Capacity Planning

2010-06-16 Thread IT (Amanullah Bashir Ahmed)
Hi there
Version 7.1
How can we do Capacity Planning in BMC Remedy? If I raise an incident or Change
Request with 4 or 5 Work info types how much disk space is required, and how I
will calculate. Please also guide me which document of BMC remedy can help me
in this regard.

Re: Interview Questions - Please help

2010-06-16 Thread Matt Worsdell
Ah Ok, well I'll answer the first one then you just need 33 more replies.

The simple answer is that an Active Link is client side code whereas a
Filter is server side code.

An active link is triggered by the end user interacting with the
application, for example using a button, selecting a menu or diplaying an
entry. A filter is triggered by an action on the server, whether through a
submission, modification, deletion, merge or returning an entry.

In addition to Active Links and Filters there are Escalations which can
trigger server side code, or interact directly based on a timed schedule.

Hi Matt,

I want answers only.

I have gathered most of the questions from Google only.

The 4th question I found in this link
http://www.mail-archive.com/arslist@arslist.org/msg43690.html

Thanks Regards,
Ram Rudra

You want answers to these questions or an opinion on them?

No disrespect to Doug but question 4 is not relevant to how good someone
might be.

Some would be pretty much insulted if asked those questions so who is your
target interviewee? What sort of experience would they have?

Matt

19) What is the primary table in the AR System data dictionary?
20) How does the AR System manage the data you see in Remedy Forms?
21) Without using DSO or EIE, what are your thoughts for providing a
'STANDARDIZED' methodology for interfacing/integrating with Remedy
applications. This customer was actually looking to use C.I.M. or some
other open standard solution to interface with Remedy what you say?
22) How do you troubleshoot AR System server outages to restore access to
the system?
23) How does mid-tier work and where does it fit in the client server
architecture?
24) Describe how filters work? They were actually looking how filters
work
in different phases... which led to the next question.
25) Can you force a filter to fire all actions in the first phase?
26) List all of the possible uses for guides. They were looking for
walking
tables?
27) What is walking tables?
28) when you use CMDBDriver.exe command line utility?
29) When you use arreload.exe command line utility?
30) how you reset the application administrator / demo password if you
forget it?
31) When you use arsignal command line utility?
32) When you use runmacro command line utility?
33) When you use archgid command line utility?

them?

We are currently using IMAP (secure) to talk to the exchange server. The mail
guys just asked if we could switch to mapi. They, apparently, would prefer it
that way. I have no problem telling them it won't work.

When using the email engine on *nix I've always had to use POP3. Typically
this involves using SSL so the transaction is encrypted (POP3 is very insecure
without it).

MS Exchange accounts can be set to allow for POP3 access. In larger companies
it is often required to set one server aside as the Special pop3 server and
firewall it off/lock it down so only the server(s) that need to access it can
get to it.

I don't believe you can use the email engine with MAPI on Linux. The MAPI
implementation requires a JNI library to call MAPI functions that is provided
as a dll (eg armapi71.dll). This is only supplied with a Windows email engine,
there is no Unix/Linux equivalent.

Re: Interview Questions - Please help

2010-06-16 Thread Matthew Perrault
Memory check (I think I'm over thinking this)
What about Phase 3 actions in a filter?
For some odd reason I was thinking that the `! only worked for phase 2 actions
like push fields.
Yet then I started thinking that no, it worked for Run Process and
Notifications too.
Which is it?
I can't remember (and yes I'm being lazy by not looking it up in the doco).

Maybe a better question would be to have someone describe the different phases
and the different items that normally occur in them.

Also,
Rather than having just a list of questions that can be answered in a few words
or 1 sentence and the answers easily looked up and memorized.
Instead look at asking them about the projects they've worked on, how they
went, the challenges they faced and how they overcame them.
The other thing you may want to think about is a gradual increase in difficulty
of questions.
If they answer X well, then ask Y which would be a little harder, then ask Z
which would be a little harder than Y, and so on.
And if they can answer some of the more difficult questions, then asking about
T, B, and H tables may be a waste of time, as they would most likely already
know that.

HTH,
Matt P.

