Remedy Alert

2008-11-20 Thread Frex Popo
Hi everyone,

ARS 7.1
OS Server: MS 2003
OS Client: XP

Does anyone have the white paper for configuring Alerts in a LBE (load
balancing environment) and a non LBE.

I did look at how to configure Alerts in a LBE in the PDF manual and resolved
an issue with users not receiving Alerts. However, some fellow worker called
this morning from some remote building stating he and his group arent receiving
them.

Does anyone have the white paper on how to configure Alerts?

There are few things I could check e.g ports, firewall etc but would like to
read the paper first.

Thanks,
frex

Re: Mid-Tier 7.1.0 Performance Issue -- Tomcat

2008-11-20 Thread Sreenivas, Aravind

We recently observed that when we restart our app/web server
(Tomcat/Apache), majority of the files in the cache directory (*.data
and *.index) are updated (/webapps/ars/cache). We have enabled
persistent cache option and have a few of the biggest forms in
pre-fetch.

1. For forms mentioned in the prefetch xml, am I correct in assuming
that :

a. these are fetched when I start/restart the app/web server AND the
other forms (i.e. those not mentioned in the prefetch xml) are not
fetched?

b. The forms not mentioned in the prefetch are fetched only when a user
tries to access the forms and its out-of-date (assuming Enable check is
switched on)?

2. Is there any way in which we can tell the app/web server not to fetch
forms (either mentioned in prefetch or not) when we restart the app/web
server? We would like it to use what data it already has in the cache
directory before it was restarted, rather than it fetching the forms
from the server again after its restarted.

3. What is the purpose of the USERNAME in the prefetch xml? Should only
an admin username be defined here or will any ID do?

I skimmed through the documentation available, but was unable to get
clarity on the above.

ARS 7.1 patch 003 on solaris

MT 7.1 patch 005 on apache 2_2/tomcat 5-5.5.25

Thanks

Aravind

**

The use of persistent cache is so that you don't have to go fetch again
after the Mid-Tier is restarted.

BMC Remedy Mid Tier performance (persistent cache)

In AR System 7.1, forms currently cached in memory can now be serialized
to a file, which enables these forms to be read back into memory when
the application server hosting the mid tier application is restarted
(after a normal shutdown).

Pre-fetch is for when the forms haven't yet been fetched. It ensures
that the fetching occurs prior to the first request for the form. That
way, users don't have to wait for the Mid-Tier to fetch the form - it's
already there and cached for them.

One of the values I want to push is $Status History.Resolved.USER$. However,

switches it to $Status History.New.USER$. Has anyone seen this before? Any

Re: Re : Remedy Alert

2008-11-20 Thread Hall Chad - chahal
We use a load balancer and we have remote clients. We don't have to map their
remote IP in our ar.cfg file. But we do need the following:

Map-IP-Address:

Map-IP-Address:

Alert-Ignore-Actual-Client-IP: T

I think the second Map-IP-Address line is needed so the users can receive
alerts triggered by workflow on server_2 when they initially registered with
server_1.

The Alert-Ignore-Actual-Client-IP line is needed so that ARServer will send the
alerts to their real IP address instead of the NAT address of your load
balancer.

I should point out that all of our remote clients have routable IP addresses
that are not NAT addresses of a router on their network. I'm pretty sure Alert
wouldn't work if there are two layers of NAT (your load balancer and the
client's router). Your only hope there might be to add Map-IP-Address tags to
map each of their client IPs with their NAT address. I'm just guessing, but
that might work. That could get messy though if they don't have static IPs.

I seem to remember on 6.3 that ARS holds the arerror.log file open so if
you empty (or delete) the file the next time an error is written the

I will leave it to SA to do the work that you suggested and I think that
would be an excellent approach to filter logs and archive them in a

**

Chintan,

Usually error messages get suppressed by that configuration too.

As Claire mentioned maybe there is an exception for this one for some
reason?

What OS are your running your system on?

If its UNIX you can write a cron job to recycle your arerror.log file
periodically by archiving only significant errors in files that could be
stored in a archive folder. And flush the original arerror.log file.. If
you need help on how to do this by writting a .sh script that could be
run from a cron job, let me know..

