Unicode AR server? If so, then the columns in the table will need to be nchar

**
I am having some problems creating simple view form on MS SQL 2005. When I load
the table only data type decimal and integer are available. Columns of Char,
Text are not accessible. I have tried to connect to a few other tables and only
data types decimal and integer are visible.
I am connecting as database owner. This is not remote.
The table holds plenty of columns. Where only data type int and decimal is
visible in Developer Studio.
Any tips?

As far as the revenue figure is concerned, we are a government installation.
We will have about 370 end users, 4-6 help desk personnel and one admin.

To answer one other comment out there, we have been in discussion with the BMC
sales team from day one and they are the ones that recommended SDE from a
budget standpoint.

If you don't mind, what size is the company? (users, annual revenue)...
I have often wondered what size company it takes to make ARS feasible without
having to skimp too much and cut too many corners.

It would be interesting to see some sort of Gartner like report on typical how
much money companies are spending per user supported on ITSM related apps.

Yes, we have to migrate the data. We have had ARS version 7.5 up for

migrate. We have to find a new, read less expensive, solution. Given that we
still have maintenance, we can get issues resolved in ARS while we work to

It sounds like it will be no easy task, but I figure at this point there is no

I have worked with both of them over the years and have a fair amount
of experience with both products. There are a number of things that you should
know and prepare for.

I guess the first question is going to be: how deep down the rabbit
hole do you want to go?

Do you have any external integrations which make use of your ARSystem
database? Do you have any import/update jobs (or the like) that make use of
DTS/SSIS (or similar technology) which update records directly? Do you have any
tables that have been exported for use in your database (with vendor forms)
from external sources? Do you have a significant number of reports that query
the database for data, or are you using a reporting server? Have you developed
any applications which use the API to process data - outside of the normal
workflow (active link, filter, guide) paradigm?

And the big question: Are you planning on migrating your existing data?

Depending on how you have your installation set up and what your
requirements are, a migration may well be a nightmare.

If you switch platforms, the glaringly obvious stuff would be that all
of your reports have to change, you'll have to recreate all of your user
accounts (or your integration to the LDAP/AD), any packages for moving and
updating data that your DBA might have set up, any custom views, database
objects (SPs, UDFs), or API

2011-09-20 Thread Axton
I believe you still need session persistence with the mid-tier in 7.6. You
do not (and have not really) required session persistence with the ARServer.
A whitepaper available for 7.6 details this.

The timeout on the load balancer needs to match or exceed the session
timeout of your mid-tier application.
If you are using a single sign on solution the mid-tier session timeout
needs to be less than or equal to the SSO session timeout.

So this would be a valid combination:
Mid-tier Session Timeout: 60 minutes
SSO Session Timeout: 120 minutes
Load Balancer Session Persistence Expiration: 60 minutes

In order for a J2EE application to not require session persistence a number
of things have to be in place:
- all objects in the container must be serializable
- the container nodes in the farm must be configured as a cluster (session
information must be serialized)

There are some things that make me believe this is not possible with the
midtier. Some information that is session specific is written to disk. I
doubt these can be properly replicated between the J2EE containers.

Blocking Users from PRD Server for Testing After Upgrade

2011-09-20 Thread Trez Moreland
Hi All:

ARS 7.1

Win2003 on VMWare Virtual Environment

We’re doing a PRD upgrade next week (ARS 7.1 to 7.6.04 SP1) and we’d like to
block users from connecting while we perform some testing of custom apps.
Problem is – we can’t leave the AR Server in Admin mode because we need users
from specific Assignee Groups to perform the tests.

I’m throwing the question at our network and security admins – but thought I’d
ask the ARSLIST group the question first. Any insight into the best way to

Re: Software load balancer with AR Server and Mistier

2011-09-20 Thread Axton
http://documents.bmc.com/supportu/documents/61/98/186198/186198.pdf

The information is a bit vague in regards to load balancer configuration in
front of the midtier/web servers, but note that in the whitepaper,
everywhere it says that session persistence is not required, it refers to it
as the load balancer between the midtier and arservers or in front of the
arservers.

The release notes make the following statement:
http://documents.bmc.com/supportu/documents/43/74/184374/184374.pdf

New load balancer configuration options
If your AR System uses a hardware load balancer between the mid tier servers
and AR System servers, BMC recommends configuring that load balancer
without using a sticky bit by using the Connection Settings page in the BMC
Remedy Mid Tier Configuration tool.

Note that it does not state to turn it off for the load balancer in front of
the mid-tier.

