James,
Thats because of a bug in the arsystem install script.. open that script and
there is a line that declares the minimum solaris version.. change that from
5.10 to one version lower than what you are at, and rerun the install..
For some reason the installation script interpretes 5.10 as 5.1 which is why it
quits the install with that error. I had faced a similar error while installing
ARS 6.3 on Solars a few years ago and thats exactly what I did to tweak the
script and force it to work..
HOWEVER, make sure that the version of Solaris you are on is compatible to ARS
7.1 before performing that tweak..
Hope this helps ya..

Re: Increasing Entry ID Length

2008-09-12 Thread Joe DeSouza
The only problem with that approach is the sort order gets messed up.. Since
the Entry ID is a character field the sort order would be something like
1
10
2
3
4
5
6
7
8
9

That sort of sucks sometimes. You can sort of overcome that by changing your
sort order of the form to the Create date and have the request id's sorted out
on a result sequentially but there is sometimes that odd exception where the
create date of two consecutive records are not what should be expected..

I'm not sure if converting an existing fixed size to 0 is possible but
it could be the magic bullet you are looking for.

much faster than going through the ARS server.)

However, while you are at it... I would suggest that you change the

Re: SRM - AOT with template

2008-09-12 Thread Sabyson Fernandes
Raido,

The template should be applied to the incident when the incident is created.
This is done via a filter. If you had your categorizations fields populated on
the incident template, then these fields should be populated on the incident
form when instantiated.

Do you have any fields on the incident filled in via the template?

Did you upgrade from a previous version of SRM? There is a bug when an upgrade
was done, that the SRD question mappings or template values would not get
applied to SRD's created in older versions of SRM.

Re: Increasing Entry ID Length

2008-09-12 Thread Craig Carter
Since they are all numeric, you may be able to create an associated
integer field you could use for the sort but I agree, this can be a pain
at times with character fields. One of the other downsides is trying to
parse a Request ID like from another string (ie; subject line in an
Email--which we ran into the first time ours rolled over). If you are
searching for a Request ID in a string, it could be varying lengths so
you can't simply assume 15 characters or in your case, 6 characters.

If you are confident you are not using the existing request ids to
associate with other tables/records, I'd simply increase the field size
and then perform a single SQL update to prefix the correct number of
zeros to all of the existing ID values.

The only problem with that approach is the sort order gets messed up..
Since the Entry ID is a character field the sort order would be
something like

1

10

2

3

4

5

6

7

8

9

That sort of sucks sometimes. You can sort of overcome that by changing
your sort order of the form to the Create date and have the request id's
sorted out on a result sequentially but there is sometimes that odd
exception where the create date of two consecutive records are not what
should be expected..

Subject: Re: Increasing Entry ID Length

Ron,

I would think that any DBA should be able to get the job done. (And
much faster than going through the ARS server.)

However, while you are at it... I would suggest that you change the
length back to 15 so that you never have to do this again.

2008-09-12 Thread Reiser, John J
Not that I know what caused it or corrected it but my email engine came
back to life.
BMC Support had me run the EmailStart.bat in debug mode which indicated
a successful start up but eventually I saw --- "Email Daemon" Exception

I killed that window increased the java heap in the registry to 512 max
and tried to restart Email. Still no joy.

Now, I don't know if this really kick started it or not put I then ran
arsignal -c and the email started flowing. Maybe it was
just a coincidence and the email was taking a few minutes to start but
it "appears" that I am back online and stable.

AR System and the DSL.... Is it just me?

2008-09-12 Thread Carey Matthew Black
All,

Did I miss the memo? (or patch)

The "Definitive Software Library" (DSL) data that ITSM Service Desk
v7.0.02 patch 005 installed with does not appear to have any AR system
(AKA: Remedy) software listed in the DSL.

Is there a patch for the DSL data that includes all of the BMC
software? (I am only seeing "Marimba Tuner" and "Support Magic" on my
"Definitive Software Library Console" for the 'Manufacturer' = "BMC
Software Inc." .)

Is it just me who finds it strange that a software vendor forgets to
add it's own software products to a set of DSL data that it is
distributing? ( Or did I do something wrong and the install is
buggered up in some way?)

Thanks in advance.

Re: Help parsing a string in a set fields

2008-09-12 Thread Thad K Esser
Glad to help.

Working from the inside:
TRUNC($Character Field$) - This takes the character field and
returns an integer without using a separate integer field, effectively
chopping off the leading zeros.

(LENGTH(TRUNC($Character Field$)) / 5) - Dividing the length of
that integer by 5 will return 0 if the length is less than 5, or 1 if it
is exactly 5. This is used to factor in the case when there are no
leading zeroes.

The length of the integer (without the leading zeroes) subtracted
from 6 returns the position of the first non-zero digit. Add the factor
above in.

Take the left part of the original string, up to the position
above. Any needed zeroes are in the original string.

And then Pad the right of that to a length of 5.

Re: AR System and the DSL.... Is it just me?

2008-09-12 Thread Thad K Esser
Its not just you.

I had asked the same thing in a CMDB class and the response was that the
DSL data comes from a Third Party service, and so most BMC software isn't
in it. You'd think they'd take the time to add it in.

This goes back to my CMDB question from a few days ago. It would be
helpful if BMC would use their own products as sample data to demonstrate
how to use the stuff they are trying to sell.

Subject
AR System and the DSL Is it just me?

Re: Server Groups - is load balancer required?

2008-09-12 Thread Charles Baldi
Thanks Carey. BMC finally responded to my query and they confirmed that a
load balancer is *not* required in order to set up a Server Group. However,
they did explain that without the load balancer the clients would have to
connect to the individual server names rather than the group name (what I
expected).

Now we need to figure out why we are getting plugin server timeout errors.

Chuck

Re: Help parsing a string in a set fields

2008-09-12 Thread Rockwood, Julie
Thad,

You are the king of functions. I would never ever want to maintain your code,
yet I, a mere mortal, humbly bow before you in awe of your most amazing and
creative use of set fields.

Glad to help.

Working from the inside:
TRUNC($Character Field$) - This takes the character field and returns
an integer without using a separate integer field, effectively chopping off the
leading zeros.

(LENGTH(TRUNC($Character Field$)) / 5) - Dividing the length of that
integer by 5 will return 0 if the length is less than 5, or 1 if it is exactly
5. This is used to factor in the case when there are no leading zeroes.

The length of the integer (without the leading zeroes) subtracted from
6 returns the position of the first non-zero digit. Add the factor above in.

Take the left part of the original string, up to the position above.
Any needed zeroes are in the original string.

And then Pad the right of that to a length of 5.

Have a great weekend!

Hi Thad,

Thanks a lot

This was what I was trying to figure out from workflow perspective(only 1
active link and no new fields)...however...lol..it will take me a good amount
of time to understand this.

Thanks again..

Regards,
Chintan.

Good thing you asked on a Friday :-)

In one Set Fields, set $Character Field$ to:
   RPAD(LEFT($Character Field$, (6 - LENGTH(TRUNC($Character Field$))) +
(LENGTH(TRUNC($Character Field$)) / 5)), 5, "0")

Hope that helps.

Help parsing a string in a set fields

**