Re: Interview Questions - Please help

2010-06-16 Thread Jay Rohrer
Ram,
Are you the interviewer or the interviewee? If you are the interviewer, I
doubt you will be able to sufficiently
evaluate a candidate just by knowing the answers. My current manager has
stopped doing any part of the technical interview because he realizes that his
employees are better equipped. If you are on the receiving end of these
questions, memorizing the answers will not help you as I will find you out in
about 5 minutes. I recently had a candidate who knew the filter phasing a bit
too well. After a couple of more questions I realized that he had memorized
every aspect of phasing, probably because it is such a common question.

We have also come up with a technical test where you sit in front of the tools
and have to create a little application. Those who know their stuff finish
in less than 20 minutes and those that don't take a long time. It is a great
differentiator. Again, after about 5 minutes of watching, we know your level
of experience.

Either way, good luck, it doesn't hurt to know more about a subject.

Jay

We're on a new install of Remedy ARS. Here's the vital stats:

Suse Linux = AR Server OS

Remote Oracle DB (Oracle 10g RAC)

AR Server 7.5 patch 005

Non-root install

I've only gotten through the AR Install. It installed with no errors.
When the server tries to start I keep getting this error:

ARMonitor child process (pid:3719) started.
./arplugin
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/remedy/ar/bin:/remedy/ar/pluginsvr:/remedy/ar/arealdap:

(ARNOTE 0)
ARMonitor child process (pid:3719) died with 136. And the signal is
8.

(paths above changed since they are considered proprietary but you get
the idea)

The LD_LIBRARY_PATH appears to have everything in it that it needs.
Support has reviewed our ar.conf file and had us try a few things but so
far we have not solved the problem.

Also, when I attempt to invoke the plug-in server directly using the
line in armonitor.conf I get this error:

/remedy/ar/bin/arplugin: error while loading shared libraries:
libarcrypto.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or
directory

The libarcrypto.so file exists and is in the /ar/bin directory. We have
a supported version of Java installed.

Asking DDE questions at this point is pointless. DDE does not work in
browsers so any DDE-related development simply will not work in Remedy
8x and above.

Enough people are using the mid-tiers and browsers now that I can't see
any wide-scale usage of DDE like there used to be back in the Windows
client + screen pop days.

Using Abydos Designer Standalone, you can be designing processes for your
Remedy application within minutes by simply installing Abydos Designer on
your laptop or PC.

Abydos Designer Standalone provides unparalleled flexibility for business
analysts, Remedy consultants, system designers and architects by providing a
powerful process modelling environment without the need for any Remedy or
database software.

Why Abydos Designer ?

Abydos
http://www.abydos-workflow.com/Products/AbydosDesigner/tabid/60/Default.asp
x Designer is the only process modelling tool designed specifically for
BMC Remedy applications. Use the Standalone version for requirements
gathering, process workshops or to customise best-practice process models
for IT Service Management without the need for a Remedy server but with full
access to Remedy form structures and field references.

Implementation**

Once design is complete, simply export and (provided you have purchased the
full version of Abydos Designer), import onto one of your Remedy servers to
allow the processes to be implemented in real time without the need for any
complex development, templates or customisation.

Re: Problems Installing 7.5 on Solaris/Informix

2010-06-16 Thread Steve McDonald
Turns out I'm using an incompatible Informix client. I looked at the
compatibility matrix when I started the upgrade process and saw that for
Informix on solaris the minimum db version is 10. I have that db on my db
server and used the v10 client on my app server to upgrade to ARS v7.1 last
year so I figured I was good.

Not so fast grasshopper!

I'm being told by BMC that only v9.2 of the Informix client is compatible
and that is why it's failing. My DBA says 9.2 is no longer supported by
Informix and is about 5 years old. The reason I'm upgrading to 7.5 is
because for support reasons we are upgrading to Informix 11 and ARS v7.1
isn't compatible with v11. This is such crap

I can use dbaccess from my app server to access the db on the remote db

I threw everything over to BMC Support but the response time is killing

Mark,

Just so I understand what I'm reading..Abydos Designer Standalone is free,
and allows you to model a process.but doesn't allow you to import that
process into Remedy?guess I need to understand what the model it creates
is and what it would create if I was able to import it.

Like I said, I used v10 of the Informix client to install ARS v7.1 and had

install log. You may want to check all those logs that get generated on
that
directory..

If it is an upgrade you are attempting, does the system currently stop or

Steve,

Put the AR Server in a startup debug mode and then try to restart.. This is
done by adding the flag -s (or -d I don't recall clearly) in the
armonitor.conf file. Check for details on setting that flag on the AR
Configuration Guide..