If its on Windows you could do something similar too - only I',m not
that much of a windows expert so cant think off hand how I might be able
to selectively pick text I want to archive from the log file. Maybe you
could do it with a PERL script on windows.

Re: ARS for non Trouble Ticketing applications

2008-11-20 Thread Pierson, Shawn
There have been a lot of interesting responses, but there have been a few areas
that haven't been covered here that I've either built myself or with a team so
I'll list them below.

A data-driven ARS-based survey application to tie in with a trouble ticket
system, but was created generically enough to tie in with anything. It rivaled
BMC's ITSM survey application, and was completely ARS-based unlike many others
out there. Basically, I had a view form with a list of questions show up on a
table field, and an attribute on each question that caused different types of
fields to become visible for each question, so for example if the survey was
set up with a scale of 1 - 10 type of question, a radio button with that scale
would show up, or if it was a text question, I'd give a textbox. It was pretty
cool, at least I thought so.

Another was a telecom provisioning system. Eventually, I was able to work with
some other teams to get this really cool, so that the POS (Point Of Sale)
system would create the record in Remedy, then Remedy (via a custom DLL I wrote
in VB6) could interface with applications to request phone service from the
major telecoms. So for example, if the POS system passed an invalid address to
me in Remedy, Remedy would use some calls to the DLL via Active Links using OLE
to pull back potential address suggestions from the postal database, and prompt
the technician responsible for this to select a correct address or completely
reject the service request.

I also built a sort of dispatching applications to send trucks out to people's
houses to work on their lines, and integrated it with mapquest so I could
provide a view field on the form that automatically pulled in the fields for
the customer's address and then displayed a map based on that information.
Later, we purchased an application to display maps and generate routes based on
the list of customers assigned to a specific representative (we had a list of
zip codes that a technician serviced in a table to automatically assign them
work), and I had Remedy pass the addresses to that other application, which
then generated a route automatically.

Just to get practice, I've built a family-tree type of application that I
haven't finished, but was mostly working. It was sort of cumbersome due to the
limitations of ARS, so I never finished it. Also for practice I've built
simple translator applications that make usage of web services.

I hope these are some good examples. I could go into more detail on some of
them, but a few of these were quite a while ago. Mostly, I've built
applications that cover what ITSM does, primarily trouble ticketing, some
change management, and some CMDB-type functions. Still, you can do pretty much
anything that requires a front end and a database. You're not going to be
writing the next great game for the Xbox360, but you can either create or
integrate with most business applications.

Actually this is available thru email (it is a standard ListServ command). You
just have to send it to the List Server instead of the list itself.

Command line usage of aradmin.exe to export 'specific' filters...

2008-11-20 Thread Joe DeSouza
Hello listers,

I would like to know if anyone has used the aradmin.exe to export from the
command line a list of filters that I have queried for and save the definition
file in an XML format.

The aim of my operation is to edit this def file for all filters that contain
set fields actions from a SQL Command. Its not very easy to do it if I save the
filters in a .def definition file format as I will then need to consider the
altered length of the SQL Command and they are over 600 filters so that would
be a pain.

An XML file is free of that format as we do not need to consider length of the
statement.

I have already designed an sql query that pulls the right set of filters that I
need to alter ignoring filters that contain queries to the meta tables and
filters that contain $fieldid$ in its statements, so all I need to know is if
it is possible to use aradmin.exe from the command line to export this set of
filters to an XML definition file.

It could also mean you are running out of Filter-API threads.. I forget what
the option to configure that is in the ar.cfg file, but I could get you that
information in about an hour from the settings I have on my server that fixed a
similar error for me.

Joe,
I know it can be done.
I've done it here and seen it done other places.
I think you have to go to the directory that the AR Server is installed on and
there should be a .exe there that you have to run from a command prompt
(but I'm not 100% on that statement above)
Exact parameters...don't remember...

It's been awhile since I've done this (2 years)
You could always write an API program to do it though too.
I do know that the API commands to export code can be found in the API

Sorry Joe I can't be more help on how to do it, I can just tell you that I know

Hi Joe,

We are on Solaris 10, Arserver 6.03 patch 24.

