Re: ARSystem Service Unable to Start after ARSystem DB Mirrored

2010-07-06 Thread Ram Rudra
I have run the telnet and port query from ARServer to DB servers. I am able to
access them without any errors.

Also,

Can you tell me if any otherways to perform testing from ARServer to DB servers.

If you try to connect to the DB from the SQL client on the DB server, it is
obviously going to connect if the DB is up and running. What's the point in
testing that?

Try connecting from the SQL client on the ARS Server.. Your connectivity
between the ARS Server to the DB server is in question so that is what you need
to test if it works or not..

All the 3 Mirrored DB servers in the SQL Mirroring with an instance of
'ARSystem' and with the login ID of 'ARAdmin' are able to login and access the
database successfully from all teh DB Servers. if it is something related to
ARS app, how can we shot it.

Something that I always try when I have a DB connect issue.. Try logging into
the DB using the DB client from the ARS Server machine.. If that fails too then
you have a bigger issue. If that does not fail, then the issue could be assumed
to be ARS related.

Give that a shot and see if you can connect to the DB from the ARS Server using
the DB client.

If I say in an appropriate way,

"One ARServer has to point with two DB mirrored servers with a Unique DB name".

For Unique DB Name I have configured already the DB Aliasing name in the
Database configuration .

Sorry Ram just re-read your original question and incorrectly thought you had
restored a database.

Are you attempting to point your arserver to two completely seperate databases
without a load balancer?

DB Links vs Webservices

2010-07-06 Thread NNMN
Hi ARSers,

Something which i have been thinking about. I want to know your views on
this.
Let us imagine we have systems, SYS-A(Remedy with its backend) and
SYS-B(another platform app(like java,.NET etc) with its backend). Now if i
want the data from both these systems to flow from each other for certain
interactions, lets say i have the possibility of below methods.
Method-1) I use web-services exposed from both sides to mutually call and
get the input/output approprately and thus i acheive transactions.
Method-2) I expose some relavant schema details as DB links and then i
access them from where ever required (as view forms Remedy).

Now i want to know about the pros and cons of above methods with respect to
. I always feel that Method 2 is kind of crude way of implementing, but in a
way i get this feeling from many i talked, that it is an easier and
effortless way to go about it. Still thinking on a long term, reliability,
data-transfer speed etc
factors.

Cheers,
Naveen

Re: Bulk Updates

2010-07-06 Thread Chowdhury, Tauf
Amanullah,

If the site will be different for all of these people, the best thing to
do (from my experience) is to run an AR report including the People ID
(field 1) and report out to a .csv file. This should include the 10,000
users. You can then add a column for 'Site+' on the .csv and update it
with information from your Site form (The values need to exist on the
Site form before you proceed). Then you would just use the import tool
to import back that .csv file. Just make sure in Preferences you select
"Update old record..." Make sure you map Field ID 1 (People ID).

Of course, try it in a dev environment first. Good luck!

To the U.S. listers, hope you all had a great Independence Day!

ARS 7.5 patch 5 Upgrade

2010-07-06 Thread Fatima
Hi everyone,
We are upgrading from ARS 6.3 on:
- Solaris 10
- Oracle 9i
- Apache Tomcat 5.5.26
to ARS 7.5 on:
- Solaris 10
- Oracle 10g
- Apache Tomcat 5.5.29

The Oracle upgrade from 9i to 10g went fine. We upgraded ARS 6.3 to ARS 7.1
fine.
With the ARS 7.5 patch 5 installer, we get an error indicating that our
underlying database is not Unicode but ARS is configured as Unicode.
Although our database is Unicode, our NLS Parameters are as follows:

SQL> SELECT * FROM V$NLS_PARAMETERS;

