Using login id in field 112

2011-09-29 Thread Brian Pancia
We are currently trying to setup ITSM 7.6.04 to restrict access based on a
selected group of people. This group will be different for each ticket.
Basically, the user will go into an Incident and select people to add to a
restricted access list. We are trying to push this list of users to field
112. The BMC workflow documentation spells out the syntax
(";'joeuser';'janeuser';"). However, this throws out Error 417 stating
there is no group defined. Now a way around this is to add each user as
their own group. However, adding groups for each user and maintaining that
as people are added/removed would probably not be the best idea. Has anyone
had any success implementing this in 7.6.04?

Re: Running ARS in Read-Only mode?

2011-09-29 Thread Axton
You could create a new user, grant select access to all the remedy owned
objects (tables and views), create synonyms for those objects for the new
user, then connect Remedy to the db using the new user. This would ensure
that Remedy will not update any data. I've never tested this, but it should
work. There are some things that Remedy updates behind the scenes like AR
System User Preferences; not sure what the impact to the system is in these
cases.

Re: Why ITIL is not standardize till now?

2011-09-29 Thread Elry
Well...

In the past I have completed a lot of R&D on ITIL software vendors for
pure research or for the creation/response to RFP's.

Amanullah if it is research you are doing - then I would suggest EMA.
I don't know how well funded you are to do research, but you can set
up a free account with EMA and look at some of the free advice they
offer:

(1) Website

http://www.enterprisemanagement.com

(2) ITIL Process Research

http://www.enterprisemanagement.com/coverage/ITIL.php

(3) IT Vendor Research

http://www.enterprisemanagement.com/vendors/subscriptions.php

(4) IT Management Solution Center (This is a free tool for getting
some basic knowledge on vendors).

http://itsolutions.enterprisemanagement.com/

I hope this helps.

Good luck on the research.

Be sure to send me a copy when you are done.

Drop the leading and trailing semi-colon, make sure those double quotes are
not part of the value. Make sure the server is configured for multiple
assignee groups (Server Configuration-> Configuration-> Enable Multiple

Re: Using login id in field 112

2011-09-29 Thread Misi Mladoniczky
Hi,

I do not think that the 112-field can hold user names. You have to use the
60xxx-fields for that. If you use those fields, your syntax should be
correct.

Just to be clear, the value of the data should be:
;'joeuser';'janeuser';

I tried this with the 112 field when the 60xxx fields was first

I tested the following in version 7.1p7:

Set Field ID 112 to: 'user login';'user login';'user login'

Set request ID to Assigned Group permission only. Only users whose userid
appears in field id 112 can see the record.

Re: EXTERNAL: Re: "Outside of Reserved Range" warning?

2011-09-29 Thread Joe Martin D'Souza

Since I have taken up writing a document regarding ‘good practices’ around
development methods, which envelops the idea of adopting a convention on field
ID’s I have got a few wheels spinning before I bring thought onto a formal
document..

Adopting such conventions could mean projects where you do a ‘cleanup’. Meaning
if these standards were not approached from day 1 and now you are on day n
since the time the the ARS invaded your IT shop, going through a process of a
smooth cleanup..

The archgid should help in most cases.. This until you notice that some of your
AIE jobs, SLM rules, CMDB customizations were a part of those change field ID
efforts..

I would like to hear about first hand experiences from those who have been
impacted after the use of archgid in these specific areas. If there are other
areas that you were affected and would like to share your experiences, please
feel free to share your experiences either here or directly to me at my email.

I am not so worried about web services, as such a cleanup would break web
services too but it would only be a matter of redo your Mid-Tier cache and let
consumers of your web services know what has changed in case they start
experiencing some problems..

Your thread enabled a lot of great things:
a.. You won the longest thread Award during WWRUG (congrats! :)
b.. A couple of people have been working on documenting Field ID Best

c.. Last week, during WWRUG, this idea grew into a bigger Community
Development Best Practices initiative, very exciting!
Anders, Joe, Misi, Carl, Shyam (and perhaps other I missed) have already
contributed. Thanks a lot!
By collaboratively documenting things, the whole Community is making great
progress (proactively enabling tens of thousands of Remedy Admins worldwide :-)

#3 One of the gotchas is many times you don't know a field will be used on
multiple forms when you first create it. Some like First Name, Last Name,
Requester Phone, etc will most likely be used on many forms but some are not so
obvious when you start creating a form/application. I have some forms/apps
that were quick solutions that kept growing and lived longer than I thought
they ever would.

For things like First Name, Last Name, etc, how would we indicate that it
specific to one application (#1)? Do we indicate that it is a shared element
somehow (foundation if you will) not specific to one application?

#1 In the NOT section:
I agree it is not too important to track who created the field. I have
seen some of the conventions that capture the creator in the field ID however
as time goes on is it really that important who created it? In the context of
sharing applications in the community I think it is pretty meaningless. I also
agree there are other ways to track this if needed. I have mentioned on the
List before that I like to put "Created" in Change History field of workflow,
fields and forms. That captures who and also the create date, which is not
capture anywhere. However we have a Remedy form for tracking objects as you
build/change them that gives us the who, when and the Change Request ID to
provide a reference back to the business reason for the change (the plan is to
integrated it with AR System Version Control: Object Modification Log to
automate some). This form and a Crystal Reports also gives us the manifest for
changes that need to be moved to live.