You might be able to get away without setting up session persistence with
the later versions of the midtier since the API does not have a native
library dependency (assuming they implemented the serializable interface for
all the non-native session specific things), but there is extra
configuration you need to do with your J2EE container. For Tomcat, see
here:

http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-6.0-doc/cluster-howto.html

To run session replication in your Tomcat 6.0 container, the following steps
should be completed:
- All your session attributes must implement java.io.Serializable
- Uncomment the Cluster element in server.xml
- If you have defined custom cluster valves, make sure you have the
ReplicationValve defined as well under the Cluster element in server.xml
- If your Tomcat instances are running on the same machine, make sure the
tcpListenPort attribute is unique for each instance, in most cases Tomcat is
smart enough to resolve this on it's own by autodetecting available ports in
the range 4000-4100
- Make sure your web.xml has the distributable/ element
- If you are using mod_jk, make sure that jvmRoute attribute is set at your
Engine Engine name=Catalina jvmRoute=node01 and that the jvmRoute
attribute value matches your worker name in workers.properties
- Make sure that all nodes have the same time and sync with NTP service!
- Make sure that your loadbalancer is configured for sticky session mode.

So even with Tomcat cluster configurations the load balancer must have
session persistence. I imagine the strategy with the above statements is to
support a session moving from one node to another node in the event a node
fails, not to simply allow any random request to go to any node.

Again, the J2EE container cluster configuration may or may not work. I
can't find anything stating experimentation either way.

If you are using AREA authentication (where you leave the password in Remedy

want to have access. When you want them to have access just remove the

If your adding custom fields to the CMDB core forms via the class manager, are
you manually adding these same fields to the AST forms via the developer

moves the fields from the CMDB classes to the AST classes for you.

When adding fields manually to a form, you can change the default value to
pretty much any value you want. Once you save though, you can't change the ID.

If you're running ARS 7.5/7.6, the active link service action calls filters
with the execute on set to Service.

Subject: Re: Software load balancer with AR Server and Mistier

The information is a bit vague in regards to load balancer configuration in
front of the midtier/web servers, but note that in the whitepaper, everywhere
it says that session persistence is not required, it refers to it as the load
balancer between the midtier and arservers or in front of the arservers.

The release notes make the following statement:
http://documents.bmc.com/supportu/documents/43/74/184374/184374.pdf

New load balancer configuration options
If your AR System uses a hardware load balancer between the mid tier servers
and AR System servers, BMC recommends configuring that load balancer without
using a sticky bit by using the Connection Settings page in the BMC Remedy Mid
Tier Configuration tool.

Note that it does not state to turn it off for the load balancer in front of
the mid-tier.

You might be able to get away without setting up session persistence with the
later versions of the midtier since the API does not have a native library
dependency (assuming they implemented the serializable interface for all the
non-native session specific things), but there is extra configuration you need
to do with your J2EE container. For Tomcat, see here:

http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-6.0-doc/cluster-howto.html

So even with Tomcat cluster configurations the load balancer must have session
persistence. I imagine the strategy with the above statements is to support a
session moving from one node to another node in the event a node fails, not to
simply allow any random request to go to any node.

Again, the J2EE container cluster configuration may or may not work. I can't
find anything stating experimentation either way.

** I believe you still need session persistence with the mid-tier in 7.6. You
do not (and have not really) required session persistence with the ARServer. A
whitepaper available for 7.6 details this.

The timeout on the load balancer needs to match or exceed the session timeout
of your mid-tier application.
If you are using a single sign on solution the mid-tier session timeout needs
to be less than or equal to the SSO session timeout.

So this would be a valid combination:
Mid-tier Session Timeout: 60 minutes
SSO Session Timeout: 120 minutes
Load Balancer Session Persistence Expiration: 60 minutes

In order for a J2EE application to not require session persistence a number of
things have to be in place:
- all objects in the container must be serializable
- the container nodes in the farm must be configured as a cluster (session
information must be serialized)

There are some things that make me believe this is not possible with the
midtier. Some information that is session specific is written to disk. I
doubt these can be properly replicated between the J2EE containers.

Mid Tier problems with AIE service

Depending on the size of your testing group it may be quicker to use
Frederick's idea but in reverse... In other words disable the LDAP
authentication altogether and give the test users a local remedy password.

If you are using AREA authentication (where you leave the password in Remedy
blank) you can simply put in a dummy password in Remedy for the users you don't
want to have access. When you want them to have access just remove the
password in Remedy and it will use the AREA authentication to authenticate
against your LDAP (Active Directory) server.

Re: Mid Tier problems with AIE service

2011-09-20 Thread Axton
Turn on the arfork, filter, and client side active link logs. They will
tell you more. Basically you have a set fields action in a piece of
workflow that runs a server side process. That process is not returning the
expected exit code, hence the error. Log it when you receive the error
through the midtier, get the logs; do the same through the user tool and
collect the logs. Compare the server side process that is executed and see
what's different between the two.

can I have a table field with a temp dataset?