PARAMETERVALUE

NLS_LANGUAGE AMERICAN
NLS_TERRITORYAMERICA
NLS_CURRENCY $
NLS_ISO_CURRENCY AMERICA
NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS .,
NLS_CALENDAR GREGORIAN
NLS_DATE_FORMAT DD-MON-RR
NLS_DATE_LANGUAGEAMERICAN
NLS_CHARACTERSET
AR8ISO8859P6
NLS_SORT BINARY
NLS_TIME_FORMAT HH.MI.SSXFF
AM
NLS_TIMESTAMP_FORMAT DD-MON-RR
HH.MI.SSXFF AM
NLS_TIME_TZ_FORMAT HH.MI.SSXFF
AM TZR
NLS_TIMESTAMP_TZ_FORMAT DD-MON-RR
HH.MI.SSXFF AM TZR
NLS_DUAL_CURRENCY$
NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET AL16UTF16
NLS_COMP BINARY
NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS BYTE
NLS_NCHAR_CONV_EXCP FALSE

Does anyone know exactly which parameters does the installer check to know
if the database is Unicode or not, so we can ensure they are set correctly.
The OS LANG and NLS_LANG parameters are not set, do they need to be set to
any specific value?

The weird thing is that the ARS 7.5 patch 3 installer runs smoothly without
this error, but we prefer to go to patch 5.

Thanks,
Fatima Amin

Re: ITSM Upgrade Issues

2010-07-06 Thread Kevin Begosh
I actually have another 7.0 system which is an virtual image that was a
blank install and that field ID is the same as mine here as well. This is
just bascially an instance of one field that is not importing right. There
are many others like this. Another example is on the HPD:HelpDesk form, the
customers incidents table. All of the fields on that table in all of my
systems start with 301 but the install is trying to import them as 303.

LANG and NLS_LANG should definitely be set. NLS_LANG tells the Oracle
client how to encode/decode the data sent to and from the db. The product
documentation covers the proper settings.

Re: ARS 7.5 patch 5 Upgrade

2010-07-06 Thread Walters, Mark
Your database is not Unicode, it's using an Arabic character set - AR8ISO8859P6
- this would be AL32UTF8 if it was Unicode. If you really need a Unicode
system you'll probably have to perform a clean install of ARS against a Unicode
database and migrate your data.

The Oracle upgrade from 9i to 10g went fine. We upgraded ARS 6.3 to ARS 7.1

The OS LANG and NLS_LANG parameters are not set, do they need to be set to any

Re: DB Links vs Webservices

2010-07-06 Thread Axton
There are many ways to integrate things. All have their price. With web
services, the data structures you can send in a single transaction are very
limited; you have several layers of infrastructure that must be available;
failed transactions are lost; etc. With db link there are potential delays
an implications with workflow if you are updating data in remedy through the
db.

No one approach is the best approach in every case. You have to look at
each case and outline what you intend to accomplish with the integration.

Is there a need for real time updates?
Is there a need to block a transaction if the integration fails?
is there a need for a message queue so that failed operations can be
retried?
Is there a need to fetch data in real time?
What is the expected volume of data?
How is the data used in your Remedy applications?
How will you handle updates to data?

And the list of questions to drive the appropriate solution go on and on.
Take a good look at what you are trying to do then make a determination on
what type of integration is most appropriate.

Rabi,
I know this may not be ideal, but you may want to upgrade your arimportcmd
fileas you know, you can easily use a newer client on an older
server7.1 was the last version with the arimportcmd, or you could use
the new version in 7.5they might fix the problem you are having as it
may be a client issue

Subject: arimportcmd woes on Solaris. no error, no import

Hi all, I have a ".arm" mapping file that works fine when used with the GUI
version of the tool (Remedy Import) to import a csv file into a form.
I take the mapping file to a Solaris box, change two path parameters in the
file (import file, log file), and it doesn't work.

On the Solaris box, I see that the mapping file was read by arimportcmd
because it spits out log text to a file as specified in the
"Import-Log-Filename:" parameter in the mapping file.