Sync Asset UI with CMDB...

2011-09-29 Thread Remedy
Hello All,

Starting right off, does anyone know the what exactly the "Sync Asset UI
with CMDB" process does? What it touches?

My understanding from way back was that the following steps were performed
on a class by the Sync:

1. Check to see if on the AST form, a 'Custom 0' tab exists.

a. If the tab does not exist, create it.

2. Going to the last 'Custom X' tab found, is there room to add
another field to it

a. If no room, then create a new 'Custom X+1' tab.

3. Take the custom field found on the BMC.CORE class and add it into
the view of the current AST form (if the field already exists on the AST
form, then skip to the next custom field).

4. Put the custom field just added to the view onto the 'Custom X' tab
(or newly created one). Normally this aligns it under the previous field

5. Repeat steps 2-4 for any other custom fields added.

We have been running into a lot of problems with using the SyncUI,
especially now that we have overlays involved. Does one even need to use the
SyncUI? Can we not create our custom fields in the CMDB through the normal
process, and then open the AST forms, create the overlay if needed, and add
those fields into the view and then drop them where we want them?

Is there any other meta data that gets added to other parts of the system by
the SyncUI that the above steps would miss?

Our current environments are both Linux and Solaris, using Oracle 11 and
7.6.04 SP2 where available.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Certainly not for a while since we have to retain the advantages of

For next year we will have announcements around that topic.

David, talk to HERD (Higher Education Remedy Developers) since they will be
joining us and
providing some session content specific to higher education next year.

where did my RFE go - down a rabbit hole I think?

2011-09-29 Thread Andrew C Goodall
Matt (aka Mr. Community Ambassador),

Is there any chance you'll be reviewing, updating, and improving the
current RFE process?

I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels the current process is a
complete waste of time and energy.

I'm so tired of submitting RFEs for processes BMC support state are
"working as designed", when we know full well if the same practices /
design were implemented at other reputable software companies the
developers/engineers would soon see the exit door.

It just feels like the RFE is just a way to sideline the customer and
their concerns over the quality and features delivered. We the customer
(as admins and developers) in some cases are obliged to submit the RFE
by our management/client when an ISS is not resolved to our satisfaction
due to "working as designed" features, or lack of OOTB functionality.

More often than not you never hear back regarding a status, and when you
do - you have to start over from the beginning because the next engineer
in line does understand the RFE because they don't have all the
knowledge from the original related ISS.

Hoping BMC would give the customers more of a voice in how RFEs are
expedited, e.g. think open source model for how new features are added
or bugs are fixed.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Ken,

It is a work in progress (by the community). The document "Field ID Best
Practices" can be found here:
https://communities.bmc.com/communities/docs/DOC-16743.

This is a section of a larger effort to (finally) document best practices
and various procedures for AR development. The "Community Development Best
Practices" (CDBP) landing page can be found here:
https://communities.bmc.com/communities/docs/DOC-17062

Regarding the BOF. We had a good discussion although I don't remember too
many decisions coming out of the session. Chuck Mousseau from BMC joined us
(along with Matt L of course). Chuck gave use some insight as to how BMC
internally manages Field ID reservations and keeping the same field
consistent between forms (no need to go OT here with examples of where this
does not happen). It was great to have him involved in the conversation as
he challenged some ideas, asking what the values is as well as discussing
ideas around Dev Studio/AR enhancements that would help us follow best
practices. I left the session feeling that we are off to a good start and
have BMC's ear and support in assisting with the process.

Now we need the community's involvement. Check out the CDBP landing page
and add to a document where you have additional insight. Create a new
document for the topics listed that do not have one started already. We
have a lot of very smart and experienced people on the ARSList as well as
the BMC Communities. We have been asking for these things for some time and
now it is time for us to take ownership and make it happen.

Tried droping the quotes and semicolons at the beginning and end. Also,

Re: Using login id in field 112

2011-09-29 Thread Brittain, Mark
I am using ARS 6.3 and have multiple groups in field 112. In my case the groups
I am using are one word groups such as Group1 Group2

I don't have quotes or semi-colons in between. Just a space and it works fine.
Not sure how that might work with multi-names like Help Desk but thought I
would pass this along.

Re: Using login id in field 112

2011-09-29 Thread Brian Pancia
Yep. It is. I think we have tried just about every possible combination of
syntax. The odd thing is that it either pops up with the group error or
populates with the settings from the Dynamic Access field on the user form.
It looks like it is somehow using that field as a translation from the user
form.

** Did you check that your servers is configured to allow multiple assignee

tried using field 6090 and 112. Neither work. This might be a bug in
7.6.04. The documentation says it's support, but it looks like I might have
to go the individual group route.

I tested the following in version 7.1p7:

Set Field ID 112 to: 'user login';'user login';'user login'

Set request ID to Assigned Group permission only. Only users whose userid
appears in field id 112 can see the record.

Hi Axton,

I tried this with the 112 field when the 60xxx fields was first
introduced, but was unable to get it to work for 112... Maybe I made a
mistake, or this was added/fixed later...