The server when in a debug mode during startup, writes additional logs to a
file that gets created in the server directory. That file may have more
information on why the startup fails..

You don't need to create a filter for that workflow.
You can set the assignment configuration to set Incident Owner as Help Desk for
all tickets.

I have not given the help desk incident master permission either; what I did

The reason I don't grant the help desk incident master permission is because

Hi Everyone,

We have rolled out Remedy ITSM 7.5 to the users in April. We are now
doing follow-up feedback to see what the users like and dislike. One
constant is they want to be able to update and transfer Incident
tickets no matter what queue it is in. For example if the Service Desk

update the ticket directly. Very similar to the way they worked in

Incident Master permissions?

When using the email engine on *nix I've always had to use POP3. Typically
this involves using SSL so the transaction is encrypted (POP3 is very insecure

MS Exchange accounts can be set to allow for POP3 access. In larger companies
it is often required to set one server aside as the Special pop3 server and
firewall it off/lock it down so only the server(s) that need to access it can
get to it.

Re: Help Designing and Implementing a Service Catalog for ITSM 7.6

2010-06-16 Thread Guillaume Rheault
The only BMC book or manual that addresses this is the Step-by-Step Guide to
Building a CMDB, written by Malcolm Fry.
There is a 2008 updated version of this book for ITIL v3.
Although it is a decent guide, it may still not provide what you are looking
for, since this book is more geared towards a CMDB project implementation (as
the name implies).

You can find this book in Amazon; while in Amazon, you may as well search for
other CMDB or service catalog booksHowever, as you know, all these books
will be mroe conceptual than anything, and none will provide you with the
ramifications and consequences of your decision on the ITSM 7.6 apps. Still, if
you have some money and time to burn, I recommend the Step-by-Step Guide to
Building a CMDB guide.

Subject: Help Designing and Implementing a Service Catalog for ITSM 7.6

Our CIO and a shared services working group (IT managers at the campus level)
have jumped into a project to create a university system-level service catalog
based on ITIL (which they know very little about), working from a template they
“found” on the web. This is one of those typical top-down, consultant-driven
exercises where the people who might actually have to implement the service
catalog have neither been involved nor consulted.

I believe that I will need to give them some sort of framework that describes
how this information has to be structured to fit in the Atrium Core 7.6 Service
Catalog, or they will wander off (they already have) and create something that
is impossible to translate into the Atrium Core/ITSM 7.6 data structures. Part
of my problem is that after a quick search of the docs and white papers, it
does not appear that BMC has published a comprehensive guide to doing this yet.
We certainly have no experience with it since most of these features are not
present in the ITSM 7.0 applications that we have in production. We have not
implemented the CMDB in our ITSM 7.0 system; we did not have Asset Management,
and made no attempt to build anything in the CI Viewer for obvious reasons. We
will have Asset Management in our 7.6 environment, but like the CMDB it will
start out empty. Maybe that is a good thing – we will start out with a clean
slate. We have ADDM, but the results we got from it during testing last year
were not encouraging, plus the current released versions where changing faster
than most folks change underwear – too fast to keep up with.

Can anyone point me to a comprehensive guide to setting up the Service Catalog
in Atrium 7.6 such that it will properly support Service definitions in
Incident and Change (and I presume Asset), and down the road – assuming that we
try to deploy it next to our Kinetic Request system – Service Request Mgmt 7.6.
What I have found in the docs so far is mostly the usual “if you had any idea
what you wanted to define, here is where you would do it” sort of thing that
BMC Remedy is famous for. It is never in any sort of context where you can
tell how it will affect the ITSM apps, or SLM, or SRM. The
documents/postings/white paper that I found on BMCDN erred in the other
direction, with very high level descriptions but no correlation to HOW anything
has to be done to actually implement a Service Catalog in the ITSM 7.6 suite of
applications. Maybe there simply isn’t anything out there yet; I am still
bogged down in incredibly buggy installers trying to find the best route for
upgrading/migrating the production 7.1/7.0 system to 7.5/7.6, so I admit that I
have not looked too hard. Any pointers from some of the 7.6 pioneers out there
would be appreciated.