This is the log file content (4 lines):

AR System Import Tool Wed Jun 30 00:55:45 2010

How useful!

arimportcmd completes running right away, no message on the screen, no
import.

I verified that the path to the import file is right, permissions are right.
I made sure that the mapping file transfer from Windows to Unix was right
(tried both text vs bin format)

I can't even begin to troubleshoot, because it won't tell me what's wrong.

Well, I did try troubleshooting by specifying the import and log files as
well as the form name on the command line...
...by messing up various pieces of info on the command line and on the
mapping file (username, password, server name, mapping name, directory) to
cause it to give me error, some error, any error!
Nothing. It won't ever complain of anything! If it can, it spits out the log
as above. Else it just completes running with no output, no import, nothing.

My version is...ahem...6.3. Server patch 25, arimportcmd...I believe is
patch 19.

Support site has no useful bugs on this topic. A few reports of similar
issues closed with "user error". I triple checked myself, but I swear there
is no error on me today.

My command line:
/opt/remedy/bin/arimportcmd -u "Test User" -p "password" -x
"remedy.company.edu" -d "/opt/remedy/local/misc" -m
"ARMappingForVOIPPhExtDumpImport"

As for the environment variables on the remedy server, the following should
be set:

LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.AL32UTF8

These need to be set for the armonitor process.

Whoops - my bad - I looked at my 7.5 system and not my 7.0 :(

On my 7.0.2 system on FIN:Costs the Related Costs field is 270002018 as you

Interesting that in the installation guide for 7.5 the specific versions for

Re: ITSM Upgrade Issues

2010-07-06 Thread Kevin Begosh
yeah, I guess the question or problem I have that I am waiting support to
come back with is if you are able to upgrade from 7.03 Patch 9 to 7.5 or 7.6
then how is the new field ID's suppose to change. It is trying to add Field
ID 303. with the same name as one that exists and it's failing because
you cannot have the two fields with the same DB name. So I am consufsed to
what should happen with the install and/or why so many other people are not
having issues. The only thing I can think of is that it is suppose to
replace that field and if it's not doing it then why not?

okay so I have been having ITSM upgrade issues and I have finally
narrowed it down. Basically what is happening is I am running the ITSM
install and it is trying to import .def .arx files etc and it is
 failing
some definition files because it is trying to import a form with a field
that already exists and failing saying that it already exists but the DB
 ID's are different.

 Example:

One of the installs is importing the form FIN:LoadCosts and is failing
because in the current system the field Related Cost is there, which it
should be but it is Field ID 270002018. The field ID trying to be imported
 is 303778300.

I have looked at other system the same version as mine and the current
field ID is the same as mine 270002018. So why is this form failing to
import, shouldn't it be over writing that field?

Has anyone else seen this or run into this issue?

 Current system:
 ARS 7.5 Patch 4
 CMDB 7.6 Patch 1
ITSM 7.03 Patch 9, plus the compatibility Patch
 Windows 2003 Server
 SQL 2005 DB
 VMWare Virtual Server

I am trying to upgrade to ITSM 7.6 Patch 1

I have tried ITSM 7.6 Patch 1, ITSM 7.6, and now I am trying ITSM 7.5
and the same issue is happening on all three upgrades.

Re: SVN/CVS integration with Remedy Admin Tool (v7.1)

2010-07-06 Thread LJ LongWing
In short, you can't. In 7.5 you can enable the built in source control
efforts and build filter workflow that will integrate with anything you want
via run-process and such, but it's quite a bit more difficult with <7.5.

I have already gone through the integration guide but didn't find info on
how to integrate Remedy Admin Tool with these.

Any help?

Thanks!

Still thinking on a long term, reliability,
data-transfer speed etc
factors.