I will leave it to SA to do the work that you suggested and I think that would
be an excellent approach to filter logs and archive them in a separate folder.
Thanks for the suggestion. If I run into any issues, I will surely let you
know. Thanks for asking.

Chintan,

Usually error messages get suppressed by that configuration too.

As Claire mentioned maybe there is an exception for this one for some reason?

What OS are your running your system on?

If its UNIX you can write a cron job to recycle your arerror.log file
periodically by archiving only significant errors in files that could be stored
in a archive folder. And flush the original arerror.log file.. If you need help
on how to do this by writting a .sh script that could be run from a cron job,
let me know..

If its on Windows you could do something similar too - only I',m not that much
of a windows expert so cant think off hand how I might be able to selectively
pick text I want to archive from the log file. Maybe you could do it with a
PERL script on windows.

Supress Warnings option is not supressing ARERR 9093 because its an error and
not warning. We even restarted server after adding line to config file

Any more ideas? Is upgrade to 7.1, the only available option?

We are currently on Remedy Server -6.03 patch 24.

Add the parameter Supress-Warnings: 9093 in the AR Servers ar.conf file (ar.cfg

I know this might be a very dumb question.

I need to get rid of ARERR 9093 to show up in arerror.log.

Basically, what I need is NOT to log ARERR 9093 in arerror.log

Currently, its logging this almost every 12 seconds make this file too large.

ARERR 9093 - User is currently connected from another machine

How can I do this?

Thanks

Update/Resend Re: Problem with view forms

2008-11-20 Thread Bill Bookers
I had replied to both Fred and Joe, but I never saw my messages go through.
My aplogies if this ends up being a duplicate. (FWIW it seems to work when I
send email to the listserv, but not when I try to post from the list's web
interface)

I ran an arsql.log and searched against one of the view forms. I found that
"ARGetEntry" is searching thusly:

... WHERE C1 = N'1025'

instead of:

WHERE C1 = 10257

According to our DBA, the 'N' serves as a sort of wild-card to allow for
various data types.

We are still leaning toward doing a reinstall of the current ARS version,
using the upgrade option, in hopes that the problem is with "ARGetEntry" and
that a re-install will replace it (and anything else that's broken).

Grooms, Frederick W wrote:
> Before trying to do a reload of ARS I would either do a stop/start of the

I had tried both of these, to no avail.

Joe DeSouza wrote:

I had wondered about the character set changing, e.g. so that the 4-byte
integer in the key field is now read as a 4-byte character field, hence the
truncating of "10257" to "1025" etc. However this occurs across all of the
User and Admin clients, the same ones we've had installed all along. Also
we have always checked the "unicode" box during install. Currently, in
'Server Information' the 'Server Language' says "ENU;WESTERN". This is the
same as our outher servers (which work) and, as far as I knowm, the same as
it's always been.

Thank you!

Re: Command line usage of aradmin.exe to export 'specific' filters...

2008-11-20 Thread Joe DeSouza
Matthew,

Thank you for your quick response..

It is aradmin.exe the same executable that launches the admin tool.

That has command line options and I pretty much know those options but do not
know if they can be used to export a specific filter to a def file and in an
xml format. The default format it does an export in is a def format.

If you go to the AR Admin tool install directory and do a aradmin /? you see
all the options in a gui that will pop up in a couple of seconds after you
execute a request for help. But unfortunately that help is not enough to answer
what I need to know..

I do not think these options have been upgraded since the few upgrades of the
admin tool wherein it was upgraded to be able to spit out xml definitions of
objects..

Cheers

Joe

Hi all

Running aradmin.exe /? Pops a usage string dialog - The options are
listed in the Advanced Guide for 6.3

aradmin -u [-p ] -x
[-w ] [-portnum ]

[-c ] [-s][-o []]

You'll need aradmin -u [-p ] -x
[-portnum ] -e exported.def -l packinglist.xml

To parse an XML packing list, and export all objects defined in that
packing list, use the following command format:
aradmin -u [-p ] -x

Re: Mid-Tier 7.1.0 Performance Issue -- Tomcat

2008-11-20 Thread Joe DeSouza
Aravind,

It uses the persistent cache by default after a restart of the web server
unless the stop of the web server had been caused by a crash - that is my
understanding of persistent cache.