Using a Table field as a matrix ( long post )

2010-06-16 Thread Reiser, John J
Hello Listers,
ARS 7.1 Patch 4
MS SQL 2005
Windows Enterprise 2003?

I have a customer who is requesting a matrix type table to be added to a form.
Here's the scenario.
Submit a Training Request record.
This is a generic Helpdesk form with multiple page tabs.
One tab is called Classroom

The customer will Select a Training Category and Type.
They will pick a date and duration ( hours ) for the training session.
This constitutes a Session_GUID.

As the Students arrive they will be linked to the Session as Attendees.
This is ok if there is only one session for the request.

The table will list the Training Date in column 1 the attendee in column 2.
The Session_GUID is a hidden column.

The issue occurs if training is done in multiple sessions.
Then they want the table to be Start Date in column 1, attendee in column 2,
Attendance Session1 in column 3, Attendance Session2 in column 4 etc.
I don't expect there to be more than 4 or 5 Sessions but that is not a
guarantee.
So I could have something like this:
Start Date | Attendee | Session 1 | Session 2 | --- | Session n
06/16/2010 | Reiser, John | Y |N
06/16/2010 | Smith, Roger | Y |Y
So if there was a Session 3, 4 or 5 or 10. They want to see it in the same line.

The only thing that I can think of is to make the Sessions (1 - n) a character
field and concatenate the students attendance with the pipe character |
delimiting them.

They also want the total hours spent in training for each student. By Session,
By training request and also all training the student has taken.

I think I have that covered because the student attendance is a factor of the
session time and whether or not they attended that session ( many GUIDs in this
one)

Would this be handled better as a Tree View. I've never worked with a table in
tree view. I know it won't give me the neat matrix layout but conceptually it
should give me:
Start Date
-Attendee
-Session 1
-Session 2
-Session n
Is that correct? If this works I may be able to sell them on the tree view.

Thanks and sorry for the long-winded post.

Re: Problems Installing 7.5 on Solaris/Informix

2010-06-16 Thread Easter, David
Yes. The Informix 11 DB is backwards compatible for use with the 9.2 client.
That's why it is listed in the compatibility matrix.

For DB clients, AR System is compiled against a specific version of the client.
Some database vendors provide backwards and forwards compatibility
sufficiently such that other versions of the clients may work. However, some
vendors do not - and BMC Support ran into several cases where a different
version of the client than what was compiled against caused problems. The
matrix now shows the client version that BMC compiled against and declares that
as supported. In some cases (e.g. Sybase), the matrix explicitly calls out
maintenance releases as well as they were found to work properly.

By the way, in the Summer 2010 release of AR System, BMC is tentatively
expecting that the client version will be updated to 11.5 and the minimum DB
server version will be raised to 11.5 as well.

I recieved an email that I've been escalated so I'll wait for contact and see

Turns out I'm using an incompatible Informix client. I looked at the
compatibility matrix when I started the upgrade process and saw that for
Informix on solaris the minimum db version is 10. I have that db on my db
server and used the v10 client on my app server to upgrade to ARS v7.1 last
year so I figured I was good.

Not so fast grasshopper!

I'm being told by BMC that only v9.2 of the Informix client is compatible and
that is why it's failing. My DBA says 9.2 is no longer supported by Informix
and is about 5 years old. The reason I'm upgrading to 7.5 is because for
support reasons we are upgrading to Informix 11 and ARS v7.1 isn't compatible
with v11. This is such crap

I would get the exact SQL used to connect from the install's sql.log (usually

Are you running dbaccess as the same user that Remedy is starting up as?

Re: mapi on linux

2010-06-16 Thread Will Du Chene
There are? Really? Where? MAPI is entirely a closed-source Microsoft
standard, and is tied extensively to the Windows platform and API's. Those
libraries do not exist on a linux platform which is why the code was never
ported.

This is why so many people who use a linux desktop (including myself) have
to use a third party connector (used to be the Ximian Connector now via
Novell and then into open source) and the Evolution client to get it to
work. If there is something new out there in the software landscape that
does the same thing, I would be very interested in reading about it.

Remedy-wise, it's always just been easier to use a different protocol for
mail, such as POP3 or IMAP, since they are at least a standard and clients
and utilities are plentiful.

When using the email engine on *nix I've always had to use POP3.
Typically this involves using SSL so the transaction is encrypted (POP3 is
very insecure without it).