Cheers,
Naveen

Table Auto Refresh through the AR User Preference Form

2010-07-06 Thread Kevin Begosh
okay so I am reading through the BMC Remedy Action Request System 7.5.00
Configuration Guide and I get to page 90 which talks about Table Field
Refresh Interval - The interval at which tables automatically refreshes. On
the table in the guide there is not a + next to the User tool or the Mid
Tier, so does that mean you cannot use this at all?

Does anyone know if this is valid or has anyone used it. I tried it out and
it did not work.

Also you undermined the ARS permission model by doing DB integrations. I am
sure with some extra coding you could probably kind of replicated it if that
is important (say in the case of Multitenancy) but I would rather allow the

Re: AR User Tool Deprecated?

2010-07-06 Thread Easter, David
Here's a blurb from their documentation if it helps. Might be a little
outdated (got it in 2009) but gives the general idea:

REM Event Drive Professional Edition v2.1 for BMC Action Request System is a
technology that allows real time events to be received in any Remedy client. In
this way
instant communications between server and client are possible, without having to
periodically check with the server and therefore obtaining rapid response for
low network
and server overhead. The uses for this technology include for example:

 * Real time instant data updates in tables, status fields, buttons etc.
 * Initiation of automated actions from one event without the user needing to
interact.
 * Integration of multiple applications in a single Remedy window, being able
to interact with these systems and see their responses asynchronously without
having to juggle multiple Windows etc.

REM Event Drive has been built on BMC Remedy Action Request System(r) and Java,
Making its installation and operation possible on any machine that runs BMC
Remedy
ARS 7.0 or higher, regardless of the operating system.

Our thin client integrations do in fact use javascript for integration.

In a nutshell the client programming issues with web are as follows:
1. To access the javascript you need to first latch onto the web browser
instance which requires custom code for each web browser.
2. WUT has a MDI interface which yes is a proprietary Windows technology but
you can have powerful control of form instances etc. This is harder with web
clients.
2. WUT has more control from Remedy client -> third party client due to the
fact that there are not the same security restrictions as on a web browser. Eg
you can't run process with a web client.

We support whichever versions of Remedy clients are likely to be using.

The ideal interface from our point of view would be a interface which we can
access via the server but which would provide the ability to 'push' to the
relevant client. I am thinking the Remedy soap interface may provide this. We
need to test. Service Desk Express have something like this with their push
service. We also need a way for a user to send a message from web client and
be able to detect this message - hopefully via soap or some other interface.

Does anyone know if the soap interface could provide this? I have doc, just
need to get reading.

Re: ARSystem Service Unable to Start after ARSystem DB Mirrored

2010-07-06 Thread Joe D'Souza
Telnet is not a DB client.. Use the SQL Server client such as the query
analyzer. I know that 2005 onwards installs only the dll's, but if you install
the SQL Management Studio you will get the thick SQL Server client installed
along with it (and not just the libraries). Use this client to connect to the
DB and see if that works.

I understand that you can telnet to the DB server, that only establishes the
network connectivity. You still cannot say with 100% certainty that the DB
client can successfully connect to the DB unless you check its connectivity.

Just out of curiosity, what port are you using when checking with Telnet?

If you try to connect to the DB from the SQL client on the DB server, it is
obviously going to connect if the DB is up and running. What's the point in
testing that?

Try connecting from the SQL client on the ARS Server.. Your connectivity
between the ARS Server to the DB server is in question so that is what you need
to test if it works or not..

Re: Table Auto Refresh through the AR User Preference Form

2010-07-06 Thread Mueller, Doug
Kevin,

If you wanted this to happen:

1) Create an active link that fires on interval and set the interval to 60
seconds and attach it to the form that
contains the table you want to refresh. Define no Run If condition and define
a single action which is a
Change Field action to perform a table refresh.

There is no step 2.

This will refresh the table once a minute.

NOTE: This is not a recommended practice in general as you really need to mean
it if you do this. And, you
really need to make sure the query is efficient. And, you need to think of
whether there is any impact on the
user for doing this -- for example, do other fields refresh as the table
refreshes?