I believe the reason it doesn't use the persistent cache if the web server
crashes is that the crash may have been caused by a corruption in the cache, so
it flushes and rebuilds the cache..

We recently observed that when we restart our app/web server (Tomcat/Apache),
majority of the files in the cache directory (*.data and *.index) are updated
(/webapps/ars/cache). We have enabled persistent cache option and have
a few of the biggest forms in pre-fetch.

1. For forms mentioned in the prefetch xml, am I correct in assuming that :
a. these are fetched when I start/restart the app/web server AND the other
forms (i.e. those not mentioned in the prefetch xml) are not fetched?
b. The forms not mentioned in the prefetch are fetched only when a user tries
to access the forms and its out-of-date (assuming Enable check is switched on)?

2. Is there any way in which we can tell the app/web server not to fetch forms
(either mentioned in prefetch or not) when we restart the app/web server? We
would like it to use what data it already has in the cache directory before it
was restarted, rather than it fetching the forms from the server again after
its restarted.

3. What is the purpose of the USERNAME in the prefetch xml? Should only an
admin username be defined here or will any ID do?

I skimmed through the documentation available, but was unable to get clarity on
the above.

The use of persistent cache is so that you don't have to go fetch again after
the Mid-Tier is restarted.

BMC Remedy Mid Tier performance (persistent cache)
In AR System 7.1, forms currently cached in memory can now be serialized to a
file, which enables these forms to be read back into memory when the
application server hosting the mid tier application is restarted (after a
normal shutdown).

Pre-fetch is for when the forms haven't yet been fetched.  It ensures that the
fetching occurs prior to the first request for the form.  That way, users don't
have to wait for the Mid-Tier to fetch the form - it's already there and cached
for them.

Re: Command line usage of aradmin.exe to export 'specific' filters...

2008-11-20 Thread Joe DeSouza
The problem with that approach would be that I would not be easily able to
create a packing list of 680 odd filters chosen almost randomly with just one
common trait.. they all have set field actions from direct SQL's

Another problem is that it will save the definition file as a .def file and not
.xml which I would rather prefer as I have to do manual edits to the SQL
commands in that def file. These edits will be a lot more difficult to do in a
.def file.

So it is an almost random list of filters that I will have to build a packing
list out of.. and at the end of that there might be no way of exporting it as a
xml definition file

I was hoping to have the option of running aradmin by giving it a filter name
to export and having the option to export that filter to a xml definition file
and then run it again for the next filter and append that to the same def file
and so on and so forth till I export the last filter.. If that was possible I
could have auto written a batch script while spooling the filter list while
running my sql query...

Adding a Group - doesn't appear in Roles form?

Listers,

I created a new regular group on the Groups form. I then went to the Roles
form expecting to see it in the Mapped Group drop-downs. Upon not seeing
it, I rebooted the server and now it appears. Is there a more graceful way
to get it to appear in the Roles form?

Thanks!

the install finished successfully, but no SLM forms appear on the server.
Looking at the install logs, there does not seem to be any errors. It just
reaches a stage where it re-starts the ARSever after doing part of the install

I had previously done the install with patch 5 and it went fine. I have
installed it on patch 8 on the Development server without any problems.
The only difference between the dev server and the QA is, that  there are two

luck.

I somehow had suspected that as I had gone through something similar not more
than 2 weeks ago with the install of SRM. If you do look very closely at the
install logs it does tell you that it found the systems you are trying to
install just prior to the installer exiting with an error. Thats how I traced
my errors with the install of SRM. We had a failed attempt at installing SRM,
and this failed attempt filled up the SHARE Properties form in just the way you
described and though half the workflow and forms didn't get copied the
SHARE:Properties form had everything added to it.. Its funny that thy insert
records into that form before a success return code..

on my QA server, and the install repeatedly fails. It gives the message that
the install finished successfully, but no SLM forms appear on the server.
Looking at the install logs, there does not seem to be any errors. It just
reaches a stage where it re-starts the ARSever after doing part of the install
and then gives the message that the install was succesful and exits. Any ideas
would be greatly appreciated.
I am talking to BMC support regarding this issue, and they seem as stumped as I
am.