MS Exchange accounts can be set to allow for POP3 access. In larger
companies it is often required to set one server aside as the Special
pop3 server and firewall it off/lock it down so only the server(s) that
need to access it can get to it.

I don't believe you can use the email engine with MAPI on Linux. The
MAPI implementation requires a JNI library to call MAPI functions that is

Subject: Using a Table field as a matrix ( long post )

Hello Listers,
ARS 7.1 Patch 4
MS SQL 2005
Windows Enterprise 2003?

I have a customer who is requesting a matrix type table to be added to a
form.

They want to see it in the same
line.

The only thing that I can think of is to make the Sessions (1 - n) a
character field and concatenate the students attendance with the pipe
character | delimiting them.

They also want the total hours spent in training for each student. By
Session, By training request and also all training the student has taken.

I think I have that covered because the student attendance is a factor of
the session time and whether or not they attended that session ( many GUIDs
in this one)

Would this be handled better as a Tree View. I've never worked with a table
in tree view. I know it won't give me the neat matrix layout but
conceptually it should give me:
Start Date
-Attendee
-Session 1
-Session 2
-Session n
Is that correct? If this works I may be able to sell them on the tree view.

Thanks and sorry for the long-winded post.

The places you can start looking at is:
1. Network -- try tracert to the arserver from your client machine and
see the output.
-- Also do the tracert to the db from arserver if it
is a remote db.
2. DB -- Check with dba if anything other than remedy is keeping it
busy?
Any huge queries or bad queries by users?
Turn on the sql log from remedy and see which sql is
taking too long?
3 ARSystem -- Turn on the escalation logs and see any escalations are
running and keeping admin thread busy.
Try to stop all other processes and start one
at a time to see what is keeping admin thread busy.
See if devcache mode is on?
If its unix system then do prstat to see which thread is high cpu and
then validate against thread logs.
Turn on the API logs and see if any particular api call is taking too
long.

Oh yeah, They're going to want to report on this too ;^ to see who was
trained , how often, on what, how many man-hours did the instructor charge, has
John Doe taken this training before? You get the idea.

The main driver is that it will be an Attendance sheet for them and they want
to enter the student and click, click click - he was here for three sessions.
I'm going to have to offer the two table approach.
Table one lists the Session Category, Type and Date. Table two lists the
Students. Selecting a row in either table returns the corresponding information.

I think that might work.
Still open to a proven solution though.
Thanks,

Thanks for the quick response.

The execute bit is on and the non-root user is the owner of all of these
objects.

You are right about the paths - they are correct on the server but not in
the email. I should have said it's in the installdir/ar/bin

Make sure the x (execute) bit is on. if not, turn it on.

ls -l libarcrypto.so
chmod +x libarcrypto.so

In your email you say the .so is in /ar/bin, not /remedy/ar/bin

Double check that this is just a type else fix your path or copy the file.

We're on a new install of Remedy ARS. Here's the vital stats:

Suse Linux = AR Server OS

Remote Oracle DB (Oracle 10g RAC)

AR Server 7.5 patch 005

Non-root install

I've only gotten through the AR Install. It installed with no errors. When
the server tries to start I keep getting this error:

ARMonitor child process (pid:3719) started.

ARMonitor child process (pid:3719) died with 136. And the signal is 8.

(paths above changed since they are considered proprietary but you get the
idea)

The LD_LIBRARY_PATH appears to have everything in it that it needs. Support
has reviewed our ar.conf file and had us try a few things but so far we have
not solved the problem.

Also, when I attempt to invoke the plug-in server directly using the line in
armonitor.conf I get this error:

/remedy/ar/bin/arplugin: error while loading shared

Are you running midtier or some other java application that uses the remedy
api on the same machine?

Hi Listers,

Yesterday I installed BMC Analytics 2.5.00 with no issues during the
installation document.

I had followed the installation Doc for that.

But when I am trying to login to Analytics I am not getting the usual
screen.

http://localhost:8080/InfoViewApp/listing/main.do?appKind=InfoViewservice=%2FInfoViewApp%2Fcommon%2FappService.doloc

I have attached the screenshot of the same.

Also a new issue came up when I was trying to login to the mid-tier. The
login is happening normally but then the Exception error from Tomcat is
coming up

I have attached the screenshot of the same too.

Please suggest.