So, something that is easy to do, but is it a good thing to do is another
question.

I hope this is useful,

Doug Mueller

okay so I am reading through the BMC Remedy Action Request System 7.5.00

Interval - The interval at which tables automatically refreshes. On the table
in the guide there is not a + next to the User tool or the Mid Tier, so does

Does anyone know if this is valid or has anyone used it. I tried it out and it

One thing I haven't seen addressed very thoroughly in this thread, is
macros. Our system is 8 years old and users have many macros to make their

Re: AR User Tool Deprecated?

2010-07-06 Thread Easter, David
In BMC's surveys of customers, it was found that the majority of macros are
used to generate reports. Thus, a linking of saved searches to reports was
created in AR System 7.5.00.

Quick reports in a browser
With the My Reports toolbar button, you can save reports from searches you
perform on a form. Each report is saved per server, per form, and per user.

For more information, see the "Using the My Reports toolbar button" section in
the BMC Remedy Mid Tier Guide.

If it is found that this isn't sufficient for the majority of cases, a richer
macro-like capability could be considered for a future release. I have also
heard of customers just utilizing the mouse-and-keyboard recorders now commonly
available that work just fine within a browser. I personally use
http://mouse-recorder.macro-expert.com/index.html, but there are lots of others
out there.

Just out of curiosity, what port are you using when checking with Telnet?

Something that I always try when I have a DB connect issue.. Try logging into
the DB using the DB client from the ARS Server machine.. If that fails too then
you have a bigger issue. If that does not fail, then the issue could be assumed
to be ARS related.

Give that a shot and see if you can connect to the DB from the ARS Server using
the DB client.

Escape out of Hit list in RKM integration

2010-07-06 Thread Gramlich, Jeff
Hi
Testing
RKM 7.2 Patch 3
In ARS 6.3
Have a test subject w/special visual needs. Who uses JAWS.
In test subject's view, I've added in the Hit List (View Field) and the Refresh
Search button.
Testing has ran into a bump. Can't escape out of the Hit list using key
commands. Have found none in JAWS documentation nor Windows.
Anyone run into this problem before?
Barring locating that solution my next option is to place some sort of button
on the RKM site in the Results table to 'escape' out of it. My assumption is
this will pass onto the Remedy session through the integration piece. (maybe
with a little workflow)

Thanks
Jeff

That will work. We do use saved searches but not preference server, so I
guess we have some prework to do before the upgrade to mid-tier. Get those
macros into save searches in the form and use preference server. After
looking at the documentation I could find no quantity limitation and since
it's a form I believe we will be ok.

In that case the ARS Server should be able to connect to the database server.

Do you see anything in the SQL Server logs at the time you start up the ARS
Server? Maybe a bad DB password or connection parameters specified in the
ar.conf file?

Hi
Testing
RKM 7.2 Patch 3
In  ARS 6.3
Have a test subject w/special visual needs. Who uses JAWS.

In test subject’s view, I’ve added in the Hit List (View Field) and the Refresh
Search button.

Testing has ran into a bump. Can’t escape out of the Hit list using key
commands. Have found none in JAWS documentation nor Windows.

Anyone run into this problem before?

Barring locating that solution my next option is to place some sort of button
on the RKM site in the Results table to ‘escape’ out of it. My assumption is
this will pass onto the Remedy session through the integration piece. (maybe
with a little workflow)

Thanks

Jeff,

Since a view field is like another sub window although it is within the User
tool, try Alt-Tab. I don't have the tool right here right now to try that so
thought I'd post my thoughts anyways.. I do not think it will work, but worth a

The Hit List the Knowledgebase Tab in Remedy User is the results that is
returned when the query is done from the ‘Item’ field in Remedy user.
A normal user would just click out of it.
A visually impaired user would have to get out of it somehow. I have yet to
find the ‘magic’ key command to do this