ARS 7.0.1 patch 8
Oracle 10
SunOs 5.10
SLM 7.01

I had previously done the install with patch 5 and it went fine. I have
installed it on patch 8 on the Development server without any problems.
The only difference between the dev server and the QA is, that  there are two
servers in QA as part of the server group. I have tried installing after taking
the server out of the server group and doing it as a stand alone server, no
luck.

thank you as always for any help or pointers you can provide.

Yup clear now and I see that Martin has already responded to the list on how to
get that done - which is more close to what you wanted than what I would have
suggested which is basically upgrading it from another available host if any..

** We've installed ARS 7.1 on new application and database hosts and used a
copy the production database to test all functionality.

Now, on the day we actually move to the new hosts we will take a copy of the
database from production which is still 6.3., and put it on the new database
host. Next we will need to upgrade that database to 7.1. In order to do this I
will need to run the 7.1 server install script. However, since this has already
been done on the new ARS hosts I was hoping to find a way to run the install
script to do the database upgrade only, but not copy any files to the ARS host.

Any clearer?

Frank

I'm a little confused with what you want to know.. You say that the server has
already been upgraded. So what is it that you really need to do?

Solaris/Sybase

I have a server that has been upgraded to 7.1. Our upgrade will be done by
taking a copy of the existing production database and copying it to a new
database host. We will then need to upgrade that database to 7.1. We have two
new hosts that already have 7.1 installed with all of the config files set
correctly.

Is there a way to run the server install script so that all it does is upgrade
the existing database but does not touch the currently installed files?

here is the part that's perplexing me all, I can see in the armonitor.log that
plugin.exe was started with success.
I can see plugin.exe running in the task mgr, looks fine.
But the server admin console keeps getting "ARDBCAPPQUERY doesn't exist"
and the overview console keeps getting dbase timeout errors.
I attached a copy of our dev ar.cfg file if anyone wants to take a peek.
We reinstalled server.exe for 7.1 Patch 002 in hopes this would set
arplugin.exe back to original config.
After that didn't work, We have replaced .dlls for ardbcquery.dll in all the
paths for asset/change/incident/cmdb with the .dlls from ITSM 7 Patch 8,
We have ITSM 7 Patch 3 and support suggested those replacements, and it didn't
work either.
Joe mentioned the below on an old thread I found
I added this line and got the plugins to work.

Plugin-Filter-API-Threads: 2 6

Where 2 represents minimum threads and 6 max.. You can set your min and max to
whatever you might want to set it to till you get it working..
Going to try this now in ar.cfg and see if that helps.

Any ideas anyone? I am stumped..

Thanks,

Jase

It could also mean you are running out of Filter-API threads.. I forget what
the option to configure that is in the ar.cfg file, but I could get you that
information in about an hour from the settings I have on my server that fixed a
similar error for me.

Cheers

This means the plugin server crashed.  I either generate a core file or attach
a debugger to the plugin server to see what the stack trace is when it crashed,
then report the results to bmc.  Not sure how/if you w/could do this on
windows.  The plugin server logs may be revealing as to when the error occurred.

 Hello All,

 ARS 7.1 Patch 002
 SQLServer 2003

Our Plugin server crashed on our production box last night and I have
been having similar woes on our dev box for a week without a total crash.
 We discovered "Defect SW00247290—The REMEDY.ARDBC.APPQUERY plug-in
 (ardbcQuery.dll)
intermittently crashes when arplugin.exe is configured for
 multi-threaded
 ARDBC queue."

We have taken the neccessary steps to resolve this issue without
 success.

Reinstalled server.exe 7.1 Patch 002 in hopes plugin.exe would get
 corrected, no success.
Replaced ardbcquery.dll "all over the place" and , restarted, no
 success.
Changed ar.cfg to ensure it was pointing to the correct .dlls, etc.,
partial success here, server admin console came back, but crashed again.
Has anyone else had this problem and resolved it successfully?

 Thanks,

 Jase Brandon