2011-09-20 Thread Andrew C Goodall
I'm not sure how to put a succinct title on this...I'll try to explain

I want 2 tables on a display form with add and remove buttons where
I can:

1. Add item 1 from Table A to Table B, but then also remove from
Table A so it does not show up as an available selection again - since
user just added it.
2. Remove item 1 from Table B and add back to Table A.

At the end of the Add / Remove process then I will process that data in
Table B.

I can get 90% for what I'm looking for using real forms associated with
the tables, however in this design the issue I have is that all the
original available selections are always listed- I do not really want to
delete the record from Table A only hide it from selection view again.

So far it looks like I can only associate a table to a form and I'm not
able to add custom columns to the table outside of that form.

This is so easy to do in .Net with temp datasets :-(

Currently, I'm thinking the only way I can do this is if I append to an
External qualification for Table A - where not like items in table B.

Re: can I have a table field with a temp dataset?

2011-09-20 Thread Thad Esser
Andrew,

This is actually easier than you think, see below. The key is to reverse
your thinking about how a LIKE operator could be used. Read through the
entire setup before focusing too hard on the qualifications. Also, you may
want to add other clauses to your qualfications, such as a check on a status
field. Real life example: : ( 'Status' = Enabled) AND ( $RequestedList$
LIKE (( %; + 'Request ID') + ;% ))

FIELDS:

Button: Add
Button: Remove
-
Temp char field: tmp_SelectedList
-
Table A - list of options
   Column: col_A_ID
   Qualification: NOT(tmp_SelectedList LIKE %; + col_A_SelectedID + ;%)
-
Table B - list of selected options
   Column: col_B_ID
   Qualification: tmp_SelectedList LIKE %; + col_B_SelectedID + ;%

WORKFLOW

Active link: Add
Fire on Click of Add button or double click on Table A:
Action 1: set tmp_SelectedList = tmp_SelectedList + ; + col_A_ID + ;
(note: this adds the selected record to the list, including delimiters)
Action 2: Call TableRefreshGuide
-
Active link: Remove
Fire on Click of Remove button or double click on Table B:
Action 1: set tmp_SelectedList =
REPLACE(tmp_SelectedList,col_B_Selected_ID,) (note: this removes the
selected record from the list)
-
ActiveLink Guide: RefreshTableGuide
ActiveLink (put in guide): RefreshTable
Action 1: set tmp_SelectedList = REPLACE(tmp_SelectedList,;;,;)
(note: this gets rid of double semi-colons)
Action 2: Refresh Table A
Action 3: Refresh table B
Action x: anything else you want done on a table refresh, perhaps updating
count indicators.

Hopefully that helps,

I forgot to mention - Table A and Table B both use the same underlying form
for their data. No temporary dataset/form is needed.

Re: can I have a table field with a temp dataset?

2011-09-20 Thread Cecil, Ken
Your idea sounds like it would work. Alternatively, when adding an item to
B you could do a push fields and set a flag field on the original A item
source record. Then refresh A. Your qualification for table A would exclude
items where the flag is set.

Inquiry - Performance Metrics External Presentation Layers

2011-09-20 Thread Robert Molenda
I've asked BMC for some references, white papers, etc about the following
scenario - and have not received much of a response as of yet, so I'll ask
the people that know :)

I have a customer that has created a 'web content' (read presentation layer
/ portal) that allows them to create, query and update incidents. This
portal simply consumes the Web Services for doing this. While this is quite
functional - they do have some performance concerns - while the times they
are experiencing are 'acceptable' - they feel they can be improved, and thus
have reached out to see what we can find out.

So, does anyone else have created their own portal, and have utilized Web
Services, or native Java API, etc..?? What are your experiences, etc?? Are
there any pros/cons of web-services over java api?

Next - does anyone have any performance statistics they can share with
regards to Incident Create, Incident Query and Incident Modify web-services?

To be fare with my fellow friends here - below are some of the numbers the
customer is currently experiencing...

The system(s) are well tuned and architected, load balanced and separated
traffic across segments, it is ARS7.5 and Oracle for your reference...

Search Incident - 4.7 Sec (see results list)
View Incident - 10.9 Sec
Update Incident without attachment - 11.5 Sec
Submit Incident without attachment - 20.4 Sec
Submit Incident with 3MB attachment - 25.4 Sec

So honestly - these numbers do not appear all that bad - but they are asking
for comparisons - so I figured I'd ask :)

Thanks - and hope everyone is have a great time at RUG (wish I could have
attended this year to ask this question in person)

 Hi,

I have attached a log below, this me merely navigating into AIE console and
trying to stop an AIE instance via Mid Tier. What I can see from, my very
new pair of eyes, is an ARERR early and a couple of Failed qualification, is
there anything here that you could say Ah this might be it!?

Anyway, very greatful for any help.

 Thanks,
 Anders
